October is a pretty good month, except for the cold. I'm over by the ocean and it's freezing already. Brrr! Halloween is fun though.

Ah Autumn. You should write a post about how the leaves fall and how pretty it is when you're walking under some trees and the sun is out, and its not too cold, or too hot, just...perfect.
Halloween is spiffy. But I can't go trick-or-treating anymore!
BOO!
:)

my reasons:
bonfires
trees so colorful they look like they've caught fire
Pumpkin blizzards from DairyQueen
burning jack o'lanterns
taking my daughter trick or treating
more time at night for reading WWDN! Wil, you rock. your book rocks. 'nuff said.

Well, autumn gets started at the *end* of October in Los Angeles, at least. We usually have at least one more heatwave just when you thought you could put away your shorts.
On the other hand, all "autumn" really means around here is that it's chilly enough in the morning to need a jacket, warm enough in the afternoon to need a tanktop. Then there's winter, which is when everything's pretty and green and growing and the out-of-staters laugh at all the pansies who complain when it drops to fifty-five Fahrenheit.

woo hoo! comments! Man, I love Halloween Haunt and miss it soooo stinking much since I've been in the midwest. Luckily, I'm going to my friends' wedding in Whittier next week so I get to go for the first time in 4 years! Pumpkin Ice Cream also rocks.

It's going to drop to 55?!
*panic*
Oh crap! I have to drive tomorrow!
*flee*
;)

Try waking up to a brisk 29 in the morning! BRRR - far to early for that kind of weather - but that was my experience this morning.

Oh how I love Halloween Haunt as well!! In fact I have a funny story that I doubt you would remember, but heck lets see.
If I could remeber which year, I want to say 91 In line "Lair of The Vampire" in Camp Snoopy when the line was wrapped around the Merry-go-Round. I was in line right in front of you, and about 4 of your friends. I looked behind me and I was like, no way thats Will Wheaton. My friends where telling me, no its not, But I was sure it was. So here I am look a big ol geek going thats him, he was in the move, blah blah blah... so, I was not paying attention to the head of the line. Finally we are the next group to get let in and I still have my back turned to the maze entrance trying to see if you where you (which I was sure of but ya know :) ) Then all of the sudden I get a poke on my sholder, I thought is was the line guy telling us to movbe forward, but I turn and its this big ugly moster and I screamed and jumped so hard that I fell right on my butt, right in front of you, and man you laughed your a.. off. And of course, all I could do was laugh, it was hestrical.
So anyway. It was a long time ago but its a fun story. Oh and I worked the haunt for 6 years in a row 95-2000. Its a blast! ! !

I am a kindergarten teacher so I get to participate in the kiddie Halloween things and have an excuse to do it!
I'm looking forward to:
*Pumpkin picking with my class at a farm and then going through the goofy Haunted Hayride.
*Making jack-o-lanterns.
*Decorating the outside of my house with Halloween items. (Hubby and I went overboard buying Halloween things.)
*Taking a walk with hubby through a park when the leaves turn colors.
*Hot chocolate on cold nights.

That last reason, I think, is one of the most important...HOCKEY!!!! And the Avalanche are gonna take it all this year!!!! (etc., etc., etc., ad nauseam--I've posted this a couple other places thusfar)
My wife likes the pumpkin angle, too...soon I'll have to go to Williams-Sonoma or Cost Plus or someplace like that so she can get her pumpkin butter. (Like apple butter, but with pumpkins.) This is the only time of year you can find it in stores...and she *loves* the stuff.
And, since the Rockies sucked out again this year, we're rooting for the underdogs...the Cubbies and the Red Sox.

Fresno hasn't figured out it's fall. I've already made Pumpkin custard and cake....and bought two very large pumpkins which set me back 25 bucks. Ah, remember when they were like 2 bucks max!?
Posted by: Michele | October 2, 2003 11:26 PM
Alexa, I wish I knew how to make pumpkin custard!

I noticed the colour of the leaves changing about three weeks ago over here in England. Autumn is my favourite season; so many fantastic shades of colour. Sunshine on an autumn day is just amazing, especially when you're out walking in the countryside with leaves crunching underfoot.

Hmmm punkin ale??
Sounds intriguing.
I love punkin spice coffee...
yeah

Wil
Are you sending Ryan or Nolen to the poker match in Vegas?
Posted by: dave | October 3, 2003 05:08 AM
Washington state has finally figured out it's fall. But then it changes its mind somewhere around four o'clock pm...
Pumpkin ale is SO good! We make sure there's a constant supply here, as the stores stock up on it and stack it in the hundreds near the entrances. ;)
The kind we drink is originally from Buffalo Bill's Brewery in Hayward, CA, but says it's been brewed and bottled in Portland, OR.
It's nummy. :)
Not long till the winter brews come out!

