if ($TIME==free) then {make_cool_stuff}

Sometimes, free time is a good thing.

Anne is finally home, and I can walk away from the computer for a few hours. Hooray!

Once you get computers in your blood, you can't escape. You can walk away for a little while..maybe a few hours, maybe a week, but you can't get away for good.

Computers are addictive.

The internet is worse.

Resistance is futile.

Go have some good family time Wil. Enjoy every moment with your wife. Life is short so enjoy every minute.

Best to you and your family

Wil,
I hope you do not go through computer withdraw. Remember that life has many other things to offer. She is only your wife. Dude,turn off the machine for a while.

I know that feeling.. that feeling of having an imblical cord from you to the computer.

Must... Cut.. cord.. must.. get.. a .. life!

There are times I think the mouse is actually another part of my body. Hmm Darn.

At least from the sound of it, I am not the only one. YEAH!

Hope you have a good evening with you family tonite, Wil. Everyone deserves some good quality family-bonding time.

Posted by: Bubblerella at February 16, 2003 05:19 PM

DOH!

"==" is should be . . . and I probably should have defined make_cool_thing as a function, but then I'd have to get into including libraries, and that's just way over my head.

Have a great time with Anne, Wil. I'm sure she will enjoy your undivided attention as much as you will hers. :)

Take care,

Posted by: Janece at February 16, 2003 05:45 PM

Wil,

We could all use some time to step away, take a deep breath and enjoy the family. Hugs to Anne and the boys!

Me -- I just spent the day on the phone with siblings after our dad was injured in an accident. He's okay -- but for a few hours there all us far-flung brothers and sisters were burning up the cell phone lines trying to find out how he was doing. Just spoke to him; he's tired and in pain but going to be okay.

Reminded me that they won't always be there to talk to -- so we have to savor our loved ones while we have them.

Posted by: SpaceWriter at February 16, 2003 05:49 PM

Yes, spending time with the wife over the computer will get you many points for later use, haha.

ASSHAT TROLL ALERT! ^^^^

So anyway Wil, since you mentioned walking away from the computer, I decided to do the same. So I slipped ST II:TWOK into the DVD player. About a third of the way through the movie and I found myself right back on the computer looing something up. Specificly I thought I read that Checkov (Walter Koenig) was not in the TOS episode "Space Seed", yet in STII, Kahn specificly "remembers" Checkov, stating that he "never forgets a face".

I know that is completely irrelavent to your post. Sorry *embarassed monkey-do-bad look*

Incidently, I found these links, for all of my fellow Anti-Berman ST fans out there ;}

Probably old news but I figure what the hell...since I'm stuck to this computer like the ice on the streets outside, might as well read something I find interesting...

'=' could be correct. Some languages use '=' for comparison and ':=' for assignment. There's not really enough context to know the language for sure, and the intent seems clear enough for the intended audience.

Although in Java it might look more like:
if( this.getTime().getCost().equals(Cost.FREE) ) {
Stuff s = new Stuff();
try {
s.setCool(true);
} catch( UncoolException e ) {
System.out.println("TODO: Get a job tomorrow.");
throw e; }
return s;
}

Posted by: wil at February 16, 2003 10:03 PM

Wil,
sad thing is - we (or is it us? i hate that...) nerds are a dying breed - the machines are getting too plug-n-pray and the code is getting too wordy....
sometimes i sit back and remember my cassette tape memory and my 17K pages of code to write a simple calculator prog on my TI-99 4/a. *sigh*
I've been workin with Dell after movin to Pennsylvania, and the machines are so simple to set up for these companies.... ghost image on the server - toss in a floppy - turn machine on - hit enter when complete... *shrug* and they want people with multiple $5,000+ certifications to do this....
ok. i'm ranting. i'm jealous - you're spending time with yours - I should be doing the same...
hasta.

Although in C# it would look like:

if( this.GetTime().GetCost().Equals(Cost.FREE) )
{
Stuff s = new Stuff();
try
{
s.SetCool(true);
} catch( UncoolException e )
{
Console.WriteLine("TODO: Get a job tomorrow.");
throw e;
}
return s;
}

Now that's innovation!

Hey wouldn't it be more common to use

somethingNeat = StuffFactory.getInstance(freeTime);
somethingNeat.make();

instead? More like the Factory pattern then? ;-)

Posted by: sed at February 16, 2003 11:11 PM

Indeed. So who's going to write the imported classes so we can actually run this thing?

Posted by: Tony at February 16, 2003 11:17 PM

I got one of 'em done
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

package net.wilwheaton.coolstuff;

public class StuffFactory {

// Partner is a concrete class
// that implements the CoolStuff interface
private static Partner wife = null;

// there can be only one ;-)
public static CoolStuff getInstance(long pFt) {
if (null == wife) {
wife = new Partner();
}
return wife;
}

// but there is this new technology
public static CoolStuff getMoreCoolStuff(long pT) {
Partner anne = (Partner) StuffFactory.getInstance(pT);
return anne.clone();
}
}

are we missing the point here? Perhaps.

