Misc.

Last night, at the Los Angeles Underground Film Festival Awards Dinner, Jane White is Sick and Twisted won best comedy, and my friend Danica won best new director for her movie Speechless, in which I have a small part.

How cool is that?! I'm in two movies which won awards, and I got to meet Zack Ward, who played Scut Farcus (He had yellow eyes...so help me God, yellow eyes), who was hosting the awards ceremony. It was funny...during the opening of the ceremony, he's reading his prepared jokes, which are really funny, and he looks at me (I was sitting near the stage) and he totally stops and says, "Hey, Wil Wheaton! How you feeling?" The whole room is staring at me, so I say, "Uhhh...singled out." Which is really funny, you see, because I was sitting next to my friend Chris Hardwick, who is not only in Jane White, but also hosted Singled Out on eMpTyVee. Unfortunately, I was the only one in the room who enjoyed the ironic humor.

You know, this is also a good time to share with everyone that Jane White has gotten rave reviews, and has also won quite a few awards! I'm extremely proud of Jane White, because it's the first movie that I've done that is really just 100% comedy (on purpose, unlike The Curse).

When we were done at the awards dinner, Chris talked me into going up the street to The Laugh Factory, because he's friends with Bob Saget, and Saget was doing a set. Now, here's the thing about Saget: He's insanely dirty, profane, raunchy, offensive, and hilarious in person. He is so unlike the stuff he does on TV, and if you ever get a chance to see him, I highly recomend it.

Three random things:

I noticed this morning that searching for "Wheaton" on Google Images gives rather interesting results.

I had an interesting thought about why Geocaching appeals to me so much, especially as an activity to do with the kids: it's about the journey, much more than it is about the destination.

My step-kids have spent so much time around hyper-competitive Little League and Soccer parents and coaches, who put the focus on winning at all costs, rather than just playing (despite what the various organizations claim about sportsmanship) that I want them to be in an environment where their enjoyment is in the doing, rather than based solely on their success. Geocaching puts the focus right where I want it to be, and even if we don't find the cache just taking the hike and spending the time together is awesome.

Some birds are building a nest in my breezeway. I think that's really cool.

Thought for today:

"If you hate your parents, the man or the establishment, don't show them up by getting wasted and wrapping your car around a tree. If you really want to rebel against your parents: outearn them, outlive them, and know more than they do."

That's why people buy Star Wars figures (or at least why I buy Star Wars figures), because it's about the journey, much more than it is about the destination.

Any Westley figures out there?

Posted by: Buntz at May 17, 2002 10:17 AM

lol you said breezeway.
i'll go back to my padded cell and rubberband now...

Posted by: bellwether at May 17, 2002 10:22 AM

Where's the Star Wars Ep2 review?

Posted by: cha0ticz at May 17, 2002 10:27 AM

I have LOTS of "westly "..and Wesley figures
out here...but I won't tell you what I do with
them!!!

And I do not "get" this geocaching thingy.
Yeah I know "what" it is but WHY?

Wil can you explain the attraction?
Sorry..dense about some things.

Posted by: bluecat/redblanket at May 17, 2002 10:28 AM

I think it's cute that someone swiped the WWDN hat out of the geocache to give to their girlfriend cuz she had a crush on you. LOL But I agree with the joy in the doing, not the end.

If that doesn't make much sense, it's because it's Friday afternoon and I've been at work too long. Sigh...

Posted by: Karona at May 17, 2002 10:29 AM

Your comments about soccer/Little League are so true ... my wife's little brother plays baseball and basketball, and she doesn't understand why I don't like going to the games. It isn't that I don't want to support him, but I can't stand being around the parents on either side. I feel bad for the kids, really; how fun is it to have your dad yell at you until you start crying in the outfield?

Posted by: JK at May 17, 2002 10:29 AM

Am I the only one that always thought that the kid in "The Christmas Story" was named *Scott* Farcus? Huh. The education value of reading this blog far exceeds many others.

Posted by: Aarika at May 17, 2002 10:32 AM

Aarika, you are not alone. What kind of name is Scut?

