« on being thankful | Main | defame your stereo » November 29, 2004reminderI missed the ACME show on Saturday night, because I hurt my neck so badly on Friday, I couldn't even stand up Saturday morning. More on that later. As if the pain in my neck and shoulders wasn't bad enough, I'm trying my best not to get sick, now. I think it's just the dry air from my heater and the weather the last few days, but my throat is sore and scratchy, and my sinuses are all dry and ouchy . . . so I'm just going to put up this quick reminder and get back into bed:

Have your wife make you some chicken soup. My Grandmother always gave me chicken soup when I wasn't well and it , beleive it or not, usually worked. Posted by: Rick Krause at November 29, 2004 09:43 AMFinally an OC signing close to home! Yes! Posted by: josh at November 29, 2004 09:45 AMDamn, I hope your neck is OK and that the bug trying to catch you, doesn't. Get well soon, and have fun with the book signing and the shows. Based on your health issues, this time I won't wish that you break a leg or anything else. No, no, no! Given the past holiday, it should be TURKEY soup! We were just up in Altadena, yesterday, to enjoy our friend, Mayr Ellen's, famous turkey soups. I should have her send the leftovers to your house. :) Feel better soon. Oh, and if you are still sick for your Tuesday reading, just play a recording of yourself. Then, all you'll have to do is sit there, sign autographs, and look cute. Posted by: Valerie S at November 29, 2004 09:52 AMNotes for the Tuesday, Barnes & Noble signing in Huntington Beach: -I called the phone# listed by Wil and got the voicemail of some PR person. To speak to a live person, try their main line at (714)897-8781. -I clicked on the web site Wil highlighted, but could find no listing of Wil's event in any of the menus. How annoying! Somehow, I don't think he's doing the pajama-rama toddler storytime! -I called the location (at the above ph#), told them of their Wheaton event ommision, and was assured that it was indeed a scheduled event. -Its a "wristband" event, with distribution starting at 4pm. The first 30 wristbands will go to Barnes & Noble members. Good luck, everyone. Seeya there! Posted by: Valerie S at November 29, 2004 10:17 AMFeel better soon dude. Sending healing mojo your way... Posted by: Robert in Austin at November 29, 2004 10:25 AMFeel better soon dude. Sending healing mojo your way... Posted by: Robert in Austin at November 29, 2004 10:25 AMWil, What ever you have, I've had it for the last 4 days. The 4th day is the day it starts clearing up. It would figure that tomorrow that you would be reading to everyone who's at the signing, which, in addition, I'll be in attendance. Are cameras/video recorders allowed? I'll also be at ACME on Wednesday night. I have to call today for the reservations for my girl and myself. I guess I'm lucky I didnt go Saturday night then, I was feeling like hell that night. How did you hurt your neck anyway? Lets hope that all of your sinus and throat problems are just due to the 50+ MPH wind that has been happening the last couple days. But on the downside, if it is the wind... it's supposed to stay windy for the next couple days. Anyway, I'll be seeing you on Tuesday and Wednesday if you're not too sick to go. I've even taking off work 30 minutes earlier so I can be there on time. Good luck Wil, and take care of that throat of yours for all of us that are going to be there tomorrow! -Evin Posted by: Evin at November 29, 2004 10:31 AMBe well. Posted by: watcher652 at November 29, 2004 10:45 AMOuch! Hope you're back on two steady feet real soon. Posted by: Neil B at November 29, 2004 10:58 AMI always sound like a broken record this time of year, when cold season starts, wanting to tell people about the Chinese miracle anti-cold herbs I like. So, here's one more repeat. :-) The Chinese traditional herbal formulas Yin Chiao and Gan Mao Ling are the best things I've ever come across for fighting off a cold. My husband and I did an accidental experiment one year when we both came down with the same cold at the same time. He tried to tough his way through it without taking anything; I took the Chinese herbs. I was mildly uncomfortable (sniffles and a scratchy throat) for 3 or 4 days until it passed; he was semi-conscious on the sofa, groaning occasionally, for a long weekend, and was miserable for at least another week or so. I like the Dr. Shen brand - made in the US, they contain no drugs, dyes, pharmaceuticals, animal