fossilize apostle and I comb it with a rake
It sounds like lots of people have been tuning into the stream of my performance from Gnomedex, and enjoying it. That rules!
There was a suggestion in the comments from the last post that I should do each chapter live, and put the whole thing together into a collection of "live" performances. My friend Jim actually suggested something like that to me about a year ago, and I've been planning to do it with Dancing Barefoot. The plan is to set up four performances down at the ACME theatre (two a night for two nights) and then cut together the best stuff. The results of that recording will be "Dancing Barefoot -- Live" or something spiffy like that.
I know I've mentioned the Just A Geek audiobook before, but it's almost finished! David Lawrence has been helping me produce it, and we're about 50% completed. I'm working on it some more tonight, right after I'm on The David Lawrence Show. (David and I are going to talk a lot of politics and stuff, which should be interesting because we agree on most things, but sharply differ on others.)
I just started Sean Astin's book, and even though I'm only 18 pages into it, I am having a hard time putting it down. Wouldn't it be cool if Sean and I did some book signings and things together? When I finish his book, I'm going to call him and suggest it.

Hey, what's Sean's book about?
Posted by: Don Genova | October 13, 2004 5:12 PM
It's mostly about LOTR, but so far he's talking about how he got there. It's weird to read these stories that I remember experiencing second-hand, filled with people who I either knew, or knew of.
Cool, but weird.
Posted by: wil | October 13, 2004 5:14 PM
Since you asked: Yes, yes that would be cool.
Posted by: phriedom | October 13, 2004 5:15 PM
i would queue up for that!

BTW: Tried to watch the video too, but having trouble getting that feed to work.
Guess you're just going to have to release a videobook!

I just listened to your WHOLE reading at Gnomedex (I am at home with a cold today). I really don't know what Gnomedex is, and maybe this is why I am so confused... Why weren't they laughing more? I was laughing, and I don't think it's just the cough syrup talking.

Judging by the comments on Amazon I think you're better off doing your own book signings.
Posted by: Anthony | October 13, 2004 6:07 PM
Hey, that's a novel idea...
Get it?
Novel.
HAR!

Sean and Wil tag-team book signing? grrrr. All the cool stuff happens right when I leave the country!
Posted by: Wendy | October 13, 2004 6:29 PM
Well, he's not nearly the author you are but I'd take a road trip for a book signing...and I think it's great that you're finally going to call him!

Ah, my "desert island" album.
Keep up the good fight, man.

Sean's book was very interesting read. I finished it in about two days.
I definitely agree, you should look into doing some book events with him. I had a few friends at his first signing tonight in NYC, and they said it went very well.
And too bad you didn't make it about 12 more pages before you took your break. Because at that point, your name gets a mention. :)
Posted by: lani | October 13, 2004 7:03 PM
So you're gonna make me actually use the internet and search around for Sean's book myself? C'mon man, that's what the linkylinky thing is for (plus, you could get the Amazon Associates commission for the sale if I buy it!) ;)
Posted by: Jared | October 13, 2004 7:05 PM
Yes, you should fish that number of his out of that jacket it's stuffed in and call him. Then, at the book tours, you can have your action figures fight. I do believe a phaser can take a hobbit sword anyday...
You know, since now the both of you are writing, I want "Toy Soldiers: Behind the Scenes". Hm... maybe, maybe not... You could then write the chapter Wesley-haters wanted for years, "And then they shot my character..." (So sad that I refused to finish the movie the first time I watched it.)
The live readings are just fantastic!
cheers!
Posted by: angie k | October 13, 2004 7:17 PM
That would be very cool.
I just saw Toy Soldiers on TV a few days ago and was reminded of one of your co-stars, Shawn Phelan, who died in a car accident.
Posted by: Mike C | October 13, 2004 7:27 PM
Yeah, Wil... I'm interested in knowing whether you ever DID actually pull the number out of the jacket pocket before beginning his book.
Have you heard from him since you published your books? You wrote some extremely kind things about him, and I was curious if Sean had any reaction to making a cameo in your writings.
Posted by: Brad Kimberly | October 13, 2004 7:45 PM
Thats a great idea. I didn't know Sean had a book out.. I guess he will have you to thank for a few referral sales. ;)
Posted by: Neph | October 13, 2004 7:47 PM
If you and Sean do end up arranging a joint signing tour, I'll be the happiest reader alive.
Posted by: Adrienne | October 13, 2004 8:04 PM
Sean spelt Wil with two L's in his book. hehe.
Posted by: Fleur | October 13, 2004 8:11 PM
Well, geez Wil, put a link to Amazon for Sean's book up and we'll contribute to the maintenance of your excellent site...