Posted by: Karona at May 17, 2002 10:33 AM

You know, if I could sell enough Can Coolers, I could get a GPS thing, too.

I'd bury a UE cache out in the suburbs of Chicago, too. For real.

Posted by: Roughy at May 17, 2002 10:34 AM

Roughy, at the rate you're giving them away, you'll never make enough money.

Posted by: Karona at May 17, 2002 10:35 AM

Wil how often do you look up yourself on Google?

Just Curious. That is so cute. Hmmm maybe I should look up my name.

Oh wait I have no reason to be anywhere. Dratt!!!

I'm glad you're having fun Wil.

Post your cache soon.

Posted by: Stargazer at May 17, 2002 10:35 AM

I was going to write it as "Scott," but I checked IMDB, and it says "Scut," right there.

Weird.

Posted by: wil at May 17, 2002 10:36 AM

I've been reading up on geocaching since you wrote about it, and I have to admit it sounds pretty cool and I'm thinking about trying it out. My oldest kid is about 2 and a half, so she might not "get" it yet, but I think it would indescribably great to take her on a geocache hunt.

Great though for today, too.

Posted by: Chuggnutt at May 17, 2002 10:37 AM

Maybe it's just a typo cuz his name was "Scat" Farkus. That guy was cool as shit, he even had a toadie.

Why do some people geocache? Who cares? At least a population of geeks are getting some sun.

FanBoy Alert!

Congrats to Wil on "Sick & Twisted"!

Congrats on Danica (http://speechlessthemovie.com/ for her movie and http://www.celebrityblvd.com/danicamckellar/ for her -- I'm *very* impressed by her)!

And before "Titus" goes off the tube forever, catch it for Scut. Very hilarious

Posted by: LittleGuy at May 17, 2002 10:40 AM

COOL! Pics of my alma mater (Wheaton College in IL) are linked to by Wil!

Wil, I know what you mean about "The Journey" when it comes to Geocaching. I just took it up last week and haven't found jack yet, but it's a blast, especially with a group of friends :-)

(sheesh, this is my first response on WWDN, maybe I'll think of something better next time ;-p

Posted by: coondawg at May 17, 2002 10:44 AM

Wil,

You are so dead-on about geocaching. My son and I have gone once and weather permitting will go again this weekend, taking my step-son as well. My son is five, and this was a great adventure to him, !!!treasure hunting!!! Although you only find trinkets and happy meal toys TM, the hike, adventure, and bonding are the real treasure.

Oh and Wil, how can someone in backward ass Kentucky see "Jane White is Sick and Twisted"?????

Posted by: Jessie at May 17, 2002 10:58 AM

"Wil plays Ryan, Dana's lovesick and hopelessly nerdy classmate, who attempts to win Dana's heart by impressing her with his Mongolian rat experiment."

It's so... so... YOU!

(You're not getting typecast here... are you?)

Posted by: Don at May 17, 2002 11:03 AM

I am so glad that Jane White is getting great reviews and winning awards. That is still one movie of yours I haven't seen yet. *goes off to search for it*

And just on the thought of the day. Try doing that with the in-laws. At least mine, they seem to think they know everything, especially my father in law. The only way I found to rebel against him is to yell back, go figure.

But anyway, no kids yet, so I can't try the geocoaching, but it sounds great. Have fun. =)

Posted by: Melissa at May 17, 2002 11:05 AM

Hmm, Wil Wheaton, Chris Hardwick & Zack Ward all in one location. I really wish I was there! I used to watch Singled Out just b/c Chris Hardwick was the host. Congrats to you & your friends on the awards.
I know what you mean about the parents & their kids games. I do know some parents who just try to make it fun for their kids. And they really try to help the other kids whose parents make them cry. Its a shame. I stopped playing organized sports while still young b/c I couldn't stand the attitudes of some people involved. To me it was just about fun. I stopped having fun at some point.
Btw: I once looked up my name on Dogpile. I found an exact match (even her middle name, but spelled differently). She's about 10 years younger & lives one state north. I was pretty amazed.
I have Wesley action figures but I don't think they look like Wil. They look like this guy Darren from my high school Latin class. Really bizarre.
Alright. I need to get back to work. Lunch over!

