« SA v. FARK | Main | By your command » February 11, 2002KITTEarlier today, I posted the Greatest Picture, EVER! There was much discussion about Knight Rider, and I have wondered this all day: Am I the only person who was crestfallen upon finding out that the voice of KITT was not, in fact, the voice of the car, but was, in truth, the voice of actor William Daniels? When Bill was president of SAG, I had lots of meetings with him, because I am on the Board of Directors, and was part of our TV and Theatrical negotiating team. When I would have a meeting with Bill, I'd call Anne, and tell her, "I won't make it for dinner tonight. I have a meeting with KITT." And she'd say, "Is it in his office? Or is he meeting you around back in 5, buddy?" Continuing the trip down Knight Rider lane...back in the old days, when there was only one Universal Studios, and the main focus of the whole experience was the tour, not the damn animal shows and gift shops...well, okay, it was the gift shops, but not as transparently as it is now... But I digress. Back in the day, at Universal Studios, they had a KITT car parked in this area where you could go and sit in it, and, I am not making this up, talk to KITT! You could ask KITT all sorts of questions, and while you waited in line, you could hear the questions asked, and the answers given out by none other than KITT HIMSELF! So people would sit in KITT, and ask all sorts of questions about the show, and "what did you do in episode [whatever]?", and all sorts of technical questions about the specifics of his design, etc. I so badly wanted to get into the car, and say, "Hey, KITT, I was wondering, do you ever cut loose when the people go home? I mean, tell me the truth. You can kick the A-Team Van's ass, right? Do you ever just head on over to the backlot and do donuts, just because you can?" But I totally chickened out, and, when I got up there, I froze, and asked, "What's your top speed, KITT?" The sad thing is, I can't even remember what the answer was. update: 8:41 PM PST: Cherish, a cool girl and helpful soapbox mod, just sent me this picture of her, sitting in KITT! Second. Best. Picture. EVER. Rock. Comments
Mr. Wheaton (SIR!), I hate to break it to you, but C3PO wasn't actually the robot, either. Posted by: JSc at February 11, 2002 07:37 PMI used to watch that when I was a kid staying at my grandparents house... Posted by: JenniferInLubbock at February 11, 2002 07:37 PMI think R2D2 was, though Posted by: JSc at February 11, 2002 07:38 PMI just wish they hadn't cut up all the cars at the end of the series. I used to wish I could drive one of those things when i was a kid. Especially the hard top convertible ones... Posted by: seafoodgod at February 11, 2002 07:38 PMShut up, Jon! He totally was! Crestfallen? Hell no! He's one of my favorite actors (no offense), and he always seems so prim and proper, that to realize he took on the roll of a CAR blew me away! -- and then I realized why I had a crush on a car :-) Posted by: jill at February 11, 2002 07:39 PMShhhh.... You're letting everyone know my secret identity! (tm) I am JSc! Evil incarnate! Hard and crusty and unlovable! And stuff.... Posted by: JSc at February 11, 2002 07:40 PMTalk to KITT?!?!!? I missed a lot, growing up in Cleveland... We didn't even have the Rock Hall or good old Drew back then. But hey, the Browns were good. Posted by: kendoka at February 11, 2002 07:44 PMHeha my friend's father made an audio tape of KITT and played it in the car for my friend and her older brother and actually convinced them THEY had a talking car too. Posted by: Flann at February 11, 2002 07:44 PMDidn't C3PO introduce himself as "C3PO, Human Cyborg, relations." If he's a cybernetic organism, then doesn't he have a meat brain with a partially or completely electronic body? p.s. I wanted a KITT car, until everyone starting modding their cars like that... and we all saw how desperately uncool it was. Don't you find that Mr. Baywatch looks micro thin in that picture? Was he on drugs? Whew. What a concept. A talking car. I often wonder what my car would say back to me after listening to me talk to it for all the years I've owned it...
I, for some reason, never realized you were on the board of directors of SAG. Holy bejeezus, I think I just passed a gallstone. What does that entail, exactly? How does that happen? How much can you tell us? You didn't ask KITT if he's ever tried to kill Dr. Ehrlich?!? Posted by: Rob Matsushita at February 11, 2002 07:48 PMJsC=Jon?? *lower lip tremble* no... No.. I WON'T believe it.. I can't... whoa... Ok, I'm done... Major sugar rush tonight... who knew there was that much sugar in grape juice?? Wil, WUSS!! Kidding, kidding... I could offer a comparison, but I don't have any... I'm just a boring person who wonders what you call it when you mix grape juice and vodka... I want to try it, but I want to know what it's CALLED first... help?? Posted by: Jessica at February 11, 2002 07:50 PMYou know Wil, at least you had a chance to sit in the car--some of us kids could only dream about it. WB started replaying all the old episodes a couple of years back at seven o'clock in the morning. I used to watch the beginnings to see if I could remember the episode before taking off to class. You know what the sad thing was--when classes ended in June and I could actually go out on a Tuesday night and drink my ass off not having to worry about teaching with a hang over the next day, I actually got up and watched the damn thing with a bowl of cereal feeling like I was twelve again. Ahhh, the nostalgia. Posted by: thescribe at February 11, 2002 07:52 PMis it a Purple Cow? I don't know. Let's ask KITT! Posted by: billder at February 11, 2002 07:54 PMThere were these two guys down the street from me when I was growing up who had a car painted to look just like the one in Starsky and Hutch. I was convinced it was the real deal for the longest time, and was devastated when my dad wouldn't let me accept their offer to take me for a ride in it... Posted by: kendoka at February 11, 2002 07:54 PMDid you know? Did you know that if you rearrange the letters in the name Wil Wheaton, you get this: Wil on wheat. Yes, you know that is funny. If you don't think that that is funny, then go eat some sausage on the new