I think it would be very odd reading an autobiography of sorts by someone I knew directly or closely indirectly. I guess it's like seeing your friends on screen acting...

How about "Wil Wheaton comes alive"!
Posted by: Craig | October 13, 2004 8:24 PM
See, now I have to go and read Sean's book. Dagnabit! :) From the looks of the reviews on Amazon, Sean seems to be having the trouble with some readers assuming he'd only talk about LOTR. But, I guess you get that kinda trouble too, Wil.

I hope this isn't the first time you've called Sean since we nagged you about it before. Please say you actually called him this time.
Thanks for telling us about Sean's book. I hadn't heard he had one out. And yes, you need a link to his book. Do you only get credit for your books, or can you get a little something if we buy anything from Amazon if we clicked thru your site?
Posted by: watcher652 | October 13, 2004 10:12 PM
How about "Dancing Barefoot... And Naked"? Live, raw DB. Just a thought.
Just got done listening to the Gnomedex presentation. Not your best work? Come ON! "Sorry, I was watching the debates." Comedy GOLD! Great job, even the little hiccups. How do you think Conan O'Brian got his career? Making mistakes into part of the act. Can't wait to get the AudioBook.

you're such a geek, wil! :D
but isn't it great to know how we still can surprise ourselves...
Posted by: jay | October 14, 2004 12:02 AM
I'll tell you all about "Toy Soldiers" behind the scenes. The wall they built to join two existing buildings to create a quad cost over a million dollars to build. At any given time there were at least two helicopters hovering over our trailers. The Days Inn is a great place to stay... but the only fun was crossing the street (at risk of life and limb) and going to K-mart/Krogers to shop and fool around with merchandise. We really didn't notice it turn into "a bunch of guys stuffed in a dorm room in their underwear" until it was too late. (It was hot!) Also, and I think Sean and Wil will agree, those were fought-after roles for all of us, and we appreciated being there with each other. Lou and Denholm, R. Lee and Dan were all great hero's, role models and friends. And that's all I have to say about that.
P.S. Hey Wil, where does the pool furniture belong?

~~~~~Wil, if you did a booksigning with Sean, and I got to go... Wow, what a fun day that would be!! :) I think it's a fabulous idea, and I really hope you call him. For those of you who might want to see Sean this weekend, he's going to be at the Boston Museum of Science. There's a LoTR exhibit there that ends on Oct. 24. This weekend, Sean will be doing a booksigning (the store there has plenty of copies of his book). My hubby and I were there this past weekend- I would have liked to have gone when Sean was there, but my band is opening up for Rick Springfield that night!! :) So, Wil, now you have to have a co-booksigning with Sean, just so I can meet you both. :) Call him RIGHT NOW, and let us know what he says.
Oh, saw you on E! last night. They did a special about Child Stars of the 80's. Great interview! Made me laugh!
I think a dual book signing is a great idea. I believe he's doing the LA scene in early November. I'm volunteering all day at the Boston Museum of Science book signing this weekend (I'd arrive early if you're coming!). Wonder if I can work that idea into conversation. Perhaps if I ask him what the last book he read was, 'cause if he asks me it's Just a Geek! :)
Posted by: iyyak | October 14, 2004 5:45 AM
I would travel serious miles at great personal expense to have the opportunity to have the both of you sign your books for me. Did I mention serious miles - Cleveland, Ohio serious. Keep us posted. (I already have the picture you donated to My Cat Ranch(Thank you very much.) But I really need your autograph on my copy of Dancing Barefoot and Just a Geek to round out my collection !)
Hey Wil,
I still think you've got one of the most lovely and distinct voices in the world and love to listen to it. Really enjoying listening to part one and two.
You and Sean Astin had better do tours in Canada. You've got thousands of fans up here. I didn't know he had a book out. I'll have to read it too.
Thanks for sharing yourself with everyone. We sure appreciate your honesty about your life. You certainly have changed for the better and that's truly amazing to me.
Lots of Love
Y'know, you and Sean should sit down and put together a flick. He's got the directorial chops and seems to be a decent screenwriter; you're an author and general tech geek; you're both kickass actors.
Anywho:
Rock, rock on, Cheat Commando Wil Wheaton. (Dude, you should totally drop a line to the Bros. Chaps and ask to be the equivalent of Sergeant Slaughter in GI Joe.)
Keith: In the pool, of course.
Most people don't know this, but when we made the movie, I spent more time hanging out with Keith than anyone else. I was just 18, and trying on my Big Boy pants for the first time in my life, and Keith was right there for all the cool stuff . . . and most of the lame stuff, too.
