Radio Free Burrito Episode Zero

Alive Well, here it is! It's alive!

As I wrote earlier today, "It will either be really cool, or the stupidest fucking thing in history, and I'll proceed accordingly." My initial feeling is that it falls somewhere in the middle: it's longer than I wanted, and it's a little unfocused, but I'm willing to allow myself the freedom to make as many mistakes as it takes to either come up with something cool, or accept that I just don't have what it takes to make a podcast.

Observations on getting this thing from my brains to your ears: I thought the recording would be very hard, but it was actually super easy. I've tried in Audacity several times before, and it never wants to work, so today I just followed the instructions from Apple for creating podcasts in Garageband, and it was simple and easy. But holy shit the converting and the uploading was so hard, I felt like I had no thumbs and an IQ of 24. I'm sorry to report that this episode is only available in the stupid, proprietary, Apple AAC format, but that's the only format I could get to upload (the .aiff file was over 300MB, and TypePad just wouldn't let me upload it. That was really annoying.)

So now I need to know what you, the audience, think. What would you like more of? Less of? Is it too long? Is it too narrowly focused, or not broad enough? Most importantly: when it was over, did you feel like I earned your 30 minutes, or did you feel like you wasted your time?

Heh. The last time I felt this nervous about releasing something into the wild, it was the first version of Dancing Barefoot. This is both cool and scary.

Afterthought: I just realized that I stupidly recorded this thing in super-ultra-hyper-mega-stereo, when nifty-old-mono would have been just fine. The result is a ridiculously large file (71.8 MB) which I can only leave up for a few hours before I blow through all my bandwidth. I'll see if I can convert the file I have to mono, and if not, look for Episode .05 to hit the airwaves in the next 48 hours. Yeah, I am really a moran. iTunes won't let me convert it to mp3, and Audacity won't even open it. So this file will stay up until about 8:00 PM Pacific time, when I'll have to take it down. If someone wants to mirror the file, go nuts. Gods, I am sofa king stupid. I blame my nervousness for this ultrarookie error. When you mock, please mock me gently.

AfterthoughtAfterthought: I owe Shane Nickerson a huge debt of gratitude, because he pointed out to me my stupid mistake. I'll reveal my shame a bit later on. In the meantime, here is a .mp3 file, which is much smaller: "only" 27.3MB:

And the coolest of them all . . . a .torrent. Man, do I feel like I've arrived now! Thanks, Brian! :)

Holy moly. 71.7MB! This better be good :-)

13 minutes of download to go....

Dude, I think you can just right/ctrl click on the file in iTunes and convert it from AAC to MP3. (Note: this doesn't work for the "Protected" AAC files you buy from Apple's online store.)

You beat me to it. :-P I was going to mention the gargantuan file size. I downloaded it to my iPod a bit ago.

Now I am going to pretend I am working and listen to your podcast.

Wil, can you please please convert the file to mp3?

Some of us (me) have not given in to the Apple craze yet!!!!

Heh.

Thank God I have iTunes and a fairly fast internet connection. And hard disk space too.

It was cool. The best was the story about the FireFly dr. Sweet and all that. Good luck on your sitcom.

I, for one, enjoyed it quite a bit. And my kids came to listen to the slinky song, because they'd never heard it before. Or at least the real version. I think they thought I was making it up all this time.

Excellent job, sir!

AAC is in fact a non-proprietary format.:)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Audio_Coding

Wow -- you have quite the radio voice. I mean, um, podcast voice....

Excellent podcast! You can probably get the filesize down by not using Apple Lossless (though as an audiophile, thanks for using Apple lossless!). I'm sure there's some way in itunes to re-encode to a lower bitrate, and/or save as an mp3.

But anyway, as someone who used to be a theater minor, I love hearing about all the acting stuff. It reminds me of my college days when I hung out with the actor/geeks.

I also love the no edit policy, though your throat sounded like it was taking a beating there.

I say, don't worry about time limits so much, just pick a topic and go. :)

I loved hearing how enthusiastic you sounded talking about your audition experience--it adds a depth to the WWDN experience.

Nicely done.

i'm happy to mirror it. it's not a great connection, but it should keep on truckin'

radio_free_burrito_episode_zero.mp3

Bravo! The 30 minutes went by quickly. That's a good sign.

I especially liked your Firefly story. It's comforting to hear that actors also get starstruck.

