Hey
Hey, I've got a commentary without much to say...
It's finally autumn here in Pasadena. After weeks of relentlessly hot, stifling weather, it's has been cool and raining on and off since Saturday.
When I was a kid, I was a total California Sun Worshipper. I lived for the summer, took it as a personal affront when we went to the beach and it was foggy. I would intentionally scorch the soles of my feet, toughening them up so I could walk slowly, cooly, across the blistering sand at Zuma beach, impressing (in my own mind, at least) all those bikini-clad hotties who I was too geeky to talk to.
These days, however, I absolutely love Autumn and Winter. I love the flannel sheets, evenings building and enjoying fires in the fireplace and on my neighbor's lawn, the way the smell of fireplaces hangs in the air all day long, running through piles of leaves while gardeners chase us with rakes.
I love stepping out of the shower into an obscuring mist, and writing "A&W" on the bathroom mirror. I love hot apple cider while we watch The Simpsons together on the couch, wrapped in a woolen blanket.
I love walking out into a clear but crisp day, shivering in the shade but basking in the few spots of warmth the sun delivers through the trees on my street.
Though I feel sad for Demeter when she has to return Persephone to Hades, I am grateful each year for pomegranates in the Underworld.
Comments
I love Autumn, too. I once dated a girl named Autumn... years ago, in High School. The irony was great...
But, SO hard to get up on a cold morning when the sheets are warm.

You like autumn and winter?
You should come up here to British Columbia and live here for the season. We only wish we could see your weather.
You'll be dying to go back.
(It's not that I don't like it up here. This is the most beautiful place in the world.)

Autumn is my favorite season, so I can relate. :) Cool enough to wear a sweater, but no so cold to need a coat. If you ever get the chance, come out here to New England when the foliage changes- there's nothing like taking a walk through "nature's fireworks" (to quote Bill Watterson of Calvinh & Hobbes fame)- especially when it's followed by hot apple cider and maybe a fresh homemade cinnamon doughnut.
Posted by: Toonces | October 1, 2002 04:12 PM
Autumn is absolutely my favorite season. Crisp, clean, and cool. Winter I can stand as long is doesn't get too cold (like 10 below zero), but it usually does here in Indiana.

Wil,
Damn ... that is all a bit poetic for me !! And apart from anything else is a load of hogwash, all the seasons are great in their own way, and mostly determines natures own recycling programme. Hey - now THAT sounds really geeky. I've obviously been visiting WWDN too much ;-) Or maybe I just don't see the romance in everyday things any more. Hmmmm.... whatever.

Whooa!! I think you posted that as I was reading September's entries. It has been almost a month since I've been on your site, but I always try to catch up with what's been going on.
I always idolised you from the age of 11 when I first saw the film 'Stand by Me' and I would be lying if I said I wasn't in love with you, and of course like many women heartbroken when you got married, but now I see you in such a different light, a man who has learnt so much, helped so many, growned so well, and loves his family so much.
I hope one day I too will be lucky enough to find love like yours and Anne's.
You are an inspiration Wil, to all of us here.
I cannot wait to read your book.

Can I get an AMEN!?
I swear, I would have thought I wrote that. Makes me miss having a signifiant other to snuggle with under that warm blanket watching sitcoms or a funny movie. Sitting there surrounded by popcorn, some sodi pops, a little chocolate, lights low and it a little rainy outside. AHHH thats pefection.
Even by yourself its great, call in sick one day when its a little rainy and treat yourself to that. Its a beautiful thing.

I'm with you, Wil.
It's been scorching here all summer, too. Autumn, finally came to Southern Oregon in full effect this past weekend, and yesterday it actually rained. Not just showers, rain. There was an intense double rainbow that tripled and quadrupled in places.
Here, winter is a relief from the 95 degree days and 15% humidity. The smoke gets washed from the air and it's easy to breath again.
Unfortunately, it fades into an ungraceful winter, as if November never ends and suddenly it's April. It's better than the heat.

