« he has songs of wildebeests and angels | Main | blessing of spring » May 09, 2004ruby vroomNolan walked over to my desk and tapped me on the shoulder. I turned around in my chair and looked into his cheshire grin. "What are you doing?" I said. "Oh . . . I just saw something I thought you may be interested in." I noticed that he had one hand behind his back. "It wouldn't be related to what you have behind your back, would it?" His grin got bigger, and he revealed People magazine. Jennifer Aniston was on the cover -- apparently she's one of the 50 most beautiful people in the world. "I don't want to burst his bubble and tell him that I'm not all that excited about her," I thought, "But I don't want to lie to him, either. Crap! It's a Parenting Challenge. What do I do?" "Nolan, I --" He opened the magzine and revealed a two-page ad for the new Ford GT. It was my favorite car at the entire LA Auto Show when we went a few months ago. He gingerly set it down on my desk. "I think I'll leave you two alone," he said, and patted my knee before he left. He managed to contain his giggles until he was just outside the door. Comments
It's sad when you reach the age that cars are more interesting than beautiful, unattainable women. But it's nice that Nolan knows you so well . . . Posted by: Andrew at May 9, 2004 08:48 PMHee hee! A grin and a pat on the knee! The relationship you have with him is just adorable! Posted by: RomyNo1 at May 9, 2004 08:52 PMMakes me almost want to be a dad some day.. Posted by: Anders at May 9, 2004 09:00 PMlol, i thought only my kids did things like that :) Ooooooooooooooooh a family moment. So are you really related to Jennifer Aniston. If so i think we are related. Posted by: Terry at May 9, 2004 09:12 PM*raises eyebrows* Not interested in Jennifer Aniston. Isn't that a sin or something? That's like saying you don't think Beyonce's tush is the greatest thing since toilet paper. I like the new Ford GT too by the way. P.S. Your sons are so cute. Posted by: Veronica Knight at May 9, 2004 09:22 PMI didn't think anyone but my s/o and I had ever listened to Soul Coughing. I love cute kid anecdotes. :) Posted by: classics_cat at May 9, 2004 09:23 PMKids are the greatest thing in all the world. My god that kid is clever! *snort* Very cool, Wil... We seem to agree on quite a few things... Aniston: 0 Ford GT: 1 Woohoo!!! *8D What did that have to do with Soul Coughing? Posted by: Nastassja at May 9, 2004 09:50 PM:D That's Awesome! I'd give Nolan a high-five if I were there, what an awesome kid! Posted by: Erin at May 9, 2004 09:51 PM*lol* That's awesome. You can just picture it perfectly. I was babysitting recently when I said "Oh, it's almost 6:30" and the little boy turned in a panic & asked "Is it 6 - 7 central??" Seriously. Kids rule. Posted by: ~Another~ Red at May 9, 2004 09:57 PMSoul Coughing was one of the best bands to come out of 90's and New York. Ruby Vroom is the name of one of their albums. Posted by: Patty at May 9, 2004 11:45 PMWhat is it with men and cars...???! Parenting is the greatest gift we can receive and it never stops tripping you up. LOL, that is so funny... reminds me of something similar my boyfriend did the other day. enter 1 copy of Arenea magazine, One oiled up scantily clad woman on one page, and a picture of the new version of my car (hot hatch), he was drooling over the car and said that the woman didn't deserve to press her body against the car, was sooo funny. Thanks for the laugh, Wil -- that is *too* cute! :) Posted by: Beth at May 10, 2004 04:35 AMLuckily I got to see Soul Coughing before they bided adieu to each other. Now if they would stop their internal bickering, they could pop out a live album. El Oso was their best. Oh, and great story too. Posted by: Lucas at May 10, 2004 05:21 AMIs your entire family screwed up, or afflicted with the humor bug, or what? Between you, Anne, and now Nolan, I don't whether to laugh or fear for the collective sanity of your household! Just kidding. That was priceless. Posted by: David B at May 10, 2004 05:34 AMSorry dude, but Nolan's learned to play you. :-) And yes, that GT is totally awesome. Way better than Jennifer Aniston. Posted by: Chris Salter at May 10, 2004 05:41 AMDang, I thought maybe Jennifer Aniston was wearing a WWdN tee shirt or something. A car? Feh! Posted by: Todd at May 10, 2004 06:12 AMWell that just brightened my day up. Nolan is so cute!!! Happy Mothers Day to all mothers, past, present and future. Do you guys have a fathers day? In the UK we have it sometime is June, I was wondering if any other countries celebrate fathers as well. Posted by: Spike at May 10, 2004 06:16 AMI thought I was the only one who listened to Soul Coughing :) I guess "Is Chicago, Is Not Chicago" is permanently banned from all radio stations now, but I still think it's a great song. Kids, what they do for their parents and yes Wil you might be a step-father,but you're still a dad. I think those are the luckiest kids in the world to have you as their (step) DAD! Soul Coughing shout-out and a touching guy moment. Hee! My day is made. Here's a question: Who would make the cut on "Wil Wheaton's Ten Hottest Ladies of All Time" list? And you can't say Anne cause that's too easy. Posted by: Selannia at May 10, 2004 07:03 AMDude...pwnz0red by your own son. You must be so proud. =) That remark was just absolutely perfect. My husband is the same way. By the way, how is your cat? I hope he's doing okay. My parents' cat went through that a few years back (IV's and all). At least she got to go on vacation to Maine with us. We found a vet up there who would give her fluids. She actually had a grand time until about a week before she passed away. Ah, the joys of being married to a railfan... sigh Picked up Cory Doctorow's Essential Blogging this weekend; first chapter he refers to various blogs, and calls you a "geek hero". Gave me a bit of a chuckle. :) Happy belated Mommy's Day to Anne!