Bakula Bastard Rooster Roaster, much better than a crappy George Foreman grill that will break if you throw it into a toilet from a 7 story building! Remember, Bakula Bastard Rooster Roaster - you're rooster will be happy you chose the Bakula Bastard Rooster Roaster! Grape juice + vodka = pretty rough. Try some whiskey and orange soda instead. I don't know what it's called, but it's some smooth drinkin'. Posted by: JSc at February 11, 2002 07:55 PMOf course...looking back on it, that was probably a GOOD thing... Posted by: kendoka at February 11, 2002 07:56 PMI have a partially meat brain I keep it in the kitchen with some fava beans and a nice chianti mmmmmmm Posted by: jbay at February 11, 2002 07:57 PMGrape juice + vodka... If you're feeling strapped but fancy, you could call it wine. Posted by: billder at February 11, 2002 07:57 PM>>Didn't C3PO introduce himself as "C3PO, Human Cyborg, relations." Actually, I think it was, "C3PO, Human/Cyborg Relations." In other words, he was what my husband would call an Liason Officer. As a protocol 'droid, he could not only translate between the two cultures (would 'droids be considered to have a culture?) but between the languages as well. Given his skill in translation, he was also (as per the specs of the make and model) a human/human translator; quite a useful skill, given that HSR/pd's can be found on ambassadorial or governmental ships. None of which pertains to the thread at hand. 8-D Posted by: whisper at February 11, 2002 07:57 PMthanks for clearing that up, whisper (; Posted by: kendoka at February 11, 2002 07:59 PMHerbie the Love Bug would have taken care of Kitt in pretty short order, let me tell you what. Posted by: jerhanner at February 11, 2002 08:02 PMYeah, but can he speak Bocce? Posted by: wil at February 11, 2002 08:04 PMdon't forget his Austrian cousin, Khitty Khitty Bang Bang. now THAT'S the car I wanted when I was little. Posted by: billder at February 11, 2002 08:04 PMIs it just me, or did this entry get a whole lot longer... Posted by: JenniferInLubbock at February 11, 2002 08:05 PMI always thought that CP30 introduces himself as "CP30: Human-Cyborg Relations." As in he specializes in the relations between humans and cyborgs (i.e. he's a translator). But I could be wrong. <soapbox> Speaking of which, Wil: I don't know if you ever get a chance to rap with George Lucas, but if you ever do, do me a favor and tell him there are millions of screaming, teeth gnashing fans out here that would gladly pay $25 for a crappy, thrown-together-with-bailing-wire-and-bubble-gum DVD version of Star Wars NOW, and like $50 for a really-cool-ultra-extended-dance-remix version of same, sometime in the far far away future. He's like totally missing the boat here. BTW, Wil, that IS hands down the BEST PICTURE EVER. Bob. Posted by: Bob Curtis at February 11, 2002 08:05 PMThe question isn't so much if he can speak it...but can he play it? 8-D Posted by: whisper at February 11, 2002 08:05 PMThank you JinL -- I didn't see two thirds of it my first time through either! Posted by: jill at February 11, 2002 08:06 PMYAY!! I'm not the only one... /me dances Posted by: whisper at February 11, 2002 08:07 PMThis has stayed on topic for too long. So when's the next RFB broadcast? Posted by: JSc at February 11, 2002 08:09 PMDEWD, I totally have a pic of me sitting in KITT when I was a kid!!!!! I asked.... Q:What is your favorite color? Q:Do ya ever get tired of running Michael around? Totally, the answer to that last one was copped out...BUT STILL!!! Out of EVERYTHING at Universal Studios, that is one of the most intact memories, the other was the A Team Van thingw here some big ass burly dude lifted it off of two of it's tires with his bare hands!! Oh yeah and the giant black phone and the Jaws ride....Ahhh!!! Back in the day!! Posted by: Cherish at February 11, 2002 08:12 PMokay, C3P0 was always calling himself "human cyborg realtions" and a bot. anyway, who cares, it was a guy in a suit. Posted by: Ayngil at February 11, 2002 08:17 PMRFB is RIP, until I can get some technical support from the guys at Winamp who had hooked me up with a server there. I've emailed them, but I haven't heard back, and I let my live365 account lapse. :( Posted by: wil at February 11, 2002 08:20 PMHey, Wil do you ever wonder how far around the world your posse reaches. I wouldn't mind knowing myself. Personaly I live in Canada, Born in Holland. That's a bummer, Wil. Posted by: kendoka at February 11, 2002 08:24 PMHey! I remember that setup. I visited universal waaay back, and I wanted to sit in KITT. But I vaguely remember the comment from my parents "We're not waiting in THAT line so you can sit in a car!" Looking back, the line was pretty damn long. Posted by: Ika at February 11, 2002 08:25 PMArt; I hope you get a lot of responses on this one, it would be great to learn where everyone is from! Posted by: jill at February 11, 2002 08:26 PMI'm still jealous... Cedar Point wasn't even cool back then. We had the Berenstein Bears wandering around the park. They didn't talk at all, and they were definitely not as cool as KITT... Posted by: kendoka at February 11, 2002 08:28 PMThey are, I fear, missing out on a huge opportunity. Instead of Ask Jeeves, they could do away with the old duffer, and get the car to do the business. Ask KITT. Now we're running on gas. Posted by: Patrick Bateman at February 11, 2002 08:29 PMShame on you, Wil! The answer was: "You'll shoot your eye out kid! Ho, ho, ho...." Posted by: Chris at February 11, 2002 08:29 PMArt-- Born in NJ, currently attending school in CT. USA all my life. Posted by: Flann at February 11, 2002 08:29 PMGood. We're still off topic.... Born in Milwaukee, moved to Cedarburg (15 miles north of Milwaukee) when I was in 7th grade, spent 3 years in Madison thinking I wanted to become a chemical engineer, spent another 3 years in Cedarburg attending UW-Milwaukee, and have recently moved to Columbia, SC for grad school. Also, I'm on the cusp between Taurus and Aries, my favorite color is.... Posted by: JSc at February 11, 2002 08:30 PMFlann-- The Black Beauty can kick KITT's ass. Posted by: Fred Fowler at February 11, 2002 08:33 PMArt: Born down Wil's way, Santa Monica to be exact ... now living Somewhere in Northern California(tm).
