the world needs heroes on patrol

Calling all Teen Titans fans!

This weekend's new episode "Winner Take All," airs at 9PM on Cartoon Network, and features everyone's favorite underwater-fish-talking-guy, Aqualad!

Speedy vs. Aqualad -- found at Comics Continuum dot Com.

I can't recall if I wrote about this, or if I just talked about it with some friends, but I am incredibly proud of the work I've done on Teen Titans, and I am so grateful that I get to be part of it.

The last time I was over there, when I was walking from my car to the studio, someone called out to me, "Hey! Aqualad!" and the biggest smile filled my face. It was quite a contrast: when someone calls out, "Hey! Wesley!" I sort of look at the ground and wish I was invisible . . . but when this unseen person called me "Aqualad" my heart jumped, and I looked around to see who said it.

You know, I could probably sell my soul and work all the time on shitty low budget genre films that nobody cares about. I could probably make a decent living doing it, too. I mean, you'd tune in if I was on some late night erotic thriller, right?

Wait. Don't answer that. As a matter of fact, let's forget I ever brought that up. (Although . . . it would be nice to see Lisa Boyle up close and in person.)

Uhhh . . . let's forget I said that, too, okay?

The point is, I care about the work that I do, and if I can help it, I don't want to contribute to the stinking pile of garbage that passes for popular entertainment these days.

When I get to be part of something that's consistently good, something that I can be totally proud of, and heartily endorse, I feel like I'm doing something worthwhile. It's just awesome that I can tell people to watch Teen Titans without any of the standard disclaimers that have accompanied just about everything I've acted in over the last few years.

Now, if I can just get Las Vegas, The West Wing, Arrested Development, and Family Guy to give me a chance . . .

Seriously. Tune in on Saturday. Teen Titans is superfuckingcool.

Wil Wheaton is tickled pink, or more appropriately perhaps blue-green, to be voicing Aqualad for the Teen Titans cartoon, and reminds us he's "on" again this Saturday in a Dwayne McDuffie-written episode. [Read More]

Yeah! First Post!

Wil, love you on the Teen Titans. I SO want to see Aqualad full time, though that would mean more work for you!

Keep up the great work!

SWEET!

Saturday Morning here I come.
I'll be in my underoos with a huge bowl of Capn Crunch in front of the boob tube!

Posted by: redrhino at March 4, 2004 09:39 AM

Wouldn't it be irony if Wil were on The West Wing, not as himself, and the President of the United States turns to his character and says:

"I could swear I've seen you somewhere before... Didn't you used to be an actor?"

:)

Still a teen after so many years...very youthful, dude, very youthful. I've watched a bit of teen titans, and enjoyed it, but now that I know you're on it, I'll make sure to watch even more.

Hey Wil, didn't you play a werewolf or something on Amazing Stories...I vaguely remember it. Is there anywhere we can buy that episode?

Always a fan,

Jeff

Wil, cant wait to watch teen titans not a bad show at all and its something i can watch with my kids, my son loves that show!!! thanks!!

Congrats Wil! I missed your first TT appearance but I'll be sure to tune in for this one. I watch with my daughter sometimes because she likes it. Personally, I don't like TT's "Japanimation" approach. It's also nowhere near as well-written as Justice League (a show you'd be great on, Wil). I love how JL is actually dealing with very relevant issues right now, such as the curbing of our civil rights or how our leaders need to take repsonsibiliy for their actions. It's a cartoon, but just like The Simpsons it's one of the best (and most subversive) shows on TV today.

Anyhow, I hope the work on TT leads to parts on Justice League, The Simpsons, West Wing (a show that's lost its touch but still pretty good) and any Cinemax late night features your little heart desires!

Posted by: Shaun at March 4, 2004 09:44 AM

I only just recently found your blog, and lo, you post about something I love. :) The quality of storytelling, voice-acting and animation on Teen Titans has made me a fan; it's one of the few shows I watch regularly (along with my five year old, natch). I thought you did a fantastic job as Aqualad in "Deep Six," and I really like the character, so I was jazzed to see Aqualad in the preview for the next episode. My son and I will definitely be watching!

Posted by: Mahoney at March 4, 2004 09:44 AM

What I like the best is that in the description of the episodes, they had to spell out who Mike Erwin was, but not Wil.

