« foley is good. | Main | inches on the reel to reel » March 15, 2004radio is cleaning up the nationThe Dancing Barefoot publicity explosion officially begins today! Well, tonight, to be more specific. At 7PM PST, I'm going to be on a show called The David Lawrence Show to talk about
You can listen live online, but it looks like they make you sign up for this bitpass thing. The good part is I think it costs 25 cents to listen for an hour. The bad part is, you have to sign up for this bitpass thing. Update: Ana points out in the comments that KBNP in Portland simulcasts the show live, and they have a stream at their site that you can listen to. It's annoying .wmv format, but it's free. If anyone else finds other live stations, leave it in the comments, won't you? You'll be glad you did. Update Two: Electric Boogaloo: David Lawrence himself says: Some listening notes: we're heard live in 55 markets, including Phoenix, Boston, Detroit, Phildelphia, Portland, Denver, Dallas, Minneapolis, Jacksonville and more, and we're on both satellite radio networks (on XM, we're on Extreme XM, Channel 152, and on Sirius, we're on Talk Central, Stream 144) The show is also broadcast live into a few radio markets. Check the site for details. Tune in, if you can. It would be sofakingcool if WWdN readers called in tonight. Awesome! I'll be listening!! Hooray Wil! Posted by: moonkiss at March 15, 2004 10:12 AMhmmm...im really dumb and i dont know what this bitpass thing is. help? pretty please? Posted by: julie reppert at March 15, 2004 10:12 AMCongrats, Wil! We'll be rooting/mojoing for you! Posted by: redhaiku at March 15, 2004 10:16 AMPhil Torrone is after you--he doesn't sleep! He develops some kick-ass Flash stuff, and I'd recommend sticking around for that. Posted by: Russ at March 15, 2004 10:18 AMCongrats Wil!! Maybe I'm just out of it, but I can't seem to find what time this will start. Anyone know? I start at 7PM PST. I'll update the main entry to reflect that, now. :) Posted by: wil at March 15, 2004 10:24 AMOh it's Lawrence not Letterman. For a moment there, when my eyes had only gotten as far as "show called the David L..." I thought I would be staying up very late! Alas I am bitpass ignorant and geographically compromised (northern Ohio.) So have fun and knock 'em dead. Hey, Letterman and the big time ain't out of the question you know. I am hopin' and wishin' for you. Posted by: Jeanine at March 15, 2004 10:25 AMhey wil, take care He's on here -- but only on Saturdays. Crud. And it's a conservative talk station that I normally only listen to for Stanford sports (go Cardinal!). Double crud. Oh well, knock 'em dead...and while you're at it, tell him that black type on dark grey background totally reeks. (I work for a non-profit that serves the visually impaired, but that doesn't mean I want to lose what vision I have left looking at shitty web sites!) 'Nuff said... Heya Wil: Congrats dude!! Unfortunately, I don't get that show here in Toronto but am sure you'll be amazing! Any chance of either getting a transcript of the show or you entering it on your blog? I'd love to read it. Break a leg... Jodie Posted by: Jodie at March 15, 2004 10:50 AMBTW: As I can't call in, I have e-mailed my question for ya! Jodie Posted by: Jodie at March 15, 2004 10:53 AMCool beans on the radio show, I'll see what I can do about tuning in. And for what it's worth, I've used the bitpass thing, it's actually not too bad, wish there was some more material available that used it, actually. It's basically a system that lets people take and make tiny payments, like $0.10 or a quarter, that they would never be able to do affordably with a regular credit card payment and the like. From everything I've read, they charge some really reasonable rates to the people who use their services, and are generally not evil. I've used them a few times in the past to pay for access to stuff, like Makeshift Miracle, which was easily good enough to get published in comic book form IMHO, and probably would have cost me near $4+ on paperback to buy if printed, but was available for $0.50 through bitpass. And no, I don't work for bitpass or anything, just wanted folks to know that I've used them and, at least in my experience, they didn't suck. :) Posted by: Katsushiro at March 15, 2004 10:57 AMIf you go to the home page of the David Lawrence show, he gives you links to several radio stations that air the show. you can open up the live radio feed from their sites and you don't have to pay. yay! Posted by: Ana at March 15, 2004 11:29 AM"It would be sofakingcool if WWdN readers called in tonight"
Some listening notes: we're heard live in 55 markets, including Phoenix, Boston, Detroit, Phildelphia, Portland, Denver, Dallas, Minneapolis, Jacksonville and more, and we're on both satellite radio networks (on XM, we're on Extreme XM, Channel 152, and on Sirius, we're on Talk Central, Stream 144) Wil's hour will also be repeated on both satellite channels (and on several of our stations that carry the first hour repeated) at 10p PT. You can also listen, for free, online to the streams of several of our radio affiliates. Most people listen to KBNP in Portland, Oregon - www.kbnp.com. The BitPass is there only for downloading the show after the fact, and it's 25c for the 9 meg MP3 file for Wil's hour, and 50c for the 30 meg file of the whole 3 hour show. BitPass rocks, by the way. They've really made micropayments (and macropayments, actually) a snap. The toll free number to call in with questions at 7p PT is 888-488-DAVID (888-488-3284), and the lines fill up quickly when I announce the number, so set a reminder, and we'll see you tonight! David Posted by: David Lawrence at March 15, 2004 11:43 AMWill you and Mr. Lawrence discuss the pro-Ayn Rand rant he went on last Saturday on his program? I think that Objectivism fails to deal with the issue of children and how acting in one's self interest harms