vote early, vote often

Oh dear.

It appears that TV Guide is holding an online poll about Star Trek, and our dear, sweet young Ensign Crusher is currently leading in the "Most Annoying Character" category.

I know, it's hard to believe it, especially when we consider that Wesley was given lines such as, "We're from Starfleet! We don't lie!" and "I feel strange, but also good!" and the ever-popular "Course laid in, sir." But it's true. And so very, very sad.

Not that I care about this sort of thing . . . but actually, I do. I'm really tired of wearing that "Annoying Character" albatross around my neck, and if Wesley is voted most annoying in TV Guide's big old Farewell to Star Trek issue, I don't think I'll ever hear the end of it.

I'm not suggesting that thousands of WWdN readers go take the poll and stuff the ballot box. I mean, that would just be wrong, right?

Normally, I'd stuff this ballot box entirely on my own, but if some of you WWdN readers want to legitimately and honestly vote for another character, like The Computer Voice for instance — I mean, come on! How many times did the stupid Ship's Computer actually save the crew? Yeah! That's what I thought. She's got nothing on Wesley Crusher — I would be ever so grateful.

Provided, of course, that you truly believe there is a different, more annoying character than Wesley — I'd never suggest taking actions which could call into question the legitimacy of an online Star Trek poll. Oh no, not me.

Never.

Perish the thought.

I'm serious! Start perishing (right after you vote, that is.)

Thank you.

You were not the most annoying character. My wife and enjoyed the episodes you acted in.

Posted by: lance [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 10:22 AM

They didn't ask who the most annoying actor was (it's Shatner), they asked who the most annoying character was.

You aren't Wesley. (You do kind of look like him, though.)

Posted by: FNRThomas [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 10:30 AM

Might I recommend that people focus on one particular character? I voted for Lwaxana Troi as most annoying, with apologies to Majel.

Posted by: Clothos [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 10:31 AM

Most annoying character? Try _hottest_ character and maybe I'd go with it... :)

I was (and still am) an unashamed Wesley Crusher enthusiast. He was one of my adolescent "boy do i want him!" guys--some girls are smart enough to find the geeks hot. Both my ex's have been physicists, so at least I'm consistent.

Thanks for the site, Wil--you've got an awesome blend of everyday reality and delicate insight to your posts that is fantastic to read!

Posted by: Allison [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 10:37 AM

I am shocked and saddened that Ensign Crusher was not an option for "With which male character would you most like to spend a romantic evening in the Holodeck?". Clearly the survey is flawed.

Posted by: Gilly [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 10:38 AM

Troi, Doh! yeah def. most annoying. I put Worf's son. Yeah Wesley (sp?) had his moments, but I think cuz we all knew he had some bad ass skills (and were jealous :) ).

Seriously the dialogue they gave you was definitely poor overall. You should have shown up in Voyager (did you? not sure since didn't see all of it) would have been cool.

Posted by: Kevin [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 10:39 AM

Wellll..., young Wesley Crusher was really the most annoying character on ST:TNG. When I watched it in the common TV room in college, there was always an audible groan when Wesley entered the scene. It was a badly conceived character: too earnest, goody-two-shoes, too smart, smarter than the adults character without any endearing character flaws.

But hey, that's was just Wil Wheaton's character. I haven't really seen much of him since ST:TNG until slashdot.org mentioned his blog. And seeing that he is really acquiting himself very well as a geek, that's way cool.

There's always the good chance that his appearance on CSI will remove that Crusher typecast image and Wil gets his acting renaissance.

Posted by: rudy [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 10:39 AM

This is a typical "let's jump on the bandwagon" thing. I really cannot understand why Wesley is always bashed. There doesn't seem to be a plausible explanation. What about Riker? I mean that guy was kind of irritating...he didn't have the best lines.

So, not to go one too long, but I don't think it's all that fair. I will submit my online vote for the most annoying character and Wesley Crusher is definitely not it.

Posted by: ryustar [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 10:41 AM

done and done.
lwxana really was the most annoying character.
i groaned every time that she was in an episode. it really was ridiculous.

Posted by: Lewis [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 10:42 AM

Don't tell them to vote for the computer voice Wil...tell them to vote for Worf's son Alexander, he's in second place.

Posted by: Aethera21 [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 10:42 AM

I voted for Lwaxana Troy as most annoying. I can't believe she survived across multiple series of Star Trek.

And also, I can't believe Ezri Dax is so low on the hottest character list.

Posted by: maracle [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 10:42 AM

I was worried when I read your post that the number of choices for most annoying would be very limited. When I looked at the actual poll, I had to laugh! I didn't have to ponder my response at all on that one.

Posted by: Lisana [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 10:44 AM

Wesley was always my favorite character. Of course, the fact that I was a young, boy-crazy teenager may have had something to do with that bias ^_~ "The Game" was always my favorite TNG episode.

Posted by: malanai [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 10:44 AM

I would vote for Wesley as Most Poorly Written Character, but annoying? Hardly. That being said, I place my vote for most annoying character squarely, and gingerly, on the ever-expanding waistline of Will Riker. Isn't the food on that ship supposed to be über-nutritious? I mean, damn, that guy got huge.

Posted by: Ingrid [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 10:45 AM

vote for another character, like The Computer Voice for instance

Great, Wil, now Majel Barrett is going to be crying herself to sleep tonight.

Posted by: Alan Gerow [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 10:47 AM

I apologize for the doubble post and need to clarify, I'm voting for his actual waistline, not the character. Never should have been there.

Posted by: Ingrid [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 10:48 AM

Yes, yes, urge them to vote for Alexander, because he's in second and he has the added benefit of actually being the most annoying character.

Posted by: Anya_____ [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 10:48 AM

It may be my age (about yours) or my gender (NOT yours) but I never did find Wesley annoying. A couple characters on DS9, yes, and I couldn't even watch Voyager, so I can't comment there, but never Wesley.

But consider - the no. 2 spot for most annoying is... another kid (Worf's son, when I voted)!

Posted by: KGKnorr [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 10:48 AM

Oh holy shit, Wil, in what universe was Wesley Crusher more annoying than Deanna Troi?! Must be some inverse tachyon deflector shield interdimensional rift bullshit or something.

Grumble grumble.

Posted by: Jaime_Pomales [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 10:54 AM

Good lord, how on earth is Majel Barret not winning that question?? With all due respect to Gene, Majel is annoying in pretty much every aspect, from her character to the voice of the computer.

