mail call!

I think it's time to open the WWdN mailbag . . .

Subject:Wil how a terrible news that ya are a lefty
Date: April 10, 2005 1159
From:Craig R.
To:Wil Wheaton
Message:Will sorry to hear that you are one of those lefty's from Holly Wood ... Though it should not surprise me much of what comes out of Holly Wood these days . You are just like the other sewer crap that comes out of Tensile town , I'm referring to the Pathetic schmucks such as Whopi Goldberg , Ya know her a as the faithful bar tender on the Enterprise . Martin Shean , Susan Surandan and Sean Pen . Ya all just have to face it Bush got over 51 to 52% of the vote just look at the map. So face the facts hippie and live with it BUSH WON BY A LAND SLIDE !!!! NOW I KNOW IT DON'T SET WELL WITH UR INTELLECT . HAVE A NICE LIFE AND LEARN TO SUFFER IN SCONCE ... OH BY THE WAY KERRY VOTED TO CUT THE INTEL.. BUDGET BY 80% READ THE SENATE VOTING RECORDS. GUESS YOU WILL BE OFF MY MOVIE LIST WHEN YA COME OUT IN THEATERS AT LEAST PATRICK STEWART KNOWS WHEN TO KEEP SILENT. YA CAN LEARN ALLOT FROM HIM ON CLASSY BEHAVIOR. YOUR JUVENAL AND CHILDISHNESS IS STILL SHOWING SO WHY DON'T YA GROW UP.

FORMER NEXT GENERATION FAN.
CRAIG R.

Dear Craig,

I learned allot from your classy e-mail. I was unaware that 51 to 52% of anything was a landslide, but we sewer crap probably use a different kind of math than you do. I apologize if that don't set well with ur intellect.

Next time I see Martin Shean, Susan Surandan or Sean Pen I'll be sure to share your insights with them. Maybe we can all trade our juvenal and childishness for suffering in sconce.

Best Wishes from Tensile town,

Will Wheaton

(I'm not sure if this is real, or not. If it's not, it's the funniest satire in history. If it is . . . it explains so much.)

Oh my. That was truly frightening. I was reading through it, and I wasn't sure whether or not I believed it was real. I mean, I guess it just didn't sit well with me at first that somebody would be that careless, especially when sending political messages. Whenever I post something on any website, I ALWAYS go over everything I type, especially when I'm coming out against somebody else. It's a matter of pride for me. I suppose either this guy has no pride in his work, or he just doesn't care.

Speaking as a math major, just the fact that he said "over 51 to 52%" made me cringe, but then when I read that he called it a landslide, I felt actual physical pain. I'll never understand people like him who can just yell at people, not make sense, and make the rest of their party look stupid. Liberal as I may be, I hold my opponents in the highest respect (aside from people like him, of course), and it really hurts that somebody does that to them. Politics should not be about mud-slinging or whatever it was that this guy was doing.

I'm actually disappointed in Wil's reply!

That letter deserves SO much more of a sarcastic ass-whooping than Wil gave him.

Wil, my advice? Remove your reply and then ponder it for a day or two and come up with something brilliant!

That was TOO funny to let off that easily

Posted by: buntz [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 01:17 PM

I think it is important to remember that, in opposing Bush's divine right to rule, we are anti-American terrorist sympathizers who {insert meaningless right-wing insult here} , but only when we're not ensuring the perpetual liberal bias in all media.

Personally, I find things like the new National Defense Strategy referring to the judicial process as a "Strategy of the weak", and equating it with terrorism, as a threat to America... great... Might makes right, eh?

Posted by: xend [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 01:25 PM

I laughed soda through my noise whilst reading this. And it really stings. Add that to the list of your crimes, Wil. My nostrils have been assaulted by your "lefty from Holly Wood" humor!

Posted by: GekWataru [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 01:25 PM

Man, that was freaking funny. It almost makes me feel bad about these nutty folks.

Is learning to spell so difficult? Is communicating properly so bloody hard? [shakes head]

It is too bad he didn't bring up all the mysterious voting machine problems, and other election related issues. But, they are too busy cheering for the troops shooting up cars in Iraq.

Posted by: AmiNTT [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 01:32 PM

Yikes! It seems we have met the enemy, and he is illiterate.

Posted by: fpp [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 01:34 PM

*applauds approvingly* well said, wil.

Posted by: irinabughova [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 01:36 PM

Cripes! It looks like Mommy and Daddy forgot to lock the desktop away from Junior again.

I weep for the future.

Posted by: lomara [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 01:37 PM

Good Lord, the Nigerian phishers know better English than that crapsack. Ironically, little Craiggy-poo is probably one of those folks who shrieks that foreigners should "learn English or go home."

I guess proper spelling and grammar are hallmarks of the "liberal intellectual elite," and therefore verboten to Monsieur R.

Posted by: Matthew Cox [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 01:44 PM

You know, I've always wondered: "Who WOULD Jesus Insult". Now I know. Wil, you must be damned! DAMNED I TELL YOU! One of the Faithfool have Fingered you!! THE CHIMPOSITY!!!

The entire Bush Family, in my opinion, are going to hell.

Posted by: doog [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 01:47 PM

I couldn't read past the landslide comment. How does anyone in their right mind consider barely over half a landslide??

Posted by: Angie [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 01:52 PM

Ok, I am not from the left or right. (Social security needs to be fixed and privatization is a possible answer, Ashcroft may not have been a Nazi but he scared me and Bush seems to be happy wiping his butt with the constitution) I am out here in the middle and trust me there are lots of these people out here but at the same time there are quite a few nut bag lefties too. 51% isn’t a landslide but you can’t tell some people that. Look how the FFC is acting and something like 90% of the complaints are coming from one organized group. I think most people are in the middle and the reason that no one listens to us is because we don’t say anything. Write your congressman when they screw up or something you don’t agree with is up for a vote. Don’t back down and tell them you may not vote for the “other” party but you might not vote in their race at all. This will get their attention real quick.

Posted by: kellyc [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 01:53 PM

WOW, typical right winged remark.

Posted by: Treken [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 01:54 PM

No Child Left Behind??

I think if Bush was really the champion of his "consituents" he'd have long implemented (and promptly underfunded no doubt XD) something like say...

"No Redneck Left Behind"

Posted by: aarbizu [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 02:01 PM

It wasn't until half way through the email that I realized the guy was talking politics. For a while I thought he was lamenting the fact that you were left-*handed*.

Posted by: Jake [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 02:04 PM

Ok, that note was just sad. Maybe that particular person was just having a bad day. Maybe he is on a binge of some sort. Drugs, Alcohol? Sane people don't write notes like that.

