Research Help

Question for the Brain Trust:

In 1989, I was on this thing called SeaTrek, that sailed out of Florida.

I really need to know what city we sailed from, and I can't find a damn thing about it on Google, other than the SeaTrek hompage. (The only thing I found there was this photographic evidence of what a complete tool I was.)

I'm hoping that someone who reads this will know someone who knows someone who remembers where and when we set sail.

Can anybody give me a little help?

Update: In the comments, Joe pointed me to an old UseNet post, identifying the port as Miami. Thanks, Joe!

The link to the photographic evidence of what a complete tool you were doesn't work...

Wil: Found this. Maybe it will help?

http://www.slayercruise.com/

They claim to be the originators of the SeaTrek cruises...maybe an email to them could help.

Later,

KC

According to this 1989 Usenet post: http://groups.google.com/groups?q=Seatrek&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&c2coff=1&as_drrb=b&as_mind=12&as_minm=5&as_miny=1981&as_maxd=5&as_maxm=4&as_maxy=1990&selm=27801%40apple.Apple.COM&rnum=1

it was Miami.

Live to serve.

Posted by: Joe Coughlin at April 5, 2004 06:32 PM

Holy Shit, Joe. That was fast!

I couldn't remember if it was Ft. Lauderdale, or Miami. After all the years, the events have all blurred together, you know?

I searched Google Groups, but I searched for "SeaTrek Brittanis" (which was what I thought the ship was called. Turns out it was the Emerald Seas.)

Anyway, Thanks, man! Here's a pizza and a trophy.

:)

That poster shows the exact dates of the cruise as well.

Man, Wil, you're the luckiest writer in the world. Usually when people write autobiographical stuff, they have to remember what happened to them instead of having a few thousand readers help them out. ;)

/Looking forward to reading JAG

Thanks for the thanks.

To Joe Coughlin
Re your comment "live to serve"
Any chance are you a fan of Lois Bujold McMaster's Vorkosigan series? Highly recommended. Incredible writer.

Posted by: Eva at April 5, 2004 07:39 PM

No, I'm afraid I'm not familiar with that series, Eva. But I'll be sure to look it up one of these days. Thankee.

Nice legs there, Wil!!

Posted by: rani at April 5, 2004 09:13 PM

This is why no one likes to remember the eighties. Everyone has an embaressing picture, or two, three, oh hell, hundreds in my case.

Posted by: angry penguin at April 5, 2004 09:28 PM

are those pink jandals/flipflops/sandals you're wearing?

yes, you _were_ a complete tool. Not any more though.

Posted by: Pete at April 5, 2004 09:49 PM

*ahem*

I believe they were called "flojos."

At least you can't see the "PARTY NAKED" T-shirt I was wearing.

Yeah. Because, you know . . . when you're 16, girls really respond to that sort of thing.

Except they don't.

Posted by: wil at April 5, 2004 10:42 PM

Hey, I had a crush on that tool!

Does that make me a tool crusher? Or a Crusher crusher...tool...

I'm going to shut up now.

Posted by: Sarah at April 5, 2004 10:49 PM

MWAHAHAHAHA!!! sarah you funneh!! i did too!! bless....

i can't believe that was so long ago i must have been like what... 6??? WTF?!!

Anyhoo... Wil you rawk... you really do! Tool Pics and all!

Posted by: andrea at April 5, 2004 11:48 PM

Ah! I have a picture of Denise and Wil on stage somewhere at home, and it blatantly was at this cruise.
Bless ya, Wil. I am soooooo glad I was too poor for fashion in the 80s.

Posted by: Patty at April 5, 2004 11:56 PM

Hey, anyone can wear a dumb tee-shirt or two (ask my wife, she thinks all mine are dumb) but you're sitting pretty there with Denise Crosby and/or Marina Sirtis - I could change places with that tool, y'know (I'd even wear the tee). Cheers, Wil and thanks for your words - they're gold!

Posted by: mark at April 6, 2004 12:36 AM

I can't tell in the photos, but are you wearing jams? That would really complete the ensemble. Wait, this was in the 90s, right? I guess that was too late for jams. It's only right to be wearing embarrassing clothes when you look back at photos from your youth, though. My own "wow-how-the-chicks-will-dig-me" shirt was an "Amateur Shark Hunter" shirt with a big, bloody hole torn out of the side. I thought it made me look edgy.

If you're looking for more pictures from SeaTrek, I can probably dig some up, both from the Emerald Seas (Miami) and the Azure Seas (LA) 1988 SeaTrek.

I think I have one of Wil doing the limbo :-)

Posted by: Mike at April 6, 2004 07:24 AM

You think you are a tool, eh? I can only imagine the tools who actually paid for a "sci-fi" cruise!
SeaTrek. Now I've heard everything! lol.
It leaves a picture of "iZac" the bartender.

Wil, at what age DO the ladies respond to that sorta thing? I have a whole line of "Party Nekkid'" clothing that I'm dying to bust out.

Is that Charles Nelson Riley in the back row? :)

I was one of the "tools" who paid for a Trek cruise, in 2002, and I had a blast. (It was with Cruise Trek rather than SeaTrek.) All of the people, fans and Trek guests alike, were friendly, intelligent, and only a few degrees above the norm in geekiness. :-) I seem to recall Wil having said that he has enjoyed a couple of the Trek cruises he has done. Don't knock it till you've tried it.

