« The World Is New | Main | » June 01, 2002J Keith van FerrisThe show last night ranks in my top 10 JKvS shows of all time. Keith and I were in perfect synch, the audience was totally on our side, and Save Ferris simply RAWKED! I can not believe that I got to sit on the stage while one of my favorite bands of ALL FREAKING TIME played three songs. There is ONE JKvS Show left this year, in two weeks...so make your plans now, kids. OH! I totally forgot: Tomorrow (Sunday) is Wesley Crusher day on TNN!! Okay, so I know that the little guy is totally gone and all...but there's something infinitely cool about TNN devoting a whole day to that silly little freak. Comments
Nothin like seeing your fave band live, is there? It sounds cool but I don't live in California.... Still from the looks of it the show is clever and witty (with a fair handle on pop culture) so maybe Fox will pick it up and then drop it shortly after the pilot episode. TV sucks almost as the state of the theatre in Baltimore MD. Posted by: Tommy Chewat at June 1, 2002 01:05 PMIt sounds cool but I don't live in California.... Posted by: Rhonda at June 1, 2002 01:30 PMSilly little freak or not, Wes grew into a great character :-) Save Ferris is totally awesome, dude. One of the best bands out there. I really wish I could see one of the JKvS shows, but unfotunately, I live in this hell hole called Houston, and I'm not driving a few thousand miles just to see that show. No, I'd rather stay inside with my tin foil hat so the aliens can't scramble my brain with their evil alien technology. Posted by: Pmacca01 at June 1, 2002 01:34 PMBut TNN is devoting the day to "Wesley Crusher." "That was Wesley Crusher, the doctor's son. I'm Cadet Crusher, the bad ass. Wesley was a dork. Cadet Crusher was cool." See, even on TNN the little badass can't get his due. He gets lumped in with the dork by his own portrayer as his portrayer was lumped in with him by stupid fans, so long ago... Ooooh, the heartbreak. Posted by: Internal Audience at June 1, 2002 01:53 PMI would agree. Last night's JKvS show did, in fact, RAWWWK! Save Ferris was a blast. What did you have to do to get the Wesley day on TNN? :o *Watches as Wil attempts to tear up the contract he signed for ownership of his soul* Now that its totally mucked up you can laugh at my complete humility! :P NOT TO MENTION all the sarah-ness. and fun of me passing out in the halls while waiting for the girls with the stand by me shirt to be gone. ack, I need to go back to sleep. Delphine. Stood closer than this to Lowest of the Low, they played at my university frosh week (sort of many moons ago). I wasn't a big fan (sorry!) and stood around for a few songs and then left. Sure, Wesley was just the token kid, but he did get cooler. To be honest with you Wil, I'd kinda like to see an older, slicker Wesley Crusher---maybe he splits from Star Fleet and turns into a bounty hunter, or totally rebels and starts a galactic bike gang! :) Posted by: jeffro at June 1, 2002 08:35 PMI am so STOKED! Man, Wil you're the whole reason I started watching Star Trek too. I was very jealous of Ashley Judd during that infamous on-screen (and maybe offscreen?) kiss. I, like many of your female fans, had a crush on you as a teenager too. Never underestimate the power of a nice fitting uniform. Posted by: Vanessa at June 1, 2002 11:00 PM(Hey, other Vanessa! Haven't talked in a while!) Anyway, Wil, was talking to a friend of mine tonight (who's a friend of Keith's) who was at the show last night. She said it was awesome and that you kicked ass. Hmmm... wonder if I could manage to make it down to LA in two weeks... Posted by: Vanessa (the other one) at June 1, 2002 11:25 PMI'll say it again Wil, Lighten up on poor Wesley, Wil. Leonard Nimoy wrote a book some two decades ago titled "I am not Spock". I didn't buy it. Leonard wrote a book a few years ago titled "I am Spock" which I did buy and read. Pretty good reading. Fascinating how we become seasoned upon our own reflection of life all in inexorable time. Some years later (TNG and Wes) and I'd wager some bright kid is modeling their life after Roddenberrry's character, Wesley Crusher, still. Lars Posted by: Lars at June 2, 2002 12:02 