« the wonderful, wonderful cat. | Main | he has songs of wildebeests and angels » May 05, 2004he reaches into his bag of tricksI had a weird night last night. I kept waking up very suddenly, with my brain racing. It was different from the night terrors I used to have when I was younger, but the same "OH MY GOD!" heart-pounding feeling was still there, just absent the white hot blinding fear that the terrors used to bring. So that's a long way if saying that I've been really tired all day. I think I'm also a little emotionally drained, as well, with the uncertainty about Felix (even though all the signs currently point in a positive direction). Speaking of Felix . . . I saw him this morning, and the vet, and all the techs at the hospital all told me how talkative he had been, and how eager he was to come home. He continued to "eat like a pig" they said (he ate almost an entire 5.5 ounce can of food this morning) and he was even eating fish, which he's always hated. There was another cat in the space next to The Bear, and I guess the two of them had been talking to each other since yesterday. I think I may have seen a copy of Escape from AlCATraz -- with feline subtitles, of course -- behind Felix's litter box. The vet told me that it was really clear that our visits were helping him, and she said the he really settled down when we took his little fleece bed there for him to sleep in so he didn't have to sleep on a towel. She said that he's made so much progress with the fluids and medication, that he could come home today! So at 4:30, I picked him up, and right now he's laying on the floor behind me, giving himself a bath. He wants me to tell everyone, "Hi. ThiS iS FELix. My Mom AND Dad ToLD mE HoW MUCh WWDN ReADerS SupPoRteD ThEM whiLe I wAs SiCK, aND i WaNT to sAY ThANK you. ThEy LovE ME A loT AnD I KnOW THIS Was hard FoR thEM." I want to say thank you again, too, and so do Anne and the boys. Felix will get sub-q fluids every day, and we're also giving him aluminum hydroxide twice a day in his food to help take some stress off his kidneys. I'm doing everything I can to keep him comfy, too, and I ordered him some Kitty Hooch, because he loves it so much. The next 48 hours are going to be very important. If he doesn't slip back to pre-hospital condition, we're going to be okay for a while. If he worsens, we'll have to give serious consideration to putting him to sleep. We're clearly not out of the woods, yet, so if you've got an extra thought to spare, we'll take it. Oh, and to tie up a loose end from yesterday, my audition went really well. I read for three different characters, nailed one of them, blew it on another, and did fairly well with the last one. But I REALLY had fun with the characters, and also recorded an audio blog that made me laugh. Update: I just got off the phone with our vet. The lab results came back, and they're not as good as we'd hoped. his levels came down a little bit, but not nearly as much as we were hoping for. She said that she uses the lab results as a guide, and really lets the cat tell us what he needs, but when I asked her if it was positive, negative, or neutral, she didn't really want to say . . . so I think it may be more negative than we'd like. He's going to get re-checked in two weeks, and we'll have a very clear picture then. I'm trying to remain hopeful, but I also have to prepare myself for the very worst. Cherish this time you have with Felix, no matter how much time he's got left. We had the good fortune of having a few weeks heads-up when our old guy got sick. Although letting him go "back to the cosmos" was tough and painful (and we both stayed in the room with him until he was gone and then cried like babies afterwards), we knew we did the right thing by him. So, give Felix a scritch for us, too. Posted by: spacewriter at May 5, 2004 06:44 PMMuch good mojo and happy thoughts coming to Felix from fellow felines Misty and Charlie and dog Max. You'll know when it's the right time to make 'that' decision. I've gone through that twice now, and while the aftermath is horrible, the decision itself seems natural and loving. But having lost as many furpeople as I have over the years, one just a couple of months ago...well, sometimes preparing for what we hope WON'T happen is a smart thing. At least you know--and Felix knows--you gave him a warm place to call home, and as much attention, care and love as it was possible to give. Enjoy the time you have with him, whether it's weeks or years (and I SO hope it's the latter!). My best to you all-- Syd Posted by: Syd at May 5, 2004 07:32 PMIs that Felix in the picture on the left-hand column?? He looks identical to our neighbors' cat. I did a double take for a moment!! He sounds like a strong cat who's loved dearly. My thoughts and prayers will stay with you all throughout the coming weeks. Posted by: Sigerson at May 5, 2004 07:59 PMGlad to hear Felix is home! Have you considered a raw