Everyone KNOWS who Wil Wheaton is!

Posted by: Bill Fuller at March 4, 2004 09:45 AM

Can't wait. I'm very happy for you,Wil.
However, Redrhino in underoos? Gives me the shivers.

You know Donna has been needing a new love interest on The West Wing...

Posted by: Sean Wardwell at March 4, 2004 09:50 AM

It's great there's another Aqualad episode of TT; my friends and I really dig the show. You being on there makes it just that much keener.

Posted by: Barb at March 4, 2004 09:59 AM

Someone is going to have to tape that for me. They will all be pestered for the rest of the day until they promise to do so. Aqualad is such a hottie.

And Mr. Wardwell, there's a problem with the idea of Wil playing Donna's love interest.
2/3 of the males the lovely Miss Moss falls for are Republicans. I'm sure Wil is versatile, but I just have a hard time seeing that.

Posted by: Kate Perkins at March 4, 2004 10:04 AM

My friends and I loved you on TT. We're total TT nuts and we were so happy to get a picture with you at LosCon last year. I can't wait for this weekend's episode! Yay! =)

Posted by: AJ at March 4, 2004 10:04 AM

Voice acting has "late night erotic thriller" beat, hands down. Didn't the whole ST:TNG cast do the voices for "Gargoyles"?

You'll know you've made it when they ask you to do a voice on the Simpsons.

Posted by: Julie at March 4, 2004 10:05 AM

Seems like you realy miss the acting gig dude!
Now c'mon, Wesley isn't something to be ashamed of! I never could understand the hatred some people had for the character of Wesley. He seemed like a cool super genius kid to me. Now, Riker could be annoying sometime. But, it was Star Trek. It's all good. Well, except that stupid 'Enterprise' theme song.

Posted by: Tony at March 4, 2004 10:13 AM

Yay for you, Wil! You know I'll be watching...just me, my bowl of cereal, my dog and my drunkass friends who passed out on the couch the night before...we'll all be watching.

Posted by: Abby at March 4, 2004 10:14 AM

Hmmm...wonder if the motel the spouse and I are staying in has Cartoon Network???

"Honey, I'll come to bed in a little while; Aqualad is on!"

Posted by: Roberta at March 4, 2004 10:32 AM

Holy Crap... are they still making new family guy episodes?

Cheers,

Posted by: patrick at March 4, 2004 10:37 AM

That's what I wanted to ask! I didn't think they were making new Family Guy eps...

As much as I'd love to watch Teen Titans, Wil, it's not available up here in CanaDUH... sadly we don't get ANY good cartoon content... grrr!

Posted by: Ryan Waddell at March 4, 2004 10:53 AM

Yep Family Guy is coming back. Isn't Teen Titans on at night, not with Saturday morning cartoons?

Posted by: Evan at March 4, 2004 11:01 AM

Actually, we do get Teen Titans in Canada. It's on YTV at I think 10:30 AT on Saturdays. Awesome show; I had no idea Wil was the voice of Aqualad, so that makes the show even cooler.

Posted by: Liz at March 4, 2004 11:03 AM

Hey Wil! How about a NSFW warning on those! That will teach me not to blindly click on links at work!

Posted by: jordan at March 4, 2004 11:17 AM

As a fan of the original Teen Titan comic book, I've tried to watch the show. So far, I haven't been able to make it through the opening theme song. It makes my teeth itch (and not in a good way). Having said the above, I'll break out my "Clockwork Orange" TV viewing apparatus, and force myself through it, just to hear 'Uncle Willie' do Aqualad.

For Wil, Break a leg on the Audition guy!!!! Knowing what a great dad you are in real life, I'd love to see you do it on TV.

Posted by: Fred at March 4, 2004 11:34 AM

a family guy ep with will wheaton would be incredibly awesome. although sadly, they would prolly have you play wesley in a star trek joke.

lois - "Peter, I thought I told you to fix the lawn mower."

peter - "Don't worry honey. I got that Wesley Crusher to do it."

~ ~ pans over to ~ ~

will wheaton - "Bite me!"

Posted by: dante at March 4, 2004 11:35 AM

Hey, best of luck! I'd love to see you in something. Although - /I/ wish they'd read you for the "punk dad." The whole "had a different past" might resonate nicely in the background, and add an extra little bit of 'back of the brain' fun to the role.

