i shit a piece of π

This morning over breakfast, I said to my wife, "Happy π day!"

"Happy pie day? What the hell are you talking about?"

"No, not 'pie'," I said. "'π'."

"Not 'pie,' but 'pie.'" She was clearly not amused. "Isn't it a little early to be drinking?"

"Anne, look at the date on the calendar."

"Yes it's march 14th, and you're going to watch WrestleMania dos equis* with your brother." She frowned. "Are you trying to tell me that you're taking a pie to Jeremy's house? Because if you expect me to make you a pie . . ."

"No, I don't expect you to make me a pie." I said, well into that area where you've explained the joke so much, it's never going to be funny.

"Today is March fourteenth. That makes it 3.14 on the calendar. 3.14 is also known as π."

She blinked a few times.

"Oh. It's π day."

"Yes!" I said. "And at 1:59 pm, it will be even more π day. Isn't that cool!?"

She took a long, thoughtful drink from her coffee mug, carefully set it down and said, "You are such a nerd."

Comments

*It's actually Wrestlemania XX, as in Wrestlemania Twenty, but we've been cracking ourselves up by calling it Wrestlemania dos equis all week.

Actually, it will be even more pi day at 1:59, not 2:15. (3.141592...)

Not valid in European countries :p

Wow.

I have never heard of anyone try to celebrate pi day. Have you rented Aranofsky's Pi for the evening? That would make sense.

Truly, the Nerd is strong with you.

I have apple pie in my fridge if you want some!

It's 1403 over here (UK)

Its my Birthday today. Happy birthday to me. I was born on pie day, bu id rather have cake and hold off on the candles, i dont want a fire hazard. So everybody have a good pie day, while i enjoy my B-day.

Holy Cow. You ARE a nerd! ;) x

I would have to agree with your wife there, Wil... Who actually thinks about things like 'pi' day-- that is just odd...

Is this cool, or what... I'm reading your note and I look at the clock and it's 1:59! Talk about serendipity!

I want to march forth to promote my favorate holiday, National Advancement Day -- March fourth...

And next Saturday is my personal favorite holiday, Alien Abduction Day.

but it's not really 'pi' day, 3/14 (and 3/14 1:59p) really are approximations of 'pi' to a given amount of precision, not the true value 'pi'.

So, happy approximate 'pi' day.

I knew that college math would come in handy someday, but I never thought it would be for this.

My high school pre-calc teacher celebrated his children's pi birthdays. He would have a cake and everything. One of his poor kids had to be up at like 2am so they could celebrate him turning 3.141592... years old.

He even showed us the home movie.

I never knew of this, and I'm a math teacher! I wish today was a school day! On a schoolday I have a freshman class at 1:59 and I could have really gone all nerd on them, they love busting me about that!!!

Happy pi day to you, too!

Seriously, I think its cute-wrestling and pi in the same day!

Make mine Lemon Meringue!

I don't get it. "n" is the 14th letter in the alphabet. Is that what you mean? What about "m" or even "o", they're also good letters. I think it unfair that you just pick out one letter and ignore all the rest of the letters in the alphabet. That's 23 other letters that don't have a day. What's going to happen to them? Don't you have a sense of compassion? What would we do without all those other letters?

Aren't those guys real big on Wrestlemania? Bulging muscles, like the Hulk. Can you imagine getting on a bus and sitting next to one of those guys? You wouldn't have as much room in your seat, sort of squeezed in between the bus window and the Hulk next too you - as you try to write on your laptop. And then the Wrestlemania guy would start looking over your shoulder to see what you're writing - and make some comment, like, dude that's an "awkward sentence" - get rid of it. Or use the ACTIVE VOICE. Then of course you would be friendly about it and agree.

Wil, you might just be better off taking up Pro Wrestling. Start going to the gym. That's my advice! And all these letter days - "n" day, "b" day "D" day - where is it going to get you?

HA HA it didn't even cross my mind that it was pie day you guys are such nerds!!

far and away the nerdiest thing you've 'bragged' about on your log.
The extensive D & D talk was pushing the limit, but....

wow.

