go whole hog or not at all
This dovetails with the post I wrote the other day about being who I want to be, instead of who I think I'm supposed to be:

That IS profound. Funny (or not funny) how it often takes a life/death situation to make you realize that. Here's to hoping all of us achieve that living Nirvana... that earthly enlightenment without experiencing a near tragedy in order to realize it.

While Jerry G. got serious about his guitar playing, unfortunately the other thing he got serious about was black tar heroin, to the point that when an intervention occurred, he told those concerned he'd take the heroin over the band.
As Jimmy Smits as Matt Santos said on The West Wing a week or two ago, context is everything.

Every one of us has abilities beyond our belief to achieve in anything we desire. We refrain from listenening to the voices that offer motivation and inspiration and instead lend an ear to the voices that sabatoge and devastate. Jerry Garcia had to survive tragedy to realize this and change it....

I think it is a matter of perspective.
Why stand around talking about travel when you can move your feet and experience it?
Life is filled with choices. Sadly, Jerry made some bad choices too.
As for all of you:
May your lives never be stagnant and your goal to make GOOD choices in your lives. Do not worry about failing, for when we do fail, we have succeeded in learning what doesn't work.