Hello,

For I have not read Wil's website for a week I didn't read that he is not in the best of moods, and I would love to join in and make his mood a bit better then it is right now.

For Wil,

If it wasn't for your website I wouldn't know what I would have done to pass my time. For a while my life sucked big time. I didn't know what to do with my life till I found your website. To read how your life was going and your thoughts made me to look for a job and go to school again. Now I am a bookkeeper and although it does not sound like a cool job I love it and enjoy it. And even right now I am trying to join the Army to make my life more purposefull but I and other people need you to cheer up and start enjoying life more. Spend some quality time with your stepchilderen and your wife. Get a fix done on your book. Everyone may say the book sucks, but that is a small group of people. Send out the book, and stop worrying and start enjoying.

Those are my 2 cents worth of telling you that you are a great guy

ok Wil you can't have gotten very far with Ann...you keep commenting on your comments (grins) Take a break and Lay Lady Lay or something.

Posted by: indigolady at February 17, 2003 11:48 AM

I have to use a disclaimer before posting this: I'm going to sound TOTALLY out of touch, because I AM totally out of touch...I listen to too much Howard Stern in the morning, on my way to work, because he's pretty damn funny, at least when he's insulting celebrities in his own not so subtle yet still subversive way. His central message when commenting upon the impending war is simply "Bomb Sadaam," "Kill Osama" and "What are we going to do, let the terrorists win?" He's pretty much a Bush athletic supporter, which makes him come off as a simpleton, or at least a fatcat who is too comfortable in his millions to look deeper into the real issues we are facing. I have to admit, because I just stumbled upon WWDN last week, I'm realizing how many people are speaking out against the war, and am trying to become more informed and involved. Thanks for all of your insights, and thanks for the great movies, Wil. I've printed out your filmography from a Google search, and am going to make a point of trying to rent as many of them as possible. Maybe the general public IS totally being snowed. When I was in college, during the Gulf War, I was listening to "Die For Oil, Sucker" by Jello Biafra, and believing in it. Now, I've become complacent in my rat-race mentality. What the HELL is going on? I feel so stupid, sometimes. Thanks for letting me add my two utterly confused, humbled cents.

Wil Wheaton Filmography:

• Deep Core (2000)
• Python (2000)
• Fag Hag (1998)
• Flubber (1997)
• Mr. Stitch (1995)
• The Liar's Club (1993)
• December (1991)
• Toy Soldiers (1991)
• The Farm (1987)
• Long Time Gone (1986)
• Stand by Me (1986)
• The Shooting (1982)

This is my website, and I will do with it what I'd like. I asked that the discussion be taken to the message board.

Because this is my website, I expect you to respect that decision. If not, you're more than welcome to have your own discussion elsewhere.

What a joke! Just because people were posting comments Wil didn't like he deletes them all. What's that over in the sidebar Wil? Stop Internet Censorship: Free Speech Online? Hypocrite! I know what you're saying that this is your page and you can do what you like but you've already made your choice by allowing comments at all. I'd send you some, but we didn't really get much in KY. We mostly got ice. Besides I don't even know if my installation of PGP works. No one to test it with! :}

Posted by: WebNuT! at February 17, 2003 05:21 PM

Wil,
I've always been a fan. Moving on this is your website and it is your right to do what you wish. My only argument would be that you seem to support free speech. If all website owners deleted/prevent access to posts then that free speech would only be in the hands of those able (financial or technically) to own a website. Which I personally think s a bad thing. I understand you might have reason to refer people to the soapbox. I only take issue with the loss of the original posts.

P.S. Senator Byrd was a KKK member and I don't forgive/support KKK or SS members for anything as a mater of habit.

Posted by: Ken at February 17, 2003 05:31 PM

Wil,

Right about now if you lived at our house you and Anne would be looking at a blizzard and would be sitting in front of a crackling fire all by yourselves... that's what this blizzard is doing for me and the SO in New England. However, as much as I like snow and all that, I'd swap places with you guys in SoCal for a day or two just to see some SUN!!!! ;)

Just for grins, I was checking flights to Burbank. If only the airports weren't closed...

cheers!

p.s. to Ken and Whatever: it IS Wil's site and he did set up the Soapbox so you could express your opinions. It works quite well, actually.

If you're too lazy to sign in and use it, then you dont' have ANY business throwing a tantrum about being censored. Yeah, I'm guilty of using the blog comments for war comments too. Sorry Wil... got carried away.

Posted by: SpaceWriter at February 17, 2003 05:43 PM

SpaceWriter, the soapbox is a good idea, taking the link down so people can't read the original comments (some critical of Wil, I was only critical of Sen. Byrd) is a bad idea.