Posted by: jl at May 17, 2002 11:12 AM

Two more thoughts:
The thought for the day, I love it! I live it.
Second, what do we have to do to keep Titus on the air?

Posted by: jl at May 17, 2002 11:17 AM

Amen about the journey being more important. My family and I are into volksmarching (http://www.ava.org) because it gives us a chance to see new places, hang out with each other for a couple hours, and get some form of exercise.

If I ever have spare money (hahahahaha ... sorry, but that was funny), I'll grab a GPS and go and a geocache too.

Posted by: tj at May 17, 2002 11:51 AM

I wholeheartedly agree with you on the youth sports thing...my question is - why subject your kids to that pressure/negativity at all? Surely you can find other similar activities without all the rudeness & over-competitiveness. I don't know if your kids still enjoy playing under those circumstances (it could very well be that they do), but if it's no longer any fun for them, they it may be worthwhile to look for another "less competitive" league, less-competitive coach or something different altogether.

On the other end of the spectrum, I know soccer leagues that in order to lessen the "competitiveness", (mostly for very young kids), they hold games where they don't keep score. Which I also don't agree with, because that's an integral part of sports. But what I do think is that the way the game is played/handled is largely what the coach & parents make it out to be. *Some* of it has just gone too far...

Just my 2 1/2 cents worth.

Posted by: C at May 17, 2002 12:01 PM

I hate to be a cynic, but what's stopping someone from planting a pipe bomb (or worse) in a geocache location, just for s's and giggles?\

I know it's a horrible way to view the world, but these days....

I'm just too nervouse about the whole thing

Thoughts, Wil?

Posted by: Buntz at May 17, 2002 12:07 PM

Scarily enough, I hear you on the Bob Saget thing. The first time I saw him was on an HBO Young Comedians Special that Rodney Dangerfield hosted. This was like early-mid 80's. He was raunchy and nasty and I thought he was hilarious. Then I saw he was hosting America's Funniest Home Videos and told all my friends "You should see this guy. He's pretty funny."

Boy, did I look stupid.

Then "Full House" came out. Boy, did I look even more stupid.

It's good to know that there's someone that can actually vindicate my original opinion of Bob Saget!

About the only journey I care to enjoy is the journey from my computer to the lavatory.

And yeah, the subtle irony of 'singled out' works on a few levels. It's ashame most bipedal mammals are too stupid to understand an electric can opener. Much less the witty charm of intelectuals like us.

Just say 'No' to reproduction.

Posted by: PJ at May 17, 2002 01:39 PM

Oh yeah, and I used to umpire youth fast pitch softball. And I have to tell you that there are parents out there who have no business repopulating this planet. I've had adults almost swing at me because their little girl didn't have the effin' arm strength to throw strikes for two hours.

And people wonder why I hate people.

I would have to agree with hops' call on EpII. I am seeing it a second time today, sweet mother of mercy but even though some of it was frikkin corny, it's frikkin STAR WARS.

Ahem.

I'll be trippin over this movie for some time.

In other news, there are Wesley dolls. They don't look much like Senor Wheaton, but mine was spared my dog's wrath when she found my dolls. Out of the ones I left on the couch, only Deanna and Wesley were spared.

Or maybe he wasn't there, and it was just Guinan and Dr. Crusher who got chewed.

In any case, my dog knew what was good for her. No messing with the burgandy-clothed Deanna Troi.

Posted by: KJB at May 17, 2002 01:52 PM

you know for some reason I really like wil wheaton.
I mean sure I grew up on star trek and wes was one of the reasons I watched the show. I have a vague memory of my mom telling me once "you like to watch wes cuz he is a kid and you can pretend you are him" of course I think I was 11 but none the less Wil Wheaton is prolly one of the favorite actors and i HATE all of hollywood. He is vapid or shallow or fake at all he is a NORMAL PERSON. He shows feelings and caring and isn't fake about it. Also he listens to punk rock which is badass and has pretty much the same political views that I do. Wil I live in vegas and next time you are here you better let me buy you a beer ya dirty old bastard.
Also how can I get into a horror movie? It has been a dream of mine to be one of those non-speaking guys that get killed off by the evil slasher guy in the first 5 mins of the film. Also wil you should do TROMA films I think they would suit you well.
Ok thats enough not enough sleep bable from me.
Take care all

