onstage . . .
I just saw my interview on The Screen Savers, and I have some thoughts.
Okay, wasn't it cool that they took a screen shot of my site almost immediately after I wrote the "backstage . . ." entry?
Stuff I like: I'm generally happy with the way I carried myself. It's always a strange balance of just wanting to talk about whatever comes to mind, while knowing that I'm there for a purpose (in this case, Barefoot). Anyone who has ever seen me speak knows that I tend to go on and on and off on tangents and stuff, and while that's fine in a 60 minute talk, it's not so good on a 6 minute TV segment. (By the way, anything more than 3 minutes is an eternity in TV time, and I'm incredibly lucky that I got as much time as I did today. I didn't feel rushed at all.)
Now. On to the stuff I hate: Red shirt? Bad idea. Washed me out, and the angle I was sitting at really accentuated the Body By Guinness, with bonus double chin. Oh, and how pale I look! It must be the end of Winter. Also, the way I did my hair at 5 this morning ended up making me look all pointy-headed by the time I did TSS. I hope I didn't look so . . . weird . . . on CFH.
I wish I'd mentioned TotalFark, Billmon and Talking Points Memo when I was asked about blogs I read every day . . . I'm not sure if TF is a "blog," but it's become one of my favorite places to spend time online over the past few months.
I also wish I hadn't frozen up on the question about my favorite Open Source project . . . I mean, Konqueror? Quanta? PostNuke? PhpBB2? Nethack? OpenOffice.org? I don't know . . . I answered honestly: there are just too many to pick one. But I still wish I'd had some sort of definitive answer. I feel like I pulled a Bush in the press conference moment and just rambled until I found some talking point to hit.
Overall? Very happy with the show I did today, and also very happy with the Call For Helps that I did (on Friday and Monday). Yeah, it was a good day. I didn't even have to use my AK.

Sorry, sorry! I'm new at this. What is Screen Savers and where can I find it/see it?

Ok, I have never really been a big fan of yours, but hey, great to see you are pretty much a normal person as I. Cheers to you and hope your career paths take you to great heights.

BTW... they are filming Friday Night Lights here and I can't wait to see the movie. Billy Bob Thorton is the star with some country singer, forgot his name :P

Blast! I keep missing it! Ah well, I'll catch it sometime in the middle of the night, I'm sure. Either way, I'm sure you were fun, Wil. You always kick ass on those anyway.
Posted by: Guillermo | April 21, 2004 09:57 PM
umm, Wil, aren't you supposed to be in training to be walking 26.2 miles in a few weeks? I think any concerns about double chins will disappear once you get back in gear --
Posted by: Eva | April 21, 2004 09:59 PM
I thought you came across real well....never much of a fan myself either.....your spot got me here....and maybe to a few other sites you mentioned......so I guess you succeeded....(don't know if I will buy the book though)....
Posted by: Mongo | April 21, 2004 10:01 PM
Heh, ya... you might just get quite a work out during the walk.. Ya doing any training?

That was a great interview. I liked the fact that TEchTV didn't censor you even in the repeat. Should be interisting what happens on the 12 o'clock viewing.

Wil-
I should have Tivo'd. I'm stuck at work so I missed it. Will they re-air it?
Posted by: Shane | April 21, 2004 10:10 PM
for those of you with dish network, tech tv is on channel 191 (in L.A.) and according to my guide, the screen savers airs again at 5am and call for help at 6am (cali time)
Wil i thought you were great, but what was up with the clunky black shoes? Where were your Chucks?
Posted by: lomara | April 21, 2004 10:14 PM
so its been like somwhere around a decade since the ST:TNG heyday, right? i watched alot of that back in the day and i wanted to be wesley. wesley was the closest thing to me, but a better one, and one to look up to.
i haven't really heard anything about you since, until a few weeks ago a buddy said to check your site out. then i saw you were gonna be on TSS, so i found the encode on the usenet and watched it and you are exactly who i thought wesley would be now.
congrats on making something of yourself. i'm right behind you.
Posted by: chucknoblet | April 21, 2004 10:20 PM
About the red shirt? Only someone in TV would notice that. Most of us have no idea how much of a tan you really don't have.
And, yeah, you started getting dangerously close to being beeped, but you didn't go past "damn", so most of us would think you were OK. Of course, those who were upset with Janet Jackson..........
I think anyone who would have been THINKING would have said something like Mozilla as their fave open source project. ;-) It always makes me smile when Microsoft gets all upset at someone ELSE giving something away for free.
It WAS a great interview, though. I never knew about this website before today.
Congratulations. You have another fan.