diet approach for him? I've had two cats go through CRF in the past, and while it's a harrowing experience, they did wonderfully once we took them off the prescription renal diet food. BUN and creatinine both came down quite a bit within a couple of weeks. http://www.holisticat.com/ is probably the single best reference site I've found for CRF and raw diet in cats, and http://www.felinecrf.org/ is another site I've found useful in the past for more general CRF related info. You'll definitely want to consult with your vet, though, before converting to raw food if you do go that route, since protein and phosphorous levels need to be adjusted significantly for CRF cats. Posted by: Molly at May 5, 2004 08:01 PMWil and Anne - you have some quality support here at WWdN. And Felix has more mojo en route than prolly any cat in the history of the world. You got my extended family chipping in, too - so chalk up good cat Mojo from Skitters and the Skittens (Thought and Memory), plus Saul (the 'good' dog) and Buster (the 'bad' -from a cat PoV dog). Heck, I bet even Beej and Tweeters will support a cat that resides nearly 800 miles away - they just don't like the ones who live in the same house :). No vote from the fish, but they tend to live in their own world anyway :) Posted by: John Doty at May 5, 2004 08:05 PMMojo out to Felix (sounds funny saying it to me, because Mojo is the name of my youngest cat!). I know what you are going through, Wil, and I know how "not fun" it is. We had to put a friend of ours of many many years down right at the end of last year, and it was a very tough decision to make. We tried a lot of things, but the years were getting the better of him, and it was simply time. It was especially tough, because he didn't seem to be suffering too much, but his body was failing him. So I really hope things work out with Felix. He sounds like a great friend. Posted by: Dan Gross at May 5, 2004 08:06 PMI'm not sure if you've seen this yet, or if you'll think it's funny, but hopefully, you'll appreciate it. I am so happy Felix is home where he can be more comfortable. mucho mojo el gato! :) Posted by: wendy at May 5, 2004 08:34 PMI'm not trying to start a flamewar here, really, but... Swan, have you ever seen a cat go through renal failure? At the end stage they lose weight, have no quality of life, they're listless, no appetite, ect. In short, they're suffering! (Sorry if this upsets you, Wil. Not my intent) A good owner who truley loves their pet is willing to make the selfless decision to end that animal's pain. It is one of the most brave and loving things I've ever witnessed. Unfortunately, I go through it too often, but every time someone requests that I stay with them during their friend's crossing of the rainbow bridge, I consider it a great honor. Sorry if this sounds cheezy or overly emotional, but it's how I (and many others in my profession) feel. To hear anyone make it sound like a cold and unemotional decision, i.e. killing your cat because it's just sick, really pisses me off. I'm guessing you've never had to make such a tough decision, Swan. Consider yourself lucky. Sorry for the blog-jack. We (I and two pussycats) send you the very best good luck and good health wishes. We've been burning Indian incense and catnip for you. We're even going to try meowing at the moon. We're hippie cats! We love you Felix. We love you too Wheaton. Demian, Zenobia, & Spats Posted by: Demian at May 5, 2004 08:39 PMWil, Several things went through my mind when I read about your 'brain racing' symptom waking you up. There could be several reasons for this happening, probably all related to stress and nutrition and possibly some unresolved issues you may have facing death or the death of loved ones. It seems that all adults in one way or another have to start dealing head on with death issues in their 30s. Seems it is now happening to you, too. I wish you well, and hope that your meditation garden is finished soon. Quiet time is an important portion of all our healthy daily lives. I hope you find some soon. Even if it is to read a book for 30 minutes of selfish enjoyment. Posted by: Dornar at May 5, 2004 08:50 PMThey say that pets are psychicly bonded to their parents, and that we really adopt them as familiars to guide us through our lives. Our love for them is an intense presence of our bond with the Earth, and with all the things we love. As such, everything they do and every way they effect us is a way for us to learn and grow, and as a reward, we do our best to make their lives contented ones filled with love. I think our pet knows, also, when it's time to move on, and why it's time, and that this is one of the harder but most important lessons they leave us with. So I hope that if Felix does move further away from you, you will, in time, find the memory of him and the many lessons he taught you to be some of the most valuable things you've ever possessed. And also, if