children. If you get a chance -- and are interested -- could you ask? Thanks Posted by: Rusty at March 15, 2004 11:57 AMSorry, Rusty, but I think that's well outside the scope of my interview tonight. Thanks for posting that info, David! I didn't know you were on XM! XM is the rock. See you tonight! Posted by: wil at March 15, 2004 12:20 PMCoo, we write the software that David Lawrence uses....six degrees of separation. Gregor Congrats. Wil too. Posted by: Sherrie at March 15, 2004 01:02 PMFor those Linux users who can't easily get WMP streams to work, like myself. WGN has a Real stream of the show: Hey, Wil! i emailed you an incredibly lame set of questions for the show! I hope you get a chance to read them and answer them! that was cool of david to give us that info. I bet the phone lines will be swamped! Posted by: seasnail at March 15, 2004 01:44 PMgrr...it says that he's syndicated in denver, but i can't find a station that lists him. can anyone help me out here. i'd like to tune in tonight. Posted by: gil at March 15, 2004 01:52 PMI ain't shellin out no quarter for no bitpass. That's a half hour on the clothes dryer! But here's my question. How much of a douche is Corey Feldman? Posted by: Billy Reno at March 15, 2004 02:01 PMI'll miss out on what I'm sure will be a great radio event! Good luck tonight, Wil. Obligatory wwdn TNG reference: "Make it so!"-that bald guy. Hey Billy Reno: Awesome Corey Feldman dis! Saw your last comment and i want to get in on the bashing! What'd he do that pissed you off? The guy is not only a douche but also a complete tool. Posted by: Mr. Sandwiches at March 15, 2004 03:12 PMcool beans, Wil!! I won't be staying up late enough to listen live, but I'll download the MP3 tomorrow. bitpass kicks ass - been with them from the beginning. cheers, and have a fantastic time tonight! Posted by: Dea at March 15, 2004 03:58 PMHi Wil, Just wanted to say that your book arrived yesterday and I had to ration myself to only 55 pages last night because otherwise I'd have nothing to read tonight, hope JAG will be longer. Especially liked the first story, what you went through after your Aunt died had so many parallels to my experiences when my Nan died it was 'scary' Anyway, good luck with the radio show, will be downloading tommorow as I don't think it'll be broadcast here in 'Blighty' Cheers, Chris. Posted by: Chris Branscomb at March 15, 2004 04:23 PMwmv's just another word for But wmv sounds good enough lord I'll be listening Wil....please resonate prior to showtime in such a manner as to bring about a disintegrating action amongst the calcified region of your left tibia good lord...somebody call me a cab Posted by: CIO at March 15, 2004 04:48 PMThat's very cool. Can't wait. By the way, do you have more good news???? Posted by: angry penguin at March 15, 2004 05:13 PMDoes anyone have any idea what time 7pm PST is when you live in Australia. In fact, what does PST stand for and that will give me a good start. I would really like to listen, but this is again just one of the many disadvantages of living in Australia. If anyone can help me out and tell me what time it is going to air, either in GMT time or GMT+10 that would rock! \m/ Posted by: Mitch at March 15, 2004 05:46 PMThe show airs live at 3:00 AM GMT (we have folks from London on all the time, and they *adore* getting up at that time of night), which would seem to indicate 1p Tuesday of you're GMT+10. Does that mean you already have tomorrow's lottery numbers? Um...care to share? :) David Posted by: David Lawrence at March 15, 2004 06:09 PMIt's on in 20minutes. Too bad I have to go to sleep. Stupid timezones :( Posted by: D-Kynen at March 15, 2004 06:35 PMIn case you miss it tonight, the WGN RealPlayer stream repeats on Sunday @ 11am eastern time. \m/ Posted by: Tony at March 15, 2004 06:49 PMOnce David Lawrence started his religious crusade against any sort of file sharing; and now having to pay to listen to the recorded show archives I have stopped listening to him. To bad, sometimes he had a good bit of information or two. Posted by: Irish at March 15, 2004 06:50 PMWil, Just received my copy of Dancing Barefoot and read the story about Aunt Val. I actually got a lump in my throat and a tear in my eye. I saw the picture of you and Aunt Val in your photo gallery--she is a beautiful lady. Thanks so much for sharing your life with us. Your friend, Freeman. :) Posted by: Freeman in Louisiana at March 15, 2004 06:50 PMDoh! Make that 10PM! Posted by: Tony at March 15, 2004 06:52 PMAwesome, I like the take off the EC song :) Posted by: dj at March 15, 2004 07:00 PMI am tuning in right now! So exciting! I think I can pick up my offical geek card now, I just giggly wrote an IM question to Wil Wheaton for a live Radio program I'm listening to on-line Posted by: Purple Peril at March 15, 2004 07:20 PMMan, I sounded starstruck with that first question. Im not usually... It was really cool talking to you guys though. When you get to San Diego, Wil, I know some great, out of the way spots if you want to take the time to eat here. Email me if you want more. Listening now! Posted by: Lurk Liggler at March 15, 2004 07:53 PMScared to come to my wedding Wil? Heh. That was cool that he asked my question though. It sounded like you guys took me a bit seriously though. Oh well. It was great to hear you tonight. Posted by: Jeffery Borchert at March 15, 2004 07:57 PMWil, I missed the first hour, but luckily tuned in to hear Dave say "Wil's gonna stay as long as we want him to" so I felt happy. Then I listened to the talk of the fist and started laughing out loud. My husband casually walked over, removed my headphones and informed me if I kept laughin like that I'd wake up the children :P You talk just like you write..or is it you write just like you talk...either way, both sounds so comfortable and confident... Good work dude. Ok, I feel so good they read my IM question on Air.