An example - I LOVED seeing Billy Mumy in Babylon Five. He did an awesome job in the role, but it was always just that extra bit of fun watching it, just because we knew who he had also played in Lost in Space.

I think you could add exactly that little touch of fun, in the same way. And of course, what would make it work is the same thing that made it work for Mumy- you actually do have real acting chops (unlike some child stars that had to leave the acting biz when they grew up because they'd been cast solely for their 'cute factor').

In any case - hope you get the role! Break a leg, or whatever one says ;P

Any tips on landing VO gigs? Other than working for a company that uses VO talent, obviously.

Aren't they casting for McFarlane's new show right now? Also, with Family Guy coming back, they may not be able to get all of the old voice guys back. You should break into McFarlane's house and tie him up and refuse to let him go until he casts you. That's what Peter Griffin would do! Get in there!

I've been watching Teen Titans since it's premiere, and got even more enthused when I heard you were voicing Aqualad. It's a great show, and killer to see (or in this case, hear) you be a part of it! I agree with the other posts that want to see Aqualad on a more regular basis, working with the Titans. He's a great character and has teh r0x0rz voice actor behind him!

Titans, GO!

they've got Seth Green, but you know you could do better, Wil.

You know, my 4-year-old son has recently discovered Teen Titans, gleefully encouraged by my husband. I am *sure* that he'll be thrilled with this. He was talking about "the boy with the spider legs" on the way home from pre-school the other day...

Posted by: dia at March 4, 2004 02:39 PM

Heh, my little brother is a huge fan of your's (as am I), but I think he's even a bigger fan of Aqualad's (he never put two and two together to get you as the voice of Aqualand, by the way). I just called him and told him that Aqualad was going to be in the newest episode (and that you played him, lol) and I think he had a heart attack...

You just made one 12 year old boy really happy, Wil.

Nuh-uh! That's you??? I LOVE Teen Titans! Man, I knew I recognized the voice! Wicked!

It's definitely a wicked good show...I always rush home from work to watch it (I work Saturdays till 7 pm, so I make sure that my boss doesn't keep me overtime)

Rock on!

Good luck on the audition Wil!

There's just no denying it: the Teen Titan themesong kicks the crap out of the Justice League Themesong. Always has, always will.

Plus, the new Ninja Turtles show has no pizza jokes- someone's gotta take those on, right?

and TT has better animation than JL ever will.

Wil, I think it's really cool that you're on as Aqualad. He's got the hair. There's no messin' with that hair.

Posted by: Annalee at March 4, 2004 04:39 PM

I would kill to see you on an ep of Bliss, that terrible Oxygen/CBC softcore porn show, getting molested by two or three 40 year old Canadian women. But only because you'd rip on how stupid the whole ordeal was afterwards.

Posted by: elzie at March 4, 2004 04:51 PM

And no... I don't own a comic book store or weigh 300 pounds.

Wil on West Wing would rock! They need a new speech writer, now that Wil Bailey has gone to work for the VP ...

Setting Tivo for Teen Titans now ...

Posted by: Mary at March 4, 2004 05:38 PM

Wil, I wish you would not be so hard on yourself about your past role as Wesley. Almost every time you refer to "him" you are writing an appology either as the main thought, or as an afterthought. Ya know, S.T.N.G. is on SPIKE-TV as I type these words. I watched the previous episode but decided after your preformance (as Wesley) to forgo the second installment and write to you here. The sho I just watched was the episode where Wesley had returned to the Enterprise on vacation from the academy, and Wil Riker had brought back those trick game glasses from is shore leave on Risa. You did a fine job of carrying your role on that show. You have nothing to be ashamed of. Wesley Crusher was who the writers and the powers that be had him to be. Any young actor would have been faced with the same challenges and frustrations. Be at peace with Wesley. I for one happened to like the kid and looked forward to the episodes that centered on him. Later, Joel

Posted by: Joel Dunaway at March 4, 2004 05:47 PM

Wil,

I do not have any kids and I have never watched
Aqualad, but I will watch it Sat. night just to hear your voice. And if i ever see you on the street and I say "Hey, Wesley", you had better look up and smile...I mean it! "A couple of light years can't keep good friends apart."

