Flamenco Sketches

Four days off.

That's like 5 years in internet time, isn't it?

What a great time it was, though. The whole time we were together, Anne and I kept commenting on how we couldn't remember the last time we did anything "just the two of us." After some discussion, we figured out that the last time we spent any time together alone, it was over our anniversary, back in November.

It was really awesome, and a very much needed diversion from "real life." I turned the computer off on Friday morning, and it stayed off until about 30 minutes ago. And I have to tell you, I am surprised to say that turning it back on was not an easy thing to do...mostly because my poor computer is really on it's last legs, and it's painful to watch the poor old girl start up... :-)

Today is a school holiday for the kids, and I was planning on staying home, and hanging out with them, and working longer days tomorrow and Wednesday...but I have two, count 'em, two auditions tomorrow, and I won't be able to go into work, so I spent a half day there, finishing up some re-writes that are due in two days.

I really love my job, and I really like the people I work with. I realized as I was driving home today how lucky that makes me. I know so many people who just hate their jobs, and dread going to work, and I am not amongst their number. Sure, it helps that we all play lots of games, but the creative freedom I have on my show, and the visceral excitement I feel when I watch an edit of one of our shows is what really makes the hellish commute worth it.

You know, now that I think about it, there is really a lot in my life that I love: my job, my wife, my step-kids, my dog, my friends and family...

I had an email a few months ago from a WWDN reader who mentioned to me that his Thai Chi master has him write down 7 things each day that he is thankful for. I think that's a simply brilliant idea, and everyone should do it.

I'll go first. Today, I am thankful for:

  1. Waking up to my wife's smile.
  2. The traffic-free drive to work, because today is a holiday.
  3. The cool, crisp, ocean breeze that blew across my face when I got out of my car at work.
  4. Ryan's unbridled enthusiasm as he shows me that he can ollie nearly 12 vertical inches on his skateboard.
  5. The sunset this evening, turning to gold the leafless branches of the trees in my neighborhood, as they reach towards a cloudy, indigo sky.
  6. Nolan coming to me, when I got home from work, and following me around the house, telling me all about his weekend that he spent with his dad.
  7. Finding my "This American Life" CD, which I had thought I'd lost.

That's all I have for now. I'm off to prepare my auditions.

Thought for today:

If you are able, help others. If not, at least refrain from hurting them.

7:48 PM PST: I want to add something to my list...

8. Nolan serenading Anne and me during our dinner.

Now, I will explain: Earlier tonight, both kids went to play at their friend's houses. As dinner time drew closer, we got a phone call from Ryan, asking if he could stay at his friend's for dinner, followed almost immediately by a similar call from Nolan. So Anne and I prepared for a romantic, candle-lit dinner for 2, while the boys were off with their friends.

I raced up to the market, and picked up this yummy stuffed chicken breast, and a wonderful bottle of Bordeaux. Trouble was, the chicken took almost an hour to cook, and by the time we were sitting down to eat, both kids had come home.

Nolan walked into the dining room, assessed the situation, and announced that he would be right back. He returned with his saxaphone, and proclaimed that he would play all his songs for us while we ate dinner.

So Anne and I ate our romantic dinner for two, while Nolan played "Hot Cross Buns", "The French Song", "The German Waltz", "Yankee Doodle", and the ever-popular "Oats Peas Beans." It was the one of the coolest things I have ever seen him do.

If I wasn't such a badass, it may have brought tears to my eyes.

i will tell you though, i have been starved for some updates and posts from you wil...ive been house-sitting in the middle of nowhere, and while i do have the phone to talk to my friends, none of them really drive, and therefore i am basically alone, except for the puppies (who are wonderful company, arent you molly and ginger?!?!)

gotta run now, and have some human contact!

Seven years dry -- today!

John McGregor

You know, I just realized something: by taking the time to actually think about 7 things for which you are happy and or thankful, you are increasing the amount of positive energy in the world, and, specifically, in your immdiate vicinity.