John Amenta:
Nonono. Not "n" but "pi", the greek letter for "p" which is "π". See what I mean.

Ah, I get it! I had to struggle through Calculus in college, and then never found a use for it after I left college. It's good to see that Wil is making some use of it.

Must be all that liquid juice you are consuming.

"N" Day, eh?

Okay, that's worth a chuckle.

But if you start highlighting prime number days in your calendar...

GET HELP! :-)

I am weak by how geeky that was. We feel you, Anne. Hang in there. More coffee for Wil might help.

Ha ha My friends and I have been celebrating pi day for years! The awesome thing is that now we're in college and there are more nerds to celebrate with us! Nerds abound in my dorm. Every hall is named after a location or character from Lord of the Rings.

D'oh! Here in Australia it's only 14/3. We have to wait for 31/4 for pi day.

Come to think of it, 22/7 would make a pretty good approximation of pi day too.

As a 6th grade math teacher, we take pi day very seriously in my class. There are some great websites about pi day and ways to celebrate. My personal favorite is getting some of my 6th graders to sing pi day songs.

Happy Pi Day to you
Happy Pi Day to you
Happy Pi Day dear Wil (and all WWDN)
Happy Pi Day to you!

Do you also celebrate Avogandro's Day (Oct. 23 at 6:02)? I used to have a chemistry teacher who thought it was a Big Deal.

Happy Pi Day to all, and to all a good night...

When I was in fourth grade math class (a disconcertingly long time ago), we were learned about pi for the first time, and I pointed out, "Hey, today is pi!" ..It was March 14, and my teacher looked at me like I was some sort of mutant, but one without cool superpowers, just an extra set of eyebrows or something.

Anyway, ever since then I've celebrated Pi Day. I didn't know anybody else even noticed things like that.

Damn.

Anne must be wondering by now if your warranty is still good.

Dude, Wil... Wesley has really screwed you up. I mean...

Damn.

Speaking of which... what ever happened with your D&D game? I wanted to hear more about that...

Oh...my...God. You truly are the King of Geeks. I must run that by my math-geek hubby; unfortunately, his sense of humor isn't as finely tuned as yours.

Hey Anne! Next year have a pie made and ready, when he wishes you a Happy Pi Day, throw the pie in his face.

Now THAT would be funny!

And here Ithought March 14th was National Steak & BJ day!

Don't forget, tomorrow is the Ides of March.

Profoundly geeky. I doff my cap to you. :)

See, I've had an aversion to 314 for so many years. I'll just randomly look at a clock, and it'll say 3:14. Or I see it used in movies when people wake up in the middle of the night and look at their clocks. 3:14 into an mp3. 314 hitpoints in a game. 3 1/4 miles to the next freeway exit. Turn to page 314 in your book. Pi. It happens so much, and so randomly, it's scary. Not that I expect anyone to believe me. But it makes me fear March 14th. Bad things always happen. I just got done mopping my kitchen floor because I dropped a jar of apple juice and it spilled everywhere. Bad things, I tell you.

Oh, and Nick: Sucks to be Australian. There is no 31/4. April only has 30 days in it. ;)

Nerd!

I give you a virtual weggie now!

All through High School I quietly celebrated 12:34:56 PM on my digital watch.

I'm eagerly awaiting 04/04/04 next month. If I can see the time at 04/04/04 04:04:04, I'll be a disgustingly smug little fellow.

I give myself a virtual wedgie now.

This would have to be an American only holiday. Most other places ( as here in Oz) will never have 31/4.

