« Sadtimes | Main | hoo-hah » December 10, 2002...and a little good newsBefore I get to the good news, I just wanted to thank everyone who sent me kindness yesterday. While not getting invited really felt like a slap in the face, it is certainly not the end of the world, by any means. Now I'll be seeing the movie for the first time with my friends, in a regular theatre, with a "real" audience, which will be cool. The good news: a few months back, Chris DiBona approached me, and asked me if I'd be interested in joining the Board of Advisors for a new game company he was forming. I said yes, and I've managed to be useful already, which is cool. Their first game is a MMORPG called Rekonstruction. Anyhow, the press release went out today, and I thought I'd pimp it. Comments
Wil, Great news! Good luck with the game stuff. Having owned a game company for 6 years now, I can tell you, it's not easy, but it is very rewarding. Bein around creative people kicks ass. You will enjoy it. Posted by: Travis Riggs at December 10, 2002 10:51 AMThat's great news.. both the new game and turning a sad experience into one that you'll remember fondly. =) can't wait for the PAX movie you did to come out. if no one has told you lately.. you RAWK. Posted by: mst3cate at December 10, 2002 10:53 AMVery cool, Wil. Congratulations on your new venture. :) And regarding the Bozos-That-Be in other areas of the galaxy: They are absorbed in their own delusions of self-importance and having seemingly let slip their very tenuous grasp on reality. That they continually dis you should be a sign that you are just a little too "real" for their comfort ... I take that as a GOOD sign ... *sigh* Posted by: Denise at December 10, 2002 10:54 AMThe Board of Advisors doesn't actually do much, right? Sounds like a cool job. Posted by: Nate at December 10, 2002 11:00 AMSounds like you'll have fun with friends, which is good. And congrats on the game thing! Hey, all of this has reminded me... you'll be having a posh opening party for your book release, right? Right? Deserved good news, good luck. Pete Posted by: Pete at December 10, 2002 11:05 AMcongrads on the Board of Advisors thing. Im sure you'll get to play the games before there relased. But after reading the previous entry, i cant belive they cut your sceenes, that just sucks so,so,so much ass..... Posted by: numb at December 10, 2002 11:14 AMAtta boy! Now your cookin' with gas! Posted by: Angela at December 10, 2002 11:14 AMAWESOME. I'M VERY EXCITED AND HAPPY way cool for you wil...keep the chin up! Posted by: d.burr at December 10, 2002 11:15 AMThat's great Wil! I'm sure you'll have a great time watching it with friends. On another note, I think all the monkeys should write in or post a note on startrek's message board expressing their displeasure with this. You can goto startrek.com, sign up for their message board, and add a message. I don't know of an address, but maybe someone can post it or an email that might be better. Posted by: Tuan at December 10, 2002 11:20 AMWow, very cool! Be careful, Wil, with all the pimping going on here, you're going to get charged with pandering... :-) Woo! Awesome. Congrats on the game thing. Posted by: Jay at December 10, 2002 11:20 AMBecause after all, you can't get away with throwing popcorn at the screen during some fancy-schmancy premiere. But you can during a regular theatre viewing...if the situation merits it of course, such as where your scene was cut, maybe? The Houston Chronicle had an interview with Brent Spiner on Sunday. He is apparently from Houston (I should pay more attention to these things or I will lose my geek-girl status). One of the things he brought up on his own (not an interview question) was your scene being cut and how much it bugged him. He said every cast member lost some good scenes but that they cut yours, when it was (as he called it) "a really good moment" for your character, was pretty suck. And that he hoped it would be in the DVD edition. So see? You are appreciated! Posted by: G.o.P at December 10, 2002 11:21 AMGlad to hear the good news, Wil! Congrats! Working for a gaming company sounds like the sweetest damn job in the world... kickass! And, on a note about Nemesis, I got to catch a press screening this morning at a theater one of my friends works at. Didn't expect to see you at all, but lo and behold! Who's the smartass sitting at the end of the table? Glad to see that you at least got a little screen time and your name was still in the credits. Posted by: Amanda-San at December 10, 2002 11:24 AMGlad you have some good news...forget about assholes, they just arent worth the energy. And if you like the blue hair, then keep it, and fuck em if they cant take a joke. Posted by: chicadee at December 10, 2002 11:29 