You know how the shoemaker's kids never have shoes? (No? Just go with it, it's an expression.) Well, I work in IT, but I never have a working sound card in any home PC. So not only have I not been able to watch Shane's vlogs, now I can't listen to Wil's podcast. Stoopid sound card.

Yay! Finally!

I love this podcast thing. Please keep it! :)

- Kelly (totally devoted Wheaton-ite)

Dang it! And there's a Firefly story in there, too. I HAVE to listen to this at work tomorrow. FF was one of my favorite shows.

I'll mock you gently. Mock you slowly. Take it easy, 'cause I know you have never podcasted like this before....

(with my sincere apologies to Andy Kim...)

Wil-

If you want to play music and not have to worry about getting sued, you might want to look into the PodSafe Music Network (music.podshow.com).

And I'm sure you'll be able find sponsors without too much effort. You're Wil f***ing Wheaton, for cryin' out loud!

Howdy.

It is true that I made a brilliant suggestion (pat on back) for a future podcast. I doubt that I am the only one who would like to hear a sketch from the three of you.

I really enjoyed the podcast. Keep it up.

I really didnt enjoy playing in the West Coast Warmup (yes I am out already. 63rd). Sometimes you get the cards, and sometimes, they get you.

That was awesome, Wil. I especially liked the break, made me laugh out loud.

Can't wait for the next one.

Another rookie mistake: the mp3 file still has all of the MIME stuff that iTunes tacked onto it, so when I left click on the link it's opening in Quicktime automatically, instead of letting me choose what to do with the file. FYI.

Wil (and other readers): is it possible to have a podcast that is more than one track? Maybe ship a playlist pointing to URLs or something?

One more idea: for the next Q&A how about if people each send their question as MP3 files (a few seconds each) so we can have the question in the questioner's voice?

Wil, thanks for that. Made my day.

Great podcast... I'll be happy if you continue this tradition! Funny and entertaining and a variety of other good things. Keep it up!

Wil,

aac is not Apple's proprietary format. It is the next generation standard from mp3. There's a lot of open source code around it (including my own mpeg4ip project).

You should be able to create files that are about 1/2 the size with similiar quality to mp3.

Also, to convert inside of itunes, all you have to do is set the IMPORT codec and speed and size (it's a little backward that way). Preferences->Advanced->Import. There's even a spoken podcast setting if you chose aac encoder(32Kbps mono, with itunes 6.0 )

Awesome podcast! I haven't been much of a podcast listener in the past, but you may just convert me. :)

Shane Nickerson RULES!

Wil,

I enjoyed the podcast. First you get me hooked on EggRadio.com (thank god I found a replacement for my dearly departed station) and now I will have something else to listen to. I didn't even realize it had been 30 minutes. I enjoyed listening to your audition experience. You had a great radio voice. I hope you keep up with the 'no editing' policy. It gave it more character.

I definitely agree that Annie, Shane, and yourself would be very entertaining.

Laurie, aka EmmaFrost

Hi,

I've been reading your blog now for a little over a year and I think this is the first time I've been compelled to post a comment.

I freakin' loved your Radio Free Burrito!

Thanks and keep 'em coming!
Jon

Hey Wil, I'm a fairly long-time reader and I just listened to your podcast (it's about time!). I loved it, I can't say I would change anything. I normally don't like long podcasts, but I didn't even realize it was 30 minutes because you're so fun to listen to. Keep it up, please! :)

Wil,

Excellent! Great to hear the voice of the blog I've read for so very long.

You could do a podcast a week, and if you asked for donations, I would bet that you get enough to cover the extra bandwidth. I'd contribute. It's entertainment!

Good job! Thanks

DJ

Hey Wil, congrads on the podcast and great to hear that your casting call went awesome. I always wanted to be an actor myself but lets say stage fright keep me from living my dreams. I did go on a couple audtions but lets say they didn't go well. All I have to say is I feel very sorry for the janitor at a certain studio. Anyways I did leave my mark. If you know what I mean. LOL. if any producers need a actor that can vomit on command I'll take that part. LOL

Ok why I really want to post was to let you know if you every need any webspace to store files (such as podcasts or you need a place to mirror things at, I have my own server and I can give you or anyone alot of free space I believe I current have around 100 gigs of space, and my bandwith is 2.4 Terrabytes a month. If anyone here or you want to take me up on the offer just contact me at Rparr28922@hotmail.com

Wil - delete this if it's inappropriate.