Posted by: Tim [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 10:56 AM

i would imagine that a significant part of the reason why people persist in their regard for Wesley as as annoying character has to do with this: the majority of TNG watchers would have been adults. and one thing that grates on adults' nerves is having a kid/teenager around who's smarter than they are. they hate it, and that pent-up anger got taken out on poor Wes.

i, on the other hand, thought he rocked. clearly those poll votors have never seen an episode of Voyager featuring Neelix. geez. Wesley never annoyed me - i totally crushed on him, and was thrilled every time an episode focused on him.

Posted by: freyja79 [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 11:06 AM

I never thought Wesley was annoying. Q always set my teeth on edge -- from Episode 1 of ST:TNG. He got my vote.

Am looking forward to CSI Friday!

Posted by: Pat G [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 11:06 AM

Well, the survey was clearly flawed. How could "He's dead, Jim" not have made the "most memorable lines" category? Or what about "Beam me up, Scotty"?

Anyways, I voted for Lwaxana Troi. It's now a horserace between Wesley, Lwaxana, and Alexander.

Posted by: Spudd [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 11:09 AM

As a reformed former subscriber to alt.wesley.crusher.die.die.die I think it's time to give WW a break.

Vote Neelix!

Posted by: ernac [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 11:12 AM

I always liked Wesley. He wasn't the best written character but I genuinely *liked* him. Troi, on the other hand, I wanted to bludgeon.

Posted by: strangestgirl [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 11:24 AM

I voted Neelix as most annoying. He was a chef for crying out loud. I would rather have a brainiac kid on my ship than someone who knows 18 ways to cook Nebulonian Sea Worms.

What I couldn't believe was just how far ahead Kirk is on the "what male you would like to have a romantic evening on the holodeck with". That should clearly read, who is the one most likely to have an Extraterestrial STD.

And poor Hoshi being almost last as the woman you would want to spend a romantic evening on the holodeck with. She is oh so my type. And she can even tell you how great you are in 89 different languages. :)

Posted by: Widget [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 11:25 AM

Another vote cast for Alexander - the most annoying character EVAR.

P.S. - I finally got to see your appreance on VH1 My Coolest Years. You were so adorable and very funny.

Posted by: Kelly [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 11:26 AM

Ha! At 11:22 a.m. Pacific time I voted and I see that Alexander is now at 16% and in first place and Wesley is at 14% tied for second! We did it! Hurray! Keep voting!

Posted by: TimCalif [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 11:26 AM

Well, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Most people who voted so far don't have much taste, it would seem (at least those who voted in the "which female character" category). Hoshi Sato is way down in the current results, which is a terrible travesty.

Posted by: Craig Steffen [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 11:28 AM

So why wasn't Wesley considered as one of the Crew members you would want at your side? I mean, he managed to get out of every situation! Wesley was the ST:TNG Version of MacGuyver! Give him a Plasma Inducer and a roll of Duct Tape and he will build you a Shuttle Craft capable of warp 9.9.

(Whoops, Sorry, my geek is showing)

-Wizzer

Posted by: Wizzer [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 11:33 AM

No offense to Marina Sirtis, but Deana Troi was by far one of the most annoying characters.

"I sense that... these creatures mean to do us harm."

"really Deana? Is that because of the axes they are wielding? Or because they said they were going to kill us? Thanks."

Posted by: Pink [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 11:34 AM

Yep, looks like the readership of alt.alexander.worfs.kid.die.die.die have pulled through for the Wheatonites! And once he wins, TV Guide will publish the results, and Wesley will finally join the non-annoying character lexicon once and for all!

I'm downloading PORN! GIGABYTES of PORN!"

/loves that story

Posted by: Eric in PA [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 11:34 AM

Dammit, they didn't have Kirk or Kai Winn as options for most annoying... had to settle for Alexander... *sighs* But in good news he's currently ahead of Wesley! We're pulling for you!

Posted by: ressick [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 11:36 AM

I wanted to vote for Dr. Pulaski, but she wasn't an option. The character was bitter, smug, snide and just downright unlikable.

Sure, Wesley and Alexander were annoying, but that's because (as friends of mine and I have noted frequently in conversation) the Star Trek writers have never had ANY clue how to write kids. Almost as bad as George Lucas.

And Wesley at least had a developed character. Alexander was like a cardboard cutout of a teddy bear, specifically dropped into storylines to make Worf uncomfortable.

Posted by: celtichris [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 11:41 AM

God, there were so many others I would have voted for before your name ever even crossed my mind. I loved seeing you on the show and was a faithful watcher. You weren't annoying at all (pretty hot though - I was a teen/preteen :D )

I voted because I thought Worf's son was the most annoying; tying with the computer voice.

Posted by: Mandy [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 11:45 AM

Done and done. I can't believe they had Bones up for Most Irritating. Someone ought to shove Ceti eels in these people's ears.

Joke - JOKE! Please, nobody reading this do that. 'specially you, Khan.

Posted by: James Casey [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 11:48 AM

As much as I adored Wesley, I always thought he was kind of annoying in the beginning. Maybe it was the ugly blue outfit...Though Deanna Troi's wardrobe made me want to cry.

Posted by: Suteshi [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 11:48 AM

oddly enough, wesley crusher in most annoying list and pavel chekov in holodeck romantic evening list both have a star from the star field background masquerading as an asterisk next to their names.

the cheesy backgound image gods are against you, wil...

that being said, i resisted the directive and voted for Alexander (and Jean-Luc in the holodeck fantasy question, fyi).

Posted by: mazurkr [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 11:50 AM

Oh, please. In a(n imaginary) world that also contains Neelix? Ickle Wesley positively shines by comparison.

Posted by: phoebesmum [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 11:50 AM

Hi Wil,

I have been lurking for a while, but this is the first time I have posted. Happy news: Wesley is no longer in the lead! Alexander has taken the pole. Ha! I must admit while I find some of Wesley's lines kinda tiresome now, when I was like 13 - I LOVED him. And I do still have a soft spot in my heart for him. Good luck in not finishing first!

Posted by: scarlett78 [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 11:53 AM

heh... I wonder how poor Majel feels being on the list twice.

see? you could have it worse. ;o)

Posted by: Katrina [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 11:58 AM

Well, first time poster here, been reading for a while. I never found the character Wesley Crusher annoying and since I had a crush on the actor, I liked it when he was on. :) I found Troi's mother the most annoying character of the series and have voted for her.

Now why wasn't Wesley listed for the male character you'd like to spend a romantic evening on the holodeck with??? That's the real conspiracy!

