I have to agree with Corey S. The cover really has a feeling of vulnerability and honesty to it. I've been excited about buying your book for a while now.
Congrats comrade, great cover, great pic, and no trace of a double-chin. Awesome cover for what I know will be/is an awesome book. Can't wait to get my copies.
You've probably accomplished more in the past few years than most do in their intire lives. You definitely have something to be proud of. I'm happy things are coming around and that you're getting the recognition you deserve. Finally!
Too cool! Can't wait to read it...and to find out who the mysterious author of the Forward turns out to be. WFS? Patrick Stewart? Jerry Seinfield? One of the Coreys? Martha Stewart? Danny Elfman?
Cool, though you kinda look scary... slightly emotionless... like maybe you're just barely holding back your dark emotions like a Vulcan who's gone crazy...
Wait, what was I saying? Oh yeah, can't wait to get the book, nice cover too.
You are just the cutest EVER. And I can't wait to read it.
If it's not terribly tacky of me to comment -- I feel like "unflinchingly honest tales" is such a mouthful -- what's wrong with just "unflinching tales"? Where the honesty is pretty much implied? Me, I'd even just go for "Tales of..." and leave off the qualifiers entirely. But, anyway.
Ah, shucks! Great cover, just one thing missing. I thot certainly it would include something like" "Forward by..." and so I'm still in suspense and want to know WHO, Wil? WHO??
I'm glad for you having JAG published and the writing and all, I'm an aspiring author myself (although merely 15 years old).
I should say it's my first post here, I found WWdN the day before yesterday (for some weird reason I hadn't seen it until now) and today I ordered 'Dancing Barefoot'. I'll see when I buy JAG :)
About the cover, it's great, the photo seems to have some kind of aura channeling out a mixture of all sorts of feelings, or so it seems to me.
Sweet!
Here's the link to the amazon.ca page. It's $25.87 CDN at amazon.ca but amazon.com's $16.87 price is actually $22.88 CDN. If Canadians want to save a whole $3 they can go through the American site.
At amazon.com I got:
Customers who shopped for this item also shopped for these items:
Dancing Barefoot by Wil Wheaton (Author)
PvP Volume 1 by Scott Kurtz (Author)
Books from The Baroque Cycle Series.
The Complete Peanuts by Charles M. Schulz (Author), et al
That cover rawks! How do you do it? Not the talent part. Hell, you were born with that and had the good sense not to waste it. But how do you stay so level headed? You're so good. You have 92/93 good review on Amazon! And You're good! I'd be so fat headed I couldn't get through the door at my favorite pub. They'd have to hand me the Guinness through the door!
I like it though. It looks like you have just set phasers to "screw the haters"
Can't wait to buy it.
P.S. - I saw Dancing Barefoot in the Barnes and Noble on the drag in Austin this week. They had it in the damn Star Wars section. I took it and placed it on an endcap at the front of the store for you
Wil, I just had to reinstall my OS and am stuck with 16 colors till I fix my video. But even in this primitive display the cover looks great. The barest hint of a smile, and the eyes, hmm, I've forgotten if they're brown or blue, but the intensity shows through.
thats fabulous! ok i want it but i'm holding out for will to sell off signed or special ed copies.. first eds or anything.. is there any news on that Wil?
Oooh! I can't wait to get it. Someone above already asked, but I'd like to know, too: Are you going to be selling any signed editions or visiting bookstores to do signings?
Wow!
A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!!!!!!
With you looking so hot on the cover it'll definately boost the sales! I can't wait!
Those gorgeous eyes have great depths which we will hopefully discover in the book! I'll be spreading the word- don't you worry!
Congrats on the book...
But that typography could use a little help. Pick a side, left or right, and try the text lined up. Nothing against whoever did it.
TOOOO COOL...so nice to see great things happening to a great person. Congrats and happy trails next month. Wish I could walk along with ya'll but I'm in Texas.
Dude, that cover is awesome! Simple, to the point, and featuring Uncle Willy where his political notions stand: Left of center. Coolness!
Last time I added a Wil Wheaton book to my Amazon wish list, it magically arrived on my doorstep two weeks later. Here's hoping the Book Fairy will strike again, as I've just added JAG with "Must Have" status.
Wil, I can't think of anyone who deserves this recent success more than you. Roll in it, my friend, and ride the wave while you can stay on the board (to paraphrase, well, you!). We monkeys will try to keep the wave's inertia strong...
Wow! I was so excited when I saw the picture of the cover, I thought maybe you were letting us know the release was soon...NOT 2 months away! Oh well. My copy is preordered. And I guess I will have to be happy with a book cover with a good looking guy on it, instead of his poster hung up over my bed, since I'm grown up and married now,*grin sheepishly*.
I'm so happy to hear from so many people who like it! I was so happy when it arrived in my inbox, I may have done some squealing.
I will definitely have copies of Just A Geek and Dancing Barefoot when I'm in Las Vegas, and Portland and Seattle are absolutely on the list of cities I'll be visiting if / when I tour.
Oh! Come to Sacramento! Please!!!! Ok, I understand that's probably not going to happen, but as long as you come somewhere within driving distance (The Bay Area, maybe?) I'll be there, with as many people as I can fit into my car. Really, we'll be like clowns squeezing in there, without the makeup or weird clown porno.
Hey Wil. Congrats on JAG. Awesome cover. As a graphic artist, I have seen lots of good design, but more bad design (unfortunately). LOVE IT. Great design. Very clean, quite stark, definitely gives the vibe of "unflinchingly honest tales" and vulnerablity. Like others, it's another reminder for me of why I thought you were hot as Wesley, and like a fine wine, you have gotten better with age, not only in your looks, but as a person as well (corny, I know, but applicable). Congrats to Anne for getting such a great guy. Also, congrats on EXCEEDING your fundraising goal. My sister had cancer a few years ago and it was all taken care of with surgery. I can't imagine what seeing someone go through chemo is like, but I know how scary a potentially fatal disease can be. This is also off-subject, but I just got around to listening to the David Lawrence interview and loved it. I applaud your bravery for reading the Aunt Val story out loud. Awesome job. I haven't read Dancing Barefoot yet, but I ordered it when I pre-ordered JAG. Can't wait until July. Pure torture for me and the rest of the monkeys, but I'm sure it will be worth it.
I have to say I am really looking forward to the book and reading it cover to cover. I have enjoyed reading your web log (or as all the crazy kids call it, "blog") for about 1.5 years. I have always thought your greatest strength was your honesty and sincerity that comes through in you writing.
I saw you on TechTV the other day; I finally caught a re-run. I enjoyed the show, but I thought you were trying to hard. I know that even when hosting a show you have to wear a persona, but that person is not the person I read a couple time a week on this site. Just my two cents - nothing like a complete stranger criticizing who you are and what you do ;-)
Hellooooooo Geek. Wow my friend. That is an awesome picture.
*serious moment* What does it feel like to be published? To work so hard on something for so long, wanting people to see or read what you've done and like it and have it happen?
What's it like to chase after a dream for so long...and finally catch it?

