March 15, 2004

inches on the reel to reel

The David Lawrence Show was quite possibly the greatest 3 hour radio interview I've ever done. Seriously. It was AWESOME.

David and Lili did an outstanding job of making me feel welcome. I felt like David and I had fantastic give and take, and he'd actually read my book! All the other shows I do have a pretty high standard to live up to, now.

David asked me if I'd come back another time, so we can talk about other stuff, and I agreed. I think we could have some awesome conversations.

When I drove home, I checked XM 152, and my interview was being rebroadcast. It was very weird to hear myself just a few hours ago, because I could still visualize the studio, but I'd already forgotten what I said -- that's a great thing, because when I can't remember what I talked about, or I can't clearly remember what happened during any sort of performance, it means that I was totally focused and "in the moment," as Meisner would say.

This was the first official O'Reilly-version interview to support Dancing Barefoot, and it could not have gone any better. Thank you, David Lawrence, for putting me at ease, and guiding me though an amazing interview. I can't wait to do it again.

And thank you also to everyone who tuned in, or sent IMs and e-mails, and stuff. Thank you for continuing to be part of this amazing . . . thing.

Programming note: If you're in Seattle, you can hear me on the Bob Harris Rivers* Show on KZOK 102.5 radio at 8:40 tomorrow morning (That's Tuesday)

*Too much Lost In Translation. Sorry, Bob.
UPDATE: As of 0725 PST on March 16, Dancing Barefoot is ranked 480 at Amazon.com.

Holy.

Crap.

Of all the books they carry, it's at 480. It was in the 3,000 area just a couple of days ago.

This is just amazing, and I'm positive that my appearance on the David Lawrence Show last night contributed to this.

And on that "It's better together" thing? It's "better" with Neverwhere!!! NEVERWHERE!!

ROCK! \m/

Will it be possible to download the interview somewhere?

Posted by: patrick at March 15, 2004 11:13 PM

I've never heard you do another radio show, but that was definitely the best one I've heard of others. I just kept thinking "Wow". Many have said it, but that's because it's true: There's this great "realness" to you.. You don't see that from a lot of people, let alone famous ones.
I was actually introduced to this site by a friend, and didn't even follow your work when you were younger, though I had definitely heard of you. Now I'm glad he gave me the link! Keep up the great work!
*rushes out to buy the book*

Fabulous radio interview tonight. I listened to all 3 hours. Hearing you read the book reminded me to hop over to Amazon and buy a copy, I can't wait to read the rest of the stories!

Keep up the great writing here and in print!

Missed it all (Time difference - UK).
Where can I listen to it?.

Posted by: Griff at March 15, 2004 11:22 PM

Posted by: Jon at March 16, 2004 12:59 AM

Right now Dancing Barefoot is #616 on the Amazon sales rank. I am sure it will go even higher as you do more publicity. Go Wil! :)

Posted by: Kristi at March 16, 2004 01:40 AM

You know what interview you really, really ought to do, if your people can swing it? The Daily Show. I'm just sayin' . . . .

I live in Seattle, but I've never heard of this Bob Harris show. And, of course, googling for bob harris just gets you loads of "Lost in Translation" hits.

Posted by: Andrew Sweger at March 16, 2004 03:45 AM

I live in Seattle and have never heard of Bob Harris either.

I'll go google for his show. Can't be that hard to find.

Posted by: Rob at March 16, 2004 04:27 AM

Hi Wil -

Very, very well done - I heard the whole thing except the first 5 minutes. Of course I'm a little tired this a.m. - I live in NY, so it finished up late! It sounded like you guys really "clicked", to use a lame term. As you said, it was nice to have someone interview you that "gets it".

Wonderful job on the reading of the story about Aunt Val ... always one of my favorites, and I'm sure it was difficult! David Lawrence also mentioned how it really came through your writing about that you were upset that the house was being sold, even though it was supposed to stay in the family. The one thing that I have always thought, ever since I read that story, was this - yes, of course Aunt Val's house was a special place; how could it not be with all those terrific times spent there, and memories grown there? But it wasn't Aunt Val's house that made those times special - it was Aunt Val. I'm sure she could have lived in a cardboard box and made your visits just as special.