Posted by: crvboy [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 12:04 PM

Neelix got my vote, but Barbie of Borg was the most annoying character. How many episodes centered around her? I thought it was supposed to be an ensemble show. As of right now, Westley isn't leading, at least. It's Alexander at 16%, followed by Lwaxana at 15%, then Westley and Neelix are tied at 13%.

I'd also have to put in a caveat on the Borg as most fearsome villians. The original borg were, pre-First Contact. The thought of absolutely no individuality was far more frightening then the Queen thing.

Posted by: Mimiheart [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 12:06 PM

Hey Wil,
Lwaxana Troi was the most annoying. Alexander was too and they're in the lead...you have our support Wil.

Posted by: 1cutebird [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 12:07 PM

14:10 Central Time.

Luxwana Troi, Alexander, the computer voice, and Neelix are now ahead of our boy Westley.

Go ballot stuffers!

Posted by: Craig Steffen [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 12:13 PM

Lwaxana gets my vote. So sorry Majel.

But "Barbie of Borg" did in another category!

Any recounts will be handled by the Florida Secretary of State.

Posted by: DPJ2005 [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 12:13 PM

how could they call WESLEY CRUSHER annoying...he only annoyed the grizzled old purists who take their sci-fi and star trek much too seriously...WESLEY was the most "human" character on the show...seeing the enterprise through his eyes provided a view from a much different perspective...one which is never safisfied unless he knows why and why not...the rest of the crew were just doing their job...WESLEY was growing up on board the enterprise...exploring the new worlds around him...and the changes within him...too bad they didn't take better advantage of WESLEY'S point of view in STTNG...btw...LWAXANA TROI has pulled ahead of you...good luck...may you finish less annoying than most!

Posted by: d. burr [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 12:15 PM

Okay, I last checked and Alexander was winning. I was truly tired of any storyline that had Alexander in it. What did he ever do? Got into trouble - and it was usally boring when he did. Sorry the one time Wesley got into trouble (nannites anyone) at least he figured out what was happening and came clean.

So that was my vote and I'm glad he's now winning.

Posted by: macshaggy [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 12:29 PM

You are currently safely in fifth place, and Q is slowly taking over to push you to sixth.

No worries Wil.

Posted by: brigid23 [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 12:30 PM

The fools put William Riker under the list of hot guys - as if! Put him on the most annoying list and I'd vote for him in a heartbeat.

Posted by: sxKitten [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 12:36 PM

Anyone who gets baked while wearing some head-mounted alien game, then makes out with Ashley Judd, and subsequently saves the Enterprise from destruction... can NOT be all bad.

I voted for Alexander. ;-)

Posted by: AJ [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 12:38 PM

This is my first comment, but I'll try to keep it short and sweet!

1. I voted for Jake Sisko for Most Annoying.
2. I have a blog called "And now for something completely different!" so I found it amusing that you entitled one of your posts that ;)
3. Wesley was always my favorite, and I like to think that your character started my attraction to "nerdy but hot" boys that has persisted to this day!

Good luck with everything!!

Posted by: earlysound [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 12:40 PM

Oh man, Worf's son was definitely the most annoying of the bunch! I hope he "wins".

Posted by: ignote [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 12:40 PM

Have you noticed that Wesley Crusher (when you are voting) has a little star next to the name?
What's up with that?!?

Posted by: dave [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 12:41 PM

My dear, I'm afraid I did find Wesley insanely annoying on TNG. But happily, along came VGER and Neelix, who gets my enthusiastic vote. Voila!

Posted by: RavenDX [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 12:41 PM

Heh, I was going to vote for Wesley Crusher as most annoying, and then I saw the actual list and remembered how much I couldn't stand Troi. Ugh. Ship's Counselor? Wtf? No offense to the actor, of course, but having a genius kid on the bridge makes a hell of a lot more sense than having some half-telepathic shrink.

Oh, and Quark is more annoying than Crusher, too, but that's mostly because I feel like there's some kind of weird Arab stereotype mixed in with his character.

Most attractive actress? Definitely the first Dax from DS9. Hands down.

Damn. This makes me a dork doesn't it?

Posted by: StudioGlyphic [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 12:46 PM

Wesley isn't annoying; the half-assed dialogue that plagued the series is!

But I hope this helps; the top slot when I voted was a tie between the Computer Voice and Worf's little brat ^_^

Posted by: Devil Girl [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 12:47 PM

I had to vote for Neelix. Couldn't stand him. When I voted Crusher had dropped to around 5th place so you're obviously not THAT annoying! ;-)

Poor Majel - yes, Lwaxana was very annoying and so was the computer. So, since she played both characters do you add her % together? If so she's about 3 times as annoying as any other ST character!

Posted by: pyrofenix [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 12:50 PM

Oops. Wtf? I voted for the wrong Troi! Damn it, why isn't Deanna Troi on that list? Stupid TV Guide.

I voted for the Computer Voice, Wil, don't know why, but you are not in the lead anymore!

Posted by: Rockchild [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 12:58 PM

Hmm.... I can remember quite a few *Guest Characters* that were Annoying maybe a 1,000% more than Ensign Crusher could ever be... :)

Posted by: Keith Xgaming [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 12:59 PM

I voted for Lwaxana Troi... I hated that character. Right now she's behind Alexander Rozhenko and the computer voice... so you aren't even in the top 3 right now! :) I couldn't pick the computer voice though.... I mean, she was Gene Roddenberry's freakin' wife!

Posted by: joy [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 01:01 PM

Wil, I hope you sleep well tonight, and the bed bugs don't bite, because it hurts as I know!

Posted by: Rockchild [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 01:01 PM

Although I am reminded of an obscure anti button: "Wesley Crusher weighs exactly 71kg" It is a Blake's 7 reference, they are trying to outrun another ship, and are dumping everything they can to make their ship lighter, they are out of things to dump, the computer tells them they need to lose another 71kg to make it, and that a character the computer does not like weighs exactly 71kg.

Never much into Trek (or Blake's 7), but you write a good blog.

Posted by: RonaldP [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 01:12 PM

Neelix gets most annoying by far. What i can't understand is why no one wants to pet Ezri Dax's tribble. I mean, c'mon, that broad was foxy. Anyone remember the holosuite episode where she dressed as a cocktail waitress. *drool*

Posted by: Kane [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 01:23 PM

Uh, Joy. Lwaxana Troi is Majel Barrett-Roddenberry. So you still kinda voted against her. Oops.

