Auditions 3: The Search for Spock
Here's a quick update on I, Robot:
They put about 100 actors on tape last week. 20 of those tapes were sent to the director, including mine. He will pick a few he likes, and have meetings with them this week or next.
Wish I had more info, but that's it. Strangely, I'm not sitting here, stomach in knots, agonizing over whether I'll get it or not. While I would love to work with Alex Proyas (I am a HUGE Dark City weenie) and play a robot, I don't have the life-or-death feeling that used to accompany auditions.
And as far as I know, they didn't see anyone from Jimmy Kimmel's family.

Woo first post, maybe.
Good luck, Wil! :D

OOooh second post!
Go Wil!
:D
If you can act with a robot (okay, android) for about five years, you can certainly play one for 8 months!
Best of luck!

Good news.
What's up with Jimmy Kimmel? Is this an LA-only item?
Posted by: Drakensykh | January 22, 2003 10:44 AM
Well, I've never said this about a man before, but I caught that interview of you on BBC, and your voice is HOT! You'll make a good robot, I believe.....I could see it. Finger's crossed and much creative mojo I send your way, dude.

Wil: If you get to meet Proyas, ask him if SCIFI is ever going to air the "Riverworld" film/pilot he made for them. It was based on the novel by Philip Jose Farmer, and looked like it had some promise. Proyas or SCIFI or Alliance Atlantis said at one point it would air in January of this year. Mojo, by the way.

Keep us posted. And eventough you don't seem to be nervous about the outcome, I'm sure we'd all love to see you in the role.

Good Luck Wil got a bucket of Mojo to dump on ya. It would be awesome to see you in that movie. I'm anxiously awaiting it myself. Dark City was the first DVD I ever bought. =:o)
Posted by: Mr Fibby | January 22, 2003 10:49 AM
It's cool that you're so laid back about the outcome. Even so, I'm sending mojo your way.
No, not Mojo Jojo. That poop-flinger had better watch his fuzzy ass or I'll get out the shaving cream, tomato sauce, and rubber du ... umm I've said too much, haven't I?
Seriously though, you are quickly rising to become one of my favorite personalities. I was one of the few who never had a problem with Wesley (except for my unfortunate habit of confusing him with Westley in the Princess Bride). Every time I've seen you in a movie, you have put forth a damn fine performance. You have shown yourself to be intelligent and humorous in this blog.
I'd wish you the best but I suspect that you will succeed in attaining it without my help.
Posted by: Owen | January 22, 2003 10:50 AM
As some wag noted once, life's what happens when you're making other plans.
I found that all the good things in my life started happening once I stopped worrying about them.
You've got some cool things going on in other parts of your life and are lucky enough to have gained an invaluable resource - perspective.
Having said all that, good luck in getting the part. It's cool to see you workin' it!

I just saw Nemesis about fell out of my seat when I saw you in the wedding seen. I thought you were totally cut out and was prepared to be very bitter through the entire movie. I was praying all through the movie that it would end in a naked wedding, no such luck.
Congrats on the audition. You have awesome character, on and off screen, it's only a matter of time before you find the right showcase for the onscreen kind. Clearly you've got the off-screen part nailed.

Good job on the first cut Wil, and i know you've gotten a lot of people saying the same thing (i read through to where I posted), so I won't type it all out, but my feelings are the same as theirs on the whole priorities/perspective thing. I thought about paraphrasing 'Field of Dreams', but saying this is enough ;)
Oh, on an un-related note, you should check out that book I emailed you about. It's definately worth the time it'll take you to read the 330 or so pages.

an excellent director...( i mean, c'mon..lets face it...this guy rocks)
a FANTASTIC story...( I mean, c'mon...we're talking classic here)
and that fact that you have a huge frickin posse all dieing to see you on the silver screen again..( i mean, c'mon...we were jilted with Nemesis, we demand satisfaction!)
wow..
as i was writing this..i thought the c'mon thing would look a lot funnier....
but all it looks like now is that i've taken a lame joke and beaten it like a red-headed step child...

I just saw Nemesis as well and was happy at seeing Wil for all of 7.21 seconds.
However, the rest of the film just needed help in a big way. Not a single character (save for 'Admiral' Janeway and Dr. Crusher) acted in a way consistent with 7 TV years and 3 films.
Suspiciously absent altogether: any mention whatsoever about Lwaxana Troi or the fact that Betazed was taken in the Dominion War (see Deep Space 9), Kyle Riker, Worf's feelings for Troi as shown in many ways in the final episode of the TV series.
Yes, I be geeking.

If you are 1 out of 20, thats a good thing. But like people have said "don't stress it". As long as you can support your family that is all that matters. Not to mention you have a loving wife, 2 wonderful step children and a great family supporting you since that very first commercial. And you should thank GOD that no one from the Jimmy Kimmel family has ever been in or ever made a movie.
PS I will continue the good MOJO for you

I've not seen Dark City, but when I looked to see what else Proyas had directed...wow, The Crow? I adore that movie, it's a masterpiece. I really hope the director thinks you're right for the part, or any part in the film. It seems as if it would be a lot of fun and just yeah, really cool.