Unauthorized low-bandwidth-friendly re-encoding (24kbps MP3 - 5MB)

Webspace courtesy someone who said they'd remove it if the bandwidth got out of control. So if it's suddenly unavailable, you know why. :)

There should be a Mac implementation of LAME (MP3) that should be able to go quickly from full-bit stereo to low-bandwidth mono on the fly. (I used WinLAME to do that, but that's a Windows port.)

Awesome...keep 'em coming.

Regarding blooflame's post...I don't have much computer knowledge but I'm sure there is a way to do a playlist, as I download the CBC Radio 3 podcast which has a drop down list (with URLs) come up in iTunes so that you can have chapters. Maybe someone else actually knows how?

Posted by: blooflame |

Wil (and other readers): is it possible to have a podcast that is more than one track? Maybe ship a playlist pointing to URLs or something?

I am really overwhelmed by everyone's positive reaction. Thank you so much. I'll do my best to keep the length short, keep the content interesting, and keep the file size smaller.

Thank you to everyone who e-mailed in comments and suggestions, too. :)

Wil, that was the best podcast I've ever listened to, and I've listened to many a good one.

Don't worry about length -- just last night I listened to one that went for 50 minutes, yet it felt like only 10. Just keep it interesting, and we shall listen.

P.S.: Mike Doughty rules. You should so try to get an interview. I'd listen to it... more than once, even.

Thanks, Wil, for the entertaining podcast - and thanks, UglyRedHonda, for the smaller file.

Hey, that was pretty fun.
You asked for feedback, so here goes.

Stop thanking me so much.
I'm listening already. ;-)

A few more short music clips or sound effects would be fun.

(I'm thinking of A Prairie Home Companion here)

The skit idea is a GREAT one, follow up on that.

Keep track of the time in your head, we don't need to hear about it.

I am SO jealous you talked to ANYONE from Firefly...!!!

How did you keep from peeing your pants???

I didn't feel like I wasted half an hour, I played a game of Zuma while I was listening to you. (I lost, I don't know if that means anything....but I felt compelled to share that bit of information.)

I'll listen again. I want to see where you go with this.

Wil - I am so glad that you are podcasting now. I love the blog but listening is so much cooler.

You need to get a promo up - I would love to play it on my podcast.

Keep up the podcasting.

Not too shabby Wil. As previous commentors have said consider a bit of variety with musak or other sound media to reflect your tone. The sketch is a great idea and should come natch to acting types. Don't sweat the time as much and how bout looking at just doing *topics* down the road. You can either get thoughtful or get ranty as long as it's something that matters to you. Time was pretty much OK...shorter would have seemed like a bit of fluff I suspect and longer would have required a certain *something* to keep the listener involved. A good double (might have been better but that dood in Left field has a real cannon).

Great job! Very listenable. I was going to say that it was a little "hokey" but then I thought about it and I realized that...no offense...you are a little hokey. It's part of your charm, so keep it up. Oh, my wife is saying that you weren't hokey but you were being genuine. Okay, I stand corrected. Hey, I've got an idea sweetie...why don't you write this. Seriously...come over here and finish this. C'mon, finish my thought for me. Why are you leaving? Hey!

Chicken.

Wil, that was freaking AWESOME! The time just zipped by and it was over before I knew it! Damn dude, don't change a thing! Keep the length, keep the stories, and keep the podcasts coming! It was like sitting down to read your blog but you were reading it to me instead. I cannot heap enough praise upon you! Keep it up bro! ROCK ON!

That was so much fun. You have a smooooth radio voice (except when you cough into the mic). :) :)

Wil,

I really enjoyed it. It kept getting better as you went along. I'd say maybe a tad shorter; 15-20 min? You tell a great story, and the audition bit had all the things that keep me coming back to your blog: stepkids, a peek into the acting world, and good storytelling. Keep it up.

I have to say that you truly won me over with the thank you at the end...it sounded genuine, and made me glad that I'd spent that time listening. Not that you'd need to do that again and again, but who doesn't like feeling appreciated, hey?

looking forward to more!

Wil~

OMG! You sound great recorded! Your voice is very clear, and I think we all know you can't broadcast/podcast if you mumble.

The thing I liked most about your Podcast was your stories about interactions with other people. You've written about a bunch of them, and the way you told it was exactly the same. I was practically there. I wouldn't mind hearing more of the same. I especially liked your story about FireFly and your step kids. That was so touching, and so real.

More! More!