AMVery VEry COOL! I am sure you will do good things for this new company. I hadn't checked on wwdn in awhile and I was sadden to hear about your recent eartache. But now I am very glad to hear you are going the way of seeing it with friend with us "regular" audience! Posted by: tamila at December 10, 2002 11:33 AMCongrats on the Damage Studios deal! Does this mean you'll be up here more often? :) Although there is not a lot about Rekonstruction on the site(s), the premise sounds very promising. I look forward to hearing more about the project. Posted by: courtney in SF at December 10, 2002 11:35 AMOooooooooooohhhh. Work is good. Creative input essential. Go Will go! Posted by: EnglishBen at December 10, 2002 11:48 AMYou sure know how to take us on a rollercoaster ride, don't you? Hurrah for some good news. I guess it hard to expect hollywood to have manners, but I'd rather be working for a game studio than a movie studio... you can wear whatever you want and show up late without costing them $1000 a minute. Posted by: jodilyn at December 10, 2002 11:56 AMSo, if you see the film and its craptaular as the trailers look, will you be brave enough to speak about it? Or will we be burning too many bridges? Posted by: Electric Monk at December 10, 2002 11:56 AMSo. You didn't get invited to the premiere. But you DID get invited to be on the Board of Advisors. Sounds like you got to be part of something that matters even more long term. And that's a great fit for you anyway! Best of luck! Posted by: Michael Demmons at December 10, 2002 12:08 PMWell Wil, did it really surprise you that you were cut from the movie after all the #@#@ they have done to you in the past? Maybe a book on the behind the scenes tell all would wake some of these self absorbed S.O.B.'s stand up and take you seriously. Good luck on the Games position! Wil, please tell me that they're going to develop this game for OS X as well as Windoze, please please please. Since you own a laptop with OS X and you're on the Board of Advisors, you should advise this. :) Posted by: Brad at December 10, 2002 12:39 PMWow. That sounds like a ton of fun, Wil. Souns like you need a little more excitement and a little less drama right now. Just remember to have fun. Hey Wil. [reading info on company site, looks up] Wow, that's a hefty plan. After they get this game rolling, perhaps they can take on the econmic structure of South America. Also, glad to note above that you are still a warm body in Nemesis -- but the premiere was SNAFU. All my best. Posted by: Drakensykh at December 10, 2002 12:48 PMWoo hoo! uncle willy gots him a JOB. You going to do a voice in the game Uncle Willy? Posted by: Brian at December 10, 2002 01:30 PMWil, when's this PAX thing on tv? Tell us tell us tell us! Posted by: Angie at December 10, 2002 01:32 PMYes, Wil, I was curious as to when that movie was airing on PAX myself. When you find out could you let us know on your blog? Inuki Posted by: Inuki at December 10, 2002 01:39 PMJust a though.... I am wondering... about that press release... how come no mention of Unca Willie's geekhood? No WWDN? No Arena? No rabid-gaming-geek-fan-boy? Now I understand that you're being plugged as their tame "Hollywood Insider", but still, wouldn't it be a good idea to plug the rest too? Posted by: MinnieMouse at December 10, 2002 01:44 PMAwwh, man .. now i am gonna hafta get the dvd just to see the scenes with you in it. Well, i was gonna get the dvd of 'X' anyhow.. but dammit. Queens of The Stoneage Rule!!!! Posted by: nitz at December 10, 2002 01:49 PMWil, So..... we get into the beta testing, right? :) Posted by: Interfusi0n at December 10, 2002 02:11 PMI just read something on Treknation, that some guy saw the Nemisis movie and said that YOU were in it, just not in a speaking role. He also said you got your name in the credits. Hope its true! Very cool -- though the press release could have done a better job on your Bio, wil.. it really does not do you justice.. Not to mention there is no explanation of why you are a boardmember (its obvious the other guys has tons of marketing/business experience) -- but it does not at all talk about your background.. Posted by: none@none.com at December 10, 2002 02:47 PMI like how everytime they mention you, they start off with, Wil entered the... Posted by: ze-mag at December 10, 2002 02:52 PMI got to go to the premiere last night and I was very disappointed that you weren't there. Though I must say that you were wonderful in the film - best reaction shots I've seen in a while. And your name was in the credits and in the little program they gave us. Too cool. The movie was great, better than Kahn IMHO. Very dark with some disturbing scenes that were absolutely fabulous. Posted by: amanda at December 10, 2002 