I think that's really cool :)

Posted by: wil at February 18, 2002 06:10 PM

Ok, I'll throw in my 7 cents:

1. My green VW beetle
2. The Binary Code blanket I'll be getting in 3 days for my birthday.
3. My mother's health
4. A good paying, if occasionally stultifying job.
5. The knowledge that I'll be back in school come September
6. Increasing acceptance of my geekdom
7. Internet access so I can interact with all of you weird, cool people (sniffle, barf)

Posted by: Chris at February 18, 2002 06:12 PM

John-

Congratulations, and happy birthday!!!

I have many, many friends who are in recovery. 7 years is amazing.

:)

Posted by: wil at February 18, 2002 06:13 PM

Oh btw, best of luck on the auditions tomorrow. Hey, if you think positive things about us beforehand, you'll increase the area with positive energy 50,000-fold. There's a comforting thought. :)

Seven things I am thankful for.... You know I am sitting here and I just realized something.

I am so caught up in what is wrong in this world. My problems (very much plural) that I don't even know how to answer this question. When I try to think of 7 things, heck 1 thing, it is overshadowed by the bad.

2. My new 2002 Hyundai Accent, "Shinigami" who took me through a snowstorm without even slipping once!
3. My three loving happy dogs, Pepper, Kahulua, and Heidi who jump atleast three times their height whenever I come in the door
4. Having this page to come to every day

First off, congrats, John!

Seven years dry -- today!
John McGregor

Now... what I'm thankful for today:
1. I am getting a Masters Degree in something I love to do!
2. I got to see the sunset today - there was a hazy cloud at the horizon that made it all BRIGHT fuscia and purple...wow!
3. I didn't hurt myself when I tripped over something in the parking lot and landed really hard on my wrists...
4. The computer tech guy fixed my stone age machine at work! (Well... sort of...)
5. My kendo club was invited to do a demonstration for a group of at-risk kids
6. My colleague's research project is finally on the data analysis stage
7. My red betta is STILL ALIVE after having jumped out of the tank, landing in a potted plant and getting coated in potting soil, and getting stuck to the desk for what must have been at least 45 minutes before I found him!

Posted by: kendoka at February 18, 2002 08:28 PM

1. My 5 kids (3 bio, 2 steps) for making every waking moment an adventure.
2. My 5 kids for allowing me to relive the joys of childhood.
3. My 5 kids, my immortality.
4. Okay, I know I have other thankful things aside from my kids. My husband, for always allowing me to be me (with only the occasional comment about insanity).
5. My quick mind and quicker wit. Now I just need to add wisdom in there and I'll be all set.
6. Even though it was horribly cold today there was still bright sunlight and fresh air.
7. My friends and family, who listened patiently to me all evening while I did Olympic play by plays.

I'm glad I saw this at the end of my day. It's hard to remember to be thankful in the midst of insanity, though perhaps that's when I need it the most.

7 things I am thankful for today:

1. Taking my husband to see George Carlin live and having him love it.
2. The "take-over his whole face" grin of my two-year-old godson.
3. That I live in Canada.
4. That I have friends who actually think it's a cool idea to have a "Jackie Chan Movie Party" this weekend.
5. My husband being a cunning linguist. ; )
6. My amazingly wonderful and unconditonally loving Grandma.
7. Cats, just cats, I love cats.

What 7 reason do I have? I don't have a wife or kids because I never met right the right 1 and I like being alone. Everybody in my family has health problems and my job makes my legs hurt, but I do have 7 to give you.

1.) I'm blessed I do got a family to whine to, but, in return, I gotta listen to them.

2.) I do have a job right now.

3.) I got a place to come home to.

4.) I can put in a tape and watch a movie or a favorite TV show.

5.) I can play whatever music I like.

6.) I live in a country where I can write to my local Congressman. As a matter of fact, I got a phone message from his DC office that I got to reply to. It's over a local project I'm planning. Honest.

7.) I can actually go on-line and whine to my favorite actor in my favorite TV show. Whether or not he reads it is another story.

