« i feel so strange looking out the door | Main | spin the dial » February 18, 2005i am the ghost of troubled joeI wrapped CSI on Wednesday. A brief audioblog about it is here. I watched the show last night with Anne and the kids, and drove them crazy with comments like, "Oh! Behind that wall is where the craft service table is!" and "See where that corridor curves? That's the end of the set and if you take a right you'll walk right out of the stage." and "Jorja Fox is even more beautiful in person." and "I was totally in that set on Monday!" They endured my enthusiasm with patience and good humor. Heh. Anybody else see it? It was seriously the most disturbing episode I've ever seen. Lots of people have asked what flavor of CSI it is, and when it will air. It's the original CSI (the one in Las Vegas) and it was apparently going to air the first week of March, but it looks like CSI is going to be preempted by March Madness, and it will air later. But! You can see my World Poker Tour Hollywood Home Game on the Travel Channel on Sunday February 20th. I hardly ever caught cards that night, and I hope I don't look like a total dope when it's cut together. I'm playing in the WPT invitational in less than a week, and I haven't sat at a poker table since November . . . I haven't played NLHE in even longer, and I don't know when I'll have time to get my game back up to speed between now and then. I have figured out that I need an extra four hours in each day, so I have time to write, be a husband and stepfather, and play poker and D&D. Can someone get on that for me? Thanks. My latest Games of our Lives is up. This week, I look at a Space Invaders bootleg called Cosmic Monsters:
Sketch is doing really well! I'm leaving in about twenty minutes to take him down to the kitty cardiologist for a re-check, but I am very hopeful that he'll get a check-plus from his doctor. He's eating, grooming himself regularly, and his breathing is between 24 and 36 (depending on how much he's been playing with his Kitty Hooch mouse, of course.) My friend Kevin is in an art show at the Richard Heller Gallery Saturday night. Kevin is a fantastic artist, and all you Westsiders should check it out. Oh! I'm officially added to the lineup at the Creation Grand Slam show in Pasadena March 11 - 13. You'll notice that March 12 is a Saturday, which means if you're coming to town for the convention, you could take a field trip to Hollywood that night and catch me and two other EarnestBorg9 cast members in our supermegaawesome sketch comedy show Acme Love Machine. It's raining here, and there's a pretty strong breeze blowing across my backyard. There's a tiny hummingbird with a shiny green breast sitting on a telephone wire that connects to the eave just above my office window . . . the wire's moving all over the place, but he's not letting go for anything. That's cool. Glad to hear Sketch is doing so great. Thanks for the heads up on the CSI airing. We're all looking forward to it. I'm considering going to GrandSlam, but it's a bit pricey. (Are you doing the brunch thing too?) I hope you consider doing ComicCon this year as well. cheers, and maybe catch you at Acme soon. woo! Posted by: lomara at February 18, 2005 10:29 AM
Sounds like you had a lot of fun on CSI man, can't wait to see it. And I know how painful it can be for the family when you break the illusion of something they're watching, so at least they endured it with good humor (having worked on fighter jets, I used to blast Top Gun when my ex wife was watching it :P) Posted by: Genesyn at February 18, 2005 10:32 AM
Wil, Congrats on finishing up the CSI run. I am a new fan of the show, just started watching it about two or three months ago and we're now catching up on the stories. Glad to hear Sketch is doing better, more Mojo from my fat cat Buster and me coming his way to keep getting better! Good luck, and hope you can keep us all updated on when the ep of CSI will air. Thanks! Posted by: miskaffon at February 18, 2005 10:34 AM
When I read the first few lines of this I thought I had missed the show because it was on last night or something. I panicked. You have GOT to let us know as soon as you have an air date. And speaking of conventions (you did, not me) any plans to attend CIII? It’s the last big one you know. It’s all over after that. Plus, anyone who goes can see all us geeks in the 501st dressed up as stormtroopers falling down stairs. Doesn’t that sound like fun? at February 18, 2005 10:34 AM
I can't wait to see you on CSI...I taped it last night because my hubby is on duty overseas right now and I just am way too wimpy to watch it alone! Glad Sketch is doing better!!! Posted by: Noodle Noggin at February 18, 2005 10:34 AM
Greetings from Dublin (Check out my blog for pics etc),
Great bout sketch, knew he'd be alright cos the condition is rarely fatal. at February 18, 2005 10:37 AM
Last night's CSI was seriously disturbing, but as always intriguing to watch. Can't wait to see your episode! Very glad to hear Sketch is doing better. :) Posted by: Valerie at February 18, 2005 10:38 AM
