Geek Culture
I am a total nerd, and I love it.
I have always loved science and math.
My first computer was an Atari 400. I had a TI-99 4/A, and I wrote a
database for it, but couldn't save it, because I didn't have any tapes
for my tape drive. Well, that's not entirely true. I had a tape, but it
was "Off The Wall" and I didn't want to record over it.
See? Geek.
I wrote a sort of manifesto some years back, called "In Defense
of Nerds". If I can ever find it, I'll put it up here, but the thesis
was: Why do we, as a society, ridicule the children who use their brains
and excel in school, and reward the ones who can run the fastest, or hit
the hardest? Maybe it's because I was always picked last for kick ball,
and the dodge ball always seemed to find my face...I dunno.
The point is, I am a geek. I am very proud of that fact, and I have found
the following places to be populated with people of a like mind:
Slashdot - News
for nerds. Stuff that matters.
Kuro5hin - A place
for people who like to think.
Everything2
- This website has grown from being a very simple user-written encyclopedia
to a very complex online community.
