Let's get some runs!
I have just returned from Chicago.
That's right, Chicago.
Why?
Because my wife surprised me for my 30th birthday, and took me to Wrigley Field to watch the Cubbies.
Holy.
Crap.
There are many exciting details, but no time to go into them. I've got a busy day ahead. I'll try to update infor later.
In the meantime, we saw Roughy and Mrs. Roughy, as well as Bobby The Mat and Mrs. Bobby The Mat, and you can hear about our evening together at UE.

Who won the game??

Is Chicago. Is not Chicago.

Hope you had a helluva time in the windy city! If I had known you were there, I would've swung by and said hi! I was there this weekend.
Posted by: ezzvaldez | August 6, 2002 10:41 AM
Wow, Anne has to be one of the coolest people ever to be able to plan surprises like that one! I'm glad you had fun, and that you got home safely. :-)
Posted by: Robyn | August 6, 2002 10:55 AM
Did you have some toddlin' fun?
Posted by: Tabby | August 6, 2002 10:58 AM
Right on. I never would have guessed that a non-midwesterner would cheer on the Cubs. I'm assuming you saw them play against the Rockies this past weekend. Of course we had to lose 2 to 1. Payton just kicked our booty.

You truly are with a wonderful woman.
Hope you had lots of fun with Bobby and Roughy... we definitely do in the soapbox so I can just imagine in person!

Heh.
My money's on Barney.

Your wife kicks serious ass. :)
Posted by: sandra | August 6, 2002 11:25 AM
Not only did Anne surprise you with a birthday party, but also a trip to chicago. AWSOME! She's a keeper never let her go. Her first husband must have been a real Jerk-Off to let someone like her go. LUCKY UNCLE WILLY
Posted by: Terry | August 6, 2002 11:28 AM
You one lucky guy Willie!
Posted by: scaryduck | August 6, 2002 11:56 AM
I am soooooo pissed.
That frickin' Matsushita.
Oh never mind.
Your audios done gay boy.
Posted by: Dank | August 6, 2002 11:58 AM
Now that's trust. You just get on an airplane and never ask where you're going?
Wil enters the cabin of the 737: "Anne, Why are we here? Is this what you want the living room to look like?"
Anne: "Wha, why yes, Wil. That's why I brought you here. I thought we'd turn it into a real airliner and we could watch TV on little screens with headphones on and the kids can play video games strapped to their seats."
Wil: "But who's going to serve us food?"
Anne: "You silly. Start heating up your George Forman grill."
Will: "Anne, you're the greatest."
Anne: "No honey, you are. You picked me didn't you?"
Wil: "Hey! We're backing away from the gate!"
Anne: "Relax. Our new look also includes special effects. Just like Disney World."
Wil: "Oh wow. That's really cool honey."
Meanwhile in Philadelphia, the Dodgers split a four game series with the Phillies. Hell, they might have won 3 if the Dodger's pitcher could have gotten the ball over the plate in game 4.
Tune in next week when we hear Wil say, "Anne, what does it mean when the test strip turns pink?"
Audience laughs. Music. Zoom on Wil's troubled look and out. Roll credits.
Posted by: Jim | August 6, 2002 11:59 AM
Well, did you keep score on a scorecard?

WoW Wil! I just left Chi-town yesterday too! I went to visit my relatives who are scattered all over Chicago.I spent lots of time in Skokie and Evanston but I did get a chance to see the loop chinatown and the southside.I had a blast! I hope you had as much fun in Chicago as I did. It's gonna take me a week to recover!

I hope you were all good citizens and didn't publicly urinate outside the stadium after the game.

Wil,
Finally and update. I had already known you were in Chicago by reading it on unrealistic expectations. They have a picture of you at a bar posted there. Anyway, sounds like a nice topper on the birthday. A surprise party and a trip WOW!! you will have to work overtime to pull one over on Anne for her birthday. Well congratulations hope you had a blast. Till next post which I hope is soon.
Matt......

This is DISGUSTING, but when you said, "Let's get some runs!" I figured you'd let us know that you just got back from Tijuana, not Chicago. O:-D
And on that note ...
Posted by: Janis | August 6, 2002 2:09 PM
Next b-day should be Toronto!! Yes...that would an excellent choice. T-O-R-O-N-T-O! Canada! Or maybe you can come during Hockey season and take in a Leafs game?? I know your a Kings fan....and I can accept that. We all can accept that if you come to Toronto. The Beer is better up here.

