That THAT, Comic Book Guy!

eBay is auctioning tons of really cool TNG things. They have original scripts, some props, and some stuff from some other shows.

Included in this huge lot of stuff is a series of memos written by Bob Justman, one of the main creative producers and a very cool guy, to Gene Roddenberry. In the memos, Bob gives notes on the various scripts and story ideas.

This memo is about the episode "Code of Honor":

"Next problem. No Wes. We have Will Wheaton on a 13 out of 13 deal -- just like our other regulars. We pay him whether we photograph him or not. If we don't use him, all his teenybopper fans are going to be disappointed and we won't be taking advantage of one of our new show's greatest assets. I'm told we're not using him because our writers don’t' know how to write for him. I find that hard to believe. They're writers, aren't they? I know damn well that *you* can write him -- so why don't you show them how? Put him in a scene. I know you can do it. Another problem solved." "Listen to what Rick Berman has to say about this script -- and everything else, for that matter. He's smart and has very good ideas. He's already a great asset to you and 'Star Trek'. I'm sure that, as time zooms by, he'll become even more valuable."

I've looked over most of this stuff, and it's just incredible the amount of work these people put into making this series work.

While I'm sure some lucky (and wealthy) collectors will gleefully add this stuff to their private collections, I sure hope that these memos and notes are copied somewhere, and eventually collected into a book. I'd like to read it.

"And Bob said, 'Let there be Wil'..."

Posted by: i_ate_the_sandbox at June 8, 2002 11:04 AM

Not all your fans were teenyboppers! Sheesh!

Posted by: jerhanner at June 8, 2002 11:09 AM

Wil had teenybopper fans? I wonder what happened to them.

Posted by: Mark at June 8, 2002 11:10 AM

Wil-

Was there ever any doubt? As one of those "teenyboppers" Bob is referring to, I say "here here."

It's kind of funny to hear that, cuz they DID seem to have some troubles writing for you at the very beginning.

*bad Farpoint flashback*

I also find the comments about Rick B amusing. To think, Bob pretty much forshadowed the future of the Trek Legacy in that one sentance.

Hella cool!

Go put that "Ensign Crusher-mint-in-box" money to good use! Get bidding and good luck!

Posted by: Steve at June 8, 2002 11:14 AM

No jerhanner they weren't....

but if you think about it, TNG was intended to bring back the old die hard fans as well as bring in a newer younger group of viewers, and really that is what Wil's character was originally designed to do...hook those of us who were teens who may or may not have grown up as trek fans to begin with...he was an access point for a whole different demographic.

So in a way...Wesley Crusher is in part responsible for the continuation of later expansions of Trek, DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise.

Posted by: Cherish at June 8, 2002 11:14 AM

Interesting Memo, I would definately bid on that if I were you! (It's a great ego booster as well) ;)

Posted by: NephraTari at June 8, 2002 11:16 AM

That would be cool if some one did make it in to a book. Damn right there was a problem. No Wil.
Not good. :)

Posted by: angry penguin at June 8, 2002 11:34 AM

Maybe we should do a "tip jar" thing so we could all contribute and buy it for our Sweet Uncle Willie.

Eh?

Posted by: Cure Fan at June 8, 2002 11:41 AM

Good Gawd...

I just saw you again in Flubber

I keep forgetting you're in that movie...

Anyway, to make a point, Chris Tolkein made a lot of money selling his fathers notes for Lord of the Rings, so there should be a market for Star Trek TNG notes...

Posted by: Scatcat at June 8, 2002 11:49 AM

Hehehe... that's a great memo. Teenybopper fans (was me), but I would have watched the show whether Wes was in it or not... I always had a thing for machines that acted like men.

Posted by: chica at June 8, 2002 12:12 PM

Damn, where can I get one of these deals with get paid whether I work or not? I wonder if I can get my boss to go for it?

Posted by: Ainu at June 8, 2002 12:17 PM

God I long for the days of TNG. Enterprise blows goats. I don't even bother watching it. Fucking ANDROMEDA is better than it. Scott Bakula is the most generic white male I have ever seen in my entire life.

Posted by: tikman at June 8, 2002 12:36 PM

Heh, I was starting my first year of college when TNG came on the air, far too old to think of myself as a "teenybopper" (whether I was one or not), but I was thrilled to see that they had not only put a young character on the new Star Trek, but that they had chosen someone I considered to be a "real actor" and not just one of those guys out of Tiger Beat who were really pretty but you honestly couldn't remember what they were famous for. You WERE one of the show's greatest assets. I'm sorry they didn't take better advantage of that, especially in the beginning.