Wow not only is he a geeky activist who is hip on pop culture, but he likes mythology too! Wil can you come up here to Canada and teach the lads how to behave? : )
Not to sound like a suck up, but that was a lovely entry. Even though I'm a summer girl it reminded me that parts of autumn are enjoyable too. Thanks.
Posted by: Gaea | October 1, 2002 04:36 PM
Autumn is the best. It's an actual season, unlike Spring. I think one year, spring was only a damp week between the dry winter cold and the humid summer heat.
"A&W". For a flash, I thought it was the root beer, but then I realized what it really meant. That's sweet.
While you're running through those piles of leaves, are gardeners really chasing you with rakes? Who's running with you, can we join in?
Autumn is a wonderful time when the rays of the sun are longer, making the golden fire of the sunsets even more magnificient.
Apple cider and spice cookie weather, indeed!

Fall is nice and you can't beat watching The Simpsons while sipping hot apple cider.
The only negative part when the weather gets cooler people start passing around colds & the flu season slowly starts. Yuck.
Lets not forget days of endless gray with the sun nowhere in sight. Depressing, depressing.

Mmmm...pomegranates...autumn is so beautiful in Virginia...but I remember autumn in Santa Barbara--the most beautiful sunsets I've ever seen came in mid-October over the Pacific...mmmm.

flannel and woolen blankets and fireplaces and apple cider?
umm... don't you live in... what was it... right, california. yeah. that's what i thought.

Wil,
Ahh yes Autumn or "The Fall" whatever you wish to call it, is my favorite time of the year. I remember building huge bonfires and rosting hotdogs on a hand carved stick then making smores. Basically eating till you were so full you could pop. I to cant wait to light up my fireplace and snuggle with my lady under our blanket as we watch movies and snack on popcorn. Why just this evening I spent 2 hrs outside reading William Shatners new book "I'm Working On That" it was so calm and serine. Well glad to see you enjoy the season as much as I do. There is no denying it, life is fun. Oh and it is 12 days till my birthday, just thought I would sound like Anne for a second.
Best wishes to you and your family......
Until your next post......

Wil,
I always loved mythology, still do. My fave part of the whole Hades - Persephone thing is when Hades spots her for the first time, hops off the big, black chariot, and peeps at her from the shubbery.
Nypmh 1: Hey, do you see someone over there, peeping at us from the shrubbery?
Nymph 2: Yeah, I think he's kinda familiar.
Nymph 1: Oh wait. I'd know that big, black beard and smoldering eyes anywhere. That's Hades, Lord of the Dead, King of the Underworld. He's peeping at Persephone.
Nymph 2: Say, don't his eyes look a little more smoldery than usual?
Persephone: Aaaah, he's taking me away to the depths of the underworld!!!
Later.

Growing up in Minnesota I always hated Autumn because it meant that the 8 month winter was right around the corner. Now that I have lived the last 5 years of my life in the middle of the desert, I find that I miss the change of seasons. I am tired of the sun and the heat. Luckily I will be heading back home for a few days this month. Hopefully I will get a chance to take a walk along the Mississippi and see all of the beautiful fall colors.
Man, now I am really home sick. Thanks a lot :)

I completely agree with Toonces - you haven't experienced Autumn until you see it in New England. It's truly a sight to behold - all those marvelous colours as far as the eye can see. In fact, althought its just a tad early, this weekend I am going hiking with a couple friends from NYC in the Catskills (which I selfishly think of as *my* mountains ) The prospect of that is making all the overtime I'm working seem like nothing. (of course, the fact that I am going to see Alton Brown the next day makes it even better)

Interesting comments on California Living. I've been equally struck by the unusual seasonal reality that is ever-present in California (I was born and raised in the bay area). Still, I've always found California winters gloomy, overcast weather, cool, unpleasant winds sneaking through the bay, and no sun. Instead I find spring time in California exquisite, the whole state seems to bloom, or come alive be it on a floral, or fauna basis every March. That being said, I think I'd prefer California winters to winters in Buffalo or anywhere else in the North East.

Fall is the breathing space between summer and winter -- and here in Michigan is glorious. Winter will lock us in, beat us down and occaisionally astound us with its beauty, but fall is to be treasured -- the beauty lasts and grows more spectacular from day to day.
I grew up in Northern CA, went to college in San Diego and nothing compares to the autumn here in Michigan (except, perhaps, for a New England / Canadian fall).
I scheduled my wedding this weekend, just so my poor, deprived relatives in CA could make the trip out and see what they are missing.
It's an open bar with lots of dancin' -- any monkees want to come polka?