It was almost exactly pi day at 1:59.26535 8979323846 2643383279 5028841971 6939937510 5820974944 5923078164 0628620899 8628034825 3421170679 8214808651 3282306647 0938446095 5058223172 5359408128 4811174502 8410270193 8521105559 6446229489 5493038196 4428810975 6659334461 2847564823 3786783165 2712019091 4564856692 3460348610 4543266482 1339360726 0249141273 7245870066 0631558817 4881520920 9628292540 9171536436 7892590360 0113305305 4882046652 1384146951 9415116094 3305727036 5759591953 0921861173 8193261179 3105118548 0744623799 6274956735 1885752724 8912279381 8301194912 9833673362 4406566430 8602139494 6395224737 1907021798 6094370277 0539217176 2931767523 8467481846 7669405132 0005681271 4526356082 7785771342 7577896091 7363717872 1468440901 2249534301 4654958537 1050792279 6892589235 4201995611 2129021960 8640344181 5981362977 4771309960 5187072113 4999999837 2978049951 0597317328 1609631859 5024459455 3469083026 4252230825 3344685035 2619311881 7101000313 7838752886 5875332083 8142061717 7669147303 5982534904 2875546873 1159562863 8823537875 9375195778 1857780532 1712268066 1300192787 6611195909 2164201989 3809525720 1065485863 2788659361 5338182796 8230301952 0353018529 6899577362 2599413891 2497217752 8347913151 5574857242 4541506959 5082953311 6861727855 8890750983 8175463746 4939319255 0604009277 0167113900 9848824012 8583616035 6370766010 4710181942 9555961989 4676783744 9448255379 7747268471 0404753464 6208046684 2590694912 9331367702 8989152104 7521620569 6602405803 8150193511 2533824300 3558764024 7496473263 9141992726 0426992279 6782354781 6360093417 2164121992 4586315030...? I missed e day altogether.

Anne is right, you are such a nerd.

And i thought I was the only one!

Well atleast I know i'm the only one to celebrate 'e' day on the 7th Feb at 6:28pm.

I'll let the super-uber-nerds figure that one out.

Its so cool to be a nerd...
Its so nice to know that we are not alone!

hey wil,
you are SUCH a nerd! but its one of the reasons we all love you!!!

had never thought about pi day before, but now, i think i will have to celebrate it! And lael, i think i'll be right there with you at 04/04/04 04:04:04!! how cool is that gonna be!!!???

take care
rach

Wil, what the hell was the true intention of this post? How in all sanity is this relevant? You have really got way too much time on your hands to know something as insignificant as "N" day.
Man, I hope you get that pilot you auditioned for because if Anne has to put up with more of these inane topics of discussion she will surely lose it.

Yes, Wil. You ARE a nerd! I was clueless for most of that log! I would never have thought that.

I know that this is very off topic but I thought that you all might get a kick out of this.
http://www.livejournal.com/users/rotzo/1401.html

Mark your calendars NEXT year when the Mexicans
celebrate the Cinco de Mayo on 05/05/05 05:05:05,
nerd.

Amigos,

Freeman.

I didn't notice the subject until after I'd read the post (LJ feed), and it totally cracked me up. I love that skit! :)

You mean that this is the first time this has come up since you were married?

LOL
e day too...last month...wow
then Wil really, REALLY would have shown his nerdiness
cours,e then Anne probably would hvae figured out what Wil meant by pi day if he had done e day

Instead of any nerdiness showing through, my dyslexia is
e = 2.718...
not 2.17 as I was thinking...hmmm...

I'll be damned. There are other Frantics fans in the house. W00t!! "I can make shit that looks like food!" "Yeah, so can my mother. Big deal."

what about mole day on june 2nd???

6.023 x 10^23

Today is also Einstein's birthday.

Nerds rule!

Wil,

Just once, I would very much like to see a picture of you wearing the following:

1) "Nerd" glasses, complete with white tape holding (or pretending to be holding) them together

2) White collared shirt with breast pocket

3) Pocket protector with various writing utensils, including 4-in-1 multicolored ink pen and hi-liter, stuffed in aforementioned shirt pocket

4) A black, slightly crooked bow-tie

5) Black slacks, probably of the khaki genere, or
possibly courduroy

6) Rubber soled Lab shoes

Fake buck-teeth are optional...

I have a conspiracy theory that the "Ides of March" is related to Π (even though I have heard that the 15th is the ides). Et tu Wil?

"It doesn't just look like pie.......it IS a piece of pie." Man.....that makes me want to pull my basement apart looking for my box of old tapes. The Frantics were the great.