I know I would roll my eyes upward over this, if I was him, but call all of this the couch potato reasons to be blessed. ;-)

Well, here are my seven reasons for happiness:

1. I'm going to Geneva on Sunday...
2. ...and will work there with a local professor..
3. ... who invited me himself...
4. ... because he was interested in my previous work...
5. ... and I will see there some colleagues of mine...

Lists, lists , everybody has a list. So, in honor of Presidents Day......

Fun Presidential pets

1. George Washington. One of his dogs was named Sweetlips. Another, Drunkard.

2. William Taft had Pauline Wayne, the last cow at the White House.

3 Zachary Taylor and the Mrs. had a short lived canary called Johnny Ty who died shortly after they tried to pair him with a mate, only to discover it too was male.

4. Andrew Johnson It is known that President Johnson left flour out at night for a family of mice playing in his room during his dark days of impeachment.

5 Woodrow Wilson had Old Ike, a tobacco chewing ram.

6 John Quincy Adams had an alligator given to him by the Marquis de Lafayette, and the Mrs. kept silkworms.

7 Dubya. A Longhorn named Ofelia. In residence at his ranch in Texas, not the White House.

Posted by: Fred Fowler at February 18, 2002 09:31 PM

I wonder where John Q kept that alligator...?

Posted by: kendoka at February 18, 2002 09:35 PM

I have nothing to be thankful for, so there won't be a list here.

Just a "good luck tomorrow Wil, break a leg."

Posted by: Kakaze at February 18, 2002 09:38 PM

7) The fact that I have a parallel "other" who just happens to live on the West Coast and pretends to be an actor, when, in fact, he is a writer.

6) A wife who tolerates me beyond acceptable norms.

5) A wife who tolerates anything to do with 0's and 1's.

4) The "process" of friendship.

3) Karma, baby. Freaking Karma.

2) Stupid, stupid jokes and bad humor and all who support it.

1) Cheese. Duh.

Posted by: Roughy at February 18, 2002 09:47 PM

Those aren't in order, btw. Wife stuff always goes first.

Cheese, of course, is a close second, and Fowler would never make the list because he's like number 9 or something.

Posted by: Roughy at February 18, 2002 09:48 PM

Wil, you are amazing You remind people that you are as regular as everyone else and people who "famous" are just as normal and thankful for life as much as the average joe or jane. You think people wopuld have learned that after 9/11/01 but people aer starting to forget it.

Posted by: Jennifer at February 18, 2002 09:53 PM

1. my family and friends
2. The animal part of my family
3. my health
4. my home & hometown
5. my job
6. my education
7. having the opportunity to help others

I find it's difficult to compress everything I'm thankful for into a list of 7, this is the best I could do.

Posted by: Sarah at February 18, 2002 09:55 PM

I got a kick out of the thought for the day...
I help others BY hurting them.

I work in a clinical laboratory as a Med Tech and sometimes have to stick a needle in peoples arm to draw blood. "SLIGHT POKE NOW" Har Har. Hey there's a shortage of qualified people in the health care field. We need more people!! if you don't have a career yet, check out the Med Tech section of my dorky, waste of space, monstrosity of a web site otherwise the future holds scary high school graduates and people getting their certificates through some at home Sally Struthers T.V. commerical.

1. My job
2. My family that I actually get along with
3. My dumb and naughty cats
4. My Playstation
5. Who ever invented movies
6. My identical twin sister who's just as big a dork as me...go figure
7. Friends who are genuine

TWO DOLLARS!!!!
I WANT MY TWO DOLLARS!!

tsk tsk tsk

*snicker*

Posted by: AMStrange at February 18, 2002 10:33 PM

Ah heck, I can sure jump on this bandwagon! :)

In no particular order I am thankful for:

1) The fact that my dad hasn't called in at least 2 days. (if you knew my dad, you'd understand why this is so)

2) My wonderful husband who puts up w/ my crazy family and who makes me laugh.

3) Being able to get four pocket zip discs at about half price.

4) My kitties.

5) Having a sister who is not just my family, but my friend.

6) My cosmic twin who understands my weirdness.

7) My best friend who puts up with my strange way of explaining life's events w. movie analogies.