Posted by: Kane [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 01:25 PM

Wow. Behold the power of WWdN!

Wesley Crusher is now in 5th place. Way behind the computer voice and Alexander (Worf's son). Now that was an annoying kid!

Posted by: CosmicDog [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 01:31 PM

Ya know... I was just thinking that! I was gonna come edit my comment. :) Ah well, I guess I don't like Majel enough... down with the wife!!

Posted by: joy [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 01:31 PM

Why didn't they have a category for "most annoying star trek poll website." I mean, it looked like ass in FireFox 1.01...

Posted by: Knight37 [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 01:37 PM

Ezri Dax was lush, whats going on?!?
Wesley was not the worst and looks like your safe on the voting front, DS9 was my favorite show - hail the Sisko! Besides look at it this way Wesley got the extremely fit girl in "the game" episode. Nothing wrong with that!

Posted by: KrazeyIvan [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 01:48 PM

Consider that ballot stuffed Master Wil!

Seriously though, as soon as I saw Lwaxana as a choice I couldn't fathom how anyone could not vote for her. Well, I guess voting for Worf's son is an acceptable alternative. But for our dear sweet Ensign Crusher?! Unthinkable! I mean, come on, nerdy boys are so in this season. Or... well maybe that's just me.

Also, the choices for a male character to spend an evening on the holodeck with were severely lacking.

Posted by: delenn_xi [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 01:51 PM

Well, Wil, a quick update for everyone just watching and reading this far down (you know who you are).

Who was the most annoying character?
Leonard McCoy 2%
Janice Rand 2%
Q 10%
Wesley Crusher 10%
Lwaxana Troi 14%
Alexander Rozhenko (Worf's son) 16%
Guinan 2%
The Computer Voice 16%
Quark 5%
Jake Sisko 2%
Neelix 12%
Kes 4%
Hoshi Sato 1%
Phlox 3%

Posted by: LinkDeath [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 01:55 PM

Voted. Okay, maybe more than once. I can't possibly concieve of what would have made Wesley "annoying". I can only contribute it to jealousy.

Posted by: HollyS [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 01:55 PM

I have done my part in keeping you in Anne's line of sight. ;)

Voted for Kes (her voice is like nails on chalkboard to me) and then for the Computer Voice (felt like I was throwing away a vote on Kes).

Posted by: Crissie [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 02:02 PM

I wanna know who keeps voting for WFS for the romantic evening. It seems to be a battle of the captains right now, so I'm gonna be voting for Picard.

Posted by: joy [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 02:07 PM

Hiya. I never found Wesley annoying, and Alexander was certainly far more so. Ugh. So he got my vote. ;)

Posted by: Jenna [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 02:11 PM

WOW how could anyone think Wesley was the most annoying Star Trek character?? *shakes head* Clearly there are too many crazies in this world, and they unfortunately all seem to own computers with internet access. No worries, we've got you on this. ^_~

Posted by: Kristan [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 02:15 PM

Dude, your character was not annoying at all. I was always annoyed by Q. You were always fun to watch.

Posted by: Kroeme [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 02:17 PM

that tell fucker that didn't talk in the episode with troi's almost wedding. He's the most annoying.

Posted by: st0ney [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 02:19 PM

Wil, I work for TV Guide in IT. There is no way I'll let Wesley be named most annoying.

Posted by: mattmrob99 [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 02:20 PM

Most annoying? No, there were many much more annoying characters. The dialogue was a bit lame but on Wesley was one of my favourite parts of TNG.

Posted by: radmama [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 02:20 PM

Definitely a flawed survey. The obvious answer to the second question, "Which character would you most want by your side on an away mission?" would be "anyone wearing a red shirt" and that wasn't even one of the choices.

Neelix definitely gets my vote for most annoying on that list.

Posted by: andy.f [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 02:20 PM

Congrats Wil, you've dropped to 5th place. Lwaxana Troi has to have been the most annoying!

Posted by: The Rob [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 02:21 PM

Man, I used to watch TNG with my brother when i was pretty young. For years i watched it, in fact... i was a fan more or less. Now, i don't really consider myself a trekkie or anything, but i know a certain amount through my brother. You and Jonathan Frakes were totally my favorites. [and i swear i wasn't a fan of you through Stand By Me first...It all started with Star Trek.]

That's just one girl's opinion.

Posted by: llikevol [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 02:45 PM

Wesley was so not the most annoying chaaracter. You/Wesley were absolutely plastered all over my walls (I still have one-just not on my wall). Anyways, I'm posting because I just voted for Alexander. I'm sure the actor was a nice kid and all (or maybe not, you never know), but I can't think of a more needless character. I was pleased to see that he was leading by 17% while you seem to annoy only 10% of the viewers who polled.

Posted by: Suziannie [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 02:54 PM

I'd vote for Rick Berman as most annoying star trek character :P

"Wesley may have had some terrible lines, but Neelix made me turn off my TV."

Yup. Without reading the comments, Neelix was my first choice. Then I'd probably choose Lwaxana, then Quark, then Alexander, then Kes... and there were a few characters not on that list that would be in my top ten. I don't think Wesley even made my top ten of annoying characters. I found him mildly annoying, but mostly because he was written so poorly.

Posted by: Laura Gjovaag [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 03:00 PM

Personally, I wish you much luck on not wining/losing this poll. Personally, I may be one of the few TNG watchers whose only real problem with WC was that he was under-utilized. I think unfortunately, that poll-wise it's going to come out that way. The hive mind of fandom is really no better than any other hive-mind out there. WC hating almost became a requirement in the TNG-community even for watchers of the show that never actually saw an episode that WC appeared in.

Fortunately, your work on the site, your writing, and overall efforts have helped many of the fans remember that WC != Wil. This of course works for and against the poll. Those that get it may still practice WC-hating because it's not personal, others may vote somewhere else to split the vote, but not overwhelm the masses who will just select "WC" because they are 'supposed to.'

A reoccurring minor character on a SF series is no way to really assess an actor's ability. Personally, I'll take all of WC and put it up against the kid who held a gun to Keifer Sutherland and delivered with perfect accuracy, "No Ace, Just You." Personally, I think the albatross isn't yours to wear at all. It belongs to the writers. The character was too often used as a plot device to solve problems. The exploration of the character was really not possible in the roddenberry-esque universe. Gene may have over shot himself in creating a character with great potential whose natural innate potential for conflict was something that naturally had to work against his universal view. Truthfully, the fact that the populace had such a follow good or ill for the character is testament to a highly competent actor being able to consistently put life behind the writing.

