I knew that college math would come in handy someday, but I never thought it would be for this.

My high school pre-calc teacher celebrated his children's pi birthdays. He would have a cake and everything. One of his poor kids had to be up at like 2am so they could celebrate him turning 3.141592... years old.

He even showed us the home movie.

I never knew of this, and I'm a math teacher! I wish today was a school day! On a schoolday I have a freshman class at 1:59 and I could have really gone all nerd on them, they love busting me about that!!!

I don't get it. "n" is the 14th letter in the alphabet. Is that what you mean? What about "m" or even "o", they're also good letters. I think it unfair that you just pick out one letter and ignore all the rest of the letters in the alphabet. That's 23 other letters that don't have a day. What's going to happen to them? Don't you have a sense of compassion? What would we do without all those other letters?

Aren't those guys real big on Wrestlemania? Bulging muscles, like the Hulk. Can you imagine getting on a bus and sitting next to one of those guys? You wouldn't have as much room in your seat, sort of squeezed in between the bus window and the Hulk next too you - as you try to write on your laptop. And then the Wrestlemania guy would start looking over your shoulder to see what you're writing - and make some comment, like, dude that's an "awkward sentence" - get rid of it. Or use the ACTIVE VOICE. Then of course you would be friendly about it and agree.

Ha ha My friends and I have been celebrating pi day for years! The awesome thing is that now we're in college and there are more nerds to celebrate with us! Nerds abound in my dorm. Every hall is named after a location or character from Lord of the Rings.

D'oh! Here in Australia it's only 14/3. We have to wait for 31/4 for pi day.

Come to think of it, 22/7 would make a pretty good approximation of pi day too.

As a 6th grade math teacher, we take pi day very seriously in my class. There are some great websites about pi day and ways to celebrate. My personal favorite is getting some of my 6th graders to sing pi day songs.

When I was in fourth grade math class (a disconcertingly long time ago), we were learned about pi for the first time, and I pointed out, "Hey, today is pi!" ..It was March 14, and my teacher looked at me like I was some sort of mutant, but one without cool superpowers, just an extra set of eyebrows or something.

Anyway, ever since then I've celebrated Pi Day. I didn't know anybody else even noticed things like that.

See, I've had an aversion to 314 for so many years. I'll just randomly look at a clock, and it'll say 3:14. Or I see it used in movies when people wake up in the middle of the night and look at their clocks. 3:14 into an mp3. 314 hitpoints in a game. 3 1/4 miles to the next freeway exit. Turn to page 314 in your book. Pi. It happens so much, and so randomly, it's scary. Not that I expect anyone to believe me. But it makes me fear March 14th. Bad things always happen. I just got done mopping my kitchen floor because I dropped a jar of apple juice and it spilled everywhere. Bad things, I tell you.

I believe "Ides" translates roughly to "the middle" Therefore "The Ides of March" would be someting like "The Middle of March", which suggests March 15. But, seeing as how there are actually 31 days in March, then the "Ides" of March really should be March 16, as there are exactly 15 days before, and 15 days after, March 16.

ah, good old pi day. i learned about it a few years back when i came across a website detailing a group's celebration. everyone made pie's and they were in a circular room so they circumnavigated it 2 and whateverthefractionis times.

the local university has a society of pi that's going around and pieing people to raise money for charity... i hope they celebrated this day.

hehee, Pi Day is awsome! When I was in college we celebrated it every year. Though since I was a math major, that might not be that odd... We also had a Pi Sale every year for the Math club. We would sell out in about 45 minutes. Only $10 for 2*Pi handcrafted by geeks with little cut out integral signs on the top!

Yikes...

You get +20 geek point for thinking up something as crazy as celebrating π day....but -2000 geek points for not finding the symbol for pi...and using an "n" instead.

I had to re-read that first sentence about 5 times to try to figure out what the heck you were talking about. Was it an expleative so haneous that you could only refer to it as the "n" word?

After reading your blog, realizing that it was indeed Pi Day, and thinking it was the coolest thing ever, I wished my friends a Happy Pi Day. And they ALL called me a dork. Considering how important Pi is to life as we know it, it shouldn't be so underappreciated!

Every year on Thanksgiving, my mother makes two apple pies. One of them has a piece of dough shaped like an apple; the other, one shaped like the Greek letter "pi". And my brother and I often, when we ask about pie, say that we want a piece of 3.1415926535897932384626433832... (and, unlike Brad who posted above, that was from memory).

Of course, since e doesn't have the same prestige as pi, I've only memorized its first ten digits: 2.718281828.

I always love running into fellow geeks on the web - that also shows that the part of Wesley Crusher was well-cast: the actor is almost as much of a geek as he was! (Of course, as a physicist, I enjoy picking apart the Trek technobabble - for example, in real physics, a tachyon is a particle that only exists in "sick" theories because it has imaginary mass and, therefore, travels at v > c...)

I guess we are a household of nerds. My daughter and niece made a special trip to the market on Sunday to get blueberries so we all could celebrate pi day with a pie and pi recitation.

Now, what to do next year for e day. We hadn't thought of doing that one before...
