« in labyrinths of coral caves | Main | the world before later on » September 14, 2004miss hoover, i bent my wookieI've updated my Appearances page to reflect some stuff that's coming up: namely, Gnomedex and Linucon. There's some other stuff in the works, but until I sign on the dotted line, I had better not talk about it. Also, if you're half the fan of Futurama that I am, you will probably enjoy The Top 25 Futurama Moments. And if you're into poker, you should check out The Film Geek's poker blog. It's good. Oh, and if you get a chance to watch Star Wars: Empire of Dreams, you simply must do it. To quote my wife, "I'm not even a Star Wars Geek, and I loved it." I agree completely Empire of dreams was great! Posted by: Karynth at September 14, 2004 10:42 AMGood grief where do you come up with titles? Makes no sense, completely random (that I can tell) and really funny. Sandie, the topic is a Simpsons quote. :) Posted by: christina at September 14, 2004 10:53 AMWil! We're waiting for you on the East Coast! Why don't those guys at Creation give you a spot at the con in October in Cherry Hill (Philly) or the Thanksgiving con in NJ (NYC). Been WAY too long since we've seen you on the right coast! Or maybe you can find a geek-oriented con out here to come to! --*Rob That Star Wars special was indeed amazing. Kurt Russell as Han Solo? Cindy Williams as the princess? Could have been a much different set of films. I'm still reeling over the fact that if Tom Selleck hadn't been contractually obligated to do Magnum PI, he would have been Indiana Jones! Posted by: andy at September 14, 2004 10:54 AMbahaha. what's a diorama? i Love the simpson's reference.. [the title for whomever doesn't get it.] i am a huge groening fan and like the website you linked to said, i have every episode on dvd. and on empire of dreams, i am so not a star wars geek either - but this one was really awesome. Posted by: undefinedmuse at September 14, 2004 10:59 AMI love that you put a Star Wars referencing Simpson's quote on an entry which includes references to both Star Wars and another cartoon by the creators of Simpsons. It's circular, it goes up and down, and around. Simpsons air time and me being home never coincide. Yes, yes...I have a VCR, but theres a season of WitchBlade and a couple other movies that I havent watched yet. And I agree...the East Coast really is a nice place. The NC mountains are absolutly gorgeous this time of year. Posted by: Sandie at September 14, 2004 11:03 AMoooh a poker blog! awesome.. bookmarked. :P Posted by: neph at September 14, 2004 11:11 AM*POW*
*BOINK* Is it a BIRD? is it a PLANE? no its SUPERWIL! (this is re the conventions by the way) Hope you get over your hatred of flying soon... can i hypnotise you?? huh huh can i can i?? A xx Posted by: andrea at September 14, 2004 11:19 AMI don't know if I'm a Star Wars geek or not, but I absolutely loved Empire of Dreams. Particularly the interview portions with Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford. Fisher is so funny and well-spoken, and it was great to hear Ford give props for his career to Lucas. Posted by: Denise at September 14, 2004 11:19 AMThe longer version of Empire of Dreams is going to be on the Star Wars trilogy DVD. The one that aired was the edited version. Very cool. Posted by: JediJaina at September 14, 2004 11:26 AMLucas is so lame. Special edition, yech! WTF?!?! You wouldn't sign Bobby The Mat's nor MY copy of Python and you're taunting the world with such an offer? Bastard! Well, it's a rarity, kids. Go and get it!! Posted by: Russ at September 14, 2004 11:38 AMWhile i really cant stand star wars, (no self respecting trek fan should as lucas got all of his good ideas from st.) that line may be one of ralpg wiggums best. a close second would have to be, "the doctor said id have less nose bleeds if i just kept my finger out of there!" anyhoo, Wil! you have to come to the east coast! im tired of trekk'n to vegas and L.A. for good con's! Posted by: Joseph Driscoll at September 14, 2004 11:47 AMFarnsworth: "Tell them I hate them!" Best Futurama Episode EVER!!!! Posted by: Kimberly at September 14, 2004 11:48 AMI was caught up by Star Wars: Empire of Dreams too. Of course, I've been a Star Wars fanatic since I was 9 and the first movie came out. Watching that documentary had a lot of nostalgia-impact for me. I was really glued to