Just for the record. You and I don't agree politically but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy dropping by to hear what you have to say. I enjoy reading your thoughts on life, politics or whatever.

Posted by: Madie [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 02:07 PM

Wow. The US leftys don't have to do any work. The spin doctors for the Democrats may as well resign now. Who needs to undermine the Bush administration when its supporters are willing to do it for them?

Oh, and there's a special circle of hell for people who think TYPING IN CAPS makes their point louder. In cyberspace there is no volume button.

Posted by: Cybersyd [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 02:08 PM

wow, a land slide..... 3%* is a land slide!
only in the right wing world! o and let me guess craig learned to spell from a cracker-jack box eevn i can seepl bteter tahn him, and i'm screwing up on purpose! (you can still read it right?,i knew you could!) and yes holywood, i can imagine would be tensile (am i using this right?), or is it malleable ?

I guess he didn't see the part in Carrie when she kept remembering the line her mother gave her: "They're all gonna laugh at you you you you! (echo effects are mine ^_^)" We are all laughing at him.

Posted by: tiiana [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 02:17 PM

I'm a new reader. I started reading Just a Geek a couple of days ago, and it's been the cause of much fatigue (can't put it down at night and go to sleep!). I think you're doing a great job! The more I read, the more I like.

About your right-wing following: It's important to note that there are in fact, sensible, reasonable, conservatives out there. They're just hard to find. Obviously, this guy's a complete idiot! It amazes me that there are people so clueless, they don't even realize they are their own best argument.

Anyway...looking forward to reading more! And I don't think this is the worst on the net....mine wins, hands down. ;)

Posted by: jessiker [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 02:25 PM

That guy is such an idiot. Literally. He can't even spell. No wonder Bush won, look who was voting for him. You responded better than I would have. Good use of sarcasm.

Posted by: exoticagypsygurl [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 02:31 PM

LMFAO! That was just too funny. I haven't laughed that hard all weekend Wil. THANKS! Can we make this a monthly entry?

Posted by: pyrofenix [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 02:32 PM

quoting JOHN MELLENCAMP'S "WALK TALL"..."the simple minded and the uninformed...are easily led astray...and those who cannot connect the dots...look the ther way".

Posted by: d. burr [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 02:37 PM

that should read "other way"!

Posted by: d. burr [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 02:40 PM

Wow...that note alone explains a lot about why Bush won, not once, but twice.

I think this should be an annual part of the website. Bring on more idiotic hate mail!

Posted by: Nate [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 02:43 PM

Think this might be a joke email? I'd be torn between doing as you did, posting the email, or ignoring because whoever wrote it would like nothing better than to see their little piece on your website. Oh well, pretty funny either way (although I guess the fact that it might be a real email is alarming).

Posted by: KhromeGnome [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 02:56 PM

That's like ... WOW. Somewhere right between funny and scary as hell.

Posted by: Sib [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 02:57 PM

Thisis the clearest evidence of WHY the Rethuglicans love to gut public education, isn't it? The stupider and more poorly educated people are, the more supportive they are of the right-wing. Brains go UP, right-wing goes DOWN.

Posted by: JCortese [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 03:02 PM

Oh, come now, Wi[l|ll], it's not fair to twist the gentleman's words. He said Bush got *more* than 51 to 52% of the vote, which is obvious from looking at "the" map. Either our president is elected by geographical area majority and not population, or we've all been mistaken and our country really has an even distribution of people all over. New York and LA are just figments of our imagination! There's no way one tiny spot like that could outvote something the size of Montana!

Posted by: carson [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 03:09 PM

A little chlorine in the gene pool, perhaps? Just a thought.

Posted by: TheSingah [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 03:10 PM

It's a shame that IQ tests aren't required to vote--there's not much to be said for democracy when a raving idiot has as much say in running the country as someone who can comprehend the long-term effects of his/her actions.

Posted by: JSc [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 03:16 PM

I'm glad I wasn't the only one that thought he was calling you a Southpaw at first...and thinking, "Wow! So is Whoopi! But why is this guy so pissed about it? Is he from one of those cultures that thinks the left hand is dirty?"

I would be tempted to reply to such an email like this: Until you can type using the grammar and spelling most children learn in the third grade, your letter will not be processed in my brain. Thank you.

Posted by: Tawny Leona [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 03:17 PM

Jeez, Wil.

Sure, you out-smarted him, but, really, is that an accomplishment?

Sorry, but now I feel like I just watched Muhammed Ali beat the crap out of Emo Phillips. Kind of embarrassed for all concerned.

You're too high a calibre to be fired at so big and flimsy a target.

Posted by: Leviathan [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 03:18 PM

As a conservative myself, I can say that "Craig R." is the kind of guy that gives all conservatives a bad name. While I might not agree with Wil's political stance (and there are times I don't agree with George W. Bush's political stance, let alone Wil's), I don't let that get in the way of my opinion that Wil is generally a Good Guy.

What we do need, though, is for those on the Left to act more like a "Loyal Opposition" and engage in intelligent debate, not simply define themselves by saying "Whatever Bush likes, we're against it!" (Or worse, engage in groundless name-calling and slander.) I believe Wil has in fact done that, in the few posts here where he's actually mentioned politics at all.

Unfortunately, idiocy, it seems, knows no political boundaries. Wil, my apologies to you on behalf of all the reasonable conservatives for having to deal with that little twerp.

Posted by: Erbo [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 03:26 PM

The best thing about Bush Jr. being President for his second term is that at the end of his second term he can never run for President again. Thank God!

The best thing about Craig R.'s email to WWdN is that it exposes the illiteracy of the average G.W. Bush supporter.

Posted by: T.C. [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 03:31 PM

Um. I don't even know what any of that was supposed to mean! Perchance he was meaning to describe Hollywood as being very strong when subjected to linear pressure and yet still brittle and able to show emotion (tensile is a REAL word so I had to read into it a bit.)

Posted by: Scott Alan Miller [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 03:35 PM

Wow.....just wow. This guy sounds like most of the people in the town I live in. He once again shows the higer intellect of the "ditto head nation". He sure showed you man..I mean, with all the caps and the misspellings..he'sobviously WAY smarter than you or all the other celebrities he amed....you're totally p0wned. LoL
But where was the rambling about how his buddies died face down in the mud so you could have freedom part though? I think it needs some of that. You know the "how dare you speak in a way contrary to my belifes, I sacrificed for yur freedom to speak" contradiction.
I'm still a fan Wil, Picard has nothing on you ^_^

once again, that email proves that while we may not have won this election, we did indeed win the war on dumbasses.

i salute you, wil.