Thanks for answering my question on the show about the copyrights. O'Reiley's being Ok with the creative common license is really amazing. I always like to think that the people who publish all the Linux books are cool, but it's great to hear it confirmed. Here is the comment I was going to epilog with, but I got cut off for some reason: Thanks for the web site links. It was cool to call in. I ordered my copy of DB today from Amazon; I can't wait to get it! Congratulations again Wil on the book contract, and all the best. Posted by: Craig Steffen at March 15, 2004 08:45 PMCan anyone tell me if Wil responded to my questions/comments about the portrayal of gay people in film and television? I couldn't get the broadcast to work on my crappy 8 year old laptop with dial-up :( Maybe someone can post a transcript? Posted by: Easter at March 15, 2004 09:14 PMOkay, so this is my second comment tonight so sue me :P I emailed this..but I have to say it again.. I sit here listening to you read about Aunt Val's house... In the past three years, I've buried my mother, my father, and my grandfather. I helped clean 2 of the three houses. I'm weeping. You asked for email regarding you doing ebooks, and reading selections. You've captured a feeling I could never put to words. T Posted by: Tasha at March 15, 2004 09:33 PMWil -- I've got to say -- this is probably one of the best 3 hours of radio that I've listened to in a LONG TIME. Thank you so much for your time and for reading from DB. Thank you thank you thank you. Nags Posted by: Nags at March 15, 2004 09:46 PMEaster - not that I remember. Wil did talk quickly at the end about his blog about gay marriage. Wil, a very awesome 3 hours. Never planned on staying up this late but couldn't stop listening once I tuned in. Luckily I was able to use mplayer to listen to the stream once I copied the link from the .asx. Hopefully I will get the chance to meet you soon. Maybe if I make it Penguicon in MI in April. -steve Posted by: spi at March 15, 2004 10:03 PMEaster - not that I remember. Wil did talk quickly at the end about his blog about gay marriage. I think what I found most alluring was your "everyman" quality. What I mean by "everyman", is the sort of person who can walk into a room, and people almost immediately feel comfortable with - or like the perfect psychologist, who you believe will understand you almost immediately and you're willing to confide with. It is something I think someone like Johnny Carson had in spades, and the reason why he did so well (besides great wit). Another striking element while you were on was your authenticity and your quickness of mind. I think writing - writing BLOGS/JOURNALS helps one in this area. You get used to expressing yourself, and a good way to do so is to reach in and get out whatever is there at the moment - and just keep doing it, until it almost becomes second nature. They say great Artists are human like everyone else, but only more so.
Wil, thank you for the most enjoyable 3 hours on the radio. Posted by: clarai at March 15, 2004 10:16 PMHey Easter, he did read your e-mail on the air! But I don't remember what he said because it was just after I was on the air and I was too flustered! Posted by: Placebo Effect at March 15, 2004 10:27 PMI ordered my copy this afternoon from my friendly Linux distributor (who I persuaded to stock it). Posted by: Matt at March 15, 2004 10:58 PMDoes anyone know how to get ahold of a download of the interview, or does it stream from the website? Go to http://thedavidlawrenceshow.com/001806.html -steve Posted by: spi at March 16, 2004 09:27 AMFigures ;) You have to buy at least a $3.00 pass, and the only credit card I have is a pre-paid card I use, and it has $2.50 on it :P So I'd have to put a minimum of $5.00 more on my card (the lowest amount I can add at any given time) to bring my total to $7.50 to pay for .75 worth of air time I want to hear ;) Posted by: Easter at March 16, 2004 11:02 AMi am listening to the 3rd hour i bought just now, and heard the reading of dancing barefoot. all i can say is wow. reading the words is one thing, but hearing them read by the author is a whole new thing. are there any intentions to release it as a book on tape? i am crazy jealous of your writing talent.
