Ooo, now this is better (for you, Wil) than even being included in a new Trek... that'd just be going backwards to TVsWilWheaton, not Wil Wheaton, Geek and Author. I've always had a TON more respect and awe for authors than for actors anyway.

This is what you've been working for here, what you've been building since you started blogging and writing books, you've got serious backing.

And DUDE, way to go getting in at freaking O'Reilly! They're my favorite technical publisher. I used to work as webmaster/sysadmin/coder for a Competing Technical Publisher back in '94-'97, got free books from Said Publisher, but went out and paid full price for my extensive collection of O'Reilly titles. They are the bomb!

So if you do a book tour in Indianapolis, I'll be there standing in line to buy Just A Geek, probably even if I already bought it online or whatever. I know some people who'd like a copy too.

Being published by O'Reilly automatically gives you MAJOR geek street cred points, Wil. Of course, obviously Tim O'Reilly knows a good thing when he sees one!

I still think it would be awesome if your book tour took you to the Tattered Cover in Denver (either Cherry Creek or LoDo, doesn't matter)...but if O'Reilly decides to send you to Softpro Technical Books in Centennial or Boulder, that'll be OK, too. They do have free Wi-Fi! :-)

Anyway, I think fellow Coloradan Eric Cartman would best express my sentiments this way: "Sweet, dude! Kick ass! Yes! YES!" And then he'd probably start doing the German Dance....

I just got my signed copy yesterday in the mail. I was under the impression for the last few weeks that my wife swiped it to "hide" it until christmas so I was a little off kilter when I saw the envelope.
I decided to start reading it last night, since it was 11pm I figured one or two stories then off to bed.
Next thing I know I was finished and reading spongebob for the third time laughing my ass off.
I then rushed off to bed since it was midnight and 5:30 am comes fast.

It was good seeing you at Loscon. During the reading you did there, it occurred to me that you could sell recordings of your books that you read yourself. The only reader that I can think of that I would rate better than you is Harlan Ellison. If you haven't heard him read, check out some of the books he's recorded. But you are a close second, at least when it comes to reading your own works. I would buy them if you recorded them. You add so much to the written word when you read.

This may be too far down for anyone to read, but GREAT Slurm reference.

Wil, someone asked above if buying directly from you would net you more money than buying from the store, but I'm curious, would buying from the store help you in the bestseller rankings? And if so, which would you prefer?

I was thinking, if a lot of us buy the book online the day it comes out, maybe we could get you onto Amazon’s “Movers and Shakers” list or Barnes & Noble’s “Top 100” list, which would bring your book to the attention of a wider audience. Since it’s gotten great reviews in both places already (although I only see 2 reviews at Barnes & Noble, you people who’ve already gotten a copy need to get busy over there) I think that could get even more people to buy it. So it would be great if you could put up a message and send out an alert as soon as it becomes available to buy on those websites.

Also, how does the book tour scheduling work? Does the publisher just decide where they are sending you, or can bookstores put in a request? If bookstores’ requests influence the schedule, then we should all contact our local bookstore’s management and ask that they request Wil Wheaton come do a signing in their store.

I was lucky enough to wrangle myself a copy of dancing barefoot from Amazon when they still had stock and I read the entire book in about 45 minutes straight. Gotta tell ya, man-- I've read your blogs for tons of time - and ordered Dancing as soon as I heard about it (loved it, btw)...

I posted earlier - for the first time. And now this is my second.

I've been back like 9 times today, keeping up on the comments-- and it just amazes me that so many comments and good wishes are flowing your way.

And so many by those like me who usually just read and relish in the antics of the Wheaton clan-- but now all those like me are *driven* to post comments.

Good job Wil. Best of luck to you now that you have a big-time publisher behind you. Can you tell us anything about this technical book you want to write? Will you focus on blogging tools/php etc? I hope you intend to talk about W3C guidelines and why anything proprietary sucks. We need more writers to shed light on modern web design practises.

This transition you are going through is, in a way, like what your character, Wesley, went through. Wesley was a great Starfleet cadet, just as you are a great actor, but both of you were meant for something better. Wesley went off with the Traveler, and you? You became a fantastic parent. Oh, and the book deal is cool, too :).

I had the misfortune of working at O'Reilly.

