May 03, 2002Small WonderToday's title comes from The Vandals album "Fear of a Punk Planet." One of the true classics, if you ask me. Doctor update: I have a sinus infection, and the doc put me on antibiotics. I didn't want to take them, but he agreed to dance around me with a stick chanting the theme to Knight Rider if I did, so we compromised. I have heeded countless email requests, and I've put up an eBay auction. It's an 8x10 of me in the spiffy red spacesuit. Interesting fact about this photo: it's the only one of me from TNG that I really like. Of all the publicity photos I ever did, I think I look the least lame in this one. The auction is set for 5 days. Also, I've updated the library selections on the right side over there. I was going to let them stay for another week or so...but when I saw that Hitchhiker's Guide was out, I couldn't wait. I am such a geek. So check it out: if this auction goes well, I can totally buy a GPS, and start geocaching...how cool would it be to make a WWDN geocaching team? I'm taking the kids to see Spiderman tonight. I hope it doesn't suck. Funny, isn't it? In a post-Episode I world, every time I get excited about a big movie opening, I am reminded of how ripped off and angry I was when I left that movie, and my excitement is tempered...then I recall how much I loved X-Men, and my excitement rises again...and then, while I'm basking in that warm feeling...I remember Jar-Jar, and [whine] "My name is Anakin, and I'm a peson!" [/whine] Well, at the very least, Kirsten Dunst is hot. :-) Oh, and speaking of hot...maybe Episode II won't be so bad after all. Meow. I'm off to work now. I hope everyone has a great weekend! Oh, and....GO LAKERS! Comments
Having just gotten out of the hospital, I can agree that being sick sucks. Of course, a sinus infection and having a necessary internal organ on the verge of exploding are slightly different. Still, I have an abundance of good will 'get better' wishes to share. Which also reminds me that for a birthday and get well soon present, my friend promised me a visit from Spike from Buffy. Then he told me 'He was a bit pricey, so I'll just get you Wil Wheaton instead'. Which of course prompted me to state that it was all cool, we could all sit around and well WWDN stories and my spouse would have no clue what we were blathering on about. Of course, if Spike were here, it'd be the same thing, only Buffy. Posted by: Misty at May 3, 2002 11:10 AM*laugh* X-Men *did* rock (it is the only movie I've ever gone to where legions of people exited saying, "It didn't suck!" and meant that as enormously high praise), and I'm a terrible heathen, but I really didn't hate Jar-Jar that much. I'm convinced it's because I didn't see the Star Wars movies until I was more or less an adult and I don't have these glorious shining memories of the movies from when I was a kid. I really thought PM was a perfectly fine Star Wars movie. (I did say I was a heathen.) I'm trying not to have too high hopes for Spider-Man. I'd rather be surprised like I with X-Men. ('course, I'm still going to opening night like a slavering fanboy. er. girl.) Posted by: catie at May 3, 2002 11:19 AMHey Wil, let us know how you liked Spiderman, so we know if it's any good. Have fun... Posted by: Gabe at May 3, 2002 11:20 AMAw darn! And i was soo close to being the first to post!!! You are a brave man to be going to see Spiderman I wanted to be Spiderman growing up. If this movie sucks, I will have to find a new hero. (Good to see people aside from my co-workers and I appreciate the glory of "You Are Being Lied To" though. :> ) Posted by: Oddreigh at May 3, 2002 11:22 AMohh spiderman... again, the whole college thing keeps me from seeing it... being poor sucks big balls. maybe i'll be able to find someone to take me... there's a thought. stand on a corner in my spiderman panties, holding a sign... then again, maybe not. get well soon, wil. :) Posted by: Jess Lat at May 3, 2002 11:24 AMSinus infections bite. I had one last week and the right side of my face felt like it had been run over by a tractor (I'm a Kansan). At one point, one side of my lip swelled up. I look like a cock-eyed Angelina Jolie. If only both my lips would have swelled...I'd have been a hottie... Posted by: Toonces at May 3, 2002 11:50 AMTell me how the movie is. I can't see it tonight, unfortuntately, but I hope I get to see it tomorrow. BTW, Hitchhiker's Guide is fucking awesome. But strangely enought, I've never heard any of Soul Coughing's music. Any comparisons or at least descriptions of their music? Posted by: Pmacca01 at May 