I know this because my mom died four years ago, and even though my dad still lives in the that same house - it's not home anymore. It was home because my mom was there.

Great way to kick off the "media blitz" - sending you mojo for continued success (and for patience for all the interviews that will not be as much fun as this!)

guess im lucky im in seattle, i will listen at work today :)

Posted by: dj at March 16, 2004 04:51 AM

Hey Wil

I was amazed at the speed with which my IM question got answered. I sent it off, and it got read out on air like 2 minutes later! :D

I was the guy sitting up at 4:30am in the UK listening in. Coulda answered my question with more than a 'No' though. :P

Posted by: Zevemiel at March 16, 2004 05:00 AM

And thank you. Made a cold, homework-ridden night in Bostonian suburbia more bearable.

Posted by: Adrienne at March 16, 2004 05:09 AM

Enjoyed the show, tuned in for the whole thing. Way to go Wil

For Seattle listeners, it's the Bob Rivers show on KZOK (102.5) that Wil is appearing on this morning. (http://www.bobrivers.com or http://www.kzok.com )

Posted by: BrianP at March 16, 2004 06:24 AM

Heard all 3 hours and I thought it was an awesome interview! It was very fluid and didn't focus on any one area of your career too much which was nice.

I thought your reading from Aunt Val's story was amazing, had me choked up thinking about MY Aunt Val.

Good mojo to you for the future interviews.

Posted by: Tim at March 16, 2004 06:31 AM

Wil, you do not disappoint. All three hours were awesome...save the dumb commercials that apparently overlapped some witty conversation that never made it to the air. And thanks for reading a bit from 'Houses in Motion'. It was wonderful to hear you read from a story that obviously means a lot to you. Sending mojo for future interviews to live up to David Lawrence!

Posted by: Abby at March 16, 2004 06:54 AM

I was highly entertained for the WHOLE three hours, except for the crappy feed. LOL But I lived through it and was glued to my computer speakers for the full 3 hours!!!

Posted by: Nags at March 16, 2004 07:25 AM

Bob Rivers (http://www.bobrivers.com) and Twisted Radio is 102.5 FM.

They usually have audio clips of interviews up the next day sometimes as soon as that afternoon.

Dunno, if I had anything to do with this but hell, I e-mailed them about you. Like to think I helped but since Seattle is kind of a geek haven, I'm sure more than just me requested you as a guest.

Posted by: Don at March 16, 2004 07:32 AM

Hey! Well done Wil! Doubt I'll ever here the radio interview seeing as I live in the UK but I'm giving you all my support. Great people deserve success in all they do! I will get a copy of the book...

Posted by: Rachael at March 16, 2004 07:41 AM

.....UPDATE from me! I've just purchased 'Dancing Barefoot' at amazon.co.uk! I can hold my head up high now!

Hurry up Royal Mail...... hee!

Posted by: Rachael at March 16, 2004 07:46 AM

Hey Wil, Did know if you noticed this, but Amazon is saying in their "Customers who bought this book also bought" section, If you like Dancing Barefoot, you might like For Us the Living by Robert A. Heinlein! Dude, they are comparing you to Heinlein! ROCK!

Posted by: JesseB at March 16, 2004 08:03 AM

How exciting!! Congrats, Wil!!

Posted by: Laura at March 16, 2004 08:12 AM

So how many books does that translate to?

Posted by: silverbax at March 16, 2004 08:17 AM

Crap crap crap. I listen to the Bob Rivers' show here in Seattle every morning, and you're on after I'm at my desk. I work in a metal box, so no radio reception. Here's hoping I can sneak out to my car to listen. Oh.. Bob is in Los Angeles for the filming of an episode of Enterprise for UPN 11, and will probably grill you on your Star Trek experiences. They're good guys though. Have fun.

