« fhqwhgads | Main | 3^3 » February 27, 2003Hall and Oates had more number one hits than any other band in the 80s.I stayed up way too late last night, and got up way too early this morning. After getting the kids to school, I decided to go back to bed, and just sleep until I wasn't tired any more. That was two hours ago. I haven't closed my eyes once, because I've been watching Free Enterprise. Man, I know these guys. I am these guys. Every single one of them. And William Shatner is my Hero. Comments
Do I win? Posted by: blewismaltz at February 27, 2003 11:21 AM"And William Shatner is my Hero." OMG!! Mine, too!! *gag* Posted by: JobiWan at February 27, 2003 11:21 AMHAHA... I LOVE Free Enterprise. It's a great movie for any geek! Everyone should see this one! Everyone I've shown it to has loved it! Posted by: Ryan at February 27, 2003 11:22 AMDoes the Wheaton family have TiVo? Because if you do, and "Free Enterprise" never got recorded for you before, then I've lost all faith in those machines. Posted by: Mike at February 27, 2003 11:24 AMNever give up , never surrender. the moves Stinky Posted by: Stinky at February 27, 2003 11:25 AMUmmmm... why have I never heard of "Free Enterprise"? I'm losing site of the geek life... I wonder if Blockbuster will have this... hmmm... Posted by: Eddy at February 27, 2003 11:27 AMFree Enterprise? I saw like 5 minutes of it and turned it off. It was kinda boring! Posted by: Conn at February 27, 2003 11:28 AMYou crack me up Wil Wheaton. I needed that today. Posted by: Hecubus at February 27, 2003 11:32 AMI have never seen Free Enterprise.. What is it about?? Is it another spoof making fun of Trek fans? JT Posted by: JT at February 27, 2003 11:35 AMI loved that 'Bill' drank Pink Squirrls Posted by: erict at February 27, 2003 11:37 AMTwo confused film makers approaching 30, who also happen to be sci-fi buffs and STAR TREK fanatics, seek out William Shatner in hopes that he can give them the sort of life guidance they imagine the man who played Kirk would be able to give. What they find is a washed up actor in a one-man production of JULIUS CAESAR. This unique indie comedy features a fantastic performance by Shatner, playing an alternate-universe version of himself with great aplomb, and numerous inside jokes for hardcore TREK heads. Posted by: Susan H at February 27, 2003 11:42 AMAmen to that. I've often told people that I didn't have a father, I had Star Trek Re-runs. So, technically, I'm saying William Shatner is my dad. Posted by: john at February 27, 2003 11:42 AMDon't you mean William 'Fuckin' Shatner? Posted by: potio at February 27, 2003 11:43 AMBest line: "I would never live in the 24th century. I fucking hate the Next Generation!" Posted by: EricTyler at February 27, 2003 11:49 AMYeah, but Huey Lewis and the News is still the best. Posted by: Aestro at February 27, 2003 11:50 AMI really need to see the rest of that movie sometime. I have only seen a couple of bits and pieces, and I thought they were funny. Maybe I'll use next month's blockbuster coupon on that. Posted by: AngelGypsy at February 27, 2003 11:58 AM"Free Enterprise" kicks ass! "Hey kid...ever seen Logan's Run?" "Nah...It's probably some dumb sports movie!" "SPORTS MOVIE?!?!?" ...maybe I'll watch that later after I'm done mourning for Mr. Rogers...:( ...sad, sad day in the neighborhood. Posted by: Jason @ BowlingShirt.com at February 27, 2003 11:58 AMThe Julius Ceasar rap is brilliant. Beyond brilliant. "Brutus is an honorable man." Go, Bill. Posted by: qowf at February 27, 2003 12:05 