Posted by: dorrie6 at June 8, 2002 12:42 PM

Wow, that memo was really neat to read! As uncle Willie said, "I'd like to read it[a compilation of the memos]"

That would be hella cool

Damn you Wil Wheaton, you're making me use "hella"!

hehe

Posted by: Lithium at June 8, 2002 12:47 PM

Good God, they're selling EVERYTHING! I mean, Kirk's fucking Captain's chair? Why can't I be like Samantha/Tabitha/Endora and wiggle my nose and make it all MINE????

Posted by: hippiewitch at June 8, 2002 12:56 PM

Since when have we been teenyboppers?! I hate that word. I am a teenager yes, and I like good looking guys in teenager aimed movies. But that does NOT make me a teenybopper! I have never been a teenybopper and I will never be one either!
Oh yeah...cool entry wil.

Posted by: Sally at June 8, 2002 01:04 PM

Yes, and next week comes the dutch auction with all those mind control devices from The Game.
Forget the bunny ears!!

Posted by: Internal Audience at June 8, 2002 01:38 PM

Hah. That memo rules.

That's how I got to watching. May dad always watched Star Trek, so then TNG started so he checked that out and it because a regular in his "schedule". Then I saw the cutie on there, when my hormones were raging early, and I became hooked. I NEVER liked Star Trek. UHG. I got to liking TNG storylines and cast, though, very much. I never watched DS9. It didn't grab me like TNG. I DID watch Voyager. I'm not sure why. I think Voyager reminded me a lot of TNG because it took place mostly on the ship PLUS there was a female captain. WOO!

uh... my point was... you have a point. ;)

Jess

Posted by: yoyofool at June 8, 2002 02:03 PM

Hey Wil,
Been thinking deep stuff latley, haven't you?
I wished they kept you in TNG longer... whenever I watched it in reruns, I always listen to the stardate, and if the second number is not 1 or 2 or 3 I turn it off. And more often then not, it isn't (understand?)
But i think it was your choice to leave, because they treated you badly, so you were definatly right ,there.By the way, what's the deal with Star Trek: X ?

Bob Justman wins my love just because he says, "I know damn well..."

I'm easily amused.

Posted by: KJB at June 8, 2002 02:38 PM

Nice memo.. it's nice to know that you were wanted at some point on ST:TNG although it sucks that they didn't use you more. Geez you would think that these writers would know how to write any type of character. What are they getting paid the big bucks for?

It would be a hell of a job trying to track down all the different memos out there and get a book out of that. Who knows? It just may happen one day.

What's up with "hella"? Must be a California thing. No Doubt's latest song is "Hella Good". Never heard the phrase before No Doubt's song. I guess you learn something new everyday.

Posted by: pavlova27 at June 8, 2002 03:08 PM

Was that before of after 'Skin of Evil'. Yep, I'm geek enough to know epi names, but not always what season. I was sooo glad when they killed Yar, but my ass coulda wrote a better epi than 'Skin'. Wil, why not write books about your character like Shimerman, Philips, Picardo & Andy Robinson have done??? At least it could give ya some scratch, with the added bonus of givin your fans some more Wesley! If those other actors can do it, why couldn't you?!

Posted by: Nightfly at June 8, 2002 03:59 PM

"Hella" is a California phrase. As I recall, NorCal people used to get made fun of by others for it, although that is just through my own experience. It's entirely possible it's migrated.

Etiology is fun!

Posted by: KJB at June 8, 2002 04:27 PM

I'm kinda curious tho, Wil. WFS's ST6 uniform is going for like $15,000, Patty-Pat Stewart's tunic is valued at $10+ thousand, but where is that shitty grey-with "rainbow brite" striped thing that you wore during the first season? I'll bet that'd go for $40... maybe $50 bucks without a problem.

*thinks Wil may have been FORCED to leave for walking off with props and costumes*

So, the truth comes out after all these years, huh?

And what about Lefler's panties?

WIL!!!!!

Posted by: Steve at June 8, 2002 04:28 PM

Hey as a teenybopper fan of Wil's I an proud to say I still love the man- he's so talented!!!!

Posted by: Andie-Gypsy_girl at June 8, 2002 05:22 PM

"Hella" was also a word Eric Cartman used many times during a certain episode of South Park...um, Scary Fish was the name I believe. "You guys are hella stupid." "This is hella scary." "I'm hella hungry." etc.

Posted by: hippiewitch at June 8, 2002 05:32 PM

Believe me...when you're almost 30, you'd be really really happy if someone would stop and describe you as a "teeny-bobber".

Who up there was happy Yar got killed? GRRRRRRR...........

