add it up
Holy crap.
I have an actual Audition tomorrow, for a pilot!
This show sounds hilarious, and right up my alley: It's about a married couple in their early 30s, and how they reconcile their punk rock past with their pottery barn present.
Funniest thing: I'm not reading for the husband with the punk rock past . . . I'm reading for the part of his new neighbor . . . who is an uptight conservative, whose idea of a good time is discussing the latest mid-sized SUV.
Talk about playing against type!
Comments
Let me be the first to say "Good Luck!". Sounds like a great idea.

You Go Wil!!
Posted by: Jeanine | March 4, 2004 10:26 AM
Its a shame you aren't reading for the husband, it sounds like you would really be perfect for that role. Maybe you'll go in to read and make an impression for that role anyway! Best of luck.

Woohooooo Wil! How stinkin' exciting! Break a leg!
Posted by: Rosemary | March 4, 2004 10:35 AM
And here I was, just telling the spouse last night that "of course, Wil would be up for returning to acting if the right opportunity came along."
Now if I could just predict the winning lottery numbers as easily...
Great going, Wil; let's hope the show's another "Everybody Loves Raymond", not "The Mullets". :P

Way to go, Wil! I'm so happy for you! Break a leg!

I don't usually watch sitcoms, but this one I will if you get the part. Good luck, God bless.
Posted by: etherian | March 4, 2004 10:37 AM
Hey Wil, for what it's worth, I exchanged emails with Eric Garcia(who wrote Matchstick Men) and told him that they should cast you in the new Rex series that he's doing with SciFi Network. If you've not read the books, check them out. Anonymous Rex, Casual Rex, and the newly published Hot & Sweaty Rex.
Posted by: Jase | March 4, 2004 10:40 AM
Anonymous Rex is the best thing I've heard of in a LOOOONG time.
We went after it, but they want someone who is more "New York Street" and I am.

Posted by: Ichi The Killer | March 4, 2004 10:46 AM
Hey, good luck. I'll try to send out some good mojo for you. I really enjoyed your poker series. Will it be a recurring story or was it a one shot deal. I'd love to see you go in and clean the house out! Anyway, break certain vital body parts for your audition.
Posted by: michael frohling | March 4, 2004 10:51 AM
That sounds v. cool, Wil--break a leg tomorrow! Consider my fingers crossed (which is making it hard to type, but oh well).

Break a leg, Wil!
Wait...they *make* mid-sized SUVs?
Posted by: ste3ve | March 4, 2004 10:52 AM
Oh wow...good luck! It would be wonderful if you get cast and this pilot gets picked up by a network...then we'll see Wil on TV every week! :D
Posted by: teth | March 4, 2004 10:54 AM
Go for it Wil! I am already visualizing you in this role. Don't be upset about not going out for the lead, this part sounds better suited for you. Break a leg, and let us all know how it went.
Posted by: Keith Coogan | March 4, 2004 11:01 AM
Wait a minute Wil, what's this playing against type?
Did you and Ann rent a mini-van for a road trip with the kids last year and *mysteriously* like it?

Posted by: Tom | March 4, 2004 11:04 AM
Good luck, Wil!
Well at least in playing against type, you get a chance to do ironic jabs at the stereotypical uptight conservative suburbanite.
Be the guy we love to hate! :)
We'll all know you're really still one of us... one of us... one of us...

My second thought (beyond HA-HOO!) was "Break a leg, Wil!"
My first thought was "Crap, that's gonna delay any sequel to 'Just a Geek'.
Posted by: Little Guy | March 4, 2004 11:12 AM
I could see you doing the uptight neighbor. I mean, it's a comedy so it'll be a satirical , stereotyped version of an uptight conservative yuppie. Yer gonna be all over that.
Posted by: Midnight Tree Bandit | March 4, 2004 11:14 AM
Oh Wil, when you become a big famous TV star (again) will you still have time blog to us little people?
Break a leg. :-)

Sounds very neat-o. :D
Posted by: Stargazer | March 4, 2004 11:20 AM
Heh. If I were even remotely talented and had an agent, *I'd* go for one of those roles. Lord knows I know how the rebel past vs. contemporary present thing feels. Hell, *right now* I've got purple "Morbid Makeup" nailpolish and rubber rings from Hot Topic on my fingers and the rest of me is Coldwater Creek! (Although it's got me thinking about the same sort of idea that a few other shows had -- remember /Family Ties/?)

I think I'd be worried if a bunch of people I didn't know were encouraging me to break my legs.
So instead: Good luck.
Posted by: Isaac | March 4, 2004 11:25 AM
Cool! Think of how much fun you'd have taking pot-shots at yuppies! SWEET.
Posted by: Scott | March 4, 2004 11:25 AM
That part is you, somehow... don't ask me why. Perhaps because I think you'd have fun with it. Good luck.
Posted by: synchronicity | March 4, 2004 11:27 AM
I think the most amusing thing about you playing a conservative person is when people who don't really know you (or at least don't read wwdn) start to associate you with that role. The units of irony on this one are off the scale!
In any case, good luck thar, sir.

