March 08, 2002

It's Friday, I'm in Love

Remember when we were younger, and we'd start planning our Friday nights on Tuesday?

Remember those big plans, to go out to a club, or a concert, or a show, and find some hot member of the opposite sex, and take them home?

Yeah, me neither.

But now that we're older, our Friday night plans usually go something like this:

  • heat up leftovers
  • start laundry
  • clean up kitchen
  • move laundry from washer to dryer
  • clean up living room
  • take burned dinner out of oven
  • curse at oven
  • order dinner
  • open bottle of wine, so it can "breathe" before dinner gets here
  • vaccuum family room
  • pour glass of wine while waiting
  • clean bathroom
  • pour second glass of wine
  • call boss, give him a piece of my mind
  • get into argument on internet
  • yell at delivery guy for taking two $#!ing hours to deliver my lasagna, which is now cold
  • pour third glass of wine
  • pour fourth glass of wine
  • fall into sad, nostalgic stupor watching Wacky Races on Boomerang
  • pass out ^H^H^H^H^H^H^H go to sleep

Sound familiar? Want to return to the days when we were crazy and free? The days when we'd actually go out on a Friday night, because, goddammit, we were young and free?

Hell yeah!!

Well, I've got something for you, chucky: If you live in or near Los Angeles, and you don't know what to do for your Friday night, you can come and see me, Wil Wheaton, live and in person, on the J. Keith vanStraaten show!!

Tonight's guests include Bruno Kirby, comedian John O'Donnell, and kickass band Blockage.

The show is always insanely fun, and I'd love to meet any WWDN readers who come over to see us.

We are at the ACME Comedy Theatre, and the show starts at 10 PM. There are only 6 shows this season, so time is already running out. You can get information on reservations and ticket prices from Keith's website.

Now, if you're not in or near Los Angeles, of you're just afraid to leave the house without your Tinfoil Hat, I have another thing that you can do tonight: you can stay home, safe and secure, and watch my sister, Amy, on First Monday, tonight at 9PM on CBS.

Now how about that? Who else on the internet helps plan out your Friday night Social Calendar?

Nobody, that's who.

Except for your old pal Uncle Willie, because he cares.

Oh Wil! We're coming to LA for Easter, but miss the show by a day! Woe is us! Thanks for the replacement Friday night suggestion - it'll never be the same...

Posted by: mcfoo at March 8, 2002 09:20 AM

ROFL! Alice rulez!!!

And let me just say a big thank you for not having any really scary links today like
John Ashcroft sings, WFS' blog, or Squirrels singing about gonads and
strife.

Posted by: Mrs. Veteran at March 8, 2002 09:22 AM

LOL at the comments prior to this one! Anyway, I'm still in my "young and free" days and you know what I'm doing tonight?? NOTHING!! *sigh* Alas, my social calendar is free, so I will be watching your sister this evening Wil! Maybe the next time I swing to LA I'll be able to see you. *marks that on her social calendar*

Posted by: Crystalia at March 8, 2002 09:22 AM

I caught First Monday last week and actually liked the show. It doesn't have the same intensity and smart writing as the West Wing, but it makes for an enjoyable hour of television. One Quesation though, who does Wil's sister play on the show? Is she a regular or is she a guest on tonight's episode. Please, no lame jokes. It;s Friday and I want to stay in a good mood. :-P

Posted by: JohnnyA at March 8, 2002 09:32 AM

I'd like to propose that Wil and crew buy themselves and old time circus caravan and roam North America, randomly entertaining whomever's path they cross.

Just make sure you stop in Toronto, we love theatre here (yeah, we Canucks spell 'theater' our own way). Except the Toronto Church of Scientology. They complained forever to city hall about the giant 'Vagina Monologues' sign on the theatre across the street from them. So finally the Vagina Monologues moved on... to be replaced by 'Puppetry of the Penis'! I love it when everything works out.

Posted by: jamese at March 8, 2002 09:32 AM

Hey! I'm older and my Friday nights are not like that.

It's usually a bottle of vodka, not wine.

Posted by: olafandy jon at March 8, 2002 09:37 AM

HA! Friday nights! that's a joke. My Friday nights are spent collapsed on the floor after five days at a hell otherwise known as high school. Now Saturday nights, those are much different!

