blessing of spring

Anne and I were training yesterday, doing the neighborhood route, and we passed a bunch of animals: mostly other people walking dogs, but a bunch of birds and some cats, too, including a tiny kitten who called to us from the window of a neighbor's house when we passed. I thought about our dogs and cats, and the birds that are nesting in my backyard, and it made me happy.

Felix is doing really well, considering how close he was to death's door just last week. He is eating a ton of food, and is super feisty. I still don't want to get my hopes too high, but I think we have weathered the latest storm.

Yesterday, I gave him his medical catnip mouse, and he chased it around my bed like he was a kitten! I just love how he gets on his back, holds it between his paws, and kicks at it with his back feet. When he's done playing, he usually tosses it to the side, then passes out on it like it's a little kitty pillow.

I gave Biko and Sketch mice too, (they . . . uh . . . have glaucoma, or something) and they played even harder than Felix did. Right now, Biko is on the one cat-approved counter next to the phone, safely out of Riley's reach, cuddling his mouse while he sleeps! Riley is chasing a fly, or something, around the living room, and Ferris is zonked out on the floor at my feet. Sketch is sleeping in the tall grass under a tree in our front yard, and The Bear is watching Anne clean the stove in the kitchen.

It's quiet outside, except for the soft drone of a distant lawnmower, and the smell of orange blossoms and star jasmine flowers is pouring into my office through the open window. Two doves just landed in the middle of my backyard.

It looks like Demeter got Persephone back from Hades, and boy is She happy.

Comments

First to comment, finally, after so many years!

I love how we can really get in touch with our human side by observing non-humans. In many ways, they are the ideal that humanity strives to become. I, as well, take great happiness from animals, and giving them love is of great importance to me.

Peace

Springtime sure is nice... except for all the pollen. Ugh. :)

It's amazing the joy and peace we get knowing that our pets are happy and healthy, and well loved. :)

Wil,

My sister volunteers for an animal shelter, Hope Animal Rescue, in Albany, NY. She rescued a two-year-old cat that had been ran over, left to die, and nursed the cat back to health as his "host mom". She named the cat Finnegan, and now he's back to being in great shape and has just been adopted by a nice family.

Isn't that the best? I love when stuff like this happens. It's great to see that yeah, humanity can do something good.

Love to you and your family, and I hope your cat is getting better!

Bye!

It's a beautiful thing when you can look to your furry friends and realize just how wonderful it is to be alive.

Every day, I thank Venus and Hank for making my life better - and every day - they remind me why I need them around.

*grabs the red mouse off the floor*

I must go - Venus is telling me that it's time to play fetch and Hank is lick the shower curtain into oblivion...

*hugs*
Chrissy

It looks like Demeter got Persephone back from Hades, and boy is She happy.

That is just a fabulous description of a gorgeous spring day right there.

Glad to hear Felix is doing so well!

We love Springtime too!

It's a wonderful image of peace that you've painted there. It's nice to see you happy.
Star Jazmine smells just amazing IMO, and the cats sound just adorable. :)

Wil, you'd love it out here! Our property has become quite a haven for animals, especially cats. We call it our Cat Ranch. You can see pictures of many of the cats on My Cat Ranch MoBlog.

Wil,

I love you man, but there has been post after post of kitty cats and sunsets.

How about talking about some OTHER aspects of your life lately?

I can listen to people talk about their cats all day. I'm glad to hear Felix is feeling well today.

He's just high on life at the moment, cut the man some slack ;)

My cat is enough of a handful by himself, I couldn't imagine having three and two dogs. Oye. You're a braver man than I. And your house being bigger than my apartment (I hope) kinda helps too, I'd imagine.

That is just a great damn post. Shut up Buntz. Just kidding. What I really mean to say is, There are a lot of us who appreciate it when Wil waxes poetic about stuff like this, and we identify with it. Yeah. Thats it.

I'm not saying I don't appreciate other subjects too, because I really do. I'm just saying I really like these kinds of posts.

I'm glad Felix is improving so much and I hope he is out of the woods.

