« oscillate wildly | Main | big up to ben » March 31, 2004reel around the fountainA week or so ago, I did an interview with Developershed about WWdN, Dancing Barefoot, D&D, Nethack, and Sammy Hagar vs. David Lee Roth. It just hit the web this morning, in their magazine called Plugin. I'm very happy with the way the interview ended up, and the graphic design of of the piece is fantastic. There are lots of nifty pictures in there that made me feel sort of cool for 25 seconds. Warning: when you read it, you will discover that, like, when I talk, it's, like, really clear that I'm all, like, from the San Fernando Valley and stuff. Sorry about that. W00t! First post! This is Rich, from DeveloperShed. It was great doing the interview with you, and I can tell you that all of us (well, some of us anyways) have taken to reading your blog on a (semi) regular basis. Posted by: Rich at March 31, 2004 10:13 AMWil Thanks for doing the interview with us! We had a blast writing it up and Im glad you liked the way it turned out. We are already getting rave reviews from the folks over at OReilly! I hope your book continues to do fantastically! Great interview, Wil. Way to go! Posted by: geoster at March 31, 2004 10:14 AMLOVE The "Smiths" refrences Cool interview Posted by: HJ at March 31, 2004 10:24 AMWil, I think you have reached "critical mass." I predict that after your book [JAG] comes out virtually everyone in the western part of the country will have one or two degrees of separation from you with the rest of the country not far behind! Enjoyed the interview. Posted by: Rob at March 31, 2004 10:35 AMSeeing as I was the editor in charge of putting the interview to print (thereby revealing the apparently valley-girl-like speech patterns of Wil), I feel that I should comment on the interview. It was fun. It was cool. (But what else would one expect?) And on to related matters... Nevertheless, like all here, I enjoyed being part of this interview and wish all the best to you in future endeavors. As Rich mentioned, some of us have taken to reading your blog on a pretty regular basis, if we weren't already checking it out once in a while before. ;-) Posted by: gnorb at March 31, 2004 10:39 AMThat interview was cool and for the folks that wrote it- I've never heard of your mag before but I'll be checking it all out- so this gets you a new reader. But the coolest thing-- the Secret of Nimh pic. I mean it's all about the NIMH! I'm so glad to see it got some props. Don Bluth is the man. Posted by: stoolpigeon at March 31, 2004 10:46 AMHey sorry to post again and sorry if this is too off topic but the BSA add in the mag has me crackin' up. It's not the same as the first time I saw an MS ad on /. but close- if any of you devshed folks are still around I just wanted to thank you for that bit of humor in my day. sorry. Posted by: stoolpigeon at March 31, 2004 10:50 AMGreat interview! I especially liked the part where you talked about the facets of your life, how we only read about a small percentage of who you are. The way you write about your life is so open and honest, it just doesn't occur to me that you hold anything back. I've noticed that this sort of editing is hard to do with any subtlety... with most blogs or autobiographies, it's obvious when a person skips things over. Y'know, I sometimes have to remind myself that you're *that* Wil Wheaton, that you're an actor and not just this cool guy with a nifty blog. It's all about the accent, dude. Even if they ah wicked hahd ta undastaynd. New Englander and proud. Posted by: Lynn at March 31, 2004 11:00 AMMore awesome awesome-ness. And hey...in case you didn't know, a picture with you in it from SBM was on Ellen this morning because Jerry O'Connell was on. Primetime exposure...okay, not really. But I thought it was cool. With all this good stuff happening, I think you deserve a cupcake party. Blue icing all around! Posted by: Abby at March 31, 2004 11:07 AMThat's one wicked interview, dude. Posted by: Patty at March 31, 2004 11:18 AMAwesome interview. And you're right they did a good job with the pictures. Posted by: Jenny at March 31, 2004 11:19 AMoh, I meant to tell you something. I've talked about your website to co-workers a long time ago right about the time you got the soapbox, most of whom are not regular internet users. They don't play video games and some of them actually still use ANTENNA's to get t.v. reception in a bid to beat the cable company at their own game... I say go ahead more bandwidth for me. reeling myself back in to what I was going to tell you. Despite all the recent happenings in your life - I've sort of become only the occasional reader myself so I know I haven't mentioned you in a while. At least twice a month someone mentions you, because they think they saw you on T.V. or somewhere. So they are looking out for you, and that's got to be neat. Posted by: Jodi at March 31, 2004 11:34 AMAwesome interview, Wil. Of course, anything that features a slam at Shatner makes me smile... And how did I not know that you were the voice of Martin in NIMH? One of the my all-time fave cartoons--I even broke down and bought it on DVD. Anyway, it was, like, a great read. :) Posted by: Carrie at March 31, 2004 11:36 AMGreat interview. Linguistically could be worse, you could be from up here. "Like how's it goin' eh. RUSH rules" lol Anyway, ride the wave Wil. Enjoy your time in the sun. Here's hoping it's a long and sunny day. Cheers, Very neat interview--very genuine. I