Wait a minute. I did miss it? It aired last night? Will it be on in a rerun anytime? Posted by: MaraJade at February 18, 2005 11:01 AM
Hi Wil, I've been reading your blog for awhile and congrats on the CSI job! Heheh, I keep wanting to say to someone "hey! I know someone that is going to be on CSI!". Of course I do not really know you, but its neat reading your blog every day. Please, please, please, let us know when your episode is going to air! Big neon lights and large letters would suffice on your blog. I don't usually catch CSI every week- but now that Survivor is back on, we are Tivoing the other channel we usually watch and are watching CSI until we fall asleep. Anyways, thanks for blogging. at February 18, 2005 11:03 AM
Hey Wil, That is so awesome about how Sketch is doing. Glad to hear the fat guy is doing great. And about the CSI thing where you pointed out stuff to your family? Dude, I would be doing the exact same thing! I think its really cool when you walk on a TV set after watching the show, and then watching the show after being on the set you get a really cool perspective as to how the TV magic happens. But of course you know all that! LOL Can't wait to see the show! Posted by: Snowball at February 18, 2005 11:11 AM
Last night's episode just got more and more disturbing the more they uncovered. Brrrr! Very weird. I have to say, the most disturbing thing was the gal having her child taken away for 5 years, with the guy stringing her along with promises, and it turned out the child had been put up for adoption 5 years ago! And they never really resolved that at the end of the episode (which I suppose is appropriate, since CSI doesn't really get into the whole trial and sentencing part of things). I seriously had to go check on my 4 year old son in his room after watching that episode. I really, really hate it when bad things happen to children on these shows. Anyway, I'm glad the shoot went well for you, and I can't wait to see your episode. And it's good to hear that Sketch is doing so well. Gotta love the power of kitty mojo! Posted by: Rodan at February 18, 2005 11:12 AM
well arent we just full of information today. is the art gallery thing in Santa Monica going to be open at all other than saturday? i would love to go but i work that night... i'm a sucker for contemporary art. still need to get to the Love Machine; i promise i will one of these days. take care Posted by: Jessie at February 18, 2005 12:45 PM
Yay Sketch! Good kitty! You be good for the doctor today, OK?

If you'd like, I can TiVo the WPT episode and get it to DVD. Posted by: BadBlood at February 18, 2005 12:59 PM
Poker is Sunday night? No good, Carnivàle is on. Ah, but I see your Poker episode is on again Thursday night (formerly known as Must See TV night), much better. Sure, Carnivàle is also repeated during the week but I make a point of putting fiction before reality. Posted by: extra88 at February 18, 2005 01:03 PM
I'm so glad to hear that Sketch is doing better. That's the whole reason I registered...just so I could let you know how much my thoughts were with you and your family and your kittyboy. Peace, at February 18, 2005 01:59 PM
Great audio blog post Wil. Good to hear that Sketch is doing better, and it's cool that you enjoyed CSI. I don't watch CSI, but I'll check that one out. Posted by: mcsey at February 18, 2005 02:01 PM
Thanks for the update on Sketch, it's good to hear that he is doing better. It's too bad that you didn't catch many cards when you played the WPT before, but you must not have done too badly if you are going back next week for their invitational. I suppose we will just have to watch the show to see how much of a "dope" you look like. :-) Sorry I won't be able to make it to the con, but I do hope to get out there to see an ACME show. Until then, "may all your cards be live and all your pots be monsters." (Thanks, Mike Sexton.) Posted by: Dave Westbay at February 18, 2005 03:30 PM

I've only been reading your blog for about a month or two, but from what I read of your posts, I really like you! You seem like such a great guy. :-) I can't WAIT to see the CSI episode with you in it. Glad to hear Sketch is better! And remember, cats do have NINE lives. :-) Posted by: lucy at February 18, 2005 04:45 PM
First, AWESOME news about Sketch! Cats are very sensitive to the love their owners give them, and I know that fatguy is feeling better because of all of the love and warmth that you and your family have been giving him! Second, I just can't wait to see this CSI!!! Everything that I'm hearing sounds like you were totally in the zone with your acting! I'm keeping my fingers crossed that some other Hollywood bigshots will see the episode, watch your performance, and then remember what a damned good actor you really are!!! Pretty nifty about CSI, Wil. My first time commenting on your blog...been reading for a while:) I've been going to a pretty cool house NLHE game that has a tournament coming up in March if you're interested...small buy-in (for the not-yet-independently-wealthy entertainment industry geeks that we are!) but it's a fun group. Of course, that won't help you by next week, but it's a fun way to spend a couple of hours every now and then:) Posted by: googrl at February 18, 2005 08:21 PM