Take care and enjoy the beautiful day, Wil, Anne, and all the rest of us.

some days it seems like all the world is waiting in the wings to give us a show...and a good day.

Joey's mouse is called "Crackie." All we have to do is ask if he wants Crackie and he gives us more attention in the minute that it takes us to give it to him than he does in a month. After he's done with it, he lays on his back, his eyes wide open, and looks around at everything like it's the most facinating thing in the world.

Peace, love and cat nip baby.

Sounds idyllic, Wil.
Unfortunately, our cats are a little bitchy at the moment. We've had to put weedkiller powder down on the lawn, and so they're confined to the house for a few days.

Glad to hear The Bear's back to his old self, though.

Just a day in the life...of another animal-staffer. I loved the reflection, Wil. You started my day with a smile.

BTW, I finally had a chance to catch an episode of Teen Titans, the first one in which Aqua Lad appeared--and it sure was nice hearing your slightly different voice as the character, which I was still able to recognize. Kool! Hope you do a zillion...

Keep up the training, and good luck with the walk.

Wil,

Its amazing how you can turn something so simple as a beautiful day, into something even more beautiful with words like that. The conviction in your writing makes me want to go buy your book now.. Unfortunately I have to wait until I actually have money =(. And it makes me unable to wait til I can buy both books and read them. I am so pleased to hear that Felix is doing so well! And its wonderful to hear that you are having a peaceful day. Hope the calm lasts! =)

~*~Lotus~*~

Wil, my cats Fido and Tulum are wondering if your cats know the sublime joy of playing Feather? This is a feather tied to a string on a stick, and Fido and Tulum think this is the equivalent of catnip-flavored crack. We're going to have to replace the feather soon, as it's just a few pieces of polyester fluff now. Tulum bangs on the door to the closet where we keep the feather and yowls so loudly we can hear it from downstairs!

Spring is awesome isn't it?
The world just seems so alive and connected, you can really take it all in and appreciate it in a way unlike any other time of year.

I love spring!

I just ordered some Kitty Hooch myself. You should submit your testimonial to them if you haven't already. Can't wait to see my cats' reaction to the mice.

I hope you're getting some kickbacks from promoting KittyHooch. Atleast some free mice and toys or something ;)

Glad to hear Felix is doing so much better, Wil. Isn't it great to watch cats play? My cat Sandi doesn't do much anymore. She mostly likes to sleep, but I love her! Peace. . .

This doesn't really relate to cats, but I just finished "We Close Our Eyes" from Dancing Barefoot and - wow.

I've just recently discovered your great site and have to say how hooked I've become on your writing. You have such a way with words, and I can't wait to get my hands on your book. I'll probably finish in no time. I've enjoyed reading about your live and your wonderful family. You have really landed you best role. I send my best to you and your family and hope for a complete recovery for Felix. Keep up the great work.

Okay, that's weird. Your cats are "Biko" and "Sketch"?

Mine are "Miko" and "Scotch".

I wonder which ones are the evil twins...?

Glad to see your cat on the mend. It is nice to see the birds, cats, and dogs out except if you have neibor cats that sit on your car and get their paw prints on the car.

Animals Rule.

You should have gotten a picture of Biko cuddling with the mouse. That would have been a sight to see.

All I'm gonna say is: Beautiful. Simply and eloquently beautiful. Just one thing though: glaucoma? Lol.

The Kitty Hooch people are sooo nice! My cats have "glaucoma" too. *wink wink* and are especially frisky now that the birdies are out...

Whee!

Amber: I took a moblog picture of him, but for some reason Verizon is taking HOURS to send the photo to buzznet. It's been like this for a few weeks, and I wonder if they're intentionally screwing with uploads to buzznet so we'll use their Verizon service.

Anyway, it should be in the moblog before the end of the day.

Wil, when you called it a "medical" catnip mouse were you just saying it jokingly? I didn't see anything about a medical catnip mouse on the site. (Sorry if it was a joke and I was dense enough to take it literally. I have a bad feeling that was the case.)