3, 2002 11:56 AMI'm stubborn about taking medicine, too... but I usually give in, and then I'm shocked when I get better. (; I guess I've been so jaded by HMO death-care that it surprises me when something works. On to Episode II... I'm curious, but I can wait until the lines die down. However..there's a HUGE Star Wars convention up in Indianapolis this weekend - it looks like a load of fun! But again, I'm waiting until Sunday, when the lines die down. (; I'm really glad that the movie's coming out though, because it's sparked a lot of interest in kendo... so I'm hoping to see a boost in membership this year. Posted by: kendoka at May 3, 2002 11:57 AMWil, Wil, Wil, Wil...I am very ashamed. You should not have bought antibiotics. It's merely a quick fix at the cost of your immune system. Plus doctors know its not really needed but they figure people will buy it anyways and any excuse to make a buck. If it's not life and death you should let your body heal itself! But if you need to be in top shape for work then yes take them and heal. But if I were you I would just do as little work as possible and the rest of the time wear three layers of clothes, drink lots of tea, and sleep a lot. It might sound cliche but if you don't push yourself, your body will rejuvenate quicker. Posted by: Fallulah at May 3, 2002 12:01 PMSpider-man, Spider-man, http://www.psnw.com/~venom/slink.html I love Spiderman, but I am afraid that the movie might suck, too, because I hold the firm belief that the amount of promotion for a film is directly proportionate to the level of suckage. Still, I will probably see it sometime next week. Posted by: trishpip at May 3, 2002 12:01 PMI'd definitely like to see a WWDN Geocaching team. I got the same idea you did when I saw the link you posted yesterday. I just listed a whole bunch of Minidisc, Gameboy and PDA equipment on Ebay to make the money to buy myself a GPS. I was hoping my dad would let me borrow his since I'm going to visit him next weekend, but his cost around $700 and he said there was no way in hell I was traipsing around the woods with it. Posted by: Ivee at May 3, 2002 12:03 PMDAMMIT! I went and looked at the eBay auction, and I am outraged. That's right: OUTRAGED! I would have seriously paid extra to have the photo signed, "Dear Bubba, I loved being your bitch." Once again, you've managed to suck all the joy out of my life, Wil Wheaton! Damn Youuuuuuuuu!!!!! I've seen a lot of those comicbook crossovers and they usually aren't any good. Nice pic. Posted by: Justin at May 3, 2002 12:34 PMI have a positive outlook towards Spider-man. I should, I bought my ticket yesterday. From what I've seen so far it looks like it will be fantastic. Not to mention the talent involved (Maguire, Dunst, Dafoe) are better than average. I personally see Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker, I think he'll do a great job. Episode II should be better than Ep. I because Lucas smartened up and made some drastic changes like cutting back on merchandising and marketing, almost eliminating Jar Jar (Jar Jar does something pivotal in this one in his short role, but I'm not gonna ruin it for you like it was ruined for me)and hiring a co-writer to reign him in and strengthen the script. I haven't let myself get overexcited about any movie ever since I was subjected to Star Trek V,"the quest for god"(or a miracle to save this wreck) Man, that was so bad I couldn't watch an episode of TOS for at least two years! Good thing TNG was on the air, or I would have had a Trekless existence from that point on. And thanks for the geocaching link, now I have this burning desire to get a GPS! lol Posted by: tskll at May 3, 2002 12:37 PMIt does suck that we're all so jaded about the Big Summer Movie now, doesn't it? This week's FoxTrots have been awesome with Jason in his Spiderman, er, Spider-Man kick. Can't wait to see what he pulls out for Episode II week! I know what you mean about antibiotics. They're way overused. Someday the world will be wiped out by a little bug that developed an resistance to antibiotics. No, really, I'm not paranoid... Posted by: soapbox jon at May 3, 2002 12:39 PMWe actually discuss that (bacteria resistent to antibiotics) in my biological anthropology class. It's incredibly disturbing if you let it get to you. Especially if you just had oral surgery... I must go and be paranoid now. Criminy Pete at http://www.geocities.com/criminypete will cry for a week if Spider-Man isn't good. Posted by: KJB at May 3, 2002 12:48 PMWil, The ebay picture looks a little like, "So baby, what's your sign?" I