products, or unlisted ingredients. Standard disclaimer: my only financial connection with the company consists of me giving them my money in exchange for herbs and acupuncture. :-) There are many other brands as well, so whatever label looks trustworthy to you is probably worth checking out. Posted by: EmilyB at November 29, 2004 11:01 AMYou of all people should know you can't go Warp 11. Certainly not inside a planet's atmosphere. In other news, drink ridiculous amounts of water and take plenty of zinc, echinacea and goldenseal. And feel better!!! Posted by: Jex at November 29, 2004 11:01 AMTry not to move your neck much... your body doesn't do well trying to heal an injury and fight off an infection simultaneously anyway, and immobilizing your neck will make one of those jobs easier. Posted by: kelli217 at November 29, 2004 11:13 AMHey, Wil is a crossword clue in today's Yahoo Games crossword. 32-across, "Wheaton of 'Stand By Me'". Three letters, hmm.... Posted by Ken G at November 29, 2004 11:24 AM Second the Chinese Herbs (Wild Oats has them) and the Neti pot (sinus irrigation) and get thee to an accupuncturist or a Naturopath! No foil hats- it really works. Sounds like your body is rebelling against your pace- Feel better soon! Posted by: sam at November 29, 2004 11:37 AMI hope you get better soon that has gotta hurt!Good thing you had a nice thanksgiving with your family as I hope everyone did Take Care. Posted by: Dan L at November 29, 2004 11:54 AMCareful, strep throat is making it's way around LA. Had it a week before Thanksgiving. Not fun. Take care. Posted by: Jonathan at November 29, 2004 12:00 PMPositive MOJO and get well wishes to ya, Wil. Neck injuries... so painful... rolling over in bed... getting up you lead with the head/neck... OUCH! Vicodin is what I was prescribed for my neck "spasms" as he called it. Took a week to feel better. At least you've got a loving wife and kids to take care of ya. Posted by: edwoodca at November 29, 2004 12:47 PMawwww I hope you will be feeling better ASAP! Dang but you are a busy boy lately. Just ah.. try not to overwork yourself ok? Neck injury. Owie. Go back to bed. Oh yeah, feel better soon :\ Will, Sorry to hear about your neck. I had the same exact thing happen to me a few months ago and it was the most awful thing I experienced in quite some time. I even went to the emergency room when the pain wouldn't let up even if I was lying down.. They told me I had a stiff neck :). I ended up spending a grand total of five days doing absolutely nothing but taking muscle relaxers and watching every DVD in my library I hadn't gotten around to watching. Hope you get better soon! Posted by: Lon Seidman at November 29, 2004 01:31 PMNice to see you on Slashdot too! You're making the rounds! :D Posted by: SeekingPlumb at November 29, 2004 01:34 PMYou're leaving HB at 8:30 to be in H'wood by 9? Call 'em and tell them you're going to be late. Just not possible to do that run in 30 minutes. (And don't tell me your car "can do the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs" or I'll smack you. Har.) I can't get to the B&N by 4 for wristbands. Hope I'm not left outside on the sidewalk this time. This is my 4th attempt! I must emerge victorious! \m/ Posted by: lomara at November 29, 2004 01:53 PMI'll be praying for your health and healing and I'll keep you in prayer God bless you Mr. Wheaton , now don't for get to drink lots of orange juice and take vitimans. Keep well. Posted by: Nathalie Marroquin at November 29, 2004 01:59 PMIf'n I was you, I'd be thankful that Diesel Sweeties mentioned my Brand New Movie! They did so right here. Dig it. Posted by: DarthVerso at November 29, 2004 02:46 PMJust made my reservations for Wednesday night. See you there Wil. I guess I kinda have to go now :) Posted by: Evin at November 29, 2004 03:04 PMAs my family doctor used to tell me when I was growing up and caught a cold (which was about every three weeks), stay warm and get plenty of rest; drink lots of fluid (doesn't matter what it is, as long as you like drinking it--and if it's alcoholic, as long as you're not taking anything that it would react badly with), take aspirin/Tylenol/ibuprofen for fever (also good for pains in the neck), and call the doctor if it doesn't go away in a week or if symptoms get worse. I also recommend the zinc lozenges, although they leave a nasty aftertaste in the mouth (another good reason to have something good around to drink). They really do seem to speed