You want the coolest car - like apart from KITT - the one in Automan that the little dude cursor 'drew' to specification. *ponders* although it did not take to corners too well ... and pity about it disappearing as soon as the toasters get plugged in ... Tish Posted by: Tish Boom at February 11, 2002 08:40 PMArt: Waterloo, Ontario, Canada... represent! Posted by: elder at February 11, 2002 08:42 PMooo - and the deLorien with the MrFusion upgrade :D but he didn't talk :( Tish Posted by: Tish Boom at February 11, 2002 08:44 PM
OH well... it's late here (11:50 EST)... been at the workstation ALLLLL day.... Time to sleep, methinks. Posted by: SpaceWriter at February 11, 2002 08:50 PMI remember KITT from my childhood days here in New Zealand, I recall it was a Pontiac Firebird Trans Am 2000, 1.8m (that's a childhood memory) Goddammit, I hate being the baby of the board. All I remember of KITT is how it came in to Celebrity Deathmatch to save David Hasselhoff from John Tesh. Goddamn bastard Tesh. That was C-3PO, whom I was referencing earlier. Chris: you get a cookie for catching the "A Christmas Story" implications of the post. I was very seriously trying to work in a "Little Orpan Annie Secret Decoder Ring" reference, but I just couldn't find a place for it. Oh! A-L-W-A-Y-S D-R-I-N-K Y-O-U-R O-V-A-L-T-I-N-E hehehe Posted by: wil at February 11, 2002 08:50 PMOvaltine is so tasty. Good-for-you chocolate! Posted by: KJB at February 11, 2002 08:55 PMWil, Seriously, was that whole 4-man bobsled team thing real? It's hurting my head. Art: Ottawa, Canada: Where it was -29 Celcius with windchill today. Brr! And here I was just enjoying the global warming non-winter. : ( Posted by: Gaea at February 11, 2002 08:56 PMKJB, Try Ghirardelli hot chocolate mixes! They mix with milk and are to die for! Oh. But wait... Ghirardelli is kinda tough for the decoder ring, isn't it? It's a code unto itself! Posted by: SpaceWriter at February 11, 2002 08:57 PMooooo - Willy-babe - how much into character did you get while being Wes - I mean - did you smile for days if there was a script where Wes did something cool ??? that is my KITT-question for you... Tish Posted by: Tish Boom at February 11, 2002 08:57 PMSpacewriter: I have tried those Ghiradelli mixes. They rule, but are not filled with lots of healthy vitamins and nutrients. Hmm.... (too much potential). heheheh couldn't RESIST!!! hehehehehehe!!! Cool as HELL! Posted by: Cherish at February 11, 2002 09:04 PMto Spacewriter and KJB... three words (and three letters ...) Dutch Drinking Chocolate - O M G !!!
Well, I don't rely on them for my daily health fix... that's what the collection of fruits and vegies is for . But, on a cold, blustery night, they do hit the spot, especially when consumed in front of a nice little log fire, and a bit of nice music playing in the stereo. Even better if it's snowing out! Posted by: SpaceWriter at February 11, 2002 09:06 PMAhhh, yes, but does this Dutch taste sensation still offer a decoder ring after all this time? Methinks not. haHA! don't know that the Dutch have decoder rings ... maybe you get a miniture clog on a keyring or something ...
No, but if you get the good Dutch drink in Amsterdam, I'm sure they would have some nice OTHER goodies on offer. Forget the decoder pen. ;) Posted by: Chris at February 11, 2002 09:10 PMNo decoder rings, but now they've got all sorts of cheesy commercials to get a new generation of kids to drink their Ovaltine! I always thought it had a weird aftertaste, myself.... Posted by: kendoka at February 11, 2002 09:14 PMThey've got decoder doohickies! I've seen them on the can! Ovaltine is as goofy and subversive as ever. Mmmm, More Ovaltine, Please! Posted by: KJB at February 11, 2002 09:16 PMWil! I thought I was the *only* person who remembered that about Universal Studios! I remember being freaked out about seeing KITT there just answering questions. To tell you the truth I can't even remember what I asked him. As a side note, I also remember on that trip to U-Studios, I met some cheesey guys in Transformer suits. It sucked. The guy wasn't even a good Starscream. Remembering back on it, they actually looked like those corny robots from the Power Rangers. Ok, off my memory lane trip. Time for bed. Posted by: AricDanyul at February 11, 2002 09:22 PMMilo is crunchier... and if you add it to icecream with a spoon of instant expresso - can keep you up for two days straight. But I believe that the USA does not know of this... oh and has more vits then Ovaltine :P Tish Posted by: Tish Boom at February 11, 2002 09:24 PMOff the subject here... but did anyone hear about that guy who is facing up to 20 years in prison for using the airplane bathroom during the last 30 minutes of the flight? The sky marshalls arrested him, and made the rest of the passengers put their hands on their heads until they were docked at the gate. Does this worry anyone? Posted by: kendoka at February 11, 2002 09:25 PMGuess he had too much Ovaltine during the flight Posted by: kendoka at February 11, 2002 09:26 PMKendoka, don't get me started. :) Posted by: wil at February 11, 2002 09:30 PMI remember walking past KITT when I was 11 years old. I wanted to ask him if he ever gets tired of Michael sitting in there and stinking up the car when he passed gas. My mom pulled me out of the line when I told her my question. My mom always did hold me back. Posted by: Melli at February 11, 2002 09:31 PM*grrrrrs* I used to be grateful that I didn't live in a police state...but now that the Prez is cutting funding to healthcare to fund his undeclared war, I'll probably die anyway. d: Yeah, that's disturbing. So is Yancy Butler, but in a different way. Posted by: KJB at February 11, 2002 09:34 PMMelli, Isn't it like all mothers to suppress us just at the point of ultimate knowledge? You had the answer to THE question within your grasp when BOOM. Repression rears its ugly head. You