He's not in nemesis cuz the teeny bopperness has left the Wil. He is now a married old man who is selling all memorability of his childhood to show the fact that he's all grows up.

WHOA I just noticed on that site.. Ashley Judd appearing as LEfler!@!

dude if that's true I'm bringing some KY and tissue with me.

Posted by: hops at June 8, 2002 11:13 PM

It shouldn't matter if he's all grown up. He played a character. Characters should change and grow too. Unless you're the Simpsons... hehheh.

They could have done SO much with Wesley. I still don't "get it". Whatever.

Jess

Posted by: yoyofool at June 9, 2002 05:03 AM

Wil-
I know that you are *over* being Wes, and that's totally cool, but you shouldn't be so down on yourself and your character. It was just a character, not you, per se. And Wes did have his endearing moments. I always thought you were supercute... Besides, if any of us had had a camera crew following us around for our early teenage years, none of us would have come off too well either. D'oh! I did have my dad following me around with his camcorder. Those are NOT the videos I want leaked on to the internet. *shudder*

Posted by: the dominator at June 9, 2002 06:58 AM

I think Wil is one of the luckier celebrities, frankly. Certainly one of the few that actually seems happy and has "had it all". He had a spotlight for awhile, even if it isn't what he really wants to be remembered for. He got to act. He got further than community theatre and local commercials. He made money on a hit show doing something he loved. He got to experience "hollywood" life and work with many interesting people.

Now, he has a family life, a great relationship with his wife, something that is SO precious that many super famous people can't fully enjoy. Plus, how many celebrities do you see maintaining their own website and interacting with fans and "real" people? How many celebrities do you see having a real life? My respect for Wil tripled when I saw this site. Quadrupled. Whatever.

This, THIS, is exactly what I wanted for my life when I was younger. I am truly envious.

Jess

Posted by: yoyofool at June 9, 2002 07:51 AM

Hopefully Wil will verify one way or another what happened to Wesley's role in the upcoming movie....He was alleged to have been Lefler's hubby, and Lefler is still listed....Maybe they found someone else for her to be married to they thought might attract more female viewers....maybe (gasp) they've found someone else to play Wesley.

Have you done anything recently to really piss them off, Wil?

Posted by: John at June 9, 2002 08:27 AM

I don't think it's fair to Bob that that the auctions are being dumped on the market all at once. The market is now saturated, whereas if they dribbled it out over a longer period of time they would get a lot more for it. Oh well.

I hope Bob is OK... why is he selling all of his stuff all of a sudden? Wil, if you liked him, maybe you should try to find out...

Posted by: cosmiquemuffin at June 9, 2002 08:37 AM

If you check the official Star Trek Nemisis site you'll see that Wil is listed as Wes. Don't know why IMDB doesn't know.

Posted by: hops at June 9, 2002 10:34 AM

Hey Wil,

That was a great memo. It's nice to see some people actually give credit where it is due. I think Wes had a broader appeal than with just one age group. I certainly was no teenybopper when I began watching TNG, I used to watch with my little daughter back then. She was a big fan. Óf course, her favorite character was Data. I used to watch the original Star Trek with my parents when I was small. It's kinda cool really. Well, have a great Sunday!

Posted by: fenaray at June 9, 2002 10:50 AM

Speaking of Hella,

I just watched that episode of South Park the other day. You'll never guess who introduced me to South Park. Even thought she lives in Florida and I live in Canada, my mother introduced me to South Park. Life is weird.

Anyways, it was a cool memo. I never knew that producers even CARED about a star's "teenybopper" fans. That's kidna cool. Kinda... maybe...

Wish I had some money to bid, but this poor girl's broke!!!

Posted by: S(hannon) at June 9, 2002 12:46 PM

This explains a lot. The original Wes-Haters must have been the writers, after they were ordered to write what they didn't "feel". I will admit to you, Wesley wasn't my favorite character, but now I am definately a Wil fan. Leave Crusher behind, and come into your own, Wheaton, you're great. Oh, and put up some more of your recent photos, Wil! I feel creepy looking at the kid pics!

"Wil had teenybopper fans? I wonder what happened to them"

They grew older and went to college and got jobs.

Well... some of them did, I'm sure... (;

Posted by: kendoka at June 9, 2002 05:02 PM

Wil, we have a problem. Somehow I have recieved several hits from web searches that involve, "Nude Wil Wheaton", "Naked Wil Wheaton", and other such queries. I wonder if you could make them stop. I'm having insidious nightmares. I mean, not that you are ugly, but dude. You're a dude.

Posted by: Marc at June 9, 2002 08:30 PM

Wil also had some kick-ass jeans, back in the day.

