my favorite day of the week
Remember your favorite day of the week when you were a kid? For some, it was Friday, because that was the end of school for the week. Others chose Saturday, because it brought a seemingly endless parade of morning cartoons. In my entire childhood, I never once met someone who had any of the remaining five days as their favorite . . . but I'm sure there was some egghead who couldn't wait for Monday to roll around so he could get around to screwing up the curve for the rest of us in school.
Saturdays were always my favorite, because of the cartoons, unless it was a Friday that my brother and sister and I were spending with Aunt Val -- that meant sugar cereal,
Love Boat, and Fantasy Island.. Many have pointed out that those shows were on Saturday, not Friday. I blame my memory lapse on the secondhand smoke that always billowed out of my parent's den on . . . Fridays? Saturdays? I don't remember. Now I need to eat some chips.
So it remained until just a few months ago, when Wednesdays became my favorite day of the week . . . because Wednesday is Spend The Day With My Wife Day.
I love it that we set a day aside for each other each week. I love it even more that we both have jobs that allow us to it!
We always make the most of our day together, too. We've been to the Huntington Library, on long hikes up to Henninger Flats, and down to the beach. We've just hung out at home and cleaned the house together, or walked the dogs around the neighborhood.
Today, we had breakfast together, and caught the first showing of Pieces of April over at the Laemmle near Lake. It's a truly wonderful movie, and I hope that it's a breakout for Katie Holmes. She's such a fantastic actor, she should be in more serious movies. I hope Hollywood is paying attention to her.
After the movie, we had time for coffee and some gingerbread before we picked up Nolan from school, who proudly showed us that he scored 104% on his math test.

=^). Favorite days of the week rock!
I always liked Saturdays as a kid too...Looney Tunes.
As an adult I like Thursdays, knowing that after one more day, I get two days for me. Typically Fridays are slow allowing for a relaxing way to finish up the week's work. :)
I love your life, Wil! Your family is great, and obviously your kids are geniuses.
great one wil...i used to love saturday morning cartoons too..can't think of any kids that didn't...Thundar the barbarian was a fav. anyone here remember 'rocket robin hood'? wow...or am i dating myself...another classic was the wizard of oz cartoon...it was kinda like rocky and bullwinkle...all f*cked up animation, kinda abstract..but this one had dorothy, tin man and the rest of the gang..very bizzare...
my fav day of the week has got to be Friday..
Friday is (obviously) the end the week, and a chance to unwind..
but more important than that..
on Fridays, my wife and baby girl go to my in-laws house and chill out with them for the night...
i guess for some that might be hell..but for me it's awesome..
my father in law and my brother in law are two of my best friends, and my mother in law is the best cook, bar none...well...as long as you like spicy southern indian curry (the wife's family is from there)
anyhow, friday night is a chance for me to kick back, watch the inlaws play with my daughter, have a great meal, and the occasional cigarette..
man, i love fridays..
My favorite day of the week was any day but Sunday... Sunday meant the Weekend was ending and there was some creepy feeling to late Sunday afternoon.
But on an entirely unrelated note, I have to say that the fact that you and your wife reserve one day a week together is one of the sweetest, most romantic things I've ever heard. Maybe it's because I'm in a weird mood and am easily effected, but I teared up.
wow. I'm too young to remember most of those cartoons. I was raised on Ninja turtles. Oh yeah. Donatello was the best (geeks rule :D).
Friday was the best. weekends never seemed to live up their full expectations. on Saturdays it was just cartoons...and....boredom most weeks. and Sundays it was church. bleh...well, I got to doodle a lot in church. but Friday was where it was at. it was the -expectation- of the weekend to come that was so grand.
Days of the week are strange. Sometimes the middle of the weeks feels like weekends. Depending on your relationships or hobbies it is very easy to forget those time labels. It seems like you may have had way to much fun, for a weekday. Shame on you.