I'm fairly sure it was a mild joke about medical marijuana.

Pretty funny, too =)

Puts on kitten costume, walks about in front of Wil's house...."This nice man and family will take me in...YESSSSSSSS"
No,really,a charming blog thingy...Wil's neighbors must adore the Wheaton commune.

Wil,

I swear in so many ways our lives our similar. As I write this, my dog Max is on my couch watching my Hampster Fiona in her ball roll around on my living room carpet. My cats watch from a distance as they no the are to good to associate with the likes of myself, Max, and Fiona. It is amazing how much pets enrich oue lives, and how much joy they can bring. Certain seasons bring out a lot of different actions in animals. Ours seem to be as happy as we are. My best, Matt.

Hey, I know this is suppossed to be about this message, but I have no other way of getting in touch. I wanted to know, I think I heard you were in a movie called Neverland or something, when is that coming out?

Wil,

Last summer a pair of doves built a nest in the rafters of the place where I work, right in the middle of downtown traffic. They raised five broods of two chicks each (total of ten). This summer they are already on their second brood and still counting. Every chance I get I walk out to check on them. Today my boss told me that's not part of my job description. Oh well; he can't watch me 24/7. Hope he's not reading this.

Freeman :)

Life sounds good in the Wheaton household!

yeah, animals rock the hizzaus. also, i just watched the episode of tng entitled, 'justice' wherein wesley is arrested cuz he crashes into some flowers that are in a 'punishment' zone, on this crazy planet where everyone's blond and runs. ...man. it was so bad. except wil was *so* cute, but the friend i was with was like, 'dude, he's 14 or something,' and then III was like, 'dude, don't kill my wheaton-high,' and then he was like, 'whatever'. i totally won. wil wheaton rocks my world.

hey wil,
wow, i love the way you can turn something so simple, that most of us take for granted (lets face it people!!) into the most beautiful piece of writing that captures it so perfectly! it made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside!

thank you for sharing it with us!
take care
rach

I'm so glad Felix is doing better!
Have you ever though about growing your own Hooch to keep the cats happy? If they like the toys just imagine how nuts they would go for fresh leave!
My catnip plants ended up so big that I picked a bunch and dried it. I now have a bag of mysterious looking dried green plant in my cupboard labeled "Gabe's Stash"

It looks like Demeter got Persephone back from Hades, and boy is She happy.

That is just a great description!

Good to hear The Bear is on the mend. Here's hoping!

Kitty Crack (TM) is always a good thing for your cat-people. We used to have a cat named Sam in college. He was the size of a small mountain lion, and had a little Hitler Mustache. We'd hook him up with some of the good stuff, and he'd roll around in it for a few minutes. Once he was good and whacked out, he'd do laps around the living room.

Without touching the floor.

We had so much stuff in the living room (couches, chairs, tables, windowsill) that he could go around the whole area without touching the floor. And he'd do this for about a half hour, oddly enough when TNG was on...

I'm currently the father of a bouncing teenage Hamster, and I love her to death. Animals ROCK! \m/

Hey Paul-

Check out "Neverland" info at IMDB (the film geek's paradise)at http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0349880/

Also see Wil's life in movies/ TV at:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000696/...

I had no idea the voice work began so early..."Secrets Of Nimh" in 1982?? I think I watched that when I was six...crazy.

:)

Thanks for the calm Wil. That was wicked awesome.

I've realized our purpose in life; it's to entertain cats.

Wil, I went and ordered three of the KittyHooch catnip mice on your say-so. Looking forward to seeing Star and Maui dip into the stuff...nothing but the best for our babies.

We've gotten away from the "intermittent snowstorm" pattern here for the moment, and are now in the summertime "intermittent thunderstorm" pattern. In fact, there were tornadoes out east last night...page Helen Hunt and cue up the Van Halen music!