Posted by: Roughy at June 9, 2002 09:52 PM

I have to say that I'm the same age as Wil, and have been a fan ever since my mother took me to see Stand by Me. Teeny Bopper was never a word that could be associated with me...I was your typical misunderstood Goth who hated everyone. Everyone but Wil Wheaton. He was my guilty pleasure. I started watching TNG after Wil left, only because my college roommate was a devout Trekkie. I didn't even know Wil was on it until it went into reruns. You're right, Wil about Wesley being a serious dork, but you did a fantastic job with a shitty role. Much kudos to you. I'm a major indy lover and have seen a couple of yours. You are PHENOMENAL man. Keep it up, and I'll keep watching.

Posted by: Meshell at June 9, 2002 10:36 PM

Nice post. And being older than Wil, I was certainly not a teenybopper! I'm sure there are tons of memos out there and a book of them would sell no problem. There must have been a memo something like - I know damn well that outfit on Wil sucks. Who the hell dressed him in pleated velour curtain material, and that color? For Christ's sake talk to the wardrobe people and make them change it. And kick the writers. Don't they know how to write, Wes? Maybe have them bring in a love interest for Wes, some waxy-assed bombshell, that ought to boost the ratings. - or not.

And the writers must have had problems because they couldn't write Tasha either. No wonder she wanted out as well. To big a cast? Not enough air time to fully utilize all actors? Whatever, it was and is still the best Star Trek series, with TOS a close second.

Posted by: Nyarl at June 10, 2002 05:15 AM

I'm seriously going to have to watch TNG again (its been a little while) now because I don't remember wes's costume other than thinking he looked awesome in it, particularly his ass. Hehheh. Hormones, ya know.

:D

Posted by: yoyofool at June 10, 2002 06:00 AM

Those "teenyboppers" --- if we think 13-17 in 1988 -- are now nearly-30s and thirthysomethings.

Some of them are soccer moms, some are MonkeyBoxers (and some are both). ;)

I know the price would go sky high, but it would be neat if Wes got Bob Justman's Wes Memo.

Posted by: LittleGuy at June 10, 2002 06:28 AM

*groans* "teenyboppers" *Shivers* I almost feel insulted by that word. I was 12 when the TNG series started and in high school senior year when the TNG was ended.:( So yeah the show was in my teenage years but never was it a show that was attractive to my age because they placed a youngster in it. Pluhease! I liked Wes but I was liking the show for its celebration of smart people. I wish hollywood would stop insulting young peoples intelligance. I can't believe that even the makers of Star Wars even lowered themselves to placing the infamious "Jar Jar" in the movie in ordder to attract a younger audiance. Pluh!

Posted by: Chelsey at June 10, 2002 02:00 PM

"Roxy"..it just means we/they turned into Wil's "posse"!

As far as the rest of my post I always felt that the writers did not utilize the "Wesley" character
to their best advantage. It kind of seemed that
they REALLY did not have a clue most of the time
how someone his age would act or think. Just my
opinion..

Hello Wil~

I like Star Trek. Always have, probably always will. I've watched all the original series episodes, all of TNG, a good bit of DS9, some Voyager, a little less Enterprise... Seen all the movies, good and bad. Even (*gulp*) been to a few conventions. And no, this wasn't meant to be a confessional; there's a point, I promise.

Of all the Star Trek franchises that have graced television over the years, the one show I will consistently watch over and over again is Next Genneration. It really was a fabulous show. It grabbed and held my attention more than any other, touched issues that were thought provoking and meant a lot to me at the time, and I find myself watching the reruns with almost the same excitement I did the first time I saw them, sometimes more depending on the episode.

Ok, so maybe I'm biased. But to me it was more than just a show. It was family dinner Sunday nights gathered around the TV, where we'd all watch it, glued to our little 15 inch tv, and then my dad and I would hash out possible upcoming plots together afterward. It was hearing the ooo's and aaahhh's of my little brother when there was a space battle. It was becoming more and more fascinated with the special effects that made me fall in love with computer animation and persue a degree in it. It was just...cool. And when I watch it again, those are some of the things I remember, not how badly written Wesley may have been, or how the script could've been better. I'd take a "bad" Next Gen rerun over any other "good" episode from any of the others, anyday, man...

Even the Wesley episodes.

Take care,
~Teri

Posted by: Teri at June 10, 2002 03:13 PM

new frontier series? dude i think u need to get out of the trek universe for a while.. they sell lives in everquest maybe you should look one up there? :)

Posted by: hops at June 10, 2002 03:14 PM

The memo speaks volumes about whole problem with what happened to you: they didn't know how to write (at least, know how to develop a character).