Mondays, back when Cosell was God and the NFL wasn't boring.
i used to love saturdays too. that was back in the day they actually had saturday morning cartoons. you don't see many of them anymore. sad thing. my favorite day of the week these days is wednesday because that's my only day off. i need a new job. *blah!*
Good God, you guys are just so saccharine! You remind me of my sister and her husband. One night I was over at their place, and her husband walked in the door, my sister goes "Hey cutie!" Bro-in-law goes "Hey sweetie!" Sis goes "OMG you're hot will you MARRY ME?!" Bro-in-law goes "We're already married you silly goof!" Sis goes "YAY!"
I almost barfed.
But yay for you guys. Never lose that! ;D
Eh - maybe I am just completely unaware of the scoring system in american schools, but 104% on a math test, is that a joke?
Ahem. I like Mondays.
You callin' me an egghead, Wheaton?
Well, I am an egghead.
Kudos to you for making time for the important things in life. I hope you two always have a life that allows you to take time out to enjoy eachother. That's really cool.
When I was a kid, Saturday's were always my favorite. Now, I think it's harder to narrow it down. Sundays are great, because there is no school, and no work. So, Sunday is family day. Tuesday's are great, because we sometimes have family movie night if there is a decent movie out. Thursday's are great, because it's our date night. No kids, just hubby and me. Although, today we had an awesome Wednesday! It was the first day in a couple weeks that none of us were too sick to enjoy the day. We actually went into town and had some fun for a change!
Did you feel that?!
sometime, shortly after 8:20 pm
millions of "wilwheaton.net" websters
let out a large "Aaaaaaahhhhhh isn't that sweet!"
maybe the rain drowned it out up thar in
later Wil, will tell us about "Wednesday Night!"
(or maybe not...)
I thought it was very cool. Reminds me of my schedule, though (except that since you get the same schedule every week, you probably have much less difficulty actually knowing what day of the week it is).
I find it mildly ironic that you took a shot at those of us who threw the curve (for what it's worth, the only two times I know I *really* threw the curve, the professor threw my grade OUT of the curve for everyone else's sake; that one A in a class of C- finals will really mess things up) at the beginning of your email, and then was all proud of Nolan for the 104% (which is mathematically possible with extra credit -- my favorite question ever was "what color was my tie on Tuesday, the blah-blah-blah of April", because that was the day only two people showed up -- for the guy who was curious).
Not that anyone matters, but my favorite day of the week is usually Wednesday or Thursday. Cool movies often open on such days now, Disneyland isn't crowded, I generally have the day off, and that's when my paycheck comes in the mail. ^_^
if you like gingerbread (the actual cake-like stuff), definitely try the gingerbread from whole foods. a-maz-ing.
Just for my own edification, did the word 'actress' become uncouth when I wasn't paying attention? I have seen the word 'actor' used with women more frequently in the media over the past couple of years.
I love Fridays RIGHT after work. Longest possible time until the other people come back to work. Not that I'm off or anything. Just that no one else is here generally. I hate people. Well stupid people.
Anyway... I'm happy that you and the Mrs. are still so in love. Just think no matter how many bitter lonely gotta say shit about you to feel like they have meaning in their lives assholes out there try to take shots at you and your wife... they'll never be able to take that sparky zing away. *grin*
So by being so in love you've not let the terrorist’s... er I mean stupid fucking petty immature assholes win.
Yeah, I need more sugar in the mornings, don't cha think.
Once again, you have proven just how cool you are, Wil! :D
My favorite day of the week is Thursday. Why? Well, for two solid reasons. The first has to do with the root of the word itself: "Thursday". The name for this day came from those crazy Norse pagans. You see, Thursday is "Thor's Day". No fooling.
The other, and more important, reason why I love Thursday is because that was the day that "The Simpsons" used to be on when they first started airing and I first starting falling in love with them.
Ah, the memories...
My favorite as a kid was always Thursday because way back in the early 90's that's when the Simpsons were on and my mom always worked Thursday night; so we could watch the Simpsons without my mom complaining about it (she hates the Simpsons).