F**king Canada ... may be awhile before I can get it, but in the meantime it'll serve as an incentive, something I can reward myself with when I start working again.
Wil,
I love that cover. But in my opinion you are such a hottie (shows my age I'm afraid, and yeah that means I'm a bit older than you) HE HE HE. I think you always look great! I can't wait till the book comes out! I want to be the first here to get it.
Sorry I didn't comment sooner, but I saw the Comments (0) mark of a fresh post and didn't want to be tempted into writing a lame "yay first post" message... hahaha ;)
Congrats, Wil! You should come to Austin, TX and do a signing at Bookpeople. Bruce Sterling had one there last week (granted, he's local, but said that his publisher would've had it as a stop even if he didn't live here) and David Sedaris is next month. I'm sure the O'Reilly people can handle it, but if you need a local contact just let me know. I think you'd get a good turnout.
Thank you, Wil. NOW I remember why I had such a huge crush on you when I was 15. Okay, there's one mystery solved. Now to find the answer to why the hell Jay Tavare's so damn fine...
Wil, I look forward to seeing you when you come to Portland. I got the chance to have you sign a Monolith Press first run of DB and I will be bringing my copy of JAG to make it two for two.
Huh... I'm showing it as 88. I wonder if this is one of those "they change X based on the person" things... maybe ranking "my favorites" stuff higher than they might otherwise be.
Anyway, I'm also showing only one other book in the list that's not OUT YET.
Sweeeeeet!!! What a wonderful way to end a wonderful day. I had a great day! And then I came to check up on the site to see this surprise and it just made me smile even more, despite all the pain from all the smiling that I have already done today. Its GREAT!! Its a wonderful picture and the layout is amazing. It couldnt have been done any better. Wonderful! Just Wonderful!
i've been reading this site, and posting in the comments for about 3 years or so i think, and i have to say, tonight...seeing that photo of the book cover.....
wow..
we're mega, mega proud of you Wil....
let this book stand as a testament to your new life as a writer, and as a the first huge step into your new life..which has never looked more brilliant...
still thought..if you get more gigs as an actor, take em....we still love seeing you on the screen dude..
what more can i say man...
you totally fucking rock!
Congrats, Wil! You've worked hard for this! I got Dancing Barefoot for my wonderful geek hubby for Father's Day last year -- this year I'm getting him JAG. Love the cover!
As someone making tentative steps into the literary world I have been watching and learning from the progress of your book through your blog and audio log entries.. and I have to say that I hope you don't mind me sharing in the good feeling that comes from seeing the fruit of such intelectual and creative effort. I am sure to harass my local bookseller to contact your publisher and send us some copies ( I live in one of the more remote regions of the Australian outback ) to this here little city of ours.
congratulations mate, top effort
Rick the sentence runner
p.s No not everyone here talks like Steve the Croc Hunter umm actually I'm yet to meet any other Australian who speaks like that bloke.
I would like to point out for the record that going through the top 25 items, there are 4 that have not been published yet:
3) "My Life" by Bill Clinton
11) "Song of Susannah" by Stephen King
21) "Ten Big Ones: A Stephanie Plum Novel" by Janet Evanovich
23) "Just a Geek" by Wil Wheaton
Wow. Congrats Wil!
And oddly, they don't have a cover photo up. Somebody should ping O'Reiley about that (on the assumption that Amazon needs their permission to put up the cover photo).
Just a Geek has now passed the Janet Evanovich book, making Wil the third-highest pre-ordered author after Bill Clinton and Stephen King. Whoo-hoo!
WWDN readers: A force to be reckoned with. I wonder if eventually we'll get our own market segment? "Stephen King's new blockbuster novel has fallen to #3 with Young Adult readers, but is still climbing at #2 with WWDN readers." :-)
WOW what an amazing cover.. It just speaks volumes. I still haven't read Dancing Barefoot, but they're both right up there on my list as soon as I get some spare cash!
Now when are you doing a book signing in Edmonton? :)