can't believe it's your favorite publicity photo. I'm sure that there has to be a better one than that. Maybe it's because you look a little like how Jonathan Frakes character, Commander Will Riker, acted on the show. Yep, a real ladies man... Posted by: charity at May 3, 2002 12:58 PMAre you sure that the title from this post didn't come from the "great" syndicated classic, "Small Wonder", starring V.I.C.I., the little girl robot? Posted by: Interplanet Janet at May 3, 2002 01:30 PMIt's not really the same, Natalie Portman in Episode 1 and Kirsten Dunst in Spiderman. Natalie Portman was always seen wearing layer upon layer upon layer of clothing. Kirsten wears a fairly flimsy shirt and gets soaking wet. Episode 1 was definitely a gyp. Last year around this time I was laying in ICU with double pneumonia and blood poisoning because my doctor didn't want to prescribe antibiotics earlier in the week when I saw him for my cough. By the time I came back to to the doctor I was dehydrated as well. 5 days of double arm IV antibiotics, cathethers, forced oxygen, and $58,000 I endured for the silly notion that anti biotics are bad. If you get sick, it is best to fix it before it gets bad. Don't get antibiotics for every little scrape, but use them correctly for infection and there is no problem. Who out there with a career and young kids is in top physical shape? Be sensible, not fanatical. Posted by: Argyle at May 3, 2002 03:47 PMWil...Don't you think it's damn hypoctritical to have anti-corporate books on your front page and have them link to amazon? Amazon is just an overpriced, sorry excuse for an online store, not to mention their history of employee abuse. Don't bother rolling your eyes or blowing this off - I'm not asking you to give all your money to chairty, only to google the items you recommend and let some smaller online store get some traffic and business from your so-called leftleaning site. Just call it "wil's online store of the week" or something. It's easy to blow this off, but you really should consider it. Posted by: sada at May 4, 2002 05:37 AMWil, GO SPURS GO!! Take care, Greetings! You will never guess how I stumbled onto this site. I was google-izing the phrase "wheat grass," and this link popped up. (it honed in on "Wheat"...not sure how the "grass" part got in there.) Being one of those "old-time" Star Trek fans, I had to take a look. What a hysterical site. Wil, you definately have funny--oh yeah, you got funny. However, when I saw that pic on Ebay, it reminded me off a chant we used in college when watching reruns (and drinking beer) of the original Star Trek... "Character in Red will soon be dead." Remember how an "away team" would be sent off, and the new face, or "character in red," would always seem to perish... Oh, about the sinus infection--here is something you can try. Neti pot. No, no, nothing illegal involved. However, it is a bit gross. I won't put the details here...just Google-ize it! Another thing is using essential oil of lavendar and rosemary to clear the passages (rub on temples and around nose--warm baths/showers are good as well). Some nice yarrow tea would help, too. Disclaimer: I am a stay home mom, not a medical doctor--so use above advice at your own risk. You can add doctors with sticks singing the theme to "Welcome Back Kotter" if you need some extra umpfh! Great site, Wil. I'm adding it to my list of favorites... Now, on to find some wheat grass for real. Peace, I really liked Spiderman, too. All I will say about it is that it's nice to see a movie based on a comic that the makers of the film read, liked, and knew. In fact, not only did I catch WHICH comic they were referring to, but the "What If" comic it eventually inspired. Joygasm! Posted by: Rob Matsushita at May 4, 2002 07:59 AMSPIDER WHOOOOOOOO? Ottawa all the way! Posted by: hulk at May 4, 2002 12:44 PMThat guy in the red spacesuit looks like a punk. Too much attitude. Posted by: synchronicity at May 4, 2002 03:06 PMSPIDER-MAN ROCKS!!! It did NOT suck!!! As I was asked by two guys who were in line to wait an hour for the 4:50 show... "was it better than the first Superman?" HELL YES!!!! Go and enjoy!!! Summer blockbuster season has started! ***THE BEEJ*** Posted by: Beverly Martin at May 4, 2002 03:08 PMOh, you were not lame. Quit fishing for compliments. ;) Posted by: Claire at May 4, 2002 03:20 PMI had a GPS. Sold it. Should get another to try geocaching. It's actually rather like what my friends and I came up with where we drive to a spot, then call everyone with the coordinates and see who can get there fastest. And