8) Always having enough to eat when there a lot of people who don't.

9) Being able to order the Anthony Stewart Head CD. (Im obsessed, what can I say?)

10) The internet because I found my husband thru it and it has helped me realize that even people that I consider famous and cool get nervous about job interviews - just like regular folk.

OK, I went over 7 - hope that's ok - I never could color in the lines. ;-)

Posted by: K2 at February 18, 2002 10:36 PM

So Anne and I ate our romantic dinner for two, while Nolan played "Hot Cross Buns", "The French Song", "The German Waltz", "Yankee Doodle", and the ever-popular "Oats Peas Beans."

AAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA! OMG, please tell me you got it on tape! =) I love it.

Posted by: Matt at February 18, 2002 11:24 PM

I'll forgo the list, just to say that I couldn't fit into seven lines the things I'm happy about at the moment.Uni, Work, Family, Friends they're all good at the moment, and I plan to keep them that way.

BUT:
One thing I am also happy about:

MY BINARY BLANKET!
(yeah, I've got one, Chris!)
It's the coolest thing I have, I think, as I'm not one to place a lot of value on "things", but this binary blanket from thinkgeek.com is one of the coolest presents anyone has gotten me.

That and my "No, I will not fix your computer" T-shirt ... heh heh heh

Posted by: Ghost at February 18, 2002 11:33 PM

Okay, am I the only one who recognizes the NBC Olympic music that they play as being the intro music to "Brisco County, Jr."?

I must be... But, I'M RIGHT!

The Cheese Knows Music!

Well, The Cheese is convinced Fowler knows everything and hates him for his Dennis Miller-esque commentary.

Posted by: Roughy at February 18, 2002 11:36 PM

So, anyway, Bruce Campbell is in the 'Lympics.

Wil Wheaton's auditioning for 2 movies as an Olympian, and I wish him the best of luck.

In one, he'll star as a runner, which will require a lot of working out with a personal trainer, so I know he hopes he gets it.

It's been so long since the teen-days of posing shirtless. Oh, Teen HeartThrob...where for art thou?

In the other, he's the coach of a bobsleigh team...he's somewhat washed-up due to his cheating 16 years earlier in the...

No, wait, that's Cool Runnings, with John Candy.

In this other one, I'm not allowed to discuss the role, but let's just say this:

Nude sex scene.

Apparently, if he gets the part, he's going to have to go under the laser for tattoo-removal.

Ouch.

Posted by: Roughy at February 18, 2002 11:44 PM

I just saw "First Duty" on TNN. That was a good one Wil, very good performance. The Ready Room scene when Picard confronts Wesley was great. Only thing that doesn't withstand the test of time.. the "step" haircut. I had the same haircut myself as a kid at that age, but nowadays it is a little goofy to see. How negative I get though.. good episode! Here's to First Duty and the step haircut!

K, things I'm thankful for
1) my ever loving husband who I can watch bad-ass B, C and D class sci-fi movies with and obsess with new technology
2) my family
3) my bestest ever friend who ain't these days - she's more honorary family
4) people who have a dry, ironic/sarcastic sense of humour, cos we talk the same language
5) a new house to move into when it's built, all brand spanking new!
6) a beautiful country to live in. Go Aussies!
7) my two cats, one of which likes to stare at me in the middle of the night until I wake up and then freak when I see 2 black eyes 10cm from my face!
8) gorgeous summer weather
9) beaches, mountains and countryside all within easy driving distance
10) my grandma, and my great-aunty, both women who really understand me and provide me with plenty of gossip-fodder!
OOps, I went over - 5 bonus points

I hope you lucky bastards are enjoying watching the olympics! We're only getting 1.5hrs per night, not even worth watching with the amount of ad breaks

Heh, Ghost, I ordered my "No I Will Not Fix Your Computer" baby tee weeks ago and it was on backorder. Bah!

I think I'll have to go for that Binary Blanket next, but considering my location, I'll wait.