October is the best month for running, weather-wise, in the Northeast (and elsewhere, too, I guess).
It also features the single best sleeping night of the year, the day the clocks get turned back.
Posted by: Ryan | October 3, 2003 07:14 AM
Comments?!?!
Also, pumpkin ale? Somehow that doesn't sound good at all.
But yeah, the weather has been wonderful this week, even in Houston. Dry, no rain or humidity, and only getting up to 81 or 82 during the day!
Considering the AC in my car has been broken since June, that's a real godsend.

By the way Wil,
Which baseball team are you rooting for?
I want to see the Cubs at least make it to the to the NLC, I'm a sucker for the underdogs, but as for winning the worldseries, I'm still undecided sense my poor team fell pretty flat this year.

My husband and I honeymooned at Knott's two years ago. We got to see the pre-Hallowe'en set ups and got a free night to go through after dark since we were guests. I loved it. It was cool.

Punkin Ice Cream
Truly, the only reason you need to like fall.
Posted by: Meggo | October 3, 2003 04:28 PM
Oh, god, hockey. My Hockey Player is riding a cloud right now. Our season just started and he's just thrilled.
I love October. It smells like winter right now if you go outside.
Posted by: IcyNymph | October 3, 2003 04:55 PM
I like pumpkin scones too. Mmmm... and Colossus backwards at Magic Mountain. Not to mention Santa Monica on Halloween night. I don't think I've ever seen such awesome costumes in my life!

I love, and I mean LOVE Halloween. I think if there were presents, I would actually like it more than Christmas. As it is, it is close.
When I was a teenager, my parents moved into a subdivision. I was 13, and thus 'too old' to trick-or-treat anymore. So I would get spooked out, decorate the house, and hand out the treats. For 8 years, I was known as 'The Scary Lady' in the subdivision, and kids would wait to come to our house until after 6 when they knew I'd be home.
First, I'd slick my hair into a severe bun, paint dark circles under my eyes, shade my cheeks to appear sunken, and wear black lipstick. Next would come a filthy 'blood' covered apron, and my mom's butcher knife. I'd either rig up the door so that when the kids approached, the door would open so that they could see me waiting at the top of the stairs, or run to the door, throw it open and growl 'What!?' I made at least 2 kids cry in fear every year.
Ah, fond memories.
((Not to mention the absurd amount of time and money I spend on costumes every year. :)))

I'm personally hoping the Twins can hang in there and go to the ALCS. Here in MN snow, even significant snow in October isn't rare.
we've already had temps in the teens.
and pumpkin blizzards rule.

oh hockey.... and Halloween.... oh yeah... and October is the month when the weather where I live starts to resemble something from a planet that would support human life.
Nevermind that I'm technically too old for Halloween, I'll take any excuse to dress up!
Posted by: Weaselon | October 5, 2003 05:09 AM
so you're a knotts person eh? i always heard it was scarier than Universal. I worked for Universal Hollywood for 3 years for their Halloween Horror nights. Literally the best time in my life, as well as the best job I've ever had...the last year was the best, I was a redneck pig weielding a chainsaw.....scaring everyone all over the park!
Posted by: Bongdust | October 5, 2003 04:05 PM
Pumpkin...mmmm....
What I'm really looking forward to this October are two things:
First, I plan to wait for peak colour in the foliage, and then drive out to the Deam Wilderness and climb up the 200-foot ranger tower and gaze on the calico of treetops.
Second, I plan to hold a ritual Burning of the Loan Payment Book somewhere around the 27th, when I send in my FINAL CAR PAYMENT!!!!
Then I'll wait until November 1 and buy pumpkins at 75% off and make a helluvalotta pie. (; (You're all invited to come over and share it.)

I love October because it's the middle of spring here in Australia. We've just got the spring rains here in Brisbane and it's fantastic.
We don't do Hallowe'en here in Australia and sometimes I think we're missing out when I see what fun you Americans have :-)
Glad to see you're enjoying this time of year. A lot of people get down because Christmas is approaching.

great weather, crisp in the moring and fresh in the afternoon. Events galour, Halloween parties like no other and the cheapest Booze in North America. See you there Wil.

Yes! Not so big on the punkin ale, but I am lovin the fact that that playoffs are, and my hockey pool draft is in four days.

My favorite season is autumn, and my favorite holiday is Halloween. When I think of Octobers and what I love about them, I love a crisp cool day where the sun stares you right in the face, and the wind blows orange and curly locks, when I can finally put on my brand new huggable sweater, ride my bicycle to work in my comfiest boots and the ravens croak at me from the treetops. I'm 35 and I still dress up for Halloween. I'm going to be a fairy queen that night, and the next night, a vampire at what I am very sure will be a lovely little Vampire Ball of Despair, in a drop-dead-autumn-red dress. I love punkin everything - punkin colors, punkin decorations, punkin carvings, Godiva punkin truffles, punkin tsimmis. Check out Jamba Juice - they have a punkin smoothie right now. . . mmmmmmmm.
And one OTHER thing! People these days STILL don't know how ta tie down their punkins.
Love
Squeedle