know, Melli, you could totally do some sort of really offensive art installation that the right-wingers would want to ban, and you could totally blame your mom. "This is an expression of my mother's repression of my need to ask about Michael Knight's farts" Posted by: wil at February 11, 2002 09:37 PMDo I actually become Smelly or is it just smelli? I am concerned. When I add an "s" to Chris it just looks silly. Wil, Wil, then when my art is banned everywhere and I am a starving artist I will have to run to my mom to feed me and clothe me... She would enjoy the irony in all that. Posted by: Melli at February 11, 2002 09:41 PMHey, there were starving people in Africa when Mariah Carey made her bad movie and when Madonna made her 5 bad movies. What's the big difference? Posted by: Chris at February 11, 2002 09:42 PMBritney Spears gets to make bad movies because she is SatanSpawn (tm). Posted by: KJB at February 11, 2002 09:43 PMHeck, there are starving people in the United States, and the President is still pulling more money from everywhere to start trouble in other countries. Posted by: kendoka at February 11, 2002 09:44 PMDifference is that I now want to make a bad movie. Posted by: Melli at February 11, 2002 09:45 PMI thought that was Adam Sandler's excuse. Posted by: Chris at February 11, 2002 09:45 PMReally now? To the best of my knowledge, Kitt was never equiped with the ability to smell. Unlike Data's emotion chip, they never did have an episode where Kitt was given a special device to smell with. (Please correct me if I am wrong.) However, if Mr Danials was stuffed under the dashboard or in the back seat with a mike during the filming, then there could be a problem. Kitt would have been a fun car most the time, but not one I would want to make out in! Posted by: Keith in Montana at February 11, 2002 09:46 PMYeah, but can he speak Bocce? Posted by: wil on February 11, 2002 08:04 PM Wow, Wil. That took balls. Posted by: Roughy at February 11, 2002 09:46 PMdiscussions on chocolate drinks, toilets, farts and modern art ... all in all a good time +++ QUICK POLL +++ (1) How many women think that Legolas (Orlando Bloom) is too sexy??? (2) How many men are sick of hearing woman harp on about 'the damn elf' ??? btw KJB & I have plans to kidnap him and start a male harem...
Why not? Did Kitt seem to you to be a back-seat driver type personality? Posted by: Chris at February 11, 2002 09:48 PMvery true...(Michale is making out with a woman in the car) I grew up in Columbus, Ohio. So instead of a talking car, I spent the night with Jaws. What a night that was being only 10 years old and sleeping only 3 feet away from this creature. Prolly explains why I'm so weird.. well in part. -K Posted by: MissKittyFantastico at February 11, 2002 09:49 PMPersonally, Tish, it was all over for me when I found out that the blond hair was a wig. Posted by: Chris at February 11, 2002 09:49 PMHmm... Interesting MissKitty. I actually used to sleep with a blow-up plastic human-sized dinosaur that I used to...well... nevermind. Posted by: Chris at February 11, 2002 09:51 PMA wig, yes. But let's not forget, he had a mohawk underneath it. Posted by: KJB at February 11, 2002 09:52 PMmy Knight Rider anecdote... A few years back, I spent a year volunteering in a small mountain town in Ecuador. I had a chance to spend a week with an indigenous family who lived way out in the middle of nowhere (I mean the bus drops you off on the side of the road, then you hike for 5 miles into the backcountry, turn left at the cows, right at the chickens, you get the idea.) This community has virtually no contact with the outside world, save for hiking into town for the farmer's market once a week. Anyway, one family in this small community had a television set. So once a week, the whole village would gather at that family's home to watch their favorite program...none other than Knight Rider! All the girls had a crush on David Hasselhoff, and everyone thought that most people in the USA had cars like KITT. Globalization at its best, folks. :-) Posted by: gringa latina at February 11, 2002 09:53 PMWil- hey - he had 'good hair' at least once! I have seen proof! anyway ... we might have just as much luck in capturing the actual character as we do the actor ... although I do have a sister living in London now... *ponders* Tish Posted by: Tish Boom at February 11, 2002 09:56 PMHmm... I remember the Girl Scout sleepovers at COSI. I think the last one I went to was in 1985, and we got this run-down bus with an overactive heater that couldn't go over 45mph without feeling like it was going to shimmy itself to pieces right there on I-71... Oh yeah, we also got snails to take home with us. Posted by: kendoka at February 11, 2002 09:58 PMBritney Spears can make bad movies because she's smokin' hot. Posted by: wil at February 11, 2002 10:00 PMOf course, that doesn't explain why I get to make bad movies. Posted by: wil at February 11, 2002 10:03 PMShe was just on Jay Leno out here, so if you're lucky you might get to see her in an hour or two. Posted by: kendoka at February 11, 2002 10:03 PMYou mean Wm Daniels voice in the play 1776 in the late 1960's was done offstage by... by a car? Far out, man! Posted by: Don at February 11, 2002 10:06 PMInteresting point, Wil. I guess the reason why you get to make bad movies is your unending quest for another anthopomorphized automaton that can speak Bocce.. Posted by: Chris at February 11, 2002 10:07 PMThe *binary* language of Bocce, no less. Posted by: KJB at February 11, 2002 10:10 PMOr was it the binary language of moisture converters... crap. Posted by: KJB at February 11, 2002 10:11 PMIt was the binary language of moisture vaporators, I think... Posted by: kendoka at February 11, 2002 10:12 PMShame on you, KJB. The answer is: "You'll shoot your eye out kid. Ho, Ho, Ho..." Posted by: Chris at February 11, 2002 10:13 PMDon't ask me why I