« dancing in the deepest oceans | Main | everything counts » September 22, 2004stars trekking for jimmy doohanI've never been the captain of anything in my life, so this is pretty cool: The Memory Walk, 2004 Team, "Stars Trekking For Jimmy Doohan," was inspired by the heart-felt and powerful messages made by Star Trek actors during the Farewell Dinner and celebration for James "Scotty" Doohan, on August 28th of this year. I am going to be a Gnomedex on the 2nd, so I can't actually head down there and do my best R. Lee Ermey impression, but I'm honored just the same. Will any SoCal area WWdN readers step up, and represent? It would be SO COOL if we could get a posse out there to support this team. You can find out more about the team at our official homepage: Stars Trekking for Jimmy Doohan. congrats, wil! yeah, captaining... i'd imagine it's fun Posted by: Lewis at September 22, 2004 11:02 AMAwesome, Wil. Well, looks like another oppertunity for this Monkey to do some good. My donation will flow this week, as it did for the Marathon. Since I'm on the East Coast, I can't be there either, but I'll be pulling for "Captain Wil" and the entire team! James Doohan ROCKS! \m/ Posted by: Eric In Pa at September 22, 2004 11:15 AMHow come it won't accept donations of less than $15? What if I only have $10 to donate? Posted by: Debby at September 22, 2004 11:28 AMYou know I would if I lived closer. That would be awesome. P.S. We all know how long you have wanted to say "make it so" ;) Posted by: neph at September 22, 2004 11:32 AMI'm smiling through tears, as my MIL is now in hospice care with late-stage Alzheimer's. I have worked with the local Alzheimer's Association to find space at a reasonable cost in order to allow caregivers a place to meet and talk about what they are dealing with. I pray every day that a cause and a cure might be found for this horrendous disease, so that no one else must suffer. Posted by: Beth at September 22, 2004 11:32 AMAw ...I wish I could go..make us proud(er) Wil. Aye,Captain..she just can't take no more Posted by: bluecat-redblanket at September 22, 2004 11:45 AMAw...wish I could go. Make us proud(er) Wil. "Aye Captain she just can't take no more." Posted by: bluecat-redblanket at September 22, 2004 11:47 AMHere's yet another person who'd join in.. if, you know, distance and money (ie the $4200+ I'll have already spent on rent and tuition) meant nothing. Speaking of "Captain Wesley Crusher".. you have very amusing timing, Wil. I was just watching that episode a couple of days ago. As long as you don't start impersonating Patrick, everything should be okay, right? Posted by: Matt at September 22, 2004 11:54 AMExcellent Mr. Crusher! A field commission you most definitely deserved! Carry on. Posted by: M. Douglas Wray at September 22, 2004 12:06 PMHmmm... I wonder if there could be, like satellite walks for those of us who live too far away to actually participate? You know, like all of us up here in Oregon could agree on a place to walk (or several places to walk as it's a big state) or the people on the East Coast or where ever. Captain Wheaton, any thoughts? Congrats on being named not only the Captain but one of the most powerful speakers at the event. :) Posted by: Erin at September 22, 2004 12:09 PMI'm so glad I had the chance to meet the man a year ago. Posted by: dave at September 22, 2004 12:17 PMWil can you pull or push some weight to get them to set up a paypal account? 1) I don't live in the USA and 2) I can only give $10. But I would like to give. I'm sure many of your other readers would like to give too, but some of us are broke little monkeys with good hearts and combined we could push that total up :) Posted by: kathryn at September 22, 2004 01:07 PMWil: i always thought young Crushers time with the traveler should count as training for starfleet considering Wesley was doing things far beyond the call of a regular cadet. Congrats! Posted by: Joseph Driscoll at September 22, 2004 01:11 PMHey, If you're really interested in helping out the Alzheimer's Association and can't make it to the LA walk, check out: Locally, you can setup your own team. Perhaps we can have a nation of Jimmy Doohan walkers. Posted by: Lupins at September 22, 2004 02:36 PMYou must go as