as time goes by . . .

Anne and I took the kids to see The Incredibles this afternoon.

Holy.

Crap.

What an amazing movie! It is a brilliant example of why story is so very important. The animation is phenomenal — particularly the simulated hair and water motion — but without the amazing story, talented voice performers, and stellar direction, it would all be for nothing.

I predict that this movie will utterly destroy all previous box office records for Pixar films, and may even make a run at some top-grossing live action movies.

Yes, it is that good.

When we walked out of the theatre, there were some quotes from classic films embedded into the ground, and I saw one that captured something I wanted to share with my wife.

"Hey," I said, right after we passed it, "You had me at 'hello.'"

She looked back at me, and smiled. "I know! There are great movie quotes all over the ground here!"

"No," I said. "You had me at 'hello.'"

"Right," she said. "And there's 'Here's looking at you, kid,' and there is 'May The Force be with you,' and there is —"

"No," I said, and turned her to face me. "You," I poked her in the stomach, "had me," I poked my own stomach, "at 'hello.'"

"Oh." She paused for a second and blushed, "I like that a whole bunch."

"Well," I said, "You did."

I love it this. Even though we've been together for almost a decade, I can still make her blush.

Awww. You guys are so sappy. :)

Can't wait to see the movie! Brad Bird, the director, is awesome, and I loved his other movie, Iron Giant.

Wil, you must get your voice into one of these Pixar films! :-)

Posted by: Peter at November 5, 2004 05:54 PM

Yes, y'all are sappy but in a great, sweet way. ;)

We saw a screening of The Incredibles on Monday night, and the story was so good that after a while, we forgot we were looking at animated characters. It blew me away.

You crazy kids...so cute. :)

I love Disney/Pixar and any movies, and I can't wait to see The Incredibles.

Did you get to see Shark Tale yet? That one was really good. If you haven't, you should.

Ciao!

We got to see it last week, and I got completely sucked in. It stopped being animated. It was just a story. I smiled so much my face hurt.

(And you're at least as sappy with your sweetie as I am with mine.)

Posted by: mary at November 5, 2004 06:48 PM

Seems like you & Anne are the Incredible[s] Couple... being all romantic and mushy after all that time. So nice to see that kind of love still going on in this day 'n' age.

Posted by: edwoodca at November 5, 2004 07:01 PM

Holy shit holy shit holy shit! Wil, that was an absolutely fantastic movie. I just got out of it. Damn, it was DARK for a Pixar flick, but it was flat out incredible. A super hero going through a mid-life crisis - what a theory! And what an AWESOME spin on a bad guy of all things! Oh man, too sweet. Please, Wil, promise me, if you EVER get an offer to do a Pixar film, you have GOT to take it!

Posted by: Gary at November 5, 2004 07:16 PM

That is so sweet! You are both so very lucky to have one another! I'm looking forward to seeing the Incredibles maybe this weekend.

I can't wait to take the kids to see it! (Though, living in Oman, we will probably have to wait for a few months...or years, depending on the mood-swings of the cinemas) They've loved all of the Pixar movies...so this one should be a hit. I can't get over how talented those peeps at Pixar are. Brilliance. Btw, it's so sappy sweet how lovely you and your wife are. I love hearing stories like that....It's the chickflick in me.

Posted by: Shalloola at November 5, 2004 10:11 PM

HA! that's funny.

I came home and the first thing I typed was an IM to a friend that said.

"HOLY crap that was cool"

I love the incredibles and I so almost cried twice.

Posted by: jodilyn at November 5, 2004 10:15 PM

I loved this movie so much. It's the first movie in a long time that I want to go back and see over & over again.

It was visually stunning - the chase scene with Dash was unbelievable. The sound track was perfect. And the set design! At times, I felt like they stole the set from Our Man Flint.

And dude! The story! I actually cried at a couple of points - I'm such a girl. :P The underlining theme that being extraordinary is a bad thing is so appropriate in our current social/political climate.

Posted by: treebee at November 5, 2004 10:42 PM

I work at Borders, and the merchandising for Incredibles is EVERYWHERE. I'm glad the movie lives up to the hype.

Gotta share my favorite Incredibles fact: Shah Rukh Khan and his seven-year-old son are doing the father/son voices for the Hindi version in India. (Who is Shah Rukh Khan?? Simply the biggest movie star on the planet!) Wil, your talents are wasted in Hollywood--try Bombay!

Posted by: Jonathan at November 6, 2004 07:04 AM

*ear to ear grin* WIL, I've just got to know...are there really other men out there that are the way you are? I mean every guy gets lucky sometimes and something truly loving and romantic comes out of their mouth to melt a womans heart....but it seems to come from you like its planned and you have some control over it. Is this really possible?