remember that at 1:23 in the morning.. but I'm working on a paper, so there are lots of random bits of trivia popping up... Posted by: kendoka at February 11, 2002 10:13 PMBut Santa wasn't the only one who told him that, Chris... Didn't his teacher laugh at him while dressed as the Wicked Witch of the West in his little daydream? Posted by: kendoka at February 11, 2002 10:15 PMNo turkey! No turkey leftovers! No turkey sandwiches! No turkey soup! Posted by: kendoka at February 11, 2002 10:17 PMDeck the hars wis bowrs of horry Actually, yes, while accompanied by his mother in a Jester's suit. Posted by: Chris at February 11, 2002 10:19 PMI'm so getting nailed for that. Posted by: KJB at February 11, 2002 10:20 PMYou know it's a real shame that whole families can be torn apart by something as simple as wild dogs. Posted by: Chris at February 11, 2002 10:21 PMAustralian free-to-air has decided to start running Enterprise... Dear God, or Q, whatever, don't let them shove it to late night and then make me to the video store to see the end of the series, like DS9 and Voyage that free-to-air still have yet to finish. oh, and a new series of Bab5 wont go astray either. Ta much, I'll try and be good, well, yeah... Tish Posted by: Tish Boom at February 11, 2002 10:21 PMI loved the lamp... ("Fra-jee-lay...must be Italian!") Gauntlet. Thrown. Posted by: wil at February 11, 2002 10:27 PMHey Wil! Second post in 2 days, I must be improving :) This is one of the things I love about this site...because I can relive memories that I had forgotten all about! I, too, got to sit in KITT, when an Auto show came to my hometown, Ottawa, Ontario, and they had KITT! I have a picture (somewhere) of my little brother and I sitting in the car, and...I remembered that I was SOOOO wanting to push the Turbo Boost button and test that bastard out hehe ;) I didn't though :) And he (yes, I refuse to believe it was an actor...it was just that they BASED KITTs voice on William Daniels because they thought it sounded good on St. Elsewhere!) talked to me too :) Thanks again, Wil, for bringing me back down memory lane ;) Jay Posted by: Jay at February 11, 2002 10:29 PMThat's a scary gauntlet, dude. These tracks are side by side, and those blast marks are too precise for their weapons. But if they [something something, cut me some slack, it's late], then they'd know that we gotthe droids from them, and that would lead them back...HOME! Wait, Luke! It's too dangerous! Daaa-dahhhh-da-dahhh-da-da-daaaa-daaaahhhhh....da-da-da-daaahhhh-da-da-da-da-da-da-daaahahhhhhh.... Good night, monkeys. See you tomorrow. When I was 6, my mother took me to Anaheim, and we went to Universal. I didn't get the KITT experience there, but...tell me SOMEONE remembers the BattleStar Galactica Space Battle part of the tour! :) That was awesome :) Jay It's a MAJOR award! Fra-gil-ay...it must be Italian! Posted by: Jay at February 11, 2002 10:35 PMI step up to your challenge, Mr. Wheaton. "What do you want little boy?" "What is that thing?" YEAH! :) Night. Posted by: wil at February 11, 2002 10:42 PMDavid Hasselhoff is actually planning a new Knight Rider series that will be called "Super Knight Rider 3000". This will be the 3rd attempt to bring KR back after the two failed attempts in the '90s. Hasselhoff will return as Michael Knight, but he plays the older guy role, while some other person plays the driver of the new car. Hopefully William Daniels will return as the voice of KITT. IMDB even lists the upcoming series. This site has some articles about it: Posted by: John at February 11, 2002 10:45 PMThe Apocalypse is coming. Posted by: KJB at February 11, 2002 10:49 PM~300 mph Posted by: -M at February 11, 2002 10:53 PMApocalpyse? Nah dude this is so cool!! Look at all the '80s stuff that is back in vogue. A new Knight Rider series, Mr. T commericials, ALF commercials, it doesn't get better then this. Heck there's even an A-Team and Greatest American Hero movie in the works! But I pity the actor that tries to replace Mr. T as B.A. ;) Funny how KITT would always accelerate, but never hit a top speed huh? Especially in super pursuit mode. :) Posted by: John at February 11, 2002 11:05 PMI have nothing against KITT. It's that Hasselhoff dillweed I'm worried about. Speaking of ALF... there he is! I'm so pleased they've brought him back into the fold, especially into such a flexible genre as the 10-10-220 ads. K, few things to say... 1) Melb Australia 2) Tish, don't trust the TV networks, you know they'll screw you, just like with DS9 and Voyager (but with Voyager no-one cared!) We've seen Enterprise to latest episodes, been getting them off the internet *cough cough*. If you want to know where, email me and I'll give you the details 3) Help required please?! WHERE can i find a mp3 file of the A-team theme song. I think it's been running practically constantly in my brain for the last few months and I want to know if it is, in fact, the A-team theme song. 4) You're a god damn blood sucking vampire Michael, ooh you wait til mom finds out! 5) Cherish - power convertors - Har!! :) *sigh* Anyone else a dork like me and watch Star Wars like at least once a year? Posted by: firemage at February 11, 2002 11:14 PMfiremage, I have the A-Team song, but I honestly don't remember where I downloaded it from. Go to Stephen J. Cannell's website, and look in the "Fan Links" section. There are links to several fan made A-Team websites there, and one of them should have the A-Team song. http://www.cannell.com Posted by: John at February 11, 2002 11:21 PMMore like once a month, firemage. Posted by: firemage at February 11, 2002 11:43 PMMmmm, hot fudge.... Posted by: KJB at February 11, 2002 11:46 PMKnight Rider - I've always remembered an episode where KITT was heavily damaged for some reason, in fact it seemed he was a total write off. Then Michael was introduced to KITT rebuilt and improved, with extra features such