My significant other digs "Dark City". I found it a tad...well..."dark and arty". I like a generous helping of science in my science fiction and the environment shape shifting was too unexplained for my literal, american t.v. watching, explain-it-to me, mind.
Dark City - reminded me of how a schizophrenic might see the world and that hurt my head.
My significant other loved the open-endedness of the story and the ending. Me - felt empty - needed closure(s). I guess that's why I liked Matrix better - I could understand the technology behind the story/concept.
Plenty of MOJO coming your way from the Great White North (just south of Canada). I think I can understand a ROBOT - well, maybe not a shape shifting mind control ROBOT who can bend time/space and infinity.
Here is your...MOJO - good luck

SPOILER ALERT !
SCENE FROM "I, ROBOT" SCRIPT:
Robot: Wil Wheaton
Inspector: William (Fu%#@*g) Shatner
A dimly lit room. A robot stands in shadows against a wall. Suddenly a door opens and light from a sanitary hallway floods the room illuminating the robot. The room contains one chair and no other furnishings.
The inspector takes a moment to look over the room then saunters in. The inspector adjusts his hairpiece where he thinks the robot will not see him while at the same time snugging up his girdle to help suck in his prodigious girth. Then the inspector moves over to face the robot.
Inspector: Are you R. 709?
Robot: That is correct.
Inspector: Did... You... know the late... Mr. Spinkter?
Robot: I was his personal assistant, sir. May I ask who you are?
Inspector: No. I'll do the talking here. All... You... Robots... are alike.
Robot: That's not correct, sir. Most models--
Inspector: Be quiet! I... need... to know what you were doing the night of October third. And... you used a contraction?
Robot: You got a problem with that?
Inspector: No, nevermind. And... Stop... Evading... The question.
Robot: I was not evading your question. To answer it, I was hot waxing Mr. Spinkter's friend.
Inspector: You were what? Nevermind. What... Was... Her name?
Robot: Her name was, Rightler.
The Inspector's face changes as though he suddenly realizes something.
Inspector: What did this Rightler look like?
-break-
The scene continues with a fist fight, loss of hairpiece, swearing and the inspector trying to use logic to talk the Robot into shutting down to no avail.
END OF SPOILER!
Best of luck, Wil.
Of, course the above scene may change before the actual movie comes out.

I'll have to go back and read 'em one of these days... as soon as I've finished the Deathstalker series by Simon R. Green. (I highly recommend it to anyone who's curious. Good luck, Wil! I'd send you some mojo, but I'm afraid that it would freeze on its way across the Great Plains. One question...how big is the part? Seems like a big one if you have to go through several hoops and meet with the director. So set us straight. Big role? Little role? Heck, Wil on screen is reason enough for me to tune in.
And since this is the umpteenth time that I've read a comment mentioning Majel's character not being in Nemesis, I thought that I would pass along something I read while looking for Nemesis spoilers. Don't take my word for it. I haven't seen the movie because I'm waiting for the DVD and the deleted scenes. But I read somewhere (probably aintitcoolnews.com) that Majel was absent from the movie because Lwaxana had died sometime between IX and X. Its only a brief line in the movie and one that probably got cut, but that's why. Then again...it was just a spoiler. And I could be off my rocker.

I'm sure you will get it. It sounds like you were "on" for the audition. Unlike your audition for Coppola. I'll pop open some champagne on the day you get the part. In fact, we should all have a "Wil got a job!" party, all around the world! Every time you get a part, we all celebrate and post our interesting stories of what went on during the celebrations. :)

Wil,
Do not let the waiting spoil your weekend. The superbowl comercial weekend is here. Just 2 days away, wow! I have rambled enough, oh yeah!

****Wil on TV ALERT****
****Wil on TV ALERT****
A movie called "The Buddy System" staring a young Wil Wheaton plays Sunday the 26th at 7:30AM (Pacific) on the cable channel AMC.
Wil, is this a thumbs up or down? Worth waking up early on a Sunday? (I'd never heard of it until I was browsing the guide a few minutes ago)

Master Wheaton,
I do realize that my actions have left you and your fans feeling a bit confused, yet I have not come for forgiveness. I just wanted to let you know that one of my trusted associates saw you use the bathroom (#2) prior to when you tried to shake my hand. You had a case of stink fist me boy! And you all know that me and stinky fingers don't mix. I hope all you hapless souls understand.

Saw Dark City last night -- very cool flick. A nice blend of Nosfuratu/Borg with the "Strangers" and I dig Jen Connelly was a bluesy sexy in the lounge singing scenes. Other than Keifer's asthmatic delivery, I enjoyed each of the primaries in it and the sets were great -- very po-po-po-mo, if you know what I mean.

I heard you on NPR last night as part of a "Child Actor" series. Very cool to have you on the car radio as I drove home sice you are on my web browser at work every day.
Just one burning question: have you see your old buddy Corey Feldman on the Surreal Life? He is making such an ass of himself that it would have to give you some measure of glee.