Posted by: Dupper | October 1, 2002 07:19 PM
Every autumn, I feel reborn.
That wonderful feeling sometimes happens in the middle of winter for me, and sometimes in spring... and almost never in summer. Makes me wonder why I'm living in LA!
And yes, folks, especially in the foothills and mountains, LA gets cold at night. Most buildings aren't insulated as well as they would be in colder climates, and after so much heat in summer, just getting temperatures cold enough to have a tiny bit of frost a few mornings of the winter feels very chilly! My apartment has gotten snow or slushy hail about once a year since I moved there a few years ago.
Thanks for the awesome entry, Wil.

Sounds like you need to vacation in Upstate New York during the peak foliage season.
I'm so serious.
It's one of the reasons I'd have a hard time moving to California and trying my luck.
I'd miss the autumn.

The first snowfall, decorating the Christmas tree with someone you care about, turtlenecks and hot cocoa around the fireplace, the new year, snow angels on Valentine's Day.

hi diddly-o, neighbor! Isn't the break in the weather great? I actually broke out my L.A. Kings sweatshirt and wore it to work today. Autumn/Winter just can't get here fast enough. I loved it a few years ago when it got cold enough during a Christmas storm to keep the snow on the San Gabriels for a couple of weeks. It made for a kickass sight from my kitchen window.

I aore fall and winter! I'm jealous. We don't get a real fall here in Texas until around November - at least, that's when the leaves finally decided to fall, whether it's cool or not. I think they just give up on the cool weather and figure if they wait around it's never going to happen. I don't know. Anyway, I'll just have to live vicariously through you! :D
Posted by: Dimple | October 1, 2002 08:05 PM
Wil; you know no cold.
It will be 21 degrees here when I get up in the morning.
You really need to come up to Montana and get a dose of a real Fall and Winter.
Can you handle it? HA HA
Posted by: Keith in Montana | October 1, 2002 08:09 PM
Wil,
Hey is a great word. Anyway, fall is upon us and, for once, I did not even notice it. It feels like summer and fall are in their traditional fight and summer has won. Winter will be upon us soon enough and no matter how many times the seasons change I am always surprised. Happy fall and don't loose your blankets.
F.G.

Wil, you only love the fall because you live in Southern California. I lived in Seattle for two falls, and boy! It was cold! I really appreciated San Diego weather when I moved back here. I still do! The main reason I like fall is that when I'm at work or school, I'm not thinking "Damn, I could be outside right now!"

Best thing about Autumn: Halloween. I think I'm going to be Spaceman Spiff this year. You know, from Calvin & Hobbes. Don't know what to do about the pink hair, though. Somehow I just can't see Calvin with pink hair.

All I miss from home (midwest) are seasons and stars...*sigh*
LOL at A&W...my DH and I go to a shack of an A&W for ice cream float "dates" now and then, its sweet. Love the burnt red and ochre plastic booths!

I love the crunching crispy sound that leaves make under my feet. The cool breeze that russles the trees making their leaves fall like golden angel wing feathers. Everything around seems to take a deep calming sigh. Yes Autumn is one of my favourite times on year.

I just rode through the biggest typhoon to hit Tokyo in the past 50 years... and this morning there`s not a cloud in the sky.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, Californians don't know what real weather is.... If I had a dime for every time I'd heard that from some smug resident of a place where they get snow up to their eyeballs every winter, I could retire to La Jolla for 112 years.
Wil, I thought it was a wonderful post--there really is weather here, as we natives know (and it's all relative and based on what you're acclimated to). (Lousy sentence structure, I know, but oh, well...) My only complaint about autumn is having to drag myself to work when the bed's finally reached that perfect stage of toasty snugness!
And loved the mythological reference--one of my favorites from way back.
Throw a pinecone in the fireplace for me...

It was surreal, I was talking to a girl(friend? -dunno yet) about the beauty of Autumn and winter here in Dublin, the light pollution casting a dark pink haze over the terracotta Georgian parapets at night, having roast chestnuts and malt wine on Dawson street, staying under the building overhangs out of the soft rain....
I love this time of year.