Remember Dead Milkmen? The Naming of Yogurt? The Speeding Ticket on the way to DC? Slot cars?
We had some really good times behind the scenes, but we also took the acting aspect of it very seriously.
Hey, we should get together with a minidisc recorder, and have a conversation about Toy Soldiers. That would be cool.
Hi Wil, Keith...
Sean is in the UK for an HOUR!!!!! signing in London on the 29th of Nov... Knowing Sean he will stay till he has seen everyone and then miss his Flight.
(presuming he is flying back to LA or NZ to finish filming Hercules)
I knew Sean was bring the book out and pre ordered it... but then i am a huge fan of both Wil and Sean.. i love the books..
Its not a surprise that you, Two of the most talented Men in the world are my biggest heros!
You know.. if you and Sean decide to do a joint thing... this is my wish..
plenty of time to get a loan to be able to play for the flight and Keith to join you, to get a place with a stage area so that you guys can have a talk... just fool about and generally talk about books and toy soldiers!
Please give plenty of time.. i dont want to have to sell everything i own to come see you guys! i'm already thinking of camping out on a London street to See Sean when there is no guarantee.. and basically i could be mugged or stabbed! Sorry this was a bit of a Brain Fart... but i get too hyper when you guys talk about eachother... if i had the chance to find my tongue when i met sean i would have asked him to tell me about you guys when you were filming my favourite movie! TS!!
okay better shut up now!! Call Sean.. did you not see him at the last con... BOTH of you were at?
DAMN...
Hugs
So, uhh, Keith?
By "hot" did you mean the temperature? Please, please have meant the temperature...
heh
Wil, remember what I said about KC blogging?
Posted by: Russ | October 14, 2004 10:46 AM
Hey Wil,
I totally forgot all about the Dead Milkmen, I think I tossed that t-shirt I bought. One other thing I forgot about was the bad guys taking us one by one and trying to scare the sh*t out of us. I just played along and they quit. And yes, I meant hot temperature wise. So many cool memories on that film. I have to admit, of the three times we've worked together, this was the most time we spent on one project. And it was cool as hell to hang out with a fellow geek. As cool as I tried to be in the 90's, I was never hip. Trust me. I was always looking for some edge that didn't exist in me up until now. I'm super edgy. Wil, you have always been an independent thinker. You never caved to the evil peer pressure I exerted, and I respect that. Remember our band?!?!?!?!? Definitely a cool time. I am still just as jealous as Sean was with "Stand by Me". I never did a movie that was that well written, shot, or acted. It's still one of my favorite movies, and I'll watch it anytime. Hey Wil, sorry if I seem like I'm trolling your site, but I love to read it, and I check it out every day. It's always a big dissapointment when you don't have a new post. And since we never get a chance to see each other except on the set or auditions, I'ts very cool to be able to catch up on what's going on with you and yours. Mojo to the whole bunch.
Your number one fan...
Hey keith.. its pretty normal for people who have known someone for years to check out each others blogs etc...
I would hardly call your reading and posting trolling. ;)
I expect most of my friends to care enough to read my blog..otherwise I come after them with a sharpened spork.
Soul Coughing! Yeah! "When you were languishing in rooms I built to file you iiiiiiiiiin-a..."
Keith - Your grandfather was the shizzle! Has anyone ever asked you to do the whole lightbulb bit?
Wil - Finally! Calling Sean! Rock! I'm willing to bet six rounds of Guinness that, not only will the call go well, but it will lead to you and Sean (and hey, throw Keith in there as well) working together on independant projects! Whatever it leads to work-wise, it will most certainly lead to two friends getting back together and having a ball!
Keith said: "We really didn't notice it turn into "a bunch of guys stuffed in a dorm room in their underwear" until it was too late. (It was hot!)"
*snickers* Yea it was! It only gets funnier the older I get and the more warped my mind gets. Rewatching it on DVD so many years later makes me snicker with inappropriate thoughts. I apologize and attribute it to first watching it as a 15 year old with raging hormones.
Dude, it's *so* cool Keith Coogan's trolling the site. Totally another one of my fav actors from my childhood. Awesome!
I need to go watch the movie now... And go buy a lot of mouthwash and snicker when asked why I have so much. Ah, good times...
cheers!
Ive always liked you and your work, but after finding this blog i realized that you really are just a nice, down to earth guy. And a GEEK! :P I really hope that you and sean do a signing together! Hey, Jeanine, another Cleveland, Ohio native here who'd also travel some serious miles to see a dual book signing (actually, I just wanna see Wil, but I'll go for Sean too). So, get that number outta your pocket Wil! We wanna come see you.