/me sighs
I tried to surprise fly my wife out to Wrigley to go to a game. We got there and sat in the rain until they cancelled the game. At least since we were from out of town (Utah) they gave us most of the baseball ticket money back...

I hope you had a good time, Wil. Happy belated bithday

Uncle Willy was in Chi-town? Damn! I wish I would've known! I could've had you over for dinner! LOL! Or at the very least taken you out for a good meal and a drink!
Oh well, at least you got to see the best park in all of MLB! As a longtime Cubs fan, I truly hope you enjoyed your visit to Wrigley Field! Did you get to sing "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" during the 7th inning stretch? If not, you need to do that next time!
Let's get some runs!
Jerry

Chicago will never be the same.
Posted by: Roughy | August 6, 2002 5:04 PM
I hear you missed a great Comic Con, Wil... but this so totally makes up for it!
Posted by: Courtney | August 6, 2002 5:09 PM
I'm with Artistic Spirit on that one. :)
I always assume that all actors stop here on business from time to time. Who knows where future projects will take Young Wil.
The trip to Chicago sounds amazing. Once again, I state the obvious, that Wil is one lucky man who is so lucky and blessed to have found his wife. Growing up I thought the Cubs were cool.
Posted by: delphine | August 6, 2002 5:27 PM
Damn, Wil, you were in my hometown and I couldn't even buy you and your lovely wife a beer. Oh, well. Hope you enjoyed the trip and the Cubbies ... too bad you were here when the heat and humidity were so high. It's nice and cool now ... MUCH more comfortable.
Posted by: Mike Harris | August 6, 2002 5:32 PM
You lucky bitch.
You got to meet Robby the Mat and Roughy.
::sputter::
Again...
you lucky bitch.
Posted by: KJB | August 6, 2002 5:36 PM
GO CUBBIES!!
I wish I had time to see a game at Wrigley Field this season. :-(
Posted by: Kimberly3 | August 6, 2002 8:02 PM
Jess, we were pining away without you! And the Beach Boys... now I'm jealous!
Of course, I spent my weekend taking in some Fine Irish Music at the Dublin (Ohio) Irish Festival. Now THAT was a lot of fun! (:
So many people in Chicago... I've been there many times... technically... OK, I've been to O'Hare many times, but that's about as far into "Chi-town" that I've ever made it. Why doesn't anyone visit good old B-town? We've got basketball, the Bob Knight Avengers, and more places to eat out than most people can visit in a year.
Posted by: kendoka | August 6, 2002 8:47 PM
mmmmmm...... chicago.... one of my favorite cities in the world..... sounded like you had fun dude!
Posted by: E | August 6, 2002 8:55 PM
Sounds like a good time was has by all. Welcome back.
Posted by: Dee | August 6, 2002 9:08 PM
Will,
You did not have to get a surprise in order to act your age. I am glad you had a kool time.
I dare you to try the windy city in January. I know I won't. Your wife is just sliiiiick.
F.G.

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAH!! From a long-time Cubbie, congrats Wil! If Anne weren't already married, I would propose to her based solely on the bestest gift ever. Wrigley is by far the best place to see a game, and even with baseball in the crapper and the Cubs sucking, a trip to Wrigley is still pure baseball heaven. Did you also visit the lovely Shermer, Illinois? ;-)
Posted by: Aestro | August 6, 2002 10:12 PM
Somehow I thought you'd be younger Wil. :) Happy birthday, and hope you had tons of fun in Chicago.

I read some of the related links you gave. So you own a Maine Coon cat too? They are such cool cats. We have one, name of Merlin, big fluffy black and white guy. We call him Puff because of A Prairie Home Companion and his fluffy tail, though he also answers to Merlin.
Merlin is 15 pounds of solid bone and muscle. Tres elegant, extremely affectionate to the point of obnoxiousness, very playful, and a tinch neurotic. High-pitched meow that just does NOT go with his size. Plus, he is totally cowed by our little five-pound Japanese Bobtail, Keishi, though that is understandable because she was the matriarch cat when we adopted Merlin, so he grew up thinking she was his Mom. So even though she is getting old and slowing down a bit, he still backs off when she gives him the evil eye and the lifted paw. (And she can give one mean evil eye.)
Please consider telling your loyal readers about your Maine Coon cat(s)? If you don't think it's too, you know, personal. Thanks!

Hey, you shoulda mentioned you'd be in Chi-town. I'm not that far away!! Oh well, I'm glad you had a blast. Happy belated Birthday!!