congrats on the continued health of your cat, Sketch. That was a real spin for you I am sure Let us know when that CSI will be on, you might just get a bump Not sure I can do much, the only Neilson in our neighborhood is a school, no TVs there ;-) So, can you drag the sorry butt of Matthew Perry through the mud playing poker yet? I am a bus driver at the airport in Phx, and my friends think I am nerd that I have broadband, but yet look at your blog all the time. YOu are so down to earth and I look forward to see you in Phx. Hey Wil, I gotta comment... Your site is so "REAL" and down to earth! I have been checking in every now and then to see what you are up to both technology, career and your stories of your life. I laugh a lot, I can relate at times...and generally just think that you have a very solid charector foundation. You were obviously raised well! It is interesting how you can be so open as a celebrity while *never* crossing that line of TOO MUCH INFO. Amazing really, many celibrities seem to fall into one of the extremes of too much/too little. America loves our actors! regardless. Anyway my point... I am so happy for you. Congrats on the CSI gig...I will be watching for your episode. Life is good... Would say I am a fan...but you know that has roots in fanatic (ew! seen too many weird TV shows about that) so I will say I am a supporter and enjoy your work! I have always thought you a talented actor and I think you have more work ahead of you. Terri Posted by: gosilent at February 19, 2005 12:41 PM

Woot! I can't wait to see that episode of CSI. Actually, I haven't watched that show in a while. I need to get back into it. I'm glad to hear Sketch is doing so well! I unexpectedly had to have my oldest kitty (11 yrs old) put down yesterday. It was so sad. They really are a part of your family. I held him and talked to him. He didn't stop purring until he was finally gone. Anyway, I hope Sketch continues to improve! I'll keep sending mojo! And good luck at the WPT invitational! :o) Posted by: LolaGabanna at February 19, 2005 01:37 PM
First of all, Welcome Back Sketch! Glad to her Fat Guy is recovering well, and back into something of a regular routine! Listened to the Audio Blog post. You can really tell how much you loved working on CSI, Wil. Even though the acting thing has gained some new life, I still think you're going to make a much better author (not to take away from your acting skills, you RAWK) in the long run. Have you considered maybe a screenplay for a short film, or a pilot for a TV series? Your grasp of writing and character development seems perfect for it! You're a really passionate guy, and it shows in everything you do, especially your writing, and I'm sure it'll come through when the episode of CSI airs. Great stuff as always! Hey Wil! So a little off topic from the CSI awesomeness and coolness about the cat health... I don't know how last night stacked up against other "Love Machine" nights, but just had to give an unbiased endorsement that the show was freakin' brilliant. Man, it is so good to see great sketch comedy in this town. That office dance sequence was worth the price of admission. And I can hardly wait to watch for your tells on the World Poker tour. Tight comedy. Incredible direction. And the girls were actually funny instead of the usual dancer types trying to do sketch that you find here in Hollywood. There was not a single weak link in the ensemble. Everyone held their own and the bar was pretty darn high. Great work! Keep it up! I'm hauling folks out to see it again! After watching WPT tonight, I don't think I'd ever want to play poker with LeVar: he can be downright scary sometimes... Posted by: gjbivin at February 20, 2005 10:23 PM
Mad props to Wil for playing for the EFF! It doesn't have the same emotional tug as the Pediatric Cancer Foundation (Kids! With cancer! The big "C"! Can there be anything worse?) but it is very important nonetheless. No shame in giving Andrea your money, bro. She was hawt! And playing with her hair like that? It was over before it started. You did good, kid. You made my TiVo wishlist proud. (I have no idea what that means...) Posted by: wwood at February 20, 2005 10:34 PM
I was excited to randomly find you playing poker tonight (while flipping channels at the in-laws'), but my oldest daughter was even more excited to see her friend Levar from Reading Rainbow (five year-olds; they have no understanding of fame). Posted by: IsaacB2 at February 20, 2005 11:27 PM

Wil, Great job on WPT last night...That was a fun game to watch! You should have heard us yelling and screaming during the bluffing! It was wild! Congrats on CSI, that will be the best CSI ever, I am sure :-) Still sending mojo to fat boy and family! Tim in Nor Cal Posted by: TimCalif at February 21, 2005 09:27 AM