Smart kid - he knows that the car will never break his heart. His bank, maybe. Wait til he gets his "electronics" bug, and decides to see how funny it is to wire a radio transformer to the doorknob. Watch out -- that kid's gonna steal your stand-up career! Posted by: Joshua at May 10, 2004 10:18 AMwow, ya, my 11 year-old cousin and i were watching TV one day and Family Guy comes on, so i get all excited. we're watching the credits and he says, "Is this show age appropriate?" ah the kids of today... age appropriate??!! Just turn your blog into a sitcom ;-) i think NOLAN would really like for you to get that car...i know i always wanted my dad to get a cool car...we'd get the brochures in the mail and i'd be rattling off the cool things about each car...the automobile...a bridge to the heavier conversations you'll have with him in the future. Posted by: d, burr at May 10, 2004 11:31 AMhhhmmm - You could take out a second mortgage on the house - I'm sure Anne wouldn't mind :) Posted by: Mel at May 10, 2004 11:31 AMI might not have anyone beat in the music geek department, but I have practically everyone beat in the Soul Coughing geek department (and I mean geek - I've used moonsammy as an online nick for at least 6 years). Saw them live 4 times plus M Doughty solo 4 times (and I don't live in NY), have at least 8 live shows in mp3 format, and every rarity / b side that has been available online in any format that I'm aware of (though Mat at SCUG has a few song clips available that I've never found the full versions for). I even went back and mp3'd a tape I had with M Doughty doing some readings from his poetry book Slanky live on Rev105 back in '94 or so. I'm perfectly happy to share anything that isn't commercially available, some of their non-album stuff *really* deserved wider dissemination (email me - mikeUNDERSCOREpaquetteATyahooDOTcom). Clearly, you've been rubbing off on him. Posted by: Sarah at May 10, 2004 02:44 PMHello old man! I'm posting on your website for the first time and I have a itch that needs scratching. What is the symbolism of the starship Enterprise to you? I'm doing a talk about Star trek in my art school Cal Arts since I like it quite alot and have decided to critique it in my art school. I'm starting off with TOS and the sym, bolism adn iconographic meaning of Enterprise, the Crew and the Klingons. Well, mainly I just want to poke and prod at the brains of these uberserious art kids whou think that Vito Acconci is a genius. (i beg to differ)
Simon st. Johns LOL! I almost thought that it was a blog on Soul Coughing. That Nolan is a card. You should definitely keep him. Posted by: justtra at May 10, 2004 03:05 PMWhat is it about the car, they ask? My memories of the original Ford GT are from HO-scale slot cars... and I had a 40-something Lincoln that blew the doors off every GT because it wss so heavy it couldn'tleave the track. Posted by: Tim at May 10, 2004 04:42 PMWil, The Ford GT is a pretty smooth car. I just got done looking at the official site. Not bad at all. Im an import fan however. Would take a Nissan Skyline GT-R Vspec over just about any car there is. Notice I said "just about". I like women just as much as any guy (even though im a chick) But I would rather look at the cars they are often perched upon. Cars a big thing with me and I think most of the time I would take the car rather than the chick. Heh, even if it was a guy perched on the hood I would still take the car. Lolz =)~. Im not biased, I like all kinds of cars, Im just more fond of imports when it comes to super tuned or radically modified cars. But my one and only true love will always be the Hummer, and the new H1 is bad ass. The H2 kind of sucks though =/. Whatever blows your hair back I suppose. =) HAVE A GOOD ONE!! ~*~Lotus~*~ Posted by: Lotus at May 10, 2004 05:27 PMVery very cute! Kind of adorable actually. What a funny kid!