about the antibiotics, they're evil but necessary sometimes. Having spent a good chunk of April in hospital in agonizing pain that the *wrong* antibiotic made worse was not fun. But it was more fun once they realized, switched the antibiotics and were able to do the surgery I needed. Now I have one more surgery on May 17th and after that I should be the healthiest of Mistys. Posted by: Misty at May 4, 2002 03:33 PMWhat's with the fake-looking tan in the ebay photo? Can't wait to see Spider man AND Episode II. Indeed, it is a good month for movies. And today I get to say May the Fourth Be with you. Hi Wil! I think the pic of you wearing the 'real' TNG uniform is very cool. Too bad that I can't find more photos of it over the net. It looks better than this blue overall which zipper couldn't be totally closed at the backside... (however, during the tng-series you looked best in 'The Game') :)) far out Posted by: outta site at May 4, 2002 08:00 PMstill waiting to be picked for the team....damn this evil gym class ;-) Posted by: jessie at May 4, 2002 09:12 PMJust saw the movie... Yup, it rocked. A few minor comic-book-guy quibbles (which I won't repeat here, since we're saving the "the lone gunmen are dead" until Monday, I guess...), but the effects were awesome and the story was more or less true to the original. Afterwards, in the mens' room, I overheard the following exchange, which pretty well sums up the "relationship" part of the movie: Guy at 1st urinal: So... didja think it was cool? Guy at 2nd urinal: Yeah... [thoughtful pause] He shoulda f@#%ed her, though. Guy at 1st urinal: Yeah. Posted by: da Schmiz at May 5, 2002 12:53 AMHi Wil, Just read about your auction and your geocaching plans? Maybe next time, you should not auction your photo, but the GPS coords of the photo? Regards Posted by: Roalt at May 5, 2002 02:29 AMThat's a good idea. I'll stick one of those silly trading TNG cards in a cache sometime. Heh. :) Posted by: wil at May 5, 2002 02:33 AMIs it just me or did Wil look 35 in that TNG picture? anyone, I wouldn't get your hopes up about Hitchhiker's movie, if it's the same on I own. It's pretty bad. Done in that "70's sci-fi" style where every ship is done in vinyl siding, for some reason or another. It's a little nostalgic, and kind of cute if you're a die-hard, but it is over-all dissappointing, and for some reason goes through a bit of the second book as well. Posted by: Andy at May 5, 2002 02:54 AMSinus infections suck, I just got off one. From what I've been hearing around here (central KS), its going to be a bad year for allergies. Good luck with it all. Posted by: Russ at May 5, 2002 08:33 AMSpiderman ROCKED. It was SOOOOO close to perfect and Roger Ebert just doesn't GET it. Feel better Wil. Posted by: Brian at May 5, 2002 11:01 AMHey Wil, Wil, I just have to tell you a funny story. I have been hanging out with my friend's cousin lately and he looks just like you when you were younger. You know in Stand By Me how your top lip would get a bit puffy and overshadow your bottom lip? His does that a lot. Anyways...before I start sounding too obsessive. I was talking to my boss about this guy (his name is Rob) and I mentioned he looks like Wil Wheaton. And he went...he looks like a chick? I was a little confused and he said...well you said he looked like Wooween. I burst out laughing. I tried explaining who you are and how your name is spelt and what relation you are to Rob. But he just gets overly confused and we just end up saying...Wooween a lot. Posted by: Fallulah at May 5, 2002 01:39 PMWill, Wil, i saw a commercial about this award show that's going to be on NBC, and that the Star Trek cast will be reuniting again there, are you going to it? Posted by: Mel at May 5, 2002 06:49 PMWow, at $232.50 and two days left to go, you can probably buy a GPS for everyone in the family. Tell Paramount to check out e-bay and see what you're really worth. Posted by: obla-d at May 5, 2002 07:59 PMJust wanted to add that I'm glad to see KatieBoo say that she feels odd being on a first name basis, I thought that I was the only one who felt that way. Posted by: jessie at May 5, 2002 09:38 PMHello all! Spider-Man was freaking AWESOME!! Im soooo glad it didnt suck. I cant wait to see what you have to say about, Wil. Another thing: GO SPURS! I know they lost today they are my team. I hope they win the next game. I never liked the lakers. *vanishes* Posted by: GreenEyes The Official CAT of Violence at May 5, 2002 10:50 PMAll I want to know is how you managed the Las Vegas-like ubertan in that publicity photo. And yes, a