~Becca

It's not a podcast until you set up a feed for it... until then it's just a group of files (or in this case one ginormous file...)

Listening to it right at the moment... I'm glad you decided not to edit out bits...

Your cough sounded a bit more like the death star exploding... or... maybe just a car backfiring... sorry, just finished watching the first movie (aka the fourth one... I thought it was the original, but sadly it was the bastardized version...)

Yeah, you need to compress and cut down more... 48bit mono is just fine for talking...

Come to Borders San Rafael... best damn store in our district! (Our stock room has been amazingly clean recently, cirtainly free of books...), plus today I completely realphebetized the General Dogs section...

yeah...

Ok, I'll shut up now and wait for your damn thing to rebuffer...

Funnily enough, Mike Doughty did a radio interview out here on 101.9 (Honolulu, HI). This was a very Doughty day for me.

I enjoyed the podcast - keep 'em coming, and don't worry so much about sucking ;)

Wil,

I don't know i fyou should worry so much about the length. You have a very engaging, lively "radio voice" and I, personally, could listen to you talk for hours.

Very well done, all in all, especially for a novice. This has the potential to become a GREAT thing, much like the iconic WWdN.

Have fun conquering the podcast world!

Wil,
Still can't find a freakin e-mail address for you, and your wil@wilwheaton.net says that address is not accepting e-mail.

I'm more than willing to mirror the file if you want, just let me know. fyre@fyreplace.com PGP key availible at a keyserver near you (http://the.earth.li:11371/pks/lookup?op=get&search=C98BF81EBE848F53)

That was fantastic Wil, really easy to listen to and for want of a less Bennyhillesque word, it was just the right length. I just know you probably can't commit that time each week.
It was spot on.

Wow. Long. The last answer was definitely the most interesting to me. (But I'm totally into Firefly.)

So the guy you met is Sean Maher. Ain't he great? I've never met him, but I've read stories of other fans who have. Everyone says he is that nice and approachable. I have met the girl who played Kaylee (Jewel Staite) and the man who played Jayne (Adam Baldwin). (Technically, I "met" Cap'n Mal, Nathan Fillion, when I got an autograph from him, but I didn't chat with him like I did with the other two.) They're all unbelievably down to earth and cool.

Good to hear you did so well at the audition. But if you were up for the same part as Sean...my loyalties are torn. Nah, I'd be happy if either of you got it.

And, nice "Serenity" shout out in your last song. Done like a true Browncoat.

Wil,

Unrelated to the post - I sent you an e-mail a few days back about a fiction opportunity I'm involved with, one that I think you'd enjoy. With your domain problems, I wanted to make sure you got it.

If not, please shoot me an e-mail at jchines42 [at] hotmail.com.

Best,
Jim

Not that you need yet another opinion, but I'll provide mine anyway. I wouldn't worry too much about the length - it didn't seem all that long to me. However, if you were to shorten it, I would recommend going with one story (like the Firefly thing - that was cool) rather than a series of short quips.

Wil,
I really enjoyed the podcast! I knew I was going to comment when you talked about meeting Richard Hatch from Battlestar Galactica. I met him years ago at Motor City Comicon in Detroit. I was a "drooling fan girl." I never know what to say to stars I've admired because, standing in front of them as a 37 year-old woman & saying "I thought you were so hot when I was 10," just seems so gauche! But, seriously, I remember Mr. Hatch being very nice. I was at the con to game & we talked about that some. I should have told him how Sunday nights in 1978 were family nights & the only night we could eat in front of the tv because of BG. That would have been more of an experience like you had with (the incredibly hot) Sean Maher. Firefly really was brilliant.

But, speaking of brilliant, you asked for comments on your podcast. I did think it was a little long, but I was eating breakfast, too, so it was a good way to pass the time. I fast-forwarded through your answer to the first question, which may have been a stupid thing to do, but I've read the "If this is your first time here read this" link on your blog & I figured that was the answer. Was I wrong?

I agree with the folks who've said that your last answer - the story about your auditions - was the best, but I enjoyed all the parts I listened to. Definitely do the skit - I've been loving the banter between you three just on your blog.

OK, now MY post has gone on too long. Thanks for reading!

- Katy Loebrich

Hi Wil,

Just signed up for a typepad account so I could tell you I loved it! Like many others I really enjoyed hearing about your Firefly experience. You have a great voice for this. Keep up the great work!