AMman, I feel like such a jerk now, sorry Amanda. I really didn't mean it like that. I just meant I was super tired and waiting for everyone to leave. Posted by: sarah at June 2, 2002 12:05 AMAlas, the Yankees will be on at our house today. But, all is not lost, all those episodes are on tape. (Yes, I taped almost every episode of ST:TNG, only missed a couple. Can't believe I've just admitted that...) I'll be with Young Mr. Crusher in spirit. I just loved Wesley, wanted to take him home and mother him. (But, not in a sick, perverse way...) Hey, did you see Ashley Judd is on the cover of TV Guide? Wish I could see a JKvS show, but he'll have to bring it to Rochester, NY!! Posted by: ambeart at June 2, 2002 06:52 AMAnd there in is a title for YOUR BOOK: "I AM/I AM NOT WESLEY". Posted by: hops at June 2, 2002 12:01 PMHey Kiddo, thanks for informing us of the Wesley marathon. Man some of those episodes kick. :) Hah, I'm watching this right now. Old Star Trek TNG are scary. I'm watching one where all the children get stolen. I presume they give back that crusher kid after getting annoyed by him :) Don't worry Wil, we dislike the character, not you ;) Posted by: Alex at June 2, 2002 12:25 PMthe other day the episode with the alien cloud that turned into an energy bolt and then took over the crew one by one was on. You and Gates McFadden had this great scene where she comes in as Wesley is studying warp theory and she asks about it and I thought you did an amazing job of getting that 'wow, my mom is asking about my hobby' smile. I smiled, too, and out loud I said "Hi, Wil." Just wanted to share that. Posted by: jim at June 2, 2002 12:50 PMcalling Wesley a silly little freak doesn't seem quite appropriate when, only a few days back, you were being all lovey-dovey and sentimental with the guy. Posted by: heidi at June 2, 2002 02:56 PMDude, but those sweaters suck. I give you retroactive pity for having to wear such ridiculous pieces of ladies clothing. And some chick just left a message on the TNN machine saying Wesley Crusher was hot. As Peter David said in "A Rock and a Hard Place": Commander Stone: The bridge of a starship is no place for a kid, and I'm sorry, Mr. Crusher, but that's how I feel. You're an 'acting ensign', whatever the hell that is. I don't know. Does anybody here know? Posted by: KJB at June 2, 2002 03:02 PMI agree with Heidi. Wes was and is cool. What do my eyes behold but hour upon hour of my Sweet Uncle Willy at the helm of a marathon featuring the contiuing missions of one Wesley Crusher. I used to hate him, now I've grown up and he's actually pretty cool. Nowadays I have better things to do than hate Wesley. For instance contemplate this: Ashley Judd or that shape shifting chick? First ST:TNG I've seen since first checking out WWDN. I can happily say I'm now a fan of all that is Wil! Posted by: Jeice Guyver at June 2, 2002 03:31 PMI wonder if Wil at least gets residuals.... Posted by: Da Schmiz at June 2, 2002 05:20 PMThe one thing that would make this Wesley Crusher Marathon complete would be Spudnuts calling the TNN hotline and getting a shoutout televised. As I caught the second half of a Star Trek:TNG I thought, Óh cool, it's got Wesley in it'. Then I watched teh nesxt one and I thought wow, really cool, another one with Wesley. Then they played a phone call from some dad whose daughter is mad about Wesley, and I thought, 'Hey, I gotta go let people know!' But it seems you already do!! Cool. Posted by: fenaray at June 2, 2002 07:09 PMI've been watching Wesley Crusher day (in between housekeeping) and I was thinking, they like him. They really, really like him. :) It is really cool to see your favorite band live, something I haven't done since I was 18. Posted by: tskll at June 2, 2002 07:34 PMYou know, I always worshipped Wesley, when I was younger. First, Wes amazed the heck out of me from the start, because he was so smart. Something I connected with, found cute. Second, he's cute as hell, and that he gets from Wil, of course! And three, I always empathized with Wesley. Because he was smart, of course... but also because he wasn't taken seriously at first. I had a time in my life, where that happened to me. Related to that issue, is