agree, I think the photo layout was cool. I think it's awesome that they used the pic with you and Goofy. I wouldn't worry about the "like" speech tic. It only shows up a couple of times in the interview. And it doesn't mark you as someone from the Southern California or anywhere else; that's pretty common all across the country. Love the books--rock on! Posted by: Craig Steffen at March 31, 2004 12:04 PMGreat interview, and fantastic layout in the magazine! Way to go! -AT Posted by: AT at March 31, 2004 12:06 PMGreat interview! Yeah, I'm impressed that you have a 2E book within reach, as well. :) Posted by: Wayne Ligon at March 31, 2004 12:18 PMI haven't had a chance to read the whole interview yet (I'm too busy), but it looks like the best one I've read with you. It's both interesting and you come off as being open. I can relate to some of the regret and angst you express, but of course my circumstances are entirely different. Posted by: synchronicity at March 31, 2004 12:31 PMI mean, "the best interview with you I've read". Eeek, excuse my grammar. Posted by: synchronicity at March 31, 2004 12:33 PMFrom one (former) Valley Boy to another, like, congrats, dude. Posted by: Kroeme at March 31, 2004 12:37 PMGreat interview. It was a nice read while I was at work. I just had a very stressful day of waiting to ask my boss for a raise. I finally went in and did it and he said he'd have to think about it and to come back in a month! (There's a much longer story to this, but I won't bore you.)The point is, when I came back out to my desk and checked your site I was very happy to see that you had updated it so that I had something to read and cheer me up. So, even though it's not for me, thanks! Posted by: Jessie at March 31, 2004 12:40 PMI had a witty comment about your using the f-bomb. I had a comment about your being a bard, and one about wesley. They all sucked. How is it you manage to write stuff? Greatness. that's how. Posted by: José at March 31, 2004 01:02 PMThanks for pointing out the article. I enjoyed reading the interview. Thanks Wil. Posted by: Little_Kenny at March 31, 2004 01:18 PMDoes it make me some kind of creepy stalker if I could imagine *exactly* what you sounded like saying all the stuff in that interview? Or does it just mean you have a memorable and well-honed voice? :) Posted by: ionicus at March 31, 2004 01:24 PMI have to say, I've been reading your blog for a little while now (woo, LJ feeds!), and I'm consistently impressed by the quality of your prose. I've had a soft spot for you-the-actor for longer than you'd probably like to know, as a result of ST:TNG and other things, but I am quite impressed by you-the-writer, and I look forward to continuing to read your blog and your books. I really enjoyed the interview. *trying to avoid sounding like an idiot, because no one likes a 28yo fangirl* Posted by: Classics_cat at March 31, 2004 01:32 PMWil, Awesome interview! -MKF Posted by: Miss Kitty Fantastico at March 31, 2004 01:53 PMWil, you are SO Valley. And you Californicans make fun of the way we Texicans talk! I sure enjoyed reading that interview. And now I have another e-zine to keep up with because Plugin Mag had some other good articles too. Fortunately I like to read. But you know what, Wil? If you take any more blog breaks that distract you from achieving your April 2nd manuscript deadline, you deserve a spanking. Or no dessert or something. Maybe a visit from WFS will straighten you out properly. (SHUDDER!) We (WWdN fans and readers) will be watching closely, so we better not see any new posts until after Friday or... or... something. Good luck with all that - WW fans everywhere await the forthcoming book with bated breath. Or bad breath or bait or something. Thanks for entertaining us. Bill Posted by: Bill at March 31, 2004 02:13 PMI got the reference for the last 5 post titles in a row and I feel cool again. I was starting to feel uncool because I didn't get any of the Pixies references. But when you're lame enough to let your self-image be influenced by pop-culture references, you have to ride the ups and downs. Posted by: phriedom at March 31, 2004 02:24 PMWil, Wesley so does NOT have a 25 AC! I'm sorry but I'm just not buying it. Assuming he's attacked by a Klingon warrior (Fighter) with +1 BAB per level, the Klingon would need to be 6th Level (+6 BAB) on a roll of 19 to hit him with a regular weapon (20 always hits, 1 always misses). Just not right. ;) 18 INT? Definitely. High wisdom? Not sure about that one. His character was all about learning and growing. Sure he had the book smarts but not the life smarts. Ok, I am I going to get a life now. :) Posted by: Jon at March 31, 2004 02:52 PMGreat interview. As usual, you da man. keep it up. I think you're the luckiest guy around. Posted by: Scott Van Essen at March 31, 2004 02:54 PMWesley's AC is so high because he can stop time, but it's probably a feat, and it would certainly have to be part of a prestige class character. I'm pretty sure stopping time would limit attacks of opportunity, too. /nerd Posted by: wil at March 31, 2004 03:12 PMLoved the interview. I especially loved this line - "And with the exception of George (Takei), they were all really unhappy" - because I think it is very true. At the last Expo here in T-town, it only took about an hour to get autographs from Nimoy and Shatner because we weren't allowed to speak to them. However, the next day with George Takei, it took almost 3 hours to get to the front