Sadly, I think this is always going to be something that causes a twinge. As an actor on any level you have your view of how you want a character you portray to be viewed. It's easy if you're playing a villain because you know what you've signed on for. When it turns out that a character grows into something unplanned and worse there's nothing one can do to steer it... one can walk away feeling a sense of 'what went wrong.' It's not my character, so it's easy to say... I don't think you should let it get to you. If it were one of mine... I'd probably feel the same way.

Granted, I'm just a guy with aspirations of Directing. You're the guy who's made it real. Keep the faith... The books are great and the love and passion for the art will bring you back to stage, film, and TV. There's no doubt behind the talent.

-Andrei

P.S. Saw the WPT. Had no idea how vicious LVBurton is at the table. Sorry the cards didn't go your way that night. We were rooting for you.

Posted by: Andrei Freeman [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 03:01 PM

I can think of a 101 characters that were more annoying than Wesley, so I don't know why people have got it in for the poor boy. Heck, I loved Q to bits and I had the urge to throttle him far more times than I did Mr. Crusher!
In the end though, Lwaxana Troi got my vote, it's like calling my own mother annoying without being whinged at :D

Posted by: Del [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 03:07 PM

Vote laid in, sir.

Posted by: Cory [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 03:16 PM

Everyone is complaining about the "most annoying character," but I'M up in arms that Wesley was snubbed in the "Male character you'd most like to spend a night in a holodeck with" category! I can't BELIEVE Kirk is winning in that arena. They didn't even HAVE holodecks!

Posted by: sarahalyse [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 03:20 PM

I'm with FNRThomas on the most annoying actor vote! Shatner couldn't act his way out of a box unless... it... involved... overly... dramatic... pauses.

Oooh yeah - been wanting a romantic holodeck evening with Tasha Yar long before I realized I prefer women over men. I'd take Wes for a study partner, though.

Posted by: Anna [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 03:24 PM

I hate to admit my adolescent crushes to the crushee, but put me on the list of "totally crushed out on Wesley Crusher." I even looked up your info to see how much older than me you were. (Well - are, I mean. You're still three years and 21 days older than I am, and always will be, I suspect.)

If I'd known at the tender age of 12 that I'd be telling you this online, I probably would have died of pre-teen embarrassment. God bless the internet.

Posted by: leenerella [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 03:36 PM

Why do all the Aliens on Star Trek always look like my uncle Cledus from Kentucky? I think that's annoying!

Well I gota get back to my post I'm working on and finish it fast, my hamster Duckie is waiting for me to turn off the lights.

Good night Wil, everybody!

Posted by: Rockchild [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 03:37 PM

There's no way Wesley was the most annoying character! At this risk of sounding cheesy, you were the sole reason I've ever watched ANY Star Treks. I HATE sci-fi anything (with the exception of the brilliant Fifth Element)... but I watched your episodes. For the Love of God, I even watched "The Liars Club". *tee hee*

Posted by: stephanie74 [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 03:51 PM

It's true, this poll is deeply flawed. No Spock or Data under "With which male character would you most like to spend a romantic evening in the Holodeck?" Very wrong. Yeah, I know, repressed/no emotion thing and all, but I always had crushes on those two fellas. Given the choices, Picard was a no-brainer. And way better than Kirk. (I've barely watched Enterprise, so I can't say I'd go for Archer, though I think Scott Bakula is many levels of yummy.

Wil, even before I discovered the fabulousness that you possess, I never thought Wesley was as annoying as others did. Frankly, I always felt a little sorry for him. Everyone telling him to shut up, fans bashing him constantly - the boy had it tough.

Yeah, I voted for Worf's son. Never liked Alexander all that much.

Posted by: Carol [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 03:53 PM

Hey Wil,

I think people find Wesley annoying because they would have given a few relatively important body parts to have *been Wesley themselves*. I know I had fantasies about that sort of thing as a teenager. Yes, when I wasn't dreaming about some hot girl I knew, I was dreaming about going on away missions, etc. Am I the only WWDN reader guilty of this sort of thing? I doubt it. (I also had Dr. Who fantasies, etc., but that's just me.) Anyway, I did for a while find Wesley annoying, too, and found myself chanting, "Die, Wesley, die," once in a while, but I think it wasn't because he was a bad character, or you did anything wrong playing Wesley, but all of us teenaged trekkies knew what *we* would do had *we been Wesley*, and it wasn't what he did on the show so that pissed us off. (With the exception of the Ashley Judd thing, which was really DEAD ON.) Anyway, don't take it personally, but Wesley was annoying because, dammit, WHY COULDN'T I HAVE _BEEN_ WESLEY?!

Posted by: prof_rocko [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 03:53 PM

Hey Wil!
Just did my civic duty and I noticed that as of 6pm central time Alexander, The Computer Voice and Mommma Troi are beating ya :) don't worry sent the link to some co-workers and family members. We're doing our part to help ya out. I didn't find Wesley annoying, he was the one character I could relate to on the show. It was nice seeing someone my own age in different situations and I too can now fully admit that Wesley was one of my first crushes.
Rockchild, I've seen Liar's Club too...I own it on VHS :) that is unless my niece decided to do something with the tape, she has a habit of hiding things, car keys, books, shoes..whatever :)

Posted by: NikkiH [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 04:20 PM

Funny. I didn't think you were annoying at all. As a matter of fact, I missed seeing you when you "disappeared". If I had my choice of annoying character (who happened not to be on the list), it was Deanna Troi. She couldn't make up her mind who she wanted; Waft or Riker. Hell, I wanted both too dammit!!!

Posted by: tiiana [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 04:37 PM

Dearest Wil - I didn't see Kirk's name on most annoying...I think Dr. Crusher was far more annoying then Wesley...Looks like William Shatner put out a call to have the ballot box stuffed too. Am I the only one who found Lavare's character totally annoying? You should be in 7th place...

Posted by: Mary Me [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 04:50 PM

Alexander's in the lead. Poor kid.

My basically irrelevant thoughts on the poll are here http://www.xanga.com/item.aspx?user=juverna&tab=weblogs&uid=217818972.

Posted by: Jen Z [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 04:57 PM

I was born in 1979, and I always wanted to be Wesley. It wasn't until college that I heard that people hated the lad. I still don't agree with them.

That's my one cent.