the set watching Empire of Dreams. I'm amazed that those movies ever got finished and ended up being *good*. Some of the first takes and the other voices they tried would have made it a lot poorer movie, which would have been probably still cool to a 9 year old (hey, I even liked Space: 1999 back then), but I doubt it would have stood up to the test of time like it has. Yay for Lucas goodness! :) Chris Posted by: Chris Garrison at September 14, 2004 11:49 AMBah! The first frickin' time I don't go to GnomeDex and Wil goes! Dammit, Wil! Damn you Pirillo! Damn all of Lake Tahoe! Have fun - the GD is insane! -idio Posted by: idiosynchronic at September 14, 2004 11:53 AMI just brought up the web interface of my tivo (from work) and told it to record the Star Wars program on Sunday. Thanks for the heads up will. -Jason Posted by: Jason at September 14, 2004 12:03 PMHi Wil, how are you? I know this is not related to the post, but I wanted to respond to the post "In Labyrinths of Coral Caves" here, since I didn't get to respond yesterday. Look, we've all tried to "fit in" at one point or another. Everyone falls victim to trying to be like the "cool kids" at some point in their lives. Good for you for realizing that it doesn't matter what other people think, certainly not the media. You're an intelligent guy with a heart of gold. Nowadays, both of those traits are hard to find in men, especially around the area I live in. But you've been blessed with both of those characteristics (not to mention you have a knack for writing and acting). Obviously, Anne wouldn't have married you if you didn't have any of those things, and you wouldn't have so many people who support you and love you. But they do, and they always will no matter what, and that's all that matters. And even though you are intelligent, kind and talented, part of the reason we all love you is because we can relate to you. And we're all going to continue to support and love you because whether or not you know it, you have a connection with us and the rest of your fans. So you don't have to apologize to us. On a side note (and actually relevant to the topic "Miss Hoover, I Bent My Wookie"), I'll try to rent Empire of Dreams this weekend. And I like The Film Geeks' Poker Blog. (He mentioned that if he could play poker with anyone, he'd like two of the players to be Colin Mochrie and Ryan Stiles. That's cool because Whose Line Is It Anyway? is one of my all-time favorite shows!) -Vanessa Nichole Posted by: Vanessa Nichole at September 14, 2004 12:09 PMDig the title :) Posted by: Stephanie at September 14, 2004 12:20 PMMinor correction: it's spelled "wookiee". Posted by: Aaron at September 14, 2004 12:54 PMDammit. Finally a con close enough to my house I can actually make the drive and I have to work. The Fates are conspiring against me..... Posted by: Gemini at September 14, 2004 12:59 PMHAN SHOT FIRST!!!!!! To have Greedo shoot first or to have them shoot at the same time to teach a lesson to kids is so stupid. The whole point of Han Solo's character is that in the beginning he is shady, a scoundrel. He doesn't believe in the rebellion or the force, he is a realist a skeptic. As his character develops he believes in both the rebellion & force more and more. For the D&D geeks Han's alignment kinnda goes from being Chaotic Neutral in the beginning to Chaotic good.... Posted by: genx'er at September 14, 2004 01:34 PMLoved Empire of Dreams. Been a Star Wars fan my whole life (ok, since I was 7 1/2), and cannot wait to see it on DVD. Ya, I hate that it's the special editions, and I had planned on boycotting them...but, well, it's STAR WARS. What can you do? Thanks for the heads up on your appearances, Wil. Just let us know when you're coming to the mid-west. I'll be there! Melissa Posted by: Melissa at September 14, 2004 01:55 PMMan, why aren't there any cool events with cool guests inside Australia? This blows. The last decent event was a 3 day web design summit that I wanted to go to, but unfortunately for $750 it didn't excite me quite enough. hahaha Hey, Wil, I like your plan to lower spam comments; make the security key so long that only serious commenters will want to type it in. ;) Posted by: Mitch at September 14, 2004 02:07 PMHalf the fan of Futurama that you are? I bet I'm double that! I'm twice half the Futurama fan you are! Even so, I liked that list of Top 