Posted by: Twilight at March 8, 2002 09:42 AM

C'mon Wil, you gotta tell us if your sister is just on for tonight's First Monday or if she's a regular!

Posted by: bluevangogh at March 8, 2002 09:42 AM

YAY! I'm braving the untamed jungle that is Hollywood and coming to the show tonight!

And then I can say that THISONETIME,IMETWILWHEATONANDILAUGHEDANDSQUEAKEDANDIWENT WHEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!

Posted by: Kimberly at March 8, 2002 09:46 AM

So, uh, how long have you been video taping my Friday nights Wil?

Anyway, I'm not in L.A. -- you really should bring the show to Boston. However, bunches of my friends (who also read WWDN) are in L.A., so I'll put on my pimpin' hat for you and tell them to head on over.

Posted by: Monique at March 8, 2002 09:46 AM

well, I won't be coming tonight - but may try and catch the April 12th show. But, I'll definitely check out Amy tonight.

Break a leg tonight. I'm going home and taking a long nap (see my blog entry for today if you want to know why)

Vickie

p.s. My boyfriend's back! Yay!

Posted by: sarcastic cheese at March 8, 2002 09:47 AM

You forgot:

Give kids bath.

Vacuum the cat.

scrape bubble gum off kitchen floor

Explain to kids why they are no longer allowed gum.

Read bed time stories.

Just as you are about to sit down with a decent book, stand up to cry of "Daddy..."

Get glass of water for shouter.

Vacuum cat again (what the hell, you need the exercise).

Wash dishes that have accumulated since tuesday night (dammit, I'm not gonna let them stack up like this any more!)

Go through fridge, throw out anything that is moldy, or may evolve a higher intelligence than your boss (thus the mold of course).

Goddammit! Now there's another stack of dishes! Kristallmighty! Am I the only one who does dishes around...ah fugeddaboutit.

Go to bed.

Get woken at three am by three year old who breaks three months of dry nights by trying to reproduce Noahic flood.

Change sheets.

Discover three year old sprawled out over your entires side of bed.

Climb into childs bed, smelling faintly of pee (damm, you didn't lysol the plastic sheet..get up and do it? Nah, just sleep with vague urinary references in dreams)

Saturday should be fun.

DAMN DAMN DAMN I'm GOing home tomorrow not today. Or I would go tonight. Why couldnt there be a show next friday. I'll be home then. I guess I have to wait till May. AHHHH!! :( Maybe I can go see a taping of Who's line instead. LOL!!

Posted by: DaleJrBlueEyes at March 8, 2002 09:52 AM

Actually, Wil, here's the true test to see if you're old. Are you going to need an afternoon nap to be able to stay up and do the show at 10 PM?

Posted by: olafandy jon at March 8, 2002 09:52 AM

Afternoon nap.... ROTF!

Posted by: colin at March 8, 2002 10:01 AM

Colin-I knew you'd have to be here eventually! :)

Posted by: olafandy jon at March 8, 2002 10:03 AM

You refer to afternoon naps as if they're a bad thing, when in fact they're one of life's best simple pleasures.

that and the wine

Posted by: jbay at March 8, 2002 10:06 AM

jbay, noooooo way! I'd kill to have an afternoon nap. My boss usually has other plans for me though...

Posted by: olafandy jon at March 8, 2002 10:08 AM

umm, I'd love a morning nap right now, thankyouverymuch. don't think my boss would appreciate it though.

can i go home? please?

Posted by: sarcastic cheese at March 8, 2002 10:08 AM

Vickie,
It's Friday and your boyfriend's home. You ought to be able to take off!

Tell your boss I said it's okay for you to go home

Posted by: olafandy jon at March 8, 2002 10:12 AM

People go out on Friday nights? hmmm maybe I should try that out one Friday night. Since I am far away from the LA area, I won't get to see the show. If I can stay awake long enough, I will try to watch your sis!

Can I go home too? Please?

Posted by: stacey at March 8, 2002 10:15 AM

Are you ever going to come over to England

I know its cold and its wet but it's not that bad honest, and if you do come over don't just go to London, there are some lovely places in England like Newcastle and Durham.