Cheers,
Kirstie

Why do all the truly talented have such low self-esteem? You should have known you were going to rule doing this, Wil. ;)
I thought the length was fine, but if folks want 'em shorter, you could just do more I guess.
Interviews would be an intriguing area for you to move into - move over Mr. Lipton! Inside the Actors' Podcast.
Suggestion: Get Dr. Pauly & such as guests. ;)

Very well done and went by in no time - well actually 30 minutes or so, but felt like no time.

I sent you an email with comments so as not to plug up the comment thread here.

Will be listening to more for sure in future.

Hey Wil!
I've been reading for a while, and figured this would be as good an opportunity as any to say hello. The podcast was great, but I agree that it was probably a bit lengthy. (Then again, I do usually have the attention span of gnat)
Anyway, great job, can't wait to hear more from you.

I think 30 minutes was great - if you keep putting in stuff like slinky song(which I need to thank you for since you reminded me that is something the OT said would be great for my boys).

your voice is really great - I could see you being a talk show DJ & going on for 4 hours a day(tho I don't think it would pay as good but you could do it)

My cat was totally disgusted with me when I picked her up and danced with her to the Slinky song...wherever did you find THAT?

I agree with those who suggest you limit it to 15-20 minutes, though I wasn't bored by any of it (In fact, I have listened to your entire Fandom interview with Chase Masterson a couple of times and that is far longer). I truly enjoyed the answer to the last question containing the story about the doctor from Serenity/Firefly. It was a good mix of professional impressions and personal anecdote.

All in all, well done for you pilot podcast. I look forward to hearing more.

That was great Wil! I've never been compelled to listen to a podcast before so congrats (I guess) for pushing me over the edge. Now I'll really be useless at work ;)

For whatever reason, your voice was not what I was expecting. Not as 'nerdy' I suppose :)

I've always appreciated your storytelling on WWdN and it's cool to hear it live. It's great for those of us who will likely never get to see you perform in person.

Keep it up! I also appreciate the .mp3 format as I'm still sans iPod.

Wil,

I was listening to your RFB podcast and it gave me the most intense flashback into something I used to do as a kid, around 8-10 years old or so. My brothers and I used to record ourselves giving made-up interviews or news broadcasts on the old cassette players they had back in the late 70's and early 80's. We made up themes we thought were pretty funny, and just generally had a hilarious time recording ourselves and listening to it later on. Of course, we never really let other people listen to it...

It was a form of expression that I think later developed into my involvement in theater in high school, and further into the way I address my university classes when I teach.

It is a great childhood memory of mine, and somehow the idea of podcasting created a connection to this in my mind this morning... I suppose this is/was a common activity for children of that age, but I also wonder how many podcasters might have started off this way?

Anyway, let me add my support for future editions of Radio Free Burrito. I enjoyed it very much.

Wil,
I was able to recompress your file into a mono 64kbps MP3. Cuts the file size down to 13.6MB. If you want it, I could either put it up in my file sharing area on .mac or anywhere you want.

writing this as i listen:
only a two hour flight from la? wanna extend that to four? ;)
slinky!! aw... i wonder where my slinky went...
your whole acting story makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside haha :D and now i get to go to my production meeting in a good mood! yay! today, stage managing might be a little easier :) thanks! ♥

I have only listened to the first of the podcast but I can already tell you should keep doing this(if able).

Never listened to a podcast before, but I was compelled to listen to yours, considering how much I enjoyed reading "Just a Geek" and your blog. Like everyone else here, I loved it. I also thought that 27 minutes was really long, but the time flew by. You're not only a great actor and writer, you're quite the public speaker as well. I also liked the idea of a podcast with Annie and Shane - I think that would be fantastic.

Sent you a drewling fangirl e-mail crit. I wish I was techie enough to know what a "mirror" was and how to do it. I had to settle with posting the URL on my blog with an edit to all my friends to go and listen. Cool. Ness.

well, that just shot my morning all to hell. I'm supposed to be doing stuff today. I have a list. instead, I'm downloading wil, listening to wil, jumping up and down when wil describes meeting sean maher (and it's not as if _I_ met him; my excitement is so second hand), and then writing to friends about the stories in the podcast. excellent. my nerd genes win out again.

anyway, good going, wil. you have a great radio voice; keep in the "stupid stuff". let us know how the whole audition thing works out. and thanks for putting me in a good mood for the day.

loved hearing how enthusiastic you sounded. You have such a great voice for this type of stuff . keep it up .. Love it .