I can't TELL you how much I giggled when you mentioned Scut Farkus. After reading "The Trade," I had wondered how familiar you were with Jean Shepherd. If you're talking about the "A Christmas Story" movie though, you've just GOT to get the guy's books. "In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash," "A Fistful of Fig Newtons," and "Wanda Hickey's Night of Golden Memories" are all fantastic. "The Ferrari in the Bedroom" is good but hard to find ...

Posted by: Janis Cortese at May 17, 2002 03:03 PM

Sounds like you got the point of geocacheing.

One more thought though..for many caches the destination really IS the point; and I don't mean the plastic box full of trinkets...

I found one mountain cache that once we calmed down after finding the trinketbox, someone looked around and noticed an amazing view of Wallowa Lake to one side (this is in Oregon) and an incredible view of a deep river canyon on the other. There was no trail to this spot and I never would have found it trying to use a map or verbal directions. It was a truly breathtaking 360 degree view.

I suggest that everyone listen to his spoken word. Especially THE BOXED LIFE and THINK TANK...

This is just one more piece of proof that Wil is super cool.

It's great that Danica McKeller is directing. I watched The Wonder Years and had a crush on Fred Savage (we're the same age). Dan Lauria is amazingly talented, and then there's our Head Monkey, Uncle Wil.
Jane White's an impressive, all-star cast-certainly a diverse one.
(hey, what's Wil doing there? :P )

Alley Mills and Danica McKeller in film, Dan in the other? Do I sense a theme? Where's Fred, Josh, Olivia and Jason? Weren't they invited?

Wil: Do you have any idea whether or not we'll be seeing either of these films in Toronto? It IS Colin's home town afterall. He really IS Canada's Sexiest Man Alive.
(hey, I shook his hand once and babbled some incoherent fan-speak to him. Does that mean that I'm two degrees from Wil?)

Last thing: That's a fantastic Henry Rollins quote. It rings true.

Have a great weekend, Monsieur Wheaton.

If you hate your parents or anyone, forgive them, for this is the only way to be free, else you will be the slave of having to prove someone you're better than them for the rest of your life and be consumed by it, rather than being free to do what you want and to be yourself and live in peace with yourself and the world.
A gazillion people have been breaking apart over this anti-attitude.
Who wants to be trapped in that all his life?

My thought for today.

Posted by: Patty at May 18, 2002 04:27 AM

Wil,
Would love to see both of those films, but how??? You are so right about competitive sports. My three year old daughter begged to take gymnastics, I agreed but am terrified of what might happen if she wants to stick with it. Very cool thought for the day. I often wonder why more people don't recognize the intelligence of Henry Rollins. I have quite a bit of his music and his spoken word stuff. On a more superficial note, the man isn't hard on the eyes either.

just wondering if you'll ever be able to say "my kids" or "my son" instead of "my step-kids"...

Posted by: chris at May 18, 2002 05:16 PM

Wil;
What do your 'step-kids' call you?

My oldest is 8, and my S.O. has lived with us since he was 2, so he calls my S.O. "Dad". He calls his biological father "Papa". If your step-kids are older, that might be tough, though.

As for Geocaching: Quite a few of them can be done (with a little homework or a lot of area knowledge) without a GPS. Topographical maps, or mapping software is relatively inexpensive and one could enter the coordinates into the software and use a map to get close to the cache. There are also "locationless" caches that can be done from anywhere, just about. The www.geocaching.com website has info on all of this.

Wal-Mart has a nice starter GPS, the Magellan 315 for right around $99. I prefer my Meridian. The mapping software has saved us from getting/being lost countless times. I won't leave home without it!

But, how "Underground" could the films be if they are recognised by an awards committee?