"Boot to the head!" :-)

Happy pi day Wil,

Darren

I believe "Ides" translates roughly to "the middle" Therefore "The Ides of March" would be someting like "The Middle of March", which suggests March 15. But, seeing as how there are actually 31 days in March, then the "Ides" of March really should be March 16, as there are exactly 15 days before, and 15 days after, March 16.

Wil,

That's just too damn funny.

-Scott

Just started my blog and will be linking to your site using my brother's WilWheatonDotNet logo (red-Wil-white).

LMAO That just made my day. LOL I love it!

I just really like Anne.

"It was a nice piece of pie!"

"Juicy filling? Flaky Crust?"

"Big round blueberries --"

"THANK YOU!"

Heh. The Frantics are one of the main reasons I wanted to be in sketch comedy.

"I don't want to talk about a stupid little town, full of stupid little people, and their stupid. Little. Lives."

[pause]

"Oh, so you've been there, have ya?!"

Ann checked her phaser as she aimed it at her husband Wil. It was set to "Let Him Have It" Then Wil revealed his humor and she returned her phaser to it's resting place. And the lived happily ever after.

And so was the start the start of day.

--Jason--

Dude, I love you Wil. This whole thing sounds like something that my older sister would've done. Awww. I miss her. Random!

Stop the insanity!

Oddly...I almost had the exact same conversation (word...for...word) as between you and your wife with my boyfriend this morning. ;oP

Flaky crust, big round blueberries.

Now I have SOAD's "Chic'n'Stu" running through my head:

"Every minute, every second
Piepiepiepie!"

That god damn wrestle mania! My guy was watching it all night last night, how can people watch that stuff?! But I can forgive him 'cause we have never had a conversation as wierd as that!

Woo, Wrestlemania! (Nice to know someone else isn't embarrassed to admit they watched it - I watch every year with the husband.) The Rock-n-Sock/Evolution match nearly gave my Foley-lovin' heart palpitations, but seeing Benoit on his knees crying, in the middle of the ring, in front of a packed house at Madison Square Gardens... God. Damn.
Anyway, good thing 'Pi Day' didn't come up during the course of the show - you know how Rocky gets when 'Pie' comes up...

[Doctor Who moment]

"As easy as pie? As easy as pie?"

"That's what he said."

"No he didn't! He said easy as 'pi', the Greek letter 'pi'! Surely you know some basic mathematics, child?"

(The First Doctor and Tegan, in "The Five Doctors")

[/Doctor Who moment]

Actually, my old college, Carnegie Mellon, regularly celebrates Pi Day. Of course, there's a huge engineering school there, but we won't emphasize that...

Wil, go talk there! You could make a mint on the college lecture circuit. :)

ah, good old pi day. i learned about it a few years back when i came across a website detailing a group's celebration. everyone made pie's and they were in a circular room so they circumnavigated it 2 and whateverthefractionis times.

the local university has a society of pi that's going around and pieing people to raise money for charity... i hope they celebrated this day.

you shouldn't shit n, man. It hurts to pass that kinda stuff.

Wil, you're very silly, and I love you for it.
Joffonon, I love Dr. Who, too! I used to watch it all the time on PBS. Tom was my fave.
And BTW, Wil, I saw you the other night on VH1s the Best Week thingy. Pretty groovy! It was unexpected, and quite nice to see you. :)
-Alicia
www.thewagband.com

Of course Wil, you can't forget....

....."Redskins squeeze out Browns......."

Have a good post-pi day :-)

Darren

hehee, Pi Day is awsome! When I was in college we celebrated it every year. Though since I was a math major, that might not be that odd... We also had a Pi Sale every year for the Math club. We would sell out in about 45 minutes. Only $10 for 2*Pi handcrafted by geeks with little cut out integral signs on the top!

Yikes...

You get +20 geek point for thinking up something as crazy as celebrating π day....but -2000 geek points for not finding the symbol for pi...and using an "n" instead.

I had to re-read that first sentence about 5 times to try to figure out what the heck you were talking about. Was it an expleative so haneous that you could only refer to it as the "n" word?

Most confusing.

So you can maxamize your future geek rolls...

:)

http://www.htmlhelp.com/reference/html40/entities/symbols.html

It took me about five minutes to figure out what the f*&k everyone was talking about! But...ha! Pi day! How FUNNY!