the healing process. Posted by: Michael at November 29, 2004 03:22 PMBoo! Throwing some {{{healing mojo}}} your way. Feel better, rest up and have a great show/signing/everything else. How in the world did you hurt your neck?! Posted by: angie k at November 29, 2004 04:33 PMWil- get well soon. i am so excited for wednesday. you are lucky: a Borders employee buying books at Barnes and Nobel, our biggest competitor. Only for you. i meant tuesday. Posted by: Jessie at November 29, 2004 05:18 PMWil, I have three suggestions: Just make it so. Freeman :) Posted by: Freeman in Louisiana at November 29, 2004 05:32 PMTwo simple words for your cold, dude... ZICAM You buy it over the counter and the best one is the ZICAM Nasal Swabs. I haven't had a cold in 2 years using this stuff and we have 2 kids! The science actually makes sense, too. This ZICAM stuff mimic's the shape of the cells in your nose so that the cold virus' that come in have about a 70% chance of attaching to the ZICAM instead of your body. The virus can't reproduce in the ZICAM so it dies. (Along with all of the symptoms) If you take it within the first 24 hours of the cold, you actually can get rid of it. If you take it later into the cold, it reduces the symptoms pretty drastically. You can also use the stuff as kind of a "vaccine" if you know you're going into a situation where there will be sick people. Anyway, take care and good luck with the HB signing. Ignatz Posted by: Ignatz at November 29, 2004 06:39 PMMr. Wheaton, Looking forward to seating you in the back of my enforcment vehicle. Sincerly, Okay enough with all the lame star trek crap. Hey Wil just rest up, and take it easy. And don't over do it. So when its showtime you can be in top form, or somewhat top form. And drink a lot of fluids. Posted by: Terry at November 29, 2004 07:51 PMhey wil, You know, all these announcements are nice if you live on the west coast. How about you get yourself out here in the midwest. You know, like Minneapolis/St. Paul (Twin Cities). I agree not to hackle you. Well, not too much. Oh, hell, I'd be rude and you'd have to have security carry me off. But hey! that's just me. Posted by: Rook at November 29, 2004 09:09 PMWil, you have just been Slashdotted! http://interviews.slashdot.org/interviews/04/11/29/1342247.shtml?tid=192&tid=97&tid=214&tid=129&tid=11&tid=10 Posted by: John at November 29, 2004 09:25 PMAwww. Do feel better, Wil! Hey, do you have questions to ask Wil? Wander over to Slashdot and post them http://interviews.slashdot.org/. They are interviewing our very own Mr Wheaton - one question per comment and they will post the responses after they get them back! -- To Wil: Get a humidifier and some rest. You might be suffering from I'm-a-busy-guy-syndrome! Stay away from fast food (you've seen Supersize Me, right? You don't want to end up like that guy. Chicken soup always works wonders for me and lots of rest! Regarding your back and neck pain, do you have a good chiropractor? I've never gone myself but I've heard that they can do wonders. You live in California -- I'm sure you have all sorts of treatment options, even alternative -- I'll just have to send some mojo your way! Posted by: Linda at November 29, 2004 10:10 PMThere is no way you will leave at 8.30 and make any part of the Valley by 9, no matter how fast you drive. I'm a musician, and I get into this kind of trap all too often, so I know. You'll be late, but you'll be alive. Posted by: Rick at November 29, 2004 10:25 PMWhy do people always dish out chicken soup when someone is poorly? What happens if the person is a vegetarian? Does vegetable soup still work? Greetings from the U.K. Hey Wil: Here's some good mojo flowing your way all the way from Puerto Rico! Get well soon!!! Posted by: Ana Marylee at November 30, 2004 02:46 AMHey Wil, I'm having decent results with my current bug by steeping a chunk of fresh ginger root with my decaf green tea bag and a little honey. And you hurt your neck when you turned over in your sleep. Everyone does it at least once in their life. Your head starts turning first then your neck gets stuck with the effort of pulling the rest of you body too. And if you don't make it all the way over, the phrase "My neck hurts, I must have slept funny" comes to mind. Healing mojo cominatcha from Pittsburgh, PA. Hopefully you can do a signing here sometime. Posted by: KarenS at November 30, 2004 04:54 AMOuch! Feel better! Posted by: Lara at November 30, 2004 06:19 AMGood Morning Mr. Wheaton, You