« Press any key | Main | Choose » January 13, 2003A Very Special Episode . . .On January 23rd, we are doing a Very Special Episode of the J. Keith vanStraaten Show over at The Comedy Central Workspace! Unlike most Very Special Episodes, this one will not feature any soft lighting and important lessons on life, nor will it feature any retarded children saving a cat from a tree or putting out a fire. What makes this Very Special Episode very special is the cost: FREE! That's right. All you have to do is RSVP, and show up. We'll take care of the rest. If you've been wanting to see your old pal Uncle Willie live, in person, giving up the funny, now's your chance. Here's the info:
I will be wearing The Shirt. Hope to see lots of WWDN readers there! *(monkeys will only appear in your imagination) Comments
hot damn. Im the first to post*smug* Hollywood is a bit far off from Odessa. But I'll watch it on tv. Posted by: chicadee at January 13, 2003 12:07 PMHey Wil, when are you gonna come do a show in Chicago? There's a ton of places here, I'm sure one would book you. Maybe even Second City? Posted by: Jeff at January 13, 2003 12:10 PM2 things to comment on. First of all, will this special show be on Comedy Central, and when. Second of all I was very discouraged by your lame stereo type of the mentally disabled, not retarded. Come on Wil at least try to be politically correct. And shit, i'm the first person to comment on this posting. P.S. This has not discouraged me from continueing to veiw your site Posted by: terry at January 13, 2003 12:11 PMokay the 3rd posting, now this is probably the 4th or 5th post Posted by: terry at January 13, 2003 12:12 PMJeez, there's never a good show in my neighborhood. If it weren't for the fact that Columbus was swimming in Chipotle restaurants, I'd move. Ahhh, too much work to move. Posted by: John Burroway at January 13, 2003 12:12 PMWould love to be there sadly the Atlantic ocean is in the way. However I am syre that it will be the success it deserves to be. Small point I work with the disabled but do not feel particullarly put out by your comments, humour is everywhere or it is nowhere. Political correctness however just gets in the way. Wil, If you look in that place within you dare not look, you'll see me looking back at you. Cause I live too far away. dang. Posted by: Drakensykh at January 13, 2003 12:18 PMTerry: Sorry if you were offended. Think back to all those "Very Special Episodes" of CHiPs, Facts of Life, Love Boat, etc. I was using satire. Sometimes satire offends. Saying "mentally challenging" would have killed the joke. The same way explaining things kills the joke. Posted by: wil at January 13, 2003 12:21 PMYou'll be wearing The Shirt? *Sideshow Bob shudder* I would come, but the 4000-mile round trip makes it unlikely. Posted by: ionicus at January 13, 2003 12:23 PMHey Wil, Am I the *first* person to comment... that is... the first one that is actually in LA and might show up to see ya?! I'm drooling at the chance to see The Shirt up-close-and-personal! -Jocelyn Posted by: jozjozjoz at January 13, 2003 12:25 PMI'll have to be there in spirit, as my grandparents chose to settle in Canada rather than California, leaving me stranded in the snow. And I'll miss The Shirt, too. Dang. Posted by: skandrae at January 13, 2003 12:27 PMDon't worry Wil, I'm sure a lot of us got the reference to those old episodes on tv. And thus got the joke. I know I did. :) Posted by: mandy at January 13, 2003 12:27 PM"The Shirt"? Makes me afraid. Uncle Willie is totally cool, but his choice of dress has always been a bit odd; I'm just not one for metallic, shiny bowling shirts. But what do I know? Posted by: Robb at January 13, 2003 12:34 PMI'll be there Wil...some friends of mine just did a show at the Hudson - looking forward to it! Posted by: Michael Doss at January 13, 2003 12:35 PMDamned Pacific ocean. Any chance of you heading