and when the time comes, I'll pass on some mental messages to my cat Brutus that he's got a friend coming to visit. Posted by: Eric at May 6, 2004 02:25 AMOh, Wil, my heart is breaking for you right now. I know how hard it is to go through what you're going through. I just lost one of my beloved kitties about six weeks ago to heart failure and currently have a very sick kitty that is still in the diagnosis state. The big thing I've learned from this is to cherish every moment you get with them and make sure that they always know they're loved. That, in addition to keeping them comfortable, seems to be the best you can do. I have several kitties here, along with a few humans and some other furry, feathered, and shelled buddies that are sending all of the positive energy we can in your and your family's direction. You're in our thoughts. Take care. Posted by: Gayla at May 6, 2004 03:56 AMI'll keep my fingers crossed (making it hard to type today) for you guys. *hugs* to Felix. (Probably nothing you've not heard a hundred times before, but I dunno how well your spam filter works, and my email is on a free service...) Regards, Hey Wil- I'm sorry about your kitty. I hope he gets better. My kitty has genetic problems and has been sick his whole life. Medication has helped, but I think he's getting to the point where we don't have much time left. We can SAY we're preparing for the worst, but really, there's never any way to prepare for the death of someone you love. I hope your kitty turns things around and ends up having lots of happy years left with you. Posted by: Dee at May 6, 2004 06:12 AMHey it is good to hear that he is finally home with you all again. Posted by: John B at May 6, 2004 07:17 AMOK, a few things. First, Felix dude, soak up the mojo. Your staff know you don't live as long as them, and they're prepared for you to leave one day. But be well for every day you're here. Soak up the mojo and be well! I had a cat that was actually named Mojo. She eventually left us after a couple of years of having cancer. She was healthy through it all until the last month or two. Know that your staff will do everything they can to help you. Second, crapflodders. I assume these folks are putting messages in the comments here? I haven't seen any of them personally. But my kitty, Eccles, who wrote Felix a comment in Catese, has his own email address. He received his first spam email a few hours after posting here. So I guess email harvesting is also happening. I erased it, but should have kept it to track down who it came from. Next time. Wil, dude! You called someone a jackass in your audio blog. I'm hoping it was a fictional dramatic aside. Hi Wil, I'm so glad to hear the bear feels better, I remember this yo-yo time of the disease, I know how hard it is to tell if you're doing the right thing. I think you'll know when it's time to put him to sleep. I didn't do it with my first cat, and now I wish I had because the end was so very sad. Now I think I should have done it around the time when he started even refusing special table scraps that he used to adore, like tuna and chicken. That should have told me then and there it was time, since you'd have to really hate life as a cat to not want tuna. I hope he continues to feel better for as long as he can, and I still encourage you to check out Homeopathic vets as an additional treatment- it might buy you a little more "quality" time out of the time you've got left. *hugs* to you and your family and Felix! -Sahra Posted by: Sahra at May 6, 2004 08:05 AMHi Will and Anne, I just wanted to lend my support again for Felix and your family. Your situation is so similar and heartbreaking. I have never had to put a pet down and I am not at all prepared for it. I know it is inevitable but like yourself I just want my Gizmo to have the best life and all the love in world before he goes. I know it sounds awful, but sometimes I wish he would just pass peacefully in his sleep so I wouldn’t have to make the decision myself. Although I agree with the posts that we as pet parents should not let our babies suffer in pain, I do want to extend some hope to you. So far since January, my cat Gizmo has done remarkably well on his sub-Q fluids and his Epogen. We have had him for 6 years but our vets all think he’s about 16-18 years old. Anyway, even though his creatinine still hovers around 6 and his BUN is around 65, he still leads a very happy life. I don't know what Felix's creatinine and BUN are but in January Gizmo's was 13 and 145, respectively. He is super skinny now. He used to weigh about 14 lbs and now he only weighs 6.5, but his purr box still works and he still loves to cuddle. Each night when we go to bed, he nudges his head under our covers and sleeps tucked under my arm and we just hug each other all night. That is the absolute best feeling. I will miss that the most. I have been thrilled that he has made it this far. When he had his