« for immediate release! | Main | Hoy todos somos madrileños » March 11, 2004gotta photograph, picture ofTonight, I'm giving a talk to the San Gabriel Valley Linux User's Group about weblogging. I'm focusing my talk on Movable Type (because that's what I use) and Six Apart's fantastic hosted service, TypePad. I'm doing some homework, and I just came across this gallery of really beautiful pictures in someone's blog. I thought, "Wow. That's really cool. I bet WWdN would like that." So there you go. Is this an open meeting for the public too? I've been meaning to write you a not Wil, someday I will...I find you quite an inspiration...(seriously) Cheers -n Posted by: Nick at March 11, 2004 04:55 PMBesure to mention that both Howard Dean and John Kerry used Movable Type blogs to motivate millions of voters to send Bush back to Texas! Posted by: Jake of 8bitjoystick.com at March 11, 2004 05:06 PMThanks for the link to the beautiful pics, Wil. Some of them were truly awesome. :) Posted by: galestorm at March 11, 2004 05:09 PM...Passion killer, you're too much Good song. :) I was listening to that song right before I read the post. Freaky. Thanks for the flashback to the heady teenage years. (nice photos too) ;-) Posted by: Ed Hintz at March 11, 2004 05:42 PMThat really made my class break. Pretty pictures make three hour long I/O psych classes bearable. Thank you. Good luck with the talk. Posted by: Rachel at March 11, 2004 05:55 PMThanks for the link to the beautiful pictures, Wil! The restaurant sign was funny! Have fun at the meeting! :^) Posted by: clara at March 11, 2004 06:18 PMCurse you, Wil Wheaton! Those picts are from the Chinese Garden in my good old hometown. I really should get down there sometime. They have had it closed recently so they could find a leak in the pond. It was leaking about 100,000 gallons a day as I recall. Next time you are up here Wil, you should drop by. Its in Chinatown about 7 blocks from Powells. -gil Posted by: Gil at March 11, 2004 06:52 PMYou've reminded me that I have to go visit the Chinese Garden now that's it reopened! I've only been here for 2 years. That's about the time I should start visiting stuff, right? Heh heh. Beautiful pictures though. Glad you shared them! there is faith in beauty. Posted by: d. burr at March 11, 2004 07:12 PMok, Wil has just finished giving his speech, and, well, the comments in the room are getting rather, umm , steamy? [you had to be there] Posted by: the sgvlug members at March 11, 2004 08:18 PMWil, FG Posted by: Fabian at March 11, 2004 09:44 PMI always giggle when I am downtown and see the Hung Far Low sign. And the Chinese Gardens is a beutiful oasis in the the heart of old town. You really should see it. You should come to Portland and speak at the Oreilly Open Source Convention in July.
to Jake of 8bitjoystick.com ... we don't want bush back in texas. i vote we send him to mars. it's sort of like texas in that plants don't grow there ... he'll never notice the difference. Posted by: katie at March 11, 2004 11:30 PMPortland is definitely gorgeous. I'm glad I live here in Orygun. Posted by: Greg at March 11, 2004 11:52 PMWil, thanks for turning me on to typepad. I really can't see paying for a blogging setup like that, but it's just too good to pass up. Keeps me from having to set it up on my site. meh. Thanks again. Awesome photos. I took some nice ones recently of some Arizona Canyons. I am currently in "The Navajo Nation" and want to get pics of true Navajo life as well as the hopey (horrbly misspelled) life. Especially those that live in Pueblos on the Mesas that choose not the fully be a part of world outside their culture. No, I didn't think so Posted by: Annie at March 12, 2004 12:39 AMA link to someone else's blog...are you beginning the phenomenon of Wildotting? :) Jim I hope the talk went well. Thank you for sharing the photo gallery you found, I love it. It has inspired a few haikus here :) Posted by: Katryn at March 12, 2004 04:10 AMTypePad is great. . .most of the features of Moveable Type without most of the fuss. And decent hosting/storage/uploading options. Posted by: Ahud at March 12, 2004 04:45 AMhey wil, good luck with the talk! Thanks for the pics, I really liked the flower ones. Very Georgia O'Keeffe-ish if you ask me. I really must learn more html, I only know the basics. Guess that's what happens when you teach yourself from free websites...:D Posted by: Lawless1 at March 12, 2004 06:27 AMJust a Quick Note...Those pictures rock...but who works in a place that has cool stuff like that to take pictures of. But on another Blooger with kewl pics note (And I have no affiliation to her, but her blog rocks...and so do her pictures) check out Dooce. http://www.dooce.com/photos.html Posted by: Chad at March 12, 2004 06:37 AMI almost bought a Linux. Too darn expensive. I settled on a four door Saturn with premium sound. Great car. Oh yeah, great pix chief. Posted by: Billy Reno at March 12, 2004 06:53 AMNifty photos. Wish some were bigger, I'd use them on some of my KDE desktops. Speaking of which, WWdN looks alot cooler in Linux. I think I'll stick to that when I browse the blog... Posted by: Eric at March 12, 2004 06:57 AMDude, We slashdotted that site. Are did wilwheaton it? I got zilch. Posted by: Nate at March 12, 2004 07:19 AMI don't mean to be a gadfly, but you might want to check out the w3c validator for your web page. It's got 62 warnings or errors. Right at the top, for example, it notices that you've misspelled "language" in a tag. I bet your redirect for folks coming from "reerepubl" isn't working. Actually, it looks like your other javascript might not be, too, what with some additional spaces in the tag. Posted by: Bitt Faulk at March 12, 2004 07:54 AMIt occurred to me that that came out of the blue. My impetus was that I've recently noticed that a lot of the blogging tools generate really poor markup, and I remember MovableType as one of the worst. I could be wrong about that, but it's still not good, regardless, and you might wanna point it out at your talk. Posted by: Bitt Faulk at March 12, 2004 07:56 AMMy friends & I had a wonderful lunch at Hung Far Low some years back...even though we giggled the whole time. :) Wonderful site Wil, Thanks for sharing the link with us. Posted by: Barb at March 12, 2004 09:44 AMWow a link from Wil Wheaton, on my birthday no less! Thanks everyone for the nice comments on my pictures. The Garden was a truly beatiful place to work. I did indeed use the "Dooce" effect on the pictures and recommend Heather's Site (www.dooce.com). Thanks again Wil and everyone else. Posted by: Scott at March 12, 2004 11:18 AMVery beautiful pictures. Posted by: Devil Girl at March 12, 2004 12:21 PMVery beautiful pictures. Posted by: Devil Girl at March 12, 2004 12:22 PMWil, Just wanted to say I caught your interview on TechTV the other night. Didn't know you were going to be on, but then again, I've been buried in a huge production (script and soundtrack) for a documentary and have been living in front of the computer editing, etc. for what seems like about a million years. So, the one night I said, "Screw this, I've gotta have some time off, I happen to catch ya on the tube NOT in a space suit." Good interview! Keep lookin' up and good move on the Writer's Market purchase. I do the online version and it has been more helpful than anything else I've bought for keeping track of projects, etc. Posted by: spacewriter at March 12, 2004 12:50 PMI love the Hung Far Low (http://portland.typepad.com/photos/saturday_at_work/hunfarlowdooce.html) Best cheap drinks in Portland.