as the ability to become a convertable. Or did I dream it? Nobody I know seems to remember that happening. Battlestar Galactica - Why on Earth did Universal mask out the top and bottom of the picture for the pilot epside's DVD release? That doesn't magically make it was a widescreen movie!!! Anyways, anyone heard further developments on the new Battlestar series that was approved a couple of years ago? Posted by: DVD Plaza at February 11, 2002 11:47 PMBack in the 80's in Bethesda Maryland there was this guy who drove an exact replica of KITT around. The interior, the steering wheel, the red light up front...everything. No, I never did see any chicks in the front seat. Kman Posted by: kman at February 11, 2002 11:58 PMHEY WIL: I just want you to know what happened to the real "KITT" car...and no, that one you encountered at Universal Studios is *not* it, sorry. The interview was conducted in their home, at the time in Sherman Oaks, just off the 405 freeway (assuming that they, like most other showbiz folks, have since moved to more tonier digs, more secluded digs, or out of the city altogether), and get this, Wil!! The fireplace mantle in the family room of David's home was the front end of KITT!!! I kid you not, seriously, and when David finally joined his wife towards the end of my interview, he was like a little kid, wanted to show it off for me, the buttons, the lights, the noise and all. So there you have it, KITT's on fire, and I'm not. MissMissy (to you) Posted by: MissMissy at February 12, 2002 12:19 AMHey Bob Curtis... RE: George Lucas and his aversion to DVDs: As far as I know, and this is all hearsay, George Lucas has personal reasons for not releasing things on the DVD format. Apparently he was developing a type of temporary dvd that would stop working after about 25 viewings, but was beaten out by the company that originally developed the permanent DVDs we have today. So Georgie is bitter about losing out to the DVD people, and has little to no incentive for releasing his catalogue of movies on their format. I'm just annoyed that we won't see Indiana Jones or the original Star Wars eps on DVD any time soon. Grr. Boo, hiss! Firemage: wheeeee! Lost Boys reference! You made my night! I watched Tron for the very first time last night (I know, I know... I was a deprived child), and all I could see was the grandpa from Lost Boys (Barnard Hughes). "Something I never could stomach about Santa Carla, all the damn vampires!" Well, him and the Dude ("Hey, careful, man, there's a beverage here!")... and the Scarecrow. Question: am I the only one who forever associates Bruce Boxleitner with the "Scarecrow and Mrs. King"? Maybe it's wrong to ask this forum though, considering the enormous sci-fi contingent here. :-) Hey, I never got into Babylon 5 okay? I mean, the captain guy was the Scarecrow. How could I take it seriously? :-) Posted by: Mandy at February 12, 2002 12:20 AMOh yeah, Knight Rider was cool. Especially the music. Posted by: Mandy at February 12, 2002 12:21 AMPsst... as a current employee of Universal Studios (giving tours that no one cares about anymore, in fact), I can safely say that WATERWORLD is the main focus of the experience now. That, and uh... Big Fat Liar. Yup. HuttonGirl > Too cool! Does it still talk? :D Wil > I remember asking KITT two questions: "What's your top speed, KITT?" Heh heh. That's it, KITT? (Well, that was back in the 80's.) Posted by: Paulo at February 12, 2002 12:53 AMI too remember 'meeting' KITT at Universal Studios (are we THAT old?!). KITT never had a top speed though. At least never shown in any episode. KITT was always accelerating, especially during super pursuit mode. Posted by: John at February 12, 2002 01:47 AMRE: Battlestar (according to many sources)... Fox was going to bring back the series with Boxey (did you know his adult name is Troy?) as the main character, and about a half-dozen young unknowns playing young Colonial warriors fighting Cylons. The show was slated to ignore the original story line, ignore the original cast members (though Noah Hathaway was approached and "lunched" with producer Tom DeSanto to reprise his role as Boxey/Troy, Fox wanted someone else ), and jus' be a bunch of 20-somethings shooting at aliens, with soap-opera like relationships between cast members. Fox was betting the store on director Bryan Singer, but when he left to do X-Men 2, Fox lost interest. And due to all kinds of ownership issues, it's doubtful that anyone else will pick up the show. So I go to bed at what is a decent hour for working people here in the Eastern Time Zone, and I wake up to find a new blog about Dr. Mark Craig's alter ego (the cool one, not that "Boy Meets World" crap.) A whole new post regarding a shadowy flight into the world of a man who does not exist. And comments... with references to 'A Christmas Story" and "Star Wars"...and "Battlestar Galactica." Not just "Battlestar" but the Universal ride that I never got to go see. And to top it all off, my first comment is relegated to the bin at number one sixty something. OK, So if everyone AGREES Knight Rider kicked some serious ass, who all in here remembered it's competitor.....AirWolf Posted by: Cherish at February 12, 2002 06:19 AMOvaltine, why do they call it Ovaltine, shouldn't it be called Roundtine. Posted by: David Adt at February 12, 2002 06:37 AMI loved Airwolf-at least the Jan-Michael Vincent/Ernest Borgnine version. That show had a cool theme song too. One of the things I liked best about it was that the copter usually helped tell the story. There were some good episodes that didn't even feature Airwolf in it. Unlike that crappy short lived "Blue Thunder" (with Dana Carvey and Dick Butkus) series that seemed like it had to make sure there were X number of shots of Blue Thunder using it's machine gun. Posted by: Jon at February 12, 2002 06:44 AMI did the whole KITT Thing growing up. I was totally