Playing against type is ... how do the youn'ung's say it..... Tha Bomb. Hope the concept works out and doesn't become "Culturally Mismatched Wacky Comedy 42." Count me in with the other poster who doesn't normally watch sitcoms, but I would tune in to this one to give it a shot.

it's alot more fun playing against type than to be some character nearer to your own personality...because you know all the most irritating quirks of that type of person...if you were an uptight conservative you wouldn't necessarily be able to get to the heart of such a guy.

Hey, I just saw (night before last on cable here in Australia) a repeat of the Outer Limits story you were in with Robert Patrick and Graham Greene. I thought you were great in that.

Rock ON! Wil's got a pilot audition! Hopefully this translates to more Wheaton on my TV other than reruns of TNG on SpikeTV. Can't beat that, though, since "The Manly Geek" is on "The Manly Network..."
Oh yeah, have you called Sean yet? Call him, man, call him! The Oscar hype has to be dead by now, and if it isn't, I'm sure he'd love to hear from and old friend and co-star...

Most of my male buddies have called themselves "Trekkies" for as long as I can remember. And "back then" I always claimed to be one of them, although it was a well-known secret that I wasn't. I was just a *huge* Wil Wheaton fan and frankly, Wesley was my only reason for caring about that show, I admit.
A few days ago I saw one of those old Star Trek episodes again and, though I enjoy my (almost) daily visits on your site and your writing talent immensly, I found myself thinking "Gee, I'd really love to see him acting again."
My point?!
Well ... lots of good luck to you, Wil *beams*!!!!!!

Posted by: synchronicity | March 4, 2004 5:30 PM
Hmm... from reviewing work that you have done it seems that you have to get better representation. I sell steel drums for a living... I realize that is a completely unrelated market, but some truths remain:
You CAN get work in animated. Now animated has gone to hell lately since any guy with half an idea can produce it now using his home computer/fapping source.
You can also get middling roles in film or made for TV type stuff.
I guess what I am trying to say is that those of us in the rest of the mortal coil are sometimes forced to survival jobs... I'm a fully qualified Quality Manager and Steel specialist and I did my time checking out videos.
Point being... perhaps you should reconsider your representation. The work is out there... who would have imagined Whiny Luke Skywalker to do the magnificent job that he has done as the Joker on the Batman cartoon.
Just a thought... Good luck on everything.

Hey Wil-
Good luck! Please do let us know how it goes. I really hope you get the part, because I'd love to see you on TV again.
Here's a snippet of quote from your last entry:
It was quite a contrast: when someone calls out, "Hey! Wesley!" I sort of look at the ground and wish I was invisible . . .
Don't ever be ashamed of the work you did on Star Trek. I don't understand why some people hated Wesley. I loved that character! And I thought you were fabulous as Wesley. Be proud of yourself- you, as Wesley, were an inspiration for a generation of smart kids not to be ashamed of being smart. That sounds weird, but anyway, I'm sure you know what I mean. I think I haven't had enough coffee yet, but what I'm trying to say is that you should be proud of the work you did on Star Trek. All right, I'll shut up now. :)

No way do you get this part. You're too liberal to even be able to PORTRAY conservative.
Posted by: Mac The Knife | March 5, 2004 6:32 AM
When enough time passes, and when he has a success that surpasses Wesley Crusher, I think Wil might come to appreciate Wesley a little more and may not longer feel the need to lower his head. (Sorry for speaking for you Wil). If I was Wil, I'd be hanging my head for the memory of who I was a person at that time, not for the character per se. Wil's admitted to his own past 'jerkness' and how it was tied to the success he experienced ST:TNG. I suspect it's hard to mentally separate all these things. But as I said, I think time will provide that, and future success even more so. At least, that's how it seems to work for me.
Again Wil, sorry if I'm speculating on your behalf too much. I'll shut up now!
Posted by: anc | March 5, 2004 6:49 AM
As much as I would have liked to be the first to wish you luck...I'll do it anyway. Good luck on your audition. It'll be good to see you on tv again. Sending some MAJOR *MOJO* your way, Will! I am sure that they will be smart enough to hire you!
Posted by: Dawn | March 5, 2004 9:15 AM
Actually sounds funny :)
Your character reminds me of a lot of early 30 somethings I know. Hope it's meant to be!
Posted by: Regan | March 5, 2004 10:33 AM
Good luck and best wishes!
Posted by: lee | March 5, 2004 10:47 AM
Hey, playing your polar opposite is good in comedy! Break a leg.
Posted by: Pete | March 5, 2004 10:48 AM
Good luck Wil!