I have to say, WTF to two things:
104% on a MATH TEST? Obviously the teacher needs to go back to remedial math. Kind of like a coach saying his team gave 110%. Morons.
Katie Holmes a fantastic actor? Ok she is hot and not an annoying actor, I'll even give you that she is improving, but she has like two expressions. Maybe I'll think differently when I see the "...April" movie.
It's great that you get to spend the day with your wife and you both enjoy it!
Nothing like Hump day.
It's the middle of the week, you still revel in the memories of the former weekend and can look forward to the next weekend all in the same day. It's also the day that I get a chance to eat at Noah's Begals (Lake). EGG MIT BABY, EGG MIT.
Little problem with your post Wil... Love Boat and Fantasy Island were on Saturday nights. Friday night was for Dukes of Hazard.
Thursdays are my favorite. And no, I'm not trying to be difficult and it has nothing to do with "must see TV" or other nonsense.
Mondays are the first day of my work week, there is an air of excitement as to what the new week will bring.
Tuesdays are the worst day of the week, because they lack the excitement of mondays, yest you still have three whole days until the weekend.
Wednesdays are not so bad, because it's the middle of the week. You can begin to see that light at the end of the tunnel.
Thursdays rule supreme because you only have ONE day until the weekend. The end is almost there. But you have a whole extra day to get other things done so there is no pressure. You can make all the plans and feel productive, but not have to kill yourself to get things done.
Fridays are fine, but there is a moral obligation to go out, and after a hard work week you're tired and cranky. That is if you got the week ending projects done that you were supposed to finish up. These projects always take more time then you thought they would and always end up causing you to rush at the last minute to get them done so you don't have to a) miss the going out on friday night part and b) don't have to go into work over the weekend.
Saturdays and Sundays are never as much fun as you thought. You are busy doing all the things that you never had time to do during the week.
:: 104% on a MATH TEST? ::
Extra credit question.
hey wil, First and foremost...WELL DONE NOLAN!!! thats a great score, no matter how he got it, or whether its a correct score and whatnot...its a great score!! congratulations to him!
secondly, i too love thursdays...That is the start of my weekend. i am a student you see, and all my classes finish on thursdays, so i get to relax all afternoon, do nothing in the evening then go to bed real late, coz i have nothing to do the next day! YEY!
Lastly...I love that you set aside a specific day for eachother....i don't enough people do that...they should. Even, as you say, if you don't do anything special...ie tidy the house...you are just being together and that is all that matters!! Never lose that! *as if you need me to tell you!!!!!!!*
mondays my fave days! nothing wrong with that! Cos i have a weekend job, mondays mean no more work for another five days! woo!
I was the kid--the one that screwed up the curve--that loved Mondays. Oddly, I also dreaded Mondays because they were the day I usually got beat up by the school bullies--smart, short and thin are a recipe for disaster.
Thank providence for college.
Growing up in Belgium, I had half-days on Wednesdays, so Wednesdays were actually my favorite day of the week - school in the morning so I got to see all my friends and then an afternoon of playing and cartoons. All the cool cartoons were on on Wednesday afternoons.
These days, I'm back to being a Saturday girl 'cos that's the day I get to spend the most time with my son and I don't have to worry about getting up early and there's still Sunday to look forward to.
I am jealous of your flexible schedules. For me & my husband, during the week, after 6 is our chance to spend time together. Of all 7, Friday is definitely my favorite day. Adam ususally comes home earlier and we do something fun together. It's also nice to know that we have Saturday and Sunday to look forward to as well. Your idea is a good one, out of everything in life, being with those you love is most important. Savor every minute.
you and anne have got something special. i hope that you two hang on to that forever.
and nolan... good on you, boy! 104% rocks.
Saturday was the day I longed for before I got a job and had a child. The one day I could sleep in when I was in school.
Good job that Nolan did great on the test.
BTW Tukla--I realized that it was extra-credit. But if you are given 21 questions to answer with 1 being extra credit, then answering all of them correctly still means you answered 100% right, not 105%. You can't answer more questions than you are given.
