Two confused film makers approaching 30, who also happen to be sci-fi buffs and STAR TREK fanatics, seek out William Shatner in hopes that he can give them the sort of life guidance they imagine the man who played Kirk would be able to give. What they find is a washed up actor in a one-man production of JULIUS CAESAR. This unique indie comedy features a fantastic performance by Shatner, playing an alternate-universe version of himself with great aplomb, and numerous inside jokes for hardcore TREK heads.

Amen to that. I've often told people that I didn't have a father, I had Star Trek Re-runs. So, technically, I'm saying William Shatner is my dad.

If a DVD could get worn out, my Free Enterprise disc would be toast by now. It's creepy how everyone I loan it to ends up buying a copy of it themselves.

Bill Shatner is my hero as well Wil. I talk to him about once a week or so via Williamshatner.com, and he is always busy with some new project. I have yet to see Free Enterprise, but have heard nothing but good stuff about it.

Where Free Enterprise fails is that it points out too many of it's references.

When they're breaking up and he walks away and she says "Where are you going?"
He says "Looks like I'm going nowhere!"

That was great and it should have ENDED there. But then they felt the need to POINT OUT it was a Star Wars reference.

Ruined it for me. But still great if only because now I know how to pronouce "Xixor!"

I hope 'Free Enterprise' is better than Dr. Strangelove. We finished it in class today and I have got to say that was about the worst thing I have seen since Blair Witch Project. Now I have to write a paper on it. ACK! I still love ya though!

I'd just been reading an interesting online essay about (well, okay - the perpetuation of cultural paradigms through film and literature), and there was a good deal about Star Trek. It included examining the symbolism and overtones of the name 'enterprise', and also sort of debunked the myth about Star Trek as a beacon of ethnic equality.

We have a great 80s channel at my work. It comes off a satellite set up so no commercials or moronic talking. It's a lot of gems from my jr. high and high school days: The Cure, Public Image Limited, The Godfathers, Concrete Blonde, XTC, Sisters of Mercy, The Smiths, The Cult, Madness, The Specials, The Ramones, Depeche Mode, and Siousxie and the Banshees to give you a idea.

I was never a real big fan of star trek until I turned a i guess 8 or 10 and then i got hooked, and the thing i remember most about watching Star Trek: TNG is looking up to you. I know you must be asking yourself "He looked up to me?" but you were everything cool to me at that time hell you still are. When TNN was doing that marathon and you and other cast members were saying stuff in between commercials i was cracking up at you cause they kept bleeping you out and yeah it just made me laugh and it reminded me of well me cause i live in a very small town and sayign goddamn is an immortal sin in which you won't live down and yeah it just reminded me how much i looked up to you and yeah i'm just not shutting up now so i'll think i will save some embarrassment and stop. lmao.

More Wil! More Wil! Gotta love the new TNN for giving us so much more Wil than we've ever had.

For those that don't know... TNN will be running that behind the scenes looks at TNG this week so everyone can get their Wheat-on. Then on Friday it's TNG uncut which should be interesting.

What I don't quite get and perhaps Wil, you could shed some light on this. I know that TNN is part of the Viacom family of companies hence all the Trek-tacular showings of TNG. However, so is UPN and it has hardly been used as a full on/full blown Trek promotion vehicle like TNN but why?

I've been away from this site awhile tending to my newborn son and it's great to be back checking on all things Wil. Hope your book is going miraculously well.

"Fantastic Voyage" was a cool movie.
I laughed hard at "Galaxy Quest" and I've only seen a few episodes of TNG. I did enjoy Shatner's appearance on SNL when he addressed all the Trek geeks. Free Enterprise sounds like an entertaining film.

FREE ENTERPRISE is a really cute, witty movie -- the perfect film for genre buffs, especially those who remember the 70's and 80's... I saw a midnight showing in Westwood when it was first released, and to my astonishment, someone I worked with at the time -- Dan Schweiger, who is a professional music editor -- had a speaking role in the movie (as, get this, "Schweiger" who works behind a sound board!).

Toupee or not toupee, give Shatner a lot of credit for his sense of humor, and willingness to poke fun at his own image. He's really quite wonderful in the movie...but yeah, he is, after all, just playing an exaggerated version of himself.

I heard that the filmmakers had envisioned a sequel to FREE ENTERPRISE, involving a character's obsession with Princess Leia/Carrie Fisher, but I don't know if it's come to any kind of reality.

So Wil, what's the status of your book? Do let us know. And contrary to what people might believe, self-publishing is actually more respected than it used to be. (Anne Rice, Jack London, and Robert Walker all started out by self-publishing, I think.) Granted, it can be expensive, but the printing options available nowadays make it much more affordable -- even for printing just 100 copies, too.

But there's something beneficial about the experience, more than merely seeing something you've written in print. You have control, and, especially, you set your own pace. Book publishing is a really nasty business, and even the very best of scenarios (your manuscript lands you and agent who makes you a killer deal with a publishing house, the books sells a fortune, and you option the movie rights for more money than your parents ever made in their lives) can be tiresome. Unless your subject is timely (a non fiction work, say, of recent world news events) the "normal" waiting period for a book to hit the shelves can be up to a year or more. Also, book editors have control over manuscripts not unlike movie studio heads with a director's film; they cut, revise, and even RENAME the book into something that the author did not intend.

Self publishing has, in many ways, gained more respect over the last few years, and on a personal level, is really the most rewarding way for a writer to see the product of their labors. I wrote a book last year and had it published; while not perfect, and I'd like to make changes in the future should it be re-printed, I take a lot of joy in seeing it on a few bookshelves.

Promoting the book was the hard part, because, essentially, I had NO promotion. I didn't print many copies, but sent some copies out for reviewers via discussion boards and the like. Many copies I was obligated to give out to friends and family, too... I was discouraged that many reviewers did not bother to even consider it for review due to the small number of copies printed, but then again, the handful of reviews I DID receive made it all worth it. (It is with some humor and amusement that I can say that my book ranked 2,300,000th place on Amazon's bestseller list last month! I didn't know the list went that high...)

I think Wil will have a MUCH easier time than I, as he is a celebrity (yes, Wil, you are -- don't deny it), and the curiousity factor for his book from such a devoted and widespread fan base is going to be inevidably high.

But my favorite thing about publishing is, when it's over, I'll never have to ask myself "What if...?" Acknowledged or ignored, richer or poorer, a wrote a bloody book, and did what I could to make it more than just a flimsy manuscript gathering dust atop a shelf...

Can you put some of your drawings on your site, and if you don't have any draw some now and do it!!!!