PMGreat movie. Posted by: metsfan at February 27, 2003 12:05 PMIf a DVD could get worn out, my Free Enterprise disc would be toast by now. It's creepy how everyone I loan it to ends up buying a copy of it themselves. Posted by: Derek at February 27, 2003 12:09 PMBill Shatner is my hero as well Wil. I talk to him about once a week or so via Williamshatner.com, and he is always busy with some new project. I have yet to see Free Enterprise, but have heard nothing but good stuff about it. Best to you and your family Wil, Where Free Enterprise fails is that it points out too many of it's references. When they're breaking up and he walks away and she says "Where are you going?" That was great and it should have ENDED there. But then they felt the need to POINT OUT it was a Star Wars reference. Ruined it for me. But still great if only because now I know how to pronouce "Xixor!" Posted by: buntz at February 27, 2003 12:38 PMWell I am glad I am not the only person who hasn't seen this movie. Now I will have to get it. Blah.. Don't you hate when you think you are going to go back to bed and NEVER do.. To many days I have gone through with only 3 hours of sleep because "I'm going back to bed as soon as I finish reading this." 9-hours later...ack! "I really was gonna go back to bed!" Posted by: Bubblerella at February 27, 2003 12:39 PMGotta love VH! Behind The Music. The Hall and Oates one... wow. How many times have I seen that one this week? Posted by: NataliaM at February 27, 2003 12:45 PM"Free Enterprise"..is a hoot!! Posted by: bluecat/redblanket at February 27, 2003 12:48 PMFree Enterprise.....hilarious movie. It was fun to see Eric McCormick in a role pre-"Will & Grace." And I agree..."I would never live in the 24th century. I fucking hate the Next Generation" best line in the movie (not because I agree with it for TNG is the only Trek incarnation that I've ever liked, but because I just appreciated it for the comedic value). Posted by: Michelle at February 27, 2003 12:53 PMWhat is the Free Enterprise? Posted by: Agi at February 27, 2003 12:53 PMI hope 'Free Enterprise' is better than Dr. Strangelove. We finished it in class today and I have got to say that was about the worst thing I have seen since Blair Witch Project. Now I have to write a paper on it. ACK! I still love ya though! I loved Free Enterprise. It's an amazing movie!!! Have you guys heard about the sequel that the producers would like to make? Posted by: Garak at February 27, 2003 12:57 PMDuuude! You guys are a bunch of geeks!!! i heart bill shatner, but i love hall and oates too... and i will sing along to all those number one hits..except maybe Maneater. and Free Enterprise rocks my socks off. Posted by: jenne at February 27, 2003 01:21 PM... and if you've never watched the credits to Free Enterprise, DO SO! There are as many in-jokes there as there were in the rest of the movie. My friends don't 'get' this movie. What ya gonna do, eh? Jenne, I see you up there. I prefer WFS' version of "Mr. Tambourine Man" better than his "Lucy." MISTER TAMBOURINE MAN!!! MISSSSTTTTER TAMBOURINNNNNEEEE MANNNNNNN!! Word up to Hall & Oates, but that fact SCARES me. Jeez....Get the fuck outta bed and take you dog for a walk or something. 80's music is by far the best decade for music. No question. From Motley Crue to Duran Duran. Can't beat it. Why have they not done a Star Trek: Fear Factor yet??? Peter Sellers plays, like 5 or 6 roles in that movie. Peace On Earth = Purity Of Essence. Ewwwww. You know, fluoridated water is a commie plot.