25 moments. But I wouldn't mind reading about what you like in Futurama. If you were half as much as double the Futurama fan I am, you'd write your own list! Posted by: RAB at September 14, 2004 02:08 PMI saw the Star Wars thing too. I only have one real comment. TERRI NUNN as Princess Leia!!!!! Yes, she tried out for the role! I have all these visions of Cinnibun hair-do's singing "I'm a goddess... I'm a virgin... I'm a slut..." Wild-assed 80's flashback there. Posted by: Chris at September 14, 2004 02:36 PMLoved "Empire of Dreams." Really made me think of when Star Wars didn't suck as hard as it does now with these prequels :\ (but maybe I'm just a bitter Old man" ... at 27....) It's too bad the DVD release of the trilogy is that remastered crap, where Greedo shoots first and with the changed Ewok music. Posted by: Jason at September 14, 2004 02:59 PMno way, the best ralph wiggum line is "my cat's breath smells like cat food!" Posted by: christina at September 14, 2004 02:59 PM"I found a moon rock in my nose." EoD was a great show, and it is kind of surprising that the flicks got done. I was glad to see that they spent more than two seconds talking about David Prowse (The Englishman in the Vader suit) He had a small role on the BBC tv version of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy as the bodyguard for Hotblack Desiato, and I remember an interview that started off with someone asking him why Lucas didn't want to use his voice for Vader and I forgot what Prowse's reply was, because I was laughing so hard at his thick accent, picturing that coming from under Vader's helmet. Poor guy, he didn't even get to be the face of Anakin at the end of Jedi, instead that part (and the part of Anakin-Jedi Ghost) went to Sebastian Shaw, until now, for in the new DVD's you have Prowse in the suit, James Earl Jones as the voice, Shaw in the unmasked scene, and finally, Hayden Christensen as the Jedi-Ghost. Talk about a complex character... Posted by: Matt C at September 14, 2004 03:24 PMstupid dog episode!! STUPID DOG EPISODE!! that is the saddest thing ever. I can't even watch that episode again. Posted by: jodilyn at September 14, 2004 04:04 PMYes, Empire of Dreams was quite good. I'm keeping my fingers crossed they have not managed to mess up the DVD mixes of 4 - 6 TOO terribly badly. Posted by: Axinar at September 14, 2004 04:46 PMI was not really expecting to watch all of Empire of Dreams, but it hooked me completely. I enjoyed the interviews with Carrie Fisher and Ford, too, but also just remembered what a great film the first one (fourth one?) really was. I remember seeing Star Wars in 1977 - I was 16 years old, and I saw it three times in about as many weeks, on three different teenie-bopper dates. I had been a huge American Grafitti fan, so enjoyed seeing Harrison Ford, but then I remember the sudden "Mark Hamill crush" that took me over...oh the shame of all of it now...but still, the first film was truly ahead of its time, in more ways than one. Rock on, Mr. Lucas. Posted by: Deborah at September 14, 2004 05:11 PMOnce again, I get to be the idiot here. But then, Im not the Idiot Doof Extrordanaire for nothing. Im unfamiliar with the Star Wars thing. This is probably because I spent the past couple months completely cut off from civalization. Email me if ye want, jade_dagger@yahoo.com Posted by: Sandie at September 14, 2004 05:20 PMSTAR WARS: EMPIRE OF DREAMS will be re-airing on A&E Sunday, Sept. 19th @ 12:00pm for those wanting to see it 9 (or re-watch it) I've been a big SW fan since I was a kid. Can't wait to buy it on DVD next week! Posted by: ratboy at September 14, 2004 06:39 PMOK - I'm too lazy to figure out PGP with Eudora or I'd send this via e-mail. Anyway, on appearances pages and such, it would be cool if you created an iCalendar file for each event, then had a link to it. That way, when we open the link, the file opens in iCal/Outlook/whatever is handling those files, and you can add it to your calendar. I'm a geek, too, but an old one; I want those computers to do my work for me. You can hand-code the iCalendar stuff, or use Apple's iCal, export it from Outlook, or any of a myriad (OK, really a few) other ways, but it would be a cool addition. Posted by: Tim Hare at September 14, 2004 06:40 PMGreat link to the futurama list, Wil. When I got to number 1 I smiled, and remembered that was the only cartoon I have ever cried(a few tears) to. And I almost never cry for movies/tv. Posted by: sweat at September 14, 2004 06:50 PMBest. Episode. Ever. Posted by: Mikey Sky at September 14, 2004 06:53 PMWil, This is off-topic but we need your help. Spike TV has cancelled ST:TNG. Your fans are having withdrawal symptoms. A quick note from you would convince them to reinstate Star Trek. Please!! Thanks so much!! Freeman :) Posted by: Freeman in Louisiana at September 14, 2004 07:16 PMDood! if yer gonna be at tahoe in october I'll be there! It'll be my B'day present to me!