TOM- I totally understand why you are curious about the whole "Wil Jr." idea. I think a lot of people are, but I really dont think Wil is going to respond to it (or even act like he saw your question). We will probably never know anything about it. Here is my reasoning: Maybe they have never talked about it or come to a decision yet, Maybe Anne doesnt want another child, Maybe they are trying (or have decided that one day they will) but hes not talking about it, maybe they are perfectly happy with their current family and dont feel the need to have a child together, or (and im really going out on a limb here) it is quite possible that Anne had her tubes tied after her second child was born so she cant have another child. My mother had her tubes tied the morning I was born, knowing that she was done and didnt want any more than 2 children. All of those are just thoughts, and we will probably never know if one of them is the case, maybe none of them are true. I am sure of one thing however: Wil is private and protective of things like that and he doesnt feel thats its something he wants to share and explain to the whole blog world. BUT, I would like to think that if one day Anne was pregnant with "Wil Jr." (or Anne Jr.) that Wil would share that joy and blessing with us. Until that day comes, we will remain curious.

Yahoo's Movie Mom has an excellent review about the Incredibles. Click below to read it.

http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hv&id=1808405432&cf=parentsguide

This cartoon is definitely for the whole family. My only complaint is that I did not like the Pixar short before the film as much as I've liked others. It was cute but not as clever as some of their previous shorts. I love the short where the old man plays chess against himself. He makes an appearance in a crowd shot in the city.

Regarding the movie quote that Wil used to swoon his wife...:-)..
one of my favorite movie quotes is from "As Good As It Gets" when Jack Nickolson's character says, "You may me want to be a better man."

Posted by: Linda at November 6, 2004 07:48 AM

The movie was great and all but how about that teaser trailer for Star Wars Episode 3 eh?

Shameful! And in public no less. I'm telling the morality police.

I saw that movie with my boyfriend and sisters and we *LOVED* it!!! So many references to comic books, it was hilarious! www.art.com has some really cool retro "The Incredibles" movie posters.

PS I think that amongst the WWDN readers, you're most known for as an author/blogger. Second as the absolutely romantic significant other a lot of girls wish they had. And third as Wesley Crusher. ;)

Posted by: Crissie at November 6, 2004 09:16 AM

So you're saying that The Incredibles lived up to its name? :)

"I love it this. Even though we've been together for almost a decade, I can still make her blush."

That ranks right up there with kittens, puppies, koala bears and babies on the "cute meter". Seeing people in love makes my heart all tingly.

Posted by: Delphine (andrea) at November 6, 2004 09:50 AM

Aw, that's so beautiful and adorkably sappy. If we were rating on a cuteness a scale of one to ten that moment earns about....a 138! You can still make her blush, *falls over at the cuteness*. Anyway, The Incredibles was good? Great, now my friend will probably drag me to it, *voice drippoing in sarcasasm* thanks Wil!

Posted by: carie whittaker at November 6, 2004 10:53 AM

Wil,
I saw that movie 2X ALREADY AND I LOVED IT SO MUCH!!! OMG!!!! I was laughing at the "dinner scene" with the two kids fighting (okay no more spoilers) but that's one of my favs!!!

The movie kicked MAJOR ass and its definately a MUST SEE!!! I totally forgot at times I was watching a cartoon the way it was real. The explosions were real. The only way I could tell it was fake was the ears were closed up and I was thinking in the movie, "Are these puppets like Team America"? but it was just so FRIGGAN awesome!!! *clap clap clap* My dad kids about me seeing animated movies a numberous amount of times but c'mon I love animation and the whole process. Makes me feel bad I didn't complete it at the Art Institute of Houston (but Animation especially 3-D animation is SO TOUGH!) not many people realize how hard it is to draw people and the process and wait to animate it. Rendering is a pain in the ass!! *rolls eyes*

This movie has NO cursing in it and I wouldn't advise small kids under 6 to watch it if loud noises scare them. Because the way the movie came out it was loud!! :)

I love the entire thing and I WANT To see more!!! :) (c'mon where's the sequel!!!!) :)

out of all the characters, "Violet was my favorite" and I guess b/c in a way I can relate to her! Just too bad we all can't go invisible when needed!

Posted by: Shayne at November 6, 2004 12:24 PM

I have found each succeeding Pixar film better than the previous one. So if this is even HALF as good as "Finding Nemo," it's going to be great. Plus, I absolutely adored "The Iron Giant," so I suspect there is going to be some incredible Brad Bird magic here. I'm going to see it tomorrow. I can't wait!

Posted by: Scott T at November 6, 2004 02:20 PM

Linda:
As a big Pixar fan and a fairly liberal nursery school, I wouldn't say, "This cartoon is definitely for the whole family." One of the first things I said when I left was, "I think I wouldn't take kids under eight or so." There are a couple of dark bits that I can see really disturbing kids below kindergarten age, especially, but I won't give them away here.

"I did not like the Pixar short before the film as much as I've liked others."

Nor I. Didn't really work for me the way the Birds one (for example) did.