George Dubya Bush. Coincidentally, here is an excerpt from Bush's speech at the UN a couple of days ago, "Well, I don't give a flying phooey what the polls say about Wheaton. Sure he may be attractive in a geeky sort of way. Not that I'm gay. Not that there's anything wrong with that. However, I believe it is time we send a man to Mars. In fact, if we send anyone, it will be my good friend, Bob, who deserves more than Cheney, even. You can find his harrowing yet inspiring journal at http://www.sendbobtomars.com and it's a darn good read, y'all." Thanks, Dubya. Right back at ya. Posted by: bob at September 22, 2004 02:52 PMOOH, Captain Wesley sounds so cool! * makes anime heart eyes and giggles* Congrats, love. I saw TNG episode "Relics" and thought of how what you all were doing for Jimmy Doohan is so sweet. It's just like how kind Picard was to Scotty. I actually cried a little. Posted by: Beth at September 22, 2004 03:37 PMHey, everyone! Wil's 10:35 am posting created some interesting buzz. George Takei, via his business manager, indicated he wanted in on the action too. (Well, he is on the Alzheimer's Association Advisory Board.) So, George is now the Team Co-Captain to Wil's Captain! Ah, the power of the internet. *whistle-y sound* Captain Uncle Willy on the bridge! Hurray for you, Cap'n! Wait, now I want cereal... Thanks a lot! ;o) Posted by: Kimberly at September 22, 2004 07:41 PM"Captain Wesley Crusher" hehe Sounds great! Congrats Captain Wil! :) Posted by: Sue at September 22, 2004 08:57 PMI'd love to donate and help out but I'm quite a bit short on cash now after the divorce. Three kids seem to suck down a wallet when there's no child support coming in. If we could get some paypal arrangements made I could probably donate some of the proceeds from my auctions that I have going on! Posted by: Kandy at September 22, 2004 09:24 PMMy dad has Alzheimers (early stages), and I offer you my heartfelt thanks. Posted by: synchronicity at September 22, 2004 10:42 PMCAPTAIN !!! As part of your audition, Mr. Wheaton, we would like you to AUDIOBLOG the opening lines:- Go on it’ll be fun. I'm a first time poster, but have been reading through your blog now daily for about 5 months, very heartwarming and awsome to come home am read about I must say. Since you're on the subject of star trek I also wanted to say honestly you were one of my favorite characters, always enjoyed Wesley crusher, seriously. Congrats on the honorary Captain ranking!:) I would definately be there if I wasn't up in Portland and had to work so darn much:( Posted by: Jake at September 22, 2004 11:35 PMStrange the >$14.99 requirement. So I flipped my thumb back by donating $15.15. I agree with the previous paypal idea. I too live in Pasadena, but have a prior commitment on the 2nd. Best wishes. Posted by: Brett Walker at September 23, 2004 12:34 AMKind of ironic, isn't it. Wil and George. Wesley and Sulu. Both helmsmen in their respective series. Ahead full, gentlemen \m/ Engage... Posted by: Eric In Pa at September 23, 2004 01:08 AM>Wil and George. Wesley and Sulu. Both helmsmen in their respective series. No so strange. It's like the race car driver taking care of the guy who fixes the engine. If the engine, she no go, the driver, he sit there and look stupid. Posted by: SeanO at September 23, 2004 03:51 AMCongrats Wil! Although I have no specific information, or any connection, the 15 dollar requirement is most likely due to service changes etc. that make amounts lower than that administratively cost prohibitive. Just for the sake of analogy, do you remeber on Seinfeld when he had to sign hundreds of 12 cent cheques? Hardly worth the bother. Although that's a bit of a ridiculous example, it illustrates the point. Even low amounts on paypal suffer from this. Certainly anything under a buck will earn paypal some money, and the receiver very little. It sort of becomes a 'it's the thought that counts' kind of donation. Posted by: anc at September 23, 2004 07:52 AMi walked my first 5K last weekend (walkfromobesity.com) and would sign up to walk for jimmy in this one if it weren't in SoCal. :( guess i'll just have to donate instead. congrats captain! Way to go! Posted by: Kethrim at September 23, 2004 12:22 PMI understand about administrative