Courtney's Seven Things, in no particular order:
* Living in Hawaii
* A patient, sweet and loving fiancé
* A fun job with great people
* Caffeine
* My creativity and ability to express it
* Sleep. Sleeeeeeeeeeep.
* Healthy hair that behaves (and lots of it)

Heh. I'm sure if I thought about it more (and was more awake) I'd have a better and more thoughtful list. ;)

Good luck with the auditions, Uncle Willy!

Posted by: Courtney at February 19, 2002 12:55 AM

Hey Courtney - if you don't mind me asking - where in Hawaii are you? I grew up on the Big Island and always love it when I find someone I can "talk story" with. :-)

Posted by: K2 at February 19, 2002 12:58 AM

The whole Nolan-serenading-the-happy-couple thing makes me wish I had had more self-esteem at that age, and that my parents were actually living together then.

No order here, because I'd worry about that too much.

- Queen
- The opportunity to go to a really nice college with a lot of really nice people
- The senses of sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell all working fairly well
- A fairly decent family, despite how much they really make me want to take a giant block of parmasan cheese and bludgeon them to death with it
- Sweets
- Love
- Really rad people

Add to this something we all ought to be grateful for - Sam Raimi - and you're set.

Well, him, and the set of circumstances which brought about our miserable existence on this thin shell of habitable land on this unimpressive little dust speck called Earth.

But that's hardly worth mentioning.

Just to keep the ball rolling here my 7 are as follows.

1) My family, especially my father who is my hero.
2) The fact that my girlfriend has finally agreed to move in with me! (Dances the happy dance)
3) The fact that I got a job straight out of University and it lets me pay the bills.
4) My friends. Definitely my friends!
5) Lucking out in the lottery that is birth and arriving in a loving family in an industrialised part of the world where I don’t have to worry about hunger or people shooting at me.
6) www.wilwheaton.net (Aren’t I a creep?)
7) The fact that I am able to make my girlfriend smile at least once a day.

4. Old friends who eventually come back. Always hoped they would...

Seven things I'm grateful for...

1. My mother. What a farking amazing woman she is. No matter how screwed up I get, or life seems to get, she is always there to make me laugh, and listen to me when I need to cry.

2. My best friend. When life gets like a rollercoaster, I can always depend on him to be the bar that straps me down and keeps me safe.

3. My dog. She gives the best puppy kisses known to humanity.

4. The life I've lived. Luck, tragedy, fame, disappointment, laughter and challenges. Every single event has helped to make me who I am, and I'm pretty happy with that.

5. Books. Never has there been a better form of escapism from the madness that lurks around the corner.

6. Music. It answers all my questions for me.

7. Wanky, but hey... Star Trek. It lifts me up, and even a bad episode is better than most of the crap on TV.

bellwether, I have no idea what my betta's secret of life is. It must be a fish thing. I have a goldfish that I got waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back when I was a senior in high school and we used him as a prop in the spring play. He's 8 years old, way too big for a 5 gallon tank, and has survived every disease known to goldfish.

I must find out their secret!!! Then I can patent it and make zillions of dollars... or at least enough to pay off my student loans so I can do more volunteer work and not worry about defaulting. (;

I've never seen "Brisco County Jr." but the Olympic theme that they play on tv was written by John Williams for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, I believe. Everyone liked it so much that they kept using it.

2.The forest in which I live in. The life inside the trees, on branches. Footprints of visitors from the evening.
3.My dad and my brother.. we're closer together now even though times are tough we'll pull through.
4.Music, without it I think by now I'd be a total fruitcase heh

6. Happy that my wife got me a free massage from our mutual buddy Molly today.

5. Happy that I'm able to get away with wearing sneakers at work for two days in a row.

4. Happy that I've switched job locations to a cooler, more laid-back setting that's closer to home.

3. Happy that I'm to a point where more people are seeing my writing than before--and that other theater companies in town are interested in my writing.

2. Happy that another "Project: Blitzkrieg" is coming up. (Check my weblog for details) /shameless plug

And 1. Happy that my wife and I, while not having a house, child, or a Rottweiller, are both really excited about eventually getting all three.

John - congrats and happy birthday. That's a major accomplishment and you should be so proud!