Just a few random thoughts about the WPT show: Other than the hand you lost to Andrea, I thought your play was quite respectable. Your play at the beginning of the show, where you pushed LeVar out with your pair of sevens, was classic. I knew when it got down to three players and you were short stacked, the next hand would be do or die for you. You just couldn't do anything with a K2 suited without help from the board, which didn't come. Still, I didn't feel like you made any other major missteps. You also looked like you were having fun, especially compared to LeVar, who looked like he was taking it more seriously than necessary. He is a pretty good player, though, I have to give him that. Congrats on lasting longer than he did! Good luck in the invitational this week. With a few good cards, and your skills, I predict you'll be right up there at the top of the heap. at February 21, 2005 09:36 AM
Wil you did awesome in WPT! You should absolutely be proud of yourself and you represented us monkeys well because we are proud of you too! I would love to see you play in that Bravo game. The players don't look so intense (LeVar)! Hey guys, lets start a campaign to get our Wil on that Celebrity Poker Showdown! Posted by: vicmoore70 at February 21, 2005 09:54 AM
Hey wil... Watched your WPT episode and I thought you played rather well except for that one hand that I'm sure you're kicking yourself for. I put a little write up over at Up For Poker. Any analysis is bound to be a little unfair because we only see a small sample of hands. I enjoyed watching you... too bad you didn't have the luck that Mekhi had... and too bad you couldn't drop the HAMMER!! Posted by: CJ at February 21, 2005 10:14 AM
Hey Wil, I did catch the WPT thing last night. You did fine. Getting out at number three wasn't so bad. Pretty good I thought. If I were a celebrity, I don't know if I would have made it that far, but who knows. How long ago was that taped? I don't remember seeing it before, and I usually catch almost all the WPT shows on the Travel channel. One question though... Was Lavar peeved at something? He seemed kind of miffed all through the show. Anyway, good luck in the invitational. I think you should do well. Posted by: Live2Dive at February 21, 2005 03:35 PM
Hey Wil, I've been reading your blog for a while now, and am amazed at just how normal of a guy you are, for someone that I've only known on my tv screen... It's kind of amazing to me how easy it is to just tap a few keys, and have access to you. Anyways, I just wanted to say congratulations on the CSI gig. I'm looking forward to seeing the episode, and I'm glad to hear that Sketch is doing better too. -N. Main Posted by: ndmain27 at February 21, 2005 06:40 PM

Hey Wil! It's great to hear you'll be on CSI in march, the wife and I watch it often. Its been awhile since we've chatted, I dunno if I told you but we had a daugther, shes 7 months old now. Her name is Shelby. Have you been playing any MMORPGs lately? I've been into World of Warcraft, you should check it out. Take care Wil. Posted by: Raemus at February 22, 2005 06:44 AM
Hey Wil! Watched the WPT Sunday night, and you played great (yeah, with the exception of that one particular hand). Darwin got alot of monkey face time, which is cool, and you played really well against LeVar, which must have felt somewhat good, given poker's role in the later seasons of TNG. Third place isn't that bad, and you should be proud of your showing. You played great, and the commentators most certainly didn't overlook that fact. They could tell that you're a poker enthusiast, for sure. Always good to see you on my TV, Wil! Good luck at the Invitational, plenty of Poker Monkey Mojo coming your way! And lots of hugs to Sketch! How'd his re-check go? Kitty Mojo still coming his way! Posted by: Eric in PA at February 22, 2005 08:12 AM
I similarly make my sister completley crazy when she comes to see plays I've worked on. All throughout the performance I will regale her with tales of the pre-production or tech rehersal and more. During the last one, she kept having to hit me because I was anticipating the jokes and laughing BEFORE they happened, or I'd laugh at things that only other crew members would find funny. Posted by: Lianthe at February 22, 2005 12:37 PM
Hey Wil, caught your appearance on WPT the other day. I didn't think you shamed yourself too bad. My wife thought that you gave too much away by talking to the other players too much, especially Andrea. If I was going to rank the level of poker skill by what I saw, I'd probably put you only second to LeVar, who I thought played pretty well, but he also had the advantages of getting John in a trap which was pretty brutal (4 sevens?, who saw that coming?). From the edit it didn't really appear like you got really great cards. I didn't think much of Mekhi's play, and thought he mostly stumbled into big wins, and Andrea I thought played incredibly loose, once she was up, she never should have called that bet against Mekhi. Dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb. Oh, another thing to torment you: the titles in the show manage to mispell both your name and LeVar's. I share your pain: my name is misspelled in the credits of The Cosmic Voyage, one of the first big films I worked on. Posted by: Mark VandeWettering at February 22, 2005 06:16 PM