Posted by: pseudohipster [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 03:43 PM

I think that people who want to voice their political concerns would be better off doing so with facts. It doesn't make sense to attack someone with a letter that is full of spelling and grammar mistakes.

Posted by: nicole [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 03:44 PM

If Craig is real, pray to God that he and the like minded be saved from the Bush demons or damn them all to their landslide win to hell!!

Posted by: SR Phoenix [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 03:46 PM

Wow...I wonder if this Craig person knows that the President's approval rating dropped from 49% in January to 42% in March-April.

Posted by: Crissie [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 03:49 PM

Seems you spelled your name wrong there, Wil. Might wanna look into that.

Posted by: Termite [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 03:54 PM

Wow. That was so surreal it was almost performance art. Craig R. could probably make a nice living doing weddings and birthday parties.

Posted by: Lisa Jonte [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 03:56 PM

I saw this letter on another board. Someone posted this reply after it.

Dear Republican Party,

I want to show my unequivocal support for President Bush.

When he took office, I was struggling in my chosen profession, often attacked by policies of the Clinton administration.

That changed when President Bush took office.

Thanks to him, my company now has multiple avenues of expansion and a whole new market place has opened up for us. He has provided us the catalyst for unlimited recruitment.

Although some members of Congress have wanted to curtail my enterprise, Bush wisely chose not to listen to them.

The President's War on Terror is exactly what I have been hoping for.

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help with the re-election.

Yours Truly,

Osama bin Laden

I also have a funny post about Irelands Current view of America which can be found here

By the way, Craigy ole buddy ole pal.... 52% a landside huh....HAHAHAHAHA

Posted by: Noel Burke [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 04:02 PM

First time ever posting here. I thought that I would let you know that I think Craig has really been getting around lately. I received three comments in the past few weeks from someone with a very similar writing style (of course, they left out all of the "Holly Wood" crap-couldn't use it as a valid point in my case).
Anywho, Craig(Tom1257, BushisGod1967 and CheneyforPres in my case) all make the same point-that our public education system has failed us miserably. Also, they have proven that most of America do not know the difference between moderate, progressive and liberal-all are supposedly evil (myself, I identify with the more liberal portion of the market).
Good luck to you-they seem to enjoy passing sites of this nature along to all of their fundie/neocon friends.

Dear Craig,

It's called spellcheck. Look it up. While you're at it? Locate a dictionary and the right to free speech.

Flee!

We like your crazy views on politics, Will! I meant Wil, crap. Sorry. :D

We loves lefties. Yessssss, precious.

Posted by: Anya [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 04:12 PM

In the words of Tom Stoppard, "I'm sorry, but it actually hurts." I'm astonished the buffoon's god-awful spelling didn't make my eyes bleed.

As much as I would've loved to see you snark on that guy's quote-unquote letter, your measured reply (with just the right amount of sarcasm) was a good one.

Oh, and I for one blame the "activist judges" for his poor spelling ability. Glad to see that you continue to deny the whackjobs the pleasure of getting you riled up.

Yay Wil!

mine eyes! they burn.
mine sides! they burn.
::ooof::

that was hilarity in the highest form: a scathing diatribe that utterly fails. complete with all caps finger-wagging and atricous grammer.

you were much too kind to him. however, anything more you could have said would have been lost on him, i'm sure - as he wouldn't have gotten it nor would he have wanted to listen. all in all i think your response was best, considering the source. :/

How a terrible news! Thanks for sharing.

Posted by: Chuck [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 04:56 PM

Read the letter. Several times. Read the comments. My poor brain still cannot accept that that was a real letter and not a joke. Then I start to realize that it was real and I just want to cry. I beleve that when he wrote "tensile town" he meant "tinsel town". By itself; not such a big typo. In context; effin' scary.
If you're ever in Toronto, Ontario, it would be this expat's honour to treat you and yours to a nummy brunch.

Posted by: surabin [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 05:05 PM

I'm inclined to believe this is, as you say, "satire". Mostly because I refuse to believe anyone is that dumb. I am a conscientious conservative but I still have a sense of humor and I'm pretty levelheaded and fair-minded when it comes to politics. I certainly know better than to send a scathing, misspelled, badly-worded e-mail to someone who has a wildly popular and internationally-read blog. Yes, this must - HAS TO BE - satire. I choose to laugh. ^_^

Posted by: Code Pirate [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 05:10 PM

I find it fascinating that of the hundreds of emails you probubly receive, you chose to print the one that was sent to you by some half-wit idiot. Of course you could never post a sensible email like the one I wrote you on March 03, 2005 and never received an answer to. I will repost it here:

Dear Wil,

First of all, I loved you on Star Trek TNG.

I was referred to your blog by a friend who happened upon your musings from the night before the 2004 election. I must say I was very disappointed to learn that you swerve left. But putting all your elitism to the side, I would like to ask you a few serious questions: With Bush in for another 4 years is the world really that bad because of it? Democracy breaking out all over and a really good economy...

It has become a cliché that Hollywood people are all Democrats.

You said about Bush: "Shame on you for four years of incompetent, dishonest, arrogant leadership."

Did you prefer Bill Clinton's total LACK of leadership over arrogant leadership? And can you please tell me where the proof of Bush's dishonestly is. In return, I will show you the transcripts of Bill Clinton's lies about his relationship with Monica Lewinsky.

You said: "For four years, George W. Bush and Dick Cheney have lied to the American people about everything from the cost of Medicare "reform" to their ever-changing justifications for invading Iraq."

Yes, the Prescription Drug Benefit will not benefit Wil Weaton the famous television and movie actor and yes it may indeed cost more than was originally projected by the White House. But older Americans that don't have Wil Weaton to help them out will come to count on this benefit. War sucks but the justifications for the War In Iraq have always been the same. And just because we can not prove what the entire international community said Saddam Hussein had (WMD) does not mean he did not have them. You my friend have been drinking to much microbrew if you fall hook line and sinker for the idea that Somalia (where we were defending Arabs against people the Arabs were ethnic cleansing) was OK but liberating Iraq from a brutal dictator that slaughtered hundreds of thousands was not OK.

You said: Throughout this campaign, they have tried to terrorize us into giving them four more years to mislead the country and further enrage the world.

I am confused. I thought it was Osama bin Laden that was terrorizing Americans. Was it not he that came on our televisions just days before the election to weigh in? I think it is hilarious that you claim Bush is terrorizing us into giving him 4 more years. That is like saying Wil Weaton was the star of “Stand By Me”, too many people would disagree with that statement for it to even be worth saying.