Posted by: abyssleaper at March 16, 2004 08:19 AM

Neverwhere is such an awesome book to be set as the accompanier to!! To be held up with Neil Gaiman must feel SO AMAZING. Can't wait to see what happens as your promotions continue for the book!

Posted by: Kristen at March 16, 2004 08:22 AM

Best 3 hours ever!
It's nice to know that you are an artist that really appreciates the good fortunes coming his way and not like the majority who feel they are owed that. Yours is true gratification and it shows in the work you do and in this candid blog of yours. You really love what you do and it's quite obvious that you are not in it for the money (although I'm sure that wouldn't hurt, but you know what I'm getting at)because this is truly who you are and what you do. You have more passion on the tip of your finger than most actors have in their life. Congratulations,Wil. All the hard work is going to pay off,big time!

Posted by: Tommy at March 16, 2004 08:25 AM

Sending the mojo to the spouse:

"Must...get...XM...must...get...XM...."

Glad it went well; sorry I missed it.

Posted by: Roberta at March 16, 2004 08:31 AM

What timing! I just read your blog this morning, but I thought I might have missed your interview. Then I looked at my clock, and saw that it was 8:36 - 4 minutes to spare! Woohoo!

Posted by: Kirsten at March 16, 2004 08:37 AM

Okay, I bought a second copy of your book to send to my aunt in Florida. She's responsible for introducing Star Trek to me as a child, and we both enjoy poking fun at You-Know-Who's acting style. She's looking forward to reading it!

Didn't get to hear your interview (I'm on the East Coast and the links you provided didn't work out for me) but I'll try to catch a re-broadcast.

Congrats dude!!!!

Posted by: Lawless1 at March 16, 2004 08:41 AM

I just bought your book, can't wait to read it. It's #438 right now on the Amazon list - go you!

Posted by: Carrie at March 16, 2004 08:44 AM

I'm so happy for you (and jealous, too)!!!

Posted by: lee at March 16, 2004 08:59 AM

Neverwhere is awesome!
And, being bundled with it, probably says a lot about your book too.

I'm going to have to pick up your book soon!!!

Hey, are you selling autographed copies of your book (online or anywhere else)?

Posted by: DarthPedro at March 16, 2004 09:19 AM

Too bad that Bob Rivers was in his usual mode of trying to stir up controversy, and spending so much time on TNG instead of the book. Nonetheless it was great to hear you - best of luck with the Dancing Barefoot promotional tour! :)

Posted by: Kirsten at March 16, 2004 09:19 AM

Kirsten: Yeah. That sucked, big time. Especially since we (O'Reilly and I) told them that we really didn't want to talk about Star Trek. I mean, I'm not promoting Star Trek. I'm promoting my book.

And would it have killed him to have even looked at my book? Maybe just a nice skimming of the back cover?

After I hung up, I remembered that I spoke with them for Weakest Link a few years ago, and he spent the whole interview trying to get negative stories about the cast.

Oh well. Live and learn.

Posted by: wil at March 16, 2004 09:28 AM

Congratulations, Wil!
So nice to hear you so happy!

Posted by: reallylikesj at March 16, 2004 10:32 AM

NEVERWHERE?! Sweet, dude. That is awesome.

Oh, yeah, and congrats on all the other awesome stuff, too. :)

Posted by: Yook at March 16, 2004 11:41 AM

Holy! Cow!

You and Gaiman? Talk about serendipity. The only two Blogs I read.

Now you will have something to talk about when you meet at Penguincon. See? You don't have to go fan-boy anymore!

Good luck with that by the way. I'd go completely fan-girl myself, so I have no room from which to speak....

Posted by: Debby at March 16, 2004 11:42 AM

Nice job on the interview. I snuck out to my car to listen. Up to this point, I was always relatively impressed with Bob Rivers' interview style, but Bob sucked this time. I didn't think he was trying to stir anything up, but he was focused on your Star Trek experience. Kinda makes sense though, since he'd just done his guest appearance thing on Enterprise.