Wil - you really do have amazing kids! I can only hope that when it comes to be my turn to have kids that they turn out like that!

Break a leg at your auditions today - all my mojo is pointed up Interstate 5 to you. *sending good vibes*

One more thing I'm thankful for....

That I have gone 15 days without a cigarette. That in those 15 days, I have experienced NONE of the normal withdrawal symptoms and that I have not had any overwhelming urges to smoke. I've made it through the hard part with flying colors. Thank you!

Posted by: noworriesmon at February 19, 2002 08:23 AM

You're a better man than I, noworriesmon.

Although my wife just quit (she hasn't smoked for over a month, now) so maybe it's a matter of time.

I love how smoking is connected with an image of being a rebel, when Big Tobacco has one of the most powerful lobbys in the country. It is definitively "The Man."

Wil waxing philosophical.. you have to love it.. Welcome back!! Im starting to look forward more and more to your posts.. it is so rare to find someone who focuses so much on the positive.. as some of the posts above show, a lot of people find it easier to focus on the negative..

I believe my #8 should be appreciation for the silly little things I do that somehow affect others.

Thanks for the feel-good.

Guess what? Nolan and my son Will are learning the same songs in band. Will also plays the sax, which I think is the coolest instrument. For Christmas he made a video tape of himself playing his winter concert in front of our christmas tree for his grandparents. Which he hand delivered all the way to Tennessee. That was a suprise for them also.

here's my seven....
1. my husband..were soul mates what else can I say
2. my son...he's definitly cool
3. our cat, she's a little crazy but that works in our family
4.my job, I like what I do
5.my husband's job.. it pays are bills with some left over
6.my best friend...we are a 3000 miles apart but we are still close
7. God... he listens to me and knows all my fears and dreams

ok... my number 8 is the same as my number 2 !
But I gotta share.

Ive been doing physical therapy for 3 weeks now on my knee that I had to get fixed. I was showering when my two year old stuck her head in and threw my sponge at me, hit me straight in the face. Made me laugh. Then my 5 year old came in as I was putting my shoes on with my panty hose wrapped around her head like a turban. Made me think how lucky I am ! Im a single mom...but Im not alone in this!

Posted by: John K. at February 19, 2002 10:45 AM

At first I thought of all the things I'm not thankful for but then I decided to really find something, just anything to be thankful for. I'm happy that I thought of more than just 7. Here is my list:

1. My 2 dogs
2. Guinness
3. Hockey
4. I have a job that allows me to pay my bills.
5. That my friends Cory & Chris also have boring jobs so we can email each other all day long about things like the Elvish language, Trek, my insane family & the stupid people we work with.
6. I saw my friend Erich on Saturday for the first time in many months.
7. WWDN (well, its true).
8. Stephen King's novella "The Body" & the movie based on it, "Stand By Me".
9. Unlike Cory, I don't have a co-worker who thinks Africa is a country and that Zimbabwe is just a color or something like that.
10. My friends who accept that I am a rententive, neurotic, obsessive-compulsive, paranoid geek.
11. One person in my company knows what a Sith Lord is & thinks its funny I have a sign in my office which reads "I was a Teen-Age Sith Lord!"
12. My awesome car.
13. I have more than 7 things to be grateful for.
14. My aunts, uncles, grandparents & cousins.
15. I got to go to the movies 5 days in a row, enjoyed all 5 movies and only had to pay for 2 of them.
16. The X-Games will be in Philadelphia this summer, again.
17. My birthday is coming soon.
18. My (other) friend Eric is building me a new computer.
19. That there are those in this world who let me ramble on and on and on for so long as I've just done.

Ok. I'll stop there. Good luck at your auditions Wil! Congrats to John and to noworriesmon!

Posted by: jl at February 19, 2002 10:47 AM

jl -

that sounds like me and some of my friends. there are days when we email back and forth all day long about stupid stuff like that. having just seen LOTR yesterday, I'm all about talking about it! My office is full of LOTR freaks. We've taken to naming our servers after characters. Right now, our email server is Smeagol. Another one is Frodo and I don't know if we've decided on names for the others.....

