dancing in the deepest oceans
Anne walked into my office, and proudly pointed to the T-shirt she was wearing. It said "I [heart] my geek."
"Is that true?" I said, "Do you really love your geek?"
"I do when he gets off the computer so we can go take care of our errands." She said.
I stood up, and kissed her nose. "Okay," I said, "I just have to change my shirt and we can go."
"What's wrong with the shirt you have on right now?" She said.
"Look at it," I said.
"There are only ten types of people in the world: those who understand binary, and those who don't."
"Right." I said, "I need to change this."
"Why?" She said.
"Because it's like you're wearing a shirt that says 'I'm with stupid,' and if I wear this shirt . . ."
"Oh. You're him." she said.
I laughed, and walked into our bedroom. I returned wearing my Vandals T-shirt.
"Now everyone will wonder who your geek is!" I said.
She looked at me for a moment and replied, "Uhm. Probably not. But I still love you."
I held her hand the entire time we were out.
After we got home, I went for a run through my neighborhood. The sun was beginning to set, and a light breeze shook a few leaves from the trees over my head.
"Mother Nature thinks it's October," I thought, "I like that."
I reached the corner, and turned down a new street. A car pulled up next to me and honked.
"Well, hello there, Mister Wheaton," said the driver, one of my very friendly neighbors, "How are you?"
"I'm well," I said.
"And how is your beautiful wife?"
I smiled and said, "She's beautiful!"
Because she is.
When I got home, I walked into the dining room. Anne sat at the table, and giggled as she read The Onion.
"Do you know how much I love you?" I said.
She looked up at me, smiled, and held up two fingers.
I shook my head.
She held up four fingers.
I shook my head.
She held up ten fingers.
I shook my head, and held my arms out at my sides, palms open. "This much," I said.
"That's an awful lot," she said.
"Yeah, it sure is."

That's so cool!
I swear I'm not making this up: when I came home from work yesterday, my wife gave me that shirt as a present. I'd seen it years ago in someone's .sig, and told everyone I could find.
Awesome!
[Side note: Thought about wearing that one to interview a prospective cantidate for our group today. I don't know that his english is going to be up for that one, so I opted for the T-shirt that came with the Robotech game for PlayStation 2 instead.]

My wife owns an 'I Love My Geek' shirt, I never thought about what I'm wearing when she has it on. Normally it's a Megatokyo, Real Life Comics or MC Frontalot.
No wonder my freinds think I'm a bit sad :)

Life is good in geekville when our wives understand us. I myself have been blessed with a wife who some would say is, herself, a geek. She loves RPG video games. She wants to go out and get an X Box now just because of Fable! Can't say I blame her. It looks fantastic. I need to get her one of those I (heart) My Geek shirts, though.

I so, so needed to read something like this, this morning.
On our walk around the neighborhood last night, through the cooling almost autumn air, my sweetie told me to quit reading news sites for awhile because I was becoming filled with anxiety.
So take a break and check out favorite web sites that make you feel like there is good in the world, he said So I just did, and now I do.
Life is really so simple. All each of us really need is someone we can love and trust.
Thanks, Wil.

I've always had partners who loved their geek. It is a good thing. There's a goofiness in such a relationship (e.g. "Now everyone will wonder who your geek is!" "Uhm. Probably not. ...") that I absolutely love. Other people sometimes don't understand it (I had a boss who felt I was whipped or that I shouldn't be goofy or something once. I don't think he ever clued in that there's strength in being goofy. Or whatever.), but who cares?

My boyfriend (a total Trekkie and geek) gave me that t-shirt over Labor Day weekend. I laughed out loud, and thought (and still think) it was the best present I've ever received. I'm looking forward to wearing it in concert with one of his Transformer or code shirts.
Today he pointed me in this direction. I am so happy for you and Anne, Wil. There are way too many girls out there who have yet to figure out that geeks are the best kind of significant others, and that their geekiness is what makes them so valuable.

I got my wife one of those shirts. She got me the GEEKISSEXY (KISS in red) for Valentine's Day. I rarely wear mine, but she wore hers. Now that it doesn't fit her anymore, she cut hers up and put it on a jacket and gets asked about it all the time.
Kinda cute to hear stories about random people asking "So who's your geek?"
Posted by: Jason | September 21, 2004 09:26 AM
*sniff* That's beautiful.
And strange, but true, my son wore that shirt the other day (he's 23), and much to his shock, I actually knew how to read it correctly.