It should actually be 1:59 AM, not PM... Many countries use 24hr time, in which case 1:59 PM is actually 13:59, and as we all know, 3.14.13.59 isn't nearly as tasty as 3.14.1.59!

It IS steak and a BJ day: http://www.steakandbjday.com/

when i was finishing high school and touring around looking for the correct university, i went to the university of waterloo on one of their tour days...

it just so happened to be march 14th.

anyhow... being a math geek, i was quite enthralled that they were having pi day celebrations too...

for example... on march the fourteenth... at 1:59 pm... on the second floor of the math building... they were giving out free pie!!!!

free pie!!!

(for anyone who wasn't following... that makes 3.14(the date) 159(the time) 2(the floor of the building))

My college had big pi day celebrations. Math quizzes and pie-eating contests, the number written out all the way across campus in chalk (up until they hit the road and had to stop, anyway), prizes for being able to recite the most digits of pi...

Ah, those were the days. And to think I almost didn't notice today was the day!

I'm even more of a nerd, I changes my driver's license to Pi. 031415926 OK.

(They made me add the 0)

I once saw a π on top of an actual pie, it was quite odd.

Happy belated π-day everyone!

I was so bummed that Google didn't have a special Pi Day presentation!

MMMM! Pie.

::Homer drool::

See ya at Grand Slam, Wil!

MMMM! Pie.

Mmmm.... Pi!

So, did you read Life of Pi this weekend? ;)

Oh, and re: Gary Blivin's comment above -- March 4th happens to be my birthday, and that's probably the only way the spouse could remember: "I marched forth on March 4th."

Now if I could just come up with something for our anniversary... sigh

Wow, I thought my friends and I were the only ones who celebrated pi/pie day. usually my friend Brynn will have everyone over on March 14th and we each bring our favorite pie. Sadly, she's getting married so I'm sure her mind is on that and not pie day. Time for the fun to stop I guess.

I'm not even half the geek you are!

I only get excited on May 4th

Finally, I can't lurk any longer. A Frantics reference! I may just have to dust off my old record player for a listen (I have Boot to the Head on vinyl).

"i shit a piece of π"

Big round blueberries? Juicy filling?

(This is a test. My original reply is in the Soapbox, WWDN forum. On my home computer I keep getting a message that the "above code" is wrong but posting at work is usually fine.)

I was so excited to see that you were excited for Pi Day! For the past three years, my friends and I have celebrated it, with a Dairy Queen cake and everything :) Hooray for Nerds!

I've never celebrated pi day.
But I think it's fricking ironic that Indy, who has been celebrating for years, posted his comment at precisely 1:59

Geekier than thou! Pi Day is also my birthday, and so I had it tattooed onto my person.

Wow!
I'll bet Corey Feldman never had such an original thought.
Even though the kid's had more hairPIE than the Beatles.

I just wanted to take this time to comment on this particular blog entry and let you know that this blog entry has absolutley no relevance or purpose of any kind whatsoever. It is 5 minutes of my life wasted and 5 minutes of my life I will never get back. No one has benefitted from this horrible trend of thought in any purposeful way and we are all the more stupid for having read it.
Thank you.

Can I just say that I LOVE your wife! She says the same things about you that I do to my significant other. He is such a geek sometimes too. Gotta love it!! :)

C'mon Wil, what did Anne really call you? I doubt she called you a nerd. Had I been having that conversation with you, I'd crack that coffee mug over your head for subjecting me to the most ridiculous topic of discussion ever.
N day. Pie day. Are you for real?

Well, if your browser is displaying "N" or "n" instead of π, I can see how you'd miss the joke.

It's "pi" vs. "pie."

why DO you Americans always put the dates back to front and have such trouble with spelling?

It's true. You're a huge nerd.

My birthday was the day before pi day, but my dorky brother sent me a happy pi day email on the 14th instead of a happy birthday email on the 13th. I guess since I have a math degree I should be proud of the kid - but a birthday email could have killed him?