(10/04/62) Empire of Dreams was the making of special I've always wanted. Can't wait to see the whole thing on the DVD. BTW, love your articles in Dungeon Magazine. Makes me remember why I love gaming. Posted by: Wayne at September 14, 2004 07:40 PMDamm It Wil!!!.. The hell with everyones opinions about you.. It's your Career, Life and all that goes with it.. If I got so conerned about all this "Crap" when I was in the "Music Biz" I'd 'a Been Dead years ago and not had the nearly 40 years that I did get..
Atleast She can see what is "Going on" Outside of what you as a person are seeing the way the rest of the world views you.. Wifey's are like that, They seem to know sometimes (kids also seen to know).. hehe. Trust your Family, they are the ones that will always be there.. SO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! email me Dude!!!!! Keith Dick kdick10711@earthlink.net And!!!!!!!!!! Yes Let's do a link Trade... http://lifetimegamer.blogspot.com/ Posted by: Keith Dick at September 14, 2004 08:55 PMI dug Empire of Dreams, but found some things lacking, probably because I'm a major SW geek. Otherwise it was great and I saw some footage I'd never seen before. I wasn't even going to buy this new DVD edition, but now I'm reconsidering based on bonus material alone. However I'm HIGHLY DISAPPOINTED that they took the original actor for Vader out at the end of ROTJ and put Hayden in! (when you see Vader and ObiWan and they are transparent blue). Why can't Lucas leave it alone! Bah. Posted by: lomara at September 14, 2004 09:00 PMA google of "Just a Geek" and "Review" turns up 4K+ hits. Sampling them last night, they are overwhelmingly positive. Your book is out there, being read. It's good stuff, amigo, keep it coming. Hi Wil! Long time reader, first time poster. Wanted to thank you for the link to Linucon (somehow we had missed that it even exists), but as Houstonians we are thrilled to have a show right next door. We are both sci-fi fans and my husband was the linux penguin for Halloween. I just registered my husband and I (badges 119 and 120), and we are looking forward to buying you a Guinness and maybe playing a little poker. Can't wait. Keep up the good work. Posted by: carrie at September 15, 2004 07:53 AMThanks for the Poker Geek link. Last night I had to watch the World Series of Poker final table with my husband. Although he's a geek of many different varieties, he is quickly becoming a poker geek. So, why is it that I still beat him at Texas Hold 'em? Posted by: Janet at September 15, 2004 09:05 AMI heartily agree with those that posted before me....the East Coast is a nice place to visit. Wil - Please do! I also enjoyed Empire of Dreams. One of the advantages of being older is that I saw SW for the first time as an adult (20+). It is one of two movies that I've seen twice in a theatre. The second time I took my good friend and oh-so-anti-gun-and-violence-person. She abolutely loved it! Posted by: pixelluna at September 15, 2004 01:10 PMI LOVE FUTURAMA!!! I LOVE POKER (can' bet yet, damn my 15 year oldness)!!! I wanna steal the wind-up Bender, please! Lookie a wookie in a tree *steals wind-up Bender while you're distracted. Posted by: Beth at September 15, 2004 06:32 PMwhoa. that security code thing got long. watching that star wars behind the scenes thing made me think that I wouldn't have picked carrie fisher for the role. I thought corvette summer kid was right on the money though. and harrison as ham salad couldn't be better. very soon, it will be cheaper to film these movies on location. Posted by: anc at September 15, 2004 07:12 PMWhy did they miss the "Snu Snu" episode in The Top 25 Futurama Moments?! Posted by: Peter Choi at September 16, 2004 01:49 AMI love Futurama...and now I'm off pixy stix so I'll make sense.