You said: A Bush victory would mean much, much more than just the defeat of John Kerry. It would endanger the values that the vast majority of Americans -- the majority of Americans who voted for Al Gore or Ralph Nader in 2000 -- hold dear. It would be a victory for terror.

Wow! You are one lost dude! A victory for terror huh? Gosh it looks to me that terror is having a really hard time remaining relevant even in the Middle East. Have you been reading the news from other than the Daily Koz (which refuses to cover the good things going on in the ME and elsewhere because it makes the administration look bad) try reading www.powerlineblog.com or my blog, www.socalpundit.com. Endangering values? I don’t get it. Whose values are endangered by Bush’s winning the election? Certainly not mine. And you seem able to live your life and worship or not worship as you please. I guess you were exaggerating huh?

You said: So if George W. Bush wins, I will sit down, and I will cry. I will cry for my children, who will most certainly face a military draft….

Damn you fell hard for the military draft rhetoric that the Democratic operatives like Charlie Rangel were the architects of. Yes, New York Congressman Charlie Rangel and his buddies purposely planted proposed legislation on this and then blamed the president as if to say the President was preparing a draft for right after he won the election. Well… Where is the draft Wil?

Anyway, your comments after the results were known were very limited. You seem to be moving on in your life and I am wondering if this election really mattered to you in the first place.

I hope you and your family remain well and I hope you will branch out in your seeking of knowledge.

PS: I put you on my blogroll.

Regards,

Kevin

Wow! There is nothing like a trip to a twisted fantasyland. I guess the saying is true, "Never Underestimate The Power of Stupid People In Large Groups".

  • It's okay to be passionate
  • Being passionate and ignorant is sad
  • Being passionate and willfully ignorant is stupid
It is no wonder that 61 other countries have a better literacy rate than we do (ref). It also seems that this person is a bit confused since he is now a "Former Next Generation Fan". Apparently he is confusing the character with the actor. It doesn't make sense that he would praise Patrick Stewart and slam you and then choose not to watch TNG. I guess the person is proving that they are lacking class since "...PATRICK STEWART KNOWS WHEN TO KEEP SILENT. YA CAN LEARN ALLOT FROM HIM ON CLASSY BEHAVIOR." I guess the lesson was lost on Craig R.

"Craig" - If you are reading this, please understand... Regarding choosing our leaders, it's not a matter of being a "Lefty" or a "Righty". Nor is it a matter of being Liberal or Conservative. It's a matter of doing what is Right for all Americans. It is not right to cater to half the population while ignoring the other half. It's not healthy for any of us. I salute your passion, but sadly you are not seeing the whole picture. If you truly want to help, do your best to listen to all (not "both") sides and offer solutions and not complaints to help us all.

BTW...I admire Caryn Johnson among others. -Dusty

So you're saying that EVERY Democrat is intelligent and well read? I beg to differ, dear. I've met some pretty stupid Libs. I'm not interested in your politics, Wil.

Posted by: warcrygirl [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 05:38 PM

Kevin: I didn't reply to or reprint your e-mail because — although your passionate self-righteousness is oh-so-charming — your missive is factually inaccurate, willfully ignores the facts, and does little more than repeat Republican Talking Points (you know, sort of like the ones your heroes at Powerline claimed came from Democrats, but actually came from Republicans. Kudos to them for quickly setting the record straight and accepting responsibility for just making shit up, though. Oh, they didn't. Never mind.) CRAIG R.'s e-mail, on the other hand, is hilarious. See, you both say pretty much the same thing, but CRAIG R. is just so much more pure.

Tell you what: do some "research" and see if you can get your "facts" straight. I know that "facts" are really annoying for guys like you because they contradict what you'd like to believe about your savior and dear leader George W. Bush. But if you can give it another go, (and punch it up a little bit so there's at least one joke to balance out the Talking Points,) I'll spend fifteen seconds thinking about responding, before I realize that trying to have a conversation with someone who actually links to Powerline is a lot like trying to teach a pig to dance.

Warcrygirl: Please indicate where I suggested that EVERY Democrat is intelligent and well-read. And if you could also throw in some jokes, that would be great. Thanks.

It has to be either a joke or an email written by George W. himself.

I'm not sure what saddens me most about that letter. Was it the typos/spelling or the lack of logic? It is difficult to decide.

The letter was amusing to read. I particularly loved the capitol letters. That is something that definitely grabs my attention and makes me want to hit the delete key…I mean reply key.

It might be because I’m like a girl and math is hard (so says Barbie) but 51-52% of about 65% of eligible voters is not a land slide. If the email said that it was sad that in the most heated election in ages only 65% of eligible voters voted, that would have been a valid point. Although I heard that there were places in Ohio and Florida where over 100% of registered voters voted! The Republicans really got out the vote!!!

If that was real, I am sad for the state of American culture.

As for this letter, well, I just feel sorry for the guy. I don't feel the need to mock him.

Like many others, the post gave me one hell of a good laugh.

This poor soul is let another example of a post Tom Smith posted on his political blogsite regarding the "creative design" debate in Pennsylvania.

And Craig R's letter has me intrigued about one thing...what IS the Tensile strength of Holly Wood?

Posted by: spcknght [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 06:34 PM

No, but seriously you guys: I had to, regrettably, drop out of school after getting my Master's degree. Therefore, as you will so easily surmise, I'm not really up on the level of education that I could be, so could someone please tell me what "suffer in sconce" means?

It's really going to bug me until I figure that one out. I'm going to seriously lose sleep over it. I'm begging you!

I feel sad that I am uneducated and ignorant.

I mean "iggerant."

See, now, that's just how sad I am.

It's tragic, really.

Wil, what day was that letter sent to you? Was it April 1st?

Posted by: DustyTymes [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 06:57 PM

This confirms my feeling that just as students are required to take an exit exam to graduate from high school, at the same time they should be required to take a second exam. If you fail this second test, YOU CANNOT BREED!!!!

Thanks for sharing your mailbag. Is there more? Please?

Hey Wil,

I wish I was as grown up as Craig!! I have never been that good at spelling. He must have been a brain in school. You know Wil, some people are just one big ASS. I think Craig must be up there at # 1. I'm with everyone on here, if that was a fake e-mail, then that was funny, if that was for real, then go to hell Craig!! As everyone has said your website is the best!! It makes my day to read your great posts. Keep up the good work!! The best to You, Anne, and your family!

Posted by: JCade [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 07:24 PM

This is the reason I have no political affiliation.

Some conservatives forgive you for your political leanings and would hope you will forgive for ours. I don't come here to read about your politics. I come here because you write well, and I enjoy reading it.