Medical catnip... Priceless!
The closest thing that my dog has to a controlled substance is his rawhide bone. He'll just lay on his backand munch while making gurgling sounds of contentment. The little bugger weighs less than 30 pounds (Corgi-Cocker Spaniel Mix) but if you come within 5 feet of him when he's chewin' he turns into a junkyard dog. I've learned that it's best to stay away. :)

Glaucoma, eh? By chance are any of your cats blind in ONE eye? You see, this would allow for a "patch"... where-by, said cat could become a Pirate... ARRRRGGGHHH!!! this idea really excites me... you too I bet! Pirates are cool. Cats are cool too, but a Pirate Cat, swashbuckling and all.... well, just gets me in the pillaging mood!

I totally love spring as well. And I am glad I am not the only one cheesily enjoying every cute detail of it. Be it Ziggy the cat rolling around in our garden, or Daisy the cat sitting on a wall, meowing for attention, or the squirrels hopping about, or the fresh young look of the bluebells everywhere, and the light green leaves who have burst out overnite, and the ivy covering every single tree. And the pink blossoms all over... life is beautiful! I could picture everything you wrote, and it made me smile, too!

The spring never fails to amaze me. Everything is such rich green over here in Scotland and every flower is either in bloom or at least thinking about it. Gah i love spring time!
Oh, my Grandparents (who love star trek) are collecting the collectors magazine and DVD, so whenever i'm round there i sneak a peak just to see if i can find you Wil - o gorgeous one!

Yay Bear! *sends more monkey mojo to the kitty*

My first real look at your site. I am sorry about "The Bear" have such problems. I am glad that he is doing well at the moment. I know how hard it is because my son and daughter watched one of our dogs get ran over by a speeding car and we lost her day before Easter.

I also want to say I think is sucks royaly that ppl have been posting porn on your site. It makes me ill when I have all that stuff in my email.

Hope "The Bear's" test improve and he is with you and your family for a long time.

I've browsed your blog on an off for a while now, but have never posted a comment before. After reading about your cat, I just wanted to say I know exactly what you are going through, as we had a beautiful tabby longhair called Tybbi who had this disease as well. Anyway, so I'm sending lots and lots and lots and *lots* of get well vibes to Felix!! I am a total cat lover and think its so cool that you have so many cats!! My husband and I now have a cat named Charlie - an utterly adorable ginger tom who we adopted when we bought our house (he was a stray who used to sleep on our front doormat!!). They are wonderful souls, aren't they? Hope all goes well for you.

"Snow White Wil"? ;)

Wil,

Thank you for giving us a glimpse into your home, your town, your world. Thank you for showing us beauty when some of us are so overwhelmed by the darker bits right now. I needed to see beauty today. Keep up the incredible writing.

Lily

I'm so glad that so many other people are fond of animals because, as of late, my family and I have seen so many tragedies and we're very big on animals, especially cats and dogs (my sister really wants to work for the SPCA)...

I'm also happy to hear Felix is doing well! It's definitely a good picker-upper to hear he's recovering because, not too long ago, one of my aunt's and uncles dogs (both of whom were saved by them although were always suffering from one illness or another) passed away. As Lady and Princess were their children and when Lady lost this last fight, it took a very great toll on all of us. I really hope that Felix continues to overcome all his obstacles. Good luck with everything!

As for Spring- yes it's mighty beautiful... but unfortunately, living in Davis meant that for the first time in my life I would get allergies and man are they killing me!

~Terra

Now if that isn't a 'stopping to smell the roses' moment, I don't know what is.

Some people are in such a rush that they forget to do it. Like this post:

Wil,

I love you man, but there has been post after post of kitty cats and sunsets.

How about talking about some OTHER aspects of your life lately?

Posted by buntz at May 11, 2004 11:24 AM

Once again Wil, you have made me think and stop pissing and moaning about how crappy things are and appreciate the beautiful New England spring day and my two cats Tabitha 'the princess' and Cuddles 'fat cat'.

Life is good.

I'm taking the day off today and enjoying Spring up here. Thanks for the incentive to get out of the office, Wil.

Larry

My kitty gets all of the catnip he wants...heck with the "medical" excuse...I give it to him because it makes him happier than he already is. I call that little move you love so much "the chicken kick". It rocks.