depressed when I found out that it was an actor playing the voice of KITT. (of course, I was like 9 when I found that out) :) Airwolf was alright... more of a Knight Rider in the sky type of thing. Posted by: Mike at February 12, 2002 06:53 AMThere's no way KITT could kick the A-Team van's ass. Granted KITT itself is technically superior, but with Mr. T or even 'Howling Mad' Murdoch at the wheel, David Hasslehoff wouldn't stand a chance. I, being the Knight Rider nut that I was asked "How do you feel about Karr?" and got my illusions shattered when "Kitt" said "Who's Karr?" Ah yes. All that is lodged in the back of my brain. Oh god. As is Goliath, the truck covered in the same stuff as KITT (except for a weak spot, natch). And Garth Knight, otherwise known as Hasselhoff with the patented Beard of Evil(tm). Great days. Here in the UK there are a few cable/sat/DTT channels devoted to old and cheesey shows; UK Gold & UK Gold 2 (less cheesy) , Bravo and Sci Fi spring to mind. Currently this means that Airwolf, Knight Rider, The A-Team, The Bionic Woman, The Time Tunnel and Fantasy Island are all kicking around. Posted by: Dai Vernon at February 12, 2002 08:43 AM
Does this mean Wil's going to come back in style? Gosh, I used to love Airwolf too. A-Team, Knight Rider (now I have the theme going thru my head, thank you very much). And, my favorite cartoons were GI-Joe (A real American Hero), Go Bots and TRANSFORMERS (more that meets the eye. Autobots wage their battle to destroy the evil forces of the Decepticons). All my friends thought I was weird cuz I didn't get into Strawberry Shortcake (I just liked to smell the dolls) or any of the other "girlie" things. That, and I played with Star Wars action figures.... Memories, light the corners of my mind..... I remember my family taking my baby brother to the Buffalo Car Show to see the KITT car (I was probably 14-15 or so, he was 4-5). Somewhere, my mom has pictures... If you get the Ovaltine with the blue label, it's much better. I believe you're thinking of DIVX, which I felt was doomed from the start. Disposable movies? Riiiiiight. Posted by: sandra at February 12, 2002 09:06 AMOh hell yeah - goin through the window when Mom wasn't looking. I just couldn't slide across the hood. BY THE POWER OF GREYSKULL - I HAVE THE POWER!!!! Posted by: noworriesmon at February 12, 2002 09:12 AMLet me explain, no there is too much. To sum up: I'm from Texas, Houston to be exact. Haven't seen any other Texans listed...that's odd. There's ALWAYS people from Texas. I once stayed home from school sick and saw the first part of a two part G.I. Joe. I had to go back to school the next day and I was crushed...I had to know if Dusty (I think that was his name) woke up from his coma. (Two parter with a character in a coma in a children's cartoon???I love it!) This was before the handy dandy VCR was in every room in our house so I made my mom watch it and tell me what happened when I got home from school. I always liked Luke Duke much better. I always go for the underdog...and Tom Wopat was not hyped like Schneider was. And no, I'm not talking about the Bonnie Franklin loving variety. I also used to get up at 6 am one summer so I could watch reruns of the Hardy Boys...starring Parker Stephenson who was in Baywatch with Hasslehoff who starred in Knight Rider with KITT...six degrees of separation, KITT version. I'd then go swim laps in the neighborhood pool and come back to watch Battlestar Galactica. Good times. Man, I remember when I was a kid, I entered some contest where if you win; they would bring you a go-cart replica of that car. I SO wanted that! It was hell on the other kids at school when I didn't, the only thing left was to beat up the kids that asked me about it. Ah, that felt so much better. I loved growing up in the 70-80's. I didn't see him til I walked by him in the immigration lines on the last day but my SO pointed out the pictures of him with his fans in the photography booth, and man he looked wacked out. Either he's sick or he's seen too many nights of booze or coke is what my SO said and I had to agree. There was too a guy in the R2D2 get-up, I think it was Kenny Baker (I think, that was a long friggin' time ago). She-ra!! I remember that it was that show that I figured out that you could tell what parts of the scene would animate because it'd be colored differently than the rest of the background. They did some kind of "where's waldo" every episode which is what got me thinking about it... but Thundercats was WAYYYY better... (but that shouldn't be a surprise to anyone, considering my net identity) Drooling Mumm-RA! I'm impatient for it to be released on DVD. Anyone remeber Silverhawks? I loved the theme song for it and would watch it cause it shared the hour with Thundercats in the afternoon. now fess up... anyone masturbate while watching these shows (any of the ones mentioned here or above)? My Little Ponies!!! OK, so I DID play with the MLPs, but usually it involved taking them down the street to use them as battle stallions for the He-Man and GI-Joe action figures that the boys had.... Oh wait... I DID get some Buck Rogers action figures... AND the ship! (Thank goodness for that one uncle who realized that I wasn't one of those froo-froo type girls...) Posted by: Fred Fowler at February 12, 2002 10:36 AM Everyone learned though NOT to give me dolls... I wouldn't play with them (except Barbies.. go figure) Trying to remember the name of the show but there was another really cool cartoon where it was like Transformers except that it was 5 mechanical cats manned by 5 people that could assemble into one big "man" machine for super ass kicking. Ever since then I've looked at the toys in the toy stores with a super critical eye to how well the toy matches up to the show (or whatever). I also miss the saturday morning Ewok cartoons. But I'm reaching back to an even younger age for that.
