« Being Wil Wheaton | Main | He used...sarcasm, sir »

February 02, 2002

02.02.02

This has got to be the coolest day to write, this year. (If it isn't, I'm sure someone will point that out!)

I was watching A&E last night, and there was a show all about Jack Benny. I guess Jack Benny used to always refer to things the same way I do, calling them "the best", or "the most amazing", or whatever.

One of his friends said that Jack Benny would come in from a shoeshine, and say, "Would you look at this shine? This is the best shine, ever!". After eating a lunch, he'd say, "How about this ham and cheese? This has got to be the best ham and cheese I've ever had!"

Sounds like he had a mostly postive attitude, and really enjoyed life. I thought that was really cool.

So it came to my attention that today is Brent Spiner's birthday. Happy birthday, Brent! He must be at least as old as I am, now. Wow.

Neverland continues to be amazing. I will take some pictures and put a few of them up this coming week.

Jane White is getting some RAVE reviews. Check out Box Office Magazine, Entertainment Today, and Indie Rag. We are having more Jane screenings soon, so watch this space, or check the official Jane website for more info. I just love Jane White, from top to bottom. Everything about this movie makes me smile, and I hope you will all get a chance to see it.

I was sent a copy of DHTML and CSS for the World Wide Web, from peachpit press (Thank you, ALEXA!), and I've been reading it in all my free time. This site is going to be so badass, I can't even begin to describe it. Looking at my source makes me cringe, right now, but Roughy and I should have the whole thing fixed RSN. :)

Now, I am off to take lunch to my lovely wife, who is over-booked with clients today at the salon (yes, that's right. My wife is that good a hairdresser. They over-book, baby!).

Thought for today comes again from the Lama:

"Seeking blessings from outsiders is not right. Your life is on your own shoulders."

Have a good weekend, everyone.

I wanna see jane white, but I doubt I'll be able to catch it here. :( Stupid small cities that aren't home! (houston)

You know Lorretta Lynn named one of her sons Jack Benny. Saw part of Coal Miner's Daughter last nite.

And Brent Spiner is my age, 34. He just looks younger. Hope he has a hella-rad BD, anyway. Hella. Hella. Hella.

Karla

Posted by: Karla at February 2, 2002 12:59 PM

Not to be a voice of dissent, Mr. Wheaton, SIR!

But you misspelled "llama" too.

Who I presume is a relative of the moose.

Posted by: JSc at February 2, 2002 01:01 PM

"Seeking blessings from outsiders is not right...", but when a happy, unsought for blessing from an outsider occurs, well, count your blessings :-)

Your site is a lot of fun, Wil, and your Soapbox is terrific. Great folks!

Posted by: Bill Bekkenhuis at February 2, 2002 01:15 PM

Hey, that game.... grand theft auto 3, It's great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: androb at February 2, 2002 01:28 PM

Of course he could be referring to an entirely

different Lama. I'm taking a giant leap into

the land of assumption here, but maybe it is the

Dalai Lama :-P Ouch all that brain activity

hurts, I need to go lie down for a while. LOL

Posted by: Bleu at February 2, 2002 01:35 PM

Was that Brent Spiner as the greasy French guy Pierre on "Dude, Where's My Car?" or was that some other dude that looks like him?

Posted by: Jun at February 2, 2002 01:38 PM

Of course it's the Dalai Lama.

What, you're thinking llamas can talk?

What are you smoking, and where can I get some?

Posted by: Jun at February 2, 2002 01:40 PM

Jun,

Yes, that was him. It was uncredited, but appears in his IMDB listing.

Posted by: Kimberly3 at February 2, 2002 01:43 PM

Well llamas can talk in the Emperor's New Groove. HA HA lighten up it was supposed to be funny

Posted by: Bleu at February 2, 2002 02:02 PM

I always thought the Lama said "When you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness."

Posted by: Jon at February 2, 2002 02:08 PM

i think i'm a big old sap, but i do love it they way wil more often than not says "my wife" rather than "anne". i do hope when i'm married my husband stays as proud of me as wil is of anne.

aww.
s'all good.

Posted by: ems at February 2, 2002 02:08 PM

ems, I don't think you're being a sap. I, too, think it's sweet as well.

Now, if I can only get my fiancé's parents to stop calling me "his good friend"... lol

Posted by: Courtney at February 2, 2002 02:35 PM

courtney - heh i have the same problem!
yeah - i love how wil has turned out happy. makes me smile.

Posted by: ems at February 2, 2002 02:38 PM

umm.... according to imdb, brent spiner is 53, not 34...

Posted by: kre at February 2, 2002 02:57 PM

Jan,
Coulda been the Panchen Lama

My god, there's a whole herd 'o lamas out there.

-your resident smart ass (well, ok, one of many)

Posted by: synchronicity at February 2, 2002 03:39 PM

Jun, not Jan. Sorry.

Posted by: synchronicity at February 2, 2002 03:41 PM

And if you play SimCity 3000, there are lots of llamas.

Posted by: Don at February 2, 2002 04:05 PM

I'm disappointed at the inability of some people here to distinguish sarcasm from a serious correction.

Oh well.

I think I can deal.

Maybe.

Posted by: JSc at February 2, 2002 04:31 PM

Must be descendants of the llamas in SimCity 2000...

Speaking of Lamas, the Dalai Lama is going to be in town in April to give a talk and to dedicate a new temple in Bloomington.

Except this time, unlike the other times he's visited, the University is charging for the tickets... and you know, the words "Ticketmaster" and "Dalai Lama" just don't belong in the same sentence!

Posted by: kendoka at February 2, 2002 04:39 PM

HAPPY Birthday Brent from Victoria BC Canada!!