One of the first problems was that they stuck your character literally in the driver's seat. How are you supposed to develop any teenage angst that people can related to when you're given the ultimate job right away? They should have at least shown jealous Star Fleet grads tripping Wesley in the hallways or something. I think the later, frustrated, rebellious Wesley made much more sense as a character.

Speaking of driver's seat, I think your character should have at least gotten into a fender-bender with the family starship.

Posted by: synchronicity at June 10, 2002 03:17 PM

The books aren't canon...never have been. The writers for tv episodes and the movies have always been given free rein to depart from what was written in the books. Lots of contradictions between the two medium.

That said...Peter David was given what no other Star Trek novel author has been given...his own ship and characters to work with, along with a few secondary characters to connect his ship to what everyone's seen on tv...such as Lefler. With his own ship populated by his own characters...the predictable nature of most Trek novels was removed....the reader couldn't be sure that all the main characters would be alive and the same at the end of the novel....things could happen that couldn't happen in other Trek novels.

The New Fronteir series is quite good. Peter David is a very talented author. I highly recommend his novels for fans of the show. I still remember scenes from his novel Q-in-Law as if I saw them on tv. Imzadi was also quite memorable.

Wow man.

Anyways, just like ST, there was a boy genius, but he had a bad attitude....and...a dolphin.

Someone else thought it would be a good idea to make this hyper intelligent dolphin communicate through a computer....which had a strange kiddie voice.

Darwin...good!

Yeah. Kudos to wil and wes.

"Kirk's fucking Captain's chair?"

OK, you just conjured the worst possible mental image EVER. Thanks a bunch.

I'm with John -- I too remember scenes from "Q-in-Law" as if I'd seen them on TV. Peter David is about the only Trek author I bothered to save from my more fanatical TNG days.

"Comic Book Guy" -- I'm pretty sure he was based on an actual comic book guy here in town (after all, Matt Groening did grow up around these parts, from what I understand). Snicker.

"Teeny bopper"...sounds like they were in the wrong decade...no wonder they had trouble writing for Wil. He was too cool and they didn't know how to handle that. I was a teen with STNG was on but certainly wouldn't have called myself a "teeny bopper." Even though Wes could be annoying sometimes, I enjoyed Wil's talent greatly and wished they had written better material to suit that talent.

Posted by: Ness at June 11, 2002 01:00 PM

And there's a subplot-line involving Wesley in Q-in-Law that, imho, tops all other Wesley plotlines ever. I think Wil might agree he wished he could have had a chance to film it....

Lets just say someone is extremely pleased with the assistance Wesley gives him, and in return, offers him a gift.

Posted by: John at June 11, 2002 01:07 PM

I've been racking my brains for weeks now trying to put a name to a certain STTNG episode I had bouncing around my head. Turns out it wasn't an episode but the above mentioned book Q-in-Law. It was so brilliantly written I remember it as if I watched it on TV.

Peter David's a genius. If you havent read this book, get it now.

I would love StarTrek 11 to be based on it. And if Wil has read it, a million wild horses wouldn't keep him from playing Wesley THAT randy.

"The Threeway."

I feel oddly patriotic after listening to the audio gift given to us by Rob. The hell with Wil and his auctions, I bow to the notion of giving Spudnuts his due! American women, please give this man that which is his for the taking...

Spudnuts, I salute you! No, I HELLA salute you!

Hella.

Hella.

Hella.

God bless the USA! (And go, Lakers!)

Now, back to the Wil Wheaton Celebrity Fun Hour already in progress...

Posted by: Steve at June 11, 2002 08:48 PM

Hahaha, I was one of those teenyboppers...! I know y'all have heard this a million times, but Wesley is the reason I started watching TNG. I was channel surfing, went past whatever station TNG was on at the time, and thought, "Gosh, he's cute. What's this?"

As for the book of memos, Wil--I don't know about TNG memos, but Leonard Nimoy discusses a few original series memos in his book _I Am Spock_. There's one about all of the possible names for Vulcan characters...Spork, Spilk, Spook...it was great. *chuckle*

Well Will I saw at least 2 good episodes of you in STar Trek. There was the one with the traveler. (max Headroom?) and the one with the Nanites.

William Shatner said his tunic went for $40,000 and he is expecting his chair to go for something like $1 millllion dolllars. (dr evil) muah ha ha ha ha ha.

CHeck out my website Im uisng an LCARS format and I have seen at least 1 or 2 others LCARS format pages. Keep up the work on the site. Keep at it. If you can reengineer nanites you can do anything.
