programming notes

I'm playing in the Poker Bloggers Tournament tonight at Poker Stars. It's 20 +2 NLHE, and anyone who is interested in playing or watching should go read Iggy for details.

I came in second in a tourney in Austin, and I've been playing fairly well in ring games recently (even though my pocket aces got cracked night before last and cost me 40 bucks in a 2-4 game . . . goddamn paired board), but I'm pretty sure I'm dead money in this tournament. Iggy is going pro, and the other bloggers I'm facing have a lot more tournament experience than I do, but if I get to drop The Hammer at least once, I'll be happy.

Tomorrow I fly out to Dallas for the Dallas Comic Con on Saturday, and then I fly back home on Saturday night so I can do my Borders book signing on Sunday. I hope some locals can make it to both events.

Final thought for this morning: If the World Series is half as good as the League Championship Series, it's going to be a great final week of baseball.

First, the good news. I made the money. I finished 16th out of 133 for a whopping $31.92 payoff on my $22. If I had just limped along barely, and folded my way into the money or something, I might be happy with that. I only got "lucky" once i... [Read More]

Wil, do you have any idea about the schedule in Dallas yet?

Posted by: Chuck Cage at October 21, 2004 08:30 AM

Well Wil, you're halfway to your desired Sox vs. Cards World Series. Go Sox!

Posted by: Glenn at October 21, 2004 08:33 AM

if the world series is anything like the ALCS, i'm going to have to quit my job and sleep during the days. go sox!

Posted by: steph at October 21, 2004 08:39 AM

So right about the Sox! I don't even like baseball but have been completely taken in by the enthusiasm of the city here in Boston. Series tickets go on sale at 3pm EST, wish me luck!

Wanna go party in Dallas tomorrow? I can show you around :)

Posted by: robin at October 21, 2004 09:04 AM

From an unabashed Red Sox fan: The trash-talking Yankees fans we've seen over the past decade or so can enjoy a nice steaming cup of STFU.

Let's all party like it's 1918.

Posted by: Jesse C. Slicer at October 21, 2004 09:08 AM

Wil,

Without reading everything you've ever written on this site (I haven't had that much time) I was wondering... Do you charge for autographs at cons? I ask because I have enough money to get into the show this weekend in Plano, but probably not enough to pay for an autograph. I'm just wondering if I should bring something for you to sign.

Posted by: scotticus at October 21, 2004 09:21 AM

My night is going consist of locking the door to my bedroom, cranking some music, and concentrating on winning that bounty.

See you at the final table, Wil.

[insert cheesy gunslinger showdown music here]

Posted by: Chad at October 21, 2004 09:38 AM

scotticus: When I go to a show like the Dallas Comic-con, I am doing it as a way to support my family, so I do charge a fee for autographs.

Posted by: wil at October 21, 2004 09:39 AM

Bah.. I so can't make it to the Dallas convention saturday.. but good luck. :)

Posted by: Neph at October 21, 2004 09:55 AM

At this moment I wish I was a mediocre left-handed pitcher just hitting free agency so I could graciously allow the Yankees to provide a $100,000 a year income to all my progeny until the end of time.

Posted by: Fred at October 21, 2004 09:57 AM

(Ah, there's another robin on here! I'll add my last initial on here from now on.)

Have a safe trip out to Dallas tomorrow, Wil, and a great time at the con. Good luck at poker tonight, too. Peace out!

Posted by: robin s. at October 21, 2004 10:07 AM

Looking forward to seeing you at the final table tonight, and then in Plano on Saturday. Have a good one ...

See you in the blogger tourney!

Posted by: alan at October 21, 2004 10:35 AM

Being born in Boston and having watched this team for a paltry 35 years I can say this is a GREAT day! I look forward to the World Series and to playing you tonight in the Blogger Tourney! Like I said on Iggy's it would be aewsome to tell my son "I Knocked out Aqualad!". lol. Great blog! Keep it up. It really grows on you.

Posted by: SirFWALGMan at October 21, 2004 10:44 AM

See ya there!
If you bring the HAMMER on me, I won't ever read your site again! Ok, yes I will. But can I get an acknowledgement on the website when you do it?
:)

Posted by: ChrisFish at October 21, 2004 10:45 AM

Wil,

Looking forward to playing with you tonight! And don't worry - a lack of tourney experience is nothing to be worried about. You'll do just fine.