Bill Bryers (comical book writer) said 'If you've never been to Durham you should go its a beauty to behold. I'll even give you my car' or at least something along those lines.

Lets start a petition to get wil in England

olfandy jon - you know, if my co-worker hadn't left town for a funeral, I would've taken today off. But, seeing as I have to cover both her job and mine while she's gone, I can't go home. I only got 5 hours left. Hopefully they'll pass by quickly.

But, I'll tell my boss what you said. I'm sure, because you said so, that it'll be ok with him. Thanks pal, I owe ya one!

Posted by: sarcastic cheese at March 8, 2002 10:23 AM

ya know, I think sometime in the 2 or so hours I did sleep last night someone put one of those hideous slug-like things from Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan in my ear and that's why I have this ear ache.

Dammit - I hate when that happens. Anyone got a phaser to kill this damn thing when it comes out?

Posted by: sarcastic cheese at March 8, 2002 10:27 AM

Naps? Naps? It's 10:20 am... can I go ahead and take my afternoon nap now? After all, I was just reminded by a 19 year old that I *am* awfully old now... =sigh= Pass the Depends...

Bruno Kirby. "He first garnered attention for several appearances as a fast-talking wheeler-dealer student who staged a banana eating contest on "Room 222". " Mmmmm.....Karen Valentine and a banana eating contest. Sounds like an entertaining Friday night plan to me.

Posted by: Fred Fowler at March 8, 2002 10:43 AM

Thanks for the planning of my Friday night calender Uncle Willie. Except I am in Oklahoma and cant even get the show. Oh well...looks like leftovers and laundry for me ;)

No seriously, Good luck on the show, and have fun. I'll try to swing by when I (if I) ever visit LA.

By the way, does Uncle Willie even read these posts after the first few?

Posted by: Frank at March 8, 2002 10:43 AM

Me, sarcastic? Nahhhh, would never happen. who do you think you're talking to here?

oh wait.

Posted by: sarcastic cheese at March 8, 2002 10:43 AM

OK, kids, follow the link to Amanda Wheaton's imdb filmography. Short but sweet, looks like she'll be appearing on tonight's First Monday as a character named "Jennifer Evans"

Posted by: T at March 8, 2002 10:43 AM

Ahh, darn it. I wish I could fly across the country and see a show. I'm sure it would kick ass. Oh well, there's always tomorrow, right? I've got tons of plans this weekend. Today's my birthday! So defintely no doing dishes or washing laundry (I planned ahead and did it all on Wednesday). TGIF!

Posted by: Courtney at March 8, 2002 10:59 AM

Not to be ignorant and/or repetitious, but could we get some more info on Wil's sister? I can't find Amy or Amanda Wheaton on IMDB, nor can I find a character named Jennifer Evans on tonight's First Monday listing. Is the info not there, or is my serious lack of coffee interfering with my ability to work my computer?

Hope everyone has a great weekend, in whatever they do!!

*shudder*

OK, that was mean-I apologize.

But now having seen Amy's IMDB entry, don't you think Wil should be taken to task for Amy also being in "The Curse?" I mean after all, aren't big brothers supposed to protect their little sisters from things like that? :)

Posted by: olafandy jon at March 8, 2002 12:36 PM

It's not my birthday today. Not until the 31st. I get to go see KITH around my birthday..It's a bday present.

Posted by: Pmacca01 at March 8, 2002 12:44 PM

olafandy jon: Um...no, no, not at all. Big brothers are supposed to do things
like get their little sisters into things like "The Curse," so that
years later, they can laugh hysterically, and say things like,
"Damn, Sis, I *still* can't believe you fell for the "truly artistic"
line! hahahahaha! You actually thought that because I was in it too,
that meant it was good! hahahahahaha!!!"

You really have to have siblings to truly appreciate things like that, though.

Oh...um...not that I'm saying "The Curse" WASN'T "truly artistic" or
anything...just trying to make a point about siblings. I'm sure "The Curse" was a
really fine film.

Wow, Wil, your sister is my age and she's on TV doing a role in a hit series. And...I'm here... underachieving.

Lovely. I feel much better about my life now. :)

j/k I'll be sure to watch tonight.