blindness scare last month, I was frantic. I had to take him to the kitty ophthalmologist and then back to his kidney specialist. His health has become a source of conversation and ribbing from all of our friends, most of whom think we are nuts for keeping him going and spending so much money in the process. Of course they are not pet lovers as we are. It becomes comical at times even for us. Who takes their cat to the ophthalmologist? We have to laugh at ourselves. Growing up my pets were lucky to live to the ripe old age of eight. But the point is nothing is more important than family. Having pets is the absolute best feeling. They never complain and are always there to warm your heart. I am so happy to hear Felix is home. I am sure he is even happier. Lots of purrs, barks and blessings from our family to yours. Amy :-) Hope your kitty improves! Just listened to your audio blog.... Lab tests can be wrong and what's "negative" for another cat might be "just right" for Felix. Vice versa is always true as well, so just listen to him. I've had to make the hard decsion before, and I feel like each time I made the "right" one for my cat. Both joyous and heartbreaking. We just defied our vet on our kitten's heart condition only to find that she's fine now. And we lost one last year that the vet said might hang on a while. Felix will tell you if he's here to stay or not. The most important thing is just to keep loving him. Posted by: sassy at May 6, 2004 08:44 AMFelix, Meow meow meow. This morning, Felix was racing around our bedroom, happily flicking his little stump, and following Anne around the house talking to her the whole time. He looks like he's putting back on some weight, and he devoured his breakfast this morning, too! In his eyes, he really looks like his old self. I can't help but brace myself a little bit . . . but I'm very hopeful. At least for now, he's doing great. Posted by: wil at May 6, 2004 10:30 AMHey Wil, I just want to say that I will continue to keep Felix and your family in my thoughts and prayers. Posted by: Winona at May 6, 2004 11:40 AMThose little fuzzies get really close to our hearts don't they. I have almost lost my Polka Dot a couple of times. I have been lucky so far. He is the most wonderful cat ever. We have our ups and downs but that is always true of everything. I have not had as many problems with Socks. I hope that things improve for your Felix so that you may have him for a little while longer. Hugs and support. Beth Posted by: Beth Rose Pizana at May 6, 2004 11:42 AMWell, this might seem a bit odd coming from a blogger who is likely to be your polar opposite on all manner of issues foreign and domestic (yup - I'm one of those scary Right-wing religious zealots), but I wanted to let you know that I sincerely hope that Felix gets healed up, and that you and your beautiful family are graced with his presence for years to come. It's pretty remarkable how much Felix reminds me of our cat Calvin (same exact color scheme, same 'tude, etc.). It'd kill me to lose him, though I've lost several dogs and cats through the years. It always sucks. Wil, you seem like a genuinely decent guy, and I'm glad to have wandered onto your blog. My wife and I are praying for you guys. Best of luck in everything that's on your plate right now. Hope the audition results are everything you hope for. -Cheers. Chin up, and all that. Posted by: Jared at May 6, 2004 11:45 AMOh that sucks. I couldn't imagine if we had to put Joey (our cat) to sleep. He is our baby. We're about to add another baby to our family, but still, you can't replace a pet. I'll pray for Felix and keep ya'll in my thoughts. Posted by: Veronica Knight at May 6, 2004 11:46 AMYou get the feeling that in any intellectual contest between Felix and Josef the cat would have to spot the dweeb 2,000 points to make it even? OTOH, it is porn spam, but God, is it funny porn spam. Posted by: Alan Kellogg at May 6, 2004 11:50 AMHey Felix, Thinking of you, buddy. And your family too. Hang in there. I'm rather quite proficient technically... but I've never delved into the inner workings of the net, IP addresses, etc. But after reading that immature twit's posting... I wanna know how to use "141.209.210.219" and help him receive the appropriate karma that he so completely deserves. Someone, please post a little how-to or link to one for me. Thanks much Posted by: edwood at May 6, 2004 12:13 PMStill thinking good thoughts for Felix aka Bear. I'm sure he knows that his people love him very much. Star and Maui send their regards as well. Posted by: Jim King at May 6, 2004 12:26 PMTo look up an IP address and see where it leads you, you can visit http://www.arin.net. That'll handle North American IPs, anyway. An even better option is to check Geobytes (http://www.geobytes.com/IpLocator.htm). 