I tried to watch "Teen Titans" once at my husband's urging, but I don't think I made it through the whole episode. I found the art annoying and the characters wildly unlike the recent (pre-shifting) comic run I had so enjoyed. My favorite Donna Troy was nowhere to be seen, replaced by a Starfire who was totally out of the character I knew.

However, since it's you, I will try and catch the episode this weekend. I'm glad you enjoyed doing it and are proud of your work.

Posted by: Shannon S at March 4, 2004 06:47 PM

I really wish I still had that "free" cable so I could actually watch/hear you in action.

Posted by: jessica at March 4, 2004 07:04 PM

I like Wesley.

When ST:TNG first started, I was very young (7 at most). And when I got older and Wesley showed up I thought, "Yay! A character I can sorta relate to!".

Oh, man, Saturday night just got good! Wil is going to be on Book of Days on PAX and "Teen Titans!" Whee hee!

You're great, though! I love the character! I saw the one where they first meet Aqualad as the Teen Titans are trying to figure out who or what they are up against under the ocean. (It's a race of sea creatures.) I loved that one! I'm going to have to pay closer attention!

Congratulations on getting to do something you love!

Posted by: Rhonda at March 5, 2004 01:38 AM

Wil, you're the ONLY good thing on that cartoon. It hurts me to watch any of it because it just rapes the characterization! It's like the "teeny titans" cartoon that the characters were mocked with in the Titans $ell Out issue.
Btw, it may interest you that I'm a moderator on a messageboard for the Teen Titans (the comic book) and the cartoon is sometimes discussed. We'd love to have you drop by if you feel like it. http://www.comicboards.com/teentitans
I'm glad you're excited about doing the voice. In the few minutes that I was able to stomach of the show, your voice was the most pleasant.

Why do they have Mike Irwin's picture on the website, but not yours?

Dorky cartoon network.

Posted by: Jesse at March 5, 2004 05:40 AM

"A little less conversation, a little more action please ..."

Of the shows you mentioned, that's the only one I watch. No time for any more. Caught your watching giving buddy Sean Astin get jacked on stiffy's. Weird character. I'd like to see you on Las Vegas. A character I can 'see in you' and that I would enjoy is a low rent confidence man. Shifty, always a big smile, everything's great as he cleans you out sort of guy . You're conning Josh Duhamel's character. We think you've gotten away with it until you catch the eye of Fast Eddy and you're left to scramble your way out of there with just the clothes on your back. (Of course you get away, so you can return again one day ...) And who really owns the fancy ass car you drove up in.

And Joel, I saw the ST:TNG episode on Spike was going to be the one with Robin/Ashley and had to watch it. Seeing it the first time brought me the moment when I first wanted to be Wesley Crusher. I mean, he got to kiss her. And not grandma kiss! She melts my ice cream. Oh man. I'm not so thrilled with Ashley Judd's current 'persona'. It's a little to hard edged for me. But back in those days, when she had such a high 'cute' factor, she had my attention. (Does my wife come here and read this?)

You know, it just occurred to me. Wesley Crusher could appear on the current Star Trek Enterprise. He's obviously evolved to some point where he can navigate time, since he manipulated time at the end of the TNG series. A really cool story line could be Wesley showing up on Archer's turf some a hidden agenda. Could be part of the temporal cold war? Does he have an alliance with someone? He is he friend of foe? I'd love to see Wesley Crusher turned into a bad guy. Or maybe a conflicted guy, doing bad things, who later turns back to the good side of the force (oh , sorry, wrong universe). What do you say guys? Should we start emailing the powers that be?

And Wil, have you ever considered script writing? I think I'd enjoy the kinds of shows you'd write. If you get a pilot, and it gets picked up, maybe you could work you way into writing an episode. Hell, even Mike Farrel wrote for MASH eventually. Just a thought.

This post got too long. Must be hopped on bubble gum or something.

Posted by: anc at March 5, 2004 06:16 AM

Yes, I definitely think Enterprise could utilize the Wes character in creative ways, just so long as he doesn't Travel in at the last minute to save the universe. If they keep it subtle and simple, it should work great.

I just Webb'd into my tivo (at home) from work, and set it to record Teen Titans this weekend (Never heard of it before your blog), and a bonus another station is showing the "Deep Six" episode this weekend as well.