Posted by: Cindy Andrie at February 2, 2002 04:40 PM

I was jus' havin' a bit o' fun, meself.

Apologies to those who are followers of the Dalai Lama; I didn't mean any disrespect.

Posted by: Don at February 2, 2002 04:43 PM

First of all, happy birthday, Brent! Even though I don't know you and have no idea how old you are, you certainly are a fine thespian. I suspect 34 is about right... What a great entry today, Mr. Wil - glad to hear things are working well for you at present and yes I think that today's date does look pretty darn cool. V. good quote - just what I needed today. And Cindy, am fellow Can. - am in Toronto. Bet we have more snow than you? Will now go check info. about Jane White - we usually get new films here around the same time as N.Y., so hopefully I will get to it.

Posted by: duchess at February 2, 2002 04:45 PM

Oh, now that I've actually read about it, guess it is doing the festival circuit - if there are plans for it to be at the Toronto Film Festival in September, would love to know. Looks like...ahem..fun.

Jane White...hmm...And on Friday is Ethan Phillips...don't ask me why I could pull that up from memory, cause for the life of me I can barely remember the quadratic equation, and that is so much more important than Mr. Phillip's birthday...

I'll never forget it. It was very traumatic...

Posted by: Jon at February 2, 2002 08:35 PM

Jane White looks so cool, particularly based on who's in it (Colin Mochrie and Brad Sherwood are so awesome on "Who's Line Is It Anyway?").

3 posts on this entry and I failed to wish Brent Spiner a Happy Birthday! I can be so self-centered sometimes...

Posted by: Jon at February 2, 2002 08:40 PM

Since we're quoting the Dalai Lama I thought I'd share one of my favorite Dalai Lama quotes. "A wise man never feels out of place."

Posted by: CarolP at February 2, 2002 08:41 PM

How come Vanna White never does Wheel with a hook?

I think she should do a fucking show with a hook.

And an eye patch.

Why not?

It's a fucking PC thing, isn't it?

Yeah.

PC.

Don't you think the show would enjoy a ratings boost during Hook Week?

There aren't enough prosthetics on American game shows and it pisses me off.

Ooo.

No, I hadn't seen that eBay link for the Spudnuts postcard. Actually, I have seen that doughnut graphic before...

I used it on a site I did called "Cathedral of the Hydrogenated Snack Cake" like... six years ago. (Won CSotD in 1997, I think. Sure, it's no Bloggie, but it's still better than a Golden Globe).

Still... I wouldn't get too-too excited about the postcard except for the little blurb that says "can be redeemed for spudnuts/never been used."

THAT'S the part that interests me.

Some-WHERE there is some-ONE who will redeem that postcard for hot, fresh spudnuts.

I must own that card.

I WILL own that card.

And then I will find the person who will exchange it for doughnuts... er... spudnuts.

My life finally has meaning.

Happy Birthday Brent!

mojo pin said: "If you believe that quote then why do you always ask for mojo?"

That's an interesting question, mojo. Now, this is just my opinion, but I believe what the DL was referring to in that quote was seeking approval from other people...sort of like being a praise junkie. I don't suppose there's anything wrong with asking for a little extra luck or good thoughts once in awhile. It's a sign that we're not perfect and are not too proud to ask for support.

Gotta comment on the quote about blessings.

This year has been tough for me, basically, I am now a single mom of three after daddy decided he doesnt like the responsibility anymore. Searching for blessings this last year was hard, until my 7 year old decided to wise me up. As sappy as it is, she brought home a story called "our heros" from school. I started tearing up as she chose me. I really started to cry when i saw the reasons. Basically in a nut shell she wrote, that no matter how little time mommy has, its always special. And no matter how much we need, mommy always finds it. Mommy is beautiful, and I love her. It ended with her saying she wants to be like me when she grows up.

All I gotta say to that is... TALK ABOUT BLESSINGS !

Actually all parents (step, adopted, whatever) who aren't self serving wastes are kool in my book.

I love what my mom told me to explain my adoption and to tell her bio child to sod off after pulling the superiority crap.

>> Where the hell does this stuff come from?

Apart from the occasional overindulgence in beer, my youth was remarkably drug-free and rather mundane.

My mother smoked when I was in the womb as was recommended by most obstetricians in 1966.

Maybe she partook of a little devil-weed as well, but I don't think she ever dropped acid.

Hi, mom!

My dad lived in Garden Grove and we did take more than a few trips to my favorite ride... Adventure Thru Inner Space.

http://www.sdwebsite.com/atis/sounds.htm

Now...

This ride has long since been paved over and replaced by Star Tours.

Why?

Because the Disney Corporation knows full well there are thousands of fucked up mutants like myself who are victims of the shrinking process employed daily at Adventure Thru Inner Space and it is a legacy they just don't want to deal with.

What happens when you shrink a six year-old to the size of an atom?

Over.

And over.

And over again?

Son, that's going to curdle the chickpeas in any young American's soup bucket.

Throw cherry sour balls and popcorn into the mix and you have a recipe for disaster.

I was supposed to take medication, but I never did.

It's hard to focus.

Michael Eisner -- cocksucker that he is -- owes me a living.

Spudnuts-I can hardly breathe 'cause I'm laughing so hard on that last bit. And to work in a vintage Disneyland ride-I will no longer be able to think of that one again without Spudnuts coming to mind.

I have only myself to blame for asking in the first place...

Posted by: Jon at February 4, 2002 01:05 PM

Sorry I misled you. Brent wasn't in Tenenbaums, he had a role in I AM SAM. My mistake. See you were paying attention. I apologize. Please don't shrink me into an atom.