I don't begrudge your soapboxing here because this is your corner of the web. You are free to do with it what you like. If I think you are wrong on a subject I will tell you, but I will go after your argument, not you, your profession or the place you choose to call home. If you don't want to hear what I have to say, you can't deletely me, or block me or whatever, and I don't have problem with it. This is your playground, not a public forum

I do hope you don't take that letter to be indicative of all conservatives. It would be faulty, and as bad as assuming that all liberals agree and support the radical feminists who think that the only solution is to kill most men and keep a few around for breeding stock.

Conservatives are people, too, as hard as that may be for some liberals to believe. We have our bad apples and pig headed radicals, but then so do you. (Ward Churchill, anyone?) The world would be pretty dull if we all agreed on everything.

I bet you have more conservative readers than you think, Wil. We don't hate you, and we don't see your politics as reason to, so we don't write hate mail. Heck, I didn't much like you in ST:NG (until they gave the real uniform, and even then I wasn't a fan boy). I found WWdN through a friend who is also a conservative.

Hilarious! The firs thought that I had when I started reading it was, "Wait, why would this guy care if Wil's left-handed?" (Same thought that Jake expressed above.)

I really hope that the email was a joke. Or that "Craig R." was really drunk or something. Heh.

Posted by: dawn [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 08:18 PM

I might be truly dense, and I'm admitting it now. I read through half of that e-mail thinking that he was ripping on Wil for being left-handed. It was only when he started talking about W. that I finally clued in.

I was thinking to myself.. "I didn't know Wil was left handed." As I read further, I found myself trying to figure out what Holly Wood had to do with whether people are left or right handed. It was only after the Bush "election" stuff did I figure out what the message was about...

Sheesh.

Posted by: JeffD [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 08:23 PM

Give the guy a break. Maybe he was drunk when he wrote that...or he'd just watched "The O'Reilly Factor" which, as everyone knows, has the equivalent effect on one's mind as throwing back ten shots of 151.

Though, Wil, I must admit I'm shocked to read that you're apparently planning on coming out in a theater. I wonder how Mr. R knew this?

The scary thing is that I used to get book proposals not much more literate than that e-mail. I guess it's true: if you're truly incompetent at something, you're incapable of recognizing your true incompetence at it.

Posted by: Andrew [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 08:55 PM

I'm actually a little dissapointed that you chose this email to post. I like you and your work a lot, Wil, but I can't help feeling that this is a teensy bit of a potshot at conservatives. As other posts have mentioned, this is your blog and you can write whatever you feel, so power to the right to freedom of speech. I would like to expect that those who claim they are much more intelligent than others would realize the fallacy that lies in broad generalizations and stereotypes instead of insulting them. Understanding is neccesary for all. Whether the email was satire or not, I am not sure, but I do not consider it representative of conservatives.

I guess all that I am trying to say is I feel somewhat saddened from your choice to dedicate time to this email/post because it has appears to me that bickering and shots between the right and the left does not do much good for anyone.

I do not hold any respect for the content of that email, but for that matter I don't feel that I hold mcuh respect for your response. However, that is an aspect of this country that I do find amazing; we can all have our own views, and express them too.

I think the real Wil posted this particular letter is because it is funny. It's funny because the letter itself is its own punchline. I laughed until I cried, both at the letter itself and Wil's reply.

And...guess what? I'm a Republican from Oklahoma.

Posted by: Trav_Laney [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 09:29 PM

Wil, I would really be interested in knowing what your "facts" are. You see that is how it works Wil, one person asks a question(s) and the other person answers. If correction of the question is needed then it should be made in the answer(s) given. That is the problem I have with people who think the way you do. You put off this signal that you are too good to answer questions about why you think the way you do. It is almost like you think we are so stupid that none of our questions deserve answers.

Thank you for acknowledging that Powerline, Malkin, I and all the other credible Republicans ran with the truth as soon as the truth was revealed. That is something you just don’t see among the Dems these days (i.e. how long did Clinton deny the affair?). I am wondering if anyone in the Democratic Party or at ABC and WAPO knew who wrote the memo. I think they did not know and simply assigned it to Republicans. So as it turns out, a STAFFER was responsible for the memo and is now fired. Those of us of us in the activist arena in no way sought to gain political points with this issue. The Democratic Party and MSM minions did however make much of the rigged push polls they did on the subject. That is political. It strikes me that The Left is always aghast at Republicans behaving badly but when it is one of their own they are like, what wrongdoing?

I still want answers to my questions Wil. I will do the same if you submit questions to me. And if I feel the questions are unjustly worded, I will make the necessary corrections in my answers.

Posted by: techunter [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 09:29 PM

Ugh. Insert the word "reason" between 'real' and 'Wil' in my previous post. Like I said, I'm from Oklahoma. :-/ Keyboards are still sorta new here...

Posted by: slackferno [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2005 09:34 PM

I personally think that many of you are missing the point. I don't think it is about being Pro or Anti anything with the exception of speaking without good reasoning. The fact that the person was not a "lefty" is besides the point. Every party has it's share of volatile ignoramus' along with the well informed.

Let's not jump to conclusions that Wil's posting of this message is so much as a political statement inasmuch pointing out as the current level of reasoning and understanding of the less educated. Continually berating Craig R or anyone else serves little purpose, but I hope the "chiding" will spur this and other people to seek out the facts before they set forth their messages in fury.

Regardless of what party that anyone belongs to, if anyone automatically chooses to believe things at face value, they will find that they will be constantly disappointed. They often find out that they have been played because they hadn't taken the time to do their own homework. -Dusty

Too funny! I too know the surrealness of getting an e-mail that I can't tell if it is satire or not.

I blame the internet for permanently skewing my irony detector.

Satire or not it was a funny read. Of course either way it's only a matter of time before the Republicans denounce your e-mail as a Democrat conspiracy hoax. It was probably sent to you by Hillary Clinton.

Personally, I think it was written by a democrat supporter out to impress us with erudite irony.

Reminds me of the time England's Guardian Newspaper undermined the democrats by organizing a letter-sending spree, where English people sent letters to individual American addresses telling them not to vote Bush. Guardian published the responses. Anyone received the letters?

OMG Wil, great response! It was just enough and it made me laugh so freaking hard. I needed that. Thanks for sharing with us!

(As for the email being real... I CAN believe that people can be that stupid. Cheers!)

Posted by: Khali [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 11, 2005 12:10 AM

True story!

Way back in 1988, one of the math teachers (Mr. Guffey) at my high school (a fellow southpaw) wrote a satirical letter to the editor of the Lexington Herald-Leader (Lexington, Kentucky) about how left-handed people were evil and had to be killed for the good of all mankind. What my old math teacher was trying to do was make people take a second look at bigotry.