So Wil, what's your opinion of The Friendly Confines? To me, it's the finest place to see a game bar none (allowing that I haven't been to new parks in Pittsburgh and San Fran yet, and they look awesome). Last time I was there I had to be content with standing room tickets, and that was still great. I haven' tdone one in a while, but some frineds and I have gone ballpark-hopping from time to time, and Wrigley has yet to be outdone. (For ballpark opinions, see http://www.starshiptim.com/ballparks/ballparks.html
So, as someone asked earlier, did you keep score?
Posted by: Tim | August 7, 2002 12:13 AM
Your wife sounds really cool...
Posted by: elise | August 7, 2002 12:20 AM
Yeah, I kept score until my 50 cent pen ran out while i was recording a strike in the top of the 8th.
I'll scan it when I get a scanner, and you can see. :)

OMG, CHICAGO ROCKS! ;D you should move here. best city in the world. =x

Is uncle Willie slacking on us?
He buggers off for a week, comes back, and this is all we get? Throw me a friggin bone here!
Just kiddin...
Well, kinda.
I guess it's just us freaks who got nothing better to do than just sit here and read about someone elses exciting life, while ours just sucks!
Posted by: S'Becks | August 7, 2002 5:35 AM
So, Unca Willie, we must have crossed paths at O'Hare -- I was just stopping through there changing planes on the way back from a business trip. Good on you for seein' the Cubs play. My co-author maintains there is no finer team and he roots for them come hell or high water. Me, I used to root for the Rockies when I lived in Denver, but lately haven't followed baseball... (no, don't hit me... )
Anyway, three cheers to Anne for taking you to see them. Bestest birthday present ever, eh?
Posted by: thespacewriter | August 7, 2002 7:03 AM
I'm glad you had a great time in my home town, I'm headed over to Jacobs Field in Cleveland from Chicago for a game.
Drop me line if you have the time, I live six blocks from Wrigley and enjoy the friendly confines frequently (still an Indians fan).
Good luck in the upcoming Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day.

your wife rocks hardcore.

From the title of the entry, for a minute I thought maybe you had gone to Tijuana o.O
Posted by: S | August 7, 2002 9:24 AM
I went to college at Illinois Wesleyan University, in Bloomington, IL, and I was in Phi Mu Alpha (a professional music fraternity). Two years back, we got the opportunity to sing the National Anthem at a Cubs game at Wrigley. One of the best nights in my life. My parents even came to see me! To see it, go to http://www.alphalambda.org/index1.html
Posted by: Mike | August 7, 2002 10:16 AM
(Nuri) Not fair, we were in Chicago at the same time and we didn't see you? Not fair at all.
(Flip) Yeah, I bet that's just what you and your family most desire, two screaming fangirls following you around trying to get a picture... no wait, one screaming fangirl, I don't scream but I WANNA PICTURE WITH WIL WHEATON!!!! *falls over sobbing*
Posted by: Nuri and Flip | August 7, 2002 10:20 AM
kendoka- what do you mean, I visited Bloomington this past weekend. My friend had her "Bye, Bye, B-Town" party this past Fri. We had DJ Spikes, and the party had a breakdance theme. It was a freakin' blast. Do you ever go to Rockit's? I usually eat there or grab some panera bread when I'm there. Anyway I probably shouldn't post this here. GO CUBS!...and all that other stuff.
Posted by: shinefly | August 7, 2002 9:59 PM
Oh, my goodness! I cannot believe you were here in Chicago and I did not know about it! I go to Cubs' games all the time. I would have begged my mom to get tickets for the chance of seeing you there!
Posted by: Diana | August 8, 2002 10:32 AM
I love Bloomington, Chicago, and the Cubs. My dad used to have season tickets and he'd take me every home game. When I was three or four, he bought me a t-shirt which said "Chicago Cubs. . . .Well, Maybe Next Year," and would put it on me every opening day. His idea of a joke. I still watch the Cubs whenever I get a chance :)

Ryker doesn't even have a beard, he looks better with a beard!, Anyway, hope you had a blast at the game. (I guess I don't get into baseball to much cause I lived in IL, for such a long time and it got boring,) CALM DOWN PEOPLE, I didn't say it was a bad thing, I just said I'm not into it. But it's all good!

Just wondering, I'm too sleepy to read threw all of these post to see if you stated that or not. Not wondering for myself, but for the Hun. He likes the game and was wondering.