This just in: Despite misgivings that a foreword by Patrick Stewart would sell more copies, Neil Gaiman has confirmed he will write the introduction to Just a Geek. Tonight, actually.
*squee* really?! too cool! that means i can get him to sign that too when he comes to my friend's store this fall & then just stalk Wil til he signs it. ;-)
Damn Lil Willie, you've got a HELL of a lot of fans. Congratulations on your success thus far. Impressive how your book is doing so well when it hasn't even hit the market yet. I actually look forward to reading it.
I have just been sent back in time to my giddy teen years. I have an inescapable urge to giggle. (Inescapeable?)
Anyway, I like the picture.
Sincere, open, "this is ME".
No marks of identity in the photo but your face-no colours, no uniforms, no urban clothes to give us a clue--just you. Good stuff.
And you've always had those wonderfully expressive eyes.
Any idea why the UK version has 104!! more pages???
Must be the conversion from US to Metric.
Ha! I slay me.
Actually, according to the unbound galley that I've been using for my proofing, it's got 271 pages. I think that O'Reilly gives estimates to places like Amazon so they can do pre-orders, and then Amazon changes the information when the page count is finalized. Maybe Amazon UK was updated more recently than Amazon US, and they added the extra pages because . . . uhm . . . the Queen needs extra pages.
Aaaaaaahhh! This is soooo exciting. It is true, no matter how miniscule a space they take up, front covers and taglines do help me to decide whether to read a book or not. Even though this fact doesn't count for this book (I mean seriously, I would read this book if it had 100 previous owners, had no cover and was covered in coffee and chewing gum...although that would make it have to read).
It even has one of those 'readers who shopped for this item also looked at...' sections. Fact: this is just a LITTLE bit exciting!
I was going to say "best of luck" on the sale of your book but you obviously don't NEED luck. I'm looking forward to reading it along with the thousands of other folks who are by your virtual side.
I shall have to snag a copy to put next to Walter Konig's "Warped Factor" on ye olde shelf. (I totally just misspelled his name, didn't I? I'm not wearing my glasses and I don't want to walk across the room and read the book spine).
So you hittin' up DC for a book signing? Hot as hell here, I'd advise waiting until it cools down and all the tacky tourists bounce out. They had stuff in the Smithsonian Air and Space museum about you last time I checked.
...ok, it was about Star Trek, but you were definetely mentioned. So you should come to DC and sign my copy of your book.
Yeah.
I've been waiting for a few days for my computer to get its act together so I can see that cover. RAWK!!!! it's on my wishlist of things to buy when I get out of China and maybe even have a credit card again!!
I'm with Colleen S! Come East! You could do two cities, two days, one name! Niagara Falls is becoming the Vegas of the East! Not to mention the huge contingent of geeks out here. Come on, with all the snow, what else are people going to do?
Wil - that rocks the Casbah, man. I can't imagine how overwhelmed you must be right now. Congratulations!
And Neil Gaiman wrote the intro...?! That just could not be cooler.
Just curious - have you/O'Reilly talked to Mysterious Galaxy about doing a San Diego signing there? It'd be so much cooler to see you promote it there than at some random chain bookstore (it's also Neil's bookstore of choice in our city, after all...).
OMG, that is so fucking awesome! Just when I get to the point where you're just okay this comes out and I've got a crush on you all over again. I SO can't wait to read JAG, congrats to you, Wil!
The image has been added to the second half of the interview (which is in the copy editing phase right now) and will be added to my review of it (which will be live on June 1).
But of course I'm going to get a copy of my own, oh yes, precious. Now if I could only get you to come out to New York to sign it...
50,000 monkeys at 50,000 typewriters plus one man with writing talent....the formula for a cooly book.....YAY WIL-BUR!!!!!!!
Can't wait fer youse to visit Seattle fer book-signin' and such.....
I guess I've got to be the one to say it...didn't anyone else notice who the lad looks like in this picture? All I'm gonna say is that when they cast "Star Trek: The Early Years" I know who's getting tapped for a certain young Ensign, later captain of the Enterprise 1701 no bloody A, B, C, D, E or F!