A good intention, but Mr. Guffey and the editors of the Herald-Leader underestimated the intellect of the average reader.

After Mr. Guffey's modest proposal went out, responses flooded into the Herald-Leader's letters to the editor in-box. Left handed people were simply outraged that someone would exhibit that level of hatred. And those letters kept coming a MONTH after the original satire went out!

Finally, the Herald-Leader had to devote a whole editorial page showing the original letter, all the hate-filled responses and an explanation by the editors that it was SATIRE and please please stop sending responses to it!

At the time, my grandpa (also a southpaw) thought that the original letter to the editor was hysterically funny and couldn't believe how easily people were believeing it

I'll stop by the offices of the Herald-Leader this week to see if they still have that editorial archived (I'm sure they would) and I'll try to make some PDF scans to post.

You know what they say hun you can't cure stupid. I too am a left-handed (politicaly speaking) liberal minded, free thinking Demorcrat (not that it only applies to the Democrats though) and it seems to me that I am in very good company. even if it is a joke, there's tons of idiots like that out there who truly think that way, in every country about every subject. "stupid" people exist and they all have an opinion that they are free to share..

still i personally think that its rather lame to post his mail on the website... including the reply, for us to make major fun of it. We dont even debate it (then again, whats there to debate) but we just..pull him down bigtime. I reckon its rather harsh, but hey, thats me.
And on top of that, i dont think it'll matter much. Either one prankster is laughing his ass off at our "serious" replies or one simple Craig is blushing coz of all the attention.

and i dont think its funny either :/

Loved your reply Wil (and since this is my first post here I should point out that I love the site as well), however I do think you could have been a bit more sarcastic. A letter that stupid and ignorant deserves everything it gets, and more.

Wil, perhaps I read more into it than you intended. You wrote "If it is . . . it explains so much." Just what exactly was this supposed to 'explain'? What I read was that this email was supposedly sent by a Conservative (and presumably a Republican since they seem to run hand in hand) and since the author of this email is clearly the World's Stupidest Person then ALL Conservative Republicans must be stupid.

Now that I've had 12 hours to basically not think about it (plus some tasty caffiene) I am reading it differently. However, our politics don't even come close to meshing so I'm still not interested in reading about yours. I do love your writing, though, and practically devoured Dancing Barefoot (I was the one who bought a copy for my Aunt who then had to share it with everyone else in the office because she was laughing hysterically while reading Spongebob Vegaspants) and I look forward to all of your other posts.

Hey Craig,

I voted for Bush (twice), I dislike the leftist agenda and basic out of touch lifestyle that both coasts have, I disagree nearly 100% of Wil's political beliefs, I dislike Sarandon, Goldberg, and anyone else who pushes a political agenda when they are supposed to be entertaining - however, Craig, pal, check the dosage. You are either taking way too much or not enough of whatever you have been prescribed.

Remember a tea spoon is the small one.

I disagree completely with the liberal position on everything, but you know what, that's fine because they disagree with me! If I knew Wil or ran into him, we could argue, discuss, point out the flaws in each others political positions, I could explain why I support the war and he could explain why he does not. He'll campaign and try to sell his candidates and I mine - and then we could agree to disagree and have a beer and discuss what's really important, his family, my family, gripe about work and then order another round.

Remember, check the dosage, don't mix the liquid med's with the pills and never save time by taking a weeks worth of med's on Monday morning.

Posted by: buildersent [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 11, 2005 05:12 AM

I believe Craig is a member of what I refer to as "general public". You see, I like "people" but I find the "general public" quite often contains more uneducated people than educated people. Therefore, I avoid too much "general public" time for fear I will become annoyed and angry. I also feel its very important to only discuss topics you are fully informed on. Therefore, I prefer to NOT discuss politics and religion, as I realize I could ALWAYS stand to learn more. Plus, my opinion is my opinion, and sometimes it's better kept quiet. Craig, take a lesson. Only speak on subjects you understand well, and for God's sake, use spell check, otherwise, no matter how much you may know about a topic, you look like a dumbass.

Posted by: swl-mom2Bryn [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 11, 2005 05:42 AM

I know this isn't supposed to be a message board (or a massage board either for the Craig inclined) but I felt I needed to comment on some comments:

JSc: It's a shame that IQ tests aren't required to vote

No it isn't. IQ-like tests have been used in the past to selectively exclude people from voting. It would be pretty easy to bias a test (or bias education) to only allow the children of those in power to vote. Any requirement to vote beyond citizenship is a serious threat to democracy.

Erbo: not simply define themselves by saying "Whatever Bush likes, we're against it

I agree with that, however I wish the Bush administration would not define Republicans as only those who agree with them. There is a lot of this sort of rhetoric going on surrounding DeLay right now. Luckily there are still some Republican Congressmen who are willing to break from the party line.

T.C.: it exposes the illiteracy of the average G.W. Bush supporter

No it doesn't. It exposes the illiteracy of one G.W. Bush supporter. And I'm not even sure that it really does that. It may just expose the sublime humor of someone whose political views cannot be inferred.

techunter: Democracy breaking out all over and a really good economy...

Breaking out all over? Where? Iraq is still up in the air as far as I can tell, but I really hope they make it. The economy is getting a little better, but this war is holding us back. The job situation is still pretty bad where I live. I personally know several people who have lost jobs in the past few months and haven't been able to find new ones.

mainja: so, does that mean we have to all suffer in a little glass thing hung on a wall? *grin*

I thought he was misspelling "scones" and that is was some sort of statement about returning to England if we don't like American independence.

Gary Hammontree: If you fail this second test, YOU CANNOT BREED!!!!

Whoa! First test a for voting; now votes for reproduction? I can't believe you are serious about this. This idea is way too open to abuse. Generally, people who make comments like this think they would never be in the excluded group. I suggest you go study German history.

buildersent: I dislike ... anyone else who pushes a political agenda when they are supposed to be entertaining

And who says when they are supposed to be entertaining? Certainly, if an actor went off script to promote a political agenda when they are getting paid to act it would be inappropriate. I mean that would just ruin a stage performance. It wouldn't be such a big deal on film since it could just be edited out, but it would waste precious time and money. But are you really suggesting that entertainer's right to free speech should somehow be curtailed when they aren't working? Are you really saying that you dislike actors who exercise their first amendment rights on their own time? Or are you saying that actors should be full-time clowns who exist only for your amusement?

Posted by: Alan [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 11, 2005 06:03 AM

I hate talking politics, I don't know much about it. I have not voted in the past two elections because I did not like the people running. I do not like Bush at all, but I did not like Kerry either. I am democratic, but the people to chose from are not very promising.