02:56 PMWil, I honestly think the game company biz is going to work out better for you in the long run. For one thing, you'll be contributing to the success of the company by helping it get publicity. (For instance, Doc Searls of Linux Journal and Cluetrain fame is on the advisory board for Jabber and PingID, a couple of companies with which I've been affiliated (more or less), and that definitely helps with publicity.) Not to mention your general gaming expertise, media savvy, and experience dealing with "talent." I looked at the press release to see the other members of the advisory board and the executive team...it looks pretty well-rounded. And the writing biz will also work out better for you in the long run; I know I'll be buying your book when it comes out. (Please tell me you'll be going on a book tour! Please tell me you'll be passing through the Denver-Boulder metro area! :-) ) And as for You-Know-Who over at A Certain Studio That Shall Remain Nameless...well, all I can say is, may the Great Bird of the Galaxy take a massive crap on his head. :-) (But I'll probably go see the movie anyway.) Posted by: Erbo at December 10, 2002 03:14 PMWell, isn't that just like life: yesterday you were nursing reopened wounds, and today you're got something NEW and EXCITING to cheer about. As far as the Trek stuff goes, you can say, with ample justification, "so what?!" You've got a life now. Actually, my take on what happened yesterday was that they were probably just disorganized and some underling simply sent out invitations to the cast and crew as listed on the credits, and Berman was so preoccupied that he forgot to pick up the phone and say "don't forget Wil". It's not a great reason, and it doesn't reflect that well on them, but it may not have been quite as deliberate as you think. But what do I know? Posted by: synchronicity at December 10, 2002 03:37 PMWil,
New exploits for Uncle Willy to tell us all about! Yeah! Posted by: Sunidesus at December 10, 2002 04:01 PMSo now you are a writer/actor/key appointee. Posted by: Fred Fowler at December 10, 2002 04:15 PMTo Wil Glad to hear the great news. I'm sure you will have a great experience.
Cool Wil :) We're all happy for you. Take care of yourself and family. Your too cool a guy.;) Posted by: Artisticspirit at December 10, 2002 04:52 PMHey Wil, Just wanted to drop you a line and to mention that "RICK BERMAN CAN KISS MY SHINY WHITE ASS!!!!!!!!!" and yours too. Good luck on the gaming venture. Posted by: shrednfred at December 10, 2002 04:56 PMHey Wil, When you're sitting in the theatre with your friends and the fans, without all the Hollywood glitter, you'll still be Wil Wheaton.../husband/father/writer/actor/regular guy...and that sounds like a pretty good combination to me! Best, Perhaps what I recently realized will be of value to you. It finally occurred to me that what I do for a living is not what I'll be remembered for by the people who matter. One day, in the distant future when you're gone, the marker on your grave won't say Wil Wheaton, "TV's Wesley Crusher", it will probably say something like, "devoted husband, father, brother, son, friend". What more could one hope for in a life? You've got something worth more than all the movies ever made; family and friends. Posted by: Dave at December 10, 2002 06:19 PMWhen we allow others to make us feel less than we are, we're saying that their opinions about us matter more than our own. Not true, my friend! Being hurt is one thing -- you're entitled. Just don't allow people whose opinions you don't even respect affect how you feel about yourself. Way to bounce back. Posted by: Greg at December 10, 2002 06:58 PMThe future is online gaming. Just watching my 12 year old nephew play Starcraft for 10 hours straight online tells me that. Cool that the place will be in my neck of the woods (SF, Bay Area). Let me know if you're hiring for someone to Microwave Twinkies or to massage your ego. I sure we can arrange something after that last big PAX movie paycheck. P.S. I don't play a lot of the recent Online games, but when I did briefly work for Sega Phantasy Star Online blew me away!!! Check it out sometime if you haven't already. K. Enough already. Congrats! Posted by: RetroRandy at December 10, 2002 08:05 PMcongrualations on the new game company! Hey Wil! I haven't been able to get online in a few days and I just got all caught up on your blog. Oh man did my heart sink when i read about the premiere. That was so terrible to not be included. You're such a great person, you deserve only good things and not stupid crap like that. I'm happy to see that things turned around... congrats on your appointment at Damage Studios!! Frannie Posted by: starboardfrannie at December 10, 2002 09:04 PMOoooo.... the game