You handled them very well, and actually made Bob look like an ass as far as I'm concerned.

Great interview. I'd been planning on buying Dancing Barefoot and JAG at the same time, but will get DB now.

Posted by: abyssleaper at March 16, 2004 12:23 PM

I miss one day here and look what happens. I miss a great interview. Oh, well.

BTW, your Amazon ranking is now 315.

Posted by: loretta652 at March 16, 2004 12:37 PM

It's at 296 now! Congrats!

Posted by: teth at March 16, 2004 02:08 PM

I don't think we get this radio show in Milwaukee (maybe I should look into XM), so I didn't get to hear you Wil, but I'm liking the use of Elvis C. in these last two postings! Maybe there's still hope for you after confessing to be a wrestling fan. :-) You need to make a reference to "Everyday I Write the Book" (one of my all-time favorites) sometime. Certainly appropriate!

What's so funny about peace, love and understanding anyhow?

Posted by: Shaun at March 16, 2004 02:51 PM

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to your interview during my afternoon at work (streaming from KBNP). Here in Oz it started after 2pm. I finished work at 4:30pm and you were just starting to read from your book. I wish I stayed back to hear it all, but I had to go home. Thanks.

Posted by: Mark at March 16, 2004 03:06 PM

Forget the 400s. As of this posting you are 244 @amazon, nowhere but #1 to go!!!!

Posted by: Steven Citron-Pousty at March 16, 2004 04:29 PM

Hello Wil!
At 7:15 eastern time, you are at 244 at Amazon! That is astonishingly good. So who did you pay to get paired with Neverwhere? So anyway, have you ever given thought to phase II and phase III of your journey into PROFESSIONAL AUTHOR? I think you should find a nearby independent bookstore who would be interested in being your personal book sellers, where they can sell your books that you sign (like Neil Gaiman does with Dreamhaven Books!). Figure this, with the success of Dancing Barefoot, JAG is bound to be a hit and what a great way to get those signed books all over the country? Just a thought, I hope you would consider it. Dave

Posted by: David Garrett at March 16, 2004 04:29 PM

radio hosts like to interview people like you...some one who gets "in the moment" and just rolls with it...we get so many that have what they want to say already set in their minds and they sound so scripted and stiff...especially at a small market station like the one i work at...and of course as you know, with radio you can come in with a big boil on the end of your nose and no one will ever have to know...unless you're doing an interview with me and i tell them...keep up the strong campaign...you are building bridges that will be important long after this tour is over.

Posted by: d. burr at March 16, 2004 04:35 PM

You know what also helped with amazon? I think some one said in comments to one of your recent entries that you can totally add DB to your Amazon wishlist! I can't snag the book right now but I'm hoping since it's like number one on my wishlist my Uncle will buy it for me for my birthday.
...
Whoa. Totally babbled in your blog. Don't mind me.
Also random: I've been to the town that O'Reilly is based out of, Sebastopol. That place rocks! Whenever you're there you must stop by the Sebastopol Cookie Company, it's totally good eats. :-)

Posted by: Jenny M. Finster at March 16, 2004 04:43 PM

The rank was 232 when I checked. I bought a copy so I'd have an O'Reilly version. That makes three copies for me. Here's to a top 100 by the end of the week!!!

Posted by: Steven at March 16, 2004 07:09 PM

#225 and counting.....
you will hit the top 10, I am positive of it. :-)

MOJO ON!

Caught you on Bob Rivers! I was hoping to hear more about your writing on there, but it was good to hear from you on the radio.

((I've been reading the blog a while anyway, but figured I'd give a shout out now and let you know that yes, people really were listening!))

Posted by: Kelli Zielinski at March 20, 2004 01:52 PM

Yeah, I've heard David Lawrence interview Dean Cameron a couple of times -- once for Mr. Sterling and once for the Bill of Rights: Security Edition.

When David moved out here he called me about doing some headshots for him, but it didn't end up happening. I've bumped into him since then at the Viper Room once or twice.