Am I wrong? Am I a dumbass?

Should I just vote democratic just because I am?
Does this make any sense???

Help me!

Posted by: peanut [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 11, 2005 06:18 AM

Alan,
While I’m sure we can all appreciate you going through everyone’s comments and pointing out ones that could have a lot of harmful effects if they came true I think that you have to agree that this one:
Gary Hammontree: If you fail this second test, YOU CANNOT BREED!!!!
Is not meant seriously.
Your comment:

Whoa! First test a for voting; now votes for reproduction? I can't believe you are serious about this. This idea is way too open to abuse. Generally, people who make comments like this think they would never be in the excluded group. I suggest you go study German history.

Is correct. It would be a scary world if people were not allowed to breed by the government. But c’mon, surely you’ve spotted someone or spoken with a person who you’ve later said to yourself “should not be allowed to reproduce.” We’ve all done it.

I think everyone needs to stop taking themselves so seriously. The elections are over. The U.S. has a president, whether they wanted him or not, and let’s just get back to our regular lives of hating each other for reasons better than politics. Anyone care to move on to religion next?

p.s. That was a JOKE. ;)

Where to begin? It's just too much funny to give up!

First of all. O.M.[Insert first letter of chosen deity here]!!!!111!one!1 I think we have a new cliche on our hands! From now on, I think we should declare that anyone who posts anything remotely like that email is, in fact, "Pulling A Craig" or "Craiging It," etc. I mean, really. It's the closest we can get to getting his pic in Webster's right next to the words "Idiot," "Pundit" and "Douchebag."

Second: Whoever Whopi Goldberg, Martin Shean, Susan Surandon and Sean Pen are, I'll bet they're overjoyed to get a mention on WWdN. It's probably the only world-wide exposure they'll ever see, and they owe it all to good ol' Craig. How else would anyone outside of Holly Wood hear of them? And on a personal note, Wil, if you do happen to see Whoopi, Mr. Sheen, Ms. Sarandon and Mr. Penn about Hollywood, please give them my best and thanks for years of entertainment.

Third, I'd say the sewer is a pretty crowded place, and you might want to consider a move to, say, Pasadena? I hear it's quite lovely this time of year. Oh, wait...

Fourth, It's called Fuzzy Math (pops). That's how 3% becomes a Landslide. Do you think he consulted Stevie Nicks (no offense to her, she's the absolute bomb) instead of Euclid, Pythagorus, or even Mr. Boito, my 8th Grade math teacher, as to the definition of a landslide?

Fifth. Heh. He probably downed one before writing that email. Now, I'm known in chat rooms to be something of a Grammar Nazi, but even I wouldn't want to touch that with a stolen 10 foot pole. Perhaps he can get one of those (stolen, even!) himself from Halliburton, eh?

Sixth, yes, you can learn a lot about classy behavior from Patrick Stewart, because from all given accounts, Mr. Stewart is a classy guy. But it's not class that has him keeping quiet on these issues. No, it's probably the fact that he's a British national with no real vested interest in American Politics, other than a good chuckle.

Lucky Seven time! Juvenile and Childish. Really? Since when is being a good husband, stepfather, gifted actor and super-gifted author classified as such? Maybe we should call that one "Fuzzy Characterization," nes pas?

Sometimes, the posts just write themselves, don't they. Good show, Wil!

That is the funniest thing I have ever read. I love it when people try to look smart without even bothering to spell properly.

It seems you've met your match Wil! LOL! Not! I think he needs to use spellcheck a little more! 1% oh no! What a LANDSLIDE!
This little M...F...needs to get a grip on reality and to get edjamacated! LOL!

I dont' know if this was directed at me:
"Not another one of those "Bush won, get over it" people.

http://www.hategun.com/features/getoverit/index.html"

But I'm not really a "bush won, get over it" type I'm more of a "SOMEone won and there's nothing we can do but wait four years and try to fix the things we can" type.

I didn't vote for Bush. I didn't vote for the "other guy" either. That's right. ::shocked gasp:: I didn't vote.

I was simply trying to convey that "Alan" should not take things so seriously. That's all. Since when is being happy a bad thing? Trying to deal with what we've got in front of us a bad thing? I think not.
Just my two credits.
Move along, move along.

Wow! The author must either be a back-woods hillbilly or else a 6 year old. Gotta love the "ananomininity" of the internet eh Craig? You should post his e-mail so we can explode his mailbox with a bunch of gibberish insults that would only serve to demean ourselves in the end... er, yeah.

I wish I got hate mail.

buildersent: I dislike ... anyone else who pushes a political agenda when they are supposed to be entertaining

swl-mom2Bryn: And who says when they are supposed to be entertaining? Certainly, if an actor went off script to promote a political agenda when they are getting paid to act it would be inappropriate. I mean that would just ruin a stage performance. It wouldn't be such a big deal on film since it could just be edited out, but it would waste precious time and money. But are you really suggesting that entertainer's right to free speech should somehow be curtailed when they aren't working? Are you really saying that you dislike actors who exercise their first amendment rights on their own time? Or are you saying that actors should be full-time clowns who exist only for your amusement?

They are entertainers and to parade them to congress (by all sides), give them TV time to discuss whatever malady is the flavor of the week, to use them as experts is an insult to people and moronic of anyone who listens to them. They are high priced (good for them!) actors who rarely know more on anything than anyone else.

I don't have a problem with anyone exercising their right to speak out, I have a problem with the saturation and elevated status of someone speaking out simply because they are an actor.

As I said, I voted for Bush twice and will probably vote for the next Republican as well. I don't believe I ever voted for a Democratic candidate for President and with their pro-social programs and anti-work agenda, never will.

Though, I have no problem with someone not agreeing with me and don't take it personal. Unlike some of the leftists here.

After 8 years of Slick Willy and Hillary, Bush is a breath of fresh air.

Dude, don't you think you might just be beating on the "special" kid? Come on, Wil, you know this moment calls for the sensitive "After School Special" treatment.

Next time little Craigy piggy calls, just give him a smartie and let him watch Bullwinkle. That usually makes his kind happy. Keeps 'em away from the computer, too.

Actually, Patrick Stewart has a home in Southern CA and was on record stating that if Bush won he was moving back to England. I love his work and do indeed think he is one classy (and handsome) fellow but I can't help wondering: does he need help packing?

(Sorry for the lack of reference but I've deleted the email where I got this info.)

Dur Whal,

I am one of them cum-patriots of the guy what writ ta ya, as wull as Kevin, the self-reigh .. er... self-ratcheous... er.... smart-ass guy what threw up Republican talking points at yer. I'm twoo stopud to vote (can't psell ether), so politics is too haredd for me.