Hey was the art directed Free Enterprise one of the coolest films i worked on, yes almost every one there was a geek one way or another, glad you liked the film Wil Posted by: jedione at February 27, 2003 06:17 PMOne of my favorite "Goofy/Cult Movie Night" lineups, must be shown in order: Logan's Run By the end you've either laughed yourself silly or you're just not in touch with your Inner Star Trek Nurd. You said "And William Shatner is my Hero". Are you sick? have you been downloading to much porn? Don't you remember how much of a jerk he was to you on the "Weakest Link". Oh crap that was not him, that was you flirting with the gal from Voyager, and pissin her off. Well Wil, step away from the elmers glue, and get those bad thoughts of William Fawken Shatner out of that head of yours, and finish that best seller that you are writting. Continued good luck on the book, and just kidding about calling you a jerk, your just a "HORNBALL". Posted by: terry at February 27, 2003 08:21 PMTHIS IS FOR BILLY. Wesley is not, and does not look like a fudgepacker. Maybe your just have crush on Wil, in hopes that he will leave his hetro life and come pack your fudge (wich will never happen). Wes is an important character in the Star Trek Universe. And one more thing Data can live after death. Don't you remember SPOCK! So sit on my PHOTON TORPEDO and spin! :-) Posted by: terry at February 27, 2003 08:28 PMWow. Exercise, stop looking at porn and playing with yourself, get out of the house and into the fresh air, learn how to have a conversation with a woman and get a real life. Then you won't be so jealous. Posted by: Angelwwolf at February 27, 2003 09:16 PMHall and Oates? Only one of the reasons I gave up commercial music by the end of the 70's. And they were one of the better things around (shudder). Four days and a wake-up til the bombs drop --- March 4th, the next new moon -- unless someone talks some sense to Shrub. Welcome to the death of our national honor. I've heard of the concept but have never been sweet dreams Thank you Wil for your indirect recommendation for an addition to my movie collection. By the other comments in here, it sounds like this could be a humorous movie. Cheers, And I thought I was the only one to know that about H2O. Posted by: Jim Cripps at February 28, 2003 03:15 AMPersonally, I liked Free Willy better. And Terry Nunn (Berlin) is way cuter than Hall or Oates put together and deserves more hits. Mind out of the gutter, Wil. Hall and Oates - sounds like a breakfast cereal. WFS, WFS, WFS is the man. Oh no. I hear the crack of the whip. Back to work. Posted by: Nyarl at February 28, 2003 04:56 AMbut god, shatner rapping "to be or not to be" at the end was just too painful... I was fortunate to get to see them in concert last fall - free tickets from a local radio station. They were awesome! One of the best concerts I've ever been to. sounds like you have something against MLK. interesting Posted by: buntz at February 28, 2003 12:16 PMYou shocked me when you used the word "free enterprise" there. I'd just been reading an interesting online essay about (well, okay - the perpetuation of cultural paradigms through film and literature), and there was a good deal about Star Trek. It included examining the symbolism and overtones of the name 'enterprise', and also sort of debunked the myth about Star Trek as a beacon of ethnic equality. That was the last site I was on before coming here. Strange. (I recommend the article, I think you'd like it too. Address is www.brightlightsfilm.com/30/crusoe1.html) See ya. It comes off a satellite set up so no commercials or moronic talking. It's a lot of gems from my jr. high and high school days: The Cure, Public Image Limited, The Godfathers, Concrete Blonde, XTC, Sisters of Mercy, The Smiths, The Cult, Madness, The Specials, The Ramones, Depeche Mode, and Siousxie and the Banshees to give you a idea. Yeah, man, to coin a campy phrase: Music, the soundtrack of our lives. =o) Posted by: Jasmine at March 1, 2003 05:41 PMHall & Oates? I was gonna say 'Say It Isn't So', but then I wised up and said to myself, "You're Outta Touch". Gotta keep this short... I've got a date with a Rich Girl. She and her sister are Private Eyes. Her name is Sara. We're gonna play some ball: One-On-One, that is. I've been told she's a Maneater, but I Can't Go For That. Don't want to miss her, last time I was late for dinner I saw her speeding away and called 'Wait For Me', but she didn't hear me. Waiter said 'She's Gone'. That was a hard lesson... I guess you might call it Adult Education. Off I go... can't wait to see Sara Smile. Free Enterprise Rocks! THERE IS NO SANCTUARY! Posted by: Jake Blues at March 2, 2003 12:26 AMFrank scares me Posted by: buntz at March 2, 2003 05:33 AMCaptain Kirk is the shit. lmao. yeah i really don't know what to say cause more then likely i'm betting you will just overlook this but you really don't know how psyched i am that i have found a website about you that is by YOU. I was never a real big fan of star trek until I turned a i guess 8 or 10 and then i got hooked, and the thing i remember most about watching Star Trek: TNG is looking up to you. I know you must be asking yourself "He looked up to me?" but you were everything cool to me at that time hell you still are. When TNN was