Here's my other. Of course it has to do with the holodeck question. I understand everybody's Daxing, I get your Sevening and your Nining. I wholeheartedly approve of the Hoshi fans. But oh my GOD, people, have you forgotten Ensign Ro? 400 times better than Unresolved Sexual Vulcan Tension anyday! I say we all go vote for her...

Posted by: DancingGollum [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 05:02 PM

Oooo! I love it when you push your Big Red Button, Wil! All your posse members love it! Vote? Sir, yes, sir! Anything for you, Mr. Wheaton!

Seriously, though. Neelix was way more annoying than any other character. He made me stop watching "Voyager" in the first place. Kes was a close second, the whiny little bitch. "I only live nine years, so I'm going to be as sedate and naive as possible!" Dude. Give me a break. If I only had nine years to live...well, that's not appropriate to share here. *efg*

I was highly disappointed that Wesley wasn't on the "male character holodeck" question. They were just afraid Kirk would lose if they put hot young Wesley Crusher on the list. Who wouldn't want to corrupt that minor?

Okay. Enough Drooling Fangoddessness. Sorry, Anne.

Justice has been served.

The Goddess of Justice and Vengeance

Hey all, I haven't read all 100+ comments so if this is a repeat please forgive - you do not have to fill out the entire poll to vote on most annoying - simply do the one category and submit to save time.

Also, there is a solicitation at the end for new ST series ideas - here is what I submitted:

'Star Trek: Traveler'

Traveler and former Ensign, Wesley Crusher, covertly observes and occasionally intervenes (as in a slight nudge, here and there) in the course of many cultures' histories.
Guest characters could include ALL previous (living actors) Star Trek characters at any point in their lives - prequel, etc.

Have fun, everyone!

Hey Wil,

I can't do trackbacks but I am doing my part to spread the word and alter the vote.

http://shittyblogsclub.blogcafe.com/2005/03/heres-shitty-thing-to-do.html

Besides, Wesley was alright, besides some of the boneheaded lines he had, he was a good kid. I appreciated the character more when Spike TV ran TNG and I watched those episodes with my son. Wesley was polite, honest, smart and when he got the chance brave. Qualities I think we could all strive towards.

Posted by: jcklsgk [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 05:23 PM

Shill for Wil Wheaton? F*** that!! Vote up Tasha Yar!!!

Posted by: AdamAnt [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 05:24 PM

Hey, Wil, dont' feel too bad. Wes /was/ annoying, but only because he was that kid in school who always got everything right. The kid we all liked, but resented as well because he was who we wanted to be but somehow couldn't. And we resented liking him but couldn't help it.

And yeah, the writers did him no favors either. Also, if he's still making such an impact, isn't that rather a compliment than the opposite? I mean, he could've just been forgettable. Instead, he's a cultural icon. Be proud.

Posted by: Marsha M [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 05:28 PM

I never found Wesley to be "annoying", per se. I didn't YEARN for Wesley-centric episodes, but I didn't cringe when I watched one. I always thought it was fairly obvious that you were doing the best you could with what you were given. I must confess, though...in a few eps, I DESPERATELY wanted to just reach through the screen and mess up your hair. (It wasn't bad, it was just verreh, verreh precise. I always thought it would be hilarious if someone were to ruffle it all up and RUN!)

My vote for most annoying ST: TNG character would probably be Riker, just because he seemed to be written like Kirk v2.0. I still refer to him as The Boy King.

Posted by: MtDewAddict [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 05:30 PM

Consider it stuffed....the ballot that is.
When checking out the options I had to chuckle....because there are some far more annoying characters on there than good old Wesley (I will admit that you Wil, were the reason I began watching TNG in the first place).

So consider Alex Roszhenko (spell?) the most annoying character. YAY!

Posted by: Lauren [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 05:38 PM

I voted for Phlox as most annoying, on the grounds that I really oughta vote for an Enterprise character there, and I ain't voting for Hoshi (the real hot babe on that show) as "most annoying." I note that young Mr. Crusher is currently tied with Q for fifth place in "most annoying," behind Alexander, The Computer Voice, Mrs. Troi, and Neelix. (Good job, everyone!)

Other votes: "Make it so" as catchphrase; Data for the Away Team (brains and brawn in one package, how can you go wrong?); Jadzia for a night on the holodeck (2nd choice would probably be Bev, but it's not something I strongly feel); Chakotay for swinging the other way (I gave what I thought would be Pamela's answer); Species 8472 for villain (yeah, the Borg are winning, but I wanted to pick the villain that make even the Borg pee their pants!).

Vote early and often, everyone!

Posted by: Erbo [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 06:19 PM

Hmm, if Lwaxana, and the Computer's voice are both at 15% wouldn't that give Majel Barret-Rodenberry the lead with 30% of the vote?

... oh .. CHARACTERS...
blast!

Posted by: DaiTengu [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 07:27 PM

By far the most annoying character was Q.

Posted by: Prodigal [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 07:55 PM

I take just one issue with this quiz...

How could they NOT have included Wesley Crusher in the options for the romantic holodeck evening???

Will, I think that your own recollections of yourself back then are clouded by all the crap said by all the jealous fellow-geeks who just coudln't take it that all us geekgirls were ever-so-desperately in love with you instead of them.

Is it possible that you somehow didn't know how cute you were (still are)??? May your wife forgive me, but sweetie, you wore that uniform better than any of them. Burgundy suits you. ;)

Posted by: naiah christine earhart [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 08:10 PM

Wesley? Annoying?

Hmm. I do have to say, he's pretty much in a three-way tie with Riker & (Deanna) Troi in my book. But at least Wesley had more than one good line ("Shields up!" - "Captain, I'm sensing something hostile...")

I'll have to think about that one.

Posted by: bluepanda [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 08:38 PM

I agree w/naiah.

I voted for Lwaxana. One of the very few characters who could get me to change the channel. Though Phlox and Kes get honorable mentions.

Posted by: lloannna [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 08:41 PM

Even if Wesley Crusher were the most annoying character, it was the fault of the early writing on TNG, not the actor.

But don't worry, Wil. Wes wasn't even close to being as annoying as Alexander Whathisface.

Posted by: aintnosin [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 08:50 PM

I'm another viewer who never found Wesley annoying. He was a little bit more earnest and real than many of the other characters. There was some good stuff around his relationship with Picard, and just when Wesley was made an honorary ensign or what have you and became _really_ interesting, he left the ship. Boooo! And looking back, Wheaton was probably one of the better actors on that show.

To be nerdly, I'd rank the actors (in the context of the show):

Stewart > Spiner > Wheaton > Dorn > Meaney.