An interesting random thing:
Being from Blighty, 'Autumn' is what I call this particular season. But I always think 'Fall' is so much more poetic, being short for the olde Englishe 'Fall of the Leaf'.

I am greatly amused because just yesterday I was at the grocery store debating whether or not to buy a pomegranite. They are one of my favorite fruits, but are such a pain to eat.
And next week, my son's preschool will do their annual fieldtrip to visit a local cider mill to see the lovely apple orchards as the leaves are turning, and donuts and drink cider.
Now, if only I had a fireplace!

*smile*
This made me think of the Butabi Brothers from Night At The Roxbury and the SNL sketch it was based on, and also of a recurring sketch on a Canadian radio and TV show from the 80s called Four On the Floor that featured a comedy troupe called The Frantics. It aired on the CBC, as most Canadian sketch comedy did prior to the birth of The Comedy Network. I've long believed that the Butabi brothers were based on Stuey and Hymey from FOTF.
(see www.frantics.net/tv.php)
I enjoyed the reference to mythology. Very cool, Wil.

Nice article Wil. I love fall too. It never really gets too cold here in Texas, but it may this year due to the mild summer we just had. Rarely over 100! I'm stunned. But I digress.
On the couch watching The Simpsons under a blanket? Sounds nice. I may be able to indulge in a bit of that myself soon. If all continues to go well with the gal I'm dating. Keep your fingers crossed. ;)

Real, man, real.
Born and raised inside the DC Capital beltway, I am moving North once I'm out of school, away from 95 degree summer days and humidity so thick you can swim in it. Give me my sweaters, jeans and my cowboy boots. Give me the soft rustle of the drying leaves in the first dry breeze of the season - afternoons outdoors after the light starts to change from the orange of summer to the brilliant luminescent white of winter - creaky wooden fences and the scent of rolled hay after a harvest.... Oh forget moving North, I just want it to be Fall all year round. =D

One should not underestimate the people in California when it comes to weather. I lived in the Bay Area for two years and every evening, when the temp dropped into the 60's, these folks would be getting out the wool coats and turing the electric blanket on high. California thins the blood, as my friend Bill says. He grew up on the farms of Monatana and Colorado. He knows cold. Now that he lives in LA, he admits that he no longer can tolerate even the low 60's.
Like everyone else here, autumn is great. Cool evenings and mornings, followed by warm -but not humid -days. Chicago sucks in the winter and spring -I don't remember the last time we had a proper spring. And while this town is great during the summer, when the humidity takes hold like a pit bull protecting its drug lord master, I hate this place. I loved the Bay Area just for the fact it had an even tempature zone.

Why do you write the name of a root beer on your mirror??
Posted by: rich | October 2, 2002 08:50 AM
For a sun worshiper from SoCal, you've certainly come to understand the joys of autumn quite well. It's better in the North, though - those palm trees throw off the whole autumnal ambiance.

Michigans autumns are reallllyyy weird. The trees are all starting to change...but its like 85 degrees out... but it feels like it should be cold. It keeps switching; somedays it's hot, sometimes it's freezing...then it get's hot again. Snow doesn't usually fall unil the middle or end of November, but then it sometimes snows on Halloween...then melts...then snows again in Nov. Mother Nature likes to Feck with us here. ;P
What I really like is the wind in the fall time because its just the right tempurature. yayyy i got mail.

If you had Autumn/Winter all year 'round i think that would make you think differently :-)

But I only ate six seeds!
I just took part in the planning of a ritual theater presentation of the Persephone myth recently. Great metaphors in the whole story, but it can be rather graphic depending on the interpretation.

Wil,
Intentionally scorching the soles of your feet? Writing "A&W" on your bathroom mirror?
Sounds like you've been drinking a bit too much of the ole' "cider", if you know what I mean.

heh, welcome to my world.
weeping for demeter? you're still a geek, wheaton. =)

Reading that post was simply breath-taking, god Wil, you're too good!
I love thinking about the upcoming seasons. When it's summer i daydream about the glory of the Fall. And when i'm freezing my nuts off, I love to think about summer and everything it brings.
Damn, that was the most vivid post you've ever done. Its was sooo enjoyable. It was just like eating a hot baked apple pie. You can't get enough and every bite is better than the one before.
Now all i'm wishing for is a beautiful blonde in fannel, so I can cuddle next to her when the weather is nippy. Ha! ha!
But I live in Florida, so there is no autumn. The palm trees don't change color and on x-mas eve its 89 degrees. While on New years, it might get as cold as 60 (if you're lucky).
But thanks Wil for sharing this post. I would pay a $100 to read it again. But luckily I don't.
Thanks

The whole entry was wonderful, but that last paragraph was just amazing. Thanks!