Some authors have been treated not-so-well, however because of your following and who you are, you'll proably be treated fine. If your books don't sell well enough by Tim's standards, don't be surprised if you get some BS explanation from someone about why some of their promises have changed.

I hope your experiences with O'Reilly are much better than that of too many people I know. (There are people who have very good experiences with O'Reilly...unfortunately that's far from most.) If you do some research, you'll find that some successful authors have left O'Reilly for other publishers. How well you get treated also depends on your editor, and his clout, largly based on how well his books sell overall.

I have just rung O’Rielly’s here in the UK about buying a copy of “Dancing Barefoot”. The lady who answered told me that “they have been warned about people ringing up about this book” (I was the second person to ring – wanted to be the first but somebody else’s fingers must work better than mine).
The list that lets them know the details (including dates a book will be available in the UK) is not due until next week, so she took my number and will call me as soon as she knows something.
She went on to tell me that, according to her information, the book won’t be available until mid January in the US. so it looks like all your fans over there won’t get a copy until AFTER CHRISTMAS.

Very cool news.....major congratulations.....:-)....

I am so excited! I came upon this site late in the game & missed out on a copy of Dancing Barefoot. Now I'll be able to get it & I'll soon be able to pick up a copy of Just A Geek! And I might even pick up the web design book, although I am already a web designer.

Congratulations on the book deal. Many of us in the trenches have been working towards or desiring of such a thing for a very long time, and we basically know it's never going to happen. It's always nice to hear someone we "know" hit the jackpot.

I hope you know that you got the deal because a) you're talented, and b) you have a large following that sold a lot of copies of your book. Your book's great -- I do love it -- but always remember the fact that you're a celebrity already helped in your success.

This isn't criticism, it's just something to keep in mind as you embark on your journey. Don't take anything for granted... and you bet your booty I'll be reading "Just a Geek."

I have started an initiative on My Blog, and considering your news, Maybe you could celebrate by donating some of your books to kids who otherwise might not get the chance to read them. Congratulations, at 442 post level, seems pointless. But, then I've never been one to pay attention to the point of anything. Life is strange and weird (and living in Hollywood -or close to it -makes life even weirder), but you've taken that life and made some sort bizarre sense to it. Get it on Amazon or Borders (I know, evil book empire, but I work for them part-time, and well, they're not that evil. Unlike Barnes and Noble. Len Ridggio is Satan, or Santa) and I'll buy it.

Congratulations, Wil! I was thisclose to crying (at work, no less) when I read your wonderful news! Even though you don't know me, I feel I sorta know you, and well, I guess I'll say that I'm proud, and a very proud owner of Dancing Barefoot (not signed, though--sniff!).

I asked the Huntington Beach Library to carry your book a few weeks ago - the lady at the reference desk (who also handles acquisitions) told me it was unavailable. I went back today and told her the good news - she's a big fan of yours btw! So, if you're ever down in Surf City - your book will be on the shelves...er., actually it won't be, because it will always be checked out! Cheers Will!

I am pretty much a newcomer too WWdN but got hooked in November when I was out sick for a couple of days from work and decided to read all of the archives back to back!! I hesitate to bring up the fact that I had a HUGE crush on Wesley because, after reading the blog, I know that is not who you see yourself as any longer, even while you struggle with others seeing you that way. But my Wesley-Crusher fandom has brought me to Wil-Wheaton fandom and, for that, I am glad because Wil Wheaton is SOOOO MUCH COOLER! :-) You are so honest and funny and real and normal and zany that I love reading about you and your life and your love for your family. I am only a geek-by-association (my boyfriend reads slashdot 1,000 times a friggin' day!!), but I get enough from him to get the humor in the Linux comments, etc. and to learn a little more to impress him with. Haha! The point of all of this babbling is that you and your family deserve this wonderful news and I am so happy for all of you!!! I feel like I know you personally after reading your stuff, and I couldn't be prouder!! You are a fantastic writer and have worked your ASS off to make it over some major humps!! I just saw Toy Soldiers (my favorite Wil Wheaton movie) for the umpteenth time the other day and thought to myself, "Wil Wheaton is such a good actor, I wonder what he's been up to." Now I know! As for the Hooters waitress, she don't know jack! You rock as an actor and I know you'll blow us all away with your books.