the fact that I never could pick a guy who was... reasonably attainable. Something I notice, Wes had in common when he pursued girls. A shapeshifter who was chosen to live on some planet and couldn't leave... Robin Lefler, who was... long-distance, to put it mildly. And I bet getting mixed up with Locarno's cover-up, left him with a lot of people who didn't get too close to him afterward. Come to think of it, that could be what disillusioned him to Starfleet. Being unofficially shunned, being held back a year probably gave him a reputation that turned people off to him. And I know what that's like... everyone makes mistakes. And something I've learned from my OWN life is, people can't be judged on the past. The past has already happened, and can't be changed. What matters is, the here and now. What you DO with your life, moment by moment. You make mistakes? LEARN from them. Far as I'm concerned, if I were there, if Wes was real instead of a character on a sci-fi show, I would have sat down next to him, introduced myself, and simply said that if he needed a friend, he'd have one. The only people who SHOULD be judged by past actions, are those who never learn from them, who INTENTIONALLY would seek out to repeat them. And anyone with eyes in their head, would easily see that Wes Crusher just wasn't one of those people who ignored a life lesson. I wonder. Could Wesley's hard-shelled attitude by the end of Wil's run on Star Trek, have anything to do with reacting to expectations that people might have had, after that accident that killed Josh Albert? Something to think about. Posted by: Cartoon Beagle at June 2, 2002 07:46 PMwhile watching Star Trek TNG on "the new TNN" (Wesley Crusher Day) after the culvert star burst episode "The First Duty" a woman viewer/fan, who sounded to be about 50 years of age, called in from Jackson, TN and said "I'd just like to say Wesley Crusher is one hot teenager." Posted by: kenny at June 2, 2002 08:10 PMMr. Wheaton, I really hope for your sake when you were younger on Star Trek you didn't behave like your character does in the series. I kept thinking "what's up with all the Wesley Crusher". lol And Save Ferris Rocks! I discovered them about 3 years ago when they guest starred on a TV show I loved and ever since I've been a big fan. So you suck for getting to see them. Posted by: Lissa at June 2, 2002 09:28 PM...and kissing Ashley Judd couldn't have been half bad. :) Posted by: Bob at June 2, 2002 10:21 PMI plopped down on my couch today, and aside from the occasional commercial break when I'd run to get a can of pop or a snack, I'd planned to watch the entire marathon from start to finish, unfortunately, there was a family emergency, and I missed All of The First Duty and 15 minutes of the one before it, returning from the hospital just in time for the opening credits on Wesley's farewell episode. I was sooooo bummed! The main reason I wanted to watch this marathon, (aside from the fact that it's an entire day of ST:TNG) was The First Duty. It's about #3 in my list of all time favorite episodes. Luckily, I have the entire series on Columbia House Collector's Edition VHS tapes, but I really wanted to see it in Digital Satelite! :( Wil, how much would it cost me to have you and Robbie Mcneil fly to Canada and act out a live performance of the episode right here in my living room? SERIOUSLY. Name your price. Posted by: Shawn at June 2, 2002 11:19 PMAhh! I love Save Ferris also. I can't remember where I first heard them.. :/ and I have not yet seen them live! Posted by: jamiee at June 2, 2002 11:47 PMWil - I was one of the few who always liked the Wesley character, and I've been a Star Trek fan since the time my parents let me stay up and watch the ST:TNG pilot on the color TV (I was about 6 at the time). TNG is still my favorite Trek (although Enterprise and the good seasons of DS9 are pretty close), and I've seen almost every episode at least once. I just wanted to say, though, that after watching The Game, The First Duty, and Journey's End back-to-back, I realized something that I hadn't really caught on to before: you are a superb actor. I'll admit, before I found this site (thank you, slashdot!) I always thought of you