Yeah every year G and R have a pi party. Everyone makes homemade pies and it starts at 1:59. This year we had a great crawfish pie and D's mom brought over a kickin strawberry rhubarb pie. I probably gained an extra 2.65 lbs. Good stuff being a geek with a geeky community. Hehe...

holy crap! my high school chemistry teacher made us celebrate pi day! there was another one, but i can't remember it. it was in october.

wow... that's weird. i haven't thought of that since. well, high school.. 1992? ew.

Well, you're not alone Wil:
After reading your blog, realizing that it was indeed Pi Day, and thinking it was the coolest thing ever, I wished my friends a Happy Pi Day. And they ALL called me a dork. Considering how important Pi is to life as we know it, it shouldn't be so underappreciated!

it's true what they say, all the good nerds are taken. I celebrated pi day alone, because all the men in my life just don't get it. they told me it is just a commercialized holiday and they refused to participate.

at 1:59 exactly, i burned my nag champra and ate blueberry pie a la mode (no reason, i just had a craving.)

i love you wil!
someday, my prince will come.

Every year on Thanksgiving, my mother makes two apple pies. One of them has a piece of dough shaped like an apple; the other, one shaped like the Greek letter "pi". And my brother and I often, when we ask about pie, say that we want a piece of 3.1415926535897932384626433832... (and, unlike Brad who posted above, that was from memory).

Of course, since e doesn't have the same prestige as pi, I've only memorized its first ten digits: 2.718281828.

I always love running into fellow geeks on the web - that also shows that the part of Wesley Crusher was well-cast: the actor is almost as much of a geek as he was! (Of course, as a physicist, I enjoy picking apart the Trek technobabble - for example, in real physics, a tachyon is a particle that only exists in "sick" theories because it has imaginary mass and, therefore, travels at v > c...)

I guess we are a household of nerds. My daughter and niece made a special trip to the market on Sunday to get blueberries so we all could celebrate pi day with a pie and pi recitation.

Now, what to do next year for e day. We hadn't thought of doing that one before...

it's great to be a nerd

You are a GIGANTIC nerd.

I like that. :-D

Wil,

Pi day? You are such a nerd. :)

This is why I love your site.

Keep it up, nerd-brethren!
Melissa

Wil, i would have given you a "Tyler Perry.com Medea" look, taken a drag on my fictional cigarette, pointed my finger, rolled my eyes in your direction and said: "Some'm wrong with you chile" and walked da hell off!!!!!!

Don't worry kiddo. I amuse easily, as well.
BTW, you got better pictures of the Mendenhall Glacier than I did, when I lived in Juneau and hiked Mt. Roberts last summer. Love ya. Keep it up.

As cool as Pi Day is, why didn't you mention March 15th as the imfamous Ides of March, the day Jullius Ceaser was assinated? That's my birthday and I think it's cool!

At 1:59 on 3/14, my car's odometer hit 31416. No shit.

I don't feel like such a geek having recorded the Frantics from CBC radio back in the early 80s on Canadian Tire house brand cassettes. With all due respect to the gods of television, the Frantics were much better on the radio. I still chuckle when I think about Todd Booster battling Moo Moo Bunnylips. My buddy Malcolm and I would laugh like crazy about it on Monday morning in calculus class.
Wow! I really was a geek, wasn't I?

I totally missed pi day (was on the Greyhound). Gonna celebrate it (along with St. Patrick's day) when my mutual geek of a boyfriend (Patrick) returns from France.
All hail the 3.14159!
Btw, did you know March 14th is Einstein's b-day?
Shoot... Eva beat me... :(

to Craig:
Why can't the University of Minnesota have a college math team... *cries* Can you e-mail me with what college you go to so I can apply?

Embrace your inner nerd!

hey, I never realized that my birthday is N day. (who's the bigger nerd NOW?!)

ja, nerdess

you smell... worse than me

you smell... worse than me

you smell... worse than me

you smell... worse than me

you smell... worse than me

you smell... worse than me

Hey, does that mean that we in the UK have to wait until 31st April as we tell the date differently??

Keep in mind that November 9th is the 314th day of 2004. (15:92 doesn't work for the time, pity.) Normally it would be November 10th but there's a leap-wobble.