Good luck Wil. NDL and I are rooting for you.

One question:
In Trek X Wesley is wearing a starfleet uniform and the novel says that he's now on the Titan with the grade of a Lieutenant.
But how could we explain his change of mind? Remember: In "Journey's End" Wesley dropped his uniform to "travel" around through the universe...

Re: Wesley's rank
Granted I haven't read the book, but I thought Wes had only 1 pip on his uniform in the movie. I shrugged it off since he was granted the rank of full ensign in "Menage a Trois" and, as a Traveller, one presumes he can dress any way he wants.
Yes, I am a geek.... =P

"dark city" was AWESOME!...if "i robot" is a film that quality we could be looking at sequels...and as i remember...some of the robots are in more than one of the FOUNDATION books.

note to self: *do not type long and involved comment whilst installing something because then you'll lose everything you typed*
Anyway, I mosied on over to imdb and left a comment on the I, Robot board about how I hoped you got a part in the film. Then I saw some one else's post enlightening me that Alex Proyas has his own website located at:
http://www.mysteryclock.com
So I checked it out and he has a forum there that is similiar to the soapbox where he reads and responds to posts. Surprise, surprise, your posse had already been there and asked him about you.
And I must say he was very professional and respectful about his response:
"It would be extremely unprofessional for me to post any information on this site about someone's audition, even though Mr Wheaton has made no secret of the fact he has read for I ROBOT. So sorry, wish I could tell you more."
Kudos to Mr. Proyas and to you.
*still sending the mojo*

Wil,
I'm sorry to hear about the audition for "On the Road." I just finished reading it about three days before you posted on your audition. It's an excellent book and you'd make a better Sal than anyone else. Certainly not a Dean Moriarty, you're too good for something like that.
I seriously cannot say how absolutely excellent you are. I've been reading your blog for over one year and I've always liked Weseley on ST:tNG. I can identify with you exceedingly well having gone to college for a degree in art history and now doing technical support for an Internet Service Provider. You do exceedingly well for yourself in proving you have grown beyond Weseley through accepting him. I admire you in your quest to become a more complete person for accepting your past and previous image. That takes Sack. Preach on Brother Wheaton. Preach on.

Looking forward to your upcoming release. Of course, since I'm presently in Taiwan, I'll have to rip a pirated copy off the net, 'cuz it won't be available here any other way.
If you have points in the production, let me know - will send you a cheque. Otherwise, I'm content to rip off a giant, faceless production company.

From the Vancouver Province newspaper: Friday January 24, 2003 - Page B5
...And a recent mysterious casting call looking for actors adept at body movement turned out to be enhancement for the digital role of Sonny, the robotic lead in I, Robot.
Sonnys described as "gently yet strong, determined yet obedient, trim yet muscular but not beefy, as well as ethereal, thoughtful, soft-spoken and kind.
The Will Smith vehicle is here for a 22-week shoot starting in April.
~~~~~~~~~~
Join the end of the line, casting directors. A lot of women are looking for a Sonny description.
HI WIL! SORRY, MY ENGLISH IS BAD, BUT I'D LIKE TO SAY THAT I'M HAPPY TO FIND YOUR WEBSITE, YOUR BLOG. 'CAUSE I LIKE SO MUCH YOUR JOB, I CAN'T FORGET "STAND BY ME". CONGRATULATIONS AND A BIG SUCESS TO YOU. OH, I'M FROM BRAZIL.
Hey, does anyone know the title of wil's book?
Posted by: arowsmith | January 26, 2003 1:58 PM
The working title is:
"Just a Geek - Wesley, the Internet, and Me."
Posted by: wil | January 26, 2003 3:45 PM
Hey, Wil. I'm sure you'll do fine and you'll
get the audition. Probably the reason your
stomach isn't twisted up and everything is because you nailed it. *shrugs*
Then again, I am an optimist.
and the crack about Kimmel's family was funny.
nice. :)
Posted by: Marie | January 26, 2003 4:33 PM
I was on Win Ben Stein's Money this past season. Not to wax your car too much but the whole time I was up there trying whip some conservative butt, all I could think on every utterance out of the lesser Kimmel clanmember's mouth was "Why-oh-why can't Wil be here?"
One of the contestant coordinators had told us you were in the front running, but that they had decided you looked too nice a person or some such thing. Based on what I saw, if you call everyone in sight a homosexual you should be a lock next time around.
PS: Best wishes with I Robot. Excellent material and an excellent director.
I can't really see you as a robot or in a science fiction film or series anymore but good luck anyway.
HOPE YOU GET THE PART
Posted by: Rachael | January 28, 2003 12:51 AM
I so so hope you get the part - just to work with Alex would be fantastic!
He's my fav director - ever since The Crow - I've been following his work - still got to see Garage Days. Looks very different to his usual genre.
Dark City was also my first DVD that I purchased (even before I got the DVD player)
And ask him if there's ever going to be a proper Directors release of The Crow DVD - not like the disapointing release that Pressman and Most put out - we want Alex!!