of the line, because George took such obvious pleasure in greeting everybody that came through. There's a lesson there, I think. Posted by: Karen at March 31, 2004 03:56 PMLemmy!! \m/ A fantastic read Wil. Good job! Posted by: C-DUB at March 31, 2004 04:00 PMwhy cant i read this? i try to DL it but it goes to a blank page. i sad Posted by: julie reppert at March 31, 2004 04:11 PMAwesome interview Wil! For the record, I prefer Sammy, my kids are about 10 years younger than yours and I'm a Republican so I guess that makes me one of those parents you hate to sit next to at your kid's sporting events...LOL Love ya anyway, hon, keep up the good work. Posted by: Lawless1 at March 31, 2004 04:11 PMWil, you like completely, totally, supercalifragilistically ROCK!!!! That interview was great. I've been a reader for a short time now (6 months...short compared to a lot of you out there) and I am so excited for you. The interview was great and it just seems like so much is falling in to place for you with your work. Whenever I tell anyone about your blog now it goes like this: "go check out this kick ass site, this is what it's like, this is what he believes in, etc etc.....oh and by the way, it's www.wilwheaton.net...yes that Wil Wheatons, yes he was in some movies, BUT he's a writer now and he's great and you have to check it out. I never think of it as "that guy who used to be an actor"......may the geek gods keep smiling on you and all of of us! Happy days!....Shannon Posted by: shanmc at March 31, 2004 04:11 PMGooglism for: wil wheaton wil wheaton is still more loved hey wil, YEY! The interview was very good. The pictures were great. Wil always comes across so open and honest. I am turning in to a bigger and bigger fan every day. Posted by: Veronica at March 31, 2004 05:37 PMOk, you're right. I'll give you the Time Travel Feat with AC bonus. Plus at that point you've got all that Star Fleet Training. I recently watched the Season 2 DVDs so I guess I was stuck in the "Guinan, tell me about girls" version of Wesley. Now I'm really done. I swear. :) (Ok, well, maybe there's a 4d20+12 percent chance I'm done.) Posted by: Jon at March 31, 2004 06:10 PMThat was an awesome, awesome interview! I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. :) Just one nitpick, though. It's Nichelle, not Michelle (hey! SOMEBODY's gotta confess to being a Trekkie Geek!). *grin* I'm sure that's just a typo, not a mispronounciation on your part, Wil, but I just thought I'd point it out, in case it's something easily corrected by the editors over there. ;) Posted by: Wendi W. at March 31, 2004 07:03 PMHey Wil! The coolest thing about the interview was realizing that when you mentioned the cigars, the poker game, Hooters, I knew just what you were talking about because you'd already told me. (Well, me and tens of thousands of others.) But, it really made me feel like...well, like a friend of yours because I get to share in a small part of your life. Very cool experience! Thanks for a great weblog! Tracey Weiss in Santee, California Posted by: Tracey Weiss at March 31, 2004 07:36 PMGreat interview Wil! I didn't see as many "like" or "umms" as some people i know(that live in the mid-west, yeah we all wanna be like cool people from california ^_^), so take heart that if you were from Ohio or Penn, etc.. it would be worse ^_^ That magizine is great too, "thanks WWdN!!!" for turning me one to it. Wil, your wildfire popularity is spreading. Congrats. Great interview... right up until they misspelled Guinness... grrrr. That's punishable by death in some countries, you know. It's not? Well, it should be. Seriously, though, that was a fun read. Posted by: CDL at March 31, 2004 09:21 PMLike, awesome, dude! That was a fantastic interview, and I actually really liked the 'natural speech' style of report. You did well, I would have 'umm'ed and 'ah'd my way through almost the entire thing but your spoken word is almost as eloquent as your edited, written word. You're all, like, talent! Michelle/Nichelle - Fixed Any more? ;-) Enjoy, Hey Will, Very COOL interview, Wil!! Posted by: Dierdra at April 1, 2004 08:56 AMGreat interview Wil, you the man. Posted by: Peter at April 1, 2004 11:08 AMHi Wil, First time commenter, long time reader...seriously, I've become addicted to your BLOG...and I really enjoyed the article on you. I found a lot of the background stuff interesting. It was made even more surreal (for me at least) as I read it after I watched VH1's "I Love the 80s" 1986 - which showed Stand By My clips. One of my favorite movies. I'll quit being FANBOY - happy for all of your success. Peace. Posted by: Stuart at April 1, 2004 11:18 AMo.O Wow. I think that's the first time that a comment I've made online has ever actually made a difference. Rawk! \m/ Posted by: Wendi W. at April 1, 2004 04:50 PMI really liked that interview, I thought it was really cool. Oh and dude, I shop at Hot Topic and so does like...everyone I know. It's okay. Plus, when the choice is going on the freeway to shop at a cooler store or going to Hot Topic...I think anyone who has been on the LA freeway forgives you. Oh Wil Wheaton, Really Love the Smiths References!!!! Do you know Morrissey Personally? Can't wait for the new Album & Tour!!!!!! Posted by: KenB at April 2, 2004 01:33 PMgreat WIL WHEATON interview!...much more detail and life to it than those i've read in the print media...as for the valley accent...that's the one i hear when i read you here at WWDN...no shame.