sounds very cool. Wheeee! =D Posted by: Micah at December 10, 2002 10:19 PMWil, Good to hear about the game co. Damn it, make sure they write an X11/*nix) version, eh? Yes, Linux geeks WILL buy software, especially an awesome game. Hell, I'd even playtest the thing, and I think gaming peaked with Commander Keen! My boy, now, that's a gamer . . . Pax, NEWS FLASH: Just saw the Nemesis screening. Wil/Wesley DOES appear in the movie; he's in the wedding scenes in the opener, on the left side of the wedding table, in Starfleet dress uniform. Wil Wheaton is credited as "Wesley Crusher" in the end credits, at the bottom of the cast credit list. Posted by: Jess Heinig at December 11, 2002 12:02 AMHere's the link to that Houston Chronicle interview of Brent Spiner mentioned by G.o.P December 10, 2002 11:21 AM. http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/story.hts/ae/zest/1691076 Just saw the News Flash above. Congratulations, Wil! At least we get to see you in the movie. And I'm still sending you the good vibes. Posted by: loretta652 at December 11, 2002 12:22 AMHey Wil, Congrats on the game thing! I'm not much into gaming (even if I am an engineer) - but that sounds very cool. Have fun! Posted by: Chewie at December 11, 2002 04:30 AMGood on ya, Wil. Good news indeed! Posted by: Nadia at December 11, 2002 04:37 AMSo this is just one step closer to loosing your monkeys and eventual world domination eh? Good for you Wil! :) Hey Wil, There I was, trying to wake up this morning and I said to myself, "you know, I havn't checked up on my pal, Wil, in a long time. Lets see what he is up to." Yeah, sometimes I really do talk to myself outloud. But anyway at the top of the page were my two favorite things. Thongs and Games. No, I dont wear thongs, but I looked to see if you had some hot Hooters girl modelling one. Imagine the dissappointment when there was no pic to be found. If I may plug myself right here .. I have beta tested many games in the past including Anarchy Online and both of the Asheron's Call MMORPGs. I would love to do the same for Rekonstruction. If I say, "Uncle Willy said I can play" will that get me in when the time comes? hehe Posted by: Widget at December 11, 2002 05:36 AMI've been reading for awhile, but after yesterday's and today's post wanted to comment. I hate sounding like a fortune cookie but in my experience there is always something good to balance the bad... I guess the bad is just there to make us appreciate the good things. I'm sorry about the "oversight" re: the premiere... but in the end I think you are much better off being surrounded by friends and really enjoying yourself and the film. Wil- Maybe a good thing you're NOT in the movie too much. I just read Harry Knowles review, and the nicest thing he said about it was that it totally sucked. No offense to anyone here who's a huge Next Generation fan, but Nemesis is no Khan. Entertaining as hell, one of the best Next Generation movies, but still... not Khan. Don't think they can get that good again. But, then again, I suppose that is why they call it "opinion". Posted by: Amanda-San at December 11, 2002 09:22 AMHey Wil, sucks about the premiere and cameo getting cut. What? They could get you AND Patrick Stewart's big bald beautiful head in the same frame or something? Ahhh, to heck with it. And big congrats on the new gaming venture. And for being "rather remarkable"! Hehehe. Uncle Willy, I'm confused. How come people say you are in the movie, speaking or not, and are listed in the credits but not invited to the premier? That doesn't make sense. Posted by: Angela at December 11, 2002 09:52 AMIt takes a small man to say one thing and never mean to follow it through. It takes a big man to take this in his stride (even when it hurts) and be able to get on with things and not let it deter him. Good on you Wil. Remember one of the best meanings of life: Be happy and contented with what you have, but never afraid to dream and see what it brings you. Posted by: Janis at December 11, 2002 01:00 PMHey Wil... Congrats Wil. That's really cool. On another topic... There is something to be said about seeing movies with your friends and the masses. If it is a good audience then you get the benefit of all the positive energy they bring to the showing... Cheers, Might be a bit late, but we were talking about you on fametracker wil, and this is what one fan had to say regarding nemesis: "It annoys me that Wil Wheaton isn't in any of the movies. I realize they can't age progress him quite the way they can the other characters, but please! Or at least some explanation as to where he is. His damn mom is still there. Is he traversing the universe with the interdimensional traveler guy who told Picard the kid was one genius in a