Still hoping that you'll come out this way one of these days. NYC would be close enough, but I'd love to see you in Ohio. Hey, all the candidates can't get enough of our state. We must have something worth seeing!
I was at Sean Astin's book signing tonight at the Book Revue in Huntington, NY, so I mentioned, as he kindly scribbled his name on my copy of TaBA that you had commented in WWdN that you'd love to do a thing with him, and would he please say yes to the idea and make my little fangirlish heart gleeful?
He said it sounded excellent, and that you two are great friends so he loved the idea. So sorry for stealing your thunder, Wil, but I couldn't resist asking him.
So please do, and if you make the Book Revue a stop, I will take you both out for a beer. =)
If you and Sean do a signing together (wasn't it slightly funny how he misspelled your name? I snickered I admit it) PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!! (I'm asking, begging, and authorized to go as far as grovelling) COME TO TAMPA FLORIDA!!! I realize that was hard to read because of all my comments, but the gist was Come to Tampa, and please bring Sean. I love both of you and your books (And god bless Toy Soldiers...you know why) and I love LOTR! I'm actually doing the shortening name...*puts up a fist* yay for all geeks. No one saw that... Please Wil, ask Sean, come here to Florida. I promise we'll keep the hurricanes away *nervous gigling*. I'll bring my friends (whether willingly or kidnapped...) to wherever...but bear in mind, we have a great Barnes and Nobles down here. Just keep that in mind. Bye.
Love,
Beth
I'm going to see Sean at Borders in Chicago (the Michigan Avenue one) this Sunday...haven't read his book yet, but I'm sure as heck pickin' it up there, especially if he's signing things. Hopefully I will not turn into Drooling Fangirl.
It would be so awesome to have a dual book signing, where I may get Sean to spell my name correctly (Sorry Wil, just kidding! I'm not bitter you spelt it wrong for DB! Dawn got you to spell it right in JAG!).
I would LOOOVE to hear some commentary for TS! Can you believe that when it came out on video my cousin Marc had it and refused to let me watch it? He said it was a "boy movie" (he also said DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince's 'Summertime' album was only for boys... )and I wasn't allowed to watch it! A few years later I found out that he had crushes on all of you guys and liked the infamous underwear scene! LOL! Who doesn't? Nice undies, guys! ;)
I really think it's awesome that you're gonna call Sean up, Wil. I am in the middle of reading his book as well, and just can't get into it. Maybe I shouldn't start reading at 1:30 am.
Thanks for the giggles!
"Toy Soldiers" is one of the all time coolest
movies.
For heavens sake Wil, call Sean already!
Wil,
Any chance it's possible for your publisher to get the audiobook done in time for holiday shopping? I was strolling through Costco the other day and wished I could buy a shrinkwrapped JAG combo audio & print book to give to friends....
Seems to me a Costco holiday book-signing tour in the Trekkie-laden and geek-filled SF Bay Area would be lucrative, too. Just a thought.
Winona--any chance you'll save me a spot in line since I'll have a rambunctious little girl with me?
Oh, and Sean's heading to New Zealand after this short signing tour to do some work on some project...
FYI.
"I never did a movie that was that well written, shot, or acted."
Why don't you write and/or direct one? Take the bull by the balls, man! I mean, there's only one Rob Reiner, but still!
Russ-
"http://www.level3.com/2014.html"?? Dork.
(Okay, maybe it was a TINY bit funny.)
I considered buying Toy Soldiers yesterday so it's a coincidence that I'm reading Wil and Keith remember the good ol' days.
Remember yesterday when I almost bought Toy Soldiers at HMV but bought Dogma (special edition) instead? Damn budget.
I'd request a Wil/Sean reading in Toronto but it's never going to happen.
(Come on, ALL the cool actors come here. You know you wanna.)
I guess I just did. Request, that is.
This must be the lamest comment I've ever left in this space.
P.S. to Russ:
I can't stop swooning at "rambunctious little girl" even though I wasn't going to mention it here. She's the cutest. I was grinning for hours yesterday after I saw her.
Um, well, when I went to Amazon and saw Sean's reviews I was surprised to hear him called a "whiner" repeatedly. More bad reviews than good ones. Yikes.
Then I looked at your reviews and all were positive.
Don't you think that Sean may feel a little overshadowed by your superior writing?
Just a thought for Just a Geek. :)
A local B&N had Sean's book out early so I bought it and read it within a couple of days. It was very engrossing. I don't agree with most of the criticism on Amazon.
I met Sean at a signing on Saturday and he was such a sweet guy.
Oh, one of the girls I was standing in line with was a big Toy Soldiers fan (me too!) and I believe she planted another seed with Sean about doing a book tour with you.