Posted by: KB at March 8, 2002 12:51 PM

Don't worry KB. I'm sure there are actors out there who may feel that they are underachieving as well. Remember only 5% of SAG members work in a given year. How many actors went from a successful series and then (blah) were relegated to Love Boat only because theat's all that was available? As long as you are filling your life with a variety of activities, there is no underachieving. Right?

Posted by: JohnnyA at March 8, 2002 12:57 PM

Mrs. Veteran: Point very well taken! :)

I guess my problem was that I was the youngest, so I was the guy would would have fallen for that!

But if I were the oldest, I would not have done something like that to my younger siblings.

Really...

I'm serious...

Aw, who am I kidding....

Posted by: olafandy jon at March 8, 2002 12:58 PM

I'm a First Monday fan. For the last couple of weeks, Blockbuster has been airing a comercial with a hamster and a rabbit ("That's entretainment!"). Catch it if you can.
I hope I can catch Amy. I have a hunch that she portrays the daughter of the coma patient.

Posted by: anamarylee at March 8, 2002 01:14 PM

I love that commercial! I found out that the hamster is voiced by Jim Belushi and the rabbit is James Woods. For some reason, that made it even funnier to me.

I think I've set a personal record for number of posts for a single blog entry. :)

Posted by: olafandy jon at March 8, 2002 01:19 PM

Posted by: KJB at March 8, 2002 01:22 PM

olafandy jon: Thanks for the names! I knew the voices were familiar but I just couldn't place them. I swear, first time I saw it, I laughed so hard, it hurt, one of those laughs that you end up with tears down your face. The funniest thing, I recognize the hamster's moves from Flashdance. Gotta love it when that kind of humor seeps into prime time.

Posted by: anamarylee at March 8, 2002 01:41 PM

If anyone knows a webpage with a video capture of the commercial, plese post it here or email me. I want to have it on my computer, just for a laugh when I'm feeling down.

Noone's asked the most important questions yet.

1. Mr. Wheaton (SIR!), is your sister hot?

2. Is she legal?

It's sad that I have to ask these questions. THIS is what happens when Roughy and Spudnuts and Jun and Jerhanner aren't fulfilling their duties.

And you too, Rob.

I'm horribly disappointed.

Posted by: jadis at March 8, 2002 04:50 PM

Mr. Wheaton, I was wondering. Now that I saw Stand By Me I was wondering, do you feel different when you see a younger version of yourself when you were playing Gordie, the deeply saddened kid who thinks his brother died because of him. What do you think connect to this character than others you have played over the years? Is it more of your realistic side or more because of story-telling?

Does any of this connect with friends you made during the 1980s, like Corey Feldman or River Phoenix. Did something in your heart bring you to having a great filming Stand By Me with these talented actors before?

I'm down here behind the Orange Curtain, but I need an excuse to get up to L.A. I won't see ya tonight, but I look forward to next time.

Hey, check the shirt for cat pee before you leave the house this time. :p

Okay, you know you're an overworked grad student when you're researching in the library, have been there for 5 hours without a break and lots of work yet to go, and an undergrad library work-study assistant comes up to you and says, "I'm sorry, but you have to leave now, we're closing," and you look back at him with a shocked expression and say "what do you mean, it's still early," and he says "yeah, but it's Friday night!" ...and it takes you a moment before you realize what he means.

I need a life! (or at least my M.A. degree) :-)

Yeah, so I just watched Stand By Me on some old channel, and got an intense urge to search for the lovable little geek (With all due respect, of course). Hence my presence at this..er..interesting site. I must admit, this is really something. Whether or not that's meant a compliment.. I'll let you be the judge. Heh. Anyway, Mr. Wil Wheaton, I adore your wittiness, and sarcastic outlook. You're me, with 'outdoor plumbing'. Ha.. Granted you ever read this, that is. I bet some cyber-sillies are laughing their bored little posteriors off at the girl who took the time to type out an entire paragraph, consisting mainly of run ons, and what would be: meaningless chatter. Joy, a phone call! Maybe I won'tbe home, and bored tonight...
I shall now take my leave. Ta.

Oh, and good luck with your handy-ass crack, and such.

Posted by: Mentally Adroit at March 8, 2002 06:56 PM

although i appreciated the suggestions, i decided to watch nearly 4 hours worth of 'next generation' reruns ...good episodes, but i have to say this. that episode 'conspiracy'...