doing that marathon and you and other cast members were saying stuff in between commercials i was cracking up at you cause they kept bleeping you out and yeah it just made me laugh and it reminded me of well me cause i live in a very small town and sayign goddamn is an immortal sin in which you won't live down and yeah it just reminded me how much i looked up to you and yeah i'm just not shutting up now so i'll think i will save some embarrassment and stop. lmao. More Wil! More Wil! Gotta love the new TNN for giving us so much more Wil than we've ever had. For those that don't know... TNN will be running that behind the scenes looks at TNG this week so everyone can get their Wheat-on. Then on Friday it's TNG uncut which should be interesting. What I don't quite get and perhaps Wil, you could shed some light on this. I know that TNN is part of the Viacom family of companies hence all the Trek-tacular showings of TNG. However, so is UPN and it has hardly been used as a full on/full blown Trek promotion vehicle like TNN but why? I've been away from this site awhile tending to my newborn son and it's great to be back checking on all things Wil. Hope your book is going miraculously well. Ciao Posted by: James Chicago at March 2, 2003 04:25 PM"Fantastic Voyage" was a cool movie. FREE ENTERPRISE is a really cute, witty movie -- the perfect film for genre buffs, especially those who remember the 70's and 80's... I saw a midnight showing in Westwood when it was first released, and to my astonishment, someone I worked with at the time -- Dan Schweiger, who is a professional music editor -- had a speaking role in the movie (as, get this, "Schweiger" who works behind a sound board!). Toupee or not toupee, give Shatner a lot of credit for his sense of humor, and willingness to poke fun at his own image. He's really quite wonderful in the movie...but yeah, he is, after all, just playing an exaggerated version of himself. I heard that the filmmakers had envisioned a sequel to FREE ENTERPRISE, involving a character's obsession with Princess Leia/Carrie Fisher, but I don't know if it's come to any kind of reality. So Wil, what's the status of your book? Do let us know. And contrary to what people might believe, self-publishing is actually more respected than it used to be. (Anne Rice, Jack London, and Robert Walker all started out by self-publishing, I think.) Granted, it can be expensive, but the printing options available nowadays make it much more affordable -- even for printing just 100 copies, too. But there's something beneficial about the experience, more than merely seeing something you've written in print. You have control, and, especially, you set your own pace. Book publishing is a really nasty business, and even the very best of scenarios (your manuscript lands you and agent who makes you a killer deal with a publishing house, the books sells a fortune, and you option the movie rights for more money than your parents ever made in their lives) can be tiresome. Unless your subject is timely (a non fiction work, say, of recent world news events) the "normal" waiting period for a book to hit the shelves can be up to a year or more. Also, book editors have control over manuscripts not unlike movie studio heads with a director's film; they cut, revise, and even RENAME the book into something that the author did not intend. Self publishing has, in many ways, gained more respect over the last few years, and on a personal level, is really the most rewarding way for a writer to see the product of their labors. I wrote a book last year and had it published; while not perfect, and I'd like to make changes in the future should it be re-printed, I take a lot of joy in seeing it on a few bookshelves. Promoting the book was the hard part, because, essentially, I had NO promotion. I didn't print many copies, but sent some copies out for reviewers via discussion boards and the like. Many copies I was obligated to give out to friends and family, too... I was discouraged that many reviewers did not bother to even consider it for review due to the small number of copies printed, but then again, the handful of reviews I DID receive made it all worth it. (It is with some humor and amusement that I can say that my book ranked 2,300,000th place on Amazon's bestseller list last month! I didn't know the list went that high...) I think Wil will have a MUCH easier time than I, as he is a celebrity (yes, Wil, you are -- don't deny it), and the curiousity factor for his book from such a devoted and widespread fan base is going to be inevidably high. But my favorite thing about publishing is, when it's over, I'll never have to ask myself "What if...?" Acknowledged or ignored, richer or poorer, a wrote a bloody book, and did what I could to make it more than just a flimsy manuscript gathering dust atop a shelf... Posted by: Adam at March 2, 2003 11:40 PMCan you put some of your drawings on your site, and if you don't have any draw some now and do it!!!! Posted by: dave at March 3, 2003 04:52 AMI can't believe I just read all those comments. THIS is what happens when you don't post new stuff over the weekend. Two notes on earlier comments: 1. Calling William Shatner "The Shat Man" is six thousand one hundred and eighty-two per cent WRONG and nobody should do it EVER; 2.