Screw yer politics. i want yer bod. So, to all the righ t and lift-0wang assholes who hassel you, I say buzz off. Yer pissin' my wil off.

yore fan fer life.

****************************

The preceding was a fan letter from a mythical someone who could be about the same mental age as your first writer, but who admires your ass instead of your politics. I'm sure you get those letters, too, Wil. ;)

Seriously though, why do people write such incoherent maunderings? Do they think anybody gives a shit about their mispelled and regurgitated crap? It's sooo easy to echo Republican talking points, but it's so hard to think for one's self and do the right thing. Perhaps this is why you and "Whopi" and Susan and Tim and all the guys come in for so much crap from the illiterate and unwell-read.

I have NO (read zip, zero) tolerance for yahoos who can't think for themselves, I don't care how well-educated they are. I'd admire a person whose politics were different from my own if there was clear evidence they'd THOUGHT about what they were telling me. But that stops when it becomes clear they are just mouthpieces for the carrion-eaters of the extreme right or left.

You keep on keepin' on Wil. I admire your grit and skill and determination, and that counts for a lot.

People, come on...it was funny. I mean, slap-your-knee funny. It doesn't matter which side of the political fence you are standing on, you have to laugh and admit that the e-mail (even if it is fake) was friggin' hysterical!

Please don't turn Wil's blog into another NPR talk show clone...this country has enough blowhards telling everyone else what to think. Just laugh, shake your head, and move on!

All I can think of is some deranged redneck that has lived in the woods for years by himself, but somehow has internet access, sending you that e-mail. If people like this are contacting you, Wil, beef up your security and don't take any wooden nickles from ANYONE.

whoa, this is slowly turning into a fark-esq political thread. It was funny because the guy wrote an incoherent letter guys...geez. Can't we cross "party lines" and laugh at stupid people anymore?

Posted by: Tony Santos [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 11, 2005 09:35 AM

Frightening or funny? A little of both. The great thing about our country is the whole freedom of speech thing. I've been called everything from a liberal (still can't figure out what's bad about that...I don't think the "C" word, "Conservative," is bad...it's just not my pov) to a communist. My own sister recently called me intolerant and prejudiced against her family since they are friends with the Shrubs. It's just politics. Water off a duck's back, my friends. I have Republican friends who think W is an idiot and shouldn't be The Pres. Sadly, when we should be dealing with important national and international issues, our country (which I love) can still have our national attention still deflected by the someone uttering the phrase "Al-Quieda."

Frodo failed! Bush has the ring!

God bless America.

I honestly don't think I could deal with all sorts of of random people judging my life and choices the way you do. Do you just filter it out after a while? You do a good job of keeping a sense of humor, at least. : )

As someone who taught first-year composition for nine years at the University of Notre Dame (1995-2004), I can say that this was probably a real letter. I finally started collecting really good spell-checker typos -- you know, things like "the trails and tribulations of adolescence" and "a swarm of hungry misquotes" (mosquitoes) and "Asher was a pure-bread Jew." I can't tell you how many of my students believed that 51% = a major majority (their phrase) and that suffering in "sconce" is the best thing for all involved. It was depressing to hear them repeatedly brush details like spelling off -- because spelling and stuff doesn't matter, after all Bush said even C students can be president . . . . And besides, you know what I *mean.*
Yeesh.
You go, Wil.

Eric in PA: Since you are a fellow lover of grammar, I hope you will not be offended if I make a correction to your otherwise excellent post.

I believe you meant "n'est-ce pas" (rather than "nes pas").

I tried to keep this from sounding all passive-aggressive nit-picky pompous, but it's not working. I suck.

Cheers!

At first, I thought he had discovered you were left handed. Upon further reading, I started having flashbacks of too many discussions with my idiot brother who actually told me, "Jesus fishes out of the right side of the boat." ARGH.

Yes, my idiot brother likes to discuss only politics and religion at the same time (but never how me and my family are doing!). When I tried to defend myself against his Calvinist preaching, I mentioned, "God is love."

His response . . . "Oh, yeah. That's the 60s hippie version." ARGH.

So a fond farewell, as last week he moved to North Carolina. I hope he is at home in the woods, and that he has found a red state at last.

I just love it when they call us juvenile and childish, and they launch into nothing but pure hate filled diatribes. Doesn't he get that Patrick Stewart is a British citizen and no one would care what his opinion of American politics was? Maybe THAT's why he kept silent! Duh!

Hey Wil (and everyone else on the blog!),

Wow, this email either has to be a joke, or the person writing it is a joke.

What really has me a little pissed is that this email is being made to be representative of Republicans, making anyone who voted Bush look like asshats. There are a lot of complete jerks that call themselves Republicans and Democrats. I know many of both varieties, and I also see a few have posted here.

Why does everyone have to take such an extremist position? It is oh so nice to hide behind our anonymous pseudonyms on Internet boards like this one, isn't it? It is always the same old crap, the same old arguments. And all the while, you alienate those of us in the middle with your constant "I am right and you are wrong, no matter what" line.

I voted for Bush. I also read. I research. I don’t just take a liberal or conservative’s crap at face value. I voted for Bush because I believe that he is the lesser evil. I have disliked John Kerry for many, many years for my own reasons. Several of his political views disagree with several of mine. Having said that, I do not disrespect people who voted for him. I can see that there are a lot of valid reasons to vote for Kerry and against Bush. This is where I believe I differ from some of the other posters on this board. And perhaps even you, Wil.

Wil, sometimes when you write about politics you make it sound like people who do not agree with your exact views are idiots. This is where the right wing people get the idea of your elitism. I am not saying that is what you meant to communicate. But can you see where someone might have that perception of your comments?

I really enjoy your blogging, your acting, and your writing in general. I don’t agree with some of your politics, but actually do agree with you on many points. But that is not why I visit your blog. You welcome us into your life in a candid and honest way that I really respect. I enjoy learning where you will be performing, and what appearances you might be making. Your politics really don’t weigh on me that much, even though when you do get on your soap box I usually avoid your site for a week until you have it out of your system.

I want to wrap up this rambling post by saying that not everyone who voted Bush is ultra-right wing. Also, if this idiot that emailed you is real, please know that they don’t represent many of us that voted for Bush. And last, there are a number of Democrats that I would have voted for had they been the candidate for President. I think others feel the same way. Kerry, although a senior member of the Democratic Party, is a very liberal Senator from a very liberal state. Isn’t it funny that the Dems would probably have a person in the White House right now if they had picked a candidate just a little more towards the middle, a candidate with political views that might be just a little closer to many of us?

Joe