Posted by: mary at November 6, 2004 06:11 PM

I just saw the movie myself, and it is totally AWESOME!!! You have to get yourself a job on the next Pixar film. You would rock at it, and they have the golden touch, so you know it would be a kick-ass movie to boot.

Posted by: Scott at November 7, 2004 01:59 AM

When I saw syndrome he reminded me of the "freaky" weird fans at Sci fi conventions! :) LOL!!

I got a question what year is this show supposed to be set?

I say 1970's b/c of the retro house and car...b/c it looked like when "Syndrome"/Buddy was little it was more like a 1950's haircut or something. Also the clothes "Elastigirl" wore (as housewife) reminded me of the 1960's or 1970's type of clothes.

I was watching the women Incredibles and thinking, "their legs are so flemsy are they are going fall apart?" I mean it looked so much like paper!

I'm so glad this movie is a sucess and I may go see it again. I am studying the animation. Especially at certain parts of the movie. I like watching how the mouth moves and how certain parts of a object interact with other objects like the glass in the car breaking after Mr.Incredible breaks it.

ALL of this so fascinates me! As I told in Wil's blog the first time I wish I would have persued my education in animation but its VERY competitive! Also the math is too much for me to learn! :(

I am good at art but the drawing and perspective of visual arts can be VERY tricky and difficult and as well as rendering!

This is a animator wannabe's dream! (this movie) and I hope there are more like it...I hope "Cars" turns out to be a success as well.

Posted by: Shayne at November 7, 2004 05:12 AM

I saw "The Incredibles" Friday night and it really was awesome. I've been hooked on all of Pixar's movies for both story and animation technique. Glad you mentioned it on the blog.

Hey Wil,
I wasn't going to see The Incredibles now I'm planning on it. Thanks for the recommendation. Many movies nowdays disappoint me so I only usually see films.....

Posted by: 1cutebird at November 9, 2004 09:32 AM

Personally, I didn't like the movie and found it void of emotion. The only thing entertaining was Edna Mode. Odd that Brad kept that character to himself (he voiced it apparently).

The film was too intense and even violent at times and dealt mercilessly with some serious themes of suicide and infidelity. PG animated kids movie folks? "I don't think so".

I have little respect for Brad Bird as an entertainer. Shame does not equal entertain. I do not need a movie that over values family or 'family togetherness'. Kids do grow up and have their own families. Whatever happened to the lessons of 'letting go' in Nemo?

If you love to be moralized at, this is your film. If you've enjoy directors/writes and thus characters who only understand life through the lens of 'inadequacy' and how to overcome that, then this is your flick too (pay attention to the imagery in the film if you watch it again, Freud would have fun).

I couldn't disagree with you more Will. This movie will NOT blow previous Pixar box office results away. This is a serious (pun intended) departure for Pixar. In my opinion, word of mouth will tank this film (relatively speaking, it will still do well, but not compared to Nemo for example).

Sorry, but I'm really tired of artists thinking they are entertainers and shaming anyone into believing that wanting to be entertained is morally obtuse. This film was not funny or entertaining but a vanity pic for someone who has inadequacy issues.

Posted by: Jose Eber at November 9, 2004 10:23 AM

Btw, the movie was awesome too. =)

Posted by: Anne at November 9, 2004 11:16 AM

I agree. The Incredibles is a great movie. I liked it better than Finding Nemo. Some of the movie's detractors seem to not like the fact that this one focused more on the action and previous Pixar films. However, I'm a big action movie fan so I liked it.

Posted by: Willie at November 9, 2004 11:54 AM

Locus has a great review. One interesting point they make is that because of the animation process, Pixar's movies all have to have the script finished & polished before the movie is made. As a result, they're actually written, not cobbled together by committee. Interesting to see that what can be viewed as animation's greatest weakness (its expensive production) has become its saving grace.

I can't wait to see this movie, I'm a big fan of Pixar shows. Dreamworks has really turned me off, a couple of their most recent films - Shrek 2 and A Sharks Tale - were a joke, my biggest complaint is how far they went with product placement and advertising. When I watch Pixar films I think of the old Disney cartoons. With Dreamworks I think corporate sponsorship.

You know what sucks is that I can never see your shows. I live in Maine. I think you are a great actor, but then again you will always be my favorite actor even if you never read this.

That is so sweet, Wil, I think I'm going to barf. Heh, just kidding. Really, I want to find a guy that will say things like that to me. Because it's sweet, and cute, and pretty much everything a lot of girls (including myself) want. Unfair.

Thanks for your view on "The Incredibles". I wasn't planning on seeing it, but I might have to do that now. At a matinee, because I'm one broke girl.

I think the next time your'e in Dallas(Plano) you need to hold a seminar for men on how to be romantic instead of talking about your book? What do you think? I know I'd make mine attend! ROFL

I thought it was great too! When a film like that comes along, that everyone can enjoy.... and the physical comedy gets me every time. And that little designer lady?!?!