Awesome, Wil. You should be proud.

Seriously though, I can not WAIT for this book! It is on the top of my MUST BUY list.
I really dig the cover Wil. It's very stark but bold in its own way, with a feeling of vulnerability and honesty. Very cool.

Nicely done, and congratulations!

Dang...and I was still holding out hope for a monkey at a typewriter...

Man, that cover looks just great.

Heya Wil. Congrats.
I don't know if they did a little p-shopping to the neck, there... it looks like your head may not be attached.
I'll be working on the bobblehead animated Gif for the Fark Photoshop Contest.

Best of luck.

Posted by: Pixie | May 21, 2004 11:54 AM
Nice pic Wil...but you look kinda pissed.

Posted by: Eve | May 21, 2004 04:42 PM
Nice. Very nice.

*mouth drops WIDE open*
Hellooooooo Geek. Wow my friend. That is an awesome picture.
*serious moment* What does it feel like to be published? To work so hard on something for so long, wanting people to see or read what you've done and like it and have it happen?
What's it like to chase after a dream for so long...and finally catch it?
Posted by: Veronica Knight | May 21, 2004 04:58 PM
Wil,
You need a more interesting cover. This one is bland, bland, bland. It looks like the cover on a tell-all book from a male hustler.
You need a cover that respresents what you are: Clever, funny, introspective. This one shows none of that.
And if you don't believe covers sell books, you are fucked.

Excellent! I like the cover...and the book is 41st on the Amazon top sellers list at the moment. Not bad going when it isn't out yet!
In case anyone was wondering, Amazon.co.uk also have it up for pre-order.
Posted by: Christy | May 22, 2004 07:25 AM
Pre-ordered it DIRECTLY (along with a Linksys WRT54GS 802.11g router). I think I'm just a geek myself.
Wil, care to add Kansas City to your list of book tour cities?
Posted by: Jesse C. Slicer | May 22, 2004 07:31 AM

As someone making tentative steps into the literary world I have been watching and learning from the progress of your book through your blog and audio log entries.. and I have to say that I hope you don't mind me sharing in the good feeling that comes from seeing the fruit of such intelectual and creative effort. I am sure to harass my local bookseller to contact your publisher and send us some copies ( I live in one of the more remote regions of the Australian outback ) to this here little city of ours.
congratulations mate, top effort

p.s No not everyone here talks like Steve the Croc Hunter umm actually I'm yet to meet any other Australian who speaks like that bloke.