million?" thought you might get a slight chuckle out of that one... excellent news about rekonstruction, by the way and all the best for the holidays... nikki Posted by: nikki at December 11, 2002 07:19 PMSome asshole posted earlier. Sign dupree63@yahoo.com up for all the spam you can. I've always thought that Rick Berman's an asshole since he's just generally whored out the franchise, and fucked over Gene's vision. Now it turns out he's a stereotypical Hollywood grassfucking cockmongrel. I'm sorry to say that I won't not see the movie and eventually buy the DVD in protest, I'm too much of a fanboy for that, but I will happily pirate it, without the guilt that I would otherwise have. Posted by: Dupper at December 11, 2002 07:45 PM((re: yesterday's post: i'm surprised to read at how consistently poorly you've been treated by the star trek people. this isn't gene's vision, by a longshot.)) BUT, you're consistently being treated sweetly by the fans, which i'm sure more than makes up for it. I'm sure Gene would approve. after all, you can't always solve the past, but you can damn well ride on the benefits of it. fuck Berman, the rest of the cast views you as family, and they really enjoy being with you. He can't change that, and when they find out why you didn't come to the premiere, they'll obviously think less of him, if they don't already. the bastard's gonna be real lonely in his egomaniacal position. Posted by: photogeek at December 11, 2002 08:06 PMWil, Random thingies: I remember watching NextGen as a kid, I'm 21 now and though I'm a bit younger than you, I totally identified with Wesley and still do. Whenever I felt critically about the character (and I did at times) I always knew it was the writers' fault and not yours, because very few actors have the privilege of input into their own character. I loved the way your character developed in later years. Is there any "extended universe" stuff (books, games, etc.) to explain whatever happened with Wesley and the Traveler? Your website is awesome, I have so many new insights now into you, the entertainment industry, and the Star Trek franchise. I find myself wondering if Mr. Berman is all he's cracked up to be. I'll always be a fan of Braga and Piller though. Going to see Nemesis this Saturday, though after reading the review on www.aintitcool.com , you may be glad that you are not a part of it. Though if you are on the DVD I will definitely buy it. Have you heard of Peter David's book "Imzadi" ? Best Star Trek book ever. Wesley has a cool role in it as a captain which is pretty neat. He's definitely still viable as a character in the Star Trek universe -- by being linked up with the Traveler he has the potential to appear in any future production, though I guess that more up to the production staff than anyone else. As of now I don't feel comfortable leaving my email for some reason, but I'll email this to you as well. I left your email address in the post thingy, I think you said somewhere that was okay... Yours, Hey, Wil. Didn't catch that yesterday (Finals week) but thought I'd send some love today. You rock and they suck, and that's all there is to it. Hugs! Posted by: Danielle at December 11, 2002 08:59 PMFirst time poster here. Nemisis. I don't get it. Maybe it is just the trailers but it's better to cameo than to be faulted for a train wreck. I'll probably just be watching LoTR. :) Now, if you could get an appearance as your great-great-great-whatever grand father in a prequel where you get to get down with the female vulcan science officer during that sonic shower scene... I'd pay to see that. If Shatner can do it... so can you bubba. Posted by: qthrul at December 11, 2002 09:06 PMDear Wil: Getting left off the Premiere-just as bad as not getting picked for Kickball/softball teams or your classmates birthday party-it hurts only until I hope you have fun at the screening today-have some Raisinets on me! Now, I doubt you're really dying to hear such blatant disregard for a film you acted in, but from what I'm hearing so far (and judging by his previous work), Berman isn't worth your time or your grief--he's a talentless hack who should never have been allowed to shoot anything other than a TV show. Cheer up man, your better off without the prick. Posted by: Jimmy C. at December 12, 2002 03:00 AMIf I were you, I would have called Rick Berman myself and said, Remember the deal?? Well, FUCK YOU. Posted by: Jeremy at December 12, 2002 05:26 AMHe's an "Even Steven"! In the newspaper yesterday I saw a photo of Patrick Stewart at the premiere and felt a pang of sadness. The best revenge is to move on and be hugely successful at the other things you love doing. Move on guy, I'm sure you will be great. I can't believe you cranked out a book just like that.