Posted by: Jason at October 21, 2004 11:01 AM

Hey Wil...

Good luck tonight, but not enough to beat me ;-)

Keep your eyes out for Otis (the only two-time Poker Bloggers Tourney champ), Mean Gene (one time winner) and, of course, Iggy (defending champ).

There's plenty of good players out there, so it's gonna be tough, but based on what I've read here, you clearly have the skills to compete.

Posted by: CJ at October 21, 2004 11:08 AM

I'd love for you to knock me out, forcing me to send you my bounty :) :) :)

Best of luck, I am greatly looking forward to this tournament.

Posted by: BadBlood at October 21, 2004 11:19 AM

I was unable to find details on how to be a spectator of the tournament. Could someone point me in the right direction? Or maybe give a brief outline of what must be done? Anyone who does this will win a huge prize*.

* Note, although prize will be very huge, it will not exist in reality.

Posted by: anc at October 21, 2004 11:21 AM

Wil -- looking forward to having you sign your books on Saturday! I'm trying to pick some up at Barnes and Noble before I go to Plano, but Listen To The Wife and be sure to bring a lot of copies. Is the plan for you to be there signing when the autograph section opens at noon on Saturday? I probably won't be able to hear you read at 3p.m., dang it.
Thank you so much for coming to my neck of the woods!

Posted by: Eva at October 21, 2004 11:32 AM

NLCS. What about the ALCS. GO SOX. Not that I like the bosox, I just hate the yankees. FTNYY........

Posted by: EmDubb at October 21, 2004 11:35 AM

For those of you interested in just watching, you can download the PokerStars software, sign up for an account, and watch from the rails without having to put money in the account.

Apparently the guy who knocks Wil out will get a free autographed copy of his book. That guy will be me. Watch for the book on ebay next week! j/k.

We got 81 players signed up so far. This is going to be lots of fun. Only question is, what name is Wil playing under? My guess is Thehammer72.

Posted by: StudioGlyphic at October 21, 2004 11:39 AM

Hmmm... not sure if this poker site lends itself to railbirds. First, you'll have to download the software. You will probably have to sign in, as well (this requires no money, just a valid e-mail address).

After that, you'll need to click on the "Tournaments" tab and then on the "Private Tournaments" tab. You'll find the "Guiness and Poker Tournament" listed there. At 9:00 pm ET that tourney will start and players will be seated at their table. If you want to watch, you should be able to click on a particular table and click the "watch" button.

At least that's how I think it will work.

Now that I've told you all that. The least you could do is send some railbirds my way. I'll be playing as "Up4Poker" :-)

Posted by: CJ at October 21, 2004 11:40 AM

So the question I have is, will more railbirds be rooting for Wil or Iggy? I have no idea how their readerships compare, but I suspect Wil > Iggy in this (and many other) respect(s).

Posted by: StudioGlyphic at October 21, 2004 11:42 AM

lol, it's no contest. wil > me

i really want an autographed version of just a geek. i sooo hope i'm at wil's table. :)

Posted by: iggy at October 21, 2004 12:07 PM

I'm baaaaaaack!

And I so cannot wait for the World Series to start- my team won last year (I'm a Floridian and a loyal fan of the Marlins). They won in 1997, too.

I can't wait to see those sore losers, the New York Yankees, get crushed this year... again. Not that I like the Boston Red Sox all that much, it's just that the Yankees are total schmucks and I wanna see that one guy cry again just like last year when they lost (there's no crying in baseball!).

Strawberry shortcake, banana split
We think the Yankees are a pile of...
Shift it to the left, shift it to the right
Red Sox, Red Sox, fight, fight, fight!

Hehe... I love being a loudmouthed baseball nut.

woot... go sox... so glad they lost... hey wil, come to a massachusetts borders sometime...

Posted by: Sarah at October 21, 2004 01:08 PM

Wil,

I'll see you in Plano this Saturday. Sorry I can't make it to the book signing, but it's this thing about not living in Los Angeles anymore.

Look for someone dressed up as a Jedi. Yeah, a Jedi. The XO of my Trek fan club (USS Joshua) wants someone in non-Trek gear for our recruitment table this weekend.

Rock, rock on!