Hey, Persephone and Hades probably snuggle up with hot apple cider and sherry, too. So does Demeter. She's not the first parent to send her kid off for the school year. :-)
I know what you mean, too. I'm from Phila originally, and I always get terribly homesick this time of year. September and October are the most WONDERFUL months back there, probably in good part because we have a year to go before enduring August again. :-) I miss the apples and cranberries and the most gorgeous fall weather on Earth a lot this time of year ... but even the few changes we get out in soCal are pretty nice.

Autumn on the East coast is nearly the same, though we're stuck with nearly 90 degree weather still.
On a side note, I was amazed to see that I was not the only person who knew of the myth of the return of winter... Amazingly still, I was jsut thinking of this the other day.
Promegranate seeds anyone?

I live on Texas and well it is hot and muggy here...I would love to see some MORE fall and WINTER sooner...but it prob wont get that good til January....ANYWAYS..Wil you must be real busy lately..you havent written much....Whats been up?
Posted by: Candace | October 2, 2002 10:44 AM
Nice post Wil. Autumn is pretty sweet, at least the 2 weeks or so of it we get in Wisconsin. ;)
For those of you wondering why Wil would write A&W on his mirror... Well, his wife's name is Anne and his name (this should come as no real suprise) is Wil. So A&W = Anne & Wil. Get it? Got it? Good. 8-)

KENDOKA!! Are you still around reading these waaaaaaaay down here?
One of my grandmothers in Arizona had a pomegranate tree in her back yard so I have been eating them from way back. Our usual method was to peel the leathery skin off the outside and then carefully break apart the ruby seeds and then you pop them in your mouth, either one by one or a bunch at a time. You suck the juice off the seeds and spit the pits out. I have heard that you can swallow the pits but I never tried it, and they are kinda bitter and grainy if you chew them. I usually just suck off the juice and spit the pits out.
I'm craving one bad now! They always remind my of my Grandma, and the summers at her house in her beautiful backyard. I wish I could have moved into that house, but living in Texas and the house being in Arizona, not happening.

I read this so late that now I'm just parroting everything everyone else said!
Fall has always been my favorite season. It finally cools off and the humidity goes down. (VERY humid summers in the Midwest, 90% is normal) The leaves are just starting to change here (central Wisconsin), the Sumac always goes first turning a deep, bright red. Then everyone else starts, and the red is joined by orange, yellow, more red, and some brown. There's always a few straglers so you still have the greens. It's crisp, and cool, and I can wear sweatshirts without roasting!
Posted by: Sunidesus | October 2, 2002 12:20 PM
if its clear and yella' you've got juice there fella', if its thick and brown you're in cider town! now there are to two exceptions to this...

That is all.

The falls here seem pretty - sometimes sunny, crisp, green even.
And then you step outside, and your various appendages chill and turn into veggies from your fridge's crisper.
The years I spent in La Jolla, near San Diego, were amusing in that everyone who visited expected lots and lots of sun.
Thing is, even in the summertime it can be overcast - when you're right next to the ocean, you're often stuck being the clouded Jewel of the Sea.
We now return you to your regularly scheduled program, assuming it's kinda like G4 and will be airing in bits on UPN.

Speaking of Fall, we in St. George Utah have had a serious drought for the past year. This morning we had more rain in 15 minutes than we have for the last 6 months. Karma working I had to find a sweatshirt and it kept me from being halfway to work on the mt. bike in the middle of it.