over to Australia for anything? We'd love to have you. http://www.startledfrog.com/beretwearingelitist/ Posted by: Katie at January 13, 2003 12:36 PMJust so everybody knows... The proper term IS mentally retarded, not The word "retarded" means slow. Wil is right. Get off his back for it! :-) Posted by: Michael Demmons at January 13, 2003 12:45 PMCOOL! Posted by: mcfoo at January 13, 2003 12:46 PMNOOOOO!!! I will be in LA on the 16th to the 21st (my girlfriend is going to be on Hollywood Squares). Posted by: todd at January 13, 2003 12:48 PMarrrghhh it's the same thing when i see posters for 'butt numbathon' over at 'aint it cool news'.... oh well.... I'll have to sit up here in the frozen north and quietly wait for your book to be finished... anyhow, break a leg wil.....sounds like it'll be a funny show.... cheers tyson Posted by: Tyson at January 13, 2003 12:49 PMHey Uncle Willie can ya come up to Canada sometime. There is a Second City in Toronto also a Yuk-Yuks comedy club. Oh please oh please oh please!!! Posted by: artisticspirit at January 13, 2003 12:54 PM*pout* I would love to attend, but alas - MN is a bit too far to make the trip. Speaking of J. Keith, what the heck happened to him on Beat the Geeks? Suddenly he was gone and replaced with the current bozo. Anyone know what's up with that? Posted by: Felara at January 13, 2003 12:59 PMThanks for the invitation but by my reckoning it is 8642 km (5371 mil) from my house to your show. *Is Bitter. Bitter, Bitter, Bitter* I'm sure it will be good though. Long live satire and those who don't get it!!! Posted by: EnglishBen at January 13, 2003 01:14 PMI think 'the shirt' is moving farther away from Kitsch and moving more towards 'kinda creepy' Posted by: buntz at January 13, 2003 01:15 PMNobody cool ever comes to Maine..........{You can't tell, but I'm making a big pouty face right now} Again, I find myself wishing desperately that I lived somewhere that didn't have sixty inches of snow on the ground. Posted by: shauna at January 13, 2003 01:21 PMbut will you be wearing the pants? you know, the ones with the writing on them If I can snag the night off I'll definately be there! Posted by: Ocean at January 13, 2003 01:34 PMI wish I lived in Cali. :( Posted by: Pat at January 13, 2003 01:39 PMWish I could make the trip from Chicago to there, I would love to see it!!! I agree with an earlier post, you SHOULD come to Chicago (although as cold as it is right now I dont see why you'd want to) but we'd love to have you!!! :) Posted by: Erin at January 13, 2003 01:56 PMOh sure Uncle Willie, I'll be right there. Just let me fuel up the invisible Harrier jump jet my friend Manny and I keep on the roof. Seriously though, as a major celebrity shouldn't you be making a foray to the Big Snapple, NYC, every now and again? I'm starting to feel like the little lad who had no Uncle. Happy 2003! Unclelessly Yours, Can't make this one, but I'd LOVE to see your show one day :-) If you're ever near the eastern shore of Lake Superior... Just made my reservations! Rock on. Posted by: Music Industry Slave at January 13, 2003 02:14 PM*jealous jealous jealous* At least I finally got to rent Stand By Me on Saturday. I'll see ye one day, if ye not see me first! Argh, matey. (I have no idea what I'm writing. Really.) Posted by: Reena at January 13, 2003 02:37 PM I wish I could Wil, I wish I could. Oh, well, I'm a kindergarten teacher, but I also have a teaching certificate for Teacher of the Handicapped and worked with mentally retarded students. I laughed when I read Wil's comment. It wasn't meant in a mean-spirited way. Also, "mentally challenged" is a politically correct term for people who are uncomfortable with the term "retarded." It is a term that doesn't help retarded people one bit. NOW, I wish I didn't live so far away! I guess I'll have to be content with watching it on TV. Wil, when will it be on? Posted by: Angelwwolf at January 13, 2003 02:53 PMI love the satire, as many of us monkeys do...HAIL THE SHIRT! Posted by: ze-mag at January 13, 2003 02:53 PMWil, Any chance of you and your little troupettes pootling across the pond to do a show in the UK perchance? English Ben will show you the sites of good ol' London Town, then you can nip across the border and the foxmeister here can show you and your gang a bit of the old Iechyd Da. (Good Health in welsh) *starts singing* "We want Willie for our leader, cos he's big and tough and strong" Posted by: Foxychik at January 13, 2003 03:00 PMobviously that guy is "humorly chalenged" Posted by: sean at January 13, 2003 03:11 PMDang it! Why do you have to live all the way over there in California. Or is is why do I live all the way over here in Wisconsin... I already blew my "I'm going to be frivolous and jump on a plane to go see Uncle Willie" trip to go to the ST:TNG 15th convention last fall. You'll just have to tell us all about it so we can experience your funny, at least vicariously. Posted by: Sunidesus at January 13, 2003 03:29 PMWORLD TOUR!!! YEAH do a WORLD TOUR!!! i think............ i think i wanna go. it's been a while since i've seen the j. keith show. and a mighty fine show it is, though it'll feel weird not going to acme :(. Posted by: christy at January 13, 2003 03:42 PMWhen you say free... does this mean you'll buy us airplane tickets too? :::curls up in fetal position::: *cue psycho killer soundtrack* (and I don't mean the Talking Heads.) Karina: Yes. I've pointed that out to other people. Now THIS is winter. Posted by: delphine at January 13, 2003 04:35 PMFirst rule of Wil Wheaton: You will wear The Shirt What the hell is "The Shirt?" I feel that I've missed something important. Just got my tics! Hope to meet you next week, Wil. Any chance of a dramatic reading of your two lines from "Nemesis?" Anyone up for sending a few tickets to Berman's office? Posted by: Adam at January 13, 2003 04:56 PM*phew*
where's the east coast love, uncle willie???? ooooh - sounds like fun... and FREE! i am all about free. i have no idea what the shirt is about, but i'm intrigued. if my husband doesn't want to go, i might just have to drag another friend or show up alone! Posted by: arifa at January 13, 2003 05:17 PMI'm just gonna sit here and pout because some people don't have 2-3 feet of snow outside right now. At least Bears have the good sense to hibernate. But not us Nooooo. We humans still have to go to school. :( California. Bah hum bug!
Sam. Posted by: Samantha Lee at January 13, 2003 05:32 PMFor those of you who have never seen "The Shirt" here is a link: One day, before I die, I will see you live in California. (I live in Alaska) Good luck on the show! Posted by: Christal at January 13, 2003 06:11 PMIf I can get a babysitter, I'll be there. Posted by: Vanessa at January 13, 2003 06:28 PMI'll only go if you pay my transportation fares, and even then I reserve the right to back out if I get that not-so-fresh feeling again. Let's see...I think this is the sixth, no, seventh time in my life I've wished to live in California. Which is seven more times than I've ever wished to live in Texas. I think there's a mental bungee cord that will only let me get so far away from the Atlantic Ocean. Good luck, hope the show goes well, and I look forward to reading here about how it went and when I can catch it on TV. Posted by: Shannon at January 13, 2003 06:51 PMIt must be pretty expensive buying cigarettes for 100 monkeys. Posted by: Fred Fowler at January 13, 2003 06:56 PMWil, What do you think of the name "Sharon Murphy"??? Although this has nothing whatsoever with your post Wil, I would just like to say thanks for introducing me to Geocashing. SO MUCH FUN. My boyfriend and I went this weekend and had a blast. Posted by: Jess at January 13, 2003 08:04 PMHOT DAMN! IVE JUST BEEN INVITED TO A PARTY BY A HOLLYWOOD CELEBRITY!