Thanks matty and lomara for the Tech TV info. All I have here in Irvine CA is Cox Cable. My father, who lives in Hesperia, has satellite, but I think its Dish Network, not Direct TV. I'll give the www address a shot. Thanks, again, for the help!

I didn't notice the winter pale or the Guinness pounds. What I saw was a guy who is honest, humble, kind and generous. A guy who deserves every bit of the success that is on it's way. Wil, you make it easy to be a fan.

Thought you did a great job as always. It's always a pleasure to see you on SS and I look forward to seeing CFH. You should cohost SS again in the future. You have a "real" quality I think your fans appreciate. I remember you hosting a few episodes of Arena on G4, what happened with that? You were way more interesting than the tools that host it now.
Anyways, keep up the good work and I look forward to picking up your new book.

I missed the show. Damn. I think you're extremely hilarious and endearing and would've enjoyed seeing it I'm sure. Even though I have no idea what show you're talking about.
Just started reading your blog (have one of my own on xanga which is pretty mundane and boring as hell compared to yours but it sure is fun) and wanted to say I really enjoy yours. It's great to see you have such a following. You seem like a very genuine person.
And the fact that you love Radiohead makes you even cooler. They are my absolute hands-down favorite band of all time.
Anyway, great site. Keep it up. Thanks for being yourself. Rock.

Dude,
As I commented on your backstage post... you did a great job. I could see you on screen and live just by turning my head. Don't be so harsh on yourself. :)

Hate missing all the TV you do, as I imagine all of us do who live outside the US, but the way you write makes up for it.
Posted by: Griff | April 21, 2004 11:13 PM
Well, I didn't set out to be a fan, that's for sure. A few female friends of mine have been reading WWDN for ages, and I was worried that it was a residual teen-girl-crush-obsession thing and wouldn't be my speed.
I happened to check the site when Wil posted an excerpt from Just a Geek, and that was it.
One of the things that Wil has been talking about is the recognition that he has been getting recently is coming from readers of WWDN and not Star Trek fans. I'm here to echo that sentiment.
As of a few weeks ago, I am now a fan. Not of Wil-as-celebrity, but of Wil as blogger / writer / pundit / open source evangelist. The fact that he has some awesome material to write about is just icing on the cake.
The appearance tonight was great, Wil. It was funny, fast, and coherent - far more than most interviewees manage on talk shows! The "can't pick just one" dilemma was a great way to buy time to think, and you did narrow it down nicely by the end.
Well done - I look forward to Call for Help.
As an aside, nice nod to old school Ataris. I was just listening to that album and reminiscing.
For those that don't happen to know the quote - "Today was a Good Day, Didn't even have to use my AK" is from The Ataris' "Up up down down left right left right"
Tell me that's not the best name for a song evar.

Hey Wil!
Saw ya on TechTV today (TSS)- what a fun segment! First time for me - seeing you on the screen in anything but Stand By Me or Star Trek, heh! You did a great job - stop stressing over how you look - whatever body image issues you have right now should dissolve once you start training up for that nice long walk. :)
Cant wait to get to pick up a few copies of your books! Going to yap at some of my buddies and see who all wants to put in an order with me! Keep on writing, Wil. We'll all keep on reading!
*big hugs*