Your right, that was the best picture ever! As far as I know, they still have Kitt sitting there near the food court right out side the castle theatre. (Where the Conan show was back in the day.) At least, Kitt was still there back when I worked at the Castle Theatre on "Beatleguse's Rockin' Graveyard Review" about... Heh, wow, that was like 5 or 6 years ago... Huh. The Beatleguse show isn't there anymore I hear, so Kitt may also be in moth balls. (Damn kids have no sence of history.) But at that time, he was still there, but you couldn't sit in him. Which made me sad. Posted by: Year Round Produce at February 12, 2002 10:42 AMMagalion!!!! How could you forget VOLTRON???!!! That's like forgetting G-Force or Robotech. Posted by: Rob Matsushita at February 12, 2002 01:04 PMThat knight rider picture is the best, I remember when I was at school many years ago, a rapper came out with a rap and the under tune was the kightrider theme tune, we took that tune, recored via a dictaphone out head of sixth forms pet sayings, then someone sliced and siced it so it was our head of year rapping over the knightrider theme tune. We got into a lot of trouble for that one especiallt since we played it at full volume on the last day of school for the whole school to hear it. Neither the head of sixth form nor the head teacher were much impressed! We thought it was very funny and so did the rest of the pupils at my school. Knight Rider rules though, I wanted, and still do want, KITT as my car. The best car in the world, although the off shots of knightrider (ie team knightrider and knightrider 2000) sucked. I also was a big fan of the a team and airwolf. There was also thunder in paridice with hulk hogan, thundercats, Terrorhawkes, He Man, She Ra. Of course there was UFO and Battlestar Gallatica (who had Dirk Benadict in it who played Face in the A Team, and in the later seasons Barry Van Dyke who was in late seasons of Airwolf), I could spend hours going down memory lane talking baout programes I watched as a kid but I'm wondering how many you guys would know 'cos I'm from England so I'm thinking yu wouldnt have had some of the programes we had. Does anyone remember a program that was with puppets, and there was an evil woman and she had like a matalic scorpion over her eye. I can't remember wehat it was called but it's something like Star Fleet or something???? Someone tell me what it was called cos it's driving me up the wall, but before anyone says it, it wasn't terrorhawkes 'cos that was Jerry and Sylvia Anderson thing, This Star Fleet thing was not an Anderson production. Posted by: Becky at February 13, 2002 09:59 AMWilliam Daniels rocks! Let me repeat that: WILLIAM DANIELS ROCKS!!! Do yourself a favor. Run out to your favorite video rental store and find: =="1776"==. His performance as 'John Adams' (against Howard DeSilva's 'Ben Franklin') is utterly hysterical. One of the funniest movies I've ever seen. And yes, I'm aware Brent Spiner reprised the role on Broadway. I don't wanna diss Data, but (judging from the album) it ain't even a close comparison -- Daniels *owns* that role. Megalion, overwhelmingly glad that it isn't, I mean, wasn't just me that did that! I suspect you didn't keep playing with My Little Ponies (secretly, until now that is) until you were 17. See, I bet that you were NEVER that sad! I went to US and talked to KITT when I was a kid.. I asked him how old he was, but my brother thought he would be a smart ass and catch the guy running the car, so he asked him to flip up his lights.. Lo and behold the lights flipped up.. Those US people thought of everything.. Posted by: Goalie at February 14, 2002 01:04 PMI always remember when KITT came to Australia and I was so overjoyed by the thought of being able to go and talk to the car. I sat again and it was like an old acquaintance. Miscellaneous comments on previous posts: C3PO did not introduce himself as "C3PO, human cyborg, relations." He introduced himself as "C3PO, human/cyborg relations." He is not a meat popsicle. I have to agree with RavinDave: William Daniels fans need to see the film version of the musical "1776", made in 1972. Difficult to find, but someone always broadcasts it around the 4th of July. Remember Ken Howard as "The White Shadow"? He sings, too. But I'm sorry: AirWolf would leave nothing of KITT but a grease spot on the tarmac. If i should get rich, I'll by a Ford Mustang just like KITT, i'm sure !!!! Posted by: stefan at October 9, 2002 04:50 AMI've got an old photo of KITT parked on that platform overlooking the pond. Last I heard, KITT was sitting in a storage lot, fully exposed to the elements. And the birds have been none too kind. Sad, really. As for KITT vs. (anything), I've ran multiple simulations in the past. With exception for one opponent, the battle always seems to go down the same. KITT faces off his opponent. The opponent strikes first, delivering a tiny amount of damage. KITT returns the strike, usually with a full frontal assault. BAM! The opponent is nearly toast with a 70%-95% destruction count. KITT charges again and delivers a KO blow. The end. Even Airwolf went down in a blaze of...fire. So, who is this mysterious opponent that my battle engine says can defeat KITT, over and over and over? Sadly, it says Herbie, The Love Bug can...and with ease, to boot. Then again, this is the same battle engine that says the Enterprise can blow the Voyager to pieces and still only require a day's worth of repairs in Dry Dock. (Well, there was that one battle where Voyager was only 2% intact and Janeway plows through the ^0%+ Enterprise's saucer section at Warp 1 for some firey results. I suspect one Voyager room had life supports left. Though, who survived??? Probably Janeway, with her 158 victories and 1 loss track record.) And, when I asked it what numbers to play for the lottery, it eventually replied (Took a couple hours to kick out the results) "DONT PLAY". I look at the results this engine produces and ponder if today's computers aren't already AI smart and just haven't yet bothered to say, "Hi."