IM SOOO THERE! Posted by: rerhinox at January 13, 2003 08:09 PMI wish I could go but alas I have to save my pennies for Vegas. Have a wonderful show. :) Posted by: sifichick@yahoo.com at January 13, 2003 08:12 PMCummon... What's funnier than a smoking monkey? Posted by: Fraize at January 13, 2003 08:22 PMa barrel of 'em Yes, indeedy, that should be a "special episode" - especially with Fred Willard. Although he is credited way down on the list, his performance as "Buck", the commentator in "Best In Show" was hysterical... Buck: "Do you know the difference between a rectal thermometer and a tongue depressor?" Great writing by Guest and Levy, as well. Posted by: JeffNTx at January 13, 2003 08:39 PMLOL munkeyz :) Posted by: mcfoo at January 13, 2003 08:49 PMDude - Fred Willard? What, were Pauly Shore and Bobcat Goldthwait busy? Actually, Fred Willard was pretty funny in "Best of Show", but, comedy legend? "Yeah, I remember seeing all the greats - Milton Berle, Lucille Ball, Richard Pryor, George Carlin, Eddie Murphy, Fred Willard, Carrot Top - man, they were legends..." Posted by: kingrob76 at January 13, 2003 08:53 PMAck! I will actually be in CA then, visiting from NYC. But, I'll be 6 hours away, in Santa Cruz! Damn unwieldy state. I'd have to plot a possible route for myself... but it's unlikely. Sigh. Oh well. I bet The Hudson Theatre isn't wheelchair friendly anyway. (/sour grapes) Hmmm...Fred Willard, Zack, Wil, Adam And The Chesters, and Tim Roth and 99 of his smokin' little buddies. Now all you need is a guest walk-on by Helen Bonham Carter in that black Ava Gabor wig. Well, you said imagination. Posted by: JeffNTx at January 13, 2003 09:46 PMHey Wil if you come to Canada...(Toronto) You'll get BIG swinging balls........SnowBalls!! ;D Posted by: artisticspirit at January 13, 2003 10:07 PMWil,
But monkey always appear in my imagination - Damn. Posted by: Kevynn Malone at January 13, 2003 11:04 PM Best of luck Wil, but sorry I wont be there. Western Australia is a bit far off from Hollywood. Anyway, I hope all goes well and have fun I meant MONKEYS. Double damn. Posted by: Kevynn Malone at January 13, 2003 11:05 PMAw, fudgemonkies. I once again say, damn being a poor college student that lives 8 hours away by car. Cause yeah. And even if I had a car...that'd be quite the long trip for one show. Ah well, maybe some other time. Yet another reson to wish that my friend Olivia and I had hashed out that plan to be roommates...(she lives down there in Pasadena) i asked my my little yellow bus driver If he could take me to your show wil. he said its a looooooong way from hawaii.
Jimminy Cricket Wil ! I'm stuck having to work that night because of the wimp supercrapbowl gig here in San Diego! maybe next time. Posted by: wade art at January 13, 2003 11:54 PMWell I'm normally in the UK so coming to watch you would be a little bit of a streach....BUT this time I am on holiday in the US during the time period! Woot! Living in London, England - I won't even get to see it on TV :( Posted by: Manga at January 14, 2003 02:15 AMSee how big your UK wing of WWDN is? Think about it... I used to wear a funny shirt too and my friends would laugh but it has since become legendary - just dont let the shirt get more limelight though! :) Posted by: Phil at January 14, 2003 07:43 AMSadly, below zero temperatures and my work schedule and the fact that California is 1500 miles from here means I won't be able to see your great show... but I wish you all the best! Posted by: tamara at January 14, 2003 08:32 AMNina Gordon? Sweet!!!! Oh how I wish I was in Hollywood for that. Posted by: Jason at January 14, 2003 08:39 AMDarn. Man, this is sweet... /d'oh Posted by: DanUK at January 14, 2003 08:52 AMWil: Okay i understand. It's just that my oldest sister is mentally disabled, and when i hear retarded and other words describing mentally disabled people, it kind of sparks a nerve. I will get over it. Good Luck on CC Posted by: terry at January 14, 2003 08:57 AMI knew I should have made plans to go to LA earlier! Heh. Posted by: belinda at January 14, 2003 11:18 AMIs there any way one of Wil's shows could be recorded and streamed on the internet.. Us Texas folk would like to see Wil give up the funny!!!