Posted by: Dave Westbay at April 6, 2004 10:13 AM

Wil, you think YOU'RE the tool in that picture? :)

Posted by: Aaron at April 6, 2004 10:22 AM

Dude--you have Denise Crosby leaning on your shoulder (or at least it looks like it). None of us (males anyway) have anything to say to that, hat or no, except that we're terribly jealous.

And you're right--out of the photos from the various cruises, George consistently looks like he's genuinely having a great time.

Posted by: Craig Steffen at April 6, 2004 11:00 AM

Wil's rockin' the porkpie hat...aww yeah. \m/

Suddenly, I'm thankful that no pictures of me in my very awkward teen years are readily available on the Internet.

Posted by: Winona at April 6, 2004 11:42 AM

Awww, such a cutie in those pics Wil! And just to be fair to you, I think we should all submit one geeky pic from either the 80's or our teen years. In my case, I could submit one pic that would cover BOTH time periods!

Posted by: Lawless1 at April 6, 2004 12:30 PM

I've had an old Star Trek book with a picture of you wearing that Party Naked T-shirt for years now! Plus you're drinking a margherita I think and wearing a baseball hat.

Posted by: emily at April 6, 2004 12:34 PM

Dave,
My post came out sounding more insulting than I meant it to. Sorry about that. I really didn't mean to imply that ALL the people on the cruise were Tools... Just the ones with Vulcan ears glued on out sunning themselves with a Hawaiian shirt on. lol.
I was left with a mental picture of the Simpson's Comic Book Guy out playing shuffleboard complaining that the cruise doesn't have jamaharon like they do on Risa.
I can't stop thinking of that Futurama with "iZac" the bartender...lol. No offense meant to actual cruise goers...seriously.
:-)
Cheers!

Posted by: Wha? at April 6, 2004 02:06 PM

I'm not sure I'm linking right, but I found Wil kinda...well, not to put too fine a point on it..groping a pretty female fan. And, Wil, I understand the title "Just a Geek" now. Maybe your life's work could be destroying all 80s pics...you..me...Wham!...everyone else...

Let's see if this works: Gropin' Wil

Oh for pete's sake--he's not groping her.

Good portrait at the top of the page. What does "fac ut vivas" stand for? I'm guessing either "peace and long life" or "live long and prosper" in latin; probalby the former. Cool!

Posted by: Craig Steffen at April 6, 2004 02:31 PM

hmmm..the chessy grin, the hand reaching boobward...I'd say groping. Not that I blame you, Wil. As you say, "Party Naked, Dude."

Posted by: Peter at April 6, 2004 02:45 PM

Ok, reading between the lines, here's a guess.

Given that it's the first book he's writing for them (Dancing Barefoot was already written when the contracts were signed), Uncle Willy has received an extension on JAG from his utterly-kick-ass editors at O'Reily. He's finishing out some stuff on the manuscript, which is why 1) he's suddenly researching autobiographical details and 2) despite a huge build-up about the deadline, he hasn't written the "boy I'm glad that's over" post about getting it in.

So...here's to sending our guy a little writing mojo to get things finished up for his second book. [zewewewewewewewewewewewew...laser sound effects here].

Good luck Wil!

Posted by: Fashion Police at April 6, 2004 03:04 PM

Trekkies. On a cruise ship.
Where were the submarines with nuclear torpedoes that should have blasted this ridiculous concept out of the water?
Wil a tool? Yes, wholeheartedly.

Posted by: Abe Sapien at April 6, 2004 04:42 PM

Just a little piece of info for those who, like me, were teenagers in 1989, the kids born the same year of that cruise are a year away from their driver's license now. I'm gonna go bury my head....

Posted by: Natalie at April 6, 2004 05:16 PM

I just wanted to say I am another of those teenaged girls who had a serious crush on Wil when he was on ST. Wil, you were the reason why I watched the show! I would have let you grope me!

If i had had enough money at age 12, i certainly would have gone on SeaTek. I was one of the "I love Wesley" tools. Later, I became the (dare i say kinkier) "I love Data" tools.

Certainly, the 80s and early 90s are proud moments for no one, except perhaps Hasselhoff, who was and still is the greatest thing that ever happened to Germany.

Posted by: Ana at April 6, 2004 07:12 PM

Um, you were on the Seatrek in 1991, also. Does the battle of the bread ring any bells?

Properly, it means "create so that you may live."

And wow, if that's Denise Crosby, you have no idea how jealous I am.

Posted by: Todd at April 7, 2004 06:42 PM

Wil...

Are you wearing pink sandals? Or am I looking at the wrong person's legs?

Either way, that picture made my day.

Love Kaitlin

Posted by: kaitlin at April 11, 2004 11:34 PM

I think I may still have the old Starlog magazine issue that covered that particular SeaTrek. I remember reading about Denise Crosby taking a bunch of people to see one of the Pet Sematary films. If that's the one, and I can find the issue, I'd be glad to send it to you. I'm going through the whole house this coming weekend to prepare for next weekend's garage sale, so if I find it, I'll set it aside. Let me know if you want it.