It's the 5th ... wonder what he's doin' now?
....
Now?
....
Now?
....
Hee hee hee. GO WIL!
Posted by: Reena | March 5, 2004 12:17 PM
Hmmm. I love you to death, Wil, but it sounds a lot like that horrible sitcom "Rock Me Baby" - only instead of heavy metal, insert punk, and remove the baby. But nothing but the best of luck to you!!!
Posted by: EB | March 5, 2004 12:38 PM
Ah, Wesley, they hardly knew ya!
Wesley might be worried about the latests SUV. WW only knows what his step-kids tell him about vehicles. ;-)
Ah well. Playing against type is all part of the job. It's why they call it acting, right? I wish you luck. This is a damn sight better than last year or so, when you had no book out yet, no job prospects & etc. Now you have a bestselling book, another on the way, a job prospect, and you kick ass at Poker. Good fer you! Rock on, man!
Posted by: Gunnar | March 5, 2004 1:07 PM
The show does sound an awful lot like Rock Me Baby on UPN. Although that show hasn't really grown roots yet, so there's probably room on the block for another set of punk rock parents.
Break a leg!

Good luck, Wil. Though, I'm not so sure about the premise. I hope it's good.
Posted by: Marcus | March 5, 2004 2:13 PM
Good luck Wil!

Represent, Wil! The Posse supports ya!

What a treat for your fans if you do get the part! I wish you the best of luck. I know that you will be outstanding in the audition.
Posted by: Susan | March 5, 2004 3:30 PM
Will, you rock - good luck and have fun! I know auditions suck but I'm sure you'll blow them all away. Especially because you fit the profile so well...;0)
Posted by: Shelly Martin | March 5, 2004 5:00 PM
Please! Like you even NEED to audition. You should walk in there and go, "I'm Wil Wheaton, HELLO? 'Stand By Me'? 'Star Trek: The Next Generation'? Where's wardrobe? What's my call time? You, with your mouth hanging open, get me an Evian!" I don't know Wheatmeister, might be time to change agents. Anyhoo, go get 'em tiger!

Hi Wil!
I read this earlier but had to leave for work. I hope the audition went well. I'm sure you did a fabulous job! It'll be a real hoot to see you playing an uptight conservative! Hope it all works out!
Hugs!

I'd be so excited to see you on T.V. again Wil. I just came across your blog the other day while I was pretending to do work, and I've been really impressed by it. I hope you know that you already have a huge fan base who'd be willing to support you, and that we all know you'd be great in any role you take. Good luck with the audition :)
Posted by: Liz | March 5, 2004 10:26 PM
So....how did it go? Really cant wait to find out. Was sending mojo all day. Really hope things went well, cant wait to see you on tv again. Sounds like a show I would definately be a devoted fan to. You are awesome Wil.

jay: I believe he started on Lindows, then installed Mandrake 8.2 and upgraded to 9.0 at some point. He was considering moving to Fedora Core 1 at one point a month ago. He also looked at Gentoo, and has used Knoppix.
You can verify all this by Googling for "Linux site:wilwheaton.net".

Best of luck there Wil. Just think, you might become the next Wil-son!
Posted by: Rick | March 6, 2004 12:58 AM
So, how did the audition go?
BTW, even if it didn't go your way, you did get exposure. You may be in line for another gig. In any case, I hope you get long term work soon.

Wil
Dude the part is SOoooo YOURS!! You already own it! Yours for the taking. Everything else is but a formality. Relax, focus, think on your feet, play it loose...
Sending MONDOMOJOHOOPAHLOVEAGEKARMAFESTFOO your way!
Oh and have lots of fun :)
Posted by: grace | March 6, 2004 2:47 AM
Break a leg. Well, not literally...
Posted by: Tara | March 6, 2004 3:34 AM
A few days late...but
Go Wil! Go Wil! Go Wil!
Note to TV execs: look how many households would watch TV's Wil Wheaton. Not even counting lurkers. Nice, hm?

You Go Wil!!!!!
Posted by: Dan | March 6, 2004 4:26 AM

Posted by: sarah b. | March 6, 2004 5:41 AM
Break a leg Wil!
Regardless of whether or not you get the part, auditioning is always such a valuable experience for a performer. I'll keep my fingers crossed though. :)

Playing against type can be fun sometimes. Wish you the best, Wil. :)
Posted by: shauna skye | March 6, 2004 8:16 AM
And it went...??? Fingers still crossed, but turning blue at this point...hope all is well.
Posted by: Abby | March 6, 2004 10:25 AM
Thats totally kickass...two thumbs up for you! Good luck!
Posted by: Caitlin | March 6, 2004 1:26 PM
Having been caught without internet access for a few days, the best I can do is say that I hope the audition went fantabulously. And, what the hell, good luck anyway, a bit late.
Posted by: Suzanne | March 6, 2004 2:45 PM
Way to go, Wil! *sends mojo your way* My hubby and I will definitely tune in if you're on!
Posted by: Danielle | March 6, 2004 6:01 PM
take in a pic of you with the blue hair, lol, maybe they will change thier mind on you should read for.
congrats!
Posted by: jen | March 6, 2004 8:50 PM
Good luck with your audition; however, no matter how good this part is, assuming you get it, I still don't think that you'll ever be able to get any parts that top Gordy and Wesley...
Anyway, what's wrong with playing a conservative? Perhaps, after having to act like one, you may even move from being a far-far-far-leftist to a Dodd Democrat... ;) And, after that, you may even become more like me - a George Will Republican... :-D

Jeez - my husband needs a new on camea agent who will send him out for stuff like that!