Troi wasn't annoying as much as she was completely extraneous.

Troi's mother was _supposed_ to be annoying. That was the character.

Now the character of Worf's son was truly annoying, a pure brat, and there was too much focus on him later in the show. I cringed every time he appeared on screen.

Posted by: Rebort [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 7, 2005 11:31 PM

Wesley was not the most annoying character. I actually liked the kid. In the beginning he was a little on the safe side but in the end. I like him in the end. He was....normal. I liked that he got in trouble.

March 7, 08:00 Central time.

In the TV Guide Star Trek poll, the "annoying character" question:
Alexander Rozhenko (Worf's son) retains a healthy lead with 17%.
Luxwana Troi, The Computer Voice, and Neelix continue with strong showings in double digits.
News: Q (at 10%) has overtaken Wesley Crusher, who is at 9% and falling.

The WWDN market segment is making its voice known!

I *hated* Q...and whats up with Gates McFadden bein' at only 6%.
Damn, I remember thinkin' she was so damn hot! (Of course I love redheads...).
My chiropractor looks just like her, I love my appointments.
I once read a Penthouse forum some trekkie wrote about Dr. Beverly and .... oh...sorry...

Where's the poll we take that will convince everyone that Enterprise is actually a good show with good characters and, for the past two seasons, good stories -- and that it shouldn't be canceled at the end of this season?

The failure of Enterprise most likely means the death of Star Trek on screen. Can we get Wesley to come in and save the day one last time? ;-)

Posted by: BenR [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 8, 2005 07:13 AM

Don't worry Will, I don't think Wes was annoting character. I am loyal Star Trek fan from the Dominican Republic, and believe it or not, I do like Wesley.
I'll vote right now...

Posted by: Bracuta [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 8, 2005 07:32 AM

Wil,

I just finished reading Just a Geek last night (honest!), and I've been reading your blog since 11/5/03 (when Neil Gaiman mentioned it on his site). You are really coming into your own as a writer and I'm happy to see the changes you've been able to make in the last couple years regarding your attitude towards Trek and your life. I am genuinely happy for you and hope to see more writing AND acting in the future (the sooner the better).

That being said... I have to confess that I didn't care for Wesley. I never sent hate mail or anything, but I was part of that overall vibe that you obviously were receiving. Let me clarify that, though I watched the show religiously, I was not a big fan of anyone on the show that first season. It seemed like it took a year or two for the writers to really flesh out the characters and hit their stride, and after that the show really took off for me. But they never really developed Wesley like the rest of the cast. When he got to speak, his lines were sometimes lame and when he was unhappy he just seemed whiny. So, since I wasn't a teenage girl I didn't have much to love about him. Later, as you've pointed out, they diminished Wesley's presence as much as possible and he just seemed unnecessary. Then when they threw in the traveller stuff, it just seemed completely wrong to me. It was like someone said, "What can we add to Wesley to make him more popular?" The problem was not that Wesley didn't have enough specialized traits (brainchild is enough to work with), the problem was that didn't seem to know how to write a teenager with emotianal resonance. It wasn't until some of your final episodes that I thought they were finally figuring it out. I remember thinking this specifically the first time I watched the episode with Ashley Judd, in which I thought you/Wes were great (even though I thought the "game" itself looked lame - I never believed anyone would ever have gotten Picard to put that thing on).

So, to make a long story longer, I just thought you should know that I did find Wesley annoying, I don't blame you for that, and I'm sorry if I had anything to do with any bad mojo coming your way. On the other hand, I am looking forward to your next book (I'm actually curious to see what a less autobiographical story would be like from you), and I am looking forward to watching your CSI episode and hope it leads to more acting work for you.

Peace,

Ross

ps - I didn't vote for Wesley.

Wesley wasn't annoying. Not at all. Neelix was annoying. In fact... Neelix is the only one on that list who was annoying. *shrugs*

Posted by: savage [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 8, 2005 08:03 AM

I simply cannot believe that Wesley wasn't even a choice on the "male character you'd like to spend a romantic evening on the Holodeck with" category.

Posted by: littlenicola [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 8, 2005 08:18 AM

I agree with Littlenicola! Why wasn't Wesley in that question? We should have a write in option...

I blogged this, and put a linky to the poll.... Happy to say that alot of people find Alexander more annoying, like I did! Sure, Troi's mom was obnoxious, but she was also funny. Alexander was just.... ick.

And the Borg are definitely the scariest!

Good luck, Wil! I didn't vote more than once, nope. Not me.... *whistles away*

This is a Decision 2005 news update!

In the all-important "Most Annoying Star Trek Character" race, we see that the lead is still held by Alexander Rozhenko. Lwaxana Troi has passed The Computer Voice to move into second place. Q and Wesley Crusher are still tied for fifth place, but each of their percentages has dropped to 9% from the earlier 10%. We're still not going to call this race yet, but things are looking good for the young ensign.

This has been a Decision 2005 news update. Stay tuned next hour for an "in depth" (wink wink, nudge nudge) analysis on the candidates for "Female Character With Whom You'd Most Like To Spend An Evening In The Holodeck." (cue cheesy music, fade to commercial)

You were one of my favorite characters! I voted so I could help you out of the pit :) I told my Dad (a fan also) to go vote too. Hope it helps a little bit anyway! I was sad you weren't on the male list of who you'd like to spend an evening with (platonic of course to respect your wife lol) Take care!

Well, hon, Wesley isn't even in the top 3 now. I passed the link around to a bunch of friends, who were all in agreement that it was a rip that Deanna Troi wasn't a choice for "most annoying". Or was it that there should have been a "most useless" category. Something like that, anyway.

Posted by: Beth [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 8, 2005 01:05 PM

nearly every character on Voyager was more irritating than Wesley. Troi the first year of TNG was awful (hand to forehead "I feel...I feeeeel.... Anguish." Yeah? You must be watching the rushes of your own scenes.)

Wesley shoulda been on the "hot" list, just so American middle school teachers had someone to vote for (ouch, did I really type that?)

And I'm a straight woman, but I'd sleep with Jadzia Dax. mama!

I've never understood the animosity toward Ensign Crusher. My only issue with that character was that it wasn't developed thoroughly. They had some great ideas, but I think they needed to devote more time to his character development in order to have his story make more sense and touch more people. I'm not certain that you could have done anything more with what they gave you, but I could certainly see that you tried to make the lines work (regardless of how simplistic they sometimes managed to be). I think they needed to give him a bit more grit to make him interesting...he was too nice and vanilla.