I'm going to buy it at a book store if I can swing the bucks. Sorry I can't add to the presales numbers.

Just pre-ordered on Amazon UK...
Chris.
Posted by: Chris | May 22, 2004 09:29 AM
11:50 Central Time #23 at Amazon
I would like to point out for the record that going through the top 25 items, there are 4 that have not been published yet:
3) "My Life" by Bill Clinton
11) "Song of Susannah" by Stephen King
21) "Ten Big Ones: A Stephanie Plum Novel" by Janet Evanovich
23) "Just a Geek" by Wil Wheaton
Wow. Congrats Wil!
And oddly, they don't have a cover photo up. Somebody should ping O'Reiley about that (on the assumption that Amazon needs their permission to put up the cover photo).
Posted by: Craig P. Steffen | May 22, 2004 09:57 AM
number 26 on amazon's sales rank....no wait 23,
congrats Wil

13:38 Central time: JAG is number 21 at Amazon.
Posted by: Craig P. Steffen | May 22, 2004 11:44 AM
your sales rank at this moment is 21.
I thought you should know.
Congrats

Hi Wil,
Quick question...
On Amazon.com it says
Paperback: 200 pages
And on Amazon.co.uk it says
Paperback 304 pages (July 2004)
Any idea why the UK version has 104!! more pages???
Chris.
Posted by: Chris | May 23, 2004 03:49 AM
I have just been sent back in time to my giddy teen years. I have an inescapable urge to giggle. (Inescapeable?)
Anyway, I like the picture.
Sincere, open, "this is ME".
No marks of identity in the photo but your face-no colours, no uniforms, no urban clothes to give us a clue--just you. Good stuff.
And you've always had those wonderfully expressive eyes.
Posted by: EllyLoo | May 23, 2004 07:39 AM
Wowo. *F A N T A S T I C* cover.
Such a thing makes me want to buy this book (and I didn't plan on doing so before).

Posted by: wil | May 23, 2004 10:00 AM
Congrats, Wil! Got my pre-order in!:)
Posted by: Andi | May 23, 2004 10:54 AM
Posted by: Annie | May 23, 2004 11:07 AM
Holy sheeps...it's actually coming...it's preordered, now all I have to do is camp out by my mailbox...
Posted by: Winona | May 23, 2004 01:18 PM
I was going to say "best of luck" on the sale of your book but you obviously don't NEED luck. I'm looking forward to reading it along with the thousands of other folks who are by your virtual side.

you're a babe, but come on! that photo out of all the photos of you in the world??
love the book dood, proud as punch x
Posted by: becks | May 23, 2004 04:22 PM
wooh, cool!
Yeah.
Posted by: Annalee | May 23, 2004 05:01 PM
Somewhere in the last few blog entries, you went *squee* over the person who was writing the introduction to the book, but didn't name names.
The person in question mentioned that he really ought to be finishing that up soon on his own blog.
It just rocks so damn much when two of my favorite writers on the planet get together.
Congrats on the book. I'll be pre-ordering as soon as I find my credit card...
Posted by: Shannon S | May 23, 2004 07:05 PM
I've been waiting for a few days for my computer to get its act together so I can see that cover. RAWK!!!! it's on my wishlist of things to buy when I get out of China and maybe even have a credit card again!!

I'm with Colleen S! Come East! You could do two cities, two days, one name! Niagara Falls is becoming the Vegas of the East! Not to mention the huge contingent of geeks out here. Come on, with all the snow, what else are people going to do?
Wow. I need to go lie down...

Posted by: Ness | May 24, 2004 06:41 AM
Wil - that rocks the Casbah, man. I can't imagine how overwhelmed you must be right now. Congratulations!
And Neil Gaiman wrote the intro...?! That just could not be cooler.
Just curious - have you/O'Reilly talked to Mysterious Galaxy about doing a San Diego signing there? It'd be so much cooler to see you promote it there than at some random chain bookstore (it's also Neil's bookstore of choice in our city, after all...).
Posted by: Tracy | May 24, 2004 10:07 AM
OMG, that is so fucking awesome! Just when I get to the point where you're just okay this comes out and I've got a crush on you all over again. I SO can't wait to read JAG, congrats to you, Wil!

Let the flames begin!