costs but surely it couldn't be too bad? Remember on Wil and Anne's walk - small Paypal amounts made a tremendous difference. I sell on ebay and get nicked every time by Paypal but $4 out of $5 is still better than not having the $4. All those small amounts could equal big money. If nothing else comes of the request for paypal I am thinking of asking someone to go in with me for a donation. That's the only other idea I can come up with. (And no not going to Starbucks for a day doesn't apply to me, or any other luxuries for that matter. But this cause and especially since it is for Jimmy Doohan, whom I adore in ST, is worth scrounging for. Broke people unite!!) If anyone has any other ideas could they post them? 50,000 monkeys can't be wrong ;) Posted by: kathryn at September 23, 2004 01:00 PMAlzheimers is such a worthy cause. I work with Alzheimers patients every day and its a scary and sad thing all the time. Posted by: alli at September 23, 2004 01:25 PMFYI - Re: PayPal pledges and the minimum the site accepts - The site also has a printable pledge card that can be mailed in for any amount. Kevin. Posted by: Kevin Hanson at September 23, 2004 01:27 PMI love how George Takei is now the co-captain Shouldn't he be your Number One, Wil? Posted by: Evan at September 23, 2004 01:27 PMAbout bloody time Wesley got to be a captain ;) Congratulations and break a leg (not literally though, that would not be fun) } { A day late, but what the hey. Just made my contribution to the Wheaton/Doohan/Alzheimers effort. Wish I could actually walk in the event, but I'll be out of town then, too. I will, however, be walking in the the Susan B Komen Breast Cancer Walk this Sunday, at Fashion Island (Orange County,CA). Lots of good causes out there to support. Thanks to Wil for helping us find ways to participate. Posted by: Valerie S at September 23, 2004 10:48 PMi miss them (st: original and st: tng) .. (deep sigh) Posted by: max at September 24, 2004 02:37 AMBut R. Lee Ermey was only a sargeant! No, I see you developing into more of a Commodore Matt Decker type. Posted by: ross at September 24, 2004 07:41 AMOn the Linucon site they have announced you won't be attending the banquest, and have linked to your story of the Grand Slam Con and the bad experience you had at that dessert event... I just wanted to commend you for taking care of yourself. There's no reason a convention should be hell on the guests. Posted by: Robert in Austin at September 24, 2004 08:00 AMHey, StarTrek.com has picked up the story! http://www.startrek.com/startrek/view/news/article/6772.html Kevin. Posted by: Kevin Hanson at September 24, 2004 09:24 AM"...never been the captain of anything..." Not true. Captain of your soul, master of your fate. Or some such nonsense :) Read "Invictus". Posted by: James in S.D. at September 24, 2004 10:17 AMSounds like fun! Posted by: Lisa at September 24, 2004 12:16 PMI can't go. But if a large group of WWdN members go, I'll sponsor/pledge. How will this work? Posted by: Scott T at September 24, 2004 11:32 PMOK, I just made a donation. It's really easy. So here's a challenge! All WWdn members and fans give to the walk in honor of James Doohan. Let's show the community and "Scotty's" friends, how powerful, compassionate and generous we are! Make sure you indicate Wil or WWdn. Posted by: Scott T at September 24, 2004 11:46 PMFor those of us who are not close enough to SoCal to participate in Will's walk, I have come up with a good idea. On the Memory Walk website, you can locate a walk in your area or state. If we could find walks near us that also take place on October 2nd, we could begin a nation wide walk for Jimmy Doohan. We may be the only ones who realize that we're doing this, but surely that's good enough. I encourage you all to find a walk near you and join in. What better thing could you do on a Saturday? Posted by: Jessica DeHart at September 26, 2004 12:23 PMGreetings all! This is truly my first visit to Wil's site and I just wanted to say that I've already signed up for the Walk and Joined the Team too! I'm looking forward to the walk this coming Sunday, and I thank all of you for your support and good thoughts as well. Thank you Wil for spreading the word as well! See you round the galaxy!