Love the Teenage Sith Lord sign - made me laugh.

Posted by: noworriesmon at February 19, 2002 11:32 AM

Well, I'm a little late to the party, but that's okay. Fashionably late is cool, right? :)

7 things I'm thankful for...in no particular order...

1) Waking up a little late to predictions of clouds and rain...then making it to work on time and watching the clouds blow by and blue skies and sunshine lighting up downtown Seattle.

2) The fact that I'm finally actually living in Seattle rather than Anchorage, Alaska.

3) Growing up in Anchorage. I had all sorts of goofball experiences and made wonderful friends that I wouldn't have otherwise.

4) Having three weddings to go to within the next two years - James and Stacy this June, Casey and Jenny this July, and my brother Kevin and Emily next year sometime.

5) Old friends that were here when I moved down, new friends that I've been making since I moved down, and a girlfriend that's kind of a bizarre combination of both of those, in a wierd sort of way.

6) Movies, music, books, and 'puters - four things that, both collectively and individually, I spend _way_ too much money on. But that's the point of having the money there in the first place, right?

7) Life. Just being here. Seeing each day pass by, with all of the good and bad things that happen. Knowing that no matter how bad things seem to be at any given point, there are always more days coming along that can - and will - hold wonders just as amazing as whatever may be getting me down.

It's an incredible world we live in, and it'd be a pity _not_ to step back, look around, and actually see some of the things we tend to take for granted. Thanks for this list suggestion, Wil, and thanks to for everyone who's contributing (maybe that's number 8 on my list?).

Cool beans.

Posted by: djwudi at February 19, 2002 11:41 AM

Today we actually sidetracked from discussing the Elvish language & traced our lineages back to some Hobbit families. Turns out I'm a Took & Cory is most definately a Baggins. And Chris is a Gamgee. Tho' its been determined that Chris and I are less Hobbit than Cory b/c we are both rather tall. Must be the Entwater.

Yea! Some one else out there who appreciates my Teen-Age Sith Lord sign! You don't know what this does to relieve my paranoia!

Found another thing to be thankful for: the musical colaberations of George Harrison & Eric Clapton.

Posted by: jl at February 19, 2002 11:52 AM

Hmmm. So, how does one trace it's lineage? I'd be curious to see if I have any Hobbit in me.

I'd also have to agree with you on the Harrison/Clapton collaborations. Seen Clapton in concert twice and he was amazing. Thanks to my mom for introducing me to Clapton, SRV, the Beatles, the Doors and Zeppelin.

Posted by: Rob Matsushita at February 19, 2002 12:23 PM

Well, it wasn't a very professional "tracing". We basically looked at our personality traits & mannerisms and matched them to certain families mentioned in Tolkein's works. It was decided I'm part Took on my dad's side w/ some Gollum on my mom's side. And the rest is a mix of the races of man. I suppose we really can't claim ancestry to Middle Earth & Hobbits -tho I'm sure Cory is working on a way to do it. If you could meet him you'd say "Oh my gosh! He IS Bilbo Baggins!" Except w/o the Ring. Its freaky, people say to him all the time that he reminds them of Bilbo -and to him its a great complement. Just one of the reasons why I'm happy he's my friend.

Posted by: jl at February 19, 2002 12:31 PM

1. My Grandmother, who taught me about how music reflects the soul.

2. The ability to create art in more than one form.

3. Steve, who is my true friend if ever I had one.

4. Chaos, Inc. and everything that means.

5. All four adorable, completely different, wonderful kitties.

6. My dearest friends. They number few, but they mean the world.

7. The undeniable presence of love in my life. Love for everything.

There's a start.

You know, you have a choice in everything you do.

It may not be easy to actually turn things around and simply be happy, and I may just be another person who doesn't understand...

But, I think you'd be surprised around here.

Hell, half of the world goes through being depressed all the time. Lord knows I've been a shut-in on more than one ocassion for several months at a time.

And, if all else fails, read the Yahoo! Personals for some yuks...

