Nolan walked over to my desk and tapped me on the shoulder. I turned around in my chair and looked into his cheshire grin.

"What are you doing?" I said.

"Oh . . . I just saw something I thought you may be interested in." I noticed that he had one hand behind his back.

"It wouldn't be related to what you have behind your back, would it?"

His grin got bigger, and he revealed People magazine. Jennifer Aniston was on the cover -- apparently she's one of the 50 most beautiful people in the world.

"I don't want to burst his bubble and tell him that I'm not all that excited about her," I thought, "But I don't want to lie to him, either. Crap! It's a Parenting Challenge. What do I do?"

"Nolan, I --"

He opened the magzine and revealed a two-page ad for the new Ford GT. It was my favorite car at the entire LA Auto Show when we went a few months ago. He gingerly set it down on my desk.

"I think I'll leave you two alone," he said, and patted my knee before he left.

He managed to contain his giggles until he was just outside the door.

Comments

It's sad when you reach the age that cars are more interesting than beautiful, unattainable women. But it's nice that Nolan knows you so well . . .

Heh. "The girl or the car?"

It has new meaning now. :)

Hee hee! A grin and a pat on the knee! The relationship you have with him is just adorable!

Makes me almost want to be a dad some day..

lol, i thought only my kids did things like that :)
great site

Ooooooooooooooooh a family moment. So are you really related to Jennifer Aniston. If so i think we are related.

*raises eyebrows* Not interested in Jennifer Aniston. Isn't that a sin or something? That's like saying you don't think Beyonce's tush is the greatest thing since toilet paper.

I like the new Ford GT too by the way.

P.S. Your sons are so cute.

I didn't think anyone but my s/o and I had ever listened to Soul Coughing.

I love cute kid anecdotes. :)

Kids are the greatest thing in all the world.
In my own opinion...things are best served from our kids. I love that my kids know me so well.
You have good boys Wil, you are very lucky to have them, and they you.

My god that kid is clever!
And I don't think Jennifer Aniston is that hot, either.

*snort*

Very cool, Wil...

We seem to agree on quite a few things...

Aniston: 0 Ford GT: 1

Woohoo!!! *8D

What did that have to do with Soul Coughing?

:D That's Awesome! I'd give Nolan a high-five if I were there, what an awesome kid!

*lol* That's awesome. You can just picture it perfectly. I was babysitting recently when I said "Oh, it's almost 6:30" and the little boy turned in a panic & asked "Is it 6 - 7 central??" Seriously. Kids rule.

Soul Coughing was one of the best bands to come out of 90's and New York. Ruby Vroom is the name of one of their albums. For any Soul Coughing fans Mike Doughty is doing solo stuff . Check out mikedoughty.com if you are interested.

I think I just revealed what a true music geek I am. Whoops

Resistance is futile. He owns you now.

Funny!

That's a cool kid you've got there, Wil.

Wil:
Gotcha! LOL!!! Are you loosing your touch? You were outsmarted by a youngster!

Scott

It's things like that that redeem my faith in children.

That totally was my first laugh in the mornin. That kid rocks.

What is it with men and cars...???!

Parenting is the greatest gift we can receive and it never stops tripping you up.
My 7 year old daughter has started calling me a geek....I wonder where she got that from....but I digress.
Happy Mother's Day to Anne

LOL, that is so funny... reminds me of something similar my boyfriend did the other day. enter 1 copy of Arenea magazine, One oiled up scantily clad woman on one page, and a picture of the new version of my car (hot hatch), he was drooling over the car and said that the woman didn't deserve to press her body against the car, was sooo funny.

hey wil,
that was soo cool of Nolan! isn't it great to have someone who knows you that well!? i think so! he's a cheeky monkey isn't he?!?! tee hee

well, have fun guys...
take care
Rach
ps. happy mother's day Anne!

bwahahahahaha! Your influence on him is showing Wil. :)

ROFL! Thanks for the laugh, Wil -- that is *too* cute! :)

Luckily I got to see Soul Coughing before they bided adieu to each other. Now if they would stop their internal bickering, they could pop out a live album. El Oso was their best. Oh, and great story too.

Is your entire family screwed up, or afflicted with the humor bug, or what? Between you, Anne, and now Nolan, I don't whether to laugh or fear for the collective sanity of your household!

Just kidding. That was priceless.

Sorry dude, but Nolan's learned to play you. :-)

And yes, that GT is totally awesome. Way better than Jennifer Aniston.

Dang, I thought maybe Jennifer Aniston was wearing a WWdN tee shirt or something. A car? Feh!