141.209.210.219 is actually from Central Michigan University, if you look it up. (Mt Pleasant, MI, according to Geobytes.) Who knows if the douchebag is actually there or not. If the IPs are logged, Wil might be able to get the police involved, especially if there are a bunch from the same area. After all, it is harassment. Since the last flood involved links to kiddie porn, there's stronger incentive; at the very least, if there are any lawyers kicking around, you may be able to use the logs as sufficient evidence to open a lawsuit and force the ISP to disclose the identity of the person to whom that IP has been assigned. Of course, that's assuming that the person who has that IP is the one posting crap; it could be a computer compromised by a cracker. Posted by: Chris Salter at May 6, 2004 12:31 PMOh, wil, if you have a list of IPs where this crap's been coming from, feel free to email me a copy. I can do at least basic investigation for you. I don't really know how to hunt these punks down, but I can at least do some basic research for you, maybe give you something to go on. Posted by: Chris Salter at May 6, 2004 12:37 PM*goodvibesgoodvibesgoodvibes* ...and some major mojo.... Stay positive, stay strong and know you all have all our best thoughts, wishes, and love. I'm still sending healing mojo to Kris and to Felix, and I'll throw what I've got left towards you and the family as well, to help you through the horrible experience of a very very sick kitty, the spammers, and the weird night awakenings. My wonderful, best friend-like dog had to be put to sleep last february because she got cancer. She kept getting tumors, and even with 2 operations and chemo therapy, nothing would stop them. Witnessing the suffering of a wonderful companion like this is tough...I just wanted to say that I have been there too, and hopefully you can take some comfort in it. I sincerely hope that your cat gets better and lives for a long time. In the meantime, give it some extra attention and love, and value every moment with it. -Jim Posted by: Jimmy at May 7, 2004 04:10 AMWil, I know that this is number 130 something and you probably won't see it, but... When I was 16 I got the most wonderful cat I am ever to have. When he was about 2-years-old he got VERY sick, something with his bladder and kidneys. I went to see him on day 2 and the vet told me that I should seriously prepare myself for him to die. I spent some time with him at the vet and cleaned out his cage, added a few personal touches and told him I loved him and to get better. The next day the vet called to tell me that my cat was ready to come home, he was completely better! So never understestimate the power of your love for Felix. My handsome old man finally had to be put to sleep this past February, he was 15 years old. The vet had told me he probably would never live that long after his illness. While I miss him horribly, I am grateful for all 15 years that I got with him. My point is, keep holding onto hope, I think the power of your love can do wonders, especially as it sounds like Felix is just as much in love with you. Will look forward to updates and will pray for a happy outcome. Posted by: Michelle at May 7, 2004 05:43 AMJust wanted to say sorry about poor Felix. I've had many sick animals and I feel your pain. Posted by: Gil at May 8, 2004 08:01 AMMy cat Rocco is a Ben-Gay junkie....he LOVES it Glad Felix is doing better. I'm not much of a cat person but I somehow have 3 cats in my livingroom. I never disliked cats, I've just been more of a dog lover. These cats that live in my house are now part of my little family. The three are named Nina (the mom), Bignose (a little on the stupid side), and Fluffy (cliche I know but he's like a wolf). Fluffy would be my favorite out of the three. He's always hungry, he's never awake for more than an hour at a time, and he lives the life that we all aspire to live. Carefree and always happy is what Fluffy is and I love him to death. I hope Felix stays better Wil. Love and attention is the best for him right now. Posted by: jebryo at May 8, 2004 12:37 PMI hope your cat will heal. Posted by: Ingram at May 9, 2004 11:06 AMI know the feeling of anxiety having your pet in the vet, I went through that about 4 days ago but unfortunately my cat wasn't able to leave as we had to put him down. Posted by: Jeremy at May 10, 2004 12:54 AMStill sending good thoughts for Felix your way... Posted by: :: jozjozjoz :: at May 10, 2004 07:33 AMOh, I'm SO SORRY to hear about your cat. I'm almost in tears about it, actually. I lost my 16 year old cat to kidney failure in January. Just don't wait too long to make the call if he is really sick. That is my best advice to you. I waited a little too long to put my poor kitty out of his misery and it'll haunt me always. My Dickens was much sicker than I realized and I'm sure he was very uncomfortable. Once they exhibit symptoms like your cat is showing, I'm sorry to say it, but it's pretty much a done deal. I'm really sorry for you and your kitty. :-( Good luck and take care.