Red shirt? You seem to have forgotten the Red Shirt Curse of Star Trek.
Posted by: Richie | April 21, 2004 11:34 PM
Don't be so vain. It's what you say, not how you look when you say it
Posted by: Annie | April 22, 2004 12:33 AM
Hey, just watched the interview off my DVR a little bit ago, great interview man. You're right, 6 minutes is an eternity on TV, but you filled it very well and kept the pace flowing. I'm really glad they didn't rush it into 5 quick questions, it was the best part of today's show.
Red shirt looked fine, believe me they wear a lot worse from time to time. The "CFH said it wasn't 'safe'" bit made it worthwhile at any rate. Open Source you answered as best as anyone could. It was an unfair question, Pat seemed to realize that right after he said it. I'd rather have an honest answer than a memorized list.
Thanks for doing the interview with TSS, it was honestly very entertaining. Maybe next time you can get them to let ya field some live calls. :)
Posted by: Tony | April 22, 2004 12:39 AM
Never forget your fake tan! My favorite now is the spray on tan you can walk in anywhere and get now. They just spray it on you in a booth. Looks fabulous. A little powder to reduce shine and men are done. You know how washed out you'll look on TV, so don't forget your fake tan! :) La Mer makes a great over the counter one as does Bare Escentuals (both in the tube.)
Please PLEASE don't put the fake bronzer just on the face and forget the neck and arms. Yes, tv anchors can get away with this, but they look like idiots and we all point and laugh at them.
Two good colors I like on men: Turquoise blue (stop rolling your eyes,) and teal green. They just pop on everyone (even women.) Stay away from white, red, baby pink and black (if you're a brunette. Unless you're John Travolta and really, he can get away with anything, sorry Wil.)
Don't forget to grease the teeth and duct tape the buns and smile... ;)
And you looked and sounded great btw. I enjoyed it! No one noticed anything you went out of your way to point out here, so stop that!

Quick thought Re: "Today was a good day ..." - I'd swear Ice Cube originated the quote the Ataris used. But I'd take Ataris' song as an acceptable answer if I was judging a lightning round of "Stump the Geek", especially due to the console references. :D
And Wil, you should worry less about how you look man. Hit the beach for a day with the family if you're that concerned. Exercise _and_ sunlight.
You went in and did the show, and it was an interesting and informative interview. And you had a good time, right? 'Nuff said.
BTW, your sincerity really showed when you thanked Patrick Norton for considering you "a friend of the show". I think he appreciated it.
Me personally, I think you should be a 'regular'
on TechTV.
Enjoy your writing break! You've earned it!
Posted by: Wolf | April 22, 2004 01:57 AM
Will - make a note so self: "I am much more critical of myself than those who watch/listen to my 'performances'".
TSS was fine. I think Patrick was feeling lucky to have you on the show.
And yes, 6 minutes is an eternity - and you earned it!
Has it been 2 years now that I've been reading your blog? If not, it's almost that. I have seen a big improvement in your writing, and most importantly how you feel about yourself and your career(s).
You were fine. It was entertaining. I'm going to have to buy your new book....
Dave
p.s. And just how funny is it to see yourself years later as "Timmy", or "Tommy", or whatever the character's name was, on reruns of Family Ties? :-)
Posted by: Dave | April 22, 2004 03:26 AM
Wil,
I have been reading WWdN for quite a while... But I don't watch TSS very much anymore - unless you are going to be on there.
I think you looked great!
Not only that, you seem like the kind of fellow we would like to invite over for a brew/bbq/whatever.
You are not "celebrity-fied" (no, not a word, but I think you know what I mean) - you smile, laugh, joke... you are genuine.
Love that!
I already have "Dancing Barefoot" and I am *demanding* Just a Geek from my hubby for my birthday in June.
Thanks for having *this* (WWdN) and thanks for being *you*.

I think that the shirt was a good idea it was funny & as a person hearing about you for the first time i think that your appearence on the show was good. it was not to layed back, yet not to professional you looked and acted comfortable.

Hey. Don't be so hard on yourself. The interview looked good. Now let's face it I am only a DJ/Karaoke operator, but I do know about image. And just to let you know. The t shirt was not as bad as your blog says.
Posted by: Matt Haegele | April 22, 2004 05:25 AM
This is all too wierd. Cosmic tumblers of coincidence? I was watching (while playing Diablo 2--my necro rocks) vh-1(?) which was showing child stars and where they are now. Yup thats right they had you on. Couple of days later I'm watching screen savers and there you are again. -- Great interview. Liked the shirt. Made me feel your just like all the rest of us. Now I'm going to have to check out your book. Never understood the big deal with this blog thing--but I'm going to give the ones you mentioned a look. Glad to see you have a life.
Posted by: Angel Gebstadt | April 22, 2004 05:41 AM
Well will as a hefty guy myself(just lost 30 lbs YEAH) I will say you didn't look bad at all. Patricks a really cool but pretty hefty guy so it helped to "cloak" those guinness muscles! any how thought the review was cool and not fan-boyish at all!
Posted by: Brian | April 22, 2004 05:42 AM
This is the last thing I expected to hear from you after watching your interview last night. I mean, you looked fine. I don't think they would have let you on tv if you looked at bad as you think you did. We are all our own worst critics though.
take care

Wil,
I think you totally rocked the Screen Savers yesterday. I just watched you again on the re-run this morning. Great Job!! Personally I think you should check into getting your own show...Maybe a 30min segment on Linux or blogging. I think it would do well, and be something new and fresh on Tech T.V. Keep it up bud, your doing well. My best, Matt.