I went over and voted for Alexander Rozhenko, who was truly annoying. That character could have been a work of genius, but the way it was acted (along with the rather crummy storylines he was given) made him a real groaner.

Let the albatross go. There's no way you were more annoying than Neelix.

Posted by: fnaqzna [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 8, 2005 05:28 PM

Did anyone else have trouble viewing the survey using Mozilla? I was really bummed to have to open IE just to get TVGuide's page to load.

And, more importantly, why wasn't Wesley one of the choices for "male character you'd most like to spend a romantic evening with on the holodeck?"

Posted by: KLoebrich [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 8, 2005 07:19 PM

To be honest, I never really took much notice of Wesley. He was just . . . there. (Found wwdn when I was surfing the net, trying to figure out if I really did see Wesley in Nemesis, and if so what was he doing in a Starfleet uniform? But that's another story. Since then, I keep coming back to read your blog.)

I found Lwaxana the most annoying, but then that character was meant to be annoying.

A little side note: In a new series of STTNG novels, set in the lead up to Nemesis, Wesley gets the girl! Yeah! It's the "A time to. . ." series.

What boggles me is that so few are/were annoyed by that self-rightous old bat, Dr. Pulaski. I'd rather watch old anti-drug after school specials from the Regan years than sit through a syndicated episode of hers.

Posted by: greentrench [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 9, 2005 01:58 AM

Just stuffed it. For Alexander. Though in retrospect, I have to say I hope Brian Bonsall doesn't take it personal-- there was not a lot the kid could do to make the character likeable, he was written to be the whiniest EVAR. And I bet wearing the "turtle" was putting him in a bad mood, too.

So Wil, do you ever talk w/Brian about "growing up Trek"?

Another thing: you s*&k, TV Guide! Where's my hot male choices??? Where's my Data? Where's my Spock? For that matter, I'd do the brain-pulsing aliens from _The Cage_ before I'd do Kirk.

Posted by: cosmiquemuffin [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 9, 2005 02:54 AM

I've never understood why people saw Wesley Crusher as annoying. I always wanted to be Wesley Crusher.

I think jealousy is at the root of this problem. Jealousy of both the character and the perceived lifestyle of a young, famous actor that everyone assumed must be having a whale of a time.

Posted by: theaardvark [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 9, 2005 03:11 AM

I know I am coming late to the party, but I have to say it:

Wesley Crusher _was_ the most annoying character on ST:TNG, my friends and I hated him with a passion. We wanted him to be court martialled and put into a brigg.

That however has nothing to do with Wil Wheaton, the Geek, to whom I would give my last DVD-R - even if I knew a new OS X seed was coming that very day.

I did not vote. Not only because I understand that Wil wants to shake that bad karma, but because the site does not render correctly on my browser. And surely, some others have a claim to most annoying, and the actors are not geeks.

And there is hope: I no longer even usually think of StarTrek when I read about Wil Wheaton, I am sure others feel the same.

Alex

Wesley was annoying... but there were even more annoying choices on the list. Neelix, for example. Voted... and aren't you on CSI tomorrow night?

Posted by: JaeWalker [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 9, 2005 12:19 PM

You know what's annoying? Seven of Nine winning the "romantic evening" poll. How predictable.

Posted by: Gushie [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 9, 2005 12:56 PM

Well rats, I wanted to choose "Jean-Luc Picard" but he wasn't an option... so I went with Neelix instead.

I was one fo those 12-13 year-old-girls back in the early ST:TNG days and had the biggest crush on Wesley Crusher, despite that ridiculous ensign costume they made you wear the first season! Wesley was definitely NOT the most annoying character! (And you can feel better for the moment, at least, because right now Alexander Rozhenko is currently ahead.)

And Wil, I just have to say: I've been reading for a couple weeks now and am enjoying your site tremendously!

Posted by: Zee [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 9, 2005 01:16 PM

Hey Mr. Wil,

To be honest, I did find Wesley annoying. He never inspired me with hatred or vitriol or even alt.wesley.die.die.die leanings... but annoying? Sure. I never had a crush on him, I never wanted to be him. I just didn't find it believable that he'd be saving the ship all the time. Not your fault.

But really, the only reason I care one whit about Wesley now is because of you -- Wil Wheaton. And I think you're such a cool fellow -- a good writer, a real person, someone I might be friends with -- that I would hate to do anything to hurt your feelings. You'd do the same for me, right?

So I voted for Q. He seriously was a pain in the ass.

But how come Sisko isn't getting any love on the holodeck? Damn, that voice could ask me directions to the corner deli and I'd be at his mercy. And I'm a vegetarian. Yowza.

Anyway, Wil, you rock. And your dear, sweet Wesley is in 6th place, so never fear. Bring on crazy old Walter!

Posted by: Christina [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 9, 2005 08:09 PM

I'm sorry. I can no longer relate to Wesley or any Star Trek character as being annoying. I've seen Star Wars Episode 1.

Posted by: Wolf Harper [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 10, 2005 11:54 PM

I wanted more episodes with Wesley in them, so I obviously didn't think he was annoying.

But seriously, time to move on. Wesley was a character, you're an actor, you played Wesley, that show's over, Wesley's history, you're still acting.

Every time I see the show Numb3rs, I think of you in the lead role, with that intensity, sharpness and unfailing belief that you're right.

Posted by: pbarnes7 [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 11, 2005 05:01 AM

Wil,
Lwoxana Troi is the reason I have voices in my head telling me to kill, but you are the one that taught me I could kill just as good as any adult. Thanks for everything!

Just kidding, except for the part about how much I hate Lwoxana Troi.

Posted by: Aaron G. [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 11, 2005 11:07 AM

Wil --

I hate to rub this in your face and all, but... transcending his child-star role and becoming one of the most famous bloggers on the Net is exactly the sort of thing Wesley Crusher would have done in your shoes.

Posted by: Wolf Harper [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 11, 2005 12:52 PM

I couldn't help but notice that they neglected to list your character among the choices for a romantic evening in the holodeck. What's up with that?

Posted by: Sum Of 2 Squares [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 13, 2005 04:29 PM

WIL!
Tell me the truth: How many times have you heard the following joke?
"Ensign Crusher, report to Airlock Four."
Heard it:
A.) Never. Gosh, you're so smart: You're either a cyborg or Jewish.
B.) Uhhh---what was the question?
C.) OH HOLY ##&^! I hear that 10E4 times at every con I attend!
What is it?