Brak a leg w/ that audition.

I waw watching The Surreal Life and Rob van Winklie, AKA Vanilla Ice, was moaning about how he hates his past as Vanilla because it was such a sham and not the "real him". But I started thinking, you know, as hard as it may be to reflect on a past that wasn't all you might want it to be, you have to appreciate that it got you to where you are now. Without his Ice Ice Babyism, Rob wouldn't be able to have the career he has now.

It's not TOTALLY comperable, but...Wil! You don't even know how amazing you are, I sometimes think. Not to be a gushyfan, but you (and through you, Wesley) have brought total smileism to hundreds of thousands of people. And because of what you've done, you do what you do!

I know it may be rough, but next time, even if just the next time, when someone yells out "Hey Wesley!", hold your head up high and feel PROUD. You deserve it!

Hey, Wil! I was watching Teen Titans this morning on Channel 5 KTLA, "the WB," and they reran the Aqualad episode of Aqualad and the Teen Titans versus Triton and the clones. Seeing it a second time it is so obvious it is you. I don't see how I could have not noticed before. They need to add Aqualad to the show more often!

I have my TiVO set!!

I have only seen teen titans twice. This morning was one of them. And what did they show, yep, the Aqualad episode. The same one I saw the 1st time I saw Teen Titans.

Unfortunally I don't have cable, so can't watch it on Cartoon Network, but I can watch it on WB26 out of Dayton on Saturday mornings.

Hope to see it again soon!

Wil,

I just watched Teen Titans (Sat. night). I was eagerly looking for Aqualad but all I saw was
some kid named Robin and another named Speedy.
Was either one of them you? I just realized you
had sent me a smiley face :) on a previous post--
thanks so much; you made my day.

Your friend,

Freeman :)

Watching it right now on CN at 1am in the morning. LOL ... it is a pretty fun show I like the obvious anime nods. Also, like the soundtrack and Wil your voice work is just as I thought it should be. Wondering if you perform/interact with other talent from the show while working or if you all do your lines at different times. Hmmmm, I think you could expand your FAQ to include this body of your work.

In any event, it's going to be a serious downgrade when I hop over to Shazam on TV land after the episode. :)

Just watched the episode. It was awesome, and you did a great job as Aqualad (just like you did with the episode introducing Aqualad).

Do you tape with everyone there, or are the voice bits done seperately?

Aqualad rocks. The cartoon network showed the first episode Aqualad appeared in on Friday and the new one on Saturday. So I have to ask. Why did Aqualad get a second "honorary" member thingee? He got one in the first episode. Do they carry these things around or something kind of like light up pens at trade shows?

I was disappointed he didn't get to say more, but he did kick much butt. I hope we get to see more of Aqualad cause you kick serious butt and seeing Raven with heart shaped eyes over anyone is a riot.

Ahh, Wil... I was really sorry to see Aqualad got all of ONE line (though it was a good one!) on last Saturday's episode. I hope they'll bring you back to do more, A LOT more, in the near future. I was really hoping you'd kick Speedy's punk ass.

I'm still not a TT fan. The show seems to be geared towards the young'uns (like my daughter), while Justice League is really a "grown-ups" show. Actually, it's a fanboy's wet dream, but let's not get into that... Maybe I'll warm up to TT it if they give Aqualad something more to do.

The thing that really bugged me (aside from everyone's heads and bodies changing shapes depending on their emotional state), is how none of the heroes for even a minute questioned why they'd be suddenly transported to a different dimension. I mean didn't Captain Picard teach you anything, Aqualad?? Sorry... I'll stop going all Comic Book Guy on you now. I hope you land that pilot!

Wil, you're the best. I'm not a TT fan, and I don't know if I'd tune into a late-night erotic thriller (well, I might, so I figured I'd check what this Lisa Boyle is all about), but I did much appreciate the "NSFW" mouse-over in that link.

Your blog is great. It's the little things. You inspire me to write, even though I barely do right now. It must be real pleasure to be able to write so well about the simple things in life. (That's not to discount all your other talents.)

Loved the show; now I have to wait and see the first Aqualad appearance. Always did love that character, and I really like the costume they gave him in the new show.