Hey Wheaton, you did great on TSS. Yeah, your doble chin was there, and yeah, you had the mark of a serious Guinness drinker (by the way, loved your beer-drinking scene in The Core), but you didn't look washed out, and your hair was fine. A little messy goes great with your levis. You came off as relaxed, natural and witty. Personal interviews are becoming more and more a part of your element. Rock on!

Hi,
I am new here but I had to come to your site and check it out. I thought your segment on TSS was great. Very informative in the amount of time you were given. I have bookmarked this site and have filed this in my " Sites to visit daily" file. Keep up the great work. Can't wait to read your books.
P.S.: Visit my webpage if you are in need of help "nutritionally" for your walk.

Wow seeing how you have tons of replies and all i don't know if you will see mine but its no big. I just wanted to say i saw the interview on TSS and to tell the truth i really hadn't seen you on tv since star trek and all but i am glad that you haven't gotten stuck in that star trek persona, meaning that you have just been able to move on and all to bigger and greater things. But anyways i just wanted to say before your interview i never really had much knownelege on what the whole blog thing was but thanks to your info and checking out your site i was inspired to start my own and begin posting the many adventures i have gone through in my life. So to make a long story short (yeah i know to late right) i just wanted to say thanks. Later Days.

My only clothing criticism is that I missed your Chucks...what's with the boots? I liked the red, and besides, you were wearing it as a favor and that makes it even more cool.
Posted by: Abby | April 22, 2004 09:08 AM
crud! I missed it! specifically TSS AND The Core...had to work that night. But I comfort myself with my newly acquired copy of Dancing Barefoot!!! Super Awesome! Thanks to Wil for writing it and O'Reilly for printing up this copy I hold and Amazon for mailing it to me! Am muchly anticipating the read! WOOHOO! (hope I wasn't very far off topic there, but felt as though I was missing out not having a copy.)

Don't sweat the opensource answer, it was a real "on the spot, so give a brilliant answer" and you handled it great.

Wil,
I thought you were awesome on the show. You were full of energy and come off as a totally genuine person. I knew nothing of this blog until TSS spot. In fact, it was a couple of minutes before it hit me that "hey, that's the kid in Stand By Me!!". :) Now I'm trying to play catchup with you.
Bravo on your support of Open Source. Also, you looked fine man... stop worrying.
Posted by: JimmyEther | April 22, 2004 09:40 AM
I am glad that you shared your insecurities about your appearance. I know how it feels to think you are looking relatively good and then you see yourself and it doesn't fit the mental picture. Sometimes it takes a while for me to adjust to the gap there. It is nice to see that someone who I think is very cute/attractive feels critical of himself, too. Once again, your Human-ness is revealed and comforts others.
Posted by: seasnail | April 22, 2004 10:12 AM
Cought your interview on TSS yesterday. Very enjoyable!! I've been a fan since I saw you in Stand By Me. I looked at your site after your appearance and have marked it as a must to go to every day. I'm going out today to buy your book.
You have inspired me to start a journal and perhaps even my own blog.

Hey, don't sweat it.
I'd rather watch a 'celebrity' who is natural and honest than one who 'puts on' and is phony.
You're refreshing to read, watch and listen to from a hollywood community of phonies.
I loved the interview on The Screen Savers last night for it's frankness.
Don't sweat about the hair and the profile, that's hollywood garbage that I didn't even notice.
I was too busy listening to what you had to say that was interesting and honest. Don't get too wound up with image, we all get older and I'm sure you'd be happy to get out of the kid mold anyway.
Posted by: ck | April 22, 2004 11:14 AM
I thought the interview looked great. I bumped into it almost by accident last night, and was delighted to see you there! I'd never seen an interview with you before, and you seemed relaxed and happy. Friendly, like someone I'd really like to meet.
I'm a big fan of your Star Trek years, and I've also enjoyed getting to know you today via your website/blog. The interview clinched it. I hadn't gotten around to picking up a copy of "Dancing Barefoot" yet (hangs head), but I'm getting one this week. Looking forward to the new book too. Thanks, Wil!