I must say Wil that this was the best time I have had on your site. I really enjoyed the podcast. It is not too long. I mean I could listen to all you have to say. You are frickin hilarious when talking about being a "fan" and it seeps out of you and happens. I mean we are all human. It is cool to meet these great people who everyone knows and their character has impacted you. BTW I am also a big Firefly fan...did you see the movie? Wow, I love all of Joss Wheadon's stuff. Anyways. I would keep coming back to listen to another podcast. But I am becoming a big Wil fan and will return to the site everyday! Go Wil!

BTW Good Luck on the jobs man!

Hey there!

Very awesome you have a very nice radio voice and you made me laugh outloud and I love firefly and ...

*reiterates what everyone here has said*

so yes keep it up and I think I may pose a question to you for next time

Great stuff Wil!

A reminder to those who DL with bittorrent, please leave your bittorrent client running after the DL completes to share the load.

A link to the existing torrent in case that tracker dies:

GREAT Podcast, thanks for taking the time to make one, Wil! I'll be happy to mirror future podcasts.

Got a question: is there a way I could get an autograph?

;-)

The tracker will not go down.. it hss been up since Feb 2005. I help out with Kiddie Records Weekly.. as you can tell by the torrent files listed at the tracker. I have to restart the tracker every once and a while because the stats get all messed up..

Bravo - well done. Played it loud while working in my studio. I also the story about Firefly... it was fun, quick, and was great to hear outloud (audio really captured your fanboy emotion).

I'd say keep this podcast simple: one story, and answer two letters, and goodnight, gracie. Keep your mistakes in too (makes it easier for you, and keeps it all fresh sounding).

Dan

I thought the Podcast was great, great enough to get me to create an account so I could leave a comment, which says a lot. It make some very dreary work that much more enjoyable. Hope to hear more of them soon (and I thought the length was fine). Thanks!

Ok StatikKling. I didn't know the history of the tracker and saw some burps while I was on the swarm, so I figured I'd provide an alternative. I wasn't trying to imply anything.

I'm glad the torrent is active 'cause it's a great server-friendly way to get a file out to a lot of people in a hurry without killing your bandwidth or upload quota.

I just finished listening...great job!! Convenient that we were having a company lunch meeting. Darn, I missed it and ate pizza in my office listening to the podcast. Congrats on the great audition...keep us all up to date on whether you get the gig and when we might see you on the screen again. I'll be eagerly awaiting the next one. Maybe you can mike yourself and cover the next WWdN Invitational...I'm sure you can do a better job than Norm and Lon did on the WSOP!

Wil,
Great podcast, and I also echo some of the other comments above. Time is not a big deal.

I had just finished listening to your book Just a Geek last week. Excellent book btw.

Keep it going, and we'll keep listening.

WOW!
The first thing I thought when I heard teh pod cast was, "What a great radio voice!" But it seems a but redundant saying that now, eh?
Anywho, just wanna say keep up the good work. Your Blog and Cast have great entertainment value. But, next time could you read us some of the creepy questions? You don't have to answer them. I am always interested to hear what whackos ask people like you. You know, famous people. Total nerds, geeks, etc.

Oops.
Didn't mean to post twice. I keep having computer probs and hit the button again and...
but i gues you don't need to hear 'bout that. I'll shut up now.

Wil, the podcast was great. I especially liked the raw quality of it; that you didn't edit out the odd pause and occasional off-beat expression. You are a great storyteller, and that shines through even more via voice than on your blog. It is the little windows into your life, like talking about auditions, shows, and your kids that makes WWDN and this podcast so much fun for me to listen to. I'm a geek too, a writer, and in a family with step-kids. Your outlook is refreshing, down-to-earth and funny. At least when you're not talking about poker... so, sue me ;D

Keep up the good work. I hope some day one of your non-tv shows - or at least a book tour - makes it up here to the snowy north.

P.S. I'm a huge CSI fan, and loved your appearance!

YOU MET THE CUTEST PERSON FROM FIREFLY.

Also, that sketch idea is awesome. You should roll with it.

It was great Wil! I've always loved the audio blog entries you would ocasionally do. Very cool. I can't wait for the next one.

Lovin' the Radio Free Burrito. I think 30 minutes is a good length. My commute to work is 45-60, so you keep me entertained for a good chunk of that.
Also, did you think about asking if Family Guy was interested in a Wil Wheaton guest spot? That would rock. Of course, the Griffins would totally trash you... but it'd be fun.