Posted by: Ken at February 17, 2003 06:12 PM

Ken:

Be careful if Wil really gets upset with what you "type" he will BAN you from WWDN as has happened to me.

Strange if you say things contrary to Wil's opinion on WWDN he will silence you via IP Address.

If you say something contrary to Saddam in Iraq he will also silence you.

Thanks Wil for taking the "IP route".

Juno, Freenet, Yahoo, MSN, AOL that is a LOT of IP's to "Forbid".

Rather than asking me to explain a comment I made he got rightous and took the easy way out, which was to POST a negative comment about my POST and then "Forbid" me from WWDN so I could not respond.

"Free Speech?"

Thanks

TJ

Posted by: Tom at February 17, 2003 06:16 PM

Perhaps Wil removed the posts because you posted them in the blog comments area instead of the soapbox, TJ.

Just a thought. But it's none of my business so I'll not speak of it anymore.

Yea, I know. I'm adding to the problem here. Sorry Wil.

Posted by: WebNuT! at February 17, 2003 08:23 PM

Guten Abend,

Freie Rede? Zensur!

Please excuse my German.

Posted by: NYC at February 18, 2003 01:08 AM

Hi Wil,

I expected you to move the discussion to the soapbox. And by that, I mean "move" - not "remove" the discussion altogether and expect people to start over again. But yes, this is your webpage and yes, you can do whatever you want to with it. Of course.

I am a part of the UE community. As a part of that community, I've come to expect some level of accountability. We take responsibility for what we say to each other at UE - in posts as much as in comments. Although I know I can't expect the same of all the wwdn monkeys (there are just so many), I really hoped I could count on you for some of that accountability.

During the course of the discussion yesterday, it was clear that the argument over war could go on ad nauseum. You're right that such discussions may best be moved to another forum.

Several of us also asked you about your hats-off link to Robert Byrd. I woke up this morning wondering how you had responded.

I am disappointed to find that your response is, well, cowardly. Please respond, Wil.

Were you aware of Senator Byrd's record when you linked to his speech? Does this record matter to you? Does it matter to you less than does, say, Trent Lott's record?

I am asking you these questions only because you are here putting your opinions in the public eye just as I do on my own page. If you want my own opinion, I think both Lott and Byrd should have been gone from government long ago, I am a registered Independent, and you can read my page to find out more about me if you care.

Don't hide from this, Wil. If you're going to go out and protest with thousands of people, you should be able to put together a coherent argument all by yourself.

Please do.

Posted by: Bronwyn at February 18, 2003 05:22 AM

Wil:

I too am sorry for adding to this "problem", but to be clear I was not complaining about the comments being removed I was complaining that my IP was removed in an attempt to silence me.

Furthermore, my comments were in response to Wil's post which is what this area is for.

If Wil blocked every IP that posted a BBS comment here in that thread the list looks like this:

Tom(ME),SteveR, Suzane, RandumTangent, Bill, Nephratard, Scott, Dev Brown, Dev (not Brown), jb, Sapphire, Daniel, Mary, NYC, Brad, Spacewriter, ellen, jl, EnglishBen, Fluffy, Tabby, Julia, SusanH.

Now I suppose I should add WebNut.

Of course if he did that it would be a small community indeed.

Long Live Free Speach!

TJ

NYC. . . have a native German speaker read what you just wrote. You didn't say "All hail Wil the new leader," although you tried. Instead of "hail" as in "accolade" you got the meterological term. I and my Austrian coworker are laughing pretty hard at you right now. :-)

Next time, try using a dictionary instead of an online translator.

Posted by: Bronwyn at February 18, 2003 08:31 AM

Wil, good work. I see you titled that post 'Voice and Fist'. Good to see that the voice of the people only belongs to the elite who can afford to have pages hosted and to those who agree with you. Keep it up. I challenge you to re-open that thread.

Posted by: Himmler at February 18, 2003 09:02 AM

Actually TJ, I wasn't attempting to slam you or be rude or accuse you of anything. I was simply making a suggestion as to why Wil removed your posts. If you were directing them at him in response to his post and they were removed, then that is between you and Wil. My apologies if you felt I was attacking you directly.

Incidently Wil, I was considering setting up a Linux box here at home, but then I got to reading through the comments in "Stream" and now I'm not so sure! I have a low tolerance to computers that refuse to do what I want them to, when I want them to do it :}

Oh, and have you ever programmed in Active Server Pages? Fun Fun....(not) :}

You probably didn't even know Byrd was in the KKK till it was pointed out to you today, did you? For such an intelligent young man you are not very well informed. Go ask the Iraqis in 10 months whether they were better off before or after the war. Ask the Afghanis, Kosovars, Bosnians, Haitians, Panamanians and Granadians as well. War sucks, but sometimes you have to do it. Appeasement leads to the rise of tyranny. Read some history... I still enjoy your site and wish you the best.--scott
