melt the statues in the park
A few readers have told me that WWdN is nominated for Best Big Name Blog in the 2004 Best of the Blogs awards, so I headed over there to see who else was nominated, and to perhaps correct the assertion that I'm a Big Name anything.
Holy crap, am I in some good company. Namely, Tony Pierce and Dooce.
So look, here's the thing: If you're going to go there and vote, you'd better vote for Tony. Right now he only has 13 votes, and that's because I can only vote once a day. I'm serious. This isn't some sort of false humility -- it's a fact. Tony Pierce writes one of the best (and more often than not THE best) blogs on the Internets. Go read his site if you doubt me. Tony is fearless, funny, and talented. And pick up his book How To Blog while you're there.

ABC names blogger people of the year. How cool is that
Posted by: Katie B | January 4, 2005 1:40 PM
Good grief. Out of all those dozens of blogs, the only ones I'v heard of are Wil's and Neil Gaiman's. Who are the rest of these people? Am I supposed to have heard of them?
Posted by: Toasted Amigo | January 4, 2005 1:54 PM
Too bad... I voted for you as well. You're running second by the way...
Posted by: Nadia | January 4, 2005 1:59 PM
You really think I would vote for anyone but you Wil? I dont drive 60+ miles to see your competitors shows. I don't drive 70 miles to get their books signed.
Heck, you've inspired me to start blogging. So shut up and take my vote!
:)

You should try living in Ireland man, It rains here nearly every day in winter, so I guess the beauty is lost on us a little...
Hey Wil, Good to have you back.
You deserve to win the best blog man, not soley cos you right the best blogs but you inspire others to try it out who might otherwise not have. (i.e. me!) Feck the modesty and VOTE WIL! LOL ...
Vote for WIL at http://www.blogmechanics.com/bob/voteMain.php (under the best big name category

I work customer service for an insurance company (not going to name to co because i get told at least 15 times a day that we are the worst out there. no really. i DO get told that about 15 times a day) and I mentioned your name one time, can't remember why, but the women didn't know what movie or show you were in, but she knew your name.
No tell me, someone has no clue what show or movie it was that made you famous, but she recognizes your name and you don't think you are "Big Name"?
Self confidence is something you don't seem to have a great deal of. Let me recommend a book. It will teach you to appreciate the gifts that you have and show you that the nobody's out there are really bigger somebody's that the somebody's.
It's called "Just A Geek" and you can get it from Amazon.com.

I appreciate the sentiment, Veronica, but I wasn't talking about a lack of self-confidence. It's about self-image. I don't think of myself as a Big Time anything (except husband and stepfather.)
I'm just this guy, you know? :)

Super Hella Mad Ass props on:
a) the nomination
and
b) Not only knowing, but using, the widely unknown Mike Mills sung under-verse to R.E.M.'s "Fall On Me" at the title of this post.

I browsed the other two blogs that you linked, Wil. I liked Dooce pretty well, Tony's wasn't my cup of tea. I just prefer your style, I guess. These kinds of polls are all a matter of taste, of course.
As to whether you are a Big Time anything: the only ones that really matter are the ones you named, i.e. spouse and parent. If you can be Big Time at those things, you are way ahead of the rest of the pack. Everything else is gravy. The cool thing is, you know this; not everyone does.

Wil
Sorry dude - my vote for Big Name Blog has to go to Neil Gaiman. I hadn't seen this site before today, and it's cool and all, and I do appreciate your humour, humility, and friendliness - but Neil G. is just one of the froodiest dudes on the planet. (and maybe off, I don't know) Check him out, if you don't believe me. :)
Carry on, Ensign.

But I don't read *his* blog. :)
Posted by: Lisa | January 5, 2005 8:08 AM
hmm... let's say pierce wins. what's he supposed to think then?! "oh yeah man, i won because wheaton told all his readers to vote for me."
???
if that isn't screwed, than i don't know...

Had to vote for you as I've never heard of any of the others on that site. Probably not big names here in the UK.
Happy New Year to ya

Sorry, Wil; I had to vote for you. I do not know any of these other dudes. Besides, you are the greatest.

Wil,
Yes Tony did get my vote. Yes you were the one that introduced me to blogging. Yes it was Patrick Norton that introduced me to WWdN. Yes I bought Just a Geek. Yes I loved it. Yes I told everyone I knew about it. Yes I miss the sentimental heart felt thought provoking posts that laid the foundation for Just a Geek. Yes I plan on buying Bancing Darefoot. Yes I think your wife should pick up the pseudonym of Gibraltar or Ayers or any other significant rock in the world. Yes I am glad to read occasionally that you make that glaringly apparent to her. Yes I wonder who is the Rangers fan with kids named Nolan and Ryan. Yes I wanna read more about your TX Hold ‘em playing adventures. Yes your audblogs make me think. Yes I related to your expectations of your 20 not meeting the reality of your 30s. Yes I read your blog on a very regular basis, (does every day count). Yes I will continue to do so. And Yes it was me.
Take care.

I'm also a finalist at the Bob Awards for most Humorous blog, and behind, but that's ok, because I blog for fun.
I also voted for you, Wil! Sorry!
I been reading you for a long time, even before I started my blog, and I never read the others until now, and they have great blogs, but you are my favorite Big Name Blog!
I hope you have a Happy New Year, Wil, with lots of fun, and clean socks!

Wil,
I voted for you again today. You've slipped to third place. Will vote for you again manyana (sic).

Hey Wil, talk about "seven degrees of separation" in blogosphere... I just saw this: http://meltingdolls.blogspot.com/2005/01/not-only-has-he-charmed-pants-off.html
:-)
Well done, BTW!!

Hey Wil...lovely blog I do enjoy...and thanks for the tip on Dooce. Her blog really is great. I have to say though, I was reading some back issues and came across this from Thursday, 31 January 2002. You probably know it already, but in a post entitled Stand By Me she mentions celebrities trying to be normal people:
"That’s why they have personal websites with built-in audiences who obviously don’t care about design or content. That’s why they overuse exclamation marks and italic text to really — no, I mean, really! — get their point across.
That’s why I say, ha ha, yes! 50,000 Monkeys can be wrong!"
I love both blogs now and I have a feeling you both do too. Still...I thought it was funny. Pleasance to all and have a blast at MacWorld. I'll be frantically hitting refresh up here in Oregon.