"The first thing I thought when I heard teh pod cast was, "What a great radio voice!" But it seems a but redundant saying that now, eh?"

It seemed even more redundant the second time I read it :-)

Excellent Wil, well worth the listen. I'd say you should keep it at around the 30 minute mark but if you are going to cut it down then I'm with the people who favour the one longer story rather than the shorter Q&A style stuff.

Can't wait for the next one.

Hey Wil -- Loved it. The first ten minutes or so were just OK, but once you got into storytelling mode the time flew by. Good thing you didn't cut yourself off after ten minutes or we would have missed the best part!

I enjoyed the PCast v much.
It was natural and fun and the mistakes just made you seem more like a real person and less like a performing monkey or robotic automiton like others.

Keep it up!
:)

You had me at "one, two three, four, a lot of stupid things".

Absolutely busted up.

You need to create a feed for it to be a podcast, otherwise it's just an mp3 on a web page.

I suggest using feedburner to get up and running -- it takes care of all the annoying things like Itunes being super picky about formatting and stuff.

Wil,
I too enjoyed the podcast. The length wasn't a problem (that's what the 'pause' button is for).
One tech thing: I found that the music bits were quite loud compared to the level of your voice. Although I'm playing back through my desktop speakers & not headphones, so there may be a difference.

Thanks & keep up the excellent work.

Wil,
That was friggin' awesome. I agree with one of the previous comments - once you got into storytelling mode, you were off to the races. Your enthusiasm really shone through. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Home run, bro.
About the length: I had no problem with the length (no, you weren't rambling), but as someone who (for reasons which are WAY too long to go into here) still only has a dial-up connection, Thank God for UglyRedHonda's low-bandwidth recoding. That would really be a boon to those of us stuck in dial-up.
Keep it up, Wil. You're doing great.

One of the dlls that come with audiograbber helped my audacity to convert large wav files to MP3 files. Pretty easy to copy from one folder to another. And easy to figure out which folder to copy to.

I realize you have recorded it to audio file, but is there typed conversation? Because I'm deaf and I would like to be able to read the whole 30 mins on radio. Can anyone else help ? I would appericate it.

This? was awesome! You could have kept going as far as I am concerned, the 29:48 flew. Your voice was made for this...please keep them coming.

Wow...could you possibly have more of a "radio voice?" I predict that this will lead to a paycheck-generating formailization (is that a word?) of RFB. This exceeded my expectations, by alot. I laughed and I cried. It was better than CatsĀ®. I'll listen again and again.

Well done.

Love it! I'll echo everyone else and tell you that you have a great radio voice. In addition to having a great radio voice, you also have been able to transfer your voice to text so well over the years that it felt like I was reading a bunch of WWdN entries rather than listening to some podcast, even with all the f*ckups. Keep on 'casting! At least until the new year. I'll be getting an iPod for Christmas. ;)

Hi Wil! I just signed up for account to post comments, mainly because I felt like I had something to say finally. I've been lurking around since the original first incarnation of your site.

Anyways, I just wanted to put in my own $0.02 on the podcast, although it will echo most of the sentiment on here already. I thought it was brilliant. You do have a strong voice for radio and those 29 minutes went by so fast I felt like I wasn't getting enough. You do have a gift for storytelling, be it in long prose, on stage, your blog, or in podcasts.

Hope I didn't come off as some kind of slobbering fanboy. Good luck on your future endeavors and keep doing the podcasts! I'll keep downloading them and listening.

Nice first podcast, Wil. You did good.

Nearly 20 years ago, I used to watch you on STNG with my church's high school youth group (who were probably just a tad younger than you at the time). Now after 20 years, I've been catching up on what's been going on in your life. Great story. I think you sharing your life via blog and now podcast, the good and bad, is fantastic.

I'm about to launch my own podcast documenting being a dot-com CEO and then rebuilding from scratch. Sounds lame, hopefully it'll be more than that. www.weav.fm

Take care and best wishes.

- eric

RFB:0 = Brilliant! If that was a P.O.C. episode, I'd say concept proven with gusto!

Really enjoyed listening to the podcast. I look forward to the next one. :)

Wil,
As a radio broadcaster for over 35 years, I can tell that you have a natural talent for this. Being a successful actor doesn't mean that you can communicate in a radio/podcast format, but you did an excellent job in your first effort. I really enjoyed the "Slinky" stuff. I'm 57 and remember the commercial and the product vividly, since I had one of the original copper ones. I had to save up from my 50 cent a week allowance for one and had it until I moved out of my parents house in my 20's. One suggestion, keep it as fun and lighthearted as this first one. The Acme sketch is a great idea, and I'd really love to hear you talk with Anne on the cast.