big ten-four on being sick and it's level of suckiness. I drove for a half hour to get my guitar player for band practice. Then drove forty minutes to practice. Practiced for an hour (think punk songs sound snotty? Imagine if the lead singer has a head cold.), then another forty minutes to the guitar player's house, then a half hour to my house. It's ultra anti-productive when you spend more time in your car then in practice. Yeah, my band's punk and today we sounded like ish. Posted by: PJ at May 5, 2002 11:15 PMWil, don't sell yourself short, I have seen many thought I'd send you a "thought" to think on... "The tragedy of life doesn't lie in not reaching your goal. The tragedy lies in having no goal to reach." but you already know this, don't ya get well soonest, a fan Wil is selling his "Elvis" picture on Ebay! I feel faint... Smeling salts anyone..? Posted by: SpaceCadet at May 6, 2002 05:51 AMI thought the title was from the 80s sitcom of the same name. Sorry about the sickness. I just got over the flu not long ago. I barley had the strength to take the dog out. I hope I can stay away from the media until I see "Spiderman" next weekend. I don't want anyone ruining the movie for me. Posted by: David at May 6, 2002 06:44 AMWil, It seems to be directly related to all our darkest fears... Oh the Horror. The Horror... Posted by: tskll at May 6, 2002 08:52 AMHolland is shocked. Everyone is complaining about there little illnesses. I even done that but after this I am very quiet. A politician Pim Fortuyn has been killed by a stupid man. Why does this happen?? Should this be happening??? NO offcourse not but looking at television it is happening and it is making me very angry. Desame anger I felt at 11th september 2001.
I was really hoping that the title of this post was related to the short-lived 80's sit-com of the same name. Good ol' mechanically voiced Vickie and her lame-ass brother Jamie. Her love is real, but she is not.... Posted by: stacy at May 6, 2002 11:18 AMCome on now, The Phantom Menace wasn't that bad if you took it in the Context of it being an introduction of the characters. They are supposed to be six films not just one. So give me a break, besides it has a really great Light Sabre fight. I've read the book for Ep. II and if the movie even remotely goes along with the book, it's going to be FREAKING AWESOME. But you have to see the first one to get glimpses into why Anakin is the way he is. Anyway Wil I recall you not liking it when someone tells you they hate your character Wesley on Star Trek, and proceeds to tell you why. So how do you think Jake Lloyd feels when people gripe about him being in Ep. I. He's a lot younger than you were and I think he did an amazing job. Okay so I'm a major geek but I just thought I'd throw in my two cents. I know everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I do respect yours. I hope you get to feeling better. Posted by: cassiejo at May 6, 2002 11:59 AMAm I the only one who thinks that Spider-Man did not rule? Not nearly as much as X-Men anyway, which did in fact rule. It didn't totally suck like Batman 2, 3, and 4 at least, though, and Spider-Man was damn sexy. hey, someone posted about Amazon... have you considered Powell's? Their deal is pretty good: http://www.powells.com/partners/partners.html Gotta admit, Ep I did have one major tick mark in the plus column that none of the other movies will have: Liam Neeson. *slow drool* Posted by: Janis Cortese at May 6, 2002 01:41 PMSpiderman was AWESOME!! Hey and Ep 2 will be sweeterass!! hella SWEET!@# work calls! l8 Posted by: hops at May 6, 2002 02:58 PM{Well, at the very least, Kirsten Dunst is hot. :-)} Recommendation, for you and the missus, -- another KD movie out: "The Cat's Meow". Think of it as "Gosford Park" in 1924 Hollywood. Oh, and Eddie Izzard as Charlie Chaplin. Posted by: LittleGuy at May 7, 2002 04:39 AMI posted this in the movie forum in the soapbox, but it's too amusing not to reiterate elsewhere. Hope you feel better. =) Posted by: mina at May 7, 2002 11:54 AMFear of a Punk Planet is an amazing album. As a lifetime O.C. resident, I think I'm required to love it, though. I stumbled upon this site through a link on greenday.net of all places, and it struck me as really interesting considering the fact that I've got basically the same thing myself, albeit with a certain degree less of celebrity status. I only wish you were powered by livejournal, so I could add you to my friends list. You're a great deal of fun to read. Posted by: Jenna at May 7, 2002 11:35 PMPost a commentThanks for signing in, .