*yuck*

that had to be the *sickest* thing i've ever seen. i swear, i nearly passed out twice. the thing with the gills and the exploding head and the rotting chest cavity...and those bowls full of squirmy things and the crunching...good lord

i don't consider myself squemish, but...eww :-)

but aside from that, nice site you have here mr. wheaton...glad i stumbled across it like i did

First of all, sorry I am nowhere near L.A., so sadly cannot see your show tonight. But hey, was just thinking the other day, I wonder if Wil has siblings, and are any of them in the biz. Now I have my answer. Missed First Monday this week, will definitely try for next week. Does Amy have the same surname?
Funny you should mention Friday nights. Mine are usually v. much like the one you mentioned, except tonight had dinner with two great old friends of mine, then when watching TNN for TNG later, it was the "Family" episode - which always totally makes me cry anyway, but soon I will be leaving T.O. and moving back to the city of my birth and being really close with my family and old friends, so really got to me. And hey it does of course feature that beautiful scene with Wes and his holographic dad.

All the best with your comedy gig, which in my time zone, actually hasn't even started yet.

Cheers,

The Duchess

Okay, let me spell this out AGAIN: this. website. is. not. for. children. or. people. who. act. like. children.

I am leaving for the theatre right now. I'd better not see any more of this shit when I get back.

You know, back in the day, Spudnuts would be doing all the irreverent posting, and I'd be doing all the long-winded thoughtful magilla, and flame wars just wouldn't happen.

Or at the very least, JSc wouldn't be forced to quiz Wil about his own sister's hotness, which is like asking Yoko to do a Beatles tribute album.

Okay, maybe it isn't.

Come to think of it, I have no idea where this post was going.

Oh, forget it.

Anyway, I missed the flame war.

But what the hell was there even to flame about?

Damn, I hate it when I miss the big stuff.

Wow-looks like I missed something big. Oh well, I was returning to add on to my personal record for posts on an entry.

Gotta love the internet, where a flame war can break out anywhere, anytime from almost nothing at all!

Posted by: olafandy jon at March 8, 2002 10:18 PM

Hmmm...10:25 PM PST...wonder how the show's going...

Posted by: olafandy jon at March 8, 2002 10:25 PM

I was right, Amy did play the daughter of the coma patient. I wish I could get a video shot of her, but my camera is on the fritz.

Posted by: anamarylee at March 8, 2002 10:30 PM

Wow, I guess Wil had an "interesting" day and I missed it. The proverbial sh*t hit the fan and everything, oh well. I to remember when Friday's meant excitement. Not anymore, now Monday's are my favorite day because the kids are back in school and I don't have little "rugrats" knocking on my door at 8 in the blessed morning asking, "Can I play?" . I have just one word for them NO! Then in my mind I go to their house and throttle their parents for letting them out at such an early hour on a Saturday morning. When in actuality their parents probably don't know they even left the house. ARRRGH oh well just another thing to add to the list of thing that make me go, "HMMMMMMMMMMMM" Good night all :)

Wow, your journal is pretty cool. I use a few livejournal ones on several websites I work on. They are fun. Your website is well designed. I found the link thru Cafe Press.

Damn. I missed the flame war and everything. GO out for a couple of hours... Oh well. A good turnout for the weekend thus far. What was originally intended for a night of studying (hahahaha... I know) turned into a night of drinking. WEEEEEEEE! Too bad I'm working a 10 hour shift tomorrow that starts at 3pm. UGH.

Posted by: KJB at March 8, 2002 11:48 PM

The daughter of the coma patient? I'm not sure I saw her. I only semi-watched the show. I wanted Amy to be the "teenage" girl with the Catholic-school looking outfit on, if only because her father kissed her and said "Uncle Willie says hello."

Posted by: tammy at March 8, 2002 11:57 PM

hahaha... that would have been hilarious. Uncle Willie says hello. to amy. hahahaha. :)

flame war? missed it. i was too busy adjusting my goddamned tin-foil hat.

Posted by: hot soup girl at March 9, 2002 03:10 AM

It's sad that I have to ask these questions. THIS is what happens when Roughy and Spudnuts and Jun and Jerhanner aren't fulfilling their duties.