Well done. Keep it up.

FABULOUS podcast!!!

I like the half hour length. Don't get too short.

You ROCK!!!

Great Podcast! Love all of it. Hey do you want any cool music for the show. I can send you some of my own mp3's of my band. Legendary Ausstralian Ska band, The Seen. Dont worry I am the copyright owner. I give you complete permission to use it for podcasts. Let me know. Raphael@segal.com.au

I absolutely loved this! You make it just too easy to get distracted from work!

I also really like your voice. I was a HUGE Star Trek fan when I was little and totally in love with you ;) but until now I only knew your german dubbing voice.

I will absolutely tune in to every ep from now on, thanks for the great time!

Wil,

I really enjoyed this. The half hour format is perfect! (But then, I have DSL. With dial up I guess it wouldn't be so perfect.) You have a very personable, storytelling voice. It's why I always looked forward to your audioblogging.

I would love to pimp my sites during subject pauses.

Wil,

really really enjoyewd the podcast, and hope its gonna be the first of many!

How great, Wil! I really enjoyed it. I even LOL'ed a couple times! The length was perfect. It didn't seem too long because it was all interesting... there weren't any moments where you were just filling time. I think if you cut it shorter you wouldn't get to talk about some things you probably really wanted to get in, and if you tried to get them in it would just seem rushed. As for WHAT you should talk about, I think that should be left up to you. For years I've enjoyed reading your blog, even when its about poker (which I'm not into), because of the way you tell the stories. You make them interesting, which will make the podcast interesting. I did really like the question and answer stuff. I'm going to have to think of a question or two for you! I'll be looking forward to the next episode!

wow!
That was amazing!
Like everyone else said, I think the podcast is an amazing experience and I can't wait till your next installment.

Also, the slinky song is AMAZING! I keep going back to it and playing it over and over again. :)

Thanks! :D

psst: Give me more!!!

Just another comment to say that I loved hearing this! It went by really fast, and was very interesting. Can't wait for your next one! =]

Hey, Wil,

Great to hear you instead of just read you. Good podcast, fun concept.
For hosting, try http://libsyn.com. They're cheap, and have no bandwidth caps.

Keep on 'casting!

Wil,
Ever since I listened to the audio version of Just A Geek I was hoping that you would jump onto the podcast bandwagon soon!
BTW, I had already read JAG but when I heard that you were doing the audio for it and adding extra stuff I had to have that too, and your reading was so good it didn't matter that I'd already read the book. :)
As to the length that your podcasts should be, I listen at work so the longer the better. I'm thinking that about 6 hours each should be good. *grin*
I'll be looking forward to the next episode of RFB!

one of the TWiT 3%!

ScreenCastsOnline, that show is how to podcast with a mac. Thought it might be useful, and make it a bit less painful. I can't wait to listen to the result.
Thanks!

Wil,
Definitely don't edit. We get a lot more of your innate sense of humor coming through that way. It makes you even more loveable.

God...slobbering fangirl...

Keep it real, man!

"That makes two stupid..three stupid fourstupidfivestupid MANY stupid things..."

You are AWESOME. I'm so looking forward to the next episode.

Blah, I suck. I listened to that part like 4 times and I still quoted it wrong.

I wanted to say thanks for telling us about Mike Doughty. I was a huge Soul Coughing fan back in the day and wondered what happened to them. Now I know.
Downloading his albums from iTunes at the moment while listening to Radio Burrito Episode 1.

I absolutely loved the podcast! Please don't limit the time to 10 minutes....30 min. was perfect.

I loved it!! The length is good, I don't want it shorter. I have to go listen to Episode One! Great idea Wil.

Love the podcast Wil! Don't worry about the length. As been said before, pick a topic and go with it.

Wil,
Loved the podcast! You should absolutely keep it up. And I think thirty minutes is the perfect amount. I listen to fireflytalk which is usually about an hour long, so don't worry about time. I'll definately be looking to see when I can download episode one. I got really excited for you when you had your great day and being from Wilmington, NC (lots of stuff is filmed here) I meet a lot of actors and actresses but I think I might go all drooly fangirl if I met Sean Maher too...or anyone Firefly related. Keep it up!