Well that just brightened my day up. Nolan is so cute!!!

Happy Mothers Day to all mothers, past, present and future.

Do you guys have a fathers day? In the UK we have it sometime is June, I was wondering if any other countries celebrate fathers as well.

I thought I was the only one who listened to Soul Coughing :) I guess "Is Chicago, Is Not Chicago" is permanently banned from all radio stations now, but I still think it's a great song.

If you don't have it, Ruby Vroom is available in iTunes Music Store.

that is awesome.

Bwahahahahaha

*score 10 points to Nolan*

That? Is adorable.

And Soul Coughing rocks.

Seems to me like your sense of humor has rubbed off on others in your household... :-)

Now that was cute. Kids, what they do for their parents and yes Wil you might be a step-father,but you're still a dad. I think those are the luckiest kids in the world to have you as their (step) DAD!
MOrgan

Soul Coughing shout-out and a touching guy moment. Hee! My day is made.

Here's a question: Who would make the cut on "Wil Wheaton's Ten Hottest Ladies of All Time" list? And you can't say Anne cause that's too easy.

Dude...pwnz0red by your own son. You must be so proud. =)

That remark was just absolutely perfect. Reminds me of my friends and I referring to the Museum Replicas catalog as "porn". =)

Great story Wil! My best friend from high school just wants a boat. Men are weird.

Now THAT'S funny.

But it's Jennifer Aniston. . . Eh, what am I saying? My husband is the same way.
Very cute story. Kids can be so cool sometimes.

By the way, how is your cat? I hope he's doing okay. My parents' cat went through that a few years back (IV's and all). At least she got to go on vacation to Maine with us. We found a vet up there who would give her fluids. She actually had a grand time until about a week before she passed away.

Vey cute story....the sort of thing that goes into the store of family lore...

Sounds like the beginnings of a very wicked sense of humor...be afwaid, be vewy afwaid...

Reminds me of the spouse -- we were watching a porn film called "Lust on the Orient Express", and he was more interested in the train. Ah, the joys of being married to a railfan... sigh

Picked up Cory Doctorow's Essential Blogging this weekend; first chapter he refers to various blogs, and calls you a "geek hero". Gave me a bit of a chuckle. :)

Happy belated Mommy's Day to Anne!

Smart kid - he knows that the car will never break his heart. His bank, maybe. Wait til he gets his "electronics" bug, and decides to see how funny it is to wire a radio transformer to the doorknob.

Watch out -- that kid's gonna steal your stand-up career!

wow, ya, my 11 year-old cousin and i were watching TV one day and Family Guy comes on, so i get all excited. we're watching the credits and he says, "Is this show age appropriate?"

ah the kids of today... age appropriate??!!
um, no. it's not. and the channel was changed. that's ok, we watched Teen Titans instead.

That is just too funny! My brother does that sometimes.

Happy belated Mother's Day to Anne.

I have Erin K beat on the music geek title, although maybe he/she's just being modest. The Soul Coughing album is named after Ruby Froom, who's Mitchell Froom (record producer to the stars) and Suzanne Vega's child. I knew this story, but I don't know that I've ever heard Soul Coughing's music. This is sad, I need help. :)

Check out the 60 sec. ad...

Wait until it fully loads...

Put on headphones or surround sound...

AWESOME CAR!

So, Wil, you going up to Pebble Beach to bid on the first sale to the public? GT #10!

Y'know, Wil, I sense a TV comeback. Just turn your blog into a sitcom ;-)
But make sure Nolan doesn't get all the punchlines!

i think NOLAN would really like for you to get that car...i know i always wanted my dad to get a cool car...we'd get the brochures in the mail and i'd be rattling off the cool things about each car...the automobile...a bridge to the heavier conversations you'll have with him in the future.

hhhmmm - You could take out a second mortgage on the house - I'm sure Anne wouldn't mind :)

I might not have anyone beat in the music geek department, but I have practically everyone beat in the Soul Coughing geek department (and I mean geek - I've used moonsammy as an online nick for at least 6 years). Saw them live 4 times plus M Doughty solo 4 times (and I don't live in NY), have at least 8 live shows in mp3 format, and every rarity / b side that has been available online in any format that I'm aware of (though Mat at SCUG has a few song clips available that I've never found the full versions for). I even went back and mp3'd a tape I had with M Doughty doing some readings from his poetry book Slanky live on Rev105 back in '94 or so. I'm perfectly happy to share anything that isn't commercially available, some of their non-album stuff *really* deserved wider dissemination (email me - mikeUNDERSCOREpaquetteATyahooDOTcom).