Demeter's going to be okay. She was getting way too overbearing and having a lot of boundary issues. This is a good time for her to rethink her priorities.
But Persephone - she gets to have it all: light and dark, innocent girl and underworld queen, spring flowers, summer lushness, and the deepest secrets of the labyrinth...Persephone rocks.
And to think that when I first got out from under mom's thumb I just ended up working in a diner for the summer.

ironically, the fogged-in areas of coastal california get more sun during the fall than during the summer; the fog recedes and the sun pokes its head out, and there's a beautiful indian summer with crisp clear windy and sunny days, and cold clear nights. :)
Posted by: aphrael | October 2, 2002 05:19 PM
Yes, I too love the cooler months. Having grown up in California's Central Valley, I've grown to HATE the summer months. I especially love the months that the local ski resorts are open.
Oh, and Wil, if you're reading this... Thanks for mentioning Movable Type. I'm lovin' it. Works BEAUTIFULLY! I finally finished modifying my templates to take on the looks of the rest of my site.

Although I have to admit the cooler climate is nice when the bed is soo warm as long as I don't hae to getup- I don't mind the winter- I but I lack natural insulation( not that I am as thin as a rail)I just have a hard time keeping warm. This is the time of the year when i love my Down Comforter and heated water bed---- yeah baby!!!!

Well, here in Quebec,Canada the summers are VERY humid and uncomfortable. Makes me feel like an overheated engine. Thank God for air conditionners. I try to stay indoors as much as possible. Autumn and winter are a big relief. I welcome the cold weather and I feel alive again. At least once every winter, I put on my bathing suit and I take a dip in the fresh snow in my backyard. WHAT A THRILL! (of course, I do it at night so my neighbours won't call the police[laughs]). Some people think I'm crazy but it's the way I am. I wish we had winter all year round.
The one thing I NEVER understood is people who say that they love the heat, but they're always trying to cool down. Either in a swimming pool on in air conditionned homes. If they love the heat so much, why not just endure it???

Shoot, fall around here means ginning season. Which means my allergies take over my life, lol.
A beautiful entry, nonetheless.
Nice touch with the mythology references!

You gotta love those crisp autumn days going out playing a pick up game of football or hikeing in the woods taking pictures of nature or sitting on the beach watching the waves come in.

Hey, been a while since i could post, but now that i've got a new job/place to live, maybe i can catch up. I must say that i seem to feel the way will does about autumn at the start of each season. Looking forward to whatever it is i like about the upcoming season, and being glad that it's another 8 months until i have to put up with what i didn't like about the last season. (Canada has only 3 seasons - pre-hockey, hockey and post-hockey ;) - but anyways, i gotta agree that i'm looking forward to autumn for some similar reasons as wil: getting all cozy under the covers on a cold evening with someone special and just relaxing watching a movie or whatnot. That and forgetting about the fling with the summer-girl (and hoping that i won't be thinking the same when winter comes about the autumn-girl). Your post was really cool, it's good to see another side to you Wil, but i think it's a side that guys only have to show once in a while. Looking forward to another update soon.

Yeah, I love Autumn too, just comfortable, not hot and prickly like summer or aching and cold like winter. Just ... comfortable. I guess I've never actually seen snow so I wouldn't know about your Winters but I don't like Summer too much. It's just annoyingwhen you get all sweaty while you're just sitting around doing nothing because it's too hot to move. Autumn is a huge relief for all of us I think.

Mmm... I love A&W root beer.
Not enough to write about it on my shower door, but to each his own.

So I'm flipping around the television last night when I hear a familiar voice. I check the channel, it's not 168 (which airs TNG nightly), it's 177..nickelodeon. Family Double Dare. Wil bouncing around and the host ripping on you him every chance he got. That was amusing to watch. Quite the energy back then.
I prefer winter to summer, summer gets too hot. My favorite of all though is autumn in New England. It's unparallelled by anthing anywhere else. But then again my opinion could be jaded from being stuck 4 years in the south so far.

Um, yes. Oingo Boingo rocks. Winter sucks. Autumn, however, is acceptable.
Haunted Mansion Holiday opens in Disneyland tomorrow, with a brand new score written by Danny Elfman. It runs through the first week of January.
And, coincidentally, there are several geocaches in the Disneyland Resort.
So, Wil, you slayed them at the Con. What are you going to do now?

I love autumn too! I love the smell of leaves on a cool day coming home from school, and i love the way the leaves change, especially here in PA where the Nicholson Bridge is. I love pumpkins and apple cider and corn mazes. Speaking of food we just had pomegranates in class today. well, Have a nice Day? :P