Today's TV flashback/Zack Ward sighting:
One of my local TV stations apparently airs the very short lived (1994) Canadian TV series Boogies Diner (http://us.imdb.com/Details?0108712) of which Zack Ward was a part. Did that show air in the US? Other cast members included Jim J. Bullock and James Marsden.

If Canadians are looking for it, Global TV's got it Sunday mornings (9:30am Eastern). It was a bad show, but good for a Sunday morning giggle.

Posted by: delphine at May 19, 2002 08:58 AM

Woah, that search was weird. Just a question: why look yourself up? I mean that would just be too strange.
I know what you mean about little league. Parents can be unbelievable sometimes. I've played music since I was four and I remember the parents of the other kids used to push them so hard it was terrible. I guess it works though, they ended up very good musicians.

Posted by: Lynne at May 19, 2002 09:32 AM

You are so right about the sportsmanship issue in youth leagues. I coached many years of LL baseball and Ice hockey as well as umpired and refereed both. My focus with the kids was having fun while learning the fundementals of the game(s). It is sad that so many focus solely on winning at all costs rather than extolling the simple pleasures of having fun and giving your best efforts. Best of luck with your kids.

As for the "why look yourself up" question; I've done it too. For me it's just curiosity to see what tidbits of my internet past have survived, and what (if anything) people can find on me.

*shrug* heck, I do searches on my name, nickname, email address (current and previously-owned) all the time just for shits and giggles anyway :D

Wil,

the birds must like the landlord, take care of them...

as for hateign ones parents.. not the best thing
to do.. dislike them is ok.. if you were raised
the wrongway.. learn from it and raise your kids
or try to raise your kids under a "better way"

it's what I did.

bye Wil.

Hmmm... I looked my last name- Van Sant- up on the Google thingy like Wil did, and something about "Psycho" came up. That's a bit scary! Here's another little tidbit that only I will find interesting- my cousin, who has a family genealogy (sp?) told me the other day that one of our ancestors was one of the people who bought Manhattan for $24! So who owes me back rent? LOL
Everyone have a great day, and speaking of Manhattan, if you have nothing to do tonight, come see my band the Wag at Kenny's Castaways on Bleecker Street at 9 tonight. Seriously, if you do show up, introduce yourself to me! :)
Love, Alicia

Hey All,
Thanks for the Google idea! I looked myself up as well, and not only found my Homepage, but also some of my ansillary pages :) I found the same listings at Yahoo too (well a few less, but almost as many). Obviously, I never registered my sites w/ either search engine? My pages even come up under both my main nicknames. Thanks for the idea Wil :)

I guess I'll have to take your word on Bob Saget, Wil. My perception of him IS based upon his TV shows (Full House and America's Funniest Home Videos - and I won't even name that heinous WB show). I've always thought he was extremely unfunny and bland. His delivery on AFHV always strikes me as awkward and contrived. However, senior citizens love him.

Personally, the only funny thing I've ever seen Bob Saget do was in "Half-Baked". I'll remember to see him if he's ever in Chicago, and I truly hope he's as funny as you say, so I can gain a new perspective. Thanks Uncle Willy! YOU ROCK!

Speaking of internet searches, there's a website I recieved a link to today that has a gallery of photoshopped collector's plates. While I was scrolling through the 22 or so pages, I found on page 20, a photoshopped Commemorative Plate of Wil as Wesley Crusher. Looked well done, considering the perversity of a lot of the other plates there. I think it's the third one down.

Congrats on the films, and I like the sentiments about the family time. But I'm completely confused as to why there are more fuzzy dog pics in the Google Image search than pics of Wil! I was guessing all the TNGers and FARKers would have generated a higher hit rate than that!

Great site, Wil. Keep up the good -- and honest -- work.

I have been here before a long while back, but it's been a while. I rediscovered your blog while searching for something else I can't even remember now. I just wanted to say I'm really sorry about Felix, it's really tough to let a beloved pet go, and it's even harder when you have to make the decision to help them along. I've been there often enough to know. Taking in strays, rescues, and having them dropped in my yard for years means that my family has always had way more furry or scaley members than human members, and we've had to say goodbye a lot; old age, illness, ect... My sympathies for you and your family.