I actually started reading this blog because a while back Wil had the El Oso album cover under "Listen" on the side of the page :)

I think after he patted you on the knee and said "i think i'll leave you two alone" one can imagine a wave of embarrassment and intense humour swept over you.

Two thumbs for Nolan :)

Thanks for the earlier link to the 60 second ad. Even in the little pop-up window it makes my heart beat faster. It looks like the track might be Laguna Seca...can anyone confirm or deny that?

Ford GT > Jennifer Aniston

This is true any day of the week.

\m/ ROCK!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Nice one Nolan!!!! \m/

PS How's Bear?

You've got one clever little kid there, Wil. Clearly, you've been rubbing off on him.

Hello old man! I'm posting on your website for the first time and I have a itch that needs scratching. What is the symbolism of the starship Enterprise to you? I'm doing a talk about Star trek in my art school Cal Arts since I like it quite alot and have decided to critique it in my art school. I'm starting off with TOS and the sym, bolism adn iconographic meaning of Enterprise, the Crew and the Klingons.

Well, mainly I just want to poke and prod at the brains of these uberserious art kids whou think that Vito Acconci is a genius. (i beg to differ)
So, symbolism of the enterpris. What the hell does she represent and mean? Since pop culutre has practically thrust the show to an incredible new plateau that no body at the time though possible. Now what do we have, millions of fans, billions of dollars in merchandise and the guy from Scott Bakula from Quantum Leap!

so, I'd like to hear your opinion.

Simon st. Johns
CalArts

LOL! I almost thought that it was a blog on Soul Coughing. That Nolan is a card. You should definitely keep him.

What is it about the car, they ask?
Well, I don't think Jennifer's speedometer goes near 200, nor does she lay rubber (wait! Stop those nasty jokes!) in the parking lot.

My memories of the original Ford GT are from HO-scale slot cars... and I had a 40-something Lincoln that blew the doors off every GT because it wss so heavy it couldn'tleave the track.

Wil,

The Ford GT is a pretty smooth car. I just got done looking at the official site. Not bad at all. Im an import fan however. Would take a Nissan Skyline GT-R Vspec over just about any car there is. Notice I said "just about". I like women just as much as any guy (even though im a chick) But I would rather look at the cars they are often perched upon. Cars a big thing with me and I think most of the time I would take the car rather than the chick. Heh, even if it was a guy perched on the hood I would still take the car. Lolz =)~. Im not biased, I like all kinds of cars, Im just more fond of imports when it comes to super tuned or radically modified cars. But my one and only true love will always be the Hummer, and the new H1 is bad ass. The H2 kind of sucks though =/. Whatever blows your hair back I suppose. =)

HAVE A GOOD ONE!!

~*~Lotus~*~

Very very cute! Kind of adorable actually. What a funny kid!

That is so cute!! Smart kid. ;)

Great story...and there you go. The perfect subject for your third book - a collection of stories about stepparenting!

Oh, Jeez, Wil. You always manage to crack me up. I love you.

Wil,
That kid is funny.

FG

GOLF GT? It's a little "futurist" no? To my husband like it sure

Looks like your plan worked, Wil. He's built his relationship with you on his terms, and it looks like it's a damn fine one at that. Good job!

Pass it on:
Nolan, Thanks for the giggle!!!
~margarita

To the guy who asked "What does Soul Coughing have to do with it?"

I answer "nothing. except the totally cool album title that fit the column"

I presume the GT ad featured a *red* car?

I guess this makes me a patronizing language/ symbolism/ music geek?

Dear geek hero:

My comments:

Jennifer Aniston: Well-Groomed, I'll give her that.

Cars: meh. We need to find alternative means of travel and fuel use.

That's all.

This is a great post. The first thing that comes to mind when people drool and ogle women is, my wife is hotter than that! But then she pays me to say that.....

god, i love that kid. :) he's me, only well... he's a boy.

i love reading your stories about parenthood.
it gives me hope that anyone can do it, no matter the child, no matter the parent.

No Wil. Please! I implore you. Don't do it. Don't break the 11th commandment: Thou Shalt Not Love Ford nor Any of Their Cars.

Hee, Go Nolan, Hee hee.

Thanks a lot, Wil. All I have been doing the last two days is obsessing over that damn car. Man it is hot - and the commercial on the Ford site is pretty friggin cool as well. Now if I can just get a 2nd mortgage to cover the $153k....

more often than not, you make me laugh out loud. that's so funny. and yes, you have a great relationship with your kids, and I'm glad they have finally made it to that status, than where they were just a few years ago... or maybe it's just where you were with them.. who knows.
