WWdN is on vacation . . .

I really wish I had that talking moose from Vacation to put here, or at least the ghost of John Candy. But since they're currently unavailable . . .

Anne and Nolan's birthdays are coming up, Ryan is out of Summer School, and I think I need to take some time away from the 'net and just be with them. You know . . . days at the beach, some geocaching, matinees at Arclight, maybe even an overnight camping trip. Something about Ryan turning 15 on Saturday, and Nolan's 13th coming up . . . they're getting older, and I don't want to miss out on anything before I become totally uncool.

I'm still going up to Powells Technical Annex on August 6th at 7:30 PM, and I'm sure I'll audblog and probably moblog the event, and maybe even some of the trip around it . . . but my laptop is going into the shop, (I'm blogging this on a tiny old 13 inch monitor that I dug out of the garage and attached to my Linux machine . . . man, I'd forgotten how much I love Linux!) and I'm going to do everything in my power to maintain a self-imposed Internet blackout and just be a husband and parent.

Hopefully, I'll return around August 14th with my mental kernel rebuilt, updated, and optimized, and some great family stories to tell.

(This entry dated August 10th to keep it on the front page of the site until I come back online.)

Posted by: Robin at August 2, 2004 08:54 PM

Enjoy your break -- you're blessed (in the non-religious way since I'm an atheist) to have such a cool family. Nice to see you taking advantage of it!

Posted by: Anders at August 2, 2004 09:03 PM

Awww... You'll be missed. I hope you enjoy your time with your family... Sounds like you all deserve it! :) Also, I'm glad to hear the scary medical crisis turned out to be ok. And remember, you'll always be totally cool to us, your fellow geeks!

Posted by: Kimberly at August 2, 2004 09:06 PM

dunno about you, but to my 13 year old relatives, I'm alrady totally uncool.

Oh, but I'm also uncool to my 30ish friends. Hmmm, a pattern?

it's be nice to have a summer vacation. Pity it's winter. Have fun

Posted by: wilful at August 2, 2004 09:07 PM

Just wanted to say that I LOVE geocaching! My sister and I found 12 this past Saturday, it's a blast.
Hope you enjoy your time off, and happy caching.

Posted by: Joy at August 2, 2004 09:19 PM

Enjoy your summer vacation! Tell Anne, Ryan, and Nolan "happy birthday!" Don't worry about us. We'll all be here when you get back. :^)

P.S.
I'm glad that your "family medical terror" is no more.

Posted by: clara at August 2, 2004 09:23 PM

Hope you have a well-deserved break, and happy birthday to Ryan!!

Posted by: Placebo Effect at August 2, 2004 09:26 PM

I think that is a great idea wil! I hope you have a wonderful time on your break. Everyone needs a break every now and then. Rest assured the internet will be here when you get back as will the monkeys. ;)

Have Fun!

And pass on Happy Birthday wishes to everyone.

Posted by: neph at August 2, 2004 09:27 PM

Posted by: Stinky at August 2, 2004 09:37 PM

Have a great time, Wil! We'll be waiting for new stories upon your return with bated breath.

Perhaps I'll obtain a copy of Just a Geek to occupy my time in the meanwhile...

Posted by: Chris the Tiki Guy at August 2, 2004 09:43 PM

You deserve to take the vacation, we'll be here when you get back. 15 and 13, wow. Enjoy, and for the record, I don't think my parents are uncool, at least most of the time. :) Have fun, and hopefully bring us some news on the audition part.

Posted by: angry penguin at August 2, 2004 09:51 PM

I just read the article in the back of this month's Dungeon, which is what appeared in your blog a while back. Take some time in your hiatus and play a session or two of D&D with your kids -- it'll feel cool. Oh, and buy them dicebags and go let them pick out ultra-cool crystal caste special dice for themselves.

HAVE FUN!

Posted by: Wendy at August 2, 2004 10:13 PM

NO! You must keep us entertained! just kidding..

Take the break and enjoy it! As fun as you made Vegas sound and as well as it turned out, it had to be draining too. Between the books, the blog, the cons, you needing a net break is understandable.

lucky though...your "summer break" is starting and mine just ended.

Hope you don't get too sunburnt out in the sun at the beachs.....just had to mention that I saw Toy Soldiers and have to say it's still one of my all time faves!!!

Ok, so you're probably not going to read this but... you know, as long as you don't rebuild whatever's on the front page will be on the front page... even if it's two years old...