Glad to hear Felix is still doing good!

Yay Spring!

Persephone and Hades - what a coincidence! We were just studying that in my literature class today. :):):)

I just moved and the furry guys and I are helping one another throughit. No matter where I go, my felines are my home . . . Glad tohear that Felix is feeling the vibrancy and perkiness of spring . . . thanks for such a heartwarming blog . . . you put good things out into the world :)

Damn you, Wil! After reading this post I couldn't help but go spend $20.00 on kittyhooch stuff. I hope you're happy. :P The Kitty Hooch people must love you.

Beautiful, Wil. Simply beautiful. Thank you for that.

May all of your days be as lovely and peaceful.

Hmm... My cat has never done the 'chicken kick'. He does box though. He'll get up on his hind legs (he has very good balance), and will put up his paws and box. It is super cute. Pets can be a real joy.

It's nice that Spring is finally in the air. We had snow only 2 weeks ago. :-P Today is beautiful.

Risen from the depths, straight out of Hallmark, but it is completely true. Springtime is one of my favourite times of year because tiny insignificant things can make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside...

Wil, I thought you'd like to know, my teenage daughter named one of our new kittens after a role you played on Star Trek. She named one of the kittens Wesley Crusher. We call him Wesley for short. You can see a picture of him and his littermates here: http://mycatranch.textamerica.com/?r=775945

About eight weeks ago I was watering my parents plants while they were out of town, and managed to water a stray giving birth as well. She left the kitten she had already birthed and didn't come back again for over an hour. So I picked it up, cleaned it up, and named it Philliam.

The first few days I had her, I barely slept, and spent most of the time crying like a four year old. She didn't want to eat, she was cold, and she wasn't noisy enough for a hungry newborn. I think she might have eaten the morning after I found her, maybe. I'm not sure, I don't quite recall. After I finally got her to eat, there were other things she wouldn't do, or something wasn't right about what she was doing. And she still wasn't warm enough. Eventually, everything worked out, and now she's a terror that has taken over my house, but I know what you went through taking Felix in, what you went through while he was there and getting better, what you went through when the lab results weren't as good as you hoped, and what your going through now, with things looking up, and not wanting to put too much into it.

Me and Phil will think happy healthy thoughts in your's and Felix's direction until and after he gets better.

I love to just sit and watch our cats sometimes. Even when they're sound asleep. They always look so at peace (until the kitten decides to be quite vocal, directly between my husband and me, in bed, at 3am. LOL But, regardless of their semi-annoying flaws... they're such wonderful creatures. I grew up with fish, dogs, cats, guinea pigs, and horses... and as much as I miss having ALL those... it's nice to have just a couple cats. And do you ever notice how they can sense your mood?? They're so amazing... animals... gotta' love 'em. :)

AAAAAAAAAAHAHAHHAHAHA!!!!

"they . . . uh . . . have glaucoma, or something"

So basically what you are saying is you get your cats messed up for the hell of it. That's hilarious, sounds like a party I went to once where they fed the dog beer. :)

Wil,
Good to read that you get so much joy from watching your pets. Looks like a mini farm. Glad, all are well.

FG

I'm glad your kitty is feeling better. I just two weeks ago had to put my cat that I've had for 14 years to sleep. He was a stray who used to follow me around the neighborhood when I was 10 years old... before I knew it, I'd been adopted. Just a couple months back he developed a couple sores on his back, which turned out to be mast cell sarcoma, a very malignant skin cancer. I think it was one of my worst moments, watching the vet put him to sleep, but when it's the choice of suffering or relief, how can an owner choose anything but relief? I'm happy you havent had to make that choice yet, but I know that when you do, you're the type who understands what the right decision is.

Snowing here. I think I need to move.
Glad your cats are doing better. Our Puck has hyper thyroid. He's very old and now very skinny.
He sleeps alot and is a cranky old man. The others, Aspen, Jinx and Taboo, are also old, but fat a full of life. Don't know where this is going, other than I hate snow and I wish Puck was in his Spring rather than in his Winter.