Great interview on TSS Wil. After reading your pre-show entry about the weight gain, I was expecting to see Barney Gumbel, but you're being way too self-conscious. By the way, I think it's hilarious that you said "dick" on live tv. It showed that it was a real conversation, not a prepared bs interview. I hope the FCC finds it equally hilarious for TechTv's sake.

One more note: Watch your mouth. It's a TV G show but you said "god.... damn" and something else that I don't remember. Didn't offend me, but then I don't have kids.
Other than that you were charming. And since the rest of the world (outside of SoCal) is pasty white, noone else is tan.

Loved you THEN, Wil---love you NOW! You are way too hard on yourself! You were great on SS! I'd always wanted to investigate blogging. Your interview was just the kick in the ass I needed to get me off the recliner & sitting in front of my little square-headed boyfriend. Your enthusiasm was contagious--it just sounded like you were having so much damn fun doing what ya do!
Since I saw you (& by the way, I thought you looked terrific---still with the gorgeous eyes & you've hardly aged at all---NO FAIR!)I've been having the most fun ever checking out sites & the minds of these quite insanely inventive bloggers & blogettes! As a frustrated writer & non-stop talker, I have a CRAVING to communicate!
Could blogging be the answer to everyone always telling me to "Shut the fuck up, Brina for once---just SHUT UP!!!!" :::giggle:::::
Thanks for hearing my little voice.

Wil, the interview was great and I'll buy a copy of the book (both books if I like Dancing Barefoot).
I was sadened to hear that you like billmon - he's extremely anti-Israeli and it seems to me he would like to see nothing less than the State of Israel destroyed and her citizens murdered.
Continue the good work and thanks for promoting open source and writing great stuff.

I saw your spot on TSS and was pleased to see that you have a life beyond TNG. I agree with other posts - don't be so hard on yourself. You came across as spontaneous and excited about your various projects. Don't forget that most of us drag ourselves to dull 9 to 5 jobs just to pay the bills; and we all could stand to lose a few lbs. I look forward to reading your books.

Hey, I'm just rollin' in after watching The Screen Savers, and I must say that this is a great website! Being from the midwest, it's hard to believe a famous actor can be so down to earth. If you lived in my town, we'd probably be good buddies. The site puts a smile on my face, and will be added to the list of blogs I read daily.
Cheers!

I was working on a photoshop contest for Fark.com when i turned on the idiot box and looked up from the computer to see your face as they were getting ready for you to come out.
I think you handled yourself quite well out there. Good job and good luck with the next book.

I just saw you on CFH; you said a guy could find a web address on "our website" does this mean you are one of the techtv people now? That would be awesome, don't you think?

You are AWSOME! I saw you on the Screen Savers and Call for Help. I have to say you were pretty good, probably the best guest host ever. Love your website!!

Wil,
Saw your appearance on Call For Help, thought you did good. I'm a Techtv Chat Moderator, and I loved it when some of the chat room thought you weren't geeky enough. I was almost ready to scream back at them, "But he knows Linux!" Heck, even I don't feel safe using Linux and I'm 42 years old.
But enough of that, like your blogs and will have to cruise over your web site, been gone too long. Chris Pirillo turned me back onto you. Have fun in your new role as supergeek.

Hey, just wanted to come by and drop a little more love on the pile. I'm a big fan of CfH and TSS, and it was easy to tell everyone on the show was getting a good vibe from you. You came across as a great sort of "neighbor who knows the computer" guy -- real, a little goofy, friendly, and not a sign of double chin or beer belly (Roger's shirt looks good on ya!)
There's not much I can say that won't sound unbelieveably repetitive, trite, or even a little fawning, but I'm gonna say it anyway -- wow, I like you better now than I did 10 years ago. I keep liking you better every time I see you or hear about you doing something. I wish you'd do one of the larger Southeastern cons just so I could pony up my $20 for an autographed picture and 60 seconds of rabid fangirlism, because, even in my supposedly dignified middle years, I'd completely do it. Even if I felt like an idiot after and you filed me mentally in the ranks of uber-idiot, it would be worth it.
Thanks.
