I was just in Sydney, and I have to say i didn't see anyone drinking fosters, but I did see a fair amount drinking Victoria Bitter, which was pretty good.

Heck yeah. Guinness is even more awesome in its natural habitat.

After the Great Britain Beer Festival, in London, all the brewery presidents decided to go out for a beer. The guy from Corona sits down and says, "Hey Señor, I would like the world's best beer, a Corona."

The bartender dusts off a bottle from the shelf and gives it to him. The guy from Budweiser says, "I'd like the best beer in the world, give me 'The King Of Beers', a Budweiser."

The bartender gives him one. The guy from Coors says, "I'd like the only beer made with Rocky Mountain spring water, give me a Coors."

He gets it. The guy from Guinness sits down and says, "Give me a Coke."

The bartender is a little taken aback, but gives him what he ordered. The other brewery presidents look over at him and ask, "Why aren't you drinking a Guinness?"

The Guinness president replies, "Well, if you guys aren't drinking beer, neither will I."

Mudboy, you observed correctly. It would have been Victoria Bitter, some Toohey's New, maybe some Cooper's (which you can get some places in the States), some James Boag's, maybe Cascade...

I was living in Sydney during the 2000 Olympics. Just before the Games pubs everywhere installed Foster's taps, solely to cater for the tourists, since no Aussie was going to drink it. Once the Games were over they took the Foster's taps out immediately. 'Nuff said.

I recall a 1998 New Year's eve party where I realized that no matter how much Guinness I 'sipped', I never actually became sloppy drunk.

It was at the Bellagio in Las Vegas. Also the first year the hotel was open, and the party was incredible. I finished at least 8 mugs of Guinness from the tap, and not once did I regret it.

Something about it brings happiness, and doesn't make you pay for it afterwards. (Maybe the shrimp cocktails and crab cakes absorbed the excess toxins)...

And here I sit, deathly allergic to alcohol. (Fortunately, when you cook with it, the deadly stuff evaporates. Yay for Guinness-marinated steaks and Guinness and barely soup and Guinness chocolate volcano cakes!)

Corned Beef cooked in Guinnes is also yummy, though maybe a bit obvious.
I once read an article that said drinking it in moderation was better for you than beer, and could actually help your heart much like a couple of glasses of wine.

So true. Although I do not drink anymore, I do miss the occasional pint. I even took the tour of the brewery when I was there a couple years ago.

To Guinness fans : Do yourself a favor and try a Spaten Optimator. I did, and now I hardly ever go for Guinness when Optimator is available.

I used to have a neighbour who's beer of choice was Fosters. No Australian that she ever encountered understood that. No Canadians either, for that matter. "Australian for marketing" indeed. That's okay, Canadians don't really like Labatt Blue. We wanted to because Tom Cavanagh (pre-Ed) looked so cute on the lake with the dog in those commercials, but we couldn't.

Here's an idea:
"It's like comparing Fosters and Guinness" should be the new "It's like comparing apples and oranges."

I'd like to try some of those Guinness-marinated steaks and Guinness chocolate volcano cakes.

I live a 10 minute walk from the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin, if anyone ever comes to Ireland, its a place I recommend you visit!

I am half Australian (one quarter Columbian and one quarter other, aka American), my first beer was VB (as was second, and I believe third). My first beer in the US was Guiness...

And Corona Extra is good for those days when you don't want VB or Guiness, but only with a slice of lime...

We keep the good stuff all to ourselves.

Adding my cry of "Nooooooooooo!" to all the other Aussies here, Foster's is indeed Australian for all those things plus "F&%# me, this tastes like effluent!" This goes equally for VB, and most other beers from the Carlton and United Breweries stable.

There are a vast number of hugely better beers here - Boags, Coopers, Cascade, James Squire, Redback, etc. We even have and alcoholic lemonade (http://www.twodogs.com/tdabout/tdabout.htm) which craps all over these awful liquids!

I'm too young to comment on this. Hahaha!