I totally agree with you Wil! I think Katie Holmes is a great actress. She exhibits this immense beauty that's rarely seen in Hollywood. I can't wait to see the new movie!
Wednesdays do, indeed, rule. "Ed", NBC, 8 PM Eastern. TV doesn't get any better. And for the other good stuff Wil wrote about.
Wow! I remember getting VERY excited over the double feature Love Boat/Fantasy Island EVERY Saturday night. I usually made popcorn & shared it with mom & dad. Honest...I LOVED those 2 shows!
Cool that you make time for the wife at least 1 day out of the week. Although, I'm not sure if something like that could ever compete with the mystical powers of Mr. Roark (Ricardo Montalban) or the EVER beautiful/but way too jittery Julie McCoy (Lauren Tewes).
wow I've never talked to a real movie star before
like great man !!! yahhhh love your blog
What is it that Anne does again?
I am a fairly new reader and this is my first time commenting on your blog. I figured you have enough comments to read so I don't add to your pile unless I really have something I'd like to say. ; )
Katie Holmes is actually from a suburb of Toledo, Ohio which is where I live. She does seem like a very talented actress and I hope she continues to do well out there.
As for favorite days of the week I'd have to say Friday is mine. There is something so great about knowing I have two free days ahead to play! (...and do house work but that thought is usually blocked out.) Monday's are by far my worst day of the week. Working or not.
Thanks for sharing your life stories. I look forward to reading them.
My friends and I used to wonder if Tuesday really existed....
If you work on the assumption that weekends do exist and then define every other of the week based on it's relationship to the weekend, what the heck is Tuesday for?
Monday is the day right after the weekend - back to work, school, what have you. Maybe not a favorite day, but a day nonetheless as defined by you knowing that the weekend just ended.
Wednesday is hump day. It's only called hump day because of it's relationship to the weekend.
Thursday. All you can think about is Friday.
Friday. The weekend starts tonight!
Tuesday. What the heck is it for?
Pieces of April was really an awesome movie. Hopefully it'll do well enough to draw attention to the fact that story supercedes budget. And it looks pretty sweet for being shot for 300k on digital.
Peter Hedges is a total badass. He's the coolest actor cum writer I know of...
I mean, er...
Another Egghead that loved Mondays. REPRESENT! :)
Ever since I joined Equity monday has become my favorite day as its usually the mandatory day off on a production.
My fav day as a kid had to be Saturdays because of the cartoons. Cartoons rock.
Now it would have to be Mondays. I support sales people and I think they are allergic to working on a Monday. So that make Monday, Movie Monday. The day I get to screw off and send my calls to voicemail and go see a flick.
i'm with the Thursday folks. it's got that pre-fun excitment in the air. of course i'm the one who always thought christmas eve was better than christmas.
Few people could beat my t-storm experience. And I wouldn't want to be them...
I grew up less than 1 km from an 800' transmission tower atop a 200' drumlin (glacial hill), in southern Ontario, in Canada. Where it averages a thunderstorm every 3 days all summer long.
I then worked in the building attached at the base of that tower for 15 years.
I've learned a lot about how lightning behaves and the effect it has on things since I've been inside lightning strikes on the ground, reach out and touch-it close to ball lightning (did a number on the house bouncing through it)... on and on... where I live now in Ottawa, Ontario it freaks my neighbours out when a storm draws near. 8)
Speaking of which, just one month ago, it effectively thundered non-stop for 6 hours over night... in the middle of October! There were lots of sleepy people the next morning.
Ya gotta enjoy it Wil... time lapse still photos are a blast. Revel in the power and display. Park your car beside a steel tower... 8)))
Everything good that has ever happened to me has always happened on a Tuesday for some reason...
Tuesday is my favorite. :)
Dude, your Wednesdays sound awesome, but I don't know if you can count it as breaking from the pack much if your Wednesdays are the equivalent of other people's Saturdays, in terms of not having to deal with all the stuff that gunks up most of the week. (Lucky dog.)
Very excellent, I have learnt lot of things from you.