as Wesley, and I didn't give much thought to you as Wil, the actor. Especially by comparison with Hayden Christensen, I was really impressed... you had the awkward teenage romance thing down in The Game, but you didn't come across flat like Anakin in AotC. Likewise, "I am sick and tired of following rules and regulations" came across much more nicely than "He's holding me back!" Anyways, to sum up, I think the site is cool, and I think you as a person are cool, but I just really came to the conclusion tonight that you as an actor are good. Either that, or you had a lot more in common with the Wesley character than I thought. Hmmm... maybe the truth is somewhere in between. Posted by: Da Schmiz at June 3, 2002 12:22 AMWHAT! I MISSED WESLEY CRUSHER DAY ON TNN! Wil, what you forget is something better... every day is WIL WHEATON DAY here on wilwheaton.net sorry I missed your day.. was getting much needed whats up with Picard these days??? I still think it would have been a great raitings bye! Posted by: wade at June 3, 2002 01:28 AMI turned on TNN last night to chill out a bit before bed, and what to my wondering eyes should appear but good ol' Wesley Crusher! I thought to myself, "Wouldn't it be nice to have a whole day of Wesley episodes?" not knowing that the entire day had been just that... Oh, well. I'm just glad I'm buying the entire series box set by box set... The episode that I managed to see last night was the one where Wesley has to get the water for Capt. Picard, who's dying. Wil, I must say, you did some fine acting. I particularly liked the scene where Wesley tells the Captain that everything he does, he does to make the captain proud. On the part where you say, "I never told you this- I never told anybody this!" it sounded to me like the second half of that sentence was ad-libbed. I really dug it! Anyway, I just thought it was great acting. As far as the Traveller goes- I guess they couldn't follow up on that storyline 'cuz it wouldn't have taken place on the Enterprise- but I sure would like to see a movie made out of it! :) Wil, I really think you're a great actor. I would love to meet you in person, but alas, I live in NJ. Hopefully you'll make it to a convention out here someday soon... I guess that's it for now. I didn't know beforehand about the Wesley Day on TNN, but was fortunate enough to catch it. I was flipping to TNN during breaks in the Kings-Lakers game (my heart is breaking still) and happened to catch on that all the episodes featured Wesley in a prominent role. I ended up staying up till midnight just to catch them all. It was the only thing that brightened my day after the Kings lost... And Save Ferris rawks! Posted by: Susie-Q at June 3, 2002 08:02 AMWil - did "The New" TNN want to interview you? Would have been interesting to have some of your thoughts on the episodes shown, especially getting to work with Ashley Judd and one on one scenes with Patrick Stewart and Gates McFadden. I hate that bottom line cutting into the picture on THE NEW TNN. Posted by: David J at June 3, 2002 08:04 AMWesley Crusher day on TNN just rawked! Wish they had some interview footage with Wil Wheaton in place of some of the dorky commercials they had running for the network. It was nice to see that being a geek could be a cool thing. :) Posted by: pavlova27 at June 3, 2002 08:42 AMMmmm, Wesleyriffic. They showed my very favorite episode--"Remember Me." Love that one. Gates McFadden rocks the house. Posted by: Interplanet Janet at June 3, 2002 09:15 AMWesley day was great! I don't understand why everyone hated him. The show ended when I was in 4th grade, so I never watched it, but I imagine if I had, I would have liked him. Maybe I liked him because I'm a Wil fan, but no matter, it was a lovely day. Posted by: Megan at June 3, 2002 09:29 AMWas channel-surfing last night, and what a pleasant surprise to run into TNG reruns! I started watching, and thought, "Hey, great! A good Wesley episode!" Then, another one. Then, another one ... then I realized, "Hey, they're playing a solid block of Wesley eps! Excellent!" I just wish I had known about it before so I could have caught more than the ones that I did get. (Although, I admit the warp-bubble