Way to go Ann. As a geek wife who proudly wears her "I (heart) My Geek" t-shirt, I've got to say that is a great story. My husband is almost always wearing a linux oriented tshirt, so it is obvious that's he's my geek. We combined a romantic weekend at a B&B with WizardWorld Texas last year for a truly geeky and sappy experience. Geek wives rule!
Posted by: Carrie | September 21, 2004 10:39 AM
I didn't realize there were so many of us lucky geeks out there who buy these shirts for our significant others! Either that or the world has gotten that much smaller...
Ingrid, the shirts are for sale at www.thinkgeek.com (come on, Wil's got a sponsored link on this page!)
Posted by: jack | September 21, 2004 10:41 AM
Wil, I have a "10 kinds of people" shirt, too (from thinkgeek.com). I, however, love wearing it in public - I enjoy watching the reaction on people's faces when they read it and try to figure out its meaning. Most people's eyes just glaze over when I try to explain it to them.
My wife likes it, too, now that I've explained it to her. It's fun being a geek. ;-)

Will, i realy hope you know how LUCKY you are (just as i am after 13 years off mairiage and still in love). Darn, i know i am typing things the wrong way. Grammar is (i think) improving, but it still sucks, don't it ?.

Love the story Wil, but I have to make one Uber Geek correction... It should be "there are 10 kinds of people" otherwise the joke doesn't quite work (ten being 1010 in binary, 10 being two). Sorry, just the Computer Engineer in me coming out. I'll go put him back in the closet now.

Greetings,
Oh... *sniff*
The first thing I did, outside of wiping a tear away, was to tell my fiance (online, of course) to go here, and see if anything was...familiar. :)
It's a lovely, loving, sweet, and silly story. Just the way it should be.
My fiance and I always wonder if we're weird (almost certainly true, but...), being pretty regularly relaxed with each other, and saccharine, sappy, and silly. Nearly everyone else we know treats relationships like business deals, or something, so serious, so much tension... The voluntary peek into another the happiness of another geek helps mitigate that a lot.
Thank you for sharing that!

Hehehe. This sounds SO MUCH like me and my wife, right down to the t-shirts (I (heart) my geek) and the "10 types". Even the numbers for love (our arbitrary standard is seven - for no good reason - or "bigger than a breadbox").
She was laughing at me just last night when I was telling her about how cool it was that I could add a hires map to Celestia (http://www.shatters.net/celestia/) of Kennedy Space Center. She said to me, "You're such a nerd", at which point I went into an extended rant about the difference between geeks and nerds. That just made her laugh harder.

I am a little scared - I automatically translated the statement into binary (read "ten" and translated it into "10" and thence to binary two.
Another idea - you have all these geek couples sighing and us geek singles envying. How 'bout a geek match up thing?

Posted by: Corey Haines | September 21, 2004 05:02 PM
OMG, my DH has that same shirt. :-) I don't have any shirts that say "I love my geek" though.
Speaking of t-shirts, my DH will only wear t-shirts. Did you know that t-shirts aren't just t-shirts? He has good t-shirts, old t-shirts, geek t-shirts, vacation t-shirts, logo t-shirts, etc. I'd say that we spend more than our fair share of our hard earned money at thinkgeek.com.
In November 1995, we went to Comdex in Las Vegas. Those were the days when the net was new...anyway, we acted like idiots just to get free t-shirts from different vendors. He's still wearing some of them! Back then, we were in college so it was a cheap way to replenish your wardrobe.
Do you really own all that cool stuff on the back of your JAG book, or did you just borrow it for the photo shoot? I don't think you should change your binary tee when you go out anymore -- why not show the world how smart you really are? :-)
Later,
L.

Very Sweet!
It kinda reminds me of something that happened yesterday. I have a deli and my teenage son usually comes in at lunch so he doesn't have to eat the school food. (We have an open campus at the High Schools here.)When he was about to leave to go back to school, he had a sad look on his face. I said, "What's up?" He said, "You haven't given me a hug in two days!!" I said, "I think you're wrong, but just in case, I'll just have to give you an extra big one".
He is 16 and isn't afraid to let his friends know that he loves his Papa.

Hey Wil we can't leave messages and congratulate you for being CAPTAIN Crusher because you've not put a comments link on the last entry!
Congrats Anyway.
Good cause and glad to see you supporting it. Some people thought you should've gotten your own ship on NG may be one day you will in one of the movies.
Have a great day!
Just love your website.

Um, okay, yeah. This entry just made me hate being single even more than I already do. But I forgive you, Wil. The world needs more sweet guys like you, and certainly more sweet guys who aren't afraid to say, "I love you," to their significant other.

Wil, you *do* have the Wally Pleasant album "Songs About Stuff", right? Y'all's theme song is on there - track #7, if it weren't obvious. ;)

I can't believe someone made reference to a Wally Pleasant song!!! Now THAT'S obscure!! Kilbia, you rule!
Incidentally, my wife and I are such geeks, we included a quote from Wally's song "First Love" in our wedding program!! (OK, we had other songs in there too.)

Thanks for sharing this story. My email signature has the 10 kinds of people line which I really like. I enjoy the personal touch you give your website and enjoy reading about the closeness you and your wife share. I too am a geek, no doubt. I'm one of those people on your website daily that don't normally post. This is my first ! Alan