Unless, of course, no one's been answering your Yahoo! Personal, in which case, I'm completely sorry that I brought it up.

And, don't go getting all "supposedly trying to help me..."

I don't think you'll find a much more genuine group of people...even when it gets down to SpudNuts and Fowler and their misunderstood witicisms.

Spike *sending you positive vibes*...the joy will come back to you one day, hang in there :)
No-one can make you happy, only you can do this and to get there it can be a rough road to travel but it is worth it in the end.

I don't recall the quote exactly, but it went something like this "Our capacity for joy is only matched by our capacity for sorrow."

So think, however bad you feel now, at some stage in the future you will feel equally happy. That's something to think about. Keep your chin up.

4. For my dog, Murphy, that greeted me at the door with a squeaky toy. (She does this every work day.)
5. For my wonderful husband and the help he provides with computer support.
6. For the 56K modem that is handling my internet needs while the DSL line is being "repaired" by the phone company.
7. For Wil's updates which gave me a much needed lift today.

2) My son, the cutest boy in the world, he is really smart, too smart for his own good sometimes, and really mellow for a 2 year old, and (prepare to be jealous) when we say its time to go sleepy or tell him he needs a new diaper, he gets all happy & runs to his bedroom door
3)poor as we are, we are not in need. we have a roof over our heads, even though we share a car, we have a car, we don't go hungry, we have what we need
4)ok, the good health of my family (this includes in-laws) although I am having some problems right now, I'm not dying, and no one in the family is ill
5)I have cool in-laws! I really do!
6)we will be getting a tax return of just over $2600 - this is big money for us! it will pay off all our debts, and get our car fixed, and get my husband new glasses

5. My step-kids.......they just rock.
6. I can't help myself, I have to bring up my husband again.......having a husband who is also my hero. He's in the Air Force and is overseas right now. I miss him terribly, but am so incredibly proud of him.
7. Today, I'm thankful for Wil because he suggested this and I probably wouldn't have done it on my own. Everybody should do this, often.

GO SAXOPHONES! Tell Nolan he rocks, and that if he picks up clarinet too, he's even cooler.

Yep.

1) My mom, for dealing with my constantly changing schedule and driving me from place to place as I can't drive yet.
2) Mr. O, for letting me do a solo last night at the jazz band concert
3) My friends, espcially Matt, Tara, Katie, and Peter, because they all came last night! :) Of course, Matt was *in* the concert, but he stayed for my jazz band...
4) The lady at Border's, because she found the lost/last copy of Fashion Nugget I wanted to buy
5) My Buffet R-13. If that means anything to you, you get it...
6) Whoever pulled the fire alarm during my god-awful health class
7) My teachers in general, but espcially my music teachers, for being there to ask questions and deal with me not understanding things..

1.) My incridably cool parents who have devoted their entire lives to help chaiffer me to school, tae kwon do practice, and every book store on the planet.
2.) The fact I am able to go to this fantastic school that enriches my life everyday (am I the ONLY teenager on the planet who actually looks forward to school beginning again in the fall? Yeah, probably)
3.) My zany friend who can always make me laugh no matter how bummed I am.
4.) My other friend who continues to leave me guessing about his mental state.
5.) The fact that I survived cancer, beat the 1/10 odds the doctors had given me (seriously, they were telling my parents to begin picking out a burial plot).
6.) That I have been in remission for over ten years with no ill side effects.
7.) Due to me having cancer I get to go to a kick-ass camp for cancer patients and survivers where I not only have the greatest time in my life, I get to help other kids by giving them hope. (check out the site for more info)

Spooky - congrats on kicking cancer. That is so cool and I'm sure it gives you a whole different outlook on life.

That's wonderful!

Vickie-
Thanks. I know there are lots of people out there going through what I'm going through. It really sucks at times. My husband is supposed to be home on or around(don't you love the military speak for "we don't want to say in case you have to stay longer"?)March 22nd. Supposedly, he'll be home until at least October after that. I miss him so much. He called tonight, though. So, tonight I'm the sappy in love chick instead of the depressed wishing he would call chick.