episode freaks me to the point where I can't watch it.) A very pleasant surprise yesterday! Hopefully, they'll get a nice reaction from it, and someone somewhere with the power to make casting and marketing decisions will realize that you're a selling point for the show, as indeed you are. Not to mention the fact that in hindsight ... well, you *were* a cutie, weren't you? :-) Still are, I have no doubt. Posted by: Janis Cortese at June 3, 2002 10:39 AMJeez, Wil. Posted by: Kevin at June 3, 2002 11:22 AMBeing the stuck-in-my-teenybopper-years 21-year-old that I am, I actually taped the entire marathon yesterday.... But I just graduated from college two weeks ago, so I have the right to not do anything constructive for a while! Don't I...? Posted by: ShrednFred at June 3, 2002 01:44 PMI saw the very last episode last night, where Wesley goes off with the Traveler. It was an interesting show. After coming here and reading your comments about your desire to leave Star Trek I saw this episode in a whole new light. I can only say that is Wesley has any power over time and space perhaps we the audience will see him again in the Star Trek Universe. I hope so, anyway. Posted by: Linnhe at June 3, 2002 02:28 PMI really hope they didn't delete that scene in the Nemesis that we first see Wesley Crusher for nearly 8 years! I'll be upset to find both Wil's & Ashley's parts cut! I hope there is some heartwrenching motherly scenes when Dr. Crusher & Wesley reunite. I hope there is some emotional grasp to this! Posted by: 88survivor at June 3, 2002 03:43 PMblah blah liberal crap yada yada communist website blah blah Posted by: elaine benes at June 3, 2002 05:59 PMHey Wil, Michael Shanks left Stargate-SG1...hint, hint....I think you'd be an awesome replacement !! Posted by: Vikki at June 3, 2002 06:16 PMHumm... You know, I had TNN on for part of the day and was listening to STNG in the background. I didn't realize it was Wesley Crusher weekend! I would have recorded it ALL out of principle. The ONLY reason I was a 10 year old girl watching STNG EVERY week was because of Wil Wheaton. :) Being "mommy" now doesn't allow much time for me to reminisce about those good old care-free days when my walls (and ceiling) were plastered with pin-ups of all the hotties at the time. Finding fark.com through some buddies, then seeing this has been really cool. I have to say, Wil, that even though Wesley rocked, Stand By Me is the piece I'll always rememeber most. Beautifully done. It will forever be a classic. Posted by: Jessica at June 3, 2002 07:40 PMI remember first entering the Star Trek club on that now monolithic online giant/media conglomerate and being surprised by all the Wesley haters. Mostly all of them middle-aged adults who seemed ticked that (if in the same situation as the Enterprise adults) they'd be just as dumbfounded at Wesley's intelligence and just a wee bit pissed that they hadn't connected the dots before the little showoff had. I thought it rather fitting that they ended up giving Wes powers above and beyond the mere humans that outranked him on the Enterprise. Wes haters are probably gearing up as I hear that Wesley Returns in Star Trek X: Nemesis can you tell us about it Wil??? Or just tell me! I'll call ya, I've got the number. Posted by: James at June 3, 2002 08:27 PMS'ok maybe I won't call. It's a long distance dial and as much as it would be cool to talk to *THE* Wil Wheaton, it'd suck if such invasion of privacy just right pissed him off. Such being the case here's my number instead you can call me anytime ###-###-#### Hope to hear from you soon! (_Number removed to protect the chronically stupid_) Posted by: James at June 3, 2002 08:38 PM Once upon a time, in a land far away, there was a young girl who loved a tv character so much that she was almost convinced that they would get married and have little Crusher babies and live happily ever after on the Enterprise. WOW!! Wesley Crusher day on TNN!!!!! It's really cool....but not to me.. IcanT see that. ...and I really sad, that I cant't see a JKvs show, I'm too far from there!!:((((((((((((((((( Posted by: Agi at June 4, 2002 06:30 AMThere are a hell of a lot of comments just from hanging a screen door.