Posted by: Ariel at October 21, 2004 02:02 PM

Oh, yeah.

Who's your daddy now, Yankees?!

Go Sox!

Posted by: Ariel at October 21, 2004 02:03 PM

You'll be fine. Wear your poker bracelet I gave ya when you were here in Austin for good luck (but if we should end up heads up, I can make it be a bad luck bracelet...lol)

Just remember that those cards with faces on them are no good. Muck those right away. ;)

Posted by: April at October 21, 2004 02:08 PM

Good luck with the tourney tonight! My husband loves to play Hold Em and we enjoy reading about your adventures in poker.
I've been to one of C2's cons in Dallas. Ben puts on a good show. I hope you have a great time there.
GO 'STROS!

"Final thought for this morning: If the World Series is half as good as the League Championship Series, it's going to be a great final week of baseball."

as a life-long Red Sox fan, can I get an "A-MEN"?

Posted by: dianna at October 21, 2004 04:19 PM

Stars is extremely railbird-friendly - no ID required. Download the software, select the "tourney" button and the "private" tab, then doubleclick "Guinness and Poker Blog tournament".

Wish I could be there, but life intrudes. I'll be watching as much as I can.

Posted by: Don at October 21, 2004 04:41 PM

Now wil, you ARE going to have to tell us what your stars id is so we know who to railbird!

Posted by: Steve at October 21, 2004 04:41 PM

YEAH WIL! You MUST let us know what you ID will be so we know who to cheer for (those of us who will only be watching).

Have you seen today's "Dork Tower" yet?

Posted by: Maleah at October 21, 2004 05:53 PM

My truck broke down on me this mornin', but the mechanic said it's runnin' now, so I should (stress SHOULD) be able to make it to Plano.

John de Lancie.

Michael Dorn.

Brent Spiner.

And Wil Wheaton.

All at the same place?

Yep, I am so gonna be there, if my ol' Dodge can get me out of Austin.

Wil,
Wow, what a weekend you have coming up. The fall classic should be great!

That was pretty generous of you!

Maybe one day I'll get in on one of these games and get to win a free book, too.

Solid turnout, 133 entrants.

Posted by: performify at October 21, 2004 07:30 PM

Bah, ate my first line.

I just finished 65th. Not to shabby.

Solid turnout, 133 entrants.

Posted by: performify at October 21, 2004 07:31 PM

Whats your ID wil?

Posted by: Drew at October 21, 2004 07:35 PM

OK, here's a dumb question. Is Wil's nick a secret. I haven't found anything that looks like him in the list. I've checked in to see how he's doing, but it will have to be a mystery I guess.

133 players is pretty excellent!

Posted by: anc at October 21, 2004 07:37 PM

Wil, how are you able to play this? Does it run under WINE? (It's windows only, and I thought you were windowless)

Posted by: anc at October 21, 2004 07:48 PM

If Wil is who I think (I won't say in case he wants that private), he didn't do so good. His money was pretty dead tonight!.

I'm a guy named TuckerKatt who is playing aggressive against a bunch of tight scaredy sheep is doing quite well, eating up a lot of chips.

Posted by: anc at October 21, 2004 08:12 PM

I'm not a guy, I'm *watching* a guy named TuckerKatt. This poker watching is making me stay up too late.

Posted by: anc at October 21, 2004 08:25 PM

Great playing with you tonight Wil. See ya at the tables soon.

Posted by: Pauly at October 21, 2004 08:43 PM

I don't think I played bad at all. I'll check my hand history, and compare notes with the other players at my tables.

I finished in the 80s, when I went all-in with JJ against pocket 10s, and the pocket 10s ended up making a straight on the river.

Last I heard Metsfan was first with 45 players left.

And I play in WINE on Linux.

Posted by: wil at October 21, 2004 08:59 PM

GREAT final 2 tonight, went back and forth forever. MtDew's the winner!

Posted by: Drew at October 21, 2004 09:48 PM

Excellent tourney tonight! 80 is a decent finish! I went out 45. At least you saved yourself an hour! lol.

Posted by: SirFWALGMan at October 21, 2004 10:10 PM

No, wil, you were definitely NOT dead money. After a slow start, you built yourself a very nice stack. You were at or above average stack most of the night, and got your money in the pot with a better hand. You can't ask for much more than that. Unfortunately, a two-outer on the river took you down. That's rough.