should have fresh tomato soup... Vitamin C does wonders when it comes from tomatoes and there is no meat in there to get in the way :P. Oranges are also very good, don't drink orange juice - causes too much mucus like milk. Some hot tea with Echinacea, zinc and antioxidants will also help you to heal. You will also need lots of luf from your family. When you're psychologically fit, it's easier to heal. Also, keep your head and neck warm to help relieve any aches and pains. Hope you feel better! I just nursed my husband back to health this weekend. Thursday in New York was cold and he was sick Friday, Sat and Sunday - monday he was back to his normal routine (work/running/etc). Please take care; we don't want you to miss your signing or your performance! ~Wyn ^_^ Posted by: Wyn at November 30, 2004 06:33 AMThere's an idea for your next book! 'Remedies for Sickness and Colds' by Wil Wheaton... Posted by: sally at November 30, 2004 10:19 AMAs far as the cold goes -- studies have shown that if you just suffer through it, a cold lasts about a week. However, if you take various holistic, homeopathic, and/or herbal remedies, a cold usually lasts only about seven days. Posted by: kelli217 at November 30, 2004 10:53 AMFeel better soon! This is my first time visiting your website. It's in my favorites. @}->-- Posted by: Alexis at November 30, 2004 12:00 PMYeah, what Rook said. 'Cept it would work better for me if it was Chicago instead of Mpls/St. Paul. Posted by: Michael at November 30, 2004 12:12 PMHey Wil, I'm going to throw my hat into the 'help Wil remedy' bin. For your neck problems, I do yoga. It stregnthens you and makes you more flexiable at the same time, its also something you can do with your wife. It won't help you this time (though it could work out some kinks immediatly), but you are much less likely to injure yourself or your muscles if you are strong and flexiable. AND you get to watch women in tight clothing bend in really neet ways. /I'm not a freaky granola girl, I swear, it really is good, tough, excercize Posted by: Toriko at November 30, 2004 12:31 PMUgh, I have The Cold now, too, I think I got it on our wonderful Thanksgiving trip :-(. Feel better Wil -- Breathing Thyme Yogi Tea has been a godsend for mine, maybe it will help you too. Gonna look for those Chinese Herbs everyone's recommended, too, myself. I chime in too, that the neck aches can be because you're working too hard, going too fast. Slow down, chill a little, you'll feel better! Posted by: Linda at November 30, 2004 04:22 PMI know this is probably a little late, but an old boss of mine said to gargle with Listerine when you start to get a sore throat. He said it would shorten the amount of time you are sick as well as fix the sore throat problem sooner. Well, it works for me. I use the minty Listerine as the original stuff is just plain gross. File that away for next time Wil. -gil Posted by: Gil at November 30, 2004 05:29 PMWent to the reading/signing. Thanks! Got home, saw an email from eReader.com showing their latest releases and asked myself, "so why doesn't Wil 'Just a Geek' Wheaton publish his book as an ebook?" Note to self: White Bronco's travel slowly on the Northbound 405, thus, Wil would not be driving one to get up to Hollywood in a 45 minute time span from Hunting Beach. (If you weren't at the signing you wouldnt understand.) Hope you made it to rehersals in time Wil! Traffic wasn't too bad when I left. Singing and reading last night was fantastic! For being as under the weather as you are, I couldnt tell the difference. After our short conversation, you looked at me and said "Thank you very much", and my reply without thinking aobut it was "No, Thank you..." And I'll attempt to explain that a little. I was thanking you specifically for not only writing the book, and reading from your book, but I was thanking you for letting "us" be an active part of your life (well, your blog anyway). And I think I can safely say for the majority who post here, that we all thank you for being a part of our lives, as much as we're a part of yours. Ok, enough sappy crap. You're a great verbal story teller Wil, and I'm looking forward to more of your signing/reading sessions, as well as your on stage performances. I'll be in the audiance tonight at ACME, and now that I know about it, I'll have to become a frequent visitor to ACME. I'm always looking for stuff to do any given night, and ACME might just be the place to fill the voids. Break a leg tonight Wil!