Posted by: StarkRG at August 3, 2004 12:21 AM

oh yeah, and I hope you have a good time with your awesome family (you bastard, rubbing it in for the rest of us ;))

Posted by: StarkRG at August 3, 2004 12:22 AM

Happy Birthday to Ryan, Anne and Nolan! Have a great family vacation, you all deserve it :)

We'll miss you and look forward to a long Wheatonian slide show when you return. :)

Posted by: Erin at August 3, 2004 12:36 AM

I hope you don't get pissed. I am bringing you a guinness and some old Dodgers baseball cards to Powell's because you're cool like that. And if that's too much for you to handle I'll drink the guinness there on the spot and give you the dodgers cards anyways because who really wants a 1990 Kirk Gibson or Fernando anyways... that was like 2 years too late.

Seriously. I am driving from Seattle to appreciate you and I do. I appreciate you. You are a cool ass mofo. Oh, and I just won 20 bucks at 7-card stud after getting tossed while all-ining in hold em. Gotta love tourneys among friends.

Big ups to old town. Dena representing. (Seattle boy is too happy to care that he is a lame ass geek.)

Enjoy your well deserved time off.

Break sounds like a good idea Wil. I am seriously thinking of taking one too. Now that I own a house I have so much more to do and work on. Enjoy the break and have fun.

Posted by: Richard j Smith at August 3, 2004 01:29 AM

Have fun, Wil, you've earned it!

Happy Birthday to Anne and Ryan!

Posted by: Eric at August 3, 2004 01:52 AM

One thing you might consider, if you could be out doing some overnight camping, is that the Perseids meteor shower peaks around the 11th or 12th; it's one of the biggest consistent showers there is. Even if you're camping before then, you can still see quite a few; I think I might have seen a couple already tonight. If you don't know much about the specifics, it would be enough just to look generally northeastward in the sky, and you'd figure it out soon enough.

Posted by: John Owens at August 3, 2004 01:55 AM

Have fun! Enjoy the good life, and we'll be here when you get back.

Posted by: Rowland at August 3, 2004 02:02 AM

There are some very cool geocaches in Portland. Don't miss Council Crest.

Posted by: DrBacchus at August 3, 2004 03:40 AM

Hey Wil, have a great time off. If you're looking for something to do in Portland I'd recommend you hit one of the McMenamin's theatres for a second run movie and a pitcher of beer. It's one of my favorite things to do when visiting down there. Enjoy the freedom of not being jacked in all the time, and we'll see you when you return!

Posted by: Kristen at August 3, 2004 04:10 AM

Family time rules, enjoy it Wil!!

Posted by: Drew at August 3, 2004 05:32 AM

Enjoy the vaca Wil.

I'm on vacation this week too - Maine is looking good right about now. My folks have a place on a lake. I'll be taking Just a Geek with me. I inhaled Dancing Barefoot in a couple hours last night. It's amazing how much you have evolved as a writer. I've been reading your blog since you started it in 2001. Keep up the great work! (After your vacation..)

Happy birthdays all around.

Michelle

PS - Scary medical emercencies: My sis-in-law is having brain surgery today. Send some mojo to the East coast if you have a chance - thanks.

Posted by: Sharfa at August 3, 2004 05:57 AM

Yeah, before you become totally uncool! To paraphrase Bender, unless you hit a time warp on your trip, I wouldn't worry about it!

All kidding aside, I hope you have a great time on your trip. Plus, consider a night of D&D with the boys, or have their coolometers picked up that D&D is smack in the middle of downtown Nerdopolis?

Posted by: ross at August 3, 2004 06:15 AM

Hey, if you're in Oregon, hit Ashland for the Shakespeare festival. It is incredible, and the shows are well enough pressented to fascinate even a 13 year old. One year, doing Midsummer Night's Dream, Puck delivered a monolog while strolling along a railing 20 feet up. It really is different theater.

Have fun!

Hey Wil. Good to know you're taking time with the family. Have a great time. I think I'll take one too.

Have a wonderful vacation Wil. Hope you get all your creative juices flowing over and have to come back to us and report everything going around in that hamster wheel in your brain. LOL!
Take care and glad to hear that your family medical problem seems to be righting itself nicely.
So glad that Las Vegas was a positive experience.

Hey Wil, glad to hear you're taking time off. I knew you needed it, glad you did too.

Live Long And Prosper, and all that jazz, and happy happy birthday to all.

Read you soon again, and I'll be seeing you.

If anyone deserves a vacation, it's you. Thanks for a great performance in Vegas. I just got back from my own vacation, and I gotta say, it's a good thing to take some time to appreciate the family. Enjoy every moment, it's well earned.

Happy birthday to everyone(belated and future)!

Thank you, everyone, for your kind thoughts. I'm really looking forward to turning off the damn internet (seriously: unplugging the modem and everything) and just spending quality time with my family. It's going to RULE.

So I'm closing comments now, and taking my family out to breakfast -- because that seems like a great way to start off.

See you all in two weeks. :)