See what happens when I leave the country for a farking week?

So, anyway, I'm in Shannon at the aeroport about to find some food to kick the nasty Durty Nellie's sing-a-long hangover I've got...and trying desperately to find some FTP software somewhere so I can get this CD full of photos up, but I've got to know...

Wil, you've got a sister?

Seriously?

Dude, just say she doesn't look like Screech in drag like that movie that you were in as his boyfriend or something.

Please, please say that she ain't Screech.

Dunno if I axed it first, but I gotsta know:

Yous gots some pixtures?

Posted by: Roughy at March 9, 2002 03:21 AM

random thought: wheaton in a kevin smith production.

Posted by: wargoddess at March 9, 2002 03:29 AM

Wil, I out rank you by maybe a year or two... and my Friday nights are perhaps even more pathetic. Yes... it can get worse the older you get!

They consist of...
Finish work
Socialise with my housemates
Spend quality time with my dog - which means she gets patted and I get RSI
Go shopping, argue with housemates over what to eat
Go to video store and argue with housemates over what video to get
Cook
Sometimes open a bottle of wine
Eat, drink, get very merry while watching Christ knows what crap
Try to convince my dog that her rug in the loungeroom is far more comfy than daddies lap (she's a HUGE dog)
Bitch slap fights with the only girl in the house - we do it because it amuses us... remember... I'm sad
Then... surprise... the Internet and wishing to everything Holy and otherwise I hadn't met some freak in a chat room I was bored enough to visit, who thinks they're the most interesting crettin on the planet just because they got back from a nightclub - yeah, in your dreams geek boy
Then bed

The saddest thing... I actually enjoy my Friday nights!

Do I win a Sony Play Station?

Posted by: Jarryd at March 9, 2002 04:59 AM

wargoddess-I'm telling ya, if Kevin Smith actually does his Fletch prequel, I would think he would probably be looking for a young smartass type that can bring the funny (See the Jay and Silent Bob entry where I buried a comment like that somewhere. )Doesn't that sound like a potential Wheaton?

I suppose Wil would have to want to do it...

Posted by: olafandy jon at March 9, 2002 06:09 AM

yah. wheaton would most definitely make an interesting fletch. sorta like.. the daily planet's jimmy olsen meets harrison ford. im sorry but that's just so sexy to me. heh..

Posted by: wargoddess at March 9, 2002 06:24 AM

Thanks, Gary for posting the ER screencap link.

While we're on the subject of bragging about little sisters, I'll mention that _my_ lil' sis is a background player on ER, has been for a couple seasons now...

I doubt that any of those screencaps will feature the background folks, but it will be fun looking.

Hello Uncle Willie and friends,

First I'm making my lame declaration that may sound like a broken record to you folks here: Love the site, this is my first posting, i'm addicted to this site, blah, blah, blah....

Whew with that aside, I just wanted to propose that Kevin and Wil bring their show for a run out here in NYC! Wish I could go out there to LA. Aw, I'll be thinkin' of all the fun I'm missing every Friday for the next few weeks!

Anywhooo - keep up the good work mio amigo!

Cheers!

Posted by: veranyc at March 9, 2002 06:50 AM

hi spike just like to say i want will to come to the Uk too...but for one thing the writer you are talking about is Bill Bryson.....and for another if he's to come anywhere he should come to the best place..LIVERPOOL!! which with be capital of culture in years to come! You are the weakest link goodbye!!

Posted by: andrea at March 9, 2002 06:55 AM

olafandy jon: Jason Lee has already been cast as Fletch for the movie. I think it's a good choice and fits with the fact that Kevin likes to reuse a lot of the same main actors in his movies.

However, Wil in a Kevin Smith film would most definitely kick ass. I don't see how it couldn't.

Posted by: Josh at March 9, 2002 07:37 AM

Why does evryone call Wil "Uncle Willy?"

And whats with that screen name tvswilwheaton, you never go on it and where did all the other comments with the fighting go?

Posted by: Sunbeam at March 9, 2002 08:57 AM

Good show Wil :)

Posted by: mcfoo at March 9, 2002 09:09 AM

Posted by: Chelsey at March 9, 2002 10:55 AM