I, on the other hand, was dead money. I obviously haven't been playing enough recently because I was way too agressive at the start and no one respected my raises!

However, I walked away happy when I doubled with the HAMMER after going all in preflop and cracking pocket 8's. Caught a 2 on the flop and a 7 on the river. That was sweet...

wil > CJ

Posted by: CJ at October 21, 2004 11:13 PM

wil, if youre hoping locals will come to your signings then get ready. i've been telling everyone at work how excited i am that you're coming to MY Borders! and you know what they say? "Jessie, you're just a geek". :) i'm making a shirt for the occasion. so be ready.

Wil,

Looks like the Cards made it. Now we get to see the Cards vs Sox in the World Series. Being from St. Louis area, I hope the cards can pull it off by game 5.

Posted by: Lance at October 22, 2004 05:49 AM

I finished around 60th, went all in preflop w/ kings, got called by a pair of aces. :(

Posted by: kdub at October 22, 2004 06:22 AM

Cardys won. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! (what can I say, Im a diehard Cubs fan)
Sox better win. grrrr

Hope you have fun in the Tourney. Good luck

Posted by: Greta Slotter at October 22, 2004 08:02 AM

Nice seeing you at the tables Wil. I finished 24th - a few spots out of the money, forced to make a choice between being blinded out of the game or moving all-in with QJo. Not my favorite place to be! Hope to see you at the next tourney.

Posted by: Jason at October 22, 2004 08:17 AM

I'm glad you had fun during the blogger tourney. I had a blast even though I got KO'd way too early. It gave me chance to watch other bloggers play. By the way, I liked your pokerstars picture . . . it was almost better than my brother's . . . whatch you talking about Willis! Anyone good luck with everything. Hey, I read one of your books not too long ago and let me say this . . . . I used to like Captain Kirk, now I don't. He's a clown! Keep up the good work Wil. Viva Las Vegas!!!

I just mentioned over at tehsoapbox.net that I might be up for hosting a Poker Night over at my apartment on Saturday evening. If you guys are interested drop me a line or reply to the Comic-Con thread over there. I think I'll be around at breakfast tomorrow morning, but Bree and I will definitely be around the convention during the day.

Anybody up for some Hold Em?

Wil Upchurch

Posted by: The Other Wil at October 22, 2004 11:23 AM

I ended up finishing in the money, 16th. I got my money in in two big hands as a favorite, and ended up losing both of them to get knocked out.

Not as bad as the beat you took, but it still hurt.

Posted by: alan / metsfan at October 22, 2004 11:52 AM

Dang it, Wil. Need more notice on these appearances (or, are you given not much notice, either?). The Santa Anita thing is not too far for me, but I'll be visiting my folks, in Hesperia. My girlies really wanted to talk to Aqualad ('s voice actor). Rats!!!

Have fun. You'll do a great job, as always. Plus, you won't have to fight traffic, like on your San Diego sojourn.

Posted by: Valerie S at October 23, 2004 10:23 AM

Hey look, a new reader! =)

I just wanted to wish you good luck in the tournament and I hope that you have a good time with it!

I wish I lived closer so that I could make it to some of your Border appreances but I shall have to live vicariously thru yours and others postings about them.

Um I'm the real Iggy. Not that Guinness loving poker player. Although in Tahoe I did have a Guinness - gave the other 5 of 6 away. You have to love when hotel managers give you free beer. Someone needs to remind me to go buy Wil's book - since I didn't get one in Tahoe.

We wanted to write a quick note to thank you again for talking to us today at the Comic Con. It was a blast and really made us happy to meet you and it was definitely worth the long drive. Bianca just read your entire "Just A Geek" book in one two hour sitting and she wishes she would have had the courage to talk to you more at the con. Thanks again from the twins with the 17 year crush. :)

Who said no one like Wesley? I was amazing how many die hard fans you have out there that don't even post on here. DUDE YOU COULD START YOUR OWN CULT! lol j/k....kinda

I normally play at pokerroom.com, but while the server was down for maintenance, decided to give pokerstars a shot. Not bad, but think i prefer pokerroom - have you